- 0:07Very nice crowd on hand on this sun-kissed afternoon. A lot of youngsters in attendance. 8,000 plus out here last night, 8,973. And it wins with 26,687 nights before last, of course with Harmon Killebrew mug night, when a nice thermal mud was given away to every fan in attendance, signifying Harmon Killebrew's 500th home run. 3 00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:42,000 Which he hasn't reached yet. He has 298. And Harmon again is not in the lineup today.
- 0:42Steve Vaughan will lead off at second base, taking over for Rock Perot, who has a mild cold. Cedar Cobar is in right field. Cobar in right. Rick Reep will be the first baseman. Reep at first.
- 0:53Leo Cardenas, the shortstop. Cardenas at short. Jim Holt. Holt will be in center field. He will bat fifth.
- 1:01Grant Allier, again, inserted and left. George Midderwald will be the captain this afternoon.
- 1:07O'Fran George Thomas inserted over at third as Vaughan moves to second to take over for Peru.
- 1:13So Thomas is at third. And young right-hander Steve Luber, 21 years of age, he hits that double-deuce mark tomorrow from Missouri on the mound. Luber with a record of 0-1. This will be his third outing. And he hasn't earned run average of an even seventh.
- 1:27So Luber to face Sandy Alomar batting from the left-hand side. We're set to get underway. And for the play, here's Dick Hinder. Thank you, Dave. Good morning, everybody.
- 1:35Sandy Alomar, Mickey Rivers, and Tony Gonzalez to face young right-hander Steve Luber. A beautiful day, 76 degrees. the wind has shifted. It's out of the northwest at nine miles an hour.
- 1:44We had southerly winds the last two nights. It was much more humid. And of course, we had plenty of rain last evening.
- 1:51Luber winds the first pitch of the game. It's taken for a strike. A fastball on the inside corner. Larry McCoy calling the balls and strikes. Jim Odom at first. Marty Springstead at second. And Jim Honachick at third base.
- 2:04Alomar's average now up to 247. He has five hits in the series. Luber rocks into motion. One strike pitch is a change. Bounces in. One and one. George Midderwald behind the plate.
- 2:16the infield of Thomas at third. Cardenas at short. Braun at second. Reese the first baseman. Allier in left. Holden center. Sovar in right field.
- 2:25That starting lineup of manager Dol Rignes decimated by injuries and sickness. Luber's one-one delivery. Swung on, bounced out toward the mound. Luber comes up with it easily on the first for the F.
- 2:38And Alomar is retired on a tamper back to Luber. That brings up the little left-handed hitting center fielder, Mickey Rivers. Rivers' average, 241.
- 2:51Rivers used that to pinch runner last night and scored what proved to be the winning run. He had a couple of doubles in the first game of this series on Tuesday.
- 3:04Three of Mickey's, make that four of Mickey's seven hits, double. Ground ball sharply toward the hole. Cut off by Braun. He gets the out at first. Good play.
- 3:14Braun ranging far to his left side to handle that hard hit ground ball off the bat of Mickey Rivers.
- 3:21Here's left fielder Tony Gonzalez hitting 241. Luber has retired the first two angels that he has faced on ground ball.
- 3:31Tony T. with a 241 average. Two other day games scheduled in the major leagues. Oakland will be at Chicago. They're just starting. And later this afternoon, Houston at San Francisco.
- 3:47Luber winds the pitch. Change. Floats outside. Luber with a fastball curve and a straight change. Occasionally will throw the slider.
- 4:00Wind blowing out. the pitch. A strike. Fastball down the middle. One and one. John Stephenson is on deck.
- 4:12Angel trying to make it four in a row before going to Oakland and facing Vita Blue. the pitch.
- 4:18Fry called on the outside edge. One and two to Tony G. Fred Caney coaching at first base and Rocky Bridges at third.
- 4:29Luber's one two pitch. Curve, flung out and line foul into the box seats beyond the Minnesota dugout on the first base side.
- 4:38A vendor came up with a baseball. Just stuck it away with all the peanuts.
- 4:49One two pitch. Bounce straight to Luber on one. He goes to first and the inning's over. So Luber keeps the Angels in the infield in a one two three first inning.
- 4:59And after a half inning, the Angels nothing. Minnesota coming to bat.
- 5:03Dave, you know how to spot a happy family without even knowing them? Well, since that sounds like the opening line of a commercial, I'd better say look for a family in a Dotson.
- 5:11More specifically, a Dotson five door wagon. It's the economy wagon that offers all the things you'd buy a big wagon for. the head of the household is happy because he's got a car he can commute in during the week.
- 5:21Then for the weekend, he just folds down the rear seat and he's got plenty of room to haul in the lumber he needs for that remodeling job he's doing.
- 5:28And I know why his wife is happy. She's got a smart new way to get the kids from here to there. the shopping from store to home, herself to the beauty shop, and then on to the bridge game picking up some of the other girls on the way.
- 5:38You sound like the voice of experience. Well, it's easy to see that a Dotson five door wagon really makes good sense as a family car. It doesn't cost a lot to buy.
- 5:46It gives you gas mileage of up to 25 miles to the gallon. It's got plenty of room for the whole family. And like every other Dotson model, it's loaded with extras that don't cost extra.
- 5:57Sort of hard to beat. All I can add is see the small car expert, your nearby Southern California Dotson dealer. See if he can't make your whole family happy.
- 6:05Drive a Dotson. Send it back.
- 6:11Right hander Tom Murphy for the angels looking for his fifth win. Bested by Vida Blue in a great pitching battle at Anaheim Stadium on the 4th of July, two to one.
- 6:20Murphy will face Steve Braun, Cesar Tovar, and Rich Reese in the first inning for the twins. Defensively, John Stevenson is catcher.
- 6:28McMullin in third, O'Brien in short, Alomar in second, Spencer the first baseman. the outfields from left to right, Gonzalez, Rivers, and Tony Canigliaro.
- 6:37Jim Fragosi went to Mayo Clinic yesterday for an examination. Three doctors looked at his foot and confirmed the neuroma on the bottom of his right foot and recommended an operation.
- 6:51And word is that Fragosi will be operated upon during the All-Star break. the pitch to the left-handed hitting Braun is inside a fastball.
- 7:00A prognosis after the operation, possibly three weeks later, Fragosi could return to the lineup.
- 7:08Aligned by Murphy, the pitch, curved inside and low, 2-0.
- 7:12I know it's a great relief for the Angel shortstop that something is going to be done. It's something that has plagued him and emotionally, knowing that he's not 100%, it's been tough on a very capable Angel veteran.
- 7:26And if things go well with the operation, he could be back in the lineup early in August so he could finish the last two months of the year.
- 7:35Mel Stottlemeyer had the same problem in his one bad year with the Yankees and Mel said the operation just after the season was over and two weeks later he was hunting and fishing and he said he couldn't believe how good he felt and how the foot had improved.
- 7:51It's a fairly simple operation and Fragosi has made the decision to have it done based upon the recommendation of three doctors.
- 8:00Pitch to Braun, a strike, 2-1. Stevenson had gone out to talk with Murphy and apparently there was some problem in reading his signals.
- 8:11the pitch, line drive, base hit, center field, Braun, tenth one up the middle, Rivers plays it back in and the twins have the game's first baserunner, Braun batting 2-39.
- 8:24the right fielder, Cesar Tobar, hitting 2-93.
- 8:38Little right handed batter.
- 8:42Always tough. Murphy from the belt to pitch. Change is butted up the third baseline, foul. Murphy knocked it with his glove to make sure that it is cold foul.
- 8:52One strike on Tobar.
- 8:55the twins, a team with good left handed hitting, have found themselves five games under 500 against right handed pitching.
- 9:06In the past with guys like Oliva and Caru, it was felt that the way to beat the twins was with good left handed pitching.
- 9:14But it's the right handers that have been getting the twins this year and with a lot of Oliva's you consider that he has missed 23 games and still has over a hundred hits.
- 9:25And by far the top hitter in the American League. It's been a tremendous loss for Minnesota and then to lose to LeBrou and now Caru today.
- 9:33Murphy with another throw to first and Braun back with a skip and a hop.
- 9:40the ball is underway, no score. Braun leading off the Minnesota first inning with a base hit and the count is one strike on Tobar.
- 9:46Reese to follow the pitch. Taken low, gets away from Stevenson but not far enough for any advance.
- 10:02Try to hear the news of two of the starters for the American League in the All-Star game, Boog Powell and Ray Fossey apparently will not see duty next Tuesday in Detroit.
- 10:14Throw to first and Braun back before the tag. Fossey with a ligament problem in his left hand and Powell with a hairline fracture of the wrist.
- 10:26Minnesota first and Braun back. Ben Morgan is the coach for the twins there at first base and across the way Frankie Croffetti hands cup to his mouth,
- 10:34shouting support to the hitter and to the baserunner. Murphy settles to the belt, his 1-1 pitch just outside with a slider, 2-1.
- 10:57Murphy very deliberate here in the opening inning with Steve Braun, a good baserunner at first. Again the throw to first base and Braun had only a one step lead.
- 11:06Good crowd on this Thursday afternoon. It's a 10th annual fly-in, more than 150 small planes flying into the Twin Cities for the action.
- 11:16the runner goes, the pitch is grounded over the head of Murphy, charged by Alomar. Throw to first, not in time.
- 11:30Braun breaking for second base and Kovar throwing his bat at the ball, sent a little one hopper over Murphy's head.
- 11:37And Alomar moving to cover second base, was able to come up with a ball on the edge of the grass in front of second,
- 11:43but by the time he played it over to Spencer it was too late to get the speedy Kovar.
- 11:48Murphy in disgust with that kind of hit just takes the rosin bag and throws it over his right shoulder back on the grass.
- 11:55Braun at second, Kovar at first, no one out. Here's Rich Reese, swings, grounds it to the left side. O'Brien goes to second for one, that's all they'll get.
- 12:04Alomar after getting the forest, tops his arm making sure that Braun didn't round too far at third. He was going to throw over to third base.
- 12:11the runners at third and first one up, Cardenas the hitter and WePaws for station identification.
- 12:16From the Met in Bloomington, Minnesota, this is the Angels Radio Network.
- 12:20And your Arizona baseball station for Angels baseball is KMND radio in Mesa, Arizona. It's 28 and a half minutes past the hour of 11 o'clock.
- 12:30When threatening in the first inning, Leo Cardenas moved into the number four slot in the batting order by Regnus, the hitter, the pitch,
- 12:46low and outside with a fastball. At third base, Steve Braun. At first, Rich Reese on the fielder's choice.
- 12:53Jim Holt would be next. Cardenas hitting 286 as ten home runs and a very impressive RBI count, 43.
- 13:05He figures to be named by Weaver as one of his backup infielders for the All-Star game.
- 13:14Murphy ready, the pitch. Swung on and missed. Good fastball. Right-hander against right-hander.
- 13:23the outfield playing Cardenas is shade toward right center. They give him the gap in left center field.
- 13:30Infield back. They'll give up a run for a chance at a double play.
- 13:36Right-hander's pitch. Swung on a drive to right field. Canegliero has to go back on it. Makes the catch. Braun tagged field score easily from third.
- 13:44the twins lead one to nothing.
- 13:55Cardenas with his 44th RBI on the line drive sacrifice fly. Reese holds at first base with two out here center fielder Jim Holt. Holt batting 273.
- 14:08George Brant-Alier moves into the on deck circle. Hold of green tee left-handed hitter. Close stance.
- 14:17He stands direct in the batter's box. the pitch inside ball one. the twins get a run in the bottom of the first inning.
- 14:32Reese with Spencer holding him on. the pitch. Curve. Waved at and missed. A change curve and Holt pulls at a one-handed swing.
- 14:44the Angels will welcome a new outfielder when they fly to Oakland for tomorrow night's opener of the four game weekend series. Tommy Reynolds will be there waiting for the Californians.
- 14:54Recall from Salt Lake City. the pitch. Inside corner for a called strike and it's one and two to Jim Holt. He thought it was too far in.
- 15:06And of course when Fregoti has his operation then the Angels will bring up somebody to replace him.
- 15:17One ball two strikes to count. the pitch by Murphy. Inside at the weight.
- 15:25Tony Oliva with that tremendous start hitting 374 an 18 home run. Nearly 50 RBI.
- 15:36And yet he's missed almost well over three weeks of play. There goes Reese. the pitch flung on and missed. Strike three. It was a foul tipped.
- 15:45And Stevenson after juggling the ball was able to come up with it on the second chance just before it hit the ground.
- 15:51Murphy with a strikeout to end the first inning. A run on two hits. No errors and a man left for Minnesota. And after one wins one. Angels nothing.

- 16:55John Spencer, John Spencer.
- 17:031-0 Minnesota, top of the second, John Stevenson, Ken McMullen, and Jim Spencer to hit against young right hander Steve Luber.
- 17:11Luber takes an unusual position before starting his wind up. He's almost facing the third base Dungog with his left foot way off the side of the rubber.
- 17:25He rocks into motion, right hander delivers, swung on and popped up. Middle of the diamond, George Thomas the third baseman in front of the mound, lets it drop!
- 17:36George Thomas at the last second saw Rick Reese coming over from first base and the ball dropped between them.
- 17:45Stevenson will be credited I imagine with a base hit. No one touched the ball.
- 17:50Luber the pitcher, it's his job to call out the man he thinks could catch it.
- 17:56And it's possible that the rookie was mute on the play and at the last second Thomas figured it was Reese and Reese figured it was Thomas and Stevenson winds up with a gift single.
- 18:07Landing about 50 feet in front of the play.
- 18:11John the leading angel hitter with a 2.95 average. Here's Ken McMullen batting 2.50. He looks at a strike.
