- 0:26Our current series is A Mysterious Business, bringing
- 0:30ministry and marketplace wisdom together.
- 0:34If you've listened to the first couple episodes,
- 0:36you know that I've talked a lot about
- 0:37this idea of structures in the kingdom of
- 0:40God.
- 0:40In our last episode, we looked at Jesus'
- 0:43teaching on the wine and the wineskins.
- 0:46The idea that there's this substance, which is
- 0:48like the presence of God, the life that
- 0:50God offers us, but then there's a structure
- 0:52around it that God still uses to get
- 0:56that substance out to people.
- 0:58In our first episode, we introduced the series
- 1:01on this word mystery, that there's something hidden,
- 1:03which is then revealed, and that's the presence
- 1:05of Christ.
- 1:07If you've been listening carefully, you might be
- 1:09wondering, well, Chris, you haven't actually talked about
- 1:12any Bible passages that deal with business yet.
- 1:15One of the big ideas here is that
- 1:17business can be one of these structures in
- 1:19the kingdom of God.
- 1:20Citing the work of Dallas Willard, business can
- 1:23be a fundamental structure of love in the
- 1:26kingdom of God.
- 1:26That's a big claim.
- 1:27We need to look at specific biblical passages
- 1:30that talk about business if we're going to
- 1:32make a claim like that.
- 1:33That's what I want to do today, is
- 1:34actually go to a passage that I think
- 1:35establishes this really clearly.
- 1:38It's a bit of a Bible quiz.
- 1:40Can you think of someone in the Bible
- 1:42who's kind of famous, but we don't have
- 1:44their name?
- 1:45This is tough.
- 1:45Kind of famous, but we don't have their
- 1:46name.
- 1:48What they do is they take care of
- 1:50their family, they buy some land, they start
- 1:54a business, and they turn a profit, and
- 1:57they're praised for that.
- 1:58They're praised for the way that they succeed
- 2:00as an entrepreneur and the way they serve
- 2:02others in that business environment.
- 2:04Can you think of somebody in the Bible
- 2:05who's described this way?
- 2:07Take a minute.
- 2:08See if you can think of them.
- 2:08We don't know their name, but, all right.
- 2:11Okay.
- 2:12If you don't know, the answer is the
- 2:15noble woman of Proverbs 31.
- 2:18So as you may know, Proverbs is a
- 2:21book of wisdom literature in the Bible.
- 2:23Its final chapter, actually the final half of
- 2:25that chapter, is this kind of classic description
- 2:28of a noble woman, a woman who stands
- 2:32out for her godly character, the way that
- 2:34her connection with God extends to her connection
- 2:37with her family and with the broader community
- 2:39around her.
- 2:40And sometimes Christians have emphasized that family piece
- 2:44while neglecting the piece that goes beyond the
- 2:47family into the broader community.
- 2:48But that's actually the bigger chunk of the
- 2:51text.
- 2:51So I'm going to read the whole passage
- 2:53here.
- 2:54It's a little bit longer, and then we're
- 2:55going to go to a couple different scholars
- 2:57that can help us understand it.
- 2:58But listen for this passage as a description
- 3:01of an entrepreneur, as somebody who's working in
- 3:04the marketplace to turn a profit.
- 3:07Okay.
- 3:08So this is Proverbs 31, starting in verse
- 3:1110.
- 3:12An excellent wife, who can find.
- 3:15She is far more precious than jewels.
- 3:17The heart of her husband trusts in her,
- 3:20and he will have no lack of gain.
- 3:22She does him good and not harm all
- 3:24the days of her life.
- 3:25She seeks wool and flax and works with
- 3:27willing hands.
- 3:29She is like the ships of the merchant.
- 3:30She brings her food from afar.
- 3:32She rises while it is yet night and
- 3:35provides food for her household and portions for
- 3:37her maidens.
- 3:38She considers a field and buys it.
- 3:41With the fruit of her hands, she plants
- 3:42a vineyard.
- 3:43She dresses herself with strength and makes her
- 3:45arms strong.
- 3:46She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
- 3:49Her lamp does not go out at night.
- 3:52She puts her hands to the distef and
- 3:54her hands to the spindle.
- 3:55She opens her hand to the poor and
- 3:57reaches out her hands to the needy.
- 3:59She is not afraid of snow for her
- 4:01household, for all her household are clothed in
- 4:04scarlet.
- 4:05She makes bed coverings for herself.
