- 2:09Speaker 4: it is parade to day or parade night, I guess
- 2:11Speaker 4: you would say. In Charleston. The Christmas parade that was
- 2:13Speaker 4: scheduled for a couple of weeks ago was postponed due
- 2:16Speaker 4: to the weather. It is being held tonight. We're going
- 2:18Speaker 4: to talk to some folks from this city of Charleston.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Not sure whether the mayor is going to be here
- 2:21Speaker 4: or not. I talked to her yesterday. She may be here.
- 2:26Speaker 4: May she was on with V one hundred earlier. If not,
- 2:29Speaker 4: then we'll have someone from the city, but it may
- 2:32Speaker 4: very well be the mayor. Now, we are going to
- 2:33Speaker 4: be covering the parade as we do every year. This
- 2:36Speaker 4: year it'll be Chris Lawrence and Bobby Spry our team

- 3:03Speaker 4: Road Children's clothier and toy company, and her company will
- 3:05Speaker 4: be sponsoring our coverage of the City of Charleston Christmas
- 3:08Speaker 4: Parade tonight. She joins us this morning in the studio. Jessica,
- 3:11Speaker 4: good morning, how.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Are you, good morning, thrilled to be here.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Thank you for being here. I am going to presume
- 3:18Speaker 4: that with you sponsoring our coverage, you must be a
- 3:22Speaker 4: big fan of Christmas.
- 3:24Speaker 5: We're a huge fan of Christmas.
- 3:25Speaker 6: I've got three kids that are born in December, two
- 3:28Speaker 6: kids born in December, her husband with birthday in December,
- 3:30Speaker 6: and December's a long, month long celebration.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I was going to say, what are the date what
- 3:35Speaker 4: are the dates of the birthdays?
- 3:36Speaker 7: The fifth?
- 3:36Speaker 6: So was the original day of the Christmas parade? The fifth,
- 3:39Speaker 6: the twenty third, and the twenty eighth.
- 3:40Speaker 4: All right, So are they concerned, you know, these family
- 3:44Speaker 4: members of yours, about each year everything just getting combined
- 3:47Speaker 4: or is it just better to have one?
- 3:49Speaker 8: Oh?
- 3:49Speaker 5: No, they're not at all.
- 3:51Speaker 6: They are super excited to have anything Christmas themed to
- 3:55Speaker 6: go along with her birthday.
- 3:56Speaker 4: So what's your what's your favorite part of the Christmas season.
- 4:00Speaker 5: I love to bake with my children. Okay, it's a
- 4:02Speaker 5: lot of fun.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Okay, what do we bake? And where are the samples?
- 4:06Speaker 5: I did not bring tho in this morning, So I
- 4:09Speaker 5: have a.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Homemade people I should have known.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Geez, I've safely guarded homemade piscotti recipe. So if you're
- 4:18Speaker 6: not a piscotti fan, it's just because you haven't had mine.
- 4:20Speaker 4: So I am a big piscotti fan.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Okay, Well, now I know I'll have to bring some.
- 4:24Speaker 4: In noted noted for next time that you're here. So
- 4:27Speaker 4: tell us about your place. Liberty Row Children's Clothier and
- 4:29Speaker 4: Toy Company. That's quite a mouthful. Tell us about it.
- 4:31Speaker 5: It is.
- 4:32Speaker 6: We started off originally carrying high end children's clothing. We
- 4:36Speaker 6: have eight children, so we felt the eight children I
- 4:40Speaker 6: was waiting, Yes, we have eight children.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Don't talk here about me. I'm kidding. That's the voice
- 4:46Speaker 4: of body's price and you'll be on the child. I'm
- 4:47Speaker 4: just kidding with you here, But go ahead.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Eight eight kids, yes, twenty down to age three.
- 4:52Speaker 6: And quality clothing is something you don't always find, especially
- 4:56Speaker 6: in the Charleston area. And we saw that opening a
- 5:00Speaker 6: complaining to my husband that we had to go travel
- 5:02Speaker 6: to Charlotte or Columbus if you wanted something special, and
- 5:06Speaker 6: so he said, well, I think you could solve that problem.
- 5:10Speaker 6: So we started off with children's clothing and toys, but
- 5:12Speaker 6: we have quickly morphed into a lot of gifts. So
- 5:15Speaker 6: if you were looking for a gift for someone in
- 5:17Speaker 6: your life, we have something for everyone.
- 5:20Speaker 4: So give us an example to some of those things.
- 5:21Speaker 4: I mean, and we know the clothing items and what
- 5:25Speaker 4: is it that separates the high end clothing items for
- 5:27Speaker 4: just regular clothes? I mean, what's hot, I guess is
- 5:30Speaker 4: what I'm looking for.
- 5:31Speaker 6: Well, this time of year, if you're looking for a
- 5:34Speaker 6: special Christmas dress, you don't want your daughter to be
- 5:36Speaker 6: wearing one of you know, five of the same dress that.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Since we're limited here in our shopping, you definitely can
- 5:41Speaker 6: find something different and unique.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Quality, though, I would say, is something that.
- 5:45Speaker 6: You can wash and wear and wash and wear, and
- 5:46Speaker 6: you can hand down and it doesn't look like it's
- 5:49Speaker 6: been washed and worn and washed and worn, So hand
- 5:52Speaker 6: me down. Quality is definitely super important. Then also gifting,
- 5:57Speaker 6: you're asking hilariously enough. My hottest selling gift basket this
- 6:00Speaker 6: time of year is our bourbon gift basket. So we
- 6:04Speaker 6: have custom h to three or four Charlie West bourbon glasses.
- 6:07Speaker 6: We carry lots of bourbon barrel products.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Dickinson may not necessarily aim for the children.
- 6:12Speaker 5: No, No, it's for the parents who are dealing.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I got it. Makes it a lot easier.
- 6:19Speaker 6: So Dickinson Sealt makes that awesome salt and sorghum bitters
- 6:22Speaker 6: that we have lots of great, different, unique products. Paul Smith,
- 6:26Speaker 6: who's right next door at ten Toon Bridge, made some
- 6:28Speaker 6: awesome recommendations on some food lines for us, so you
- 6:31Speaker 6: can find some gourmet food and gift.
- 6:32Speaker 4: It's got to be really cool having Chef Paul next door.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I listened to his interview Who's on with the with
- 6:36Speaker 4: Weekly on Hotline yesterday and I listened to it on
- 6:38Speaker 4: my drive home yesterday, and I love having Chef Paul
- 6:41Speaker 4: on the show. It's got to there's a whole lot
- 6:43Speaker 4: worse neighbors you could have than Chef Paul.
- 6:45Speaker 6: Oh, they are there, They're amazing. We really they took
- 6:49Speaker 6: our mail while we were under construction, we were able
- 6:51Speaker 6: to keep their tables where they're having their floors redone.
- 6:53Speaker 6: They're just truly good people and we really appreciate and
- 6:58Speaker 6: we get some evening traffic, some walk through traffic because of.