- 18:19Mack with 11 home runs and 36 runs batted in. He has four runs batted in in the two game series.
- 18:30Angel fan the tying run at first. Luber at the belt for the first time.
- 18:35the pitch, swung on and rounded into right field for a base hit. Stevenson at the round second on his way to third.
- 18:41Tobar's throw is going to be close. It's cut off by Cardenas and Stevenson rolls into third base.
- 18:48the ball almost hit John Stevenson as McMullen who has been working on hitting the ball to right field executed the hit behind the runner perfectly.
- 18:57He found the gap between Reese and the second baseman Braun and grounded it right through the legs of the runner Stevenson as he was hampering the second base.
- 19:06Runners at third and first and no one out in the second inning. And here's first baseman Jim Spencer.
- 19:15Angel's trail won nothing. the small car expert has asked us to invite you to come on in. Let him help you pick the perfect Dotson for you.
- 19:25Remember he's the expert. Your Southern California Dotson dealer. So see him soon.
- 19:31Spencer, second to McMullen and RBI's on the club has 29 and a chance to tie it up with an out.
- 19:39the ball will play back looking for a double play chance. Stevenson just fair speed at third. McMullen at first.
- 19:46Luber from the belt to pit. Low ball one. the outfield. Pulled toward right.
- 19:54Some nervous pacing out in the Minnesota bullpen but no one's throwing.
- 20:03Young right hander Steve Luber. Good size. Six three and one ninety five.
- 20:11At the belt checks McMullen and looks at Stevenson and the pit. Change for a strike.
- 20:17Well thrown. He kept it in tight on Jim Spencer. One and one the count.
- 20:23Luber is a junior majoring in physical education at Missouri Southern College. Makes his home in Joplin, Missouri.
- 20:31His father, professional baseball player and infielder in the Cleveland Indians chain never made it to the big club.
- 20:39Luber says the one one pit. Spencer lays off the change and it's two and one. Ball was down low.
- 20:51the angels with twenty five hits in the first two games of the series.
- 20:56And there's nothing like a lot of base hits to make a ball club feel well and you can sense that in the entire roster.
- 21:04Everyone getting a lift by the improved hitting. the pit.
- 21:10Long on bounce off the head of the bat toward second. the run comes in to throw the first base for the out and the game is tied. One one.
- 21:17Spencer did not hit it hard off the end of the bat but he rolled it by Luber and Steve Braun then had to charge in his only play.
- 21:24But for the first baseman race Stevenson scores from third and McCullen moves in destroying position at second.
- 21:33Thirty RBI for Jim Spencer.
- 21:39Tony can make the arrow hitting to twenty seven.
- 21:43Interwalt calls time and meets Luber halfway to the mound on deck said O'Brien.
- 21:54the angels.
- 21:56With a perfect mark here at the Met with five straight wins.
- 22:03And there's seven and two against Minnesota on the season.
- 22:08Technically arrow a fill of the screen just Tuesday morning at their mouth.
- 22:15Possible role in the new TV series. the pitch.
- 22:19A strike with a slider.
- 22:23the part involves a motorcycle policeman.
- 22:30McMullen from second with one out of the second a one one tie. Luber checks the runner.
- 22:38the one strike that hung on a fly ball to center right at him hold he misjudges it and then comes in to make the catch.
- 22:45Hold kept waiting for the ball to get out to him and at the last moment he had to race in to make the play on the run.
- 22:55McMullen is second and your shortstop did O'Brien with first base open.
- 23:00Interwalt looked into the Minnesota dugout to see whether or not he wants to put O'Brien on and take his chances on Murphy.
- 23:09Murphy the top angel pitcher in terms of knocking in runs this year.
- 23:14Murphy has six RBI.
- 23:16They're going to pitch to O'Brien batting to twenty three.
- 23:21Luber banks off the rubber call time and wipes something around the right eye.
- 23:32Luber may wear contacts that actually don't make a contact that lands in the right eye.
- 23:41McMullen the second to us.
- 23:43Luber at the belt of this curve foul back on the screen and O'Brien got a hanging curve ball but couldn't get it solidly.
- 23:52Oh I'd like to have that one back.
- 23:58Lower deck bleachers out on left field about half full today.
- 24:01A lot of youngsters a lot of senior citizens here for the management at the Met today.
- 24:07the pitch high one and one Interwalt wanted the ball on outside and the change was high and inside.
- 24:16Singles by Stevenson and McMullen and Spencer's ground ball out getting the angels the time run in the second inning.
- 24:24And O'Brien awaiting the one one pitch with a chance to put the angels in the front.
- 24:30Luber's pitch outside with a curve two and one.
- 24:43Information on the fly and the long distance champion flying into the game today from Bismarck North Dakota three hundred eighty miles.
- 24:52And the largest community delegation thirty one people from Fergus Falls Minnesota.
- 24:58Low fastball at the knees two and two.
- 25:05Last year they had someone flying in from the southwest somewhere in Arizona.
- 25:13Two balls two strikes to Sid O'Brien.
- 25:15McMullen standing at second base two outs.
- 25:18In the top of the second the pitch curve foul to the screen.
- 25:23Off the glove of Middlewall angels will welcome back Clyde Wright from his two week military obligation.
- 25:33He'll be back Sunday and right is scheduled to pitch the second game of the doubleheader in Oakland.
- 25:38Rick Clark will get the assignment in the first game to pitch O'Brien swings and misses right through.
- 25:45the angels get the run to tie on two hits no airs and leave one and after an inning and a half angels one Minnesota one.
- 25:54You.
- 26:18Need to.
- 26:30Everybody has a favorite beer the one they say for those special occasions.
- 26:35Well if Budweiser is your favorite beer why not make it your regular beer too.
- 26:40Don't you deserve the best.
- 26:42Go all the way.
- 26:50You said it all.
- 26:52Well proven.
- 27:01I won one time and there's been a boring change made by the official score here at the Met.
- 27:07I believe it's George Thomas who will get the air but on Stevenson fly ball that.
- 27:12Without being cut in front of the mound to lead off the second takes the hit away from Stevenson an error has been charged so that makes it an unearned run the total sense of the angels in the secondary to run on a hit an error and one left.
- 27:25Randall you lead off the bottom of the second and look for the fastball inside.
- 27:28Alia.
- 27:38Alia Mitterwald and George Thomas three right handed hitters to face Murphy in the second.
- 27:45the pitch one on ground ball and one hop to McClellan hit hard but Mac right there to throw him out by 30 feet.
- 27:54After all the rain and heavily soaked outfield last night the tremendous drainage system here at Metropolitan Stadium and the turf could not be in better shape.
- 28:09George Mitterwald hitting 247.
- 28:14Dave Nehau has checked with the official score and it is George Thomas who is charged with the air.
- 28:20the pitch inside ball one somewhat unusual in that usually when the ball drops that way confusion by infielders or outfielders that hit is given changes one and in line down the left field line racing over.
- 28:35He cuts it off Mitterwald round first and he'll hold on a long single fast fielding by Gonzalez and a tap throw back and Mitterwald just does get the first base ahead of the tag by Jim Spencer Alomar noting Mitterwald not throwing back the first after taking his turn.
- 28:51Alomar has to throw over to Spencer and almost got Mitterwald in a casual move returning to the bag.
- 29:00Long single from Mitterwald third hit off Murphy. Here's George Thomas he swings and lines it into the second deck.
- 29:09Mitterwald at first base one out a one one tie. Thomas has only one hit in 18 at bat and joining the twins.
- 29:19George is returning home he was born here in Minneapolis and went to the University of Minnesota.
- 29:24the pitch a strike on the inside corner going to Thomas signed out of the University of Minnesota baseball program by the Detroit Tigers.
- 29:39the pitch checked his swing played umpire McCoy says he held back and here comes Lefty Phillips.
- 29:46He wants McCoy to ask for help from first base umpire Odom it appeared that Thomas had a pretty good swing and Phillips is now asking for help from Odom and Odom immediately says no no he didn't go around.
- 30:02One ball two strikes on Thomas.
- 30:13Thomas is on duty with the angels in 61 62 and 63 now 33 years old.
- 30:23One of the funny men in the game great sense of humor.
- 30:27Hit by Murphy serves one on a little flying foul territory Spencer racing into foul territory over the shoulder catch by Spencer as he makes the basket basket grab about 1520 feet foul and racing down into the right field corner.
- 30:43Good play by Spencer for the second out.
- 30:46the pitcher Luber Luber has been up just three times no hit.
- 30:57the two pitchers in this game physically built very much alike.
- 31:03Both are six three Luber a little heavier about 10 pounds heavier than Murphy at 195.
- 31:11And three years younger before Murphy can throw for a six Luber backs out of the batter's box and again wiping it is high.
- 31:21One one tie two out the fifth but it out in front of the plate Murphy up with it goes to first and plenty of time as Luber tried to bond his way on Murphy throws out the opposing pitcher no run to hit no man left the twin story in the second inning and after two at the match the angels won Minnesota won.
- 31:40You know when you're the only one to do something is kind of special.
- 31:45Ted Williams being the only man to hit 400 for a full season in the last 40 years Continental Airlines has a distinction that may not quite rival the splendid splinters but they're mighty proud of it. They have the only 747 service from Los Angeles directly to Denver.
- 32:12They're not just a little bit groovy yet intimate and luxurious with comfort and personal attention.
- 32:17Well you just can't get on any other airline and coach and economy is stretched out with first class leg room and wherever you sit whatever you pay.
- 32:26You have the added pleasure with Don well Dave Nehauz and Dick Nelson this is Dick Enberg at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington Minnesota the total is after two the angels a run on a hit and no errors Minnesota one run three hits and one error.
- 32:41In the top of the third inning it'll be Murphy and Alomar and Rivers to oppose right hander Steve Luber and I call it for you.
- 32:47Here's Don well thank you.
- 32:48Let's have Murphy lead it off the angels with one hit then they may have been given a Stevenson earlier taken away and an error charge to George Thomas.
- 32:57And interesting how they determined about the placement of the error lined by Luber and the pitch on the way and the fastball is low on our side ball one. It appeared that George Thomas was a bit on the first base right of the fixing circle when that ball dropped in.
- 33:12But apparently they must have called down to the Minnesota bench to make some sort of determination.
- 33:16Well delivery is one on a long drive all down the line this will sail off well up into the bleacher seat.
- 33:23Back beyond that and back to the grass embankment down the left of the line the count is one and one.
- 33:29Daddy Alomar will follow Sandy a tap out the mound his first time up.
- 33:35Steve Luber into the motion and the pitch fastball buzzed over the outside edge one and two.
- 33:42It looks like one of those short arm pitchers the darks are in that fastball seems to be very sneaky fast one to delivery now and it's a curve and line drive base that center field.
- 33:54So Murphy is on.
- 34:02That'll bring up second baseman Sandy Alomar and Sandy over one.
- 34:08In addition to the fly in promotion that they have with all of the pilots coming from various areas with their small aircraft their private aircraft.
- 34:18There's also a ladies day out here senior citizens day family day.
- 34:23So as a result of very fine turn on this Thursday afternoon Alomar batting left handed that overly close stance and Luber getting ready at the belt the pitch on the way and Sandy
- 34:35first of all at the first base side but Luber picked it up goes to second gets one there and that's all they'll get.
- 34:40One of all by Alomar that he angles toward the mound and Steve Luber able to pick it up very easily and the flip side to Leo Coginus the shortstop covering a second base.
- 34:50So Murphy is gone the angels have one down one on and the batter will be center field of Mickey Rivers and Mickey has bounced out to Steve Braun his first time up.
- 34:58Mickey wandering around behind the plate umpire and look up the line towards Sandy Alomar and the look toward the third base judge Rocky Bridges.
- 35:23That's taken by Luber and look over the shoulder toward the end of the pitch that's all there for striking the two on one.
- 35:29the group that came in from Fergus Falls to win the group title in their play and 31 person lands about here at White Cloud Airport not too distant from Metropolitan Stadium.
- 35:46Play taken by Sandy and he will draw a pot.
- 35:56the angels and the plans even up one one top half of the third now so with more of a message to it to drive Alomar back.
- 36:06Sandy with 21 stolen bases and thought of the four times if you got to longer late at the dive back.
- 36:16To make this young man work always with the possibility and they throw it away and I'm trying to get him to concentrate on what might happen here.
- 36:27One strike on Rivers Alomar goes and the pitch was a third to second base and they won't get it.
- 36:36With his 20 seconds stolen base a big jump on the pitcher Luber it was a running start for Sandy Alomar and the throw by a middle wall through the cardinal not nearly a time.
- 36:47So Sandy with his 20 seconds Rivers remains at the planet Maccada Mickey is ball one and strike one.
- 36:58And Tony Gonzalez watches all this from the undec position.
- 37:05Luber now getting himself out of the one one delivery on the way the Rivers curve cut on pop up to be on the right side of the infield.
- 37:25I had to set the Tony Gonzalez now from the angels standpoint here on the top half of the third with a game even at one one angels one run to hit and Minnesota one run.
- 37:42Alomar backing out to rather lengthy lead at second base.
- 37:48Luber gets it ready and here's the first pitch Tony Gonzalez.
- 38:02So Tony rocks out his first home run for 1971 in a big spot here the angels lead 3-1.
- 38:10Sandy Alomar cross on plate and he greets Tony Gonzalez as Gonzalez rips it out 365 feet away into the small bleacher section out toward the world corner of the starboard in right field.
- 38:24And Gonzalez then with his first home run the angels now lead 3-1 and for the Californians their third hit and the home run the distance three hundred and seventy four feet.
- 38:34And just as it was Tony's first home run of the year the first major league home run offered by young Steve Luber he's been touched up.
- 38:44All right the batter now John Stevenson and the motion and the picture on the way to John five all straight away center field.
