- 0:37Speaker 4: Void what prohibited. See DraftKings dot com for details. If
- 0:40Speaker 4: you could have one ticket to any event, you can't
- 0:42Speaker 4: pick the Cowboys being in something.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Oh so it has to be was already thinking of
- 0:45Speaker 3: the super Bowl.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Now it can be a super Bowl ticket, Okay, but
- 0:49Speaker 4: you can't say to see the Cowboys because you don't know, correct, right,
- 0:52Speaker 4: what sporting event would you go to.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I've never been to the super Bowl, so that would
- 0:56Speaker 3: be the one.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Dude?
- 0:57Speaker 3: How expensive were those I've never had a pay for
- 1:00Speaker 3: I don't know, But like you've.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Heard right, Yeah, I mean you could probably get in
- 1:03Speaker 4: closer to the game for a lot cheaper if you'd
- 1:05Speaker 4: like go there.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Like ten grand.
- 1:08Speaker 3: I think ten grand. I think you can get in
- 1:10Speaker 3: day for like a thousand bucks. Hey yeah, from a
- 1:12Speaker 3: scalp for one thousand bucks up high.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Yeah, you can get good seats three weeks out, depending
- 1:18Speaker 4: on the team too. But yet, I mean not you can.
- 1:20Speaker 4: I promise you can get it for a thousand bucks.
- 1:22Speaker 5: I've always thought that it's like one of those tickets
- 1:24Speaker 5: where you're like, oh, dude, you'll never be able to
- 1:25Speaker 5: afford that.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I mean, that's crazy amount of money.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I've gone twice, and it's cool and fine to go.
- 1:32Speaker 3: It's it's just nothing special. But if your team's in it,
- 1:34Speaker 3: oh don't you want to be there?
- 1:36Speaker 4: You do, but you don't feel like your team's in it.
- 1:37Speaker 4: I mean you do cause you're watching it, but it's
- 1:39Speaker 4: not like you're with other rabid fans. It's so corporate
- 1:42Speaker 4: and it's people everywhere.
- 1:43Speaker 3: They say the average price is eight thousand dollars.
- 1:46Speaker 4: It's average, though, I'm saying you can get in for
- 1:47Speaker 4: a thousand bucks day of the lowest ticket.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I bet you get in a thousand bucks, says the
- 1:52Speaker 3: lowest is six thousand. I don't think so. For what
- 1:54Speaker 3: super Bowl? Though? Is that just the last one super Bowl?
- 1:56Speaker 3: That's crazy?
- 1:57Speaker 1: LA?
- 1:57Speaker 3: Maybe because it wasn't in La.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Yeah, Tampa, maybe La, La, because I remember, I'll still
- 2:03Speaker 4: saying I think can get it for a thousand bucks.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I stand by it. Crappy seats. Is this experiment we
- 2:08Speaker 4: need to do? Make a bet on it?
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yes, So yeah, it's fun. If you can, you can go.
- 2:14Speaker 3: What about yours? Your what's your ticket?
- 2:15Speaker 4: Probably college FOOTBA championship. That'll be fun.
- 2:18Speaker 5: That'd be really cool. Any team, well, you can't pick
- 2:21Speaker 5: a team. I know, it doesn't matter who it is.
- 2:23Speaker 5: That's gonna be Alabama. That's the whole point of this game.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Like especially like next year, I through a twelve team playoff.
- 2:28Speaker 5: Oh yeah, and everybody's all injured and it's only like
- 2:30Speaker 5: four people left. So that's not the same vibe. It's
- 2:33Speaker 5: not about money and college championship.
- 2:36Speaker 4: NFL is way more corporate. College is way more fan based.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Mayhem. Yeah, that would be cool.
- 2:43Speaker 4: So we're here, Hopra has a great holiday. We're gonna
- 2:46Speaker 4: look back at some of our favorite twenty five whistles.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Interviews from twenty twenty three takes some time, and if
- 2:49Speaker 4: you've missed any of this, it's pretty cool. I mean
- 2:52Speaker 4: it's not super timely where if you missed it, it's
- 2:54Speaker 4: not entertaining. But Part one of this includes basketball and
- 2:57Speaker 4: career talk with Doug Gottlieb from Fox Radio, who is
- 3:00Speaker 4: the all time assist leader at Oklahoma State and is
- 3:03Speaker 4: like top five in all of n C DOUBLEA.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah, good interview, which is pretty crazy. Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 4: We'll do football and coaching with Chris Climbing at Kansas State,
- 3:09Speaker 4: and then we'll get into some gambling with ESPN's expert
- 3:12Speaker 4: Stanford Steve.
- 3:14Speaker 3: The Stanford Steve interview is cool, fun. Yeah, you learn
- 3:16Speaker 3: a lot.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Doug Gottlieb, great basketball player. We'll start with him at
- 3:18Speaker 4: Oklahoma State. He's top ten here, it is all time
- 3:20Speaker 4: in NCUBLEA cur assists with nine hundred and forty seven.
- 3:23Speaker 4: He talked about all that playing days, which college town
- 3:25Speaker 4: he'd likes to live in at a bunch more followed
- 3:27Speaker 4: Doug on Twitter at Gottlieb Show and listen to him
- 3:29Speaker 4: on Fox Sports Radio here. He is Doug Gottlieb, Doug,
- 3:31Speaker 4: what's up man? All good man, Hey, I was looking
- 3:34Speaker 4: at the Wikipedia for all time assists leaders, and I
- 3:37Speaker 4: had known that you were one of the top ten
- 3:39Speaker 4: NC double assist leaders of all time. I would just
- 3:41Speaker 4: be obsessed with making sure that nobody was coming up
- 3:44Speaker 4: on me. Do you look and see who's approaching so
- 3:47Speaker 4: you don't get knocked off the top of the list.
- 3:49Speaker 6: It's like the guys that are good enough usually go pro.
- 3:54Speaker 6: You know, these COVID year guys. You're worried about guys
- 3:58Speaker 6: getting fit in six years coming up beaten. Yet Oh yeah,
- 4:02Speaker 6: last year Noel whatever from Kansas State, huh Marquis Nowell. Yeah,
- 4:10Speaker 6: he was getting really close to my single season in
- 4:12Speaker 6: the Big twelve, and had they won in the Elite eight,
- 4:15Speaker 6: I was cooked and he was like really close. I
- 4:16Speaker 6: think he finished like three short of me. So I
- 4:19Speaker 6: hadn't been in that position before, but I was like, yeah, dude,
- 4:22Speaker 6: like anybody who says they don't give it about their records,
- 4:26Speaker 6: this is fully, you know, like you want something for posterity.
- 4:30Speaker 6: I used to be seventh and the guy who's sixth
- 4:32Speaker 6: is Greg Anthony. I was literally three short of him.
- 4:36Speaker 6: He played a whole bunch more games than I did.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Because they went to they won a national championship, and
- 4:41Speaker 6: they went to the national semi finals. Right, But like,
- 4:44Speaker 6: I'm still bitter because my junior year, when I led
- 4:48Speaker 6: the country and assist, I was in the doghouse for
- 4:50Speaker 6: eight games. So I actually in overall average, that was
- 4:55Speaker 6: the fewest minutes per game I played in my career.
- 4:59Speaker 6: And so obviously, had I not been the doghouse where
- 5:03Speaker 6: my coach just like benched me for a game or
- 5:05Speaker 6: not played me for a game, Like if you benched
- 5:07Speaker 6: me just like one game, hey, you don't play, it
- 5:09Speaker 6: wouldn't have hurt my average, but it would hurt my
- 5:11Speaker 6: average but when or my average, but my overall total
- 5:14Speaker 6: would have been lower. But I went through a stretch
- 5:16Speaker 6: where I was playing like eight or ten minutes anyway.
- 5:18Speaker 6: So then you're like, if he hadn't done that to me,
- 5:20Speaker 6: I would have been like third or fourth all the time,
- 5:22Speaker 6: you know, So there's a yes, I definitely pay attention
- 5:26Speaker 6: to it. I'm not gonna lie to here.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I saw Gary Payton as below. That's pretty cool. You're
- 5:30Speaker 4: above Gary Payton.
- 5:31Speaker 6: Yeah, but he did all kinds of others.
- 5:33Speaker 3: It doesn't matter. I just see a list and Gary Payton.
- 5:36Speaker 6: That's true.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Who yeah, who cares? So a big fan. Been listening
- 5:41Speaker 4: to you forever. Obviously we've established kind of a personal
- 5:44Speaker 4: relationship as well, so I really appreciate you coming on here.
- 5:47Speaker 3: A couple of things I wanted to talk with you about.
- 5:48Speaker 4: First of all, as being an assist guy, did you
- 5:50Speaker 4: ever feel like teams knew you wouldn't shoot.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Like they're like, yes, it was just back off.
- 5:55Speaker 4: And do you feel like you had to then have
- 5:57Speaker 4: games where you would aprove You could still put up
- 5:59Speaker 4: fifteen to twenty.
- 6:00Speaker 6: Yeah, but I couldn't. There was like three games, So
- 6:03Speaker 6: I mean, it's really interesting because like forever in the
- 6:07Speaker 6: Big Twelve, all being known as a guy that could
- 6:09Speaker 6: make every pass, but you know, couldn't throw it in
- 6:10Speaker 6: the ocean. And my last Big Twelve tournament game we
- 6:14Speaker 6: played Iowa State. That Iowa State team was probably the
- 6:17Speaker 6: second best team in the country that year. They lost
- 6:20Speaker 6: to Michigan State in the Elite eight, who ultimately won
- 6:23Speaker 6: the national championship, and Iowa State l AIRYU. Stacey was the
- 6:28Speaker 6: coach and he tells everybody to this day. And there's
- 6:31Speaker 6: other guys that are head coaches who are assistants on
- 6:33Speaker 6: that staff. But I'll tell you that their whole game
- 6:35Speaker 6: plan was not just to let me shoot, but also
- 6:38Speaker 6: when I drive, they'd fake and then make me finish.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Because I got to this point to where like all
- 6:44Speaker 6: I did was pass, you know, it was like it
- 6:48Speaker 6: was like the yips at first, and then it just
- 6:51Speaker 6: kind of took over my game, and it was it
- 6:53Speaker 6: was literally playing without a jump shot. It was really hard,
- 6:55Speaker 6: and there were a couple of games where it went away,
- 6:58Speaker 6: where the likes of it went away, and like I
- 7:02Speaker 6: had nineteen against other miss I had my last home
- 7:05Speaker 6: game against Oklahoma, I had two big threes. We played
- 7:08Speaker 6: a kansasite a couple of big threes, but generally I
- 7:12Speaker 6: just mentally, emotionally couldn't get myself to relax shooting, and
- 7:17Speaker 6: everybody in the league knew it. So it was really
- 7:20Speaker 6: it's actually like you ask people, like what I was
- 7:23Speaker 6: able to accomplish, especially like my senior year, is kind
- 7:28Speaker 6: of gratifying because literally played without a jump shot, and
- 7:32Speaker 6: that's hard. It's like living without one of your senses,
- 7:35Speaker 6: so all the rest of your senses become heightened, but
- 7:37Speaker 6: that one sense is really really hard to play without.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Do you feel like you lost your shot as you
- 7:44Speaker 4: got older and specialized more? Meaning in high school? Could
- 7:46Speaker 4: you fill it out better?
- 7:48Speaker 1: Oh?
- 7:48Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah. I mean I wouldn't have been recruited and
- 7:51Speaker 6: been rated as highly as I was if I couldn't shoot.
- 7:54Speaker 6: I mean I was never step Curry, but I pattered
- 7:58Speaker 6: my game after Bobby Hurly, and you know, he got
- 8:03Speaker 6: to be a better, better shooter. In college, I was.
- 8:06Speaker 6: I scored. I was the ultimately scorer in my high school.
- 8:09Speaker 6: I had forty four in a game. I could shoot
- 8:11Speaker 6: and score well enough, but I'm ultimately a bit of
- 8:15Speaker 6: I think, a control freak. And so part of what
- 8:18Speaker 6: happened early in my career and then at Notre Dame
- 8:21Speaker 6: and then at Oklahoma State was, you know, I wanted
- 8:23Speaker 6: to control who got the shots and kind of be
- 8:26Speaker 6: the hero by creating opportunities for my teammates. And I
- 8:31Speaker 6: also I got big and strong, and I think I
- 8:34Speaker 6: lost some of my touch. And then when I lost
- 8:36Speaker 6: some of my touch and I was trying to control things,
- 8:39Speaker 6: you know, then your shooting percentages go down and down
- 8:41Speaker 6: and down, and then you just kind of get in
- 8:44Speaker 6: this mentality of Okay, if I just do what I
- 8:46Speaker 6: can do best, and if I don't miss a shot,
- 8:50Speaker 6: I'll never come out of the game. I hated coming
- 8:52Speaker 6: out of games, and it worked against me because I
- 8:56Speaker 6: figured if I don't miss, well, he can't take me out.
- 9:00Speaker 6: If I don't shoot, I can't miss. So I just
- 9:02Speaker 6: wouldn't shoot, and then ultimately people wul dare me to shoot,
- 9:04Speaker 6: and then it became really difficult. I don't know if
- 9:06Speaker 6: I'm making sense.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Would they ever talk trash and be like you can't shoot, Hey,
- 9:10Speaker 4: you can't shoot shoot it?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Shoot it every game?
