- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks for having us or thanks for joining us on
- 0:02Speaker 1: the radio. Thanks all the folks here and the iHeart music.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Loune for coming upward to see Gino in person. We
- 0:07Speaker 1: try to do this once a year with Coach Moore,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Coach Early and now Gino when we appreciate Geno's time.
- 0:13Speaker 1: By the way, Gino will do. I think seven of
- 0:15Speaker 1: your remaining nine shows at Cafe or in Manchester, so
- 0:18Speaker 1: feel free to come on down. I think the first
- 0:20Speaker 1: one at Cafe Aro is November twenty fifth, if I'm
- 0:23Speaker 1: not mistaken, that'll be our next coaches show because you're
- 0:26Speaker 1: busy as all heck coming up here.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Schedule starts Tuesday in Annapolis.
- 0:30Speaker 1: You play Louisville, Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan, Utah. We
- 0:35Speaker 1: should get into USF because Jose is no longer the coach.
- 0:38Speaker 1: You'll be coaching Page Becker's and the pros USC IOWA
- 0:41Speaker 1: Notre Dame, Tennessee. That's a pretty good non league schedule
- 0:45Speaker 1: that you got, and most of them are ranked in
- 0:47Speaker 1: the preseason seven of the tenor currently in the preseason
- 0:51Speaker 1: top twenty.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I think they must have made that schedule when I
- 0:54Speaker 3: was in Greece with Panderas over there.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah. I heard you spend ten days there.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a really difficult non conference
- 1:07Speaker 3: schedule for sure. And we got some great home games.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I mean, you know, really really really good home games.
- 1:13Speaker 3: But you know, our kids like playing these games, so
- 1:16Speaker 3: you have to play them, you know, And there's you know,
- 1:22Speaker 3: financial factor now, you know, you've got to play games
- 1:24Speaker 3: to make money. You know. I got to pay these guys,
- 1:30Speaker 3: got to pay them, you know. And then you got
- 1:32Speaker 3: to beg them to run fast.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You gotta beg them to run fast, kidd me. I
- 1:42Speaker 2: thought effort wasn't coaching.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I bet if I put one hundred dollar abill at
- 1:45Speaker 3: the end of the court, they'd run fast.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, what are your thoughts on Jose taking
- 1:53Speaker 2: the job in the w NBA GO. I think it's great.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I think it's great. I talk with them today as
- 1:57Speaker 3: a matter of fact, And you know, we've had a
- 2:00Speaker 3: long relationship since he since the day he got the
- 2:04Speaker 3: South Florida job, and he said to me we were
- 2:07Speaker 3: in California. I'll never forget. We were having lunch and
- 2:10Speaker 3: he got the job at South Florida and we had
- 2:13Speaker 3: Diana on our team and he said, I want you
- 2:15Speaker 3: to come to South Florida. I want you to I
- 2:18Speaker 3: want to play you guys at South Florida. I want
- 2:19Speaker 3: to kind of kickstart my program. December of three. Yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 3: December of three, and we went down and we played them.
- 2:27Speaker 3: So we've known each other forever. And it's a fantastic guy.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Really smart, really really smart offensive coach, does a lot
- 2:38Speaker 3: of international recruiting and just great communicator. I think he's
- 2:47Speaker 3: going to be you know, I think he's going to
- 2:49Speaker 3: be great for Page and for that team.
- 2:53Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Any I know video review is in that you get
- 2:57Speaker 1: the challenge this year. Are there any other significant rule
- 2:59Speaker 1: chae that the fans should be aware of?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Not that.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Oh again, in an effort to show the players that
- 3:10Speaker 3: we care about them and trying to grow them up
- 3:13Speaker 3: and you know, make sure that they turn into responsible adults.
- 3:17Speaker 3: They can now play with their shirttails hanging out. That's
- 3:21Speaker 3: a new rule because we're in this for their well
- 3:25Speaker 3: being and tucking your shirt in is kind of like
- 3:29Speaker 3: an infringing, infringing on their private rights. We're stifling their
- 3:35Speaker 3: creativity if we let them play with if we make
- 3:38Speaker 3: them play with their shirttails.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Tuck them.
- 3:42Speaker 3: The NBA is the most sophisticated, most expensive, highest generating
- 3:48Speaker 3: sport other than maybe your league soccer, you know, like whatever.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Around the world. They have more dress code rules than
- 3:56Speaker 3: college women's basketball or men's basketball. Insanity.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Do you see Gatis's travel.
- 4:02Speaker 3: You're paying guys forty million dollars and you tell them
- 4:05Speaker 3: you can't wear those socks. They don't. They don't do it.