- 38:50No problem.
- 38:51But maybe now hope coming in late and hope now one handed as he charges in the shallow center field.
- 38:57So Jim Hope getting a light break on the fly ball but comes in and makes the grab to retire the side.
- 39:04For the angels though two runs in the inning they're the two hits the big one the home run by Tony Gonzalez.
- 39:10No errors and nobody left and the score at the end of the top of the third angels three Minnesota one.
- 39:16Hello small car expert you're on the air.
- 39:18You want to turn your radio down please.
- 39:19I'm sorry a small car expert did you tell that last caller that there's a perfect Datsun for everyone.
- 39:24Yes I did.
- 39:25Small car expert you're on the air.
- 39:26I'm looking for a zippy two door sedan.
- 39:28Try the Datsun 510 goes from zero to sixty in less than 14 seconds.
- 39:32But it's got to be comfortable.
- 39:33It is.
- 39:34Small car expert.
- 39:35Listen I've had it with my small cars kids climbing on me dog with a hot tongue panning all over the backseat.
- 39:41I need more room.
- 39:42I'd suggest the Datsun 510 four door plenty of room and at a very low cost.
- 39:46How about a station wagon.
- 39:47Datsun makes a five door wagon plenty of extras included in the purchase price.
- 39:50Does Datsun make a truck.
- 39:52Yep the perfect pickup little hustler America's best selling import truck. Listen I've got to take another call.
- 39:56Anything else.
- 39:57Yeah.
- 39:58If my husband was you.
- 39:59Drive a Datsun then decide.
- 40:04To help you pick your favorite Datsun see the small car expert your nearby Southern California Datsun dealer.
- 40:11Drive a Datsun then decide.
- 40:20Moving out of the last half of the third with the angels down in front.
- 40:23Three one Minnesota will start it off with their lead man.
- 40:26Second baseman Steve Rod as Rod Carew with a bad cold is out of the lineup today.
- 40:31It'll be Ron Tovar and Rick.
- 40:34Sticking on our conversation with Joe Rigney last night and we were talking about a couple of individuals on this team.
- 40:40One being Cesar Tovar and the other Leo Cognizant and without with the absence of Tony Oliva and Harmon Kilibrew.
- 40:48And we're talking about leadership on the Minnesota team that Tovar performs best when he can look over his shoulder and see those two guys in the lineup behind him.
- 40:57I think it's something that we easily overlook the fact that teams with the great star the great hitter maybe a couple of good hitters Boston with a Reggie Smith and a Kyle Jostremski.
- 41:06And the other hitters become better ballplayers because they know they've got the big guy in the lineup and even if they don't hit someone like a Jostremski or a Kilibrew or Oliva will get the hit.
- 41:16the pressure is telling on Tovar and Cardenas.
- 41:19They're not the same ballplayers that that perform with the full lineup active for Minnesota.
- 41:27And frankly in the first two games this season series we've never seen Tovar look quite so bad.
- 41:33He seems to be pressing and over swinging.
- 41:35And another thing he just he gets a feeling that he isn't enjoying the game as much.
- 41:40That may be rather critical but it just appears that way that he isn't enjoying things as much as when he has Tony Oliva and Carmen Kilibrew on the lineup.
- 41:52And the way for Sandy Elomar Sandy went back into the dugout for perhaps an exchange for sunglasses and Elomar out of the spot a second base now waiting for Tom Murphy to deal here with Steve Brown the fastball over the inside edge like one.
- 42:09Brown had a base that is first time up and he checked across with the Minnesota run.
- 42:14So the angels lead it by a pair three to one early in the game.
- 42:18We're right back to the plate and a curve that travels a little bit high one and one.
- 42:23So far Tom Murphy has given up three hits one was an infield hit by Tovar.
- 42:28Ron with a single and George Medarol with a base there the minutes and a one one to the three and it's high and tight ball two two and one.
- 42:41the glorious day here in the city I deal with it and the pitch Murphy fastball right away ball three three and one.
- 42:58Right back three one and left him one post ball four.
- 43:15This is KMND radio in Mesa, Arizona.
- 43:18It's 12 o'clock.
- 43:26So far the batter and the pitch on the way and so far I think the fastball high ball one.
- 43:33After all we've said about Sovar is liable to explode right here.
- 43:38So far with the infield hit in the first inning.
- 43:41Ron with his way the pitch so far away from the second base and he's in there.
- 44:01the throwing out for Ken McMullen has a throw was well out in front of Jim Spencer and no chance for Jim to try to handle it cleanly.
- 44:11This one then rebounds off the railing in front of the back seat.
- 44:14the broad man getting up on his feet and traveling the second base.
- 44:17So Sovar lines to Ken McMullen and the angels shooting for a double play failed to get it and the net result is that Ron winds up in a throwing pot.
- 44:26the first time up one down from Minnesota last half of the third and the pitch that's all the way almost all the way.
- 44:34Just stop made by Stevenson as he runs to his left.
- 44:48Tom Murphy eyes Stevenson for the time so the curve and it's in there for a strike off the breaking ball one and one.
- 44:57With Tom Murphy and the 11 losses that Murphy has suffered.
- 45:04Rather incredible situation right here that the angels have three runs in support of Murphy's early fastball rip down in one and two.
- 45:13This combined like really 11 losses without coming back to the record books again.
- 45:23I believe the angels have scored only seven runs in the 11 defeats of Murphy.
- 45:27It absorbed the season so they have a little right here.
- 45:31Next up is the ground ball off of the first base.
- 45:33I spent the move then picked it up.
- 45:35It goes to the bag very easy play for Jim as this ball is bounced almost to the back and sent to take care of Reese.
- 45:43Ron goes to third and Tony Gonzalez moving more away from the left field line now as Cardenas gets ready to find himself with a batter's box after dealing with a prime car.
- 45:53Mecci Rivers and straightaway center field.
- 45:55Tony Caniglio.
- 45:57Normal depth out in right field but Gonzalez some distance off the left field line with the right hander card in the set so they're playing him in that direction after our left center field.
- 46:07Murphy eyes are on her.
- 46:08Ron at third he comes well down the line.
- 46:10the pitch is cut on five all twice the other way down the right field line.
- 46:13It will drop out of play into the season.
- 46:21You know officially canvassing the Minnesota organization concerning the Washington franchise and of course Minnesota the Griffith Robertson plan very much involved at one time with that Washington franchise the old Washington Senator and it's like today they curve and it's been too close to count as one on one.
- 46:44the feeling is that the senators will move.
- 46:51And the feeling is that they will move to Dallas.
- 47:00Now Murphy getting ready for the one on pitch here at the Leo Cardenas to down blonde around the third and here comes the pitch on good change by Murphy way down and miss one and two.
- 47:14the story has it that Bob short the owner of the senators needs more than just a reduction in the rent at Kennedy Stadium from the Washington DC armory board he needs about three million dollars.
- 47:27One to five on the right side going to be that that handles the top dispenser for the.
- 47:34I have a look of the infield grass and it took off on a very erratic up with daddy Elomar reacting well to it.
- 47:40Picked it up and feed the dispenser and that's all for Minnesota.
- 47:44No one no hit one or one man left at the end of three angels three minutes on one as a motorist.
- 47:52You may be asking does every 10 work two hundred and ninety seven cars representing California's total car population tested Chevron gasoline with F310.
- 48:03Here's what some of the participants said after the test Mrs.
- 48:06Mary Buchanan the car always smoked ever since we bought it it's smoked but it has controlled the smoking by using F310.
- 48:15It doesn't smoke as much.
- 48:17Mr. J.C. McDougall I'd say that my motor seems to run better smoother and it seems like a clean new motor rather than a used car.
- 48:30While not all cars in the test showed emission reductions hydrocarbon exhaust was reduced an average 13.9 percent for the group as a whole.
- 48:38Carbon monoxide was reduced an average eleven point six percent.
- 48:43Mr. Earl Hudspeth the car seems to got better pick up this Marsha Amici.
- 48:49It's just like a brand new car when I use F310 in it.
- 48:52F310 it works.
- 48:57Kay oyun
- 48:59it off earlier on the fourth inning and everything wrong outside wall 1.
- 49:13I want to find out to up
- 49:24back to the base in the second
- 49:25inning and the pitch that ball
- 49:28rumbles blowing outside ball
- 49:30three three.
- 49:32Inspector will be up next and
- 49:33then Tony can lay off the
- 49:35board.
- 49:36He's a play three one.
- 49:39One of the angels have played
- 49:40this job that this year every
- 49:42year for that three nothing
- 49:43pitch up on the outside and
- 49:45the first strike to make a three
- 49:56and one.
- 49:57Dave Lover the right handed
- 49:58deals the pitch has got on and
- 49:59Clarence Powell going to be on
- 50:01the plane on the first base
- 50:02side.
- 50:14We're now waiting for a three
- 50:15and three to get back into the
- 50:17business.
- 50:21Tightly guard that right side
- 50:22too.
- 50:23Tennessee to go that way.
- 50:24Max Wang put this down the
- 50:26right field line foul.
- 50:28Again the call and trying to go
- 50:30in that direction.
- 50:33Good beat on this one and why
- 50:36wasn't the NFLget the ball big
- 50:54chapter a base that Max is 2 for
- 50:56the matter will be Jim Spencer.
- 50:58Mark Spencer, Jeff Spencer.
- 51:01All right, the matter is Jim Spencer.
- 51:03McMuffin on the first base.
- 51:05Nobody out here for the Angels in the fourth.
- 51:07Leonard Rogers, the fourth.
- 51:09the third.
- 51:11the fourth.
- 51:13the fourth.
- 51:15the fourth.
- 51:17the fourth.
- 51:19the fourth.
- 51:21the fourth.
- 51:23the fourth.
- 51:25the fourth.
- 51:27the fourth.
- 51:29the fourth.
- 51:31Leonard Righthander goes to work, and Jim drives a foul back on the screen for strike one.
- 51:35Dick Nelson has just presented me a batch of cards.
- 51:39They look like personal cards. They have various messages on them.
- 51:43These are your mother?
- 51:45Did mom give you these?
- 51:47She was on a bus to work.
- 51:49Got these cards?
- 51:51To Winona, huh?
- 51:53Now there are a few messages on here that we can't pass along, but...
- 51:56Very interesting cards, Dick.
- 51:58the first strike delivery, Ben Flang drives a fly ball out of the right field.
- 52:01Kovar back on the warning track for this one, and Kovar picks it off.
- 52:05About 370 feet away.
- 52:07So, Ben's running well. He didn't get everything that he wanted out of that pitch.
- 52:12But he drives Kovar back on the warning track.
- 52:14the Angels have one down, McFarland back to first base, and the batter will be Tony Canigliaro.
- 52:19So, there's one card that Dick has passed along to me.
- 52:23This is compliments of the hot fish shop in Winona, Minnesota.
- 52:28And the card says, Isn't this a beautiful day?
- 52:32Just watch some guy louse it up.
- 52:40At the pitch, the T
- 52:43outside at the waste ball line.
- 52:44Did you know Bush Gardens is open seven days a week from now until September.
- 52:48Plan to spend today there's soon low admission, fun for the entire family.
- 52:53Just take the San Diego freeway to Roscoe Boulevard, Bush Gardens and Van Nuys.
- 52:57It's an experience you'll never forget.
- 52:591-0 offering now to Canigliaro.
- 53:01Passball runs inside.
- 53:03Ball two, two and 0.
- 53:05And a group here from Watertown, South Dakota and from Elmwood, Wisconsin.
- 53:11See those cards again.
- 53:13the
- 53:16I want to have Dick read it in its entirety.
- 53:42I want to have Dick read it in its entirety.
- 54:11I want to have Dick read it in its entirety.
- 54:40I want to have Dick read it in its entirety.
- 55:09I want to have Dick read it in its entirety.
- 55:38I want to have Dick read it in its entirety.
- 56:07I want to have Dick read it in its entirety.
- 56:13the landlord reduces the rent that isn't going to ease that piece of financial pain too much.
- 56:23Murphy the batter bases jammed and the infield plays for two.
- 56:26Murphy half swing, curve ball and strike one.
- 56:40Dan Williams is now throwing in the bullpen.
- 56:47Williams and Strickland have been at work as Steve Luber tries to work his way out of a touch spot here with only one down on the bases jam.
- 56:54And the fastball low with it one and one.
- 57:01You have a sign out there the board says howdy.
- 57:04Unity, chilly and Polk County, Wisconsin.
- 57:11Oh, chilly Wisconsin. That's just got on live foul and they pushed out a play.
- 57:25Come out to the stadium on a day like this and the way the weather is and really is kind of a seems like a state fair day today.
- 57:39So the feeling is going to have a few sack races as soon as this one ends.
- 57:42One, two, delivery.
- 57:44Murph swings and misses high a fastball.
- 57:46That's how Murphy strikes out and it's going to be up to Sandy Alomar to try to fortify the Angels three to one lead.
- 57:57I figure that the addictive sack race catch the great big contest immediately follow.
- 58:09Women with their own fans selling some baked goods.
- 58:17Rise for the best password.
- 58:21Danny Alomar batting left handed the following around a third. He's the lead man here.
- 58:27the Alomar drives the foul upstairs and out of play in the count of strike one.
- 58:31Come on the third.
- 58:32Tony can agree on the right of a second base and the Angels have been a Brian at first base.
- 58:37So after the intentional walk was given up to Brian with Murphy do next and he struck out Murph.
- 58:42So now the Angels have two away here in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 58:51We'll find out what manner of man Steve Luber is when it's a pressure point.
- 58:56One strike that curve inside one to one.
- 59:09the difficulties for baseball today I believe is the fact that they have forced that too many pitchers.