- 4:07Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
- 4:09Her husband is known in the gates when
- 4:12he sits among the elders of the land.
- 4:13She makes linen garments and sells them.
- 4:16She delivers sashes to the merchant.
- 4:18Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she
- 4:21laughs at the time to come.
- 4:22She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the
- 4:24teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
- 4:26She looks well to the ways of her
- 4:28household and does not eat the bread of
- 4:30idleness.
- 4:31Her children rise up and call her blessed.
- 4:33Her husband also, and he praises her.
- 4:36Many women have done excellently, but you surpassed
- 4:39them all.
- 4:40Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but
- 4:42a woman who fears the Lord is to
- 4:43be praised.
- 4:45Give her the fruit of her hands and
- 4:47let her works praise her in the gates.
- 4:52Okay, listening to that, did you catch all
- 4:54of the business details, right?
- 4:56Even that final verse, let her works praise
- 4:59her in the gates.
- 5:00It basically says, let her reputation abound because
- 5:03of how well she's done in these business
- 5:05ventures, these works that she's undertaken.
- 5:07So I wanna go to Dr. Hannah Stoltz.
- 5:10She's one of the scholars that kind of
- 5:12helped cue me into how this passage speaks
- 5:14to business as a structure that the scriptures
- 5:18bless.
- 5:19So Dr. Hannah Stoltz, she's now at Baylor
- 5:21University.
- 5:22Her area of expertise is supply chain management,
- 5:26but she also has a biblical studies degree.
- 5:28She's written a book about wisdom and business.
- 5:31So this is from that part of her
- 5:33work, an essay she wrote a few years
- 5:34ago, surprising lessons from the noble woman of
- 5:37Proverbs 31.
- 5:39And so she writes, maybe it's not surprising
- 5:42that when I come to this passage as
- 5:45a business scholar and supply chain professor, I
- 5:47see a portrayal of an outstanding business leader
- 5:50who happens to be a woman.
- 5:52We can better understand Solomon's noble woman, if
- 5:56we realize that the word translated as household
- 5:58is oikos.
- 6:00That's in verses 21 and 27.
- 6:03Let me just pause there in the quote.
- 6:04She's going off of the Septuagint translation of
- 6:08the Old Testament, which would be in Greek.
- 6:10The original Hebrew of the passage wouldn't have
- 6:14used the word oikos.
- 6:15It would have used this word betta.
- 6:17But betta is also translated house or household
- 6:21to mean this larger economic unit.
- 6:23So the point that she's making still stands,
- 6:25whether we're using Hebrew betta or Greek oikos.
- 6:28It's a bigger concept of household than we
- 6:30might be used to.
- 6:31So back to the quote here from Dr.
- 6:34Stoltz.
- 6:35The reference is not to the domestic nuclear
- 6:38family with which we are familiar.
- 6:40Rather, it principally refers to the basic unit
- 6:43of economic activity in the ancient world.
- 6:45Abraham, with all his servants, animals, and other
- 6:48forms of wealth, was head of an oikos.
- 6:51So was Job.
- 6:52In our modern parlance, therefore, oikos is better
- 6:54understood as a family business venture, not a
- 6:57domestic family unit.
- 6:59Which makes it much less surprising then that
- 7:02Proverbs 31 mentions this noble woman's children only
- 7:04once, her husband just three times.
- 7:07The entirety of the other verses are dedicated
- 7:09to her commercial activities.
- 7:12So again, we see this kind of in
- 7:14the balance of what's described in the passage.
- 7:17Obviously, this woman is deeply connected to her
- 7:19family.
- 7:19It says her children rise up and call
- 7:21her blessed.
- 7:21That's wonderful.
- 7:22At the same time, what's she doing?
- 7:24She's going out and buying property, right?
- 7:26This is in verse 16.
- 7:28She considers a field and buys it.
- 7:30With the fruit of her hands, she plants
- 7:33a vineyard.
- 7:33So the fruit of her hands would be
- 7:35the profits from previous business ventures, right?
- 7:37So she's done some smaller business ventures.
- 7:39She builds up enough capital that she can
- 7:41go and purchase land and start a vineyard.
- 7:43She starts a new business with the capital
- 7:45that she's created from her prior ventures, right?
- 7:48She dresses herself with strength and makes her
- 7:50arms strong.
- 7:51That's verse 17.
- 7:52Verse 18, she perceives that her merchandise is
- 7:54profitable.