- 7:02Speaker 4: The church is really great walking off the dinner the
- 7:04Speaker 4: next jo. But Dave Islands showing five any Live is

- 7:14Speaker 4: one zero four. Visit fresh Air Filters dot us because
- 7:16Speaker 4: everyone deserves fresh air. Now tell us again, exactly where
- 7:20Speaker 4: is your place? I know it's next to ten ten
- 7:22Speaker 4: but for those that may not know exactly where is that?
- 7:24Speaker 6: Sure? We are on Bridge Road and the Bridge Road
- 7:26Speaker 6: Shopping District right here in Charlston, West Virginia in the
- 7:30Speaker 6: South Hills area.
- 7:31Speaker 4: And talk about that bridger Row Shopping district because I
- 7:34Speaker 4: think sometimes when people think of shopping, you know here
- 7:37Speaker 4: in the area. Of course, they think of the malls
- 7:38Speaker 4: and things of that, and there's a place for that,
- 7:40Speaker 4: and they think of what's considered to be the downtown
- 7:42Speaker 4: businesses and a place for that as well. But you
- 7:44Speaker 4: guys are I don't want to say you're hitting gym
- 7:47Speaker 4: because I think everybody in Charleston pretty much knows about it,
- 7:49Speaker 4: but maybe those that live in other areas in our
- 7:51Speaker 4: listing area may not realize everything that there is to
- 7:55Speaker 4: offer up there.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Oh you'd be surprised how many people come up and say,
- 7:58Speaker 6: oh my goodness, I had no idea this was up here.
- 8:01Speaker 6: And you literally could knock out your entire shopping list
- 8:04Speaker 6: for Christmas in that area. There's gifts, shoes, high end
- 8:09Speaker 6: women's clothing, men's clothing, there's just something for everybody. An
- 8:13Speaker 6: amazing bakery, just.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Some really great food options up there too, are a
- 8:16Speaker 4: really good not just Tantan, but all the others.
- 8:19Speaker 6: Well, you've got Romeos Gelato, You've got Lola's fern Bank,
- 8:23Speaker 6: which is amazing farm to table bar food that's different.
- 8:26Speaker 5: And then obviously ten ten Bridge.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah, again, we're talking with Jessica Bacchis and she and
- 8:32Speaker 4: her company will be it's a Liberty Road children's clothing
- 8:36Speaker 4: and toy company sponsoring our coverage of the parade tonight.
- 8:39Speaker 4: So why was it important for you to sponsor the parade?
- 8:43Speaker 4: Our coverage.
- 8:44Speaker 5: We love the children.
- 8:45Speaker 6: We love my children, love every year participating in the parade,
- 8:48Speaker 6: watching the parade, have had several marching bands, and we
- 8:51Speaker 6: love to be part of the community. So one of
- 8:53Speaker 6: the things we want to be known about Liberty Row
- 8:55Speaker 6: is that we are community involved. And so this was
- 8:58Speaker 6: just another way that we can be involved in the community.
- 9:00Speaker 4: And this is so important I think for people to realize,
- 9:03Speaker 4: you know. And again there's places I get it for
- 9:05Speaker 4: different types of shopping, not just Christmas but year round.
- 9:09Speaker 4: But you guys and you folks like that, and there's
- 9:12Speaker 4: several all over Charleston, all over the Kanal Valley that
- 9:14Speaker 4: truly give back to the community. Amazon doesn't necessarily do that,
- 9:19Speaker 4: you know. And so when you guys are the first
- 9:23Speaker 4: ones to step up, and I know that you just
- 9:24Speaker 4: get covered up with people asking for donations and you're
- 9:28Speaker 4: happy to help. But I think the consumers also owe
- 9:32Speaker 4: you guys a little something by saying, Okay, you've always
- 9:34Speaker 4: been good to help out the community, to sponsor events
- 9:37Speaker 4: like this, we need your help, especially coming out of
- 9:39Speaker 4: the COVID years.
- 9:41Speaker 6: Absolutely, we have a lot of people who just assume
- 9:44Speaker 6: they can get things less expensive on Amazon. When actually
- 9:47Speaker 6: a lot of times we beat the price on Amazon,
- 9:49Speaker 6: especially on toys and other things. But one of the
- 9:51Speaker 6: things that we really try to do, we have several
- 9:54Speaker 6: of our brands that have a philanthropic purpose behind what
- 9:56Speaker 6: they do. So not only are we giving back to
- 9:58Speaker 6: the community, but we specifically pick brands that are feeding
- 10:03Speaker 6: hungry children in the US, or are fighting human trafficking,
- 10:06Speaker 6: or have a purpose behind what they're making very important.
- 10:11Speaker 4: So, how has the twenty twenty four been for you?
- 10:13Speaker 4: I mentioned COVID and we're hopefully, you know, getting out
- 10:15Speaker 4: of this, but some some some constants, some folks are
- 10:18Speaker 4: still struggling to kind of get out of that. How
- 10:21Speaker 4: has this year been for you?
- 10:22Speaker 6: Well, it was our first full year, so we're still learning.
- 10:26Speaker 6: Bobby and I were just talking about that. We've really
- 10:28Speaker 6: only almost been open for eighteen months, so we're still
- 10:31Speaker 6: in that learning curve. Like I said, we shifted towards
- 10:34Speaker 6: gift a lot because we were seeing a lot of
- 10:37Speaker 6: people coming in asking for gifts, specifically in the evenings.
- 10:41Speaker 6: So we are not losing our children's lines. We will
- 10:44Speaker 6: continue with our amazing just unique toys, not things that
- 10:48Speaker 6: are something that's going to break and you need to
- 10:50Speaker 6: throw away different and unique educational toys.
- 10:53Speaker 5: But we are always going to have a gift now
- 10:55Speaker 5: for everybody.
- 10:56Speaker 4: And there's a huge, huge market for that sort of
- 10:59Speaker 4: thing now, Jessica, I mean for these unique gifts that
- 11:02Speaker 4: you can't get necessarily anything else. And you mentioned things
- 11:05Speaker 4: that are well made that aren't going to break right away.
- 11:08Speaker 6: So we carry Linel trains, Traxis cars. But then we
- 11:12Speaker 6: also carry Tenderleaf Is, the neatest line of wooden toys.
- 11:17Speaker 5: They don't leave.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Everything to the imagination, but just enough. And there are
- 11:20Speaker 6: those things that you're going to stick up in your
- 11:22Speaker 6: attic and pull back down for your grandkids.
- 11:24Speaker 4: That's good stuff. That's good stuff right there. But Dave
- 11:26Speaker 4: Island showing five. Any Life is brought to you part
- 11:28Speaker 4: by Hustand's Pizza. Check out the holiday pack perfect for

- 11:42Speaker 4: we appreciate you sponsoring our coverage of the parade tonight
- 11:45Speaker 4: and for being a great advertiser here with us, and
- 11:47Speaker 4: we'll see you at the prey tonight. I'm going to
- 11:48Speaker 4: give you cause now the count people say, they always say,
- 11:52Speaker 4: are you ready for Christmas? And I don't know that
- 11:54Speaker 4: anybody truly ever is ready for Christmas. But now that
- 11:57Speaker 4: we're starting, we're a week away from Christmas Eve, we're
- 12:00Speaker 4: starting to get into the final days. Bobby's over here
- 12:02Speaker 4: shaking her head that she knows that she's not bought
- 12:05Speaker 4: my gift yet. I can tell you that, or at
- 12:08Speaker 4: least I don't think she has. So as we get
- 12:11Speaker 4: into this final week of Christmas, here is your opportunity, Jessica,
- 12:14Speaker 4: to sell the people on why they need to visit
- 12:16Speaker 4: businesses like yours.