- 4:09Speaker 3: They don't do it because it's against the code. Now
- 4:13Speaker 3: you got to do women's basketball or any basketball, and
- 4:16Speaker 3: they're afraid that they're gonna get sued if a kid
- 4:18Speaker 3: has to play with their shirttail in. Really I should
- 4:24Speaker 3: sue them. These Oh, these are free. I don't wear
- 4:35Speaker 3: anything I have to pay for. You know, it's crazy
- 4:40Speaker 3: when you don't have anything. I grew up like I
- 4:43Speaker 3: didn't have anything. Nobody gives you a damn thing. Then
- 4:46Speaker 3: when you can afford to buy anything, they give you
- 4:48Speaker 3: anything you want. That's a screwed up country.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I gotta tell you.
- 4:53Speaker 1: By the way, during one of the breaks, somebody asked,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I think it was Nick, asked about Gino's record twelve
- 4:59Speaker 1: fifty one sixty three twelve hundred and fifty wins one
- 5:04Speaker 1: hundred and sixty three losses in forty years.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And half of those losses.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Carl Adamick mentioned this, I think in the first ten
- 5:17Speaker 1: or twelve years of your career.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I think half of.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Those losses occurred first ten or twelve years.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, something like that. That's crazy to think, isn't it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I mean, you average thirty wins a year. I mean
- 5:31Speaker 1: we'd mentioned this before the show started, what they've done
- 5:34Speaker 1: over the last thirty years. I mean you mentioned the
- 5:36Speaker 1: thirty years in a row of thirty plus of sweet sixteens,
- 5:40Speaker 1: all but three elite eights, and then twenty four final fours.
- 5:44Speaker 1: You talk about consistency over that time in the course
- 5:47Speaker 1: of two concents are our GENO and CD.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But that's really hard to do.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I mean, we went almost a decade while at the
- 5:54Speaker 1: National Championship, but funny, we kept showing up at final fours.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I mean that's hard to do.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yeah, But I've also said that the only thing worse
- 6:04Speaker 3: than losing is winning all the time, because then you're
- 6:10Speaker 3: not allowed to lose. Yeah, It's like you're not allowed
- 6:13Speaker 3: to lose anymore. So when you win all the time,
- 6:15Speaker 3: you're not allowed to lose. You lose, and it's like
- 6:17Speaker 3: what happened? What did you do wrong? Like the other
- 6:21Speaker 3: team's never allowed to win anymore? Because you want so
- 6:24Speaker 3: much in so many years that when you do lose,
- 6:27Speaker 3: everybody wants to know what happened.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I told you.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I mean, I told you the story about when I
- 6:33Speaker 3: was with for a walk. Guy pulled up next to
- 6:35Speaker 3: me in the truck and I have my hoodie on,
- 6:38Speaker 3: so nobody would recognize me, but you were. You were
- 6:40Speaker 3: hoodies and the guy. And the guy stopped and he
- 6:43Speaker 3: goes hey, coach, And I go, hey, how are you?
- 6:46Speaker 3: And he said, tough one. We just lost at the
- 6:48Speaker 3: buzzer against Mississippi State. You know, we want one hundred
- 6:51Speaker 3: and eleven in a row. He goes, hey, coach, how
- 6:54Speaker 3: you doing. I say, Hi, how you? He goes, hey,
- 6:58Speaker 3: just wondering about the game the other night. I said, yeah,
- 7:02Speaker 3: what about it? He goes what happened? I have a
- 7:08Speaker 3: very good memory when it comes to That's how I
- 7:09Speaker 3: got through school. I paid attention and I said, what
- 7:12Speaker 3: do you mean? He goes, well, what happened? I go
- 7:15Speaker 3: we lost? He said, yeah, I know, I know. He's
- 7:18Speaker 3: just like why the freshman went ready. The seniors were
- 7:21Speaker 3: a little bit, you know, over confident. I said, excuse me.
- 7:26Speaker 3: He goes, yeah, you know, I said, they scored more
- 7:30Speaker 3: points than we did. We won one hundred and eleven
- 7:34Speaker 3: games in a row, and now we don't win. And
- 7:37Speaker 3: you want to know why he looked at you. Well,
- 7:43Speaker 3: I didn't mean it like that. I said, what do
- 7:45Speaker 3: you do? He goes, I'm a reverend. I said, no, wonder,
- 7:53Speaker 3: nobody goes to church anyway. I go, like, can you
- 8:00Speaker 3: having the goal? After one hundred and eleven wins in
- 8:02Speaker 3: a row? They ask me what happened? Here?
- 8:05Speaker 2: You go?
- 8:05Speaker 1: All right, we got one more break to get in
- 8:07Speaker 1: before the top of the hour. Gino did something fun
- 8:10Speaker 1: this past summer. And perhaps you watched Hell's Kitchen that
- 8:13Speaker 1: was on last week. We'll talk about that and we
- 8:15Speaker 1: come back. It's the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Stay with us.