- 9:12Speaker 6: Really every game, every game, and it's you know, you'd
- 9:16Speaker 6: sit there and literally the hardest thing to do, I
- 9:19Speaker 6: think is you're wide open every time you get It's
- 9:22Speaker 6: like Ben Simmons, how they is like, you're open. You
- 9:26Speaker 6: can shoot the ball anytime you want, and it's technically
- 9:29Speaker 6: an open shot, you know. And again this is also
- 9:32Speaker 6: remember this is in like ninety nine two thousand, So
- 9:37Speaker 6: my so, like my coach at the time, like taken
- 9:40Speaker 6: in a good better shot, Like it's actually a better
- 9:44Speaker 6: shot to shoot a three, or you can make if
- 9:46Speaker 6: you make you know three out of ten, it's it's
- 9:51Speaker 6: equally as good as making you know four out of
- 9:54Speaker 6: ten or five out of ten two's, and so I
- 9:57Speaker 6: you know, if I could go back and do it,
- 9:59Speaker 6: I would have sat down, like it's like, look, man,
- 10:01Speaker 6: you gotta let me. Just let me do. Let me
- 10:03Speaker 6: shoot what I'm open, don't take me out, take me out.
- 10:07Speaker 6: When I turned down open shots, and if I make
- 10:09Speaker 6: a couple, everything else will open up. But I didn't.
- 10:12Speaker 6: You know, I was intimidated, and I was in my
- 10:15Speaker 6: own head, and you know, it became really really hard,
- 10:19Speaker 6: and I take a personal sort of pride from it.
- 10:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:23Speaker 6: The way I tried to work into my mind was
- 10:26Speaker 6: if I sucked athletically, or if I sucked at others,
- 10:28Speaker 6: they wouldn't they wouldn't play off me, right, There'd be
- 10:31Speaker 6: no fear of me, period. But the reality is it's
- 10:34Speaker 6: hard for me even to go back and watch or
- 10:36Speaker 6: show my kids, my kid that the way I played,
- 10:40Speaker 6: because it's kind of embarrassing when guys playing five feet
- 10:43Speaker 6: offee and you don't shoot.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Could you go back and take tape and appeal and
- 10:47Speaker 4: be like, no, this was an assist.
- 10:48Speaker 3: You guys did not count it.
- 10:49Speaker 4: I need to move up the layers two assists from
- 10:51Speaker 4: this game, cauld I'll be doing that crap.
- 10:54Speaker 6: It's a great question and the answer is one time.
- 10:57Speaker 6: So we played against UNLB and a really a guy
- 11:01Speaker 6: who's become a really good friend of mine. His name
- 11:02Speaker 6: is Mark Dipple. Mark is Australia and Mark was their
- 11:05Speaker 6: point guard. And so we played them my junior year
- 11:09Speaker 6: and we stomped them, and that was when I came
- 11:11Speaker 6: out of the dog. I was in the doghouse. I
- 11:12Speaker 6: was going to leave the team. And I had a
- 11:14Speaker 6: great game in Vegas, and as as chance would happen,
- 11:18Speaker 6: we played them again my senior year, also in Vegas,
- 11:22Speaker 6: and so we get downe we molly wolt them. And
- 11:26Speaker 6: I remember I'd always gotten a statue half time and
- 11:29Speaker 6: after the game and I grabbed statute and I had
- 11:31Speaker 6: like four assists, and I was like, what the you know?
- 11:36Speaker 6: This is some bowl. And our other our assistant coach
- 11:41Speaker 6: was my coach's son, his named Sean Sutton, who was
- 11:43Speaker 6: also point guard, and he's like, oh, there's some you know,
- 11:47Speaker 6: Like so we actually went back and I was and
- 11:51Speaker 6: I know in my mind about how many I had,
- 11:54Speaker 6: Like I was like, I think I had thirteen or fourteen.
- 11:57Speaker 6: And we went back and like little by definition of assist.
- 12:01Speaker 6: It was like twelve and I was trying to you know,
- 12:05Speaker 6: I was trying to lead the country again. I was
- 12:07Speaker 6: trying to get the all time mark, which is Bobby
- 12:10Speaker 6: Hurley's mark, which is probably out of reach. So we
- 12:15Speaker 6: sent it back, We sent it to the NCAA and
- 12:18Speaker 6: they get I think they gave me nine. Gave me
- 12:20Speaker 6: nine as sists. So it was the only time we
- 12:22Speaker 6: ever did that. And really, like here's here's how crazy
- 12:26Speaker 6: in what a small world Oklahoma State is. And you
- 12:30Speaker 6: know this from your time with your TV show and
- 12:33Speaker 6: go into all these small college towns. Right is the
- 12:37Speaker 6: guy who kept stats at Oklahoma State is named Lee Manser.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Lee's son, Brendon, played there. Lee was my marketing professors.
- 12:48Speaker 6: Matter of fact, my last course that I had to take.
- 12:52Speaker 6: I took correspondence my senior year. I had three hours
- 12:54Speaker 6: left and it took me four years to complete it.
- 12:58Speaker 6: But like he was a not just like literally correspondence courses.
- 13:02Speaker 6: He could have just gave me a sea or whatever.
- 13:04Speaker 6: I had to do all the work. But it's the
- 13:06Speaker 6: same way with statting. Like I my stats weren't great
- 13:09Speaker 6: at home all the time, they weren't It wasn't like
- 13:11Speaker 6: they pumped up my stats. I had my marketing professor
- 13:15Speaker 6: who was screwing me with my stats. So I know
- 13:18Speaker 6: only would you get screwed on the road, but at home,
- 13:20Speaker 6: Like lead Manser was, buy the book an assist and assist,
- 13:23Speaker 6: I'm not giving you extras. And so if you go
- 13:26Speaker 6: back and watch tape, there'd be passes where I turn
- 13:29Speaker 6: and I point to my marketing professor who's keeping the
- 13:31Speaker 6: stats for our team.
- 13:32Speaker 4: That's a real story, just to remind him, Hey, Lead,
- 13:35Speaker 4: don't miss that.
- 13:35Speaker 6: That's exactly what I do. That's an assist. And he'd
- 13:38Speaker 6: be like, like, that's an assist. Doug gottlib show directly
- 13:43Speaker 6: to a basket. That's the definition of.
- 13:45Speaker 3: The podcast is really good.
- 13:46Speaker 4: It's all ball with Doug Gottlieb, and you can listen
- 13:48Speaker 4: to it on iHeartRadio where you listen to your podcasts,
- 13:50Speaker 4: or the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio three
- 13:52Speaker 4: to five Eastern.
- 13:54Speaker 3: So a couple of things I wanted to talk about.
- 13:55Speaker 6: I ask you a question, you know, Okay, come on,
- 13:59Speaker 6: let me just add one question.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Okay, I'm ready.
- 14:01Speaker 6: Okay, So I've said this like Boise is the best
- 14:06Speaker 6: city that you'll never visit. Yes to a lot of people. Yes, okay,
- 14:10Speaker 6: And there's Charleston's like that. There's a lot of places
- 14:12Speaker 6: like that. And you traveled this entire country. Heck, I
- 14:14Speaker 6: know you traveled the book. So here's here's a legit question.
- 14:18Speaker 6: All these college towns you've been, you've been to, where's
- 14:22Speaker 6: the place you're like, I kind of wish I would
- 14:25Speaker 6: have gone here. I mean, this is this is If
- 14:27Speaker 6: I could go back and pick a place, this would
- 14:31Speaker 6: be the past.
- 14:31Speaker 4: It's funny you bring up Boise because Eddie, what do
- 14:33Speaker 4: I say.
- 14:34Speaker 3: About Bois Boise? Man, it's wonderful. What do I say?
- 14:36Speaker 3: It's better than Oh, it's another country, which is Hawaii?
- 14:39Speaker 5: WHI that's right, that's it's another country that.
- 14:42Speaker 3: I said, if I got to.
- 14:43Speaker 6: Pick, you see, like another country.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I when I spent time there, when I was doing
- 14:47Speaker 4: my that geo show, I had no idea how versatile
- 14:51Speaker 4: that city is. It doesn't matter what you want to do.
- 14:54Speaker 4: There's some cosmopolitan part of it. There's the outdoors part
- 14:56Speaker 4: of it, there's the traditional sports part. Boise was awesome,
- 15:01Speaker 4: a little too cold for me, but I often am like,
- 15:04Speaker 4: Boise is better than Hawaii to me, because I've been
- 15:06Speaker 4: to Hawaii a bunch and I don't even like the beach.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I know you're from California. I like, I grew up
- 15:10Speaker 4: in Arkansas. We didn't have a beach. I don't like
- 15:11Speaker 4: the beach. I don't even know what you do. You
- 15:12Speaker 4: sit there in the sand. Okay, what do I do now?
- 15:15Speaker 6: Yeah? I mean lake. Honestly, Lake in many ways can
- 15:18Speaker 6: be better than beach. I'm not gonna lie to you there. Yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 6: because it's warmer. Yeah, there's there's a lot of these
- 15:26Speaker 6: plus like super fear of dying for me in like waves.
- 15:31Speaker 6: So I'm the guy who grew up in Orange County
- 15:33Speaker 6: and I suck at surfing. My son laughs at me
- 15:35Speaker 6: and says I'm the worst. But I'm kind of with you.
- 15:38Speaker 6: I mean, Hawaii does have incredible hikes, you know, and
- 15:43Speaker 6: and different topography than than we have.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Times out times in Hawaii can't work there.
- 15:50Speaker 6: Yeah, the time zone is really hard.
- 15:52Speaker 4: So Boise is good. I think Madison wis Content's awesome.
- 15:55Speaker 4: If it just wasn't so cold.
- 15:57Speaker 6: I think it's it's it's so freaking cold there.
- 15:59Speaker 4: I mean, we went really cool, did a show at
- 16:01Speaker 4: the Orphium there once and it was winter, and we
- 16:03Speaker 4: had winter in Arkansas.
- 16:04Speaker 3: We had seasons. However, we didn't have lakes.
- 16:07Speaker 4: That froze over and jeeps would drive on them. We
- 16:10Speaker 4: pulled over the car and Eddie wanted to go walk
- 16:12Speaker 4: out on the lake because it was just frozen.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I'm from South Texas, man, I've never seen anything like that.
- 16:16Speaker 3: That to me is bizarre.
- 16:18Speaker 4: It was awesome. So Madison is a really cool town.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I like passion. I like almost rabid passion Athens, Georgia,
- 16:25Speaker 4: and I'm not saying it because Georgia is good. I
- 16:27Speaker 4: like the climate, and I like the music scene. I
- 16:29Speaker 4: think Athens, Georgia Fabuel obviously is my favorite, but Athens,
- 16:32Speaker 4: Georgie is probably number one with Boise.
- 16:35Speaker 6: You and I've been so many places urban ones. The
- 16:46Speaker 6: most underrated urban one I think is the University of
- 16:48Speaker 6: Washington because Seattle feels like a different country land. You're like, man,
- 16:53Speaker 6: this is really far from the rest of the country,
- 16:55Speaker 6: but it's close enough to the city. You have the
- 16:58Speaker 6: water right there. It's a cool looking campus. That's I
- 17:02Speaker 6: think my most underrated urban one in terms of like
- 17:07Speaker 6: college town or place that I could I could totally
- 17:10Speaker 6: dig like I love Austin. I don't think I could
- 17:12Speaker 6: go to school in Austin. I just feel like, I
- 17:15Speaker 6: don't know, there's so much other stuff going on. I
- 17:17Speaker 6: loved at Oklahoma State, how it was just all about
- 17:20Speaker 6: the school. New Mexico is kind of underrated, to be
- 17:24Speaker 6: totally honest with you. I like Utah State in Logan,
- 17:29Speaker 6: Utah that that's actually a super the Cash Valley again,
- 17:32Speaker 6: I know you don't like cold, actually very hot, warm
- 17:34Speaker 6: in the summer, and kind of smoggy. It's like, I
- 17:37Speaker 6: think it's the smoggiest place in the country.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Warm me up, let's go global warming baby.
- 17:43Speaker 6: It's it's really But if I was gonna pick one
- 17:47Speaker 6: and I was like, man, if I could do it
- 17:49Speaker 6: all over again, I think it would probably be Tescaloosive.
- 17:55Speaker 3: No way, you're out of your mind. You're out of
- 17:57Speaker 3: your mind.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Well. I took a visit to Tusca Lusa when this
- 18:03Speaker 6: was before they were really good in football. I transferred
- 18:06Speaker 6: from Notre Dame to and I was sitting out of
- 18:08Speaker 6: junior college and I went there and uh, they had
- 18:13Speaker 6: I'm Jewish and they have the Jewish training. The Sammy's
- 18:16Speaker 6: through me a party just for me. I have my
- 18:19Speaker 6: own female escort to the party. It was it was
- 18:22Speaker 6: so cool, Like just the South. I don't know how
- 18:24Speaker 6: they do it in the South is really cool. The
- 18:26Speaker 6: only issue I have with schools in the South is
- 18:29Speaker 6: that they care about basketball and the big games, but
- 18:33Speaker 6: they kind of don't give a crap most of the year,
- 18:35Speaker 6: Whereas when I was at Oklahoma State, like we kind
- 18:37Speaker 6: of ran the school and that was very very cool.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Maybe Tuscaloosa for both of us, is just associated with
- 18:42Speaker 4: an emotion. I just associated with getting the crap kicked
- 18:44Speaker 4: out of me every time we go down to play football,
- 18:46Speaker 4: Like I have to go stand within amongst the statues here.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Wait wait wait, wait, wait, go ahead, I wanna switch.
- 18:53Speaker 6: I want to switch full miss.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Yeah, all Miss is awesome. Auxer is awesome.
- 18:57Speaker 6: I just because like you go, it's like going back
- 19:00Speaker 6: in time when you go to their little town square.
- 19:03Speaker 6: It's so cool.
- 19:04Speaker 4: It's a little rich. It's a little rich for me,
- 19:06Speaker 4: not like cake like money and like I didn't have
- 19:09Speaker 4: money for most of my life and it was like
- 19:11Speaker 4: all rich people and like fraternities and sororities.
