- 0:07Speaker 1: Music's Lost History Name the song before we do Back, back,
- 0:16Speaker 1: back Music's Lost History.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Hey, welcome back to Music's Lost History, the Artist's Edition.
- 0:25Speaker 2: One of the most unusual, fascinating British bands hailing from
- 0:28Speaker 2: the music generation's second British invasion. Oh yeah, the 1980s.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Now most people think that they know this band. They're
- 0:36Speaker 2: known globally for one song, but there's more to this
- 0:39Speaker 2: story as we get deeper into the complication. They joined
- 0:43Speaker 2: forces in Birmingham, England. It was two Kevins, both on guitar.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Kevin No. 1 comes from the British punk rock scene,
- 0:51Speaker 2: but here's the thing. He wasn't interested in playing punk
- 0:53Speaker 2: music in this brand new collaboration with the other Kevin.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Their biggest inspiration was Northern and American soul music with
- 1:01Speaker 2: a touch of Irish heritage. The band's very first name
- 1:04Speaker 2: was Dexedrine. Yeah, I'm talking about the amphetamine, which was
- 1:08Speaker 2: associated with the Northern Soul scene. Ironically, the band had
- 1:12Speaker 2: one big rule. No drugs, no alcohol, no excuses. Kevin,
- 1:18Speaker 2: as in Roland, was a hardcore man about rehearsals, stretching
- 1:23Speaker 2: late into the night. I mean, the music and the clothes,
- 1:26Speaker 2: the entire image had to be 100% distinctive. Coming up next,
- 1:47Speaker 2: this band finally releases their debut album, but it comes
- 1:51Speaker 2: with a lot of problems. And there's a horn section
- 1:55Speaker 2: in punk music? What?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Name the artist before we tell you. Music's lost history.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Arrow Collins is back.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Hey, thanks for coming back to Music's Lost History, the
- 2:15Speaker 2: Artist Edition, the year 1980. The band finally releases their
- 2:19Speaker 2: debut album, but it's got a lot of inner battles,
- 2:23Speaker 2: complete with a horn section connected to soul music and
- 2:27Speaker 2: punk music? Yeah, the band was on their way, right?
- 2:31Speaker 1: Yeah, no.
- 2:32Speaker 2: No, they weren't. They broke up already. In fact, any
- 2:36Speaker 2: and every shape of this band has always broken up.
- 2:39Speaker 2: But it's not Fleetwood Mac. Two years later, album number
- 2:43Speaker 2: two hit the charts. Gone was the urban soul look.
- 2:47Speaker 2: In were fiddles, accordions, and denim scarves and plenty of
- 2:52Speaker 2: rural clothing. Oh my God, where are we going with this?
- 2:55Speaker 2: From that album came the band's very first No. 1
- 2:58Speaker 2: song in Britain as well as America. Although Kevin No. 1, Roland,
- 3:03Speaker 2: gets credit for writing the song, uh-uh. It was the
- 3:07Speaker 2: ousted Kevin's real work, and oh, it did not sit
- 3:10Speaker 2: well with Kevin No. 2. Oh, he was deeply hurt
- 3:13Speaker 2: with the song's success. But they couldn't come up with
- 3:17Speaker 2: a great follow-up to Come On Eileen. Kevin Rowland was
- 3:20Speaker 2: always trying things with new ideas. Well, that's what kind
- 3:25Speaker 2: of led Dexy's Midnight Runners into the point of being remembered,
- 3:29Speaker 2: but only as a one-hit wonder. The band we're talking about,
- 3:36Speaker 2: Dexy's Midnight Runners. I'm Arrow, and that's Music's Lost History.
