- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.

- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33Do you have any traditions at your workplace
- 0:36that are just about fun and joy and
- 0:39celebration?
- 0:40I hope so.
- 0:42I love things like this that just sort
- 0:44of like build team spirit in an optional
- 0:46but life-giving way.
- 0:49So a few years ago when I was
- 0:51on staff at a church, we had a
- 0:53tradition in the summers on Friday afternoons of
- 0:55taking a half hour break to play Nine
- 0:58Square in the air because we had a
- 1:00Nine Square set from the church youth group.
- 1:03If you're not familiar, Nine Square is kind
- 1:04of like Foursquare except you set it up
- 1:06with PVC pipes and then instead of doing
- 1:08Foursquare bouncing on the ground, you're putting a
- 1:11ball up in the air.
- 1:12So it's the same concept, but reversed.
- 1:14Anyways, it was great.
- 1:15We'd go down to the giant church lobby,
- 1:17play Nine Square in the air for half
- 1:18an hour, then get back to work.
- 1:20That was so motivating for me.
- 1:21Now it was optional.
- 1:22It wasn't required.
- 1:23If that's not your thing, you didn't have
- 1:24to do it.
- 1:25But it was a chance to blow off
- 1:26steam, to laugh, to use your body.
- 1:29A lot of wins in Nine Square in
- 1:31the air for me.
- 1:32Now currently in my role at the food
- 1:33bank, my team has a tradition of a
- 1:36Friday morning dance party.
- 1:37So Friday morning, 8.45 a.m., we
- 1:40go sometimes to the boardroom if there's not
- 1:42a meeting in there, and we make it
- 1:44a dance hall.
- 1:45And we pretend that we know what we're
- 1:47doing with dancing, moving our bodies to Taylor
- 1:50Swift or whatever the song of the day
- 1:53might be.
- 1:54And it's just a goofy way to start
- 1:55Friday.
- 1:55And again, it's like, oh man, there's a
- 1:57little bit of joy in that.
- 1:59Sometimes we underestimate the importance of just enjoying
- 2:04our work.
- 2:05And I say that having been in the
- 2:08situation where sometimes you have a job that's
- 2:09really hard to enjoy.
- 2:10Sometimes you have a job that feels more
- 2:12like death than life, that feels like it's
- 2:14a form of suffering in itself.
- 2:16We'll circle back to that.
- 2:18But if there's opportunity in your work to
- 2:21just enjoy the work you're doing, that can
- 2:23be really good.
- 2:23And it can be really good, among other
- 2:24things, for your work, for the mission of
- 2:27your workplace.
- 2:28A company, Boston Consulting Group, they did this
- 2:31study a couple years back, released it in
- 2:332024.
- 2:34And one of their findings was joy at
- 2:37work cuts attrition risk in half.
- 2:40They write, we found that joy has an
- 2:42outsized impact on retention.
- 2:45Employees who enjoy their work are 49%
- 2:47less likely to say they would consider taking
- 2:50a new job than employees who don't enjoy
- 2:52their work.
- 2:53That's an intuitive finding, isn't it?
- 2:55If you're having a good time at work,
- 2:57you're less likely to go looking for something
- 2:58else.
- 2:59And so when we think about our own
- 3:02experience at work, if we are able to
- 3:04help ourselves have a better time at work,
- 3:07that's going to be good for our work
- 3:08and our workplaces.
- 3:10So in as much as we can do
- 3:11a good job while still having a good
- 3:12time, that's actually a good goal.
- 3:14It's good to have the goal of enjoying
- 3:16your work, of being joyful in your work.
- 3:19But in this series, as we've been talking
- 3:21about meaningful work, I kind of want to
- 3:23ask a question related to meaning, and that's
- 3:25how can you enjoy your work?
- 3:28How can you have a joyful day at
- 3:30work?
- 3:31Well, I think there's lots of different good
- 3:33answers to that question, but one that's kind
- 3:35of in line with what we've been talking
- 3:37about in the past few episodes is being
- 3:39really intentional about service.
- 3:42Service leads to joy.
- 3:44Okay, before we dig into the Bible passage,
- 3:47I just kind of want to give an
- 3:49image of the human body.
- 3:51Think about the needs of your body.
- 3:53You need water.
- 3:55You need food.
- 3:56You need sleep.