- 12:19Speaker 6: You are going to find customer service like nothing else.
- 12:22Speaker 6: If you're not sure what to give, we will help
- 12:24Speaker 6: you find that perfect gift. And we gift wrap, which
- 12:28Speaker 6: is another thing off your list, so we can take
- 12:30Speaker 6: that off your list for you. And on top of that,
- 12:33Speaker 6: this is so often November and December is a lot
- 12:36Speaker 6: of times what determines whether those small businesses are going
- 12:39Speaker 6: to be there next year. For you to appreciate and love.
- 12:42Speaker 4: All right, Well, we appreciate you a sponsor. Now, do
- 12:45Speaker 4: you have an online presence? We were talking before weve
- 12:46Speaker 4: been on there about social media. Talk about that so.
- 12:49Speaker 6: Well if you have not seen it yet, we do
- 12:51Speaker 6: a live every Thursday evening. I may or may not
- 12:54Speaker 6: try to do the live while my husband entertains everyone,
- 12:57Speaker 6: but you definitely should check that out Thursday evenings at eight.
- 13:01Speaker 6: We are just the Liberty Road Children's Clothing and Toys
- 13:03Speaker 6: on Facebook. We're Shop Liberty Row on Instagram, and we
- 13:07Speaker 6: do have a website. It is shopliberty Row dot com.
- 13:10Speaker 4: All right, Jesscott, appreciate you being here. It's pleasure to
- 13:13Speaker 4: get to know you. It sounds like you got a
- 13:14Speaker 4: great thing going up there, and you and all of
- 13:15Speaker 4: the businesses up there, we wish you the best of luck.
- 13:17Speaker 4: We love helping out the small businesses as as best
- 13:20Speaker 4: we can, and our listeners you need to do the
- 13:23Speaker 4: same thing as well by patronizing. So Jessica, appreciate you
- 13:26Speaker 4: being here. To appreciate you sponsoring our brank coverage tonight.

- 15:37Speaker 9: now is not the time to rest on our laurels. Instead,

- 16:28Speaker 4: the show, Joe Crawford is going to be here. He
- 16:30Speaker 4: is the Sheriff elect of Kanawha County on tomorrow's show,
- 16:33Speaker 4: said a financi Sheeric tar will be stopping by. He,
- 16:36Speaker 4: of course, was vying for the presidency of the state
- 16:38Speaker 4: Senate last week. That didn't work out for him. Now
- 16:40Speaker 4: Randy Smith will lead the Senate. We'll talk to Sinta
- 16:42Speaker 4: Duitar about that and anything else that happens to beyond
- 16:45Speaker 4: his mind. Plus Millie Snyder is here too. That is
- 16:47Speaker 4: coming up on tomorrow's show. After a postponement of a
- 16:51Speaker 4: couple of weeks, the Charleston Christmas Breade is back on tonight.
- 16:54Speaker 4: We'll have the broadcast coverage not just one, but two places.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Over on V one hundred. Stephen Jenny will have coverage
- 16:59Speaker 4: and here on w c HS the coverage handle by
- 17:01Speaker 4: Chris Lawrence and Bobby Spriye. Bobby is with us right now.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Good morning, Bobby. How are you?
- 17:06Speaker 5: Good morning, Dave.
- 17:06Speaker 10: I'm doing well.
- 17:07Speaker 5: How are you?
- 17:08Speaker 4: Have you ever done parade coverage in the past?
- 17:10Speaker 10: I have not.
- 17:11Speaker 5: This is my first dog rol parade.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Okay, Well, and you picked the biggest one in the
- 17:15Speaker 4: say of West Virginia. That's a that's good. That's good.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Chris Lawrence on that, okay, and Jenny Murray is also here, Jenny,
- 17:21Speaker 4: how are you?
- 17:22Speaker 10: I'm great, and Bobby's gonna be great because she knows everybody.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true. That's true. Bobby pretty much knows everybody.
- 17:30Speaker 4: I've learned that in the short time that she's been
- 17:33Speaker 4: back with this because she was here once before and
- 17:35Speaker 4: then she left, and then she came back. So we've
- 17:38Speaker 4: got her back in the in the fold again. I'm
- 17:40Speaker 4: so happy to be here and I share an office
- 17:42Speaker 4: with her, and I can tell you couldn't ask for
- 17:43Speaker 4: a worse roommate than Bobby's pride. Mayor good One is here.
- 17:48Speaker 4: How are you, Mayor?
- 17:48Speaker 3: I'm excellent. How are you?
- 17:50Speaker 4: And did you guys finish taking your selfies over there?
- 17:53Speaker 4: Because I'm trying to be trying to do a little
- 17:55Speaker 4: radio show.
- 17:58Speaker 5: Stuff we got so, Mayor I I want.
- 18:00Speaker 4: You in to talk about some of the logistics of
- 18:03Speaker 4: the parade because Charleston's the biggest city in the state
- 18:07Speaker 4: of West Virginia. This is the probably the biggest parade,
- 18:10Speaker 4: if not one of the two. Is it the biggest parade?
- 18:12Speaker 4: How many entries do we have this year?
- 18:14Speaker 11: Well, we have over one hundred and fifty one hundred
- 18:18Speaker 11: and fifty, which you know when we start putting this
- 18:21Speaker 11: together at evening when we took a chance and said, okay,
- 18:24Speaker 11: we're going to make it from a daytime and evening.
- 18:26Speaker 11: And let me explain that because a lot of folks say,
- 18:28Speaker 11: why didn't you just put a daytime?
- 18:29Speaker 3: I love to come. It was so fun.
- 18:32Speaker 11: It is the second busiest day for our downtown businesses
- 18:37Speaker 11: is a Christmas parade. Holly Jolly Browley obviously is one.
- 18:41Speaker 11: And so a lot of our downtown businesses said, please
- 18:44Speaker 11: don't because, by the way, a lot of us don't
- 18:47Speaker 11: open our doors till ten. And if you're kicking off
- 18:49Speaker 11: the parade, we wanted that hour. You know, if you
- 18:52Speaker 11: want me to open at eight thirty, I guess I could.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Amy.
- 18:55Speaker 11: So it was not only the businesses, but I've been
- 18:58Speaker 11: to so many evening per raids and that's where the
- 19:01Speaker 11: excitement is, that's where the lights are. And this year
- 19:03Speaker 11: Neon Wonderland like, bring your glove sticks, Dave, I should
- 19:06Speaker 11: have brought him something.
- 19:07Speaker 4: So you kind of teased that the last time you're
- 19:09Speaker 4: on the show, But now it's out there, this is
- 19:11Speaker 4: Neon Wonderland. What exactly does that mean?