- 19:16Speaker 3: But yeah, it is.
- 19:17Speaker 6: It definitely is. I will point out, Bobby, I don't
- 19:20Speaker 6: know if you know this, but you are rich now.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Now, yes, but I still I still feel like I'm
- 19:25Speaker 4: not for the.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Most part, he's not talking about cake either. No, right, yeah, no, no.
- 19:30Speaker 6: Look, I get it. Like I remember when I went
- 19:32Speaker 6: to Notaday my freshman year, and you know, people can google,
- 19:36Speaker 6: it's not hard to find like I screwed up, but
- 19:38Speaker 6: it's stupid, stupid stuff. But I loved some of the
- 19:42Speaker 6: spirit of it. But I did feel like, obviously I
- 19:45Speaker 6: had never been to a private school. I wasn't Catholic,
- 19:49Speaker 6: but more than anything, there was a lot of affluence
- 19:51Speaker 6: there and I was just a kid from Orange, California,
- 19:57Speaker 6: and it was I'm not I'm not saying like I
- 20:00Speaker 6: walked uphill to school barefoot but naked in the snow.
- 20:05Speaker 6: You know it's uphill both ways. But I didn't come
- 20:07Speaker 6: from a ton and I just felt like, I remember
- 20:10Speaker 6: they had j Crew catalogs that got delivered to our
- 20:14Speaker 6: entire dorm, and dudes who get the Jaque catalog and
- 20:16Speaker 6: the others go through and they this is what I want,
- 20:18Speaker 6: and they would tell their mom whatever and they ordered
- 20:20Speaker 6: and it's like I didn't even know what JA crew
- 20:22Speaker 6: was like, literally, I had one pair of jeans and
- 20:24Speaker 6: had my mom got me this horrendous LLBean parka green
- 20:28Speaker 6: llllbean parka, and that was like my warm my winter coat,
- 20:32Speaker 6: and I anytime was below fifty. You talked about Madison
- 20:36Speaker 6: and weather, but people don't know about being by the lake,
- 20:39Speaker 6: especially on the other side of Lake Michigan. Is it's
- 20:42Speaker 6: not just lake effect snow. You get lake effect overcast weather.
- 20:47Speaker 6: So I mean, I remember not seeing the sun for
- 20:52Speaker 6: the entire month of November, like literally the sun never
- 20:56Speaker 6: came out late October, November and in December and then
- 20:59Speaker 6: it got old and snowy and it really kind of
- 21:01Speaker 6: affected you mentally. So that's the that's the part of that,
- 21:05Speaker 6: that side of it.
- 21:06Speaker 3: That's why I didn't play football in the Big Ten. Oh,
- 21:08Speaker 3: that's it, because it was just too cold for me.
- 21:10Speaker 4: I just didn't feel like for me, that was you know,
- 21:13Speaker 4: the ingredients weren't there. So speaking of football, a couple
- 21:16Speaker 4: of things here, because I listened to you, and you
- 21:20Speaker 4: have no fear, which I admire in just giving your
- 21:24Speaker 4: opinion and if you're wrong, going hey, you know way
- 21:27Speaker 4: back then that's kind of wrong. But so I like
- 21:29Speaker 4: that because sometimes I struggle with saying I'm wrong. I
- 21:31Speaker 4: just forget ever said it. I'm like, no, never heard
- 21:33Speaker 4: of it. So let's talk for a second about c J.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Stroud. Now, what did you think of c J.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Stroud when he when he was drafted by the Texans,
- 21:42Speaker 4: and then what do you think of him now? And
- 21:43Speaker 4: what's the difference in your mind on what he can
- 21:46Speaker 4: do his ceiling?
- 21:48Speaker 6: Okay, so we all carry like biases right against guys,
- 21:54Speaker 6: and the problem is you went to Ohio State and
- 21:57Speaker 6: how many O High state quarterbacks have we seen that
- 22:00Speaker 6: they're throwing the guys who are wide open? You know? So,
- 22:03Speaker 6: like how much skill does it take when you have
- 22:05Speaker 6: It's like the old back when USC was rolling and
- 22:09Speaker 6: Carson Palmer was great, Matt Lioner wasn't a good college
- 22:12Speaker 6: wasn't a great pro quarterback. Why because like in the pros,
- 22:15Speaker 6: you've got to throw guys open.
- 22:17Speaker 2: You don't have.
- 22:17Speaker 6: Better players than everybody else. So I think part of
- 22:20Speaker 6: the CJ. Stroud thing was, like the quarterback the two
- 22:24Speaker 6: quarterbacks before him had both put up ridiculous numbers and
- 22:27Speaker 6: weren't good pros. And you're watching a guy he didn't
- 22:30Speaker 6: move around a ton, and he was just kind of okay,
- 22:35Speaker 6: again based upon the billing last year. Meanwhile, Bryce Young
- 22:39Speaker 6: I saw playing high school. I live close to modern day.
- 22:42Speaker 6: I have friends that are there. And he's always been
- 22:44Speaker 6: seen as this like quarterbacks savant read defenses, can move
- 22:48Speaker 6: around and throw. And he's tiny. He's he's by NFL standards,
- 22:52Speaker 6: he's an oompalloomboo. You know, he's not part of the
- 22:55Speaker 6: lollipop lollipop game. And I thought, okay, well, outside of
- 22:59Speaker 6: him being small, and there's been small guys Russell Wilson, Kyler, Murray,
- 23:02Speaker 6: Drew Brees, maybe he can do it because he has
- 23:05Speaker 6: all these other things, whereas C. J. Stroud is bigger, stronger,
- 23:08Speaker 6: But like, does he move that well? Is he really
- 23:10Speaker 6: that good? Is it just that Ohio State has way
- 23:13Speaker 6: better players than everybody else's. Ohio State has this like
- 23:15Speaker 6: it's like Alabama. They have all these great wide receivers
- 23:18Speaker 6: and they're just better than nine of the ten opponents
- 23:20Speaker 6: they play. So I carried that against him and I
- 23:22Speaker 6: was like, I don't get it. I don't see him
- 23:25Speaker 6: being star. What's his ceiling? I mean, I don't know
- 23:28Speaker 6: if he can be a superstar. But you can't do
- 23:32Speaker 6: anything in the NFL unless you have a dude back there,
- 23:36Speaker 6: a guy you can count on, a guy that can play,
- 23:38Speaker 6: can deliver the mail. He doesn't have to be Aaron Rodgers,
- 23:42Speaker 6: he doesn't have to be Pat Mahomes. But he can't
- 23:44Speaker 6: be one of these guys that stinks. He can't be
- 23:47Speaker 6: Zach Wilson. He can't be a guy that And then
- 23:49Speaker 6: the real magic to building a team in the NFL
- 23:51Speaker 6: is you got to do it during years two, three,
- 23:54Speaker 6: and four of their rookie contract because they don't make
- 23:56Speaker 6: much money, and then you can build a whole roster
- 23:58Speaker 6: around them. Houston has that. So that's where I I
- 24:03Speaker 6: do two things though, Bobby, I want to make sure
- 24:04Speaker 6: I point this out. I will say that I'm wrong,
- 24:06Speaker 6: but I also don't hate saying when I was right.
- 24:09Speaker 1: You know.
- 24:11Speaker 6: Second, everybody was like, you know, I don't want to
- 24:14Speaker 6: be that guy. No, I like being that guy. I
- 24:15Speaker 6: really like being that guy that says yet No, I
- 24:18Speaker 6: like to say I told you so, what about that?
- 24:20Speaker 6: That's why it works for me.
- 24:21Speaker 4: The situation in Michigan right now, is this going to
- 24:23Speaker 4: get worse before it gets better or will we just
- 24:25Speaker 4: look back at this and laugh in three years.
- 24:27Speaker 6: I think we'll look back and laugh three years. It's stupid, stupid,
- 24:33Speaker 6: you know. I mean, look, was there Hubris? Is that
- 24:36Speaker 6: why they sent some ex marine out on the road
- 24:40Speaker 6: to go and yeah, and like he put everything under
- 24:42Speaker 6: his own name, like they weren't even trying to hide it.
- 24:47Speaker 6: But like this idea of advanced scouting. I mean, I
- 24:51Speaker 6: don't know if you know this story. Mike Leach, the
- 24:53Speaker 6: late Mike Leech, who of course was at Mississippi State,
- 24:56Speaker 6: Washington State, and Texas Tech. And there's a story you
- 24:59Speaker 6: can google it seat online. He was the offensive coordinator
- 25:02Speaker 6: at Oklahoma Bob Stoops's first year nineteen ninety nine two
- 25:05Speaker 6: thousand and they beat Texas and the famous story was
- 25:08Speaker 6: they left a scatter report mistakenly on the field at
- 25:12Speaker 6: the Cotton Bowl before the game, and then they knew
- 25:16Speaker 6: Texas thought things were coming and they did the opposite. Right,
- 25:19Speaker 6: this stuff's been happening. Like I played football growing up,
- 25:23Speaker 6: and I remember, like we used to line up with
- 25:27Speaker 6: our backs to the other team in case they were
- 25:29Speaker 6: spying on us. High school football teams think somebody spying them,
- 25:33Speaker 6: So everybody assumes somebody's looking and trying to find your signals.
- 25:38Speaker 6: You know, basketball teams they used copy or they go
- 25:41Speaker 6: to a tournament and they find your hand signals and
- 25:43Speaker 6: your calls. They wouldn't have three different signs and guys
- 25:47Speaker 6: you know, you know, doing the Larry Moe and Curly
- 25:50Speaker 6: if they didn't think somebody was saying I just I
- 25:53Speaker 6: think part of it is people don't really like harball.
- 25:56Speaker 6: Part of it is there is some a ton of
- 25:59Speaker 6: arrogance there with Michigan. And part of it is like
- 26:02Speaker 6: we've crept in this era now where everybody has a
- 26:05Speaker 6: cell phone, so there's no real secrets, right, and we
- 26:12Speaker 6: knew this was going on, and there's counterintelligence going on
- 26:16Speaker 6: as well. It looks bad they're holding hardball out and
- 26:20Speaker 6: I'm only interested in what happens against Ohio State if
- 26:23Speaker 6: that somehow changes the tenor of the game. I don't
- 26:27Speaker 6: think he makes play calls. I don't think he does
- 26:29Speaker 6: a ton game day outside of that one decision do
- 26:32Speaker 6: we go for it, do we not go for it?
- 26:33Speaker 6: Do we punt here? Do we go for it? You know,
- 26:36Speaker 6: like the last and final word you're missing and the
- 26:39Speaker 6: adjustments at halftime for a guy who you know, played
- 26:42Speaker 6: at every level and played well and then has coached
- 26:44Speaker 6: at every level and coached well. So I think those
- 26:47Speaker 6: things you are missing. But yeah, we're gonna look back
- 26:50Speaker 6: and go really, you know, it's like you know this,
- 26:53Speaker 6: the SEC was buying kids long before, and I like,
- 26:57Speaker 6: that's the best advantage you can have have better players
- 27:00Speaker 6: the other team, whereas the Big Ten, like this is cheating.
- 27:03Speaker 6: The SEC has to be laughing at the Big Ten.
- 27:05Speaker 4: The Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio Monday through
- 27:08Speaker 4: Friday three to five Eastern and All Ball with Doug Gottlieb,
- 27:11Speaker 4: Great podcast on iHeartRadio wherever you get your podcasts. Doug,
- 27:14Speaker 4: massive fan, thank you for the time I listened. Basically
- 27:17Speaker 4: everything I want in studio.
- 27:19Speaker 6: I want to be one of the Mimians in studio.
- 27:21Speaker 4: You come on the live here, but you can come
- 27:24Speaker 4: whenever you want, so whenever you're here, just come in,
- 27:27Speaker 4: all right, that's all deal, Dundale.
- 27:29Speaker 6: I'm a fan as well. I want to reach out
- 27:31Speaker 6: of It wasn't but I didn't love you, so thanks.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Bobby Well, Doug appreciates the time, buddy, see you later.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Twenty five whistles presented by DraftKings Sportsbook, an official sports
- 27:38Speaker 4: betting partner of the NFL. Download the DraftKings app and
- 27:41Speaker 4: use the code Bobby sports to get in on the action.
- 27:44Speaker 4: You know, the whole deal is with the parlay. It's
- 27:47Speaker 4: you need to make well, let's just say three, it
- 27:49Speaker 4: can be nine. Eddie likes to do the sixteen game parlays.
- 27:51Speaker 3: For a dollar twelve. Don't be crazy.
- 27:53Speaker 4: And you did hit one like a six gamer, didn't you,
- 27:55Speaker 4: And you look down, you know you hit it or something.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Like, yeah, it's a six gamer.
- 27:58Speaker 5: But that was a same game parlay, which is like
- 28:00Speaker 5: you know, the over unders on points and stuff like
- 28:02Speaker 5: that or yards.
- 28:03Speaker 3: You'd bet like a dollar and you woke up and
- 28:04Speaker 3: he had sixty in your account. Sixty bucks in my
- 28:06Speaker 3: account because I fell asleep. That's awesome.
- 28:08Speaker 4: I mean, that's the key. You just fall asleep after
- 28:10Speaker 4: you bet and you don't stay in stress with it all.
- 28:12Speaker 4: But at parlay, you make multiple bets and if they
- 28:14Speaker 4: all win, you win. If one of them loses, you lose,
- 28:17Speaker 4: but you get better odds if you do that right,
- 28:19Speaker 4: it's super fun. So go to draftking Sportsbook, go to
- 28:22Speaker 4: the app. New users use the code Bobby Sports when
- 28:24Speaker 4: you download the app twenty one and up in most

- 28:41Speaker 4: The second interview of this week's podcast is with current
- 28:43Speaker 4: Kansas State head football coach Chris Cleman. We went to Manhattan,
- 28:46Speaker 4: Kansas as part of our show Too Much Access.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Coach Climb has been the head coach since twenty eighteen.