- 7:55So she's creating products from a vineyard, presumably
- 7:58wine and other things.
- 7:59It talks about her doing different things with
- 8:01textiles that she's going to sell at a
- 8:04profit in the public marketplace.
- 8:06And this is represented as an expression of
- 8:09her life with God, right?
- 8:10What does it say at the bottom in
- 8:13verse 30?
- 8:15But a woman who fears the Lord is
- 8:17to be praised, right?
- 8:19It's saying, look at the way that this
- 8:20woman fears the Lord.
- 8:22She is loving the people around her.
- 8:24She's loving her children.
- 8:25It mentions that she's remembering the poor and
- 8:27needy as well.
- 8:28So she's using the overflow of profit in
- 8:31her business to see to the well-being
- 8:33of those in her community that might be
- 8:35disadvantaged in some way.
- 8:36She's serving other people.
- 8:38And clearly, there's a kind of dynamic of
- 8:40joy here as well.
- 8:42It says, she works with willing hands.
- 8:45When I go to another scholar, this is
- 8:47R.
- 8:47Paul Stevens, who talks about that verse that
- 8:50says she works with willing hands.
- 8:53So he says it could also be translated,
- 8:56she works with her hands with pleasure.
- 8:59That's verse 13.
- 9:01R.
- 9:02Paul Stevens says, there are multiple joys in
- 9:05work.
- 9:05The joy of simply being able to work,
- 9:07the joy of using gifts and talents, and
- 9:10the joy of simply knowing that others will
- 9:11benefit from our work.
- 9:13But the ultimate joy in work, here hinted
- 9:15at in the reference to our ideal woman
- 9:17being a woman who fears the Lord, is
- 9:19to work gladly in God's name and for
- 9:22God's sake, her motivation comes from a relationship
- 9:25of affectionate reverence for God.
- 9:29A relationship of affectionate reverence for God.
- 9:33Isn't that beautiful?
- 9:34Okay, okay.
- 9:35So backing up, let's draw a little bit
- 9:38on our last episode, this idea of substance
- 9:40versus structures.
- 9:41What is the substance here?
- 9:43The substance is this motivation rooted in her
- 9:46connection with God.
- 9:47She's motivated by her fear of the Lord.
- 9:50She's motivated by affection for God, love for
- 9:52God.
- 9:53And then out of that flows this service
- 9:55to others.
- 9:56She provides for her family's needs, and she
- 9:58even provides for others in the community beyond
- 10:00her family.
- 10:01And she's serving the needs of the community
- 10:02through the economic transactions themselves, right?
- 10:05The people who are buying her products benefit
- 10:07by buying the products.
- 10:09And so she has both profitable positive effect
- 10:11on the community and charitable positive effect on
- 10:13the community with the overflow of her profits.
- 10:17So the structure of that essence of loving
- 10:21service and joy is a profitable business.
- 10:26Okay.
- 10:27So what does that mean?
- 10:28Does that mean that everybody needs to start
- 10:32a profitable business or that like women specifically
- 10:34need to start profitable businesses in order to
- 10:36honor God?
- 10:36That's not what it means.
- 10:38This is an example and Dr. Stoltz helps
- 10:40us here too.
- 10:41So back to Dr. Stoltz, she connects it
- 10:44to Abraham.
- 10:44So she talked about Abraham having an oikos.
- 10:47Let me read this here.
- 10:50The noble woman of Proverbs 31 is not
- 10:52just a woman of exceptional wisdom and skill.
- 10:55She is something much more.
- 10:57In the way her business venture blesses everyone
- 10:59it touches, she embodies God's covenantal blessed to
- 11:03be a blessing intention for all of us.
- 11:07Let me read that again.
- 11:08In the way her business venture blesses everyone
- 11:11it touches, she embodies God's covenantal blessed to
- 11:15be a blessing intention for all of us.
- 11:19So remember Abraham, Abraham when he was blessed
- 11:21by God, right?
- 11:22God said, those who bless you, I will
- 11:24bless, right?
- 11:26He also said that Abraham would become a
- 11:30blessing for all the nations, right?
- 11:32Abraham was blessed so that he could be
- 11:34a blessing.
- 11:34That's how God works when he's in covenant
- 11:36with people.
- 11:37He blesses them in that covenant, but then
- 11:39that blessing isn't just for them.
- 11:40It extends beyond them to bless other people.
- 11:43That's the dynamic for all of us as
- 11:45the people of God.