- 19:13Speaker 11: You get Neon Wonderland everyone. If you don't like it,
- 19:15Speaker 11: blame Andrew Workman in the Mayor's office. If everybody likes it,
- 19:18Speaker 11: blame Dave So. Neon Wonderland is when you think of Christmas,
- 19:24Speaker 11: and I love, love, love love the old fashioned light bulbs,
- 19:28Speaker 11: of the bulbs, the Christmas tree bumps which we had
- 19:30Speaker 11: growing up on Christmas tree and now I don't think
- 19:32Speaker 11: they sell them anymore because I think they burned down
- 19:34Speaker 11: houses and stuff because they were the ceramic ones that
- 19:36Speaker 11: used to get like really hot, but they had like
- 19:39Speaker 11: a Neon shape to them. And so Andrew Workman from
- 19:42Speaker 11: our office, who's always working on something, said, oh, this
- 19:47Speaker 11: is really cool. They did it in another city, in
- 19:49Speaker 11: another state. Maybe we tried Neon Wonderland.
- 19:51Speaker 3: It was like, oh yeah, like those big bulbs, those.
- 19:53Speaker 11: Great big lights. So it's Neon Wonderland. It's going to
- 19:56Speaker 11: be great. I've been shared on my Facebook page this morning.
- 20:00Speaker 11: A special guest, our director of Public Art Jeff Pearson
- 20:04Speaker 11: does kind of a fun little you know, Macy's Day,
- 20:08Speaker 11: kind of fun little puppet or something.
- 20:11Speaker 3: This puppet ain't little this year.
- 20:13Speaker 4: She big. No, Now you were I know you teased
- 20:16Speaker 4: it as you said on your personal social.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Media is like as big as my car.
- 20:20Speaker 4: You just showed us, You just showed us a picture.
- 20:22Speaker 11: This thing is going to be like she's enormous. You'll
- 20:24Speaker 11: be able to see her coming from.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Believing like she starts in Cistonville.
- 20:28Speaker 3: It just kind you can see her. Maybe you can
- 20:31Speaker 3: see her from Jupiter.
- 20:32Speaker 11: But that and then we have a great Here I
- 20:36Speaker 11: go with Andrew Workman again. Uh, we blame him. And
- 20:38Speaker 11: what's your theme? Do you think of something for the
- 20:40Speaker 11: mayor's office? Because we always like to participate because the
- 20:43Speaker 11: kids want us to. And every time I see a kid,
- 20:45Speaker 11: they say, what are you dressing up for their Christmas Pride?
- 20:47Speaker 11: Or their second favorite question, what are you dressing up
- 20:49Speaker 11: for Halloween?
- 20:50Speaker 3: And now as a mayor, I never.
- 20:51Speaker 11: Thought that I'd have to get a year's start and
- 20:53Speaker 11: what my outfit is for these special events. But I'll
- 20:56Speaker 11: give you a hint, Dave, And you and I are
- 20:58Speaker 11: the same age. You're a snidge old, Yeah I am.
- 21:01Speaker 11: But my mom my teacher. My parents were both teachers.
- 21:04Speaker 11: My mom actually worked two jobs, my dad worked three jobs.
- 21:07Speaker 11: And when we would go shopping or go to the mall,
- 21:08Speaker 11: they would say, here's some quarters. Please leave us alone.
- 21:11Speaker 11: We've got shopping to do because our mall was attached
- 21:14Speaker 11: to our shop or a grocery store.
- 21:16Speaker 3: This is a game that I used to play, and
- 21:18Speaker 3: I was very good at it.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Okay, that's eight and that's all we get to think of, Neon.
- 21:23Speaker 3: But that's it. I don't want you no guesses, no guesses,
- 21:26Speaker 3: that's it.
- 21:27Speaker 4: I think I've got a pretty good at it. But
- 21:29Speaker 4: I'm gonna keep my mouth that. I'm going to keep
- 21:30Speaker 4: my mouth yet. I'm going to keep my mouth out
- 21:31Speaker 4: of this.
- 21:32Speaker 3: It's cute, So I want you hear the music. You'll know.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Mayor, let's talk about the decision to move the parade.
- 21:36Speaker 4: It was originally set for Thursday, December the fifth. Sure,
- 21:39Speaker 4: we didn't have snow that night, but we did have
- 21:41Speaker 4: brutally cold temperatures. So the decision was made to move
- 21:44Speaker 4: the parade till tonight could be a little damp. I
- 21:47Speaker 4: don't know what Brian Hughes and Spencer Adkins were saying
- 21:49Speaker 4: at this point that maybe if we have rain it
- 21:52Speaker 4: would be later. Possibly, I don't know.
- 21:54Speaker 11: Yeah, it's not in the forecast right now, and you
- 21:57Speaker 11: know it's well, it's west Virginia.
- 21:58Speaker 3: I mean, so welcome to Appalachia that things can change
- 22:00Speaker 3: in a minute.
- 22:01Speaker 11: But honestly, here here it is. It's not that we
- 22:03Speaker 11: don't care about the cold. Bobby and Jenny, We'll go
- 22:05Speaker 11: out in the cold all day long. You don't want
- 22:08Speaker 11: me putting a five year old in her nutcracker outfit
- 22:11Speaker 11: and thin tights dancing in sub twelve degree weather.
- 22:15Speaker 3: You don't want me to.
- 22:16Speaker 4: And as I pointed out to you when we the
- 22:18Speaker 4: decision was made, Mayor, you also have a lot of
- 22:20Speaker 4: older folks that come out to the prey to cheer
- 22:22Speaker 4: on the little five.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Year old and.
- 22:25Speaker 11: So you know, oh she just wants to you know,
- 22:28Speaker 11: they're not tough enough. No, we can do it all
- 22:30Speaker 11: day long. I'm not going to ask our schools, our bands,
- 22:33Speaker 11: and our little guys.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Who look forward to this every year.
- 22:37Speaker 3: This is like their you know, Super Bowl.
- 22:40Speaker 11: And so we worked with the schools, We worked with
- 22:42Speaker 11: a lot of our groups, and they all said, first
- 22:44Speaker 11: of all, they called us first, please change it. Please,
- 22:47Speaker 11: please please, We're begging you. Hundreds, not just a couple,
- 22:50Speaker 11: hundreds of the groups who were in it said please
- 22:53Speaker 11: please change it. And so we did, and we worked
- 22:55Speaker 11: with it. You know, it's nice to have a meteorologist
- 22:57Speaker 11: on the line.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I actually called it. I literally called Brian Heres and said,
- 23:00Speaker 3: give me another date.
- 23:02Speaker 11: Hear what the schools are saying, because you know, we
- 23:04Speaker 11: want our big bands, you know, we want our Capital
- 23:07Speaker 11: and Gida bands, we want our John Adams bands there.
- 23:10Speaker 11: And so he gave us a couple of dates when
- 23:12Speaker 11: we went with it. So it's tonight at seven o'clock,
- 23:14Speaker 11: come downtown. It is going to be so fun. And
- 23:16Speaker 11: what is so great is that last night when I
- 23:19Speaker 11: was out and about after council watching the Marshall soccer game,
- 23:24Speaker 11: a lot of parents who have college AA's kids said,
- 23:26Speaker 11: Oh good, they're in town.
- 23:27Speaker 3: We're all going down because you.