- 3:58Okay?
- 3:58There are other needs that are less obvious.
- 4:00You need human touch.
- 4:02You need air to breathe.
- 4:05You don't just need food, but you need
- 4:06a nutritional balance or else you start facing
- 4:08consequences long term, right?
- 4:10We have all these needs in our body.
- 4:13Those needs enforce limits on us.
- 4:16We can't function if we just don't sleep.
- 4:20We can't function if we just don't eat.
- 4:22We can't function if we just don't breathe.
- 4:24We have limits.
- 4:25We have needs.
- 4:26And only if those needs are met in
- 4:28the proper way are we able to function.
- 4:31And you can substitute, you know, some bad
- 4:35quality stuff, but only for so long and
- 4:38not without consequence, right?
- 4:39You can breathe smoky air, but that's going
- 4:41to affect your lungs.
- 4:42You can eat junk food, but that's going
- 4:43to affect your body.
- 4:44You can sleep fewer hours, but that's going
- 4:47to affect your brain, right?
- 4:48We kind of know, okay, if I can
- 4:51inhabit my body and get the sleep that
- 4:54I need, eat the food that my body
- 4:56needs, breathe the air that my body needs,
- 4:58that's going to be better for everything.
- 4:59My body will function better.
- 5:02Those limits, those needs actually indicate what's healthy.
- 5:06They actually indicate what good goals are for
- 5:08the care of your body.
- 5:10I want to suggest that the same thing
- 5:12is true of the soul, that the soul
- 5:14has specific needs and that one of those
- 5:17needs is the need to serve.
- 5:20That if you don't serve, you actually are
- 5:24missing out on like an essential nutrient for
- 5:27your soul.
- 5:28Service is good for the soul.
- 5:30You are not going to become the human
- 5:32being that you were meant to be, that
- 5:33you were born to be, if you don't
- 5:35serve.
- 5:36And part of that is because service is
- 5:38a pathway to joy.
- 5:40You're meant to experience joy as a human
- 5:42being.
- 5:42And there are certain kinds of joy that
- 5:44can only be realized by serving other people.
- 5:47Okay, so that kind of image in mind
- 5:48that we're thinking about how we're made as
- 5:51human creatures, what our limits are, and that
- 5:53we actually have a need to serve.
- 5:55I want to look at this passage from
- 5:57Philippians 2.
- 5:58So we spent a lot of times with
- 5:59Philippians 2, I want to go a little
- 6:01bit later in the passage, starting in verse
- 6:0314.
- 6:05So this is after Paul has summarized the
- 6:07example of Jesus as a servant, then he
- 6:09kind of expands on how do we apply
- 6:11that.
- 6:11And he says, do everything without grumbling or
- 6:14arguing, so that you may become blameless and
- 6:17pure, children of God without fault in a
- 6:20warped and crooked generation.
- 6:22Then you will shine among them like stars
- 6:25in the sky, as you hold firmly to
- 6:28the word of life.
- 6:29And then I will be able to boast
- 6:31on the day of Christ that I did
- 6:32not run or labor in vain.
- 6:34But even if I am being poured out
- 6:36like a drink offering on the sacrifice and
- 6:39service coming from your faith, I am glad
- 6:42and rejoice with all of you.
- 6:45So you too should be glad and rejoice
- 6:48with me.
- 6:50Okay, Paul packed a lot in there.
- 6:53The image that I want to focus on
- 6:55is right there at the end, where Paul
- 6:57says, but even if I am being poured
- 6:58out like a drink offering on the sacrifice
- 7:01and service coming from your faith.
- 7:05Well, what is he talking about?
- 7:06Well, he's using an image, in some ways
- 7:10alluding to the Old Testament sacrificial system, that
- 7:12sometimes you could have a drink offering, like
- 7:13you could have a cup filled with a
- 7:16drink and you would pour it out on
- 7:18the altar as a symbol of like, I'm
- 7:20not going to drink that, I'm giving that
- 7:21over to God.
- 7:23Paul says, that's what's happening to him.
- 7:26He is being poured out like a drink
- 7:28offering.
- 7:29Context here, he wrote this letter from prison.
- 7:32And so it seems that he's alluding to
- 7:34some of the sacrifices that he's made in
- 7:36the course of carrying out his apostolic ministry,
- 7:39that he's faced opposition, that he's faced suffering,
- 7:41that he's now imprisoned, that he may one
- 7:43day die.