- 11:46For those of us who have entered into
- 11:47God's covenant with Abraham through faith in Jesus,
- 11:51the Messiah of the descendants of Abraham, the
- 11:53people of Israel.
- 11:54We now are blessed to be a blessing.
- 11:56That's the thing that's universal.
- 11:57That's the essence, right?
- 11:59Being motivated by that affectionate relationship with God,
- 12:03love for God, and then lovingly serving others
- 12:06with joy.
- 12:07That's the essence that's true for all of
- 12:09us.
- 12:09All of us are blessed by God wherever
- 12:11we are so that we can be a
- 12:13blessing to others.
- 12:15One structure for that is to love others
- 12:17by running a profitable business.
- 12:20Okay, so you see the difference between the
- 12:21substance and the structure?
- 12:22The substance is universal.
- 12:24The structure may differ from person to person
- 12:26in terms of your specific place in life
- 12:28and calling and gifts, et cetera.
- 12:31So what does that mean practically for us?
- 12:33Well, I want to start for any listeners
- 12:35who really are entrepreneurs.
- 12:37If you have started a business and you
- 12:39are trying to make that business profitable, I
- 12:41want to affirm that the scriptures specifically name
- 12:45and bless that structure.
- 12:46That expression of love for God and others
- 12:49is right there at the heart of the
- 12:51Bible.
- 12:52This is not just some side thing or
- 12:54like a JV version of Christianity.
- 12:57It's not like people who do nonprofit ministry
- 12:59are the real spiritual heroes.
- 13:01No, no, in this wisdom literature, the conclusion
- 13:05to the book of Proverbs, when it's like,
- 13:07how do we describe somebody who's really full
- 13:09of the life of God?
- 13:11Ah, let's describe a mom who runs a
- 13:13business, right?
- 13:14Like that's the best.
- 13:15That's the ideal.
- 13:17That's an expression that's just as valid as
- 13:19any other expression of God's love in the
- 13:22world.
- 13:22So I just really want to name and
- 13:24bless that.
- 13:25That if you're trying to run a profitable
- 13:27business and you're doing it to love God
- 13:29and to love others in the workings of
- 13:31the business itself, and then yes, using the
- 13:33profits you gain for purposes of generosity, like
- 13:36that is blessed by God.
- 13:37That is kingdom work that deeply matters.
- 13:40That is a fundamental structure of love in
- 13:43the kingdom of God.
- 13:44Be blessed as you do that work, that
- 13:46God is with you.
- 13:47He sees you.
- 13:48He wants your business to serve other people.
- 13:51Wow.
- 13:53Okay.
- 13:53What about the rest of us, right?
- 13:54Those of us who are not business entrepreneurs
- 13:56for us, I think we can still imitate
- 13:58the character of this noble woman in Proverbs
- 14:0231, right?
- 14:02Like we see her character that she works
- 14:05really diligently.
- 14:06It says her lamp does not go out
- 14:08at night, right?
- 14:08If work still needs to be done, she
- 14:10tucks the kids in and then goes back
- 14:11and finishes the work project.
- 14:12Sometimes that's how it is, right?
- 14:15Also, she has joy.
- 14:16She has that sense of doing her work
- 14:19with her hands with pleasure, as R.
- 14:21Paul Stevens said.
- 14:22Can we take joy in our work while
- 14:25continuing to work hard?
- 14:26And then of course, the manner of her
- 14:28work is to serve others, right?
- 14:29She provides for the need of her household.
- 14:31She's not afraid of winter because she knows
- 14:33that her kids are provided for.
- 14:35So all of us in whatever kind of
- 14:37work we have, we can have that posture
- 14:39of diligence, of joy, and of service.
- 14:43I think as we do that, whatever our
- 14:45structure is, we'll draw closer to God as
- 14:49we go about our daily work.
- 14:52Lord Jesus, thank you that you bless these
- 14:54different structures in scripture, including the structure of
- 14:58business and profitable entrepreneurship.
- 15:01We pray that you would bless everyone who's
- 15:04listening to this, where that's the specific structure
- 15:06that you've given them, that they would feel
- 15:09your presence, that your love and your joy
- 15:12would be in them and move through them
- 15:14as they do their work.
- 15:16And we pray for all of us that
- 15:17we would live that life of diligence and
- 15:21joy and service and find you in it.
- 15:24Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 15:26do our work with you.
- 15:32Thanks for listening.