- 23:29Speaker 11: Forget about the big kids, which Jessica Bachas was just
- 23:32Speaker 11: on and the is said to her in the hallway, Well,
- 23:36Speaker 11: first of all, thanks to Liberty Row for sponsoring the
- 23:40Speaker 11: parade and being the sponsor.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Have you ever gone to her shop?
- 23:43Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I love her shop so much.
- 23:45Speaker 11: And all my boys are bigger than most of the
- 23:47Speaker 11: trees downtown. I said to her, I wish there was
- 23:50Speaker 11: something like you when my boys were little, because boys
- 23:52Speaker 11: always get short shrift for the holidays, like you're dressing
- 23:55Speaker 11: up and everybody's got great dresses and things. I'm like,
- 23:58Speaker 11: I need a cool sweater for the for the boys
- 24:00Speaker 11: when they.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Were boys, get the clip on tie and hers for
- 24:02Speaker 4: the best.
- 24:03Speaker 11: But Jessica has me in her stuff at lerdi Row
- 24:06Speaker 11: is just off the well. First of all, you won't
- 24:08Speaker 11: find it. You won't find it anywhere else. That's number one.
- 24:12Speaker 11: And number two. Of course, my boys now get dressed
- 24:14Speaker 11: by Tony because they're you know, they're bigger than most,
- 24:17Speaker 11: you know, industrial sized refrigerators, and so they have to be.
- 24:21Speaker 11: But I go to shop now for toys because her
- 24:24Speaker 11: toy stuff is up there is just unbelievable. So for
- 24:27Speaker 11: Trent and TIFFs toy train drive, I went there because
- 24:29Speaker 11: I don't have children and I do not.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Want any grandchildren anytime soon. Everybody's got stuff, but that's
- 24:35Speaker 3: the place to be.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Talking to Charleston Mayor Amy Schulder, good one about the
- 24:39Speaker 4: Charles and Christmas Parade tonight. But Aveolance Chilling five, Vidie
- 24:41Speaker 4: Live Brown to You, parted by Morgan to Morgan. If
- 24:43Speaker 4: you're injured, hire Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law
- 24:45Speaker 4: for Jenn Murray, let me bring you in here because
- 24:48Speaker 4: you uh is Bishop.
- 24:49Speaker 10: Joining you and I is, yeah, and today's birthday.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I did not know that.
- 24:53Speaker 10: So yeah, we're going.
- 24:55Speaker 12: To be stationed at City Center at Slack Plaza. Okay,
- 24:57Speaker 12: gonna take the V one hundred and tent. It's going
- 25:00Speaker 12: to be in the parade. We won't be in the van,
- 25:02Speaker 12: but we'll be doing color commentary with Chris and Bobby,
- 25:05Speaker 12: So okay, it'll be fun, fun, fun.
- 25:07Speaker 4: All right. So what advice do you have for miss
- 25:09Speaker 4: Spry here, who's going to be doing making her debut
- 25:11Speaker 4: as a commentator.
- 25:12Speaker 12: Well, first of all, it's gonna be easy for I
- 25:14Speaker 12: know she's thinking, oh gosh, I'm nervous about this, but
- 25:18Speaker 12: she will know all the groups, all the bands, everything,
- 25:22Speaker 12: and just relax and have fun. Just relax and have fun.
- 25:26Speaker 12: You're gonna be great. Just be yourself and make sure
- 25:28Speaker 12: you don't cuss.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Well, I was gonna say I could tell you one thing.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Sharing an office with Bobby Spry, I can tell you
- 25:35Speaker 4: she has no problem with relaxing. Not cussing could be
- 25:38Speaker 4: a problem. I'm just saying.
- 25:40Speaker 10: We joke about that. Radio people always joke about it.
- 25:44Speaker 12: But It's just something you know is not gonna happen
- 25:47Speaker 12: unless something really strange happens.
- 25:49Speaker 4: So yeah, it's all good. Yeah, all right, So Bobby,
- 25:52Speaker 4: what's the plan for the night? Get in there? What
- 25:54Speaker 4: do you what's the plan?
- 25:56Speaker 13: Well, I'm deciding if I'm gonna wear my Missus Claws outfit.
- 26:00Speaker 11: Yes, but yeah, I actually her nails go with We're
- 26:04Speaker 11: really both teams.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, my stylist.
- 26:09Speaker 13: But yeah, I am nervous about the cussing part.
- 26:14Speaker 4: You'll be fine. So what are you gonna say? Are
- 26:17Speaker 4: you gonna look at these little kids?
- 26:18Speaker 13: Man? Look at that little black No, I can just
- 26:20Speaker 13: see something happening, somebody falling, and you know when you go,
- 26:23Speaker 13: oh crap, But ye say the other word like that
- 26:26Speaker 13: would be.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Very casual for me.
- 26:28Speaker 3: I would the mother of boys said that a lot.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Mayor what do people need to know about the logistics
- 26:36Speaker 4: of this as far as coming into town, because I
- 26:38Speaker 4: know I saw earlier I was looking around and certain
- 26:41Speaker 4: streets are going to close early. I think I think
- 26:44Speaker 4: the Canaw County Courthouse I saw was going to close
- 26:47Speaker 4: at four I think today, or I think that's what
- 26:48Speaker 4: it was. What do people from that aspect need to
- 26:51Speaker 4: know people that are in town that are, like Jenny said,
- 26:54Speaker 4: where to park, give us.
- 26:56Speaker 11: Alow Bard from Greenboro Street to Clinton and Street will
- 26:59Speaker 11: be you know, as soon as you can get out.
- 27:02Speaker 11: Most people want to. But honestly, there are a lot
- 27:04Speaker 11: of folks who say, I'm just staying. I mean because
- 27:07Speaker 11: remember we've got the WVU Bowl game tonight as well,
- 27:10Speaker 11: So a lot of people are just locking it in.
- 27:13Speaker 11: A lot of folks who don't live or work downtown
- 27:15Speaker 11: are just coming early, locking it in, getting supper, watching
- 27:19Speaker 11: the prey, turning around and having drinks and watching the
- 27:21Speaker 11: game tonight. Obviously, anywhere outside of that kind of capital
- 27:30Speaker 11: Summer Street area which is where we go, but Ready
- 27:33Speaker 11: City Center is the place you want to be for
- 27:36Speaker 11: two reasons. Number one, if you haven't been down to
- 27:38Speaker 11: see the one hundred and sixty six fully decorated Christmas trees,
- 27:43Speaker 11: you need to come down. And by the way, windows too,
- 27:45Speaker 11: we have amazing, amazing businesses that decorated their windows as well.
- 27:51Speaker 11: But the Summer Street parking ridge, there's going to be
- 27:53Speaker 11: no entry and no exit. That's the biggie that I
- 27:56Speaker 11: want to let folks know because that's where most folks
- 27:59Speaker 11: have gotten stuck in the past. But any side outside
- 28:02Speaker 11: of that circle, and there are plenty of plenty, plenty
- 28:05Speaker 11: places to part from Dickinson to over at them all
- 28:11Speaker 11: and gosh, you as there's you're not going to believe this.
- 28:15Speaker 11: There are twenty seven two hundred and five parking spaces
- 28:18Speaker 11: in downtown Charleston.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Was it your job to count all of them?