- 28:51Speaker 4: He's won everywhere he's been, including North Dakota State where
- 28:54Speaker 4: he coached Carson Wentz. We talked about his winning culture championships,
- 28:57Speaker 4: being a leader and a whole bunch more coach. When
- 28:59Speaker 4: you take go over a program because you've been here
- 29:01Speaker 4: a few years, regardless of the program, but especially somewhere
- 29:04Speaker 4: like Kansas State, there are many things that the alumni
- 29:08Speaker 4: and that the local folks are proud of. Hand signals,
- 29:11Speaker 4: if it's a whoopig or if it's the cat, How
- 29:14Speaker 4: quickly do you have to learn to do the hand
- 29:15Speaker 4: signal exactly right? Like day one day one. Are you
- 29:18Speaker 4: scared to do it though immediately because you don't want to,
- 29:20Speaker 4: like do it slightly wrong?
- 29:22Speaker 7: Absolutely, yeah, you don't want to. But no, day one,
- 29:25Speaker 7: they expect you to know it all, and you know,
- 29:28Speaker 7: from em to the hand signal to the Wabash canniball everything.
- 29:32Speaker 7: You gotta know what's the Wabash cannibal It's a song, Yeah,
- 29:37Speaker 7: a song.
- 29:38Speaker 4: No, that's the Macarena. I would just be nervous because
- 29:42Speaker 4: there are times when I meet people and I don't
- 29:45Speaker 4: get their name exactly right, and if I have to
- 29:47Speaker 4: go on TV or something and say their name, I'm like,
- 29:48Speaker 4: I don't want to. Yeah, I have to because if
- 29:50Speaker 4: I'm wrong, everybody's going to know I'm a little bit wrong,
- 29:53Speaker 4: and there's pressure. I was looking a lot of pictures
- 29:54Speaker 4: of you holding the hand sign they is that is
- 29:57Speaker 4: that on a plane? Are they teaching your stuff on
- 29:59Speaker 4: the flight over when you get the job.
- 30:01Speaker 7: Absolutely, That's why I had Kenny Lenou on the flight.
- 30:03Speaker 7: You know, our media relations guy. You're showing me how
- 30:06Speaker 7: to do everything. And but no, I mean it is
- 30:08Speaker 7: such a world wind tour when you first get hired,
- 30:12Speaker 7: and I was in the middle of another season with
- 30:14Speaker 7: another team, and we were trying to win a national championship.
- 30:17Speaker 7: So you'd ask my wife. She still doesn't remember that
- 30:21Speaker 7: sixty days we had of kind of the courtship.
- 30:24Speaker 4: Whenever I get a treadmill or any sort of like
- 30:27Speaker 4: exercise machine, I work on it for I don't know,
- 30:30Speaker 4: a month or so, and then it just turns into
- 30:31Speaker 4: basically a clothes hanger or I just end up throwing close.
- 30:34Speaker 4: Now I noticed right by your disk. Yeah, there's a
- 30:36Speaker 4: piece of cardio equipment. How often do you actually use
- 30:39Speaker 4: it or is it more of just a discussion point? Now?
- 30:42Speaker 7: Did you not know what the equipment is?
- 30:44Speaker 6: No?
- 30:45Speaker 7: Don't It's an elliptical?
- 30:46Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, but I mean how often do you get
- 30:48Speaker 4: on it?
- 30:48Speaker 2: Though?
- 30:48Speaker 7: Actually twice a week?
- 30:50Speaker 2: You still use it?
- 30:50Speaker 7: Yeah, I still use it. No, I don't hang any
- 30:52Speaker 7: clothes on here. I truly use it twice a week.
- 30:55Speaker 7: You can see, we've got some big screens round here,
- 30:57Speaker 7: so my videos up there. So then I put the
- 31:02Speaker 7: video on, watch some of the games, watch some cutups,
- 31:05Speaker 7: watch a lot of the different plays that we're trying
- 31:06Speaker 7: to watch, and I can gotta get a little extra
- 31:09Speaker 7: hard during the season.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Oh that was like Richard Simmons or something. He's like,
- 31:12Speaker 4: he puts his video up there, Yeah, watches sweat into
- 31:14Speaker 4: the oldies.
- 31:16Speaker 7: I would love it if it were that, but no,
- 31:17Speaker 7: this is actually work. The hard thing is I have
- 31:19Speaker 7: my phone with me, and then I'm trying to type
- 31:21Speaker 7: in notes. I'm sweaty, and but I get it done.
- 31:25Speaker 4: If I'm thinking of throughout the week and I'm touring
- 31:29Speaker 4: now doing stand up. But if I think of a
- 31:31Speaker 4: joke concept, I write it on my phone immediately. Sometimes
- 31:34Speaker 4: I go back to it, and sometimes I can remember
- 31:36Speaker 4: what the idea was. Sometimes I can't. As a football coach,
- 31:41Speaker 4: do you do the same with concepts or plays or
- 31:43Speaker 4: schemes where it's like, I have not seen this yet,
- 31:46Speaker 4: let me jot it down, or maybe we should do it,
- 31:47Speaker 4: And then you go back to it and revisit it
- 31:49Speaker 4: in your phone and sometimes you don't even know what
- 31:51Speaker 4: you wrote down.
- 31:52Speaker 7: For me, it's more leadership thoughts, motivating thoughts. I'll get
- 31:57Speaker 7: up in the middle of the night because I never
- 31:59Speaker 7: sleep very well during the season, and my wife will look,
- 32:01Speaker 7: what are you doing, and she'll know that I'm typing
- 32:03Speaker 7: something that I just thought of at two am. To
- 32:06Speaker 7: say something we can do, maybe after a big win,
- 32:10Speaker 7: how do we responding back, maybe after a loss, maybe
- 32:13Speaker 7: after a bad practice, whatever it may be. I'm always
- 32:16Speaker 7: my mind never shuts off during the football season, but
- 32:19Speaker 7: there are times I'll go back in and I'll say, gosh,
- 32:22Speaker 7: when did I do that? And Lucky It'll say, like
- 32:24Speaker 7: three thirty five. I'm like, boy, I don't even remember
- 32:26Speaker 7: getting up.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Who are some of your leadership role models, either that
- 32:30Speaker 4: you've worked for with or that you just read about
- 32:32Speaker 4: that you never knew.
- 32:34Speaker 7: You know, I've been fortunate because I've got a guy
- 32:36Speaker 7: named Ben Newman that's one of the world renowned speakers
- 32:40Speaker 7: in the in the country sports performance coach, and he's
- 32:44Speaker 7: put me on like Ed my Lett, and he's put
- 32:46Speaker 7: me on John Gordon and some of those guys that
- 32:48Speaker 7: I just I love reading motivational books. I love reading
- 32:51Speaker 7: leadership books. But then you know, I'm going to read
- 32:54Speaker 7: a book on Kobe Bryant. You know, I'm just how
- 32:58Speaker 7: those guys, what they did to tick you know, Michael Jordan,
- 33:02Speaker 7: all the great ones of how they were motivated and
- 33:05Speaker 7: what kind of drove them.
- 33:07Speaker 4: I feel like for any success that either me or
- 33:10Speaker 4: my friends, peers have had. Look, we all have a
- 33:13Speaker 4: screw loose, but it's the right screw and it's just
- 33:14Speaker 4: the right amount of loose. And there's you only have
- 33:19Speaker 4: that little amount to still be somewhat saying. I'm only
- 33:22Speaker 4: somewhat saying because it's like I don't sleep well, I
- 33:24Speaker 4: can't stop thinking, I can't stop imagining. You know, my
- 33:27Speaker 4: wife and I always you know, time management, something's always happening.
- 33:31Speaker 4: Do you feel like you got to screw because you're
- 33:34Speaker 4: very successful? Do you feel like you have kind of
- 33:35Speaker 4: a screw loose, but it's the right.
- 33:36Speaker 7: Screwy eight you have to I don't know what screw
- 33:41Speaker 7: that is. It's loose. My wife would tell you for sure,
- 33:43Speaker 7: but you absolutely have to to do what we do,
- 33:47Speaker 7: to do what you do. I mean, it's NonStop. You know,
- 33:50Speaker 7: it's seven days a week right now. You know, you
- 33:54Speaker 7: get in the office by five forty five and you're
- 33:56Speaker 7: leaving it nine thirty quarter to ten, and your mind
- 34:00Speaker 7: still on. When you go home, you visit with your
- 34:02Speaker 7: wife a little bit, you go to bed, you wake up,
- 34:04Speaker 7: and it's just repeat, rent and repeat, rentso and repeat.
- 34:07Speaker 7: So you have to have a little bit of a
- 34:08Speaker 7: screw loose. But it's crazy because I never have felt like,
- 34:11Speaker 7: and I've been doing this for over thirty years, that
- 34:13Speaker 7: I've ever had a job. I assume you probably think
- 34:16Speaker 7: the same thing, that you don't really feel like you
- 34:17Speaker 7: have a job.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I don't until I see the revenue that I bring
- 34:19Speaker 4: in and then I realize I need to be paid more. So,
- 34:22Speaker 4: you know, that's kind of how I'm like, this is
- 34:23Speaker 4: so fun. Let me see the read. Oh, okay, this
- 34:25Speaker 4: is a job I forgot.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Yes, I agree.
- 34:27Speaker 4: And my stepdad worked at the sawmill, right, and I
- 34:29Speaker 4: got to see him go to work and hate his
- 34:32Speaker 4: job every single day. And I had jobs that I
- 34:34Speaker 4: hated every day in doing what I do in the morning,
- 34:37Speaker 4: or touring or this. And it's also like when I
- 34:40Speaker 4: speak to people, I'm like, if you find something that
- 34:42Speaker 4: you love to do, it's not just that I having fun,
- 34:44Speaker 4: but you'll actually want to be better at it. And
- 34:47Speaker 4: when you want to be better at something, like you strive,
- 34:50Speaker 4: you achieve, and it's it's a cycle. You love it,
- 34:53Speaker 4: you get better at it, you have success, and it continues.
- 34:56Speaker 4: So I've found that for me to be successful. But
- 34:58Speaker 4: I agree, this isn't really yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 7: And for us in coaching, we utilize each other so much.
- 35:04Speaker 7: Even when you play against somebody, you know them and
- 35:07Speaker 7: you talk to them in the off season. Some guys
- 35:09Speaker 7: you're really close to in season that you talk to
- 35:12Speaker 7: and you spit ball ideas and you throw things around.
- 35:16Speaker 7: And everybody knows everybody in our profession probably the same
- 35:20Speaker 7: as yours. You know. I've got a bunch of staff
- 35:22Speaker 7: members that have been in the business for thirty plus
- 35:25Speaker 7: years and hey, we played this team this week. Oh yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 7: I know the running back coach, I know the linebacker coach.
- 35:30Speaker 7: I'll give them a call and see if we can
- 35:32Speaker 7: get some some tips or some hand signals or whatever.
- 35:35Speaker 7: Or what was the environment like when we went to
- 35:38Speaker 7: that stadium? And how loud was it? How loud do
- 35:40Speaker 7: you have to have the noise of practice to try
- 35:42Speaker 7: to replicate those things. It's just never enny and it's NonStop.
- 35:45Speaker 7: But that's what makes it so much fun.
- 35:47Speaker 4: What is your wife's favorite month?
- 35:50Speaker 7: Oh boy, I would say probably July, just because that's
- 35:55Speaker 7: when we get a little bit of a break. Her
- 35:58Speaker 7: birthdays in August and I haven't celebrated a bird. It takes.
- 36:00Speaker 7: We're in the middle of Fall Camp, our entire time together.
- 36:03Speaker 7: But she knew what she was getting into. She married
- 36:06Speaker 7: me when I was a graduate assistant making about eight
- 36:09Speaker 7: hundred dollars a month, so she knew exactly what she
- 36:11Speaker 7: was getting into. And I told her, like, your birthday
- 36:14Speaker 7: is in August. That's a bad, bad month. And so
- 36:17Speaker 7: now she just changed it. It's now in December officially. Yeah,
- 36:21Speaker 7: she just says, no, I'm out of town now. So
- 36:23Speaker 7: now she goes out of town every August and gets
- 36:25Speaker 7: away for her birthday. And I sit out of practice
- 36:28Speaker 7: and I'm like, well, she's in good hands. She's doing
- 36:30Speaker 7: our coach.
- 36:31Speaker 5: One of the games I hate is when you guys
- 36:32Speaker 5: played TCU because they're just all purple on the field,
- 36:35Speaker 5: and I'm like, oh gosh, who's Oh yes, Kansas Courre
- 36:38Speaker 5: No that was TCU.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Is it ever? Like?
- 36:41Speaker 6: How well?
- 36:41Speaker 5: The first question when you go into the game, who
- 36:44Speaker 5: decides like, all right, we're wearing the darks, we're wearing
- 36:46Speaker 5: these helmets, we're wearing that. Because you got to coordinate,
- 36:48Speaker 5: especially with a team like that's got purple purple.
- 36:51Speaker 7: Yeah, home team gets the selection. But last year in
- 36:55Speaker 7: the Big twelve championship game, which was at at and
- 36:57Speaker 7: T Stadium. It was a sea of purple. That's all
- 37:01Speaker 7: people saw. And if it weren't for the fact that
- 37:03Speaker 7: I knew where our bench was and the fans we
- 37:06Speaker 7: had behind our bench, but you looked across their bench
- 37:09Speaker 7: and you saw the fans like, but this place is
- 37:11Speaker 7: packed with purple. It was. It was definitely a sea
- 37:13Speaker 7: of purple. But I would say it was probably fifty
- 37:16Speaker 7: to fifty there. Maybe we had a little bit more
- 37:18Speaker 7: even though it was in Fort Worth.