- 7:44And indeed, as we know from a very
- 7:46early church tradition, that Paul was martyred, that
- 7:49he eventually did give his life for his
- 7:52faith, for Jesus, and for those who he
- 7:56had proclaimed the gospel to, that he was
- 7:58giving his life for them.
- 8:00And so I think Paul probably has an
- 8:02intuition that this may be where his life
- 8:04is headed.
- 8:05He's already suffered a lot.
- 8:06He knows that there are powerful people that
- 8:08oppose him.
- 8:10And so he says, but even if I
- 8:12am being poured out like a drink offering,
- 8:14right?
- 8:15So there's this present tense, right?
- 8:17Like I am being poured out.
- 8:18I'm already suffering.
- 8:19And even if that means the whole thing
- 8:21gets poured out, even if I die, what's
- 8:24his conclusion?
- 8:25He says, I am glad and rejoice with
- 8:29all of you.
- 8:30So you too should be glad and rejoice
- 8:33with me.
- 8:36What?
- 8:37What?
- 8:37We're supposed to be glad if you die,
- 8:39Paul?
- 8:39Like what?
- 8:40No, we're going to be sad if you
- 8:41die, Paul.
- 8:41Okay.
- 8:42Now, obviously there's room in Paul's teaching and
- 8:45in the New Testament in general for grief
- 8:48at loss.
- 8:49And yet mixed in with grief at loss
- 8:51is this kind of babbling brook of joy
- 8:54in light of eternity.
- 8:57Right?
- 8:57Paul is saying, even if I give up
- 8:59my life for you, there's still occasion for
- 9:01joy implicitly because of the hope of resurrection.
- 9:05Because this gospel that we've preached to you
- 9:06is true, that Jesus rose from the dead.
- 9:09And so someday I will rise from the
- 9:10dead.
- 9:11Someday you will rise from the dead.
- 9:12That means that we can rejoice even if
- 9:14we have to sacrifice it all.
- 9:16Even if we're poured out like a drink
- 9:18offering, there's ultimately joy.
- 9:23Okay.
- 9:23So I want to lean into this image.
- 9:26Okay.
- 9:27And then put it kind of alongside that
- 9:29earlier image of like the limits of the
- 9:30body.
- 9:31Right?
- 9:32We think about our body like we need
- 9:34to drink water, we need to breathe air,
- 9:36et cetera.
- 9:36Okay.
- 9:36Those are limits.
- 9:37We think about our soul.
- 9:39Our soul needs to serve.
- 9:41There's certain kinds of joy that we can
- 9:42only experience if we serve.
- 9:45And that's true even when the service is
- 9:49painful, even when the service is sacrificial, even
- 9:52when the service costs us our lives.
- 9:55Okay.
- 9:56So this is kind of the gospel paradox,
- 9:58right?
- 9:59On the one hand, I'm saying if you
- 10:01want joy, you really want joy, you got
- 10:04to serve other people.
- 10:05But this is not just some sort of
- 10:06like wishy-washy therapeutic, like, yeah, volunteer every
- 10:09once in a while and you'll feel better.
- 10:11Right?
- 10:11No, this is saying even to the point
- 10:14of sacrificing your life, there will be a
- 10:17deep joy because of the truth of the
- 10:20gospel.
- 10:21That's what Paul is modeling and encouraging in
- 10:24this passage.
- 10:25He's saying, look, this is how it's supposed
- 10:27to work.
- 10:28And what's the offering being poured out on?
- 10:30He says, even if I'm being poured out
- 10:32like a drink offering on the sacrifice and
- 10:34service coming from your faith.
- 10:37So faith, right?
- 10:39Implicitly faith in Jesus, faith in the good
- 10:41news that Paul proclaimed to the Philippians.
- 10:44This faith in Jesus leads to a life
- 10:47of sacrifice, a life of service.
- 10:50That's what Paul is championing and praying for
- 10:53and celebrating about the Philippians, that they're already
- 10:55living that life of sacrifice, that life of
- 10:58service.
- 10:58And Paul kind of in a meta way
- 11:00is saying, I am a sacrifice being poured
- 11:03out on your sacrifice, right?