- 28:21Speaker 11: Well, many years ago somebody said to me, there's no parking,
- 28:25Speaker 11: and so I called our parking director and.
- 28:26Speaker 3: I said, how many parking spaces we have?
- 28:28Speaker 9: No?
- 28:28Speaker 11: This closed the garages and stuff, and they are in
- 28:29Speaker 11: public Parkay, so there's over twenty seven thousand, So there
- 28:32Speaker 11: is a place to park. But keep in mind the
- 28:35Speaker 11: closer you get to the middle of the circle of
- 28:37Speaker 11: the parade, remember we're going to have plural thousands and
- 28:42Speaker 11: thousands of people because it's a place to be to night.
- 28:44Speaker 11: Place to be is in Charleston. So if you need
- 28:47Speaker 11: to kind of get out early because you got littles
- 28:49Speaker 11: and they've got to get to bed at a certain time,
- 28:51Speaker 11: you want to park, you know, park be the fairly yeah,
- 28:54Speaker 11: fairly farther away. But if you're staying downtown with your friends,
- 28:57Speaker 11: like my husband and our children are and then you know,
- 28:59Speaker 11: so who care? Actually I'm making booth good when walking
- 29:02Speaker 11: with me? All right, and I say walk loosely, we run.
- 29:06Speaker 13: And question about the parade route. I believe last year
- 29:10Speaker 13: it went all the way down to Washington, right, But
- 29:13Speaker 13: is it because of the construction that they've bumped it
- 29:16Speaker 13: back to Lee.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Yeah, just a little bit. And so.
- 29:20Speaker 11: Yeah, so we'll be going on Lee. It's a little different,
- 29:23Speaker 11: and honestly, I think that's good. I think that's good.
- 29:26Speaker 11: It's like a party. Everybody wants to be in your kitchen.
- 29:28Speaker 11: My living room is much bigger than my kitchen, but
- 29:30Speaker 11: everybody wants to be there. Everybody will want to be
- 29:33Speaker 11: lining Capital, lining summers. Kind of the bits of ends
- 29:36Speaker 11: of Courier and Lee corners are great if you're in
- 29:40Speaker 11: a corner position. Those are always the great if you
- 29:43Speaker 11: have littles, because that's also where I have been known
- 29:45Speaker 11: to dump buckets of candy on kids having small buckets.
- 29:49Speaker 4: I do want to mention you mentioned this Mayor before
- 29:51Speaker 4: we let you go, that people are that the businesses
- 29:54Speaker 4: are going to be open, So go to any of
- 29:56Speaker 4: our fine downtown restaurants, grab yourself. So we are we
- 29:59Speaker 4: are or one of our stations, our sister station ninety
- 30:02Speaker 4: six one KWS is going to be sitting up a
- 30:04Speaker 4: bar one oh one, Rob Real, our warning guy, is
- 30:07Speaker 4: going to be doing a live broadcast from six to
- 30:08Speaker 4: eight down there, and then stick around and watch the
- 30:10Speaker 4: bowl game after at bar one on one. I know
- 30:12Speaker 4: the Josh Pantry is going to be playing afterwards. We'll
- 30:15Speaker 4: have the Bowl game on and all of these places
- 30:17Speaker 4: we're going to matter. Actually a text to the show,
- 30:19Speaker 4: somebody asked about the Mountaineer pregame coverage begins at six.
- 30:23Speaker 4: I am. If I am incorrect, somebody that's smarter than
- 30:26Speaker 4: I can correct me. I think we are going to
- 30:28Speaker 4: start our coverage on Charleston's ESPN Radio, and then we
- 30:33Speaker 4: will have the bowl game here from the from the
- 30:35Speaker 4: Bowl Network, So we will actually have the Bowl game.
- 30:37Speaker 4: But I think our pregame coverage that we do, I
- 30:40Speaker 4: think is going to start on Charleston's ESPN Radio because
- 30:43Speaker 4: we'll have parade coverage here. I think. Now, if I'm
- 30:46Speaker 4: wrong about that, somebody can correct me. But I think
- 30:48Speaker 4: that is the case. But we will have the Bowl
- 30:50Speaker 4: game here.
- 30:50Speaker 11: In Restaurants open earlier, staying open late. Lots of specials
- 30:53Speaker 11: going on as well. I've heard, and actually I had
- 30:56Speaker 11: supper at Bar one on one last night, I had
- 30:58Speaker 11: sushe it was delicious.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Sleep on the wings at Bar one or one. I mean,
- 31:02Speaker 4: like everybody always talking about the burgers, and the burgers
- 31:04Speaker 4: are great. But the last time that I did a
- 31:06Speaker 4: live broadcast on ninety eight seven a mountain, I got
- 31:09Speaker 4: the wings, and the wings are absolutely fantastic.
- 31:11Speaker 2: There.

- 35:04Speaker 4: the courthouse is going to close at four today, so
- 35:07Speaker 4: probably officially six o'clock because the parade starts at seven,
- 35:10Speaker 4: but you probably want to be out of downtown Charleston

- 36:20Speaker 4: Sheriff Elect. He's Joe Crawford. He joins us this morning. Joe,
- 36:23Speaker 4: good morning, welcome to the show. Thank you, David, appreciate
- 36:25Speaker 4: your iff for having me. Well, so let me start
- 36:27Speaker 4: with the obvious question. You've been in along. How many
- 36:29Speaker 4: years have you been in law enforcement? Thirty eight total,
- 36:31Speaker 4: thirty eight years. So why at this point did you
- 36:34Speaker 4: say I want to be sheriff?
- 36:35Speaker 17: Well, it was, you know, it was something that really
- 36:40Speaker 17: was never on the radar. I mean some you know,
- 36:42Speaker 17: sometimes you'd have those conversations, but I think at the
- 36:45Speaker 17: end of the day, what came down to it. I
- 36:47Speaker 17: knew that sheriff Rustlers couldn't you know, he was turned
- 36:50Speaker 17: out and couldn't run again. So we started kicking around
- 36:52Speaker 17: the idea and I met with a family and the
- 36:55Speaker 17: people in my circle and said, hey, is this a
- 36:58Speaker 17: go or not?
- 36:59Speaker 4: And that's that's very important that you bring that up
- 37:01Speaker 4: because when you are a law person like that, the
- 37:05Speaker 4: whole family just got deputized pretty much. Try all those
- 37:09Speaker 4: around you absolutely, you know, and that's there.
- 37:11Speaker 17: You know, they see all the late night phone calls
- 37:15Speaker 17: and you know, getting woke up two three o'clock in
- 37:17Speaker 17: the morning when when things happened.
- 37:18Speaker 4: So you know, it was a family decision.
- 37:21Speaker 8: You know.
- 37:21Speaker 17: My family has been so supportive to Dave. I can't
- 37:24Speaker 17: begin to really tell people how how much I really
- 37:28Speaker 17: appreciate them. Sometimes they get left out and overlooked, not intentionally.
- 37:33Speaker 17: There's so many people to think, you know, there's so
- 37:36Speaker 17: many supporters people, you know, out on the campaign trail.