- 37:20Speaker 4: All I remember is texting Eddie because I'm colorblinded. Dark colors,
- 37:24Speaker 4: like everything over like a five on the darkness scale
- 37:26Speaker 4: looks the same. And I was like, dude, I don't know.
- 37:27Speaker 3: What's what now to give them the update, it was.
- 37:29Speaker 4: Like, I'm what, what's that's the border of the numbers?
- 37:33Speaker 4: I can't really tell the difference.
- 37:34Speaker 7: Yeah, there's some We've played a game a number of
- 37:39Speaker 7: years ago and the team had black jerseys and Navy
- 37:44Speaker 7: numbers and we were trying who's in the game, what
- 37:48Speaker 7: number were like, we couldn't tell. They've now made a
- 37:51Speaker 7: rule against that. You can't have contrasting colors on the
- 37:55Speaker 7: numbers to the jersey because you could not tell what
- 37:57Speaker 7: numbers were in the game, and it's that's a nightmare
- 38:00Speaker 7: or for us as coaches to see how many running
- 38:02Speaker 7: backs in the game, how many wide receivers in the game,
- 38:04Speaker 7: you can't even.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Tell the number, and that strategy on their part, right, well,
- 38:07Speaker 4: sure it is. Yeah, that's a game. I feel like
- 38:11Speaker 4: pilloff numbers, We switch numbers during the game. I do
- 38:13Speaker 4: all kinds of crazy stuff. I was looking at since
- 38:17Speaker 4: you join as head coach at Kansas State. I was
- 38:19Speaker 4: looking a lot of the head coaching records just in
- 38:21Speaker 4: those few years. There's just so much progress that's been
- 38:25Speaker 4: here at Kansas State since the moment that you took over,
- 38:28Speaker 4: like actual tangible progress, and I think it's one of
- 38:32Speaker 4: the I won't say underappreciated, but you guys won the
- 38:36Speaker 4: freaking Big twelve last year, and I feel like people
- 38:40Speaker 4: didn't really hold you guys up as high as as
- 38:42Speaker 4: and I think TCU them not having a good showing
- 38:46Speaker 4: in the championship game just took some headlines because everybody's something,
- 38:50Speaker 4: But I feel like you guys did not get the
- 38:51Speaker 4: credit you deserved last year, or didn't get held on
- 38:54Speaker 4: the pedestal as high as you probably should.
- 38:56Speaker 7: Have probably accurate. I think there's a lot of respect
- 39:01Speaker 7: for Kansas State. It doesn't matter if it's football, basketball, baseball,
- 39:05Speaker 7: whatever it may be. But you know, that's probably the
- 39:09Speaker 7: chip on our shoulder too, that you've got to earn
- 39:11Speaker 7: that respect every day. And our guys would be the
- 39:15Speaker 7: first ones to tell you that they probably like the
- 39:18Speaker 7: underdog status and they liked that, you know, being the
- 39:23Speaker 7: hunted perspective, and so you know, we talk about it,
- 39:28Speaker 7: but in the same respect, come every Saturday, you got
- 39:30Speaker 7: to perform anyway. And we've had some really good things happen.
- 39:34Speaker 7: We've had some tough losses here too, but last year
- 39:37Speaker 7: probably validated a lot of the things that we wanted
- 39:41Speaker 7: to get done when we came here in twenty nineteen.
- 39:44Speaker 7: The pandemic year was a disaster for us, like it
- 39:46Speaker 7: was everywhere else and or a lot of people probably
- 39:50Speaker 7: had better success than we did. But I remember in
- 39:52Speaker 7: the pandemic here we would do our COVID testing on
- 39:56Speaker 7: Friday morning and then the trainers would come up and say, Okay,
- 39:59Speaker 7: these five people have COVID. Well, those are two starting guards.
- 40:02Speaker 7: Those are two starting linebackers. Oh and by the way,
- 40:05Speaker 7: they're close contact guys or you're starting defensive end and
- 40:07Speaker 7: you're like, all right, jump on the bus. So soe
- 40:09Speaker 7: who can play? Let's go? And that was that was miserable.
- 40:12Speaker 7: So everything that we've done helps tarnish or magnify what
- 40:18Speaker 7: that was so crappy in twenty twenty. But for us
- 40:21Speaker 7: to get that big twelve championship last year kind of
- 40:24Speaker 7: validated everything that we wanted to get done here when
- 40:26Speaker 7: we came here in twenty nineteen.
- 40:27Speaker 4: It's just such a big deal. It's Power five Conference.
- 40:30Speaker 4: You win the championship. Yeah, we still have to hear
- 40:33Speaker 4: about and you don't need to comment. It's stupid Texas.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly who they are. So it's like, who cares
- 40:39Speaker 3: about you?
- 40:41Speaker 4: Don't comment on that, coach, that's just were still play
- 40:43Speaker 4: them this year. You said nothing about that. I just
- 40:45Speaker 4: I was doing our comments here. What do your players
- 40:48Speaker 4: know you for? Oh boy, well you get a chance
- 40:52Speaker 4: to be with Cooper b B today, so he'll probably
- 40:54Speaker 4: tell you a little bit hopefully that I'm a player's coach.
- 40:58Speaker 4: I value their opinion. We have a leadership council that
- 41:01Speaker 4: I want their opinion on things. I want their voice.
- 41:05Speaker 4: I think that's a big thing right now in college
- 41:07Speaker 4: athletics is you know, you don't want to be a dictator.
- 41:11Speaker 4: You need to have those guys have a voice and
- 41:16Speaker 4: take ownership in the program. And that's why I think
- 41:19Speaker 4: we were successful last year is you know, we gave
- 41:22Speaker 4: them a lot of things and then gave them the
- 41:23Speaker 4: keys and said, you guys got to hold each other
- 41:25Speaker 4: accountable to the standard that.
- 41:27Speaker 7: You guys expect. You know what we expect. But when
- 41:30Speaker 7: your peer can hold you accountable to that same standard
- 41:32Speaker 7: of what you do on the field, what you do
- 41:34Speaker 7: off the field, how you prepare yourself. And our guys
- 41:38Speaker 7: have that right now, and our locker room has really
- 41:41Speaker 7: good culture right now. And I a firm believer that
- 41:44Speaker 7: when you give the guys that ownership and let them
- 41:48Speaker 7: run the team and let them run that locker room,
- 41:50Speaker 7: it gets better and better.
- 41:52Speaker 5: Coach, I'm a huge Cowboys fan, So let's talk about Duce.
- 41:54Speaker 7: Vanno and that fun one to talk about now.
- 41:57Speaker 5: I mean, Deuce was awesome for you guys, and then
- 41:59Speaker 5: when he gets drafted the Cowboys super special.
- 42:01Speaker 7: Of course, the whole bad.
- 42:02Speaker 5: Connection, but he's sitting at the third running back spot.
- 42:07Speaker 7: He's super fast.
- 42:09Speaker 5: Yeah, he's not that big of a guy, but what
- 42:11Speaker 5: can you say about him as a person. And two,
- 42:15Speaker 5: would you ever call Jerry and be like, hey, you've
- 42:18Speaker 5: got to move him up what you need?
- 42:22Speaker 7: Well, we would have played him all the time, you know.
- 42:25Speaker 7: And it's funny because Deuce and his mother sat right
- 42:28Speaker 7: where you're sitting when he was a senior in high school,
- 42:33Speaker 7: big infectious smile, and I said, you're going to be
- 42:36Speaker 7: a dynamite running back for Kansas State and you're not
- 42:39Speaker 7: too small to play, and we're going to build our
- 42:42Speaker 7: program around you, and we're going to build our offense
- 42:44Speaker 7: around you. And he was he lit up, and he said,
- 42:47Speaker 7: I'm coming to k State and that's what we did.
- 42:49Speaker 7: And that's what he did for us. So there's a
- 42:51Speaker 7: role for him and I don't know if it's been
- 42:53Speaker 7: defined yet. I don't ever get a chance to watch
- 42:55Speaker 7: NFL football Sundays, our busiest days. I'll get a highlight
- 43:00Speaker 7: somebody will send me like Julie Sprints had a who
- 43:02Speaker 7: played for US last year, had a strip and created
- 43:05Speaker 7: a turnover last week. I don't get a chance to
- 43:08Speaker 7: watch enough. But if you need me to call Jerry,
- 43:11Speaker 7: find you guys, get his number a lot easier than
- 43:13Speaker 7: I could. We'll give him a call and see if
- 43:15Speaker 7: we can get him on the field a little bit more.
- 43:17Speaker 4: You define yourself as a players coach. Have you always
- 43:20Speaker 4: been a players coach or is that something that you've
- 43:22Speaker 4: transitioned to more of as you've been you know, had
- 43:25Speaker 4: just had more head coaching experience.
- 43:27Speaker 7: Yeah, no, it's it's what I've always tried to be.
- 43:31Speaker 7: I look at it as I was really fortunate to
- 43:34Speaker 7: get a head job at North Dakota State. We won
- 43:36Speaker 7: some games there. I was the d bat coach, I
- 43:39Speaker 7: was the defensive coordinator, and I always had a really
- 43:41Speaker 7: good relationship with the guys, and I always wanted to
- 43:45Speaker 7: be a part of the guy's lives, not just on
- 43:47Speaker 7: the field, but more importantly off the field, see how
- 43:49Speaker 7: they're doing, talk about their families. And then when I
- 43:51Speaker 7: got elevated to head coach, I just said, I'm not
- 43:54Speaker 7: going to change. And I remember one of our players
- 43:58Speaker 7: that had we had at North Kota State. I wore
- 44:02Speaker 7: a suit for a for the first game in the morning,
- 44:06Speaker 7: and it was my first game, and I'll never forget it,
- 44:08Speaker 7: and the kid came up to me and said, you
- 44:11Speaker 7: don't have to do this. Go put your sweats on,
- 44:14Speaker 7: or go put your your polo on, and we're going
- 44:16Speaker 7: to be just great. And I looked at him and
- 44:18Speaker 7: I was like, oh, thank god he said that, because
- 44:20Speaker 7: I felt so uncomfortable.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Uh.
- 44:22Speaker 7: And so I went back to just warning my polo
- 44:25Speaker 7: and my my khakis or sweats on that day or
- 44:29Speaker 7: the next game, and uh, I just I want to
- 44:32Speaker 7: be a part of those guys' lives. And the only
- 44:34Speaker 7: way you can be is by being around him as
- 44:36Speaker 7: much you can, by finding out as much you can,
- 44:39Speaker 7: by joking with them as much you can, by just
- 44:43Speaker 7: being one of the guys. And that's what assistants typically are,
- 44:46Speaker 7: and us head coaches oftentimes have to become CEOs and
- 44:49Speaker 7: all that other stuff, which you still have to do,
- 44:53Speaker 7: but you still have to break away and get in
- 44:55Speaker 7: in the locker room and the training room and weight
- 44:58Speaker 7: room and just you know, dig your heels in and
- 45:01Speaker 7: get to know them.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Let's talk schematically, especially defensively. In the NFL. You're seeing Miami.
- 45:06Speaker 4: You know, they don't have a lot of big guys.
- 45:08Speaker 4: They got a lot of fast guys. Talk about Dawn.
- 45:10Speaker 4: They got a lot of guys that get an open
- 45:11Speaker 4: space and then run if it's you know, Moster, if
- 45:15Speaker 4: it's Tyreek, if it's Waddle. But then now the defenses
- 45:19Speaker 4: are having to change too, and we saw the Patriots
- 45:21Speaker 4: have to play like four or five safeties at one
- 45:23Speaker 4: time to try to keep speed up. What changes are
- 45:25Speaker 4: you seeing in the Big twelve or just in college
- 45:28Speaker 4: football in general? Are you seeing, I'll just speed winning
- 45:31Speaker 4: more at times, like in the linebacker and defensive backs
- 45:34Speaker 4: more than it ever has.
- 45:35Speaker 7: Yeah, without a doubt. You know, you don't run the
- 45:38Speaker 7: old I formation quarterback under center very often at all.
- 45:44Speaker 7: The other thing that's that is taking over college football
- 45:47Speaker 7: that's going to take over the NFL pretty soon as
- 45:49Speaker 7: no huddle, not giving a team a chance to substitute,
- 45:52Speaker 7: so that we're going to put our fastest guys out there,
- 45:55Speaker 7: and you better be able to match those guys. And
- 45:57Speaker 7: sometimes in the past people just match those guys on
- 46:00Speaker 7: third down. Now you've got to match him on first down.
- 46:03Speaker 7: You got to match him on second down. And it's
- 46:06Speaker 7: a skill level of trying to find safeties that are
- 46:10Speaker 7: fast enough or linebackers that are fast enough. But you
- 46:12Speaker 7: also have these tight ends that are six foot seven
- 46:14Speaker 7: two hundred and seventy pounds that can run four or
- 46:17Speaker 7: five that you can't put a corner on because they're
- 46:19Speaker 7: just going to wall them out and box them out.
- 46:21Speaker 7: And you know, I look at the Travis Kelce from
- 46:24Speaker 7: the Chiefs, who can cover him? Well, you know, you
- 46:26Speaker 7: can put a linebacker on him, but he's faster. You
- 46:28Speaker 7: can put a safety or corner, but he's bigger. And
- 46:31Speaker 7: that's what everybody's trying to recruit is the hybrid defensive
- 46:34Speaker 7: players that are fast enough to be able to stuff
- 46:38Speaker 7: the run, but athletic enough to be able to cover
- 46:40Speaker 7: great tight ends and wide outs.