- 59:21But he won one delivery that's all filed away.
- 59:24I said what do you mean by that.
- 59:29I think a case in point is but why 11 of the Minnesota staff.
- 59:36I've got a lot of work and my just in the pitching coach certainly an agreement and I think you're ready to.
- 59:42But the twins were forced into a corner they needed some pitching and they needed it.
- 59:46Quickly and why 11 was brought up but brought up too soon.
- 59:51For the man that could have had another year perhaps two years in the minor league here's the one to offering now curve line drive line drive base hit right field Oh I said it's funny.
- 1:00:00the base guard.
- 1:00:02So to the plate not in time and
- 1:00:03on the third goes to Brian on
- 1:00:04the second base goes down the
- 1:00:05bar.
- 1:00:06No the angels lead by one.
- 1:00:10Daddy on a line of big clutch
- 1:00:11spot here.
- 1:00:13the youngsters the Lover and
- 1:00:15Sandy collects to RBI.
- 1:00:18No Regney coming out that will
- 1:00:19be off for the youngster.
- 1:00:23And this is what Minnesota
- 1:00:26finding itself in this
- 1:00:27particular position then.
- 1:00:28It's the same thing for Detroit.
- 1:00:31You look at the box for the
- 1:00:32Tigers you see all the new
- 1:00:34pitching names that have come
- 1:00:35along in a short period of time
- 1:00:36these men who have been run up
- 1:00:38from their Toledo farm far very
- 1:00:41quickly and the net result is a
- 1:00:45from a maturity standpoint.
- 1:00:50Have to figure maturity not only
- 1:00:52from a physical angle but from a
- 1:00:53mental angle as well and some of
- 1:00:55these young men are just not
- 1:00:56prepared certainly has to be the
- 1:01:00case with Steve Lover who is
- 1:01:01giving the ball to Bill Regney
- 1:01:03right now.
- 1:01:03Young Steve leading the mom in
- 1:01:17two cases Dave Larros and Lloyd
- 1:01:21Allen.
- 1:01:22We talk about young people and
- 1:01:24how they can stand the pressures
- 1:01:26of this game and it figures that
- 1:01:29say at age 20 or age 18 age 19
- 1:01:3220 21 pressure of the sport when
- 1:01:35you're the middleman out there
- 1:01:36and you're surrounded perhaps by
- 1:01:38veterans and you're trying to do
- 1:01:39a job that really calls for a
- 1:01:41veteran pitcher for the angels
- 1:01:44with the left hand and right
- 1:01:46hand a combination of Larros and
- 1:01:48Allen.
- 1:01:48We're saying the other night
- 1:01:51that this probably is the best
- 1:01:52left handed right hand
- 1:01:53combination since the Motsy and
- 1:01:55our last game.
- 1:01:56John Motsy and Ray and our last
- 1:01:57game before the American League
- 1:01:58with the Cleveland Broncos and
- 1:02:03I'm sure in trying to analyze
- 1:02:04the whole logic here involving
- 1:02:07a young man when is he old enough
- 1:02:09to pitch and I think we all
- 1:02:10become confused by chronological
- 1:02:12ages.
- 1:02:14I guess the best example for the
- 1:02:16twenty nine years of the
- 1:02:17twenty one year old who are in
- 1:02:20terms of their own emotional
- 1:02:21maturity much older than that.
- 1:02:23Floyd Allen at 19 seemed to have
- 1:02:26the poise of a man 25 26 years
- 1:02:28old and the other side of the
- 1:02:30world.
- 1:02:30He has a great emotional
- 1:02:32stability that has allowed him
- 1:02:34not only to pitch well but then
- 1:02:36handled the incredible pressure
- 1:02:37that is mounted from the press
- 1:02:39as he has been so successful
- 1:02:41during the year.
- 1:02:43Not all 21 year olds are so well
- 1:02:46blessed.
- 1:02:49I think that Rick would probably
- 1:02:50be very quick to agree that in
- 1:02:54the case of the Minnesota staff
- 1:02:55and I imagine that Billy Martin
- 1:02:57if we had Billy here with that
- 1:02:59Detroit ball club and the changes
- 1:03:01he has made and the young men
- 1:03:02that we have seen them run back
- 1:03:03and forth between Toledo and
- 1:03:05Detroit he would say the same
- 1:03:06thing that we are.
- 1:03:07We have these young men on a
- 1:03:08pressure cooker.
- 1:03:09We need their services now and
- 1:03:11it's unfortunate that we have to
- 1:03:12use them as quickly at this level
- 1:03:14as we have to.
- 1:03:16They're really not given a
- 1:03:17chance.
- 1:03:18I know for the angels they worry
- 1:03:19that Mickey Rivers might have
- 1:03:21been called upon to sing.
- 1:03:23Ideally they would like to have
- 1:03:25rivers play the entire year at
- 1:03:26Salt Lake City but because of
- 1:03:28injuries and other problems
- 1:03:29here's rivers at the plate right
- 1:03:31now and maybe for his own
- 1:03:33betterment for the future he
- 1:03:34could still be at Salt Lake
- 1:03:35City.
- 1:03:36Another case in point would be
- 1:03:37Rick Park and to see what has
- 1:03:39happened to Rick now that he's
- 1:03:40been able to come back to the
- 1:03:41major league level and after
- 1:03:43some very shattering experiences
- 1:03:45before the pitch on the way the
- 1:03:46river is good curve drawn by Jim
- 1:03:48Strickland as a new pitcher and
- 1:03:49he bends it through the left
- 1:03:51hander dealing with rivers here
- 1:03:53and he runs the strike through
- 1:03:54the plate.
- 1:03:55Mickey over to Sandy Alomar the
- 1:03:57one of the second base that a
- 1:03:58Brian around the third angels
- 1:04:00late 5 1 4th inning and the
- 1:04:02best one on how that like to
- 1:04:05see what Strickland has done.
- 1:04:07This is only a tenth of
- 1:04:08parents he has worked 12 and a
- 1:04:10fraction in a given up eight
- 1:04:11hits walks extra out nine
- 1:04:22interesting note about
- 1:04:23Strickland doing the run and
- 1:04:24earn run the private curve
- 1:04:25five minutes I wanted to unless
- 1:04:27they made a mistake but
- 1:04:29Strickland in his nine
- 1:04:30appearances the opposition has
- 1:04:33scored seven runs and none of
- 1:04:35the seven have been earned back
- 1:04:40with the next pitch curve wave
- 1:04:42that one handed by the heat to
- 1:04:43strike three so the angels are
- 1:04:46gone in the fourth inning but
- 1:04:47they make some noise here
- 1:04:49collecting two runs three hits
- 1:04:51in the inning no errors in a
- 1:04:52parallel to the score at the
- 1:04:53end of the top of the fourth
- 1:04:54angels five Minnesota one.
- 1:05:54You said it.
- 1:06:03Last night for the fourth
- 1:06:04inning this is John Wells the
- 1:06:05second berg and Dick Nelson and
- 1:06:07nice to have you with us along
- 1:06:08our angel network line.
- 1:06:09We hope you're having a very
- 1:06:11nice day wherever you happen to
- 1:06:12be located and listening to
- 1:06:14Santa.
- 1:06:17There's one card here that Dick
- 1:06:19Nelson's mother has passed along
- 1:06:20compliments of the hot fish
- 1:06:21shop and went on over the
- 1:06:22other side of the field.
- 1:06:25Here I am just as charming and
- 1:06:27sexy as you dreamed I did.
- 1:06:33I was dedicated to John Paul
- 1:06:34it to my TV director sitting up
- 1:06:37behind us here this afternoon
- 1:06:38is the pitch on the way to Jim
- 1:06:39Hall.
- 1:06:39That's well known for a while.
- 1:06:47I've never seen a defenseman yet
- 1:06:49that would be called sexy.
- 1:06:50I'm not back to Murphy's the
- 1:06:52pitch is picked up by a Murph
- 1:06:54after the battered ball by hope
- 1:06:55plans rather than drive in the
- 1:06:57top of Spencer for the out of
- 1:06:58Minnesota has one down and bring
- 1:07:00up the left fielder Brad Elliott
- 1:07:02who said that a lot about goalie
- 1:07:03too I think.
- 1:07:06Here's one card.
- 1:07:07She's passed along.
- 1:07:08I would like very much to make
- 1:07:10love to you tonight.
- 1:07:11And in parentheses it says if
- 1:07:13you are not interested please
- 1:07:14return this card to me as they
- 1:07:16are very expensive.
- 1:07:17I'm not going to do that.
- 1:07:21And it is a kind of on a good
- 1:07:23grade of being an old printer.
- 1:07:25So that's a good grade of stock.
- 1:07:27I can tell it's a good time.
- 1:07:30But delivery infrastructure
- 1:07:31value Murphy right back to him
- 1:07:33and this one is low.
- 1:07:34the count is one to one.
- 1:07:44Wide again by Irish Tom Goodker
- 1:07:47who's got a sweeping break to
- 1:07:48the now you're after it couldn't
- 1:07:49find it wanted to.
- 1:07:53And I have another message for
- 1:07:55you Richard.
- 1:07:59Want to run on Bob George short
- 1:08:02of buying plays it off a lot of
- 1:08:03high hops next to throw the
- 1:08:04center for the out of Minnesota
- 1:08:05has to down and the batter will
- 1:08:08be George better off the card
- 1:08:10that is again from the hot fish
- 1:08:12shop and went on a said beer they
- 1:08:15are a little bit slow down but
- 1:08:17it's a lovely end and I'm in no
- 1:08:20hurry.
- 1:08:31Here here.
- 1:08:32That's on the way.
- 1:08:32Bert fires the fastball over the
- 1:08:34outer edge for a strike and a
- 1:08:35thought one I'm going to have a
- 1:08:38card printed up something that
- 1:08:40was a lot of you.
- 1:08:46That's a high curve.
- 1:08:47Quick curve done by Murphy's
- 1:08:48fun on and this time that are
- 1:08:50well known to involving him in
- 1:08:53America last year.
- 1:08:55Two billion dollars in this
- 1:08:57handed out twice the amount in
- 1:09:00nineteen fifty and you know what
- 1:09:01to mean.
- 1:09:02I would say it's just like that
- 1:09:07one on five all going to be
- 1:09:08a lot of people are going out
- 1:09:10for it and that's what it's
- 1:09:12taken in for the out.
- 1:09:14Actually those are three words
- 1:09:17now that I've gone that far I
- 1:09:19can't remember the three words
- 1:09:20the IP stand for to ensure
- 1:09:23problems.
- 1:09:26That would be nice to leave
- 1:09:27sometime when someone expected
- 1:09:29to get a simply that car.
- 1:09:31It means to ensure problem.
- 1:09:34You know what was the amount
- 1:09:35that is two billion dollars.
- 1:09:37I dropped a billion last night.
- 1:09:39I just a billion last night.
- 1:09:40I ran out the car.
- 1:09:42One two three.
- 1:09:43That's the story here for
- 1:09:44Minnesota the story at the end
- 1:09:45of four eight until five
- 1:09:46minutes on a line.
- 1:10:13Our producer Dave Nehau
- 1:10:14suggested for me we have a
- 1:10:15commercial right here.
- 1:10:17Now the vacation season is well
- 1:10:18upon us.
- 1:10:19There is a suggestion on how to
- 1:10:20spend yours.
- 1:10:21Come home this summer.
- 1:10:22Take the family to see the
- 1:10:23family.
- 1:10:24You certainly get that feeling
- 1:10:25when you're up here in the
- 1:10:26Minneapolis St.
- 1:10:27Paul area.
- 1:10:27Come on home when you go home
- 1:10:30travel like the angels do.
- 1:10:31Don't drive but fly.
- 1:10:32And that's that way you spend
- 1:10:34more of your vacation on
- 1:10:35vacation.
- 1:10:36Compton Little makes it easy
- 1:10:37with family fairs to help take
- 1:10:39the high cost out of family
- 1:10:40buying the dozens of long
- 1:10:42town.
- 1:10:43So forget about all the
- 1:10:44preparation for driving.
- 1:10:45Call your travel agent instead
- 1:10:47he'll make all of your fine
- 1:10:48arrangements and see that you
- 1:10:49get one of continental low
- 1:10:50special affairs.
- 1:10:51So come home this summer.
- 1:10:52No place like home and do it on
- 1:10:54continental airlines.
- 1:10:55the proud bird with a golden
- 1:10:57sail.
- 1:10:57That's getting a play here.
- 1:11:00Tony Gonzalez leads off first
- 1:11:01pitch ground to second brought
- 1:11:03on the edge of the outfield
- 1:11:04grand throws him out.
- 1:11:07Gonzalez hitting his first home
- 1:11:08run of the year with a man on in
- 1:11:09the third inning that broke a
- 1:11:10one one time.
- 1:11:12Here's John Stevenson the angel
- 1:11:14line up loaded with left handed
- 1:11:15hitters.
- 1:11:16the manager Bill Rigney going
- 1:11:18to the south for Strickland who
- 1:11:19makes his home in Lakewood
- 1:11:20California went to Cal State
- 1:11:22Long Beach.
- 1:11:23He's six feet tall and one 80
- 1:11:24has one decision this year a
- 1:11:26win.
- 1:11:26It was against the angels May
- 1:11:2819th at Anaheim Stadium in
- 1:11:30relief of Jim Perry.
- 1:11:31He picked up the win.
- 1:11:37Stevenson 0 for 2.
- 1:11:40Upon the handle the pitch by
- 1:11:42Strickland hung on a man.
- 1:11:45I want to think about that
- 1:11:46business.
- 1:11:47I'll go into that venture with
- 1:11:48you.