- 37:38Speaker 17: You're out there talking to people every day, and uh,
- 37:42Speaker 17: the response was great. Obviously, I'm very humbled, uh to
- 37:46Speaker 17: be able to be in this position this at this
- 37:49Speaker 17: point in my career as of winding down. That's what
- 37:52Speaker 17: I want to say, is I'm winding down. So you know,
- 37:57Speaker 17: I was asked in an interview previously, you know what,
- 38:00Speaker 17: if you had one word really to describe it, then
- 38:02Speaker 17: I said, pride.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Pride in Kadon County. Yeah, in your long form, why
- 38:07Speaker 4: did you want to be a law enforcement officer to
- 38:09Speaker 4: begin with? Back in the day? I mean, what made
- 38:11Speaker 4: you as a kid or a teenager whenever you decide
- 38:13Speaker 4: to go into this to say, that's what I want
- 38:15Speaker 4: to do.
- 38:16Speaker 17: As a kid, Dave, That's what we always talked about,
- 38:20Speaker 17: you know, playing cops and robbers. But the thing is,
- 38:23Speaker 17: I've been around it my whole life. My father is
- 38:25Speaker 17: first generation. He passed away in nineteen ninety eight. He
- 38:28Speaker 17: was the chief of South Charleston Police Departments, the hometown
- 38:31Speaker 17: I was born and raised in and grew up in.
- 38:35Speaker 17: And I was fortunate enough. I was only one of
- 38:37Speaker 17: five children, six children. I got a half brother that
- 38:41Speaker 17: followed up in my dad's footsteps. So I became second generation.
- 38:44Speaker 17: And now my son, Adam, he's third generation. He's with
- 38:49Speaker 17: the Sheriff's office now, and it's hard to believe. I
- 38:50Speaker 17: think he's been there almost seventeen sixteen years, so we
- 38:54Speaker 17: got three generations and we're proud of that. I mean,
- 38:57Speaker 17: at the end of the day, I think it's a
- 38:58Speaker 17: job that over the last several years, have the dynamics
- 39:03Speaker 17: have changed, sure, and I think, uh that's up to
- 39:06Speaker 17: us to be able to carry on the tradition. Uh,
- 39:10Speaker 17: you know, carry on the values, you know, hold us
- 39:12Speaker 17: to a higher standard. So you know, with all these
- 39:15Speaker 17: things coming into it, I've been around my whole life
- 39:18Speaker 17: and it's been very rewarding. I can't say enough how uh,
- 39:23Speaker 17: like I said, humble I am to be in this position.
- 39:25Speaker 4: I don't think people realize sometimes what a vast area
- 39:28Speaker 4: of Canaan County is and either are some similar issues,
- 39:33Speaker 4: but uh, you know, what's going on in Cabin Creek
- 39:35Speaker 4: may not be the same thing that's going on in
- 39:37Speaker 4: Tornado or in Saint Albans or whatever. It's a it's
- 39:39Speaker 4: a big old it's a big old county. Sheriff.
- 39:41Speaker 17: Sheriff elect nine hundred eleven square miles. How do you
- 39:44Speaker 17: think about that?
- 39:45Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 39:45Speaker 8: Nine.
- 39:46Speaker 17: Now there are larger counties, but the population is not there.
- 39:49Speaker 17: So by virtue, we're the largest sheriff's office in the
- 39:52Speaker 17: state and nine hundred eleven square miles from the head
- 39:57Speaker 17: of Cabin Creek to the west side of Saint Auburns
- 40:01Speaker 17: And and what I've found out during the campaign trail
- 40:04Speaker 17: day is that, yeah, it is different, you please, different
- 40:07Speaker 17: than you in some of those areas of the county.
- 40:10Speaker 17: And it's it is different from municipal law enforcement. So
- 40:16Speaker 17: that was that was a great learning experience for me,
- 40:20Speaker 17: learning that part of it uh in a rural setting
- 40:23Speaker 17: out out sometimes in the outer lying areas of Kanaw County.
- 40:27Speaker 4: And of course the big scourge for law enforcement has
- 40:31Speaker 4: been for some time. The only thing that changes is
- 40:33Speaker 4: the drug of choice. It is drugs. For years it
- 40:36Speaker 4: was it was pain pills, and then it became this
- 40:39Speaker 4: and that. Now fentanyl seems to be such a big
- 40:41Speaker 4: thing or math or whatever the case is. Are we
- 40:45Speaker 4: making any sort of headway in this whatsoever? And obviously
- 40:48Speaker 4: the majority of any law enforcement officers or agencies time
- 40:53Speaker 4: is going to be spent somehow battling drugs because even
- 40:57Speaker 4: the thefts and things like that, ninety nine point nine
- 41:00Speaker 4: of the time, as you well know, go back to
- 41:02Speaker 4: drug use. Talk about that absolutely.
- 41:04Speaker 17: You know, I worked undercover early in my career for
- 41:07Speaker 17: about eight years. It's probably the best time, most rewarding
- 41:11Speaker 17: time that I had as a law enforcement officer. We
- 41:13Speaker 17: did a lot of great things. I was with the
- 41:16Speaker 17: Metro Drug Unit, had great people, great leaders around me,
- 41:20Speaker 17: Terry Sayer, and we caught the old Crew. Matter of fact,
- 41:24Speaker 17: this last week we met, he came into town. We
- 41:27Speaker 17: got a bunch of old guys together and went out
- 41:28Speaker 17: and had dinner. But you know, the war on drugs
- 41:31Speaker 17: will never go away, Dave. I think that's something we
- 41:33Speaker 17: will continue to fight long after I'm gone. I think
- 41:38Speaker 17: we're in a good position. We're in a good posture
- 41:40Speaker 17: right now. Our partnerships with the city, county, and state.
- 41:45Speaker 17: I've never seen the level of cooperation as I have.
- 41:48Speaker 17: Most recently. We had a lot of big cases we
- 41:50Speaker 17: were part of, and I say we, I say the
- 41:52Speaker 17: Kenwawk County Sheriff's Office and M Dent. You know, we
- 41:56Speaker 17: took off the largest seizure in state history here with
- 42:01Speaker 17: Operation Smoking Mirrors. We played a part in that. Our
- 42:04Speaker 17: people were involved in that. So to say, like I said,
- 42:11Speaker 17: it's going to be a fight that we continue to fight.
- 42:13Speaker 17: It's not going to go away.
- 42:14Speaker 4: We know that.
- 42:15Speaker 17: I think we have positioned ourselves with our partners to
- 42:18Speaker 17: be able to continue to fight and do some great
- 42:21Speaker 17: things and continue to work big cases like that that
- 42:24Speaker 17: affect you know, the influx of basically heroin, meth and fentanyl.
- 42:30Speaker 17: They are lacing marijuana now with fentanyl. So and with fentanyl.
- 42:36Speaker 4: I mean again, I'm not an expert in this situation,
- 42:38Speaker 4: but just from talking to folks like yourself, you know
- 42:41Speaker 4: they've got this campaign going for the kids now saying
- 42:43Speaker 4: one pill can kill people don't realize. And I've had
- 42:46Speaker 4: those in law enforcement that have told me that we've
- 42:50Speaker 4: never seen anything like this, and all drugs are bad,
- 42:54Speaker 4: we get it, but when literally the first time can
- 42:58Speaker 4: can kill you, it's been I can to crack back
- 43:02Speaker 4: in the if you remember the crack days of the
- 43:03Speaker 4: nineteen eighties, that's what's one of but fin noise about
- 43:06Speaker 4: a thousand times more dangerous.