- 46:41Speaker 4: Is it in a penduluming though, where you get so
- 46:44Speaker 4: many hybrids on defense, they're having to stop all of
- 46:46Speaker 4: these offensive playmakers that all of a sudden you're rotating coverage.
- 46:49Speaker 4: You got some pass guys. Well, now all of a sudden,
- 46:51Speaker 4: everybody's trying to stop the wide open pass game. So
- 46:54Speaker 4: you got somebody who's like, let's just run it right
- 46:56Speaker 4: back down their throats and then it slowed. Has it
- 46:58Speaker 4: just a non stop pendleum?
- 47:00Speaker 7: It is a NonStop pendulum. The one thing that will
- 47:03Speaker 7: never change is you better have a quarterback. That's the
- 47:06Speaker 7: thing that will never change whether or not that quarterback
- 47:09Speaker 7: is a dual threat guy like a Lamar Jackson that
- 47:12Speaker 7: can beat you with his arm, beat you with his legs,
- 47:15Speaker 7: or a guy that you know, like Tom Brady was
- 47:17Speaker 7: that's just gonna you know, precision, just carve you up.
- 47:20Speaker 7: You still have to have that quarterback. And uh, that's
- 47:23Speaker 7: the first thing that that we're looking for in recruiting
- 47:26Speaker 7: is every class can we find that quarterback? As well
- 47:29Speaker 7: as when we're when we're scouting teams and stuff, is
- 47:33Speaker 7: how's the quarter Because you can, like you said, you
- 47:35Speaker 7: can put everybody in charge of the past, but if
- 47:37Speaker 7: that kid's just going to run the ball on you
- 47:38Speaker 7: as a quarterback, you're in trouble. And so yeah, it's
- 47:41Speaker 7: a it's a pendulum. That's that. It's offensively as well
- 47:45Speaker 7: as defensively. It's ever changing.
- 47:47Speaker 4: How hard would it be to install the wishbone in
- 47:49Speaker 4: one week and just surprise the crap out of a team.
- 47:52Speaker 7: It would be really, really hard. I believe it would be.
- 47:56Speaker 4: But the student body laugh. I mean easier, but I
- 48:00Speaker 4: thought over I think this whole thing school.
- 48:03Speaker 7: You know what though, but that's not what anybody wants
- 48:05Speaker 7: to see. Then then you know if if the Cowboys
- 48:08Speaker 7: did that, if you said let's let's Cowboys do it,
- 48:11Speaker 7: then the NFL is going to be mad because then
- 48:12Speaker 7: they're not throwing the ball en off.
- 48:14Speaker 4: A one game, like a big one game, like we're
- 48:16Speaker 4: running wishbone, we're running triple option. Well that's the thing
- 48:20Speaker 4: that helmet you go all in coach.
- 48:23Speaker 7: Well, when we were at North Kota State, we had
- 48:25Speaker 7: to play Georgia Southern and they were all triple option.
- 48:28Speaker 7: And then my first year here, we're so excited we
- 48:31Speaker 7: get to go to a bowl game and we get
- 48:33Speaker 7: announced and we get to play Navy, and I'm like, oh,
- 48:36Speaker 7: this is gonna be a lot of fun, you know,
- 48:38Speaker 7: of having to defend triple option and your defensive line
- 48:41Speaker 7: getting cut on every play, and like, hey, we're playing Navy,
- 48:44Speaker 7: and the guy's like hey, great, yeah, so you gotta
- 48:48Speaker 7: be unbelievably disciplined and to know you're going to get
- 48:50Speaker 7: cut all the time. So it's yeah, it's really hard
- 48:53Speaker 7: to defend in and probably equally as hard. You know,
- 48:56Speaker 7: the one rule that changed in college athletics a couple
- 48:59Speaker 7: of college football a couple of years ago as the
- 49:01Speaker 7: cut block. You can't cut people down on the perimeter
- 49:04Speaker 7: anymore like he used to five years ago, three years ago.
- 49:08Speaker 7: And that's where some of those wishbone teams are probably
- 49:11Speaker 7: having a harder time.
- 49:12Speaker 4: Even though wide receivers used to cut people hard, which
- 49:14Speaker 4: they can't do anymore. But they wouldn't even even wide
- 49:16Speaker 4: out run just a tendon tear exactly. You hit it
- 49:22Speaker 4: wrong barely one time.
- 49:23Speaker 7: Yeah, those coupleocks.
- 49:25Speaker 4: That's kind of how Aaron Rodgers ended up tearing his
- 49:28Speaker 4: achilles too.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:30Speaker 7: Yeah, And that's the thing that's so hard right now
- 49:33Speaker 7: with you know, college athletics or college football has changed.
- 49:37Speaker 7: We've gotten better on the targeting, right, I mean we've
- 49:40Speaker 7: used to get targeting and then the kid would have
- 49:43Speaker 7: the walk of shame because they'd throw him out and
- 49:45Speaker 7: you'd have to walk them off, send a support staff member.
- 49:48Speaker 7: Now they at least can stay on the sideline. But
- 49:51Speaker 7: you know, we've taken some of that. But now we're
- 49:53Speaker 7: having more lower body injuries because I can't go high
- 49:57Speaker 7: on you across the middle, so I go low on you,
- 50:00Speaker 7: and and you see some ugly injuries because of it.
- 50:03Speaker 7: And you know, there's that happy medium of hitting between
- 50:07Speaker 7: the knees and the chest, and there's not going to
- 50:09Speaker 7: be any penalty. But you know everybody talks about that.
- 50:12Speaker 7: That's a split second decision whether or not that guy's
- 50:15Speaker 7: coming at me. And if it's a kid that's sixty
- 50:16Speaker 7: five two hundred and fifty pounds, do you really want
- 50:18Speaker 7: to go high on that guy?
- 50:20Speaker 4: ANSWER's no, case you're wondering, I know, I wouldn't think
- 50:23Speaker 4: you will. Our final five questions, I'm going to start
- 50:25Speaker 4: with this one. The rule of a wide open fast offense.
- 50:29Speaker 4: You know how to stop them act hurt? Just grab
- 50:31Speaker 4: your hamstring and get a cramp. We something's got to
- 50:36Speaker 4: change as far as if you get hurt, you grab something,
- 50:38Speaker 4: you cramp like that's a the rest of the series
- 50:40Speaker 4: you're out, what would you suggest to the rules committee?
- 50:44Speaker 7: It's gotten better already, it's gotten a ton better, but
- 50:47Speaker 7: probably just the rest of the series. You know, if
- 50:50Speaker 7: a guy comes out, if it's it's usually when it's
- 50:52Speaker 7: one hundred and four degrees and you're out there for
- 50:54Speaker 7: that tenth play that you could potentially have it happened.
- 50:56Speaker 7: But then the probably should just be the series. You
- 51:00Speaker 7: don't know if it's one more player or more plays.
- 51:03Speaker 4: I mean, you know when they're lying, you know when
- 51:04Speaker 4: they're lying.
- 51:05Speaker 7: Oh, absolutely, yeah. I think everybody. Everybody does. It's bad
- 51:09Speaker 7: when there's two guys down on the same play that they.
- 51:11Speaker 4: Forget who told you, coach.
- 51:15Speaker 5: I remember watching Friday Night Lights or something, and and
- 51:19Speaker 5: there was the part where they're, oh, it's somebody gets
- 51:24Speaker 5: hurt and he and the coaches like get in the room,
- 51:27Speaker 5: shoot it up. You're coming back out. It's like almost
- 51:29Speaker 5: like no choice. When someone does get hurt, do you say, like,
- 51:33Speaker 5: are you hurt?
- 51:33Speaker 1: Like?
- 51:34Speaker 3: What do you tell me?
- 51:35Speaker 5: You're injured? And this is when we work out that's
- 51:37Speaker 5: what he tells me. Are you that kind of like
- 51:39Speaker 5: are you hurt, you're injured? Or are you just like
- 51:40Speaker 5: you decide in your own seat.
- 51:42Speaker 7: No, it's a different world.
- 51:43Speaker 2: Now.
- 51:44Speaker 7: I just go to the trainers and they say, he's out.
- 51:46Speaker 7: We're checking on him, we're getting something, we're retaping him,
- 51:50Speaker 7: we're going in for an X ray. We'll come back,
- 51:52Speaker 7: let you know. And now I just let them tell
- 51:55Speaker 7: me is he going to be back or not? Yep,
- 51:57Speaker 7: he'll be back, coaching, You got three more plays and
- 52:00Speaker 7: him ready and or no, sorry, coach, he's out. Oh
- 52:03Speaker 7: come on, he's not no, you just listen with the trainers,
- 52:06Speaker 7: doe you and move on. So that's become wich. It
- 52:09Speaker 7: should be. We should be out of the conversation on
- 52:12Speaker 7: that whether or not the kid's healthy or not to play.
- 52:15Speaker 4: Do you still take their helmet so they can't you
- 52:17Speaker 4: in the game?
- 52:18Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 52:18Speaker 4: You ever had anyone hurt grab their helmet and go
- 52:20Speaker 4: back in the game and sneak on?
- 52:22Speaker 7: No, I would no, I mean they, I mean they'd
- 52:25Speaker 7: have to grab somebody else's.
- 52:27Speaker 4: I go in different, different numbers.
- 52:29Speaker 7: Different changing your number.
- 52:32Speaker 4: I come out number seventy seven, Like, who is this,
- 52:34Speaker 4: Robbie Jones, guy man good?
- 52:37Speaker 7: I don't know. But if I saw you in seventy
- 52:39Speaker 7: seven playing old line, I'd feel pretty good about our change.
- 52:41Speaker 4: And you should coach, and you should what's the what's
- 52:43Speaker 4: the ceiling here?
- 52:45Speaker 7: Oh boy?
- 52:46Speaker 6: Uh?
- 52:46Speaker 7: Compete for championships?
- 52:47Speaker 2: Uh?
- 52:48Speaker 7: And we feel like if we continue to recruit the
- 52:52Speaker 7: way we have been and continue to get the right
- 52:54Speaker 7: guys and continue to have guys buy in and develop,
- 52:58Speaker 7: compete for championships.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Uh.
- 53:00Speaker 7: Nobody knows. I mean, the landscape of college football keeps
- 53:03Speaker 7: changing with conference realignment and people joining and now beginning
- 53:07Speaker 7: next year, there's going to be twelve teams in the playoff,
- 53:09Speaker 7: and so if you get into that tournament, because I
- 53:13Speaker 7: used to be a part of tournament play in the FCS,
- 53:16Speaker 7: if you get in that tournament, anything can happen.
- 53:18Speaker 4: That's so exciting to me. And the argument often was, well,
- 53:22Speaker 4: you want to keep the value of each game in
- 53:24Speaker 4: college football, but we also love the NFL and there's
- 53:26Speaker 4: value to each game, but also the playoffs are freaking awesome.
- 53:30Speaker 7: Yeah, and there has to be more value to every game.
- 53:34Speaker 7: But if a team slips up or slips up twice,
- 53:37Speaker 7: they ought to still have an opportunity. And that's unfortunate
- 53:40Speaker 7: right now because if a blue blood loses a game,
- 53:43Speaker 7: they're wanting to jump off that team and that team's done.
- 53:47Speaker 7: It takes a while for teams to peak, especially right
- 53:49Speaker 7: now because of the transfer portal teams, players changing teams,
- 53:54Speaker 7: people having new rosters every year essentially or new players
- 53:58Speaker 7: that sometimes it takes you half a season and the
- 54:01Speaker 7: best teams at the end of the season and what
- 54:03Speaker 7: you're trying to get.
- 54:04Speaker 5: Coach, very stressful job you have. How do you get
- 54:07Speaker 5: your mind off football? You have a boat, you got
- 54:09Speaker 5: jet skis, I go.
- 54:11Speaker 7: Play golf, which we should have went and played golf.
- 54:15Speaker 4: We should we should have. Yeah, now you tell us
- 54:17Speaker 4: that because all you had to do is mentioned, maybe
- 54:20Speaker 4: we come last, and since.
- 54:22Speaker 7: It's an open week, we probably could have figured it
- 54:24Speaker 7: out if it weren't an open week. So nosid I do?
- 54:28Speaker 7: I try to go play golf, get my mind off it,
- 54:30Speaker 7: and got a couple of great golf courses around here
- 54:33Speaker 7: that we go out and play. If not, sit in
- 54:35Speaker 7: the back, cook out, jump in the pool, just try
- 54:39Speaker 7: to try to get away from it as best you can.
- 54:41Speaker 5: Do you ever throw your clubs on the team playing
- 54:43Speaker 5: and try to get there a day early and we's
- 54:45Speaker 5: a round in.
- 54:46Speaker 7: No, I don't think that would probably work. They'll probably wonder, oh,
- 54:49Speaker 7: sure you're a player's coach. Now you're just going out?
- 54:52Speaker 2: Can we go too?
- 54:53Speaker 7: A lot of players they want to go with me.
- 54:55Speaker 4: Last question, You talk about the importance of having a
- 54:57Speaker 4: quarterback in every class at least attende to do that.
- 55:00Speaker 4: So let's say that you sign a four or five
- 55:02Speaker 4: star quarterback last year, and now you're trying to recruit me.
- 55:05Speaker 4: I'm another four or five star guy, But I mean
- 55:07Speaker 4: there's this guy one year ahead of me. How in
- 55:10Speaker 4: the world do you get me to come here when
- 55:12Speaker 4: you got a guy in front of me.
- 55:15Speaker 7: A lot of those four and five stars think they're
- 55:16Speaker 7: going to beat everybody out. So that's one positive thing
- 55:19Speaker 7: is now I can beat that guy out. The second
- 55:23Speaker 7: thing is they know they see how the evolution of
- 55:26Speaker 7: football is. Somebody may leave. Also, you know, people get hurt.