- 1:11:49I think there will be a
- 1:11:49sometimes you know when someone
- 1:11:51has not given you good service
- 1:11:52and just land nicely printed
- 1:11:54cards saying the derivation of
- 1:11:56tip the IP to ensure pomp and
- 1:11:59line drive center field hole
- 1:12:00charges in and makes the catch.
- 1:12:05Actually the derivation of the
- 1:12:08word.
- 1:12:10It was used in the 18th century
- 1:12:11in English and the key period
- 1:12:14I.
- 1:12:15the birth that's when I first
- 1:12:17saw that was on the wall.
- 1:12:20Graffiti graffiti graffiti.
- 1:12:23It was on the old.
- 1:12:24It was.
- 1:12:25I forgot the name of the pub
- 1:12:26now but I remember it was
- 1:12:27written on the wall.
- 1:12:29Two outs this inning the angels
- 1:12:31five Minnesota one curveball to
- 1:12:34strike to Ken McMullen Mack 2
- 1:12:36for 2 a pair of singles he has
- 1:12:38scored a run.
- 1:12:38Ken has had six hits in the
- 1:12:40pregame series.
- 1:12:42He's not in for a round ball on
- 1:12:46one hop to the third baseman
- 1:12:47Thomas.
- 1:12:48He has it easily throws him out
- 1:12:50and the ending is over.
- 1:12:51Strickland retired all four men
- 1:12:53that he has faced in relief and
- 1:12:55does it easily.
- 1:12:57Angels in order are out in the
- 1:12:59fifth inning and we've completed
- 1:13:00four and a half innings at

- 1:14:25First pitch to George Thomas is
- 1:14:26taken for a strike.
- 1:14:27Thomas right handed hitter fouled
- 1:14:30out his first time up choking up
- 1:14:32on the handle Murphy's pitch
- 1:14:33going on a drive to right field
- 1:14:35can make the arrow has to give
- 1:14:36ground going back still back and
- 1:14:37makes the catch at the edge of
- 1:14:39the warning.
- 1:14:40Thomas hit it hard but within the
- 1:14:42range of the angel right fielder
- 1:14:44with one out in the bottom of the
- 1:14:45fifth inning let's pause for
- 1:14:47station identification for KMTC
- 1:14:50and all our stations in the west
- 1:14:51this is the angels radio network.
- 1:14:53Jim Strickland is the hitter.
- 1:14:56He takes a curve ball for a
- 1:14:57strike.
- 1:15:00Steve Luber was up just one time
- 1:15:03and tried to find his way on and
- 1:15:04was thrown out by Murphy.
- 1:15:05Curve hangs outside one and one
- 1:15:08one out known on bottom of the
- 1:15:10fifth inning the angels with a
- 1:15:11five to one lead as they go for
- 1:15:12a three game sweep here in
- 1:15:14Minnesota.
- 1:15:15Murphy kicks and deals outside
- 1:15:18with a fastball two and one
- 1:15:20strike.
- 1:15:20the angels are in the lead with
- 1:15:21a three game sweep outside with
- 1:15:24a fastball two and one.
- 1:15:28They're underway in Chicago and
- 1:15:30the Oakland A's have just scored
- 1:15:31four times in the third inning
- 1:15:33to lead Chicago four to one
- 1:15:34Thompson against Wood the pitch
- 1:15:37inside three and one to
- 1:15:39Strickland.
- 1:15:40Murphy has walked just one man
- 1:15:43and he has struck out one.
- 1:15:45He does not want to lose the
- 1:15:46pitcher Strickland.
- 1:15:47the line the pitch low and the
- 1:15:50Cardinal sin committed by Tom
- 1:15:52Murphy.
- 1:15:53He has a walk for the opposing
- 1:15:54pitcher.
- 1:15:56the second free pass given up by
- 1:15:57Murph and brings up second
- 1:15:59baseman Steve Braun.
- 1:16:00Braun proving to be a fine lead
- 1:16:01off hitter for Bill Rigney.
- 1:16:04In the series he has walked five
- 1:16:06times in the three games has a
- 1:16:08couple of hits and was safe on
- 1:16:09an error.
- 1:16:09So he's been on base eight times
- 1:16:11and two and a half ballgame.
- 1:16:13Murphy drops the ball in
- 1:16:15position for the second baseman
- 1:16:16Steve Braun.
- 1:16:17He's got the ball in position on
- 1:16:19the mound that's a block and on
- 1:16:21its way to second goes Jim
- 1:16:22Strickland Murphy as he was
- 1:16:25reading John Stevenson the ball
- 1:16:27just dropped out of his glove
- 1:16:30and that gives Strickland second
- 1:16:32base Murphy now looks back at
- 1:16:37second to pitch.
- 1:16:38Looked at a curve it'll cost him
- 1:16:39a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:16:42the A's would chuck Thompson
- 1:16:43against Wilbur Wood leading the
- 1:16:45game in the fourth inning the
- 1:16:47American League schedule tonight
- 1:16:48Kansas City and Milwaukee New
- 1:16:49York to Detroit Boston and
- 1:16:51Cleveland and Washington and
- 1:16:52Baltimore.
- 1:16:53the pitch is high a fastball one
- 1:16:55and one to Braun.
- 1:16:56Nationally Houston will play at
- 1:16:58San Francisco.
- 1:16:59That's an afternoon game and
- 1:17:01I'll be starting in about an
- 1:17:02hour at Candlestick.
- 1:17:04the Giants losing yesterday and
- 1:17:06still gained a half game on the
- 1:17:07Dodgers who dropped two to the
- 1:17:09Cubs curveball inside the Braun

- 1:17:12the Giants Cincinnati at
- 1:17:14Pittsburgh good night Montreal

- 1:17:45one out bottom of the fifth
- 1:17:46inning five to one angels the
- 1:17:48pitch flung on and bounced by
- 1:17:49the mound Alomar charging the
- 1:17:50ball bad hop but he picks it off
- 1:17:52and throws him out.
- 1:17:52Good play by Alomar on the third
- 1:17:55goes Strickland and with two
- 1:17:57outs the hitter will be Cesar
- 1:17:58Tovar.
- 1:18:02It's easy to take Sandy Alomar's
- 1:18:04play for granted.
- 1:18:06He has just been an outstanding
- 1:18:08player in the baseball
- 1:18:09displacement all season is
- 1:18:11average at 250.
- 1:18:12He's still at 20 seconds base
- 1:18:13today and Danny continuing to be
- 1:18:16the angels iron man.
- 1:18:18He's one of only a handful of
- 1:18:20players in the American League
- 1:18:22to play in every game of the
- 1:18:24season outside the Tovar ball
- 1:18:26one.
- 1:18:27These are an infield hit and he
- 1:18:29aligns to Ken McMullen the third
- 1:18:33in fact Alomar has the club
- 1:18:35record for consecutive game
- 1:18:37against the Tovar.
- 1:18:40He had two ninety six going into
- 1:18:41the season and it's appeared in
- 1:18:43all eighty eight games this year
- 1:18:45the only angel to do so outside
- 1:18:47of Tovar.
- 1:18:48No Minnesota player has played in
- 1:18:51every game Leo Cardenas has come
- 1:18:54closer.
- 1:18:55He is one.
- 1:19:02Murphy to open one on line to
- 1:19:05the right picked it off about a
- 1:19:07foot off the ground.
- 1:19:09So Tovar hitting in tough luck
- 1:19:11after he got a scratch single in
- 1:19:12the first inning.
- 1:19:13He is sent to pull it out the
- 1:19:15third baseman Ken McMullen.
- 1:19:17No runs no hits no errors the
- 1:19:19man left his third to the twins
- 1:19:20and after five at the net Angel
- 1:19:22five Minnesota one.
- 1:19:25Hey Dick I know a lot of people
- 1:19:26who found the perfect guy.
- 1:19:27I do today.
- 1:19:28the Dobson twelve hundred and a
- 1:19:30lot of people are calling them
- 1:19:31names like that guy with a fast
- 1:19:33back model.
- 1:19:34He calls it his beach wagon
- 1:19:35because both he and his girl can
- 1:19:36love their surfboards and great
- 1:19:38lunch in that roomy fold down
- 1:19:40rear seat compartment with a
- 1:19:41handy lift up rear.
- 1:19:42There's a two door sedan model
- 1:19:43too and a woman in our
- 1:19:44neighborhood calls it her
- 1:19:45shopping cart.
- 1:19:46It's just right for making a
- 1:19:47dash to the market to snap up a
- 1:19:49super special and a couple who
- 1:19:51spend a weekend out in the woods
- 1:19:52with the bird watch.
- 1:19:53Do you know what they call
- 1:19:54theirs.
- 1:19:55Well with those reclining
- 1:19:56bucket seats that make a guess
- 1:19:57that a weekend overnighter

- 1:20:02those extra features that no
- 1:20:03extra cost and gas mileage up to
- 1:20:0530 miles per gallon and a very
- 1:20:07low purchase price.
- 1:20:08What else could you call the two
- 1:20:10new Dobson twelve hundred
- 1:20:11Dotson calls them something
- 1:20:12special and a little something
- 1:20:14to the small car expert.
- 1:20:15You're nearby Southern
- 1:20:16California Dotson dealer.
- 1:20:17Find out if a new Dotson
- 1:20:19twelve hundred is the perfect
- 1:20:20Dobson for you.
- 1:20:21You can call it whatever you
- 1:20:22like but drive it up and decide
- 1:20:24after five innings of play at the
- 1:20:27Mets it's a little dangerous.
- 1:20:28Five run six hits one air
- 1:20:30Minnesota one run three hits and
- 1:20:32one air.
- 1:20:32Jim Strickland in the top of the
- 1:20:34sixth inning will face Jim
- 1:20:35Pester Tony Canaleo and Phil
- 1:20:37Bryan have an object about the
- 1:20:39pitchers selected by Earl Weaver
- 1:20:41for the American League All-Star
- 1:20:42squad by the blue Mike Coyar Jim
- 1:20:45Palmer Mickey Lovett Sam McDowell
- 1:20:48Andy Lovett and the
- 1:20:50American League is going to need
- 1:20:58plenty of pitching with the
- 1:20:59injuries and all that have
- 1:21:00occurred with frontline personnel
- 1:21:02for the American League.
- 1:21:05the pitch dispenser one nine and
- 1:21:07a little laugh foul the first
- 1:21:08baseman Rich Rickerson.
- 1:21:10the American League is going to
- 1:21:11need plenty of pitching with the
- 1:21:12injuries and all that have
- 1:21:14occurred with frontline personnel
- 1:21:15for the American League.
- 1:21:16the pitch dispenser one nine and
- 1:21:18a little laugh foul the first
- 1:21:19baseman Rich Reap will collect
- 1:21:20beyond Fred Kennedy.
- 1:21:22And he didn't even want to look
- 1:21:24at it.
- 1:21:24He hit it he just turned and
- 1:21:25started running toward the
- 1:21:26dugout and Reap and foul
- 1:21:28territory.
- 1:21:29Gloving it for the first time
- 1:21:30Strickland has retired all five
- 1:21:32men that he is saying Tony
- 1:21:34Canaleo lied to center and
- 1:21:36doubled off George Thomas's love
- 1:21:38that was in the fourth inning
- 1:21:39and he allowed McClellan scored
- 1:21:41on a base to go to single with
- 1:21:42Sandy Alomar and make clear with
- 1:21:4418 to base hits the lead the
- 1:21:46club.
- 1:21:50Let's enter Strickland into the
- 1:21:52wind up picks and the pitch in
- 1:21:53the dirt ball one talk about
- 1:21:58eccentricities and in Muscatine
- 1:22:01Iowa Richard Manning he has
- 1:22:04become a pearl button collector
- 1:22:07low to know he now owns one
- 1:22:10hundred forty four million pearl
- 1:22:13buttons and Matthew is going to
- 1:22:16pave his driveway with them
- 1:22:21obviously his mother frightened
- 1:22:22by a wizard of our story when he
- 1:22:24was going to be born.
- 1:22:28You're right at the bottom there
- 1:22:29Dick.
- 1:22:30I just a little girl done
- 1:22:32followed out of play.
- 1:22:33the guy that's doing one of the
- 1:22:34four holes in it though.
- 1:22:35So the deal I've been to Tony
- 1:22:42is all the way.
- 1:22:50He featured in a picture in AP
- 1:22:52Water photo and looks like
- 1:22:54Silas Monterey as he has hand
- 1:22:56full of pearl buttons and he's
- 1:22:58letting them just go through his
- 1:22:59fingertips and into a big bucket
- 1:23:01for a million.
- 1:23:02Look at this.
- 1:23:03Well look at this.
- 1:23:04Well buttons after button that
- 1:23:06the button he is related to
- 1:23:11work.
- 1:23:12Jack swing and account goes
- 1:23:14full for you and to get into
- 1:23:21my plate time three balls and
- 1:23:25two strikes to Tony can make
- 1:23:26Lear.
- 1:23:27When I don't on six many in the
- 1:23:29angels played five to one the
- 1:23:30pitch low and can make Lear a
- 1:23:32little more first base runner
- 1:23:34against Strickland French at
- 1:23:36Sid O'Brien OBE struck out and
- 1:23:38won with the all star games
- 1:23:41coming up.
- 1:23:42We just talked about the
- 1:23:43pitching selections made by
- 1:23:44early and we've better refresh
- 1:23:47the memories of many of our fans
- 1:23:48that the last time that the
- 1:23:49American League won an all star
- 1:23:50game was 1962 and that was at
- 1:23:54Wrigley Field in Chicago and
- 1:23:55that was part of our trivia
- 1:23:57question the pitchers involved
- 1:23:58in the winning pitcher being
- 1:24:00Ray Herbert was Dave Stenhouse
- 1:24:02Herbert Agarian Pappas outside
- 1:24:05the big O'Brien Herbert got to
- 1:24:07win.