- 11:04The life of sacrifice and service that you're
- 11:07living is something that I'm willing to give
- 11:09up my life to make possible because I'm
- 11:12the one who got to proclaim the good
- 11:13news to you.
- 11:13I'm the one who's writing this letter to
- 11:14you.
- 11:15If I'm martyred, so be it because there's
- 11:17joy.
- 11:18There's joy for me.
- 11:19There's joy for you.
- 11:20There's joy for all of us.
- 11:21You hear the dynamism in this passage.
- 11:23Paul really deeply believes that he is going
- 11:27to see Jesus, that he is going to
- 11:29experience the deepest joy that there is, that
- 11:32it is possible for any human being to
- 11:34experience, even if he continues to suffer in
- 11:37prison and ultimately die.
- 11:40Do we really believe that about our faith?
- 11:43Do we really believe that about our faith?
- 11:45We're challenged to believe that about our faith
- 11:48and we're encouraged by the testimony of Paul
- 11:51and the testimony of martyrs throughout the centuries
- 11:53up into the present day, Christians who have
- 11:56given their lives for the sake of Jesus.
- 11:59Their example for us is to be willing
- 12:03to pour out ourselves like that drink offering.
- 12:07So let's, let's bring this back to our
- 12:10everyday lives at work.
- 12:11How do we have a joyful day at
- 12:14work?
- 12:15Again, I don't want to just give kind
- 12:17of a wishy-washy therapeutic, like, oh, you
- 12:20know, see if you can help somebody else
- 12:21today and it'll make you happy, right?
- 12:23You know, Boston Consulting Group says that attrition
- 12:25is 50% cut in half among happy
- 12:28work members.
- 12:28That's true.
- 12:30But for us as disciples of Jesus, there's
- 12:32something deeper we're invited into, and that's sacrificial
- 12:36service, being willing to serve others even when
- 12:39it hurts, not in the context of like
- 12:42abuse, not in the context of being a
- 12:44doormat, right?
- 12:45But willingly, us ourselves embracing sacrifice, even when
- 12:49it hurts, because we have a bigger vision
- 12:52of the reward that's awaiting us.
- 12:54We're willing to give up more because we
- 12:57know we're going to be rewarded for it.
- 12:59We know that there's joy coming and we
- 13:01know that we'll experience that joy even as
- 13:03we go along.
- 13:04So I would invite you, consider in your
- 13:08workplace, is there any way to sacrifice, to
- 13:13serve that might hurt a little bit?
- 13:17It might cost a little bit.
- 13:20And again, it's going to depend on your
- 13:22situation, what that is, but maybe it hurts
- 13:25because it requires humility, or maybe it hurts
- 13:27because it requires courage, like we talked about
- 13:29in earlier episodes.
- 13:31Maybe it hurts because it's foregoing an economic
- 13:34opportunity or an opportunity to burnish your reputation.
- 13:38Maybe it hurts because it means rearranging your
- 13:41schedule to do something a little bit inconvenient
- 13:43or maybe a lot of it inconvenient, because
- 13:45it's the right thing to do.
- 13:46So we're used to figuring out, okay, what's
- 13:49the maximum benefit I can get out of
- 13:51my job for the minimum effort, right?
- 13:53How can I min-max my job experience?
- 13:55And there's wisdom there about efficiencies and things
- 13:57like that.
- 13:57But sometimes the right thing to do just
- 14:00kind of sucks and we just got to
- 14:02keep doing it.
- 14:03And sometimes it feels more like death than
- 14:05life.
- 14:06Sometimes it feels like being poured out like
- 14:09a drink offering.
- 14:12If we embrace it with faith, if we
- 14:16embrace it to love God and to love
- 14:19others, if we embrace it because it's the
- 14:21sacrifice that Jesus is inviting us into, we
- 14:24will know deep, deep joy as we say
- 14:27yes to it.
- 14:30Jesus, help us each to discern what you
- 14:33are asking of us.
- 14:35Show us how to make deep sacrifices, not
- 14:39in unhealthy ways, not in perverse ways, but
- 14:43in courageous and faithful and gentle and humble
- 14:46ways, trusting that you made us for joy
- 14:51and that it will be worth it.
- 14:54Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 14:56do our work with you.
- 14:58Amen.
- 15:02Thanks for listening.