- 55:32Speaker 7: You know, every year that I've been here, other than
- 55:34Speaker 7: our first, our quarterback has missed a little bit of time.
- 55:38Speaker 7: So there's always that opportunity. And you know, if you're
- 55:41Speaker 7: still selling the fact that we had in North Kota State,
- 55:44Speaker 7: we had Brock Jensen, who was the all time winning
- 55:47Speaker 7: his quarterback and FCS at one time, and we brought
- 55:51Speaker 7: Carson Wentzon. Carson sat for a couple of years, and
- 55:53Speaker 7: then Carson won a couple championships, and then we had
- 55:56Speaker 7: Easton Stick come in and Easton Stick ended up being
- 55:58Speaker 7: the all time winning his quarterback n FCS football and
- 56:01Speaker 7: behind him was Trey Lance we brought in. So we
- 56:03Speaker 7: brought in uh the next guy every time that they
- 56:08Speaker 7: knew that their opportunity would come, and when they had
- 56:11Speaker 7: that opportunity. With the type of offense we run and
- 56:13Speaker 7: same thing here with the type of offense that that
- 56:15Speaker 7: we run. When I get my shot and I make
- 56:18Speaker 7: the most of it, it's going to give me that
- 56:19Speaker 7: opportunity to play at the next level. Coach, thanks for
- 56:21Speaker 7: the time, absolutely, Thanks for coming to Manhattan and Kansas.
- 56:25Speaker 4: This this feels like where I come from. I think
- 56:28Speaker 4: that's why I root for Kansas State and and like
- 56:30Speaker 4: my parallel universe of Kansas State to come from. I'm
- 56:34Speaker 4: from Arkansas's all we had. It's all we had was
- 56:37Speaker 4: University of Arkansas. And like we hated Texas, I mentioned
- 56:40Speaker 4: that earlier. I still hae Texas. We heard that, and
- 56:42Speaker 4: it's like now I hate Kansas too. I'm be honest
- 56:44Speaker 4: with your coach, and so it makes me love you
- 56:47Speaker 4: even more.
- 56:48Speaker 7: Okay, well we appreciate you guys. All right, there we go,
- 56:51Speaker 7: and have you come.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Back for the game.
- 56:53Speaker 7: Man, you will get you a spot, all right.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Thank you, coach.

- 58:09Speaker 2: Man, Hey, what's going on bro? How are you?
- 58:12Speaker 4: I'm really good. I was super pumped when I saw
- 58:14Speaker 4: that I was going to talk to you, mostly because
- 58:16Speaker 4: it's been crazy to.
- 58:18Speaker 3: Me over the last few years.
- 58:19Speaker 4: How it was kind of seen like betting and talking
- 58:21Speaker 4: about betting or mentioning a line anywhere that more than
- 58:25Speaker 4: ten people could hear or see you as like, oh,
- 58:27Speaker 4: don't do that. And now it is just this massive
- 58:30Speaker 4: everybody wants to talk about it, and here you are,
- 58:33Speaker 4: and you've kind of you know, cornered or had the
- 58:35Speaker 4: market cornered for a little bit. Isn't it crazy to
- 58:37Speaker 4: see how much this has grown in two years?
- 58:39Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 58:40Speaker 8: Yeah, the the money thrown around is kind of crazy,
- 58:46Speaker 8: but it's it's I I I yeah, from what you've done, Yes,
- 58:54Speaker 8: for sure.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Like I started in radio.
- 58:55Speaker 8: And it was kind of always looked down upon and
- 58:58Speaker 8: stuff like that, But when I look at what like
- 59:01Speaker 8: it was just always something that I looked at when
- 59:04Speaker 8: I was doing my analysis of say college football, you
- 59:07Speaker 8: know like that It's just that's what it was.
- 59:11Speaker 4: I was at a charity event and I was speaking,
- 59:14Speaker 4: and it was a deal where we're, you know, trying
- 59:16Speaker 4: to help this community to raise money for a bunch
- 59:18Speaker 4: of kids that needed a gym and food. And I
- 59:21Speaker 4: was sitting with a pastor and he was like, Hey,
- 59:23Speaker 4: what's the line? I swear to you, I'm not exaggerating,
- 59:28Speaker 4: And it was one of those full circle moments where
- 59:31Speaker 4: it's like, Okay, betting is now not just something that
- 59:34Speaker 4: I enjoy and little nuances that I like to see,
- 59:37Speaker 4: but it's like full pop culture where it's not just
- 59:40Speaker 4: like a sin. If you're betting, I guess because it's legal.
- 59:44Speaker 4: And so that's what makes being able to have this
- 59:46Speaker 4: conversation so cool that a pastor asked me a line
- 59:48Speaker 4: for a game.
- 59:49Speaker 8: And that's that's where I'm different in the Northeast. I
- 59:53Speaker 8: grew up going to Saratoga bus trips with the pastor
- 59:56Speaker 8: of the church.
- 59:59Speaker 4: So well in the South, in the rural South, yeah,
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: rur right just down there. Yeah, I'm curious about kind
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: of the genesis that Bad Beats where where that show
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: actually we're starting right now, like oh yeah we're oh.
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: Yeah, we're on, Oh we're on yeah, Oh yeah. I
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: don't have a good Yeah. I don't have a good voice, Steve.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: I don't have it like a radio No.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: I didn't know if there was like a three two one,
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: all right go or all right we're in it.
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, we're in It's That's one of my weaknesses, Steve,
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: is that I don't only sound like somebody good.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: On the radio. I just talk.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: But same with you, like you have a very natural presentation.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: And with bad yeah we're on, we're on, right, we're
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: what's working?
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: I guess? Yeah?
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: With bad bad beats? Where did that come from? Did
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: somebody have a really bad beat? And they're like, this
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: has got to be a reality show and then it
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: turns into this what happened there?
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: No, that's uh, that's that's a question that gets asked
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: a lot, and Scott deserves all the credit. We started
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: old radio show scp Mari Solo, you know mid Days
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: back in back in godwy Ten, I believe, and you know,
- 1:01:00Speaker 8: Scott and I got together because you know, I was
- 1:01:05Speaker 8: Ryan's producer for college game Day and on radio side,
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: so we would travel everywhere with game Day.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: We'd come back Monday.
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: Ryan would do the show with Scott for their Monday
- 1:01:14Speaker 8: through Friday and we would go in pre show meeting
- 1:01:16Speaker 8: bs about the whole game, you know games, what happened
- 1:01:18Speaker 8: this week. And then when I took over, Scott wanted
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: to try Bad Beats on the radio and we did it.
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: We got emails, I mean, everybody was.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: In on it.
- 1:01:27Speaker 8: It just didn't resonate because you need the video, you
- 1:01:32Speaker 8: need the footage, right, And that's what I like, I said,
- 1:01:35Speaker 8: I give Scott all the credit because when we came
- 1:01:37Speaker 8: over to TV, he's like, Hey, you're coming with me.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I'm doing my.
- 1:01:40Speaker 8: Own Sports Center show. We're doing Bad Beats. You're gonna
- 1:01:43Speaker 8: be at the desk. And I'm like, what are you
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: talking about. I've never done a second of TV in
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: my life before. And sure enough we go out. I'll
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: never forget the first night it's Labor Day. We follow
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: Ohio State Virginia Tech. It's that, you know, Labor Day
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: college foot game. Scott's first show, and our pre show
- 1:02:02Speaker 8: meeting's like, all right, what are we gonna do for this?
- 1:02:05Speaker 8: And we dig up. Oh man, it was Colorado State.
- 1:02:08Speaker 8: I think it's Savannah State. We didn't even have the
- 1:02:12Speaker 8: feet of the game. We webscraped it from Colorado State's website.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: And that was our first bad beat.
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: But it's a team that was down by forty five
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: getting forty one, and they haven't scored all day, and
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: they get this drive where they fumble, recover penalty in
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: their favor and miraculously score against Colorado State's fifth stringers
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: and boom, there we go and it takes off and
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: it resonates because everybody's had one, right, everybody's had multiple.
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: I had Wisconsin the other night. I had an unbelievable
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: I was out in Vegas for the Elite A. I
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: had an unbelievable weekend. I'm leaving Tuesday night, I'm like,
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: all right, I'm going to test my waters and take
- 1:02:51Speaker 8: it over in a Wisconsin game. And sure enough, they
- 1:02:54Speaker 8: go score us the last nine and a half minutes.
- 1:02:57Speaker 8: And that's what I had my I think I went
- 1:02:59Speaker 8: thirteen and No, that would have made me thirteen and two.
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: I went twelve and three on the weekend.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: But everybody has it because they stick with you. They
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: when you're when you're gambling. As much as you know
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: people do, there's ones that just stick out, and when
- 1:03:15Speaker 8: you're in the moment, you know what, what can beat me?
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Here?
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: What do I have to get to to get the
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: win here, whether it's a total or a right side.
- 1:03:25Speaker 8: So I just think everybody's experienced it in that gambling side.
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: But the other crazy thing is we get so many
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: notes now on social media. It's like, I don't gamble,
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: but I still can't get over that happen in bad beats.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Why do you do it?
- 1:03:39Speaker 8: I'm like, well, that's another conversation because you got to
- 1:03:42Speaker 8: be sick in the head to lay a couple of
- 1:03:44Speaker 8: shekels on a game. But sometimes that's what makes it fun.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: I'm saying, find when you talk about the Vegas Shop
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: because I was in Vegas two for the Sweet sixteen,
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: in the Elite eight, because I went to watch ARCon.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: Really yeah, I went to watch Arkansas play. It wasn't
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: not it was not pretty, but I lost every game.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: I don't know what. You must know a lot more
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: than I do, because I seem to lose every freaking
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: game that whole weekend because they all were coming out
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: of nowhere. I felt, so, what's what's the magic secret here?
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: Then what I try and do is when the bracket
- 1:04:12Speaker 8: comes out, I'll fill one out, okay right away, and
- 1:04:16Speaker 8: then I'll just have that as a basis. But what
- 1:04:18Speaker 8: I also try and do is go against what I
- 1:04:22Speaker 8: think the public's gonna be. So perfect example, I go
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: up to the Big East Tournament the week before, you
- 1:04:29Speaker 8: know that, that conference tournament week, and I watched Marquette
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: and I'm like, wow, you know, pretty impressive.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Everybody's on them.
- 1:04:35Speaker 8: They ended up winning the tournament, beat Yukon, beat you know,
- 1:04:39Speaker 8: roll Xavier in the in the title game, and I'm like,
- 1:04:42Speaker 8: that's a team on a goal against. Because I think
- 1:04:44Speaker 8: everybody sees the Big East Tournament, bright lights, big city,
- 1:04:47Speaker 8: great conference. But I just Thursday more, Thursday afternoon, I'm there,
- 1:04:53Speaker 8: Saint John's has the ball in the air twice at
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: the end of regulation, at the end of overtime, that
- 1:04:57Speaker 8: ball goes in, Marquette loses, and this whole narrative of
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: them r QUT's the hottest team in the country is gone.
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: So I saw that firsthand. I'm like, they are gettable.
- 1:05:06Speaker 8: This all this stuff is is a little bit of
- 1:05:09Speaker 8: nonsense to me, because it is the NCAA tournament. Look
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: at the final four. We have anybody who can beat anybody.
- 1:05:14Speaker 8: So what I've done is try and go against that
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: Duke was another one. I'm like, I watched the a
- 1:05:18Speaker 8: shcc oh, I'm a Duke fan. They're not that good.
- 1:05:21Speaker 8: I didn't like the matchup against Earl Roberts. I definitely
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: didn't like it if they got to Tennessee, so that
- 1:05:27Speaker 8: happens there now. Yukon was the one that I was
- 1:05:31Speaker 8: in on, but I had to see it first because
- 1:05:34Speaker 8: that's a coaching staff. I grew up there. I know
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: what it's all about. I know the pressure that was
- 1:05:39Speaker 8: on that coaching staff. They had won an NCAA tournament game,
- 1:05:43Speaker 8: coming in as a staff at Yukon, going in a
- 1:05:45Speaker 8: sennseate tournament and then look on the other side, it's
- 1:05:48Speaker 8: Rick Betino, the best tournament coach there is.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: And that was the game for me.
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: Once they got by that, I rode Yukon the whole
- 1:05:56Speaker 8: way through because they have everything.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: They'll have a great point guard, but they have everything
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: you want.
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: They come in at waves, They're superb physically, they got bigs.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: They could defend their numbers.
- 1:06:05Speaker 8: You know, if people want to look at the analytics
- 1:06:07Speaker 8: efficiency wise, defensively, offensively, they're great there. So that's what
- 1:06:11Speaker 8: I just try and go ahead a lot of times
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: it doesn't work out and my thing is up in
- 1:06:15Speaker 8: flames and it is a bad march, and I'll scale
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: back a little bit. But when I started pressing, you know,
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: I wasn't that big on in the Sweet sixteen, I
- 1:06:23Speaker 8: thought Alabama was getable by San Diego State because I
- 1:06:26Speaker 8: looked at that road. That was the last team I
- 1:06:28Speaker 8: thought that could maybe match up with them physically. Houston
- 1:06:31Speaker 8: saw them in person a couple of weeks ago at
- 1:06:33Speaker 8: East Carolina.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Love them, but.
- 1:06:36Speaker 8: I thought a couple of years ago they had a
- 1:06:38Speaker 8: better team, maybe even last year's team if they had
- 1:06:40Speaker 8: Sasser was better. They didn't blow me away, and Miami
- 1:06:43Speaker 8: was as dangerous there was. And Miami and Yukon were
- 1:06:46Speaker 8: the team that I rode into the ground sweet sixteen
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: in the Elite eight.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: So we had a good weekend.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: A lot of my friends will be like, hey man,
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: you went all the time, and I'm like, bro, you
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: don't even know. I don't reach out and be like,
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: can you believe I lost this bet? And so there's
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: this miss there's it's almost like a mystery. Oh he
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: means the greatest bet giver ever. Do you feel like
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: people feel like you win all the time, even though
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: you have a bad beat show. Are they like Stanford
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: c you have all the answers.