- 1:24:08Herbert got to win and the
- 1:24:09National League starter in that
- 1:24:11thirty third game at Wrigley
- 1:24:12Field in Chicago 1962 former
- 1:24:16Dodger the pitch by Strickland
- 1:24:19Padres Danny Padres it was low
- 1:24:23to an oh and the happy with the
- 1:24:25loser 1962 thirty third game and
- 1:24:30this will be what the 40 this
- 1:24:33will be the 40 second game 40
- 1:24:35second all star game coming up
- 1:24:38things and actually got to give
- 1:24:39the American League a couple of
- 1:24:40runs with all the injuries low
- 1:24:42three and oh the Strickland after
- 1:24:45mowing down five straight angels
- 1:24:47walked an ugly arrow on a three
- 1:24:48two pitch and falls behind O'Brien
- 1:24:50three and oh now Murphy a light
- 1:24:52jacket waiting on deck here's
- 1:25:00the pitch I've all four and I'm
- 1:25:02for pictures O'Brien on the
- 1:25:05second can agree on and with one
- 1:25:07out Murphy has a chance to aid
- 1:25:10his own cause Murphy a single
- 1:25:12and two at bat his last outing
- 1:25:15against Vita Blue a couple of
- 1:25:16bases he has driven in six runs
- 1:25:18so he has helped himself.
- 1:25:23Sandy Alomar having another
- 1:25:25great series manager left he
- 1:25:28thought it might elect to give
- 1:25:31the sacrifice time to Murphy
- 1:25:34move the runners up the third
- 1:25:35and second and let Alomar take
- 1:25:37a crack at knocking my favorite
- 1:25:41Minnesota city represented again
- 1:25:43today new home you all have a
- 1:25:50new home here Tony C from second
- 1:25:55O'Brien from first the infield
- 1:25:56looking for the sacrifice and it
- 1:25:57is a bad foul.
- 1:25:59Middle wall picking it up about
- 1:26:0010 feet from the plate up the
- 1:26:01third base line.
- 1:26:05It all behind the plate Thomas
- 1:26:07in on the cut of the grass the
- 1:26:07third and Reese with runners the
- 1:26:09second and first playing in front
- 1:26:11of the runner.
- 1:26:13Cardenas covering short and
- 1:26:14Ron on his way to first base the
- 1:26:16outfield alley a checking the
- 1:26:18sun and left field he's fairly
- 1:26:19deep and straight away in the
- 1:26:20right center is Jim Holt and
- 1:26:22guarding the right field line
- 1:26:23he's our toolbar.
- 1:26:24So it's a big gap in right
- 1:26:25center and in left center.
- 1:26:28Strickland looks at second to
- 1:26:29pitch Murphy squares and misses
- 1:26:31on the bunch right now throw to
- 1:26:32second and scrambling back is
- 1:26:34Tony C.
- 1:26:35Cardenas applying the tag and
- 1:26:36Kanegli Arrow did not slide as
- 1:26:39he hit the bag had trouble
- 1:26:40stopping his momentum and it's
- 1:26:42what almost came off second base
- 1:26:44and Cardenas is right there to
- 1:26:46apply the tag just in case.
- 1:26:50Two strikes now on Murphy after
- 1:26:53failing to sacrifice the twin
- 1:26:56infield still looking for a
- 1:26:58possible bunch.
- 1:26:59Brennan said second and third
- 1:27:01here's the pitch on a ground
- 1:27:02ball to short could be to
- 1:27:03Cardenas goes to bond Ron on
- 1:27:05the first base.
- 1:27:11Murphy didn't think so nor did
- 1:27:13Fred Kanegli the first base
- 1:27:15coach at the inning comes to an
- 1:27:16end on a six four three double
- 1:27:18play no run no hit no errors the
- 1:27:20man left to the home half of a
- 1:27:22six angels five then it's on a
- 1:27:24one you know fans the heart of

- 1:28:28I don't know if they're planning
- 1:28:29at the Met the angels have a
- 1:28:30five to one lead as they go
- 1:28:31after their fourth straight win
- 1:28:33and they're sixth in a row here
- 1:28:35against the twins in their home
- 1:28:37yard.
- 1:28:38I wonder how many people
- 1:28:39remember who the starting
- 1:28:40pitchers were last year and they
- 1:28:42all started.
- 1:28:47Recent year.
- 1:28:47One of the young men named to the
- 1:28:49West by early today Jim Palmer
- 1:28:51started for the American League
- 1:28:53and Tom Seaver of the Mets.
- 1:28:57Who do you figure will start the
- 1:28:59national league this year.
- 1:28:59It's got to be by the blue and
- 1:29:01that's weaver once a male for the
- 1:29:03rest of the year.
- 1:29:05But that goes.
- 1:29:07You know the fact that Dr.
- 1:29:08Gallagher come out publicly and
- 1:29:09made the bias claim against
- 1:29:11Marky Anderson.
- 1:29:12That almost.
- 1:29:14Forces Anderson not to be
- 1:29:15started because I can see where a
- 1:29:18skipper would would not want to
- 1:29:19encourage that kind of public
- 1:29:20attack.
- 1:29:22One and one to count the read.
- 1:29:24But he's going to matter.
- 1:29:25My figure the other way.
- 1:29:26You know I might not want to
- 1:29:28reverse.
- 1:29:29Like certainly by record Ellis
- 1:29:31would deserve the honor.
- 1:29:34One one day.
- 1:29:35Her bounces in two and one.
- 1:29:37It's a shame that that he had to
- 1:29:38make that statement.
- 1:29:39Better than not say it.
- 1:29:40And then if he doesn't start
- 1:29:41then OK if he feels that there
- 1:29:43is a bias statement being he
- 1:29:45didn't figure he would be
- 1:29:46selected because he was black.
- 1:29:48And that Anderson didn't like
- 1:29:50him as a ground ball.
- 1:29:51Right.
- 1:29:56At their first hit and back on
- 1:29:59the second inning.
- 1:30:03Fourth hit allowed by Tom Murphy
- 1:30:04brings up George Sanplio
- 1:30:06Cardenas.
- 1:30:07I can't think of anyone.
- 1:30:08Marky Anderson doesn't like.
- 1:30:09And the idea that two blacks
- 1:30:10wouldn't start an all-star game.
- 1:30:12I.
- 1:30:13Don't think.
- 1:30:15That wouldn't even have been in
- 1:30:16my mind.
- 1:30:17Maybe it does matter.
- 1:30:18Tom.
- 1:30:25Murphy delivers inside corner
- 1:30:27first right.
- 1:30:29Leo Cardenas.
- 1:30:30Drove him a twin front in the
- 1:30:32first inning.
- 1:30:34He's.
- 1:30:35He's.
- 1:30:35He's.
- 1:30:35He's.
- 1:30:35He's.
- 1:30:35He's.
- 1:30:35He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:36He's.
- 1:30:39Drove him a twin front in the
- 1:30:40first inning after Braun singled
- 1:30:42and so far single they move.
- 1:30:44Run along to third on a ground
- 1:30:46out and Cardenas sent him home
- 1:30:47on a line drive sacrifice fly to
- 1:30:49right field.
- 1:30:49He is forty fourth RBI this year
- 1:30:51and you're playing behind.
- 1:30:53He goes to pitch his line.
- 1:30:54Oh my god.
- 1:30:55Three.
- 1:30:57About three feet.
- 1:31:01the race is going to take the
- 1:31:02base.
- 1:31:03As the angels were not holding
- 1:31:05the line drive and that been in
- 1:31:07third territory it would have
- 1:31:08been a double play because
- 1:31:09Spencer position right near the
- 1:31:10line.
- 1:31:12These are the days to do
- 1:31:13something different in Busch
- 1:31:14Gardens is the place to do it.
- 1:31:15Float a boat down tropical
- 1:31:17streams ride a thrilling sky
- 1:31:18high monorail sea jumble flowers
- 1:31:20rare animals waterfalls and a
- 1:31:22train bird show even penguins
- 1:31:24Busch Gardens in Van Nuys open
- 1:31:26every day 10 in the morning to
- 1:31:27four in the afternoon.
- 1:31:29Her Josh Smith outside one and
- 1:31:32two.
- 1:31:32Busch Gardens just off the San
- 1:31:34Diego freeway and a great spot
- 1:31:37for the entire family.
- 1:31:42A five one lead angels on top
- 1:31:46race at first base and the one
- 1:31:48two bet Cardenas takes it inside
- 1:31:50he almost walked into the
- 1:31:51fastball.
- 1:31:52John Stevenson behind the plate
- 1:31:53O'Brien Alomar looking for a
- 1:31:55double play chances there
- 1:31:56squeeze toward second.
- 1:31:58McMullen deep and off the line
- 1:31:59at third Spencer playing behind
- 1:32:01the runner at first base and the
- 1:32:02outfield aligned toward right for
- 1:32:05the right handed hitting
- 1:32:06Cardenas.
- 1:32:12If he has his time the two to
- 1:32:13pick on a fly ball to right
- 1:32:15center it's hit well and a long
- 1:32:17run for Revers he's at the
- 1:32:18warning track and makes the
- 1:32:20catch it's going to clear out
- 1:32:21down in front of him.
- 1:32:23Both men in position to make the
- 1:32:24play and Revers halfway onto the
- 1:32:26track in front of the bullpen
- 1:32:28made the graph.
- 1:32:32One out here said if you're
- 1:32:33Jim Hold he has struck out and
- 1:32:35ground hard back to the mound
- 1:32:36hope for two white dots got a
- 1:32:41run and it's now Oakland for
- 1:32:43Chicago to after six innings.
- 1:32:49Oh let's end it hitter Spencer
- 1:32:53continues to play behind Reed
- 1:32:55and Revers outfield playing hold
- 1:32:59at the dead pole hitter that's
- 1:33:00well outside Minnesota took the
- 1:33:05one nothing lead on the singles
- 1:33:06by Braun and Sobar and the
- 1:33:07sacrifice fly from Cardenas and
- 1:33:10the angels tied it in a second
- 1:33:12on an unearned run off starter
- 1:33:13Steve Lugar pitches lined O'Brien
- 1:33:16can't get it a leaping tie goes
- 1:33:17out to left fielder Gonzalez and
- 1:33:19Rachel has to stop at second
- 1:33:21base.
- 1:33:21So Brian nearly came up with a
- 1:33:24spectacular catch a slicing line
- 1:33:26drive and said had to go to his
- 1:33:28backhand side leaping in the air
- 1:33:30and the ball just skimmed over
- 1:33:31the leather.
- 1:33:32Not that Tony Gonzalez riders to
- 1:33:35second and first with one out
- 1:33:38and he is brand Alia.
- 1:33:39He's been out on two ground balls
- 1:33:41and Minnesota finds itself in a
- 1:33:43position where one swing would
- 1:33:44bring him right back into the
- 1:33:45ballgame and Alia has the power
- 1:33:47to get the ball.
- 1:33:52Race at second hold at first and
- 1:33:54feel playing back and the
- 1:33:56outfield deep with respect to
- 1:33:58Alia's power.
- 1:34:00the pitch curve strike outside
- 1:34:03burner angels Mel Queen begins to
- 1:34:06throw in the second inning an
- 1:34:08error when John Stevenson's high
- 1:34:10pop fly in the center of the
- 1:34:11diamond drop between Thomas and
- 1:34:13Reese Thomas charged with an
- 1:34:15error although the ball was not
- 1:34:16in the center of the diamond
- 1:34:17Stevenson came around a single by
- 1:34:18McMullen and a ground out by
- 1:34:20Spencer curve grounded for third
- 1:34:22McMullen one hand play to his
- 1:34:23left out the second for one on
- 1:34:25the first double play and Alia
- 1:34:28takes his helmet off and lands it
- 1:34:30in the dirt.
- 1:34:31McMullen ranging far to his left
- 1:34:33to one hand the ball and the
- 1:34:34webbing of his glove and then it
- 1:34:36was five four and three for the
- 1:34:37double play to win the Minnesota
- 1:34:39six inning no runs two hits no
- 1:34:42errors the man left and after
- 1:34:43that goal by the two match the
- 1:34:48When you say, when you say, when you say, when you say but,
- 1:34:58You said a lot of things nobody else can say.
- 1:35:03When you say but, you say you want the beer that's got a taste that's number one.
- 1:35:11When you say but, you say the words that mean you like to do it all.
- 1:35:18When you say but, it means you care enough to only want the king of beer.
- 1:35:26There is no other one, there's only some king left,
- 1:35:31Because the king of beer is leading all the rest.
- 1:35:36When you say but, you say it all.
- 1:36:06One, the Angels in Prada, and here again it's on.
- 1:36:08Alright, Dix, Sandy Alomar, one for three this afternoon,
- 1:36:10Facing the left-hander, Jim Strickland, for the first time.
- 1:36:13Alomar with his base hit the drive-in two in the fourth inning,
- 1:36:16And right after that the starter, Luber, was gone, and Strickland replaced him,
- 1:36:19And then he struck out Mickey Rivers.
- 1:36:21the pitch, Sandy throws the bat at this one, and pops it up on the first base side,
- 1:36:24Reaps back on the outfield grass by a couple of steps, and the first baseman takes care of it.
- 1:36:28So Sandy released the bat in pursuit of the pitch, and hits the soft pop-up.
- 1:36:33One down, here's Mickey Rivers.
- 1:36:37We have another card from Dick Nelson's mother.
- 1:36:41Dick, can you put this under the windshield wiper of some friend's automobile sometime,
- 1:36:47When you have a little parking problem.
- 1:36:50Here's the line, and I picked it on the way to Rivers.
- 1:36:52Curve, long close, all one.