- 43:07Speaker 17: Talk about that, absolutely, I mean uh, And and the
- 43:11Speaker 17: bad part about it is they think it's harmless. They think, well,
- 43:14Speaker 17: it's just it's just a little bit of this or that,
- 43:16Speaker 17: But they don't know where it came from. You know,
- 43:18Speaker 17: we know it originated from probably from outside the country.
- 43:22Speaker 17: How many hands does it change before it gets to
- 43:24Speaker 17: the user? And you know, we we do. We do
- 43:28Speaker 17: a great job because we focus on both aspects of that.
- 43:31Speaker 17: And I think this is worth a discussion maybe down
- 43:33Speaker 17: a road later on. But we want to help the
- 43:36Speaker 17: people that want to be helped, but we want to
- 43:38Speaker 17: prosecute and put the people in jail that that doesn't
- 43:40Speaker 17: want to be helped. Did that want to come out
- 43:42Speaker 17: here and try to poison you know, our people? Uh
- 43:45Speaker 17: So there's a fine line there. I think we want
- 43:48Speaker 17: to posture ourselves to be to be able to help
- 43:51Speaker 17: people that want to help, But the same token, we
- 43:53Speaker 17: still got to fight the fight and keep doing what
- 43:56Speaker 17: we're doing to take those dangerous drugs off the street.
- 43:59Speaker 4: Before we let you go. We hitd a text here
- 44:01Speaker 4: someone wanted to know, are you going to do one
- 44:03Speaker 4: term or have you thought about that yet? You haven't officially,
- 44:05Speaker 4: Eve Nim. You know, the paint's not drawing the door yet,
- 44:07Speaker 4: So I guess have you thought about doing a next
- 44:09Speaker 4: term or are you just gonna take it like one
- 44:11Speaker 4: term at a time.
- 44:12Speaker 17: I guess I think you know, we look at it.
- 44:15Speaker 17: Me being in this position is chief Deputy for three years.
- 44:17Speaker 17: I think it was a transition. Wise, it couldn't have
- 44:20Speaker 17: worked out been any better for us because one thing
- 44:24Speaker 17: that did come up, you know here in the last
- 44:27Speaker 17: couple of months, is we had eight or nine retirements.
- 44:29Speaker 4: Some of them were the senior staff.
- 44:31Speaker 17: So that's what we've kind of been in house looking
- 44:33Speaker 17: at and filling those positions in house the last couple
- 44:36Speaker 17: of months with the you know, consulting Sheriff Rutherford and
- 44:39Speaker 17: the senior staff and what goes into making those selections
- 44:43Speaker 17: to fill those slots.
- 44:44Speaker 4: So that that has been helpful.
- 44:46Speaker 17: For me being able to come from within and see
- 44:49Speaker 17: that and hit the ground run in day one.
- 44:51Speaker 4: All right, we have a text here too, so is
- 44:52Speaker 4: please tell mister Crawford congratulations and good luck. If he
- 44:55Speaker 4: needs a posse, the good guys in Pinch will help you.
- 44:58Speaker 4: According to a Texter, give me about thirty seconds over
- 45:01Speaker 4: time here, but about thirty seconds. What are we going
- 45:03Speaker 4: to do to get more people to want to go
- 45:04Speaker 4: into law enforcement? Because it's a problem everywhere.
- 45:07Speaker 17: David, that's a great, great point to end on it.
- 45:10Speaker 17: Our biggest challenge is recruiting and retention, and it's just
- 45:13Speaker 17: not here locally it's reasonable, it's statewide, it's a national problem.
- 45:19Speaker 17: So we got to, you know, we got to put
- 45:21Speaker 17: our efforts and thoughts into how we can recruit and
- 45:24Speaker 17: retain people. Obviously, pay and equipment and training, all those
- 45:28Speaker 17: things come into play. So those are some of the
- 45:31Speaker 17: things that we'll be looking at to continue moving the
- 45:34Speaker 17: department forward with technology. And you know, we got to
- 45:37Speaker 17: take care of our men and women out there. They're
- 45:38Speaker 17: out there every day and they do a great job.
- 45:40Speaker 17: We're so proud of the men and women of the
- 45:42Speaker 17: Sheriff's off.
- 45:43Speaker 4: We did have one other text, with all fairness and
- 45:45Speaker 4: I promise I'll let you go, it said, a higher
- 45:47Speaker 4: standard for police is a good thing in this regard.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Will Sheriff Crawford make disciplinary records and accessive force complaints
- 45:52Speaker 4: accessible to the public and a searchable online database with
- 45:56Speaker 4: appropriate privacy safeguards. Is that something that you've looked at yet.
- 45:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 46:00Speaker 4: We have the body cameras.
- 46:01Speaker 17: I mean, I think that takes out a lot of
- 46:03Speaker 17: the guessing, you know, but the cameras don't lie. And
- 46:07Speaker 17: that was one of the things we wanted to the
- 46:10Speaker 17: initiatives that we started under this past administration was the
- 46:13Speaker 17: body cameras that that will help. That puts to bet
- 46:16Speaker 17: a lot of the frivolous complaints. And obviously my track record,
- 46:21Speaker 17: you go back and look my track record from Saint
- 46:23Speaker 17: Albans to hear when people do wrong and things they're
- 46:28Speaker 17: not held to that standard. We hold them to that
- 46:29Speaker 17: standard and we take appropriate action. So within the confines
- 46:33Speaker 17: of Chapter seven, which civil service, that's what we fall under.
- 46:38Speaker 4: We will continue to do that. That's not gonna change.
- 46:40Speaker 17: And we do set to bar high and our expectations
- 46:43Speaker 17: and standards are high.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Cheerflect Joe Crawford. I appreciate you being here man. Thanks
- 46:47Speaker 4: like good luck to you. Well, we'll be talking several times.

- 50:15Speaker 4: was in nineteen seventy six when a four point six

- 50:56Speaker 4: with people suddenly not knowing how to drive? Now? Granted
- 51:00Speaker 4: on Sunday and yesterday it was raining heavily here in
- 51:03Speaker 4: the Kanal Valley, but emergency services and I wanted to
- 51:07Speaker 4: get to this yesterday and I didn't get a chance.
- 51:09Speaker 4: Emergency services reported something like five accidents in the same
- 51:15Speaker 4: area near the Washington Street westbound exit in a couple
- 51:20Speaker 4: of hour period on Sunday alone, five accidents and about
- 51:23Speaker 4: a one to two hour period simply in that one area.
- 51:28Speaker 4: And then at the time that the folks in Huntington
- 51:31Speaker 4: and surrounding areas were feeling an earthquake and I was
- 51:33Speaker 4: getting out of town yesterday around four thirty, there was
- 51:35Speaker 4: yet another accident in that same area, three or four
- 51:39Speaker 4: cars involved. Their people. Just slow down, put down the phones,
- 51:45Speaker 4: and law enforcement folks will tell you there's more accidents
- 51:47Speaker 4: in rain than there are in snow, so it's really