- 1:07:10Speaker 8: No, I do daily Wager show on on ESPN, and uh,
- 1:07:14Speaker 8: there's plenty of time. Like when you're this is the
- 1:07:17Speaker 8: other thing I say. If you're telling me you bet
- 1:07:19Speaker 8: three like NFL Sundays, right, I don't. I'm not a
- 1:07:22Speaker 8: big NFL guy. I think it's the hardest thing to
- 1:07:24Speaker 8: the world to handicap.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:07:26Speaker 8: But if you're telling me you bet five NFL games
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: every Sunday for the year and you tell me you win,
- 1:07:31Speaker 8: I'll call you a liar. There's no way. I don't
- 1:07:35Speaker 8: see how you could do that the volume. Uh, pick
- 1:07:39Speaker 8: your spots maybe, But when you're telling me you're betting
- 1:07:43Speaker 8: four or five games a day for an extended amount
- 1:07:46Speaker 8: of time, you got your you're building your own casino,
- 1:07:50Speaker 8: I would think, because that's that's the size of those buildings.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: That that though, that that's where that money is. Uh.
- 1:07:56Speaker 8: And that's why those buildings are so win because they're
- 1:07:58Speaker 8: taking their shot that you are not going to do that,
- 1:08:00Speaker 8: and they get everybody else involved.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: So No, I do not win all the time. It's
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: been a good run for sure.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: Do you feel pressure to be right though?
- 1:08:09Speaker 8: Oh yeah, I mean there's there's Scott and I do
- 1:08:12Speaker 8: all the time. He does Winners on Thursday Night. I
- 1:08:14Speaker 8: do a podcast during college football season and on ESPN
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: dot com where I give college football picks.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: And you know, they moved the timeline off.
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: I think it was like Wednesdays, we got to have
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: it in by and so there'll be sometimes like I'll
- 1:08:28Speaker 8: come off of a game or I won't change it
- 1:08:31Speaker 8: just because I put my name on it. But those names,
- 1:08:34Speaker 8: those picks that have my name on it, I care
- 1:08:36Speaker 8: about those in any dollar amount I have on a game.
- 1:08:39Speaker 8: Those those are what people are coming at you about.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:08:43Speaker 8: You can't read all your social media or else you
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: lose your mind because it's a cesspool and the grounds
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: for negativity. But there is some good stuff out there,
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: and I appreciate the positive people because we can find
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: negative people anywhere. But yeah, there is pressure, for sure.
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: I mean putting you on because we've done well. I've
- 1:09:02Speaker 8: I've had a really really good run. But yeah, the
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: pressure the games that I'm watching or when I'm in
- 1:09:08Speaker 8: the moment that I have my name on it for
- 1:09:11Speaker 8: a pick, then you know they put the screen stavor,
- 1:09:13Speaker 8: so he says, this is his pick. Those are the
- 1:09:15Speaker 8: ones that still get the blood float and the itches going.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: For sure, what's the longest parlay you've hit? How many games?
- 1:09:22Speaker 8: Oh, I'm not really a parlay guy. Like that's the
- 1:09:28Speaker 8: one thing you talked about with all this nuance in
- 1:09:30Speaker 8: the last two years, like that that candy they throw
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: out you what they call the SGP the single game parlays.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: You can have them. You can have them.
- 1:09:40Speaker 8: It's hard to scroll away, Like now I forgot which
- 1:09:43Speaker 8: one I logged in I got back from Vegas.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, let me see what we got
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: for Final four.
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: I think it was even Major League Baseball dabbling in that,
- 1:09:51Speaker 8: and I'm like, whoa, I don't need a five game
- 1:09:54Speaker 8: single game parlay the opening day major.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: League Baseball to get the day going.
- 1:10:00Speaker 8: But a man maybe like a three or four team er,
- 1:10:04Speaker 8: nothing nothing crazy.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess if you don't do them all the time,
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: like I'm an idiot in about once every month or so,
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: you know, you do like a night Well, I also
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: eat up like the chum they're throwing out where they're
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: they'll retweet somebody to hit like for a dollar a
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: fourteen gamer and made a thousand bucks, And I'm like,
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: why not?
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: What if I put five or ten on it? But
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: uh yeah, the eddie. Do you do a lot of parlays?
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: I do?
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: And my I hear you talking about the NFL, and
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: I'm the dude that picks every single NFL game from
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: Thursday all the way to Monday and put a dollar
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: on it, and I've never gotten close.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Now he's well, here's what I'll say about parlay's.
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: Okay, I grew up in an era or an area
- 1:10:45Speaker 8: of you. You bet on credit, right, like you called
- 1:10:49Speaker 8: your guy and you said, all right, I want this.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: So it was kind of dangerous.
- 1:10:55Speaker 8: And I've seen you know, there's horror stories of people
- 1:10:57Speaker 8: looking for people that owe money. I will say, with
- 1:11:00Speaker 8: these apps, and now with the youngsters, I see college
- 1:11:02Speaker 8: kids firing on these parlas all the time. Their money's up,
- 1:11:06Speaker 8: you know, like they there, their money is paid and
- 1:11:08Speaker 8: the only way they're getting back is if they win.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: So I will say, as far.
- 1:11:11Speaker 8: As like the gambling and the problems and what it causes,
- 1:11:14Speaker 8: that's that half of that is gone because the money
- 1:11:17Speaker 8: they put up is already on the account, and therefore
- 1:11:21Speaker 8: they can't lose more than say calling your guy and
- 1:11:25Speaker 8: losing and say all right, I'm gonna.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Double up on the next game that doesn't come in,
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: I'm gonna double up on.
- 1:11:29Speaker 8: The next game, and then good luck. Fine to me
- 1:11:31Speaker 8: if you can't fight, if I don't hit any uh.
- 1:11:33Speaker 8: So that that's the one thing I will say is
- 1:11:35Speaker 8: that the money is it's like going to the casino.
- 1:11:37Speaker 8: Like you give your money, you get your chips, all right.
- 1:11:40Speaker 8: The only way to get them back is your chips.
- 1:11:41Speaker 8: You know, you put your chips back in to get
- 1:11:43Speaker 8: your money. So that's the one thing I will say
- 1:11:45Speaker 8: with these apps that I think uh is refraining a
- 1:11:48Speaker 8: lot of the problems for gambling that we've heard about
- 1:11:51Speaker 8: in the past.
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd spent time talking with.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: Political folks, governors, you know, they had me lobbying a
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: bit where I would go, hey, look, it's not exactly
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: the same as it used to be. And also here's
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: why it's beneficial. You got to have a smartphone, you
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: got to have an account, or you also got so
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: there are all these layers that it don't make it perfect.
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: It don't make it perfect, but it's not the same
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: as what it used to be and I would literally
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: sit with governors and say, don't just say no, because
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: people have always said no. And we're starting to see
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: a lot of states now legalize it. But how even
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: on the ballot in California and did not get passed,
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: which blew me away.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: I can't. I can't believe it. I can't.
- 1:12:32Speaker 8: Like I've I've talked I'm the same way, I've had
- 1:12:35Speaker 8: people approach me. I've had you know, political people, and
- 1:12:38Speaker 8: they've they've gotten into the point where they just bring
- 1:12:42Speaker 8: Sayle's who was one of the first New Jersey, Like
- 1:12:45Speaker 8: New Jersey came in the first of the month, they
- 1:12:47Speaker 8: were posting like multiple millions that they were making off gambling.
- 1:12:51Speaker 8: I'm like, what's wrong with free money? Who doesn't want
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: free money? And these states talk about the debt that
- 1:12:57Speaker 8: they all have. I'm like, here's the here's maybe a
- 1:12:59Speaker 8: little gradual help towards that.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: It's free money.
- 1:13:03Speaker 8: Get the apps going, it's a sign of a paper
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: and you got money coming in like crazy.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: And now you see all these states posting the earnings
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: and the makings that they're winning off a gamble.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: You're gonna sell cigarettes, but you're not gonna let us
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: put ten bucks on a game that we already have
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: the money in the account.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: Yes, it's ridiculous.
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: Final question, So, as a high school ball player, one
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: of the best, I mean, recruited so highly, but it
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: was late nineties. You and I are around the same age.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: Whenever you hear what these kids are going through now
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: as they're being recruited, like what was it like in
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: ninety six versus what you hear about what it's like now.
- 1:13:36Speaker 8: Well, the social media factor is totally different, you know,
- 1:13:40Speaker 8: like I don't even know how they keep up with
- 1:13:42Speaker 8: the rules whether I could contact you on social media.
- 1:13:45Speaker 8: You know, back in ninety six, it was one call
- 1:13:47Speaker 8: a week. Once I got to I think it was
- 1:13:50Speaker 8: August first. August first they could call you, and then
- 1:13:54Speaker 8: that was that was really hard because everybody is selling
- 1:13:57Speaker 8: you the best thing. Everybody is treating you like their
- 1:13:59Speaker 8: best friend, and everybody's saying you're the best player in
- 1:14:02Speaker 8: the country, and you in these months, you know, in
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: the month of weekly phone calls, you build up these
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: these relationships with the coaches, and then you got to
- 1:14:12Speaker 8: tell them no. And it's really hard as a seventeen
- 1:14:15Speaker 8: year old kid being in a thing for a first
- 1:14:18Speaker 8: time where you're getting treated like a god and you've
- 1:14:22Speaker 8: got to tell somebody no that that was really hard.
- 1:14:24Speaker 8: And now with the social media, I feel like, you know,
- 1:14:27Speaker 8: they could type in something's a lot easier than a
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: face to face, right, or even a phone conversation. So
- 1:14:32Speaker 8: I do think that is the problem I have is
- 1:14:35Speaker 8: you know, these guys going on their visits now, they
- 1:14:37Speaker 8: take a picture in every single uniform they go to
- 1:14:39Speaker 8: and I'm like catching like, oh hey, this guy committed there.
- 1:14:42Speaker 8: Oh no, he just took a visit and wanted to
- 1:14:44Speaker 8: see how he looked in the uniform. So they bring
- 1:14:47Speaker 8: on a lot of stuff to themselves. But that's that's
- 1:14:51Speaker 8: the day and age we're in here, right, everybody's selling
- 1:14:53Speaker 8: their brand. The nil is real, so it's it's different.
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: I'm not a big self promoting guy. I kind of
- 1:15:01Speaker 8: like to just you know, lay low and do my
- 1:15:03Speaker 8: own work and let the results play out. But these
- 1:15:06Speaker 8: guys get out in front of it. So I think
- 1:15:09Speaker 8: the everyday essence of it is what's different to me,
- 1:15:12Speaker 8: And that's what these kids are brought up in now.
- 1:15:15Speaker 8: And now I say, you know, I've always said when
- 1:15:18Speaker 8: I got out of college, I didn't have a plan.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: I didn't know what I wanted to do.
- 1:15:21Speaker 8: I thought I could play football forever, and they you know,
- 1:15:25Speaker 8: that's a harsh reality. So whatever I try and talk to,
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: whether I go back to Stanford and talk or go
- 1:15:30Speaker 8: to talk to college, like, you gotta have a plan, man,
- 1:15:32Speaker 8: Like what's your major?
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: You know, what are your credit situation? Have you done
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: any internships? Uh?
- 1:15:37Speaker 8: And the other thing is like sports media. I always say,
- 1:15:40Speaker 8: get get on camera, get on tape. Uh, you know,
- 1:15:44Speaker 8: be on air as much as possible, because that's the
- 1:15:47Speaker 8: first thing they want. And if you're one of these
- 1:15:49Speaker 8: guys like, hey, I got a degree, all right, what
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: would you do? What kind of experience do you have?
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: And they say, oh I didn't, I didn't.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: Have any like that.
- 1:15:57Speaker 8: You're You're all the way down the ladder with that
- 1:16:00Speaker 8: with that response. So I just, you know, get an experience.
- 1:16:03Speaker 8: But these kids, I mean, everything is at your fingertips
- 1:16:06Speaker 8: and it's it's fascinating to play out.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: But I always say, just try and have a plan.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: I'm a big fans sports center commentator, second producer on
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: the midnight Sports Center with SVP on Bad Beats, We're
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: in the world is an SVP. I mean it's all
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: over at Stanford, Steve eighty two to appreciate the time.
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: One quick follow up, who was the hardest no? Who
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: do you have to say no to? That was the
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: hardest no?
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: Well, it came down to Stanford in North Carolina.
- 1:16:29Speaker 8: Mac Brown was the guy at North Carolina. So as
- 1:16:33Speaker 8: good of a politician Mac is, and the selling he
- 1:16:37Speaker 8: can do and just being the overall the aura of
- 1:16:40Speaker 8: mac Brown telling him no was pretty hard. But I
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: will say he I did catch him in a lie
- 1:16:45Speaker 8: because a year later he went to Texas, so you
- 1:16:48Speaker 8: got him.
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: Okay, Well I think we're ready to start with the
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: interview now are you guys? Yeah, we're good. Catch up here.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: Three two?
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: I Hey, Steve, thanks for the time, man, Really appreciate
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: you A big fan.
- 1:16:58Speaker 8: Hey, I appreciate you guys thinking of me, having me on.
- 1:17:00Speaker 8: Continued success with all the guys you do. It's unbelievable
- 1:17:03Speaker 8: see what you guys have built. So that's a credit
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: to you guys. Man, Thank you for doing your thing.
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: Have a good day. Hey, thanks for listening.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Man.

- 1:17:15Speaker 4: Twenty five whistles.
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: Thank you guys.