- 1:36:54It says in Bull Friends, thanks for taking two parking spaces.
- 1:36:58And down below in finer print, it said I had to park two blocks away,
- 1:37:01You stupid inconsiderate moron.
- 1:37:04You set this in your wallet.
- 1:37:06Mickey grabs it up the first base side,
- 1:37:08Spiders off the glove of Rees, but Rees retrieves and goes to the bag and makes the play.
- 1:37:12So Mickey Rivers, smashing it hard up the first base side,
- 1:37:16But Rees takes care of it, there are two down,
- 1:37:18And the batter will be left fielder Tony Gonzalez.
- 1:37:20Angels lead 5-1, seventh inning of play.
- 1:37:23Angels, five runs, six hits.
- 1:37:25Tony Gonzalez with a two run homer into the bleachers in right field.
- 1:37:35In the third, he's one for three, the pitch, Tony takes the curve by, ball one.
- 1:37:47And fly in groups on this day with so many private aircraft landing nearby,
- 1:37:52And these fans here at the ballpark this afternoon to watch the twins in action.
- 1:37:56the 1-0 delivery and it's a fastball low on the count of two and 0.
- 1:37:59A group from Baldwin and a group from Shell Lake and from Galesville, Wisconsin.
- 1:38:13Tony Gonzalez whips the batter out a couple of times,
- 1:38:16the left-hander Jim Strickland gets it ready.
- 1:38:19Here's the 2-0 pitch to Tony G, curved him high and close ball play for you know,
- 1:38:24Tony's spinning his way out of the batter's box.
- 1:38:28As for the American League, they have not been victorious in all-star competition since 1962.
- 1:38:35Big game coming up in Detroit, fastball to Gonzalez for a strike to make it 3-1.
- 1:38:40the American League won that game in 1962 in Chicago, 9-4 over the Nationals.
- 1:38:46the National League came right back to win the next 5-3.
- 1:38:49Tony Gonzalez getting a piece of this as he spun away from the play and got a piece of it.
- 1:38:54And the count now 3-2.
- 1:38:58And from that 34th game on in 1963, it has been National League dominance, 3-2 pitch.
- 1:39:04Inside, almost hit him in the hand.
- 1:39:06Gonzalez falling away from the pitch and dropping the bat there in the batter's box.
- 1:39:10So a walk given up to Gonzalez.
- 1:39:12And the batter will be another left-hander, John Stevenson.
- 1:39:15the 35th game in 1964 played in New York.
- 1:39:19the National League won it 7-4.
- 1:39:21Here in the Twin Cities, the 36th game was played.
- 1:39:24National League won it 6-5.
- 1:39:25the 37th game played in St. Louis.
- 1:39:27National League won it 2-1.
- 1:39:3038th game.
- 1:39:32And that's our game of the big day with the National League winning it 2-1.
- 1:39:3839th game at Houston.
- 1:39:40National won it 1-0.
- 1:39:44Go over the first base, Gonzalez back.
- 1:39:4640th game was played at Kennedy Stadium in Washington.
- 1:39:48the National League ran away with it 9-3.
- 1:39:51And last year, the National League winning it 5-4.
- 1:39:54the game played at Cincinnati.
- 1:39:56the pitch, Stevenson checks, takes the letter high curve for a strike.
- 1:39:59And it's on one.
- 1:40:02Oakland with a 4-2 lead over the White Sox at the end of five.
- 1:40:06Thompson against Wood.
- 1:40:08Houston at San Francisco getting started.
- 1:40:10That will be Wilson against Cumberland.
- 1:40:13Another game tonight.
- 1:40:15the pitch, curve, half foul.
- 1:40:17They're all played strike two.
- 1:40:19Tonight at the National League, Cincinnati will be at Pittsburgh, Montreal, and Philadelphia.
- 1:40:22And the Cubs will be entertained by the Dodgers.
- 1:40:25Kansas City plays tonight at Milwaukee.
- 1:40:27the Yankees are at Detroit, Boston at Cleveland, Washington at Baltimore.
- 1:40:31Here's the count on Little John and the pitch to Stevenson.
- 1:40:34Pitch out called for by Minterwald and no movement by Gonzalez.
- 1:40:37the count stays at one and two.
- 1:40:39Now at one and two.
- 1:40:41Check on the stairs.
- 1:40:43In for the sign has it.
- 1:40:48the Yankees are at the
- 1:40:50the Yankees are at the
- 1:40:52the Yankees are at the
- 1:40:54the Yankees are at the
- 1:40:56the Yankees are at the
- 1:40:58the Yankees are at the
- 1:41:00In the end has it.
- 1:41:02Rage, the runner and the pitch.
- 1:41:03Off feed curve, round ball on the likes of Reed.
- 1:41:06Picked up by Braun, and the ball to the pitcher off the glove.
- 1:41:08Braun to suck it.
- 1:41:09On to suck it goes Gonzalez and out to third.
- 1:41:12the throw there not in time.
- 1:41:15So Braun was able to back up the play as Reed was unable to flag it down.
- 1:41:18And Steve, coming up with the ball at the edge of the outfield grass,
- 1:41:21He may have blown it to the pitcher's back when covering, but it went off his glove.
- 1:41:25as the Angels have runners at first and third.
- 1:41:27It's going to be an error for the pitcher, Jim Strickland, and we're going to pause right
- 1:41:36here for station identification.
- 1:41:37This is the Angels radio network.
- 1:41:39At exactly one minute before the hour of one o'clock, this is KMND, your Angels baseball
- 1:41:45station in the Valley of the Sun in Mesa, Arizona.
- 1:41:48Big 15-10 on your dial.
- 1:41:50Now back to Angels baseball.
- 1:41:52Ron is at first and third.
- 1:41:55McMullough the batter, curve, pounded foul off the head of the bat.
- 1:41:59Max spinning it up the line at the first base side, strike one.
- 1:42:02So it is an error for Jim Strickland as he was unable to handle the throw made by Steve
- 1:42:07Ron.
- 1:42:08Ron's toss was right on target at first base.
- 1:42:10They should have had Stevenson, but instead of getting Stevenson, Gonzalez travels to
- 1:42:15third.
- 1:42:16Stevenson at first base.
- 1:42:17Second error for the twin.
- 1:42:18Strickland trying to work his way out of difficulty.
- 1:42:21the one strike best.
- 1:42:22Ron ball, left side, base hit.
- 1:42:23Gonzalez scores on the second go, Stevenson.
- 1:42:24So Ken McMullough getting it just out of the reach of George Thomas at third.
- 1:42:25Angels now laid by 5-6 to 1.
- 1:42:26Jim sent to the batter on the second base, Stevenson.
- 1:42:27Ken McMullough way before here this afternoon.
- 1:42:28Oh, Mac has had some sort of serious.
- 1:42:29With an opening game when he pounded the ball from the front of the third, McMullough keeps
- 1:42:58it going here.
- 1:42:59Now seven for ten in the series.
- 1:43:00Seven for ten.
- 1:43:01That's a fastball close ball on.
- 1:43:02And five RBIs from the McConnell into the series too.
- 1:43:03Dick you'd have to say that Ken is the logical candidate for the player of the month award.
- 1:43:10Great the way he's going.
- 1:43:15He could be the July bond angel player of the month.
- 1:43:29That ball fast and short, Coginus picks it up and he goes to Steve Brown almost tore his
- 1:43:48head off with a throw.
- 1:43:57Don't you think it player could be the monster of the month.
- 1:44:23of meeting those wonderful people you used to know and seeing that wonderful
- 1:44:27place where you grew up. Continental special fairs make it possible to revisit dozens of
- 1:44:32hometowns and one of them is probably yours. Protect with your
- 1:44:35travel agent, Continental partner in getting things done for you and then come
- 1:44:39home this summer with Continental Airlines the proud bird with a golden tail.
- 1:45:01Well you heard the announcement, I don't know if you were able to pick it up in the
- 1:45:04background but there may be an announcement concerning the great number of
- 1:45:08watch youngsters here at Metro Falmouth Stadium and with the various group leaders responsible for these
- 1:45:13youngsters and they have asked the group leaders to report to the police office here on the
- 1:45:19stadium so that these youngsters can find their way home again and they're traveling all over the
- 1:45:26place out of the lower deck and left field, wandering all over the premises and
- 1:45:31many of them managing to get lost here at Metro Falmouth Stadium. George
- 1:45:35Middowell leads it off the curve by Murphy as close ball was. They have a lot of school
- 1:45:38patrol youngsters out here this afternoon.
- 1:45:44Murphy right back with it. Right down the shoot for a strike and it's 1-1. They have a
- 1:45:47group, a school patrol group from Lake City, from New London and from Spicer,
- 1:45:51Minnesota.
- 1:45:55Tom Murphy in possession of a 6-1 lead, last of the seventh and the pitch.
- 1:45:59Wicked curve but it stays inside, ball 2-2-1. Big break to it.
- 1:46:04Started in as though it was going to be behind the batter, the right-handed George
- 1:46:07Middowell and then it tried to angle its way over the plate and missed. Here's a 2-1 pitch.
- 1:46:11On non-fly ball left field. Back for it goes Tony Gonzales. Back toward the edge of the
- 1:46:16track. Tony has room and he makes the catch.
- 1:46:20Dan Williams going in the Minnesota bullpen. Here's George Thomas.
- 1:46:28Without Tony Alaba, without Harmon Killebue, this is an entirely different
- 1:46:31team. They say that they have two young men in the Minnesota 5 system right now
- 1:46:38who are the Killebue's of the future. Well that of course remains to be seen.
- 1:46:43They have high hopes for them and they say that they should have most Thomas in
- 1:46:49career. First delivery and first strike and it's on one of the comments. George
- 1:46:53over 2. Outside with it 1-1.
- 1:47:04Well without them in the lineup it's a far easier pitching pass. Curve, line drive
- 1:47:09basic by George. Left field by George. He's so deadly and sharply.
- 1:47:15And that is the sixth Minnesota hit. That'll bring up the pitcher.
- 1:47:24Jim Cotts will be used in a pinch hitting role by manager Bill Riggins.
- 1:47:31the pitcher Jim Cotts left-handed batter will face the right-handed Tom Murphy.
- 1:47:37Jim Hughes for this purpose on a number of occasions.
- 1:47:42And the pitch. Tried to bunt on it and missed. Strike one.
- 1:47:46And Cotts here trying to bunt for a base hit. Just trying to catch McMullen deep at
- 1:47:50third.
- 1:47:59Bill Riggins with that limited mass.
- 1:48:02That's all close. 1-1.
- 1:48:06And of course without the services today another left-handed hitter, Rob Carew.
- 1:48:10Along with Tony Alita.
- 1:48:151-1 the count on Cotts. Angel's lead, 6-1. Last out of the seventh inning.
- 1:48:19Trying to sweep the best of it.
- 1:48:21Chuck Flanagan. Good call to judge.
- 1:48:25And the Angel both had Mel Queen and Dave Laroche are throwing.
- 1:48:38As Chuck Flan double shot here by Jim Cotts.
- 1:48:42Result in the seventh Minnesota hit. Runners of first and second went out.
- 1:48:46the batter will be Steve Braun.
- 1:48:58the Angels counting up for the double play on the sixth inning.
- 1:49:01They might be able to duplicate that right here.
- 1:49:04Left-handed Steve Braun.
- 1:49:06And the fetch to him and Braun takes the off-speed turn for a strike and a throw and one.
- 1:49:22Murphy giving more runs. Almost as many runs as he has seen all season long.
- 1:49:27In winning four and losing eleven.
- 1:49:30One strike fetch, off-speed turn, strike two call.
- 1:49:33Murphy has two of them in there.
- 1:49:36Run to the base there and runs toward the first inning.
- 1:49:40the only Minnesota run so far.
- 1:49:41Walks in the third.
- 1:49:42Runs it out of the fifth inning.
- 1:49:43Runs it out to Sandy Elomar.
- 1:49:44That's the spot where Murphy, unless he could get him on strikes, would like to have him right now.
- 1:49:49the fetch. Fastball low and close.
- 1:49:511-2.
- 1:49:53All runs, strike two.
- 1:50:03the upfields filled it way around to the right here for Braun.
- 1:50:10Straight away stands for the left-hander and the 1-2 fetch. Inside with another fastball.
- 1:50:31Strike two on Braun.
- 1:50:34Murphy plays for the fetch.
- 1:50:35There it is.
- 1:50:59Murphy with breaking stuff had registered two strikes on Braun and then teased him with fastballs.
- 1:51:06Two inside and then one that he got up and out over the plate and Steve Braun hammered it to right field for a line drive base hit.
- 1:51:13Here's Steve R. Kovar.
- 1:51:14It is now 62. Last out of the seventh inning. One out.
- 1:51:19Kovar.
- 1:51:23He's got to look out for the percentage here. Kovar with an infield hit in the first inning and tight in the third and again in the fifth.
- 1:51:29He has shot line drives to Kamen Mullen for us.
- 1:51:34So he has read Murphy extremely well.
- 1:51:37Runners at first and second. One out.
- 1:51:40Angels late. Six-two.
- 1:51:42Minnesota now with eight hits. Murphy ready on the fetch.
- 1:51:44Kovar backs off. Takes ball one.
- 1:51:56So Tom Murphy.
- 1:51:59Wheeling and dealing here in kind of a shaky way. the one up that's down the middle.
- 1:52:15Not again.
- 1:52:30In support of Tom Murphy. Kovar who has crunched it well in the third and the fifth and now the seventh. But nothing to show for those plate appearances.
- 1:52:45That will be offered to Tom Murphy and the affairs of Dave LaRoche.
- 1:53:00So Tom Murphy comes out. They hit time hard here in the seventh inning. And line drive out off the bat of Kovar.
