- 0:06or been on the pits for years, there's something for you.
- 0:10Lock in and let's get better. Welcome back to the BBQ Therapy
- 0:13Podcast. I'm your host Tavis Bryant, and
- 0:16today we're tackling something a lot of grill and skip cleaning
- 0:19the grill. Now I get it, cleaning isn't the
- 0:21fun part, but stick with me because keeping that grill in
- 0:25top shape isn't about just making it look pretty.
- 0:28It's about protecting your health, making your food taste
- 0:31better, staying safe, and getting more years out of your
- 0:34BBQ investment. Let's talk about food safety and
- 0:37health risks. Let's start with the most
- 0:40important thing, your health. Some folks think cranking the
- 0:44heat will kill everything on the grates.
- 0:46Sure, flames kill bacteria, but here's the real catch.
- 0:50Grills don't heat perfectly even.
- 0:53There are always cooler spots where bacteria like salmonella
- 0:57or E coli can hang out and survive in that whole dirt ass
- 1:01flavor myth. Yeah, not exactly.
- 1:04What's really adding flavor is burnt grease and old food bits,
- 1:08the kind that can spark flare ups, ruin your cook, and even
- 1:11start a fire. Here's the other danger.
- 1:14That black crusty buildup on your grates can release a
- 1:17harmful chemical called carcinogens.
- 1:20When it burn, those nasty compounds can stick to your
- 1:23fresh burger or your ribs and go straight to your plate.
- 1:28Definitely not the kind of season you want to serve up.
- 1:32Next up is flavor and cooking quality.
- 1:35Now let's talk about flavor. Now let's talk about flavor.
- 1:38You work hard picking the right meat, seasoning it just right,
- 1:42maybe even babysitting the smoker for hours.
- 1:45So why let yesterday's cook ruin today's masterpiece?
- 1:49When you when you got grease and charge stuck to your grill, it
- 1:54could throw off the flavor. Not in a good way.
- 1:56Plus, all that build up messes with how the heat moves.
- 2:00Some spots get way too hot and scorch your food, while others
- 2:04stay cooler and leave it undercooked.
- 2:07And that's how you end up with chicken that's burnt on the
- 2:09outside and still raw on the inside.
- 2:15A clean grill means a clean cook.
- 2:18Your food tastes like you're seasoning, not last week's
- 2:21leftovers. Another reason to clean
- 2:23regularly? Safety.
- 2:26That grease and fat that drips down while you're cooking.
- 2:30If it's left to pile up, it can ignite unexpectedly.
- 2:34That's how you get those scary flare ups or even full blown
- 2:38grill fire. And if your grill stays dirty
- 2:41between cooks, it can attract some unwelcome guests.
- 2:45Think mice, roaches, ants. Looking for a snack?
- 2:49Not exactly the kind of BBQ company you want to keep around.
- 2:53Let's talk about grill longevity and cost savings.
- 2:57Your grill's not cheap unless you bought a cheap 1, so treat
- 3:01it like an investment. When burnt food, ash and grease
- 3:04sit on your grates and inside the grill, they trap moisture
- 3:08and speed up your and speed up rust and corrosion.
- 3:12Over time, that can damage burners, warp parts, and leave
- 3:15you needing repairs or even worse, a whole new grill.
- 3:19A little cleaning now saves you a lot of money later.
- 3:23Plus, a WellCare for grill just works better.
- 3:26The heat's consistent, the parts last longer, and it's ready to
- 3:30go whenever you are. So you want to know how often to
- 3:35clean? A quick rule of thumb, after
- 3:38every cook, give your grates a quick brush while they're still
- 3:41warm, wipe down the surfaces and empty the drip tray.
- 3:45If you're grilling a lot, give it a deeper clean.
- 3:47Every month, take out the grates, scrub the burners, and
- 3:51clear out the inside. At the very least, do a full
- 3:54clean at the start and end of every grilling season.
- 3:58Think of it like brushing your teeth.
- 4:00You wouldn't want to wait a month between brushes, right?
- 4:03Same idea, tools and techniques. You don't need fancy gadgets to
- 4:09keep the grill clean, just the right tools and a little know
- 4:13how. Grab a sturdy brush and if you
- 4:16use a bristle one, make sure no bristles come loose and stick to
- 4:19your food. A scraper, some warm soapy
- 4:22water, and maybe a specialized grill cleaner can go a long way.
- 4:27If you like the natural route, cut an onion in half and rub it
- 4:30over the grates while they're hot.
- 4:32The moisture and acid help lift gunk.
- 4:35Lemons, vinegar and baking soda work great also.
- 4:38Here's a quick cleanup routine. Number one, heat the grill to
- 4:42loosen up the debris and scrape the grates.
- 4:45Let it cool. Remove the parts and soak them
- 4:48in warm soapy water or a vinegar mix.
- 4:51Then wipe the inside and clean the drip pan and then finally
- 4:56rinse, dry and reassemble. Then lightly oil your grates to
- 5:00prevent rust. And here's some practical tips.
- 5:03Clean while the grill's still warm.
- 5:05It's much easier to get the gunk off.
- 5:08Keep it covered when you're not using it to block rain, dust and
- 5:12critters. Store it somewhere dry if you
- 5:14can. Prevent rest.
- 5:16And most importantly, make it a habit.
- 5:19If you do a little after each cook, you'll never have to face
- 5:22a nightmare of a deep clean. So there you have it, why a
- 5:28clean grill is a secret weapon behind great BBQ.
- 5:31It's safer, tastier, and it keeps your grill running like a
- 5:35champ for years. And plus, it just feels good to
- 5:39cook on a clean setup. That's it for this episode of
- 5:42BBQ Therapy. Now go show your grill a little
- 5:45love your taste buds and your guests will thank you.