- 1:53:15A big out of the seventh inning. Minnesota now has two. They still have runners at first and second and it's a six-two-two ball game with Murphy out in front by four as he leaves the game.
- 1:53:26So now Dave LaRoche being summoned from the ball pen to China and preserve it.
- 1:53:31So for you fans of the Riverside, San Bernardino, Pomona and San Fernando Valley areas, you may take advantage of a special angel ticket offer to the game Sunday, July 18th against Cleveland.
- 1:53:40For information, see the court pages of the Riverside Press Enterprise, San Bernardino, San Telegram, Pomona, Fogler, and the Van Nuys.
- 1:53:49A bit earlier we were talking about tips and the cards that you'd like to see employed and I had to agree with you.
- 1:53:58On our travels we deal with people in hotel business, restaurants, cab drivers, people who perform so many services.
- 1:54:06I hope that Sam Searle is in with me because I think it would be kind of a treat to have a job where tips were allowed.
- 1:54:18I think I'd make a fortune.
- 1:54:20A smile is the cheapest commodity of all and how infrequently it is employed by people in that form of a funnel.
- 1:54:31the thing that bothers me most of all is when someone is serving you and you get the feeling and attitude before, oh, you even given your order.
- 1:54:44If they're already counting on you to pay them money for service, it already is bad.
- 1:54:50And I think just in terms of the better interest of a restaurant that even the owner might be willing to print up cards like that.
- 1:54:59Noise, noise and more noise means Simon Killibrew has come out of the dugout, sword, bow and all.
- 1:55:05I had a unique experience as a young man. I worked at a resort. It was past our hot springs up in central California.
- 1:55:13And I was kind of a cook and bottle washer and performed all these various services.
- 1:55:19And I can remember how from a tip standpoint, the people who came and all you had to do was render kindness and I tell you the magic of a smile is something.
- 1:55:30Well, Simon Killibrew has started to pry this place apart already with just a beautiful reaction in the background.
- 1:55:37As the answers is probably many of them who are out here at the beginning of this series the other night when it was Simon Killibrew night and it was Mug Night when they gave away the thermal mud.
- 1:55:50the Simon Killibrews home run accomplishments instead of in the mud and I did not appear. He did not appear out here last night in action.
- 1:55:58But now given a shot at it here by manager Bill Rigney, bad show and all. So Killibrew will face Dave Laroche down the pit.
- 1:56:07He's faced by Spencer coming over and Jim can't quite get to it.
- 1:56:35Spencer limping a bit as he goes back to his spot at first base. He might have spiked himself or kicked himself in the foot as he went over to the railing for that high foul pop.
- 1:56:45And any of that Killibrew still has life at home plate one strike on him two down and run as a first and second angel played six to that's all the way and the count is one to one.
- 1:57:00Dave Laroche winner of four loser of one he has saved seven. Earned run average one point nine seconds and he has a mean man to deal with here and Simon Killibrew one one delivery now.
- 1:57:12Killibrew fouls it back one and two.
- 1:57:16Simon in the pregame show with that last night has indicated that he was ready to go. He was ready to be on the starting line of Bill Rigney deciding against it. However, he wanted to get as much rest as possible so that there wouldn't be any continued aggravation.
- 1:57:31But Killibrew implied in a pinch hitting role here on the seventh inning the pitch inside with a curve.
- 1:57:49All to strike two on the hammer. the after you'll needless to say extremely deep right away and the two two pitch on the way and kill the bird.
- 1:58:02Who wants it. Tony Gonzalez is there and Tony puts it away to retire the.
- 1:58:08Well, I got under it. It was one of those typical Ruthian or kill a bird type. It extremely high but with nothing in the way of this.
- 1:58:20No error as a parallel and the start out the end of seven angels six minutes on a two small car expert you're on the air. I've been waiting for an hour to talk to you and I'm calling small car expert.
- 1:58:31Go ahead but don't be nasty. I've been listening to your show for weeks now and you say there's a perfect Datsun for everybody. Yeah, what's your point, sir? I've got other calls. What about perfect economy?
- 1:58:39the Datsun 1200 two door sedan. It's a little something. What about perfect styling? You can't beat the something special the Datsun two door coupe. You can beat it but you'd probably get up the hood. You get it? Small car expert.
- 1:58:50I was listening to that last guy you know about a whole line of perfect Datsun. What about perfect convenience? the Datsun five door station wagon. It's a kick to drive. Perfect performance.
- 1:58:58I'd have to say the Datsun 240Z. How about selling GT around? How about perfect comfort? the Datsun five tens. the two and four door sedans. Sounds like a perfect line all right. Wait, you didn't ask about the Datsun pickup truck. I don't care about the Datsun pickup truck.
- 1:59:10To help you pick your favorite Datsun, see the small car expert, your nearby Southern California Datsun dealer. Drive a Datsun, then decide.
- 1:59:32From Metropolitan Stadium in the Flint City, this is John Wells with Dick Henberg and Dick Nelson. And we have a change now with Stan Williams coming out of the bullpen for Minnesota. And Harmon Kilibrew will be at first base now taking over for Rich Reese.
- 1:59:45And the story reads this way. Angel six runs, seven hits one air. And Minnesota two runs, eight hits and two errors.
- 1:59:55That'll be a thinning play coming up. Stan Williams works his warm up tosses. And we have to now find a kill.
- 2:00:17There we go. He's setting a pipe. He's been busy. He's been writing that a lot. Making a lot of notes over here for a while. Here's Dick. What have you come up with over there?
- 2:00:26Well one thing that is somewhat interesting that the Minnesota Twins, when they lost last night, their record is 39 and 44 going into this game. That is the lowest they have been in terms of one loss per penny since their very first year when they moved from Washington here to Minnesota.
- 2:00:45And the days are dark here in the Flint City especially with the injuries to the key personnel.
- 2:00:50We had a letter from our friend, from Dean Borden, the manager of the Twins Killing Department. I think he's paid off for it too.
- 2:00:58And he just with a reminder about your date with destiny coming up Thursday evening, July 15th at Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:01:04Date with destiny?
- 2:01:05When you will get your pole picker and your field bosses will report and you'll get your root rot preventative and your tenchometer and your snake bite kit and all the paraphernalia you will need to become a successful avocado rancher.
- 2:01:16And you're also going to be presented with your own genuine avocado grove so you can qualify for Colavo membership. Fifty trees is minimum. That's going to be on Thursday evening, July 15th.
- 2:01:25First pitch by Williams to Kanigli Ero is a drive to center and Holt's lip ball gets up and makes the catch.
- 2:01:32Ball is hit right at him and that was fortunate because Holt lost his footing on that turf which must be still just a bit soggy and Kanigli Ero has retired.
- 2:01:42He's really going to go through with that.
- 2:01:43And just one final note, you can bet your guacamole that a lot of fans are going to be out to see you accept all these things on Thursday evening, July 15th.
- 2:01:51There's a Colavo group coming out to Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:01:53There's several hundred of the Colavo growers going to be there. That's the game with the Baltimore Orioles right after the All-Star break.
- 2:01:58O'Brien may hitter swings and bounces it up the middle to his right as Ronny skitters makes the top throw to Killebrew in time.
- 2:02:05Good play.
- 2:02:08Oh, that guacamole is great. I've been an avocado and an artist book fan all my life.
- 2:02:14My favorite foods and you can't get good avocados here in Minneapolis, at least at the Raddison Hotel.
- 2:02:22So pass that information along to our group out there on the West Coast.
- 2:02:26I don't know what they do with those things. Where do they hide the good ones?
- 2:02:31I guess they keep them right there for us.
- 2:02:35Dave LaRose hitting for the first time against Dan Williams, knowing on two out days in a high with a fastball as Williams.
- 2:02:41You know, Continental Airlines has a number of low cost holidays, including exciting visits to Hawaii's fabulous Outer Island.

- 2:04:16In the bottom of the eighth inning, Leo Cardenas, Jim Holt, and Brandt Elliott are facefully pictured Dave LaRoche.
- 2:04:25LaRoche trying to save Tom Murphy's fifth win of the year. Dave has seven saves and leads the club.
- 2:04:31In that department, one more than Lloyd Allen. LaRoche himself is four and one with an ERA of 1.96.
- 2:04:39Dave has just allowed nine earned runs all year.
- 2:04:44Cardenas, an RBI and a sacrifice fly, is grounded out and fly deep to center.
- 2:04:49the pitch by the left hander is inside, ball one.
- 2:04:53It's that...quite a downy brook in Detroit last night in that extra inning game. the Tigers tying the Yankees 3-3 in an extra inning.
- 2:05:02So the bases loaded. Billy Martin felt that Norm Cash was hit with a pitch that should have won the game in the tenth.
- 2:05:08But umpire Art France said no, the ball did not hit Cash. A strike to Cardenas one and one.
- 2:05:14And Billy Martin quoted in the Minneapolis afternoon papers, they send ball players down to the minors.
- 2:05:21Why can't they send umpires? That was incompetence out there. That's what it was.
- 2:05:25That will cost Billy Martin a few shekels.
- 2:05:28the one-one pitch swung on and fouled off the mask of Cantor John Stevenson.
- 2:05:35Martin claims that the ball hit Cash on the little finger.
- 2:05:39He said you could hear the noise in the dugout, but France, the umpire, couldn't hear it.
- 2:05:43He wouldn't even look at his hand to see it quiver. Norm Cash said his hand was quivering.
- 2:05:47As only Norm Cash can make his hand quiver.
- 2:05:51the pitch swung on a fly to deep left field. That goes to Gonzalez and Cardenas will touch them all.
- 2:05:57Number eleven for Leo Cardenas. That makes it six to three, angels. Ball hit well back into the left field, lower deck.
- 2:06:19Cardenas with a couple of RBI's now has 45 for the year.
- 2:06:25Measured at 393 feet.
- 2:06:29They hitter is Jim Holt.
- 2:06:32Two unearned runs. the angels first run was unearned off starter Steve Luber.
- 2:06:37And they got an unearned run when Jim Strickland dropped a throw in the seventh inning.
- 2:06:42And those two runs proving very important.
- 2:06:46An announcement now being made by the public address announcer.
- 2:06:50All the youngsters out in left field are littering the outfield with paper and refuse.
- 2:06:59the PA asking that the youngsters not do that.
- 2:07:03Many of them are standing right in the first row and leaning out over that overhang.
- 2:07:09Here's Jim Holt. Boyd Allen begins to throw in the angel bullpen. Holt looks at a fastball for a strike.
- 2:07:17Laroche came in to get harm and Killebrew. That proved to be a very big out.
- 2:07:20Had Killebrew gotten on, there's Cardenas with a home run.
- 2:07:23the angels would have been looking at a new ball game.
- 2:07:25It's six to three California.
- 2:07:27Hung on and missed as Holt chased a bad ball.
- 2:07:30Randallier is on deck. No and out, bottom of the eighth.
- 2:07:33the twins with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:07:35And now the leadoff home run by Cardenas in the eighth inning.
- 2:07:43Holt swings and lobs one at O'Brien. On the outfield grass makes the catch.
- 2:07:50It's a little soft pop fly that O'Brien he started in for and then had to go back about ten feet on the grass to make the catch.
- 2:07:57Holt has won for four today. Here's Randallier.
- 2:08:00He's been out on three ground balls. One of them a double play.
- 2:08:05So Billy Martin most unhappy.
- 2:08:07He feels that his Tigers could have won it four to three in the tenth inning.
- 2:08:11the Yankees got two in the eleventh inning to win that ball game five to three.
- 2:08:14And Martin with an open blast against umpire Art France.
- 2:08:18the pitch low in the dirt.
- 2:08:32With a big loss the Tigers now seven games behind Baltimore.
- 2:08:35the one all pitch. Alier swings and can't find the fastball.
- 2:08:39Going into play tonight the Orioles have a three game lead over the Red Sox and are seven in front of Detroit with the Yankees 14 back.
- 2:08:46They look like Low Rogers. I have never met an umpire I didn't like.
- 2:08:49But I agree with Martin's statement.
- 2:08:51One one pitch is hung on a high fly ball to center.
- 2:08:54Fairly deep and Rivers is playing out there. Now he has to come in for it and makes the catch.
- 2:08:59You agree that umpires should be sent back to the minor list.
- 2:09:03I feel like you have a lot on the job.
- 2:09:11Quite often leads to some sort of complacency and the fact that you suddenly find yourself out of position.
- 2:09:22On various occasions.
- 2:09:24the hitters George Winterwald threw out no one on the pitch.
- 2:09:33Swung on and grounded foul. Back to third base coach Frank Crisetti.
- 2:09:36Dave Laroche trying to send down a win for Tom Murphy.
- 2:09:40A six to three angel lead although the Minnesotans have out hit the angels nine seven.
- 2:09:45George Thomas on deck.
- 2:09:48And Laroche deals one on line drive fouls he hooked it on one hop against the fence in front of the open bleachers.
- 2:09:55That run along the left field foul line.
- 2:10:00Two strikes to Minterwald he has a single.
- 2:10:03In three at bat.
- 2:10:07Twenty three year old Southfall Laroche kicks and deals high.
- 2:10:11That's one.
- 2:10:14the field deep toward left.
- 2:10:18the gap between the center fielder Rivers and right fielder Tony C.
- 2:10:26Stevenson down with a time.
- 2:10:28Now the target low on outside the bit right there on a ground ball swept the third foul.
- 2:10:33Crisetti handles it and goes right back to the mound with a ball.
- 2:10:36As he fires to Laroche.
- 2:10:40the pitch made by Dave he started the curve outside and brought it in over the outside corner and Minterwald trying to pull the ball hit it weakly but foul.
- 2:10:49the line the pitch curve fouled off the glove of John Stevenson.
