- 0:43Hello and welcome to For The Love of Nature, a podcast where we tell you everything you need to know about nature and probably more than you wanted to know.
- 0:49I'm Laura.
- 0:50And I'm Katie.
- 0:51And today we're gonna be talking about another episode of Crypto Zoology.
- 0:56Yeah, yeah.
- 0:57You know those animals that some claim are real, others claim are not.
- 1:04Jury's still out on some things.
- 1:07I mean, listen, once again, I know I keep bringing this up, but over Covid, the US government announced that UFOs are real I did mine.
- 1:18I'm never letting anyone forget this.
- 1:19I'm never going to, because I still to this day will bring that up and there's always somebody in the room that'll go, what?
- 1:26I'm like, here we go.
- 1:27Lesson learned.
- 1:28And the people who are like really close to like work colleagues and stuff who have heard my spiel every single time, they just laugh cuz they know what's coming.
- 1:35But if the government admits that there's UFOs that.
- 1:39Cannot be of like any known human technology.
- 1:45Yeah.
- 1:45Something's gotta be flying it.
- 1:48And then the other one I did was Bigfoot Hide and go seek champion.
- 1:52Yeah.
- 1:52Your Bigfoot story's the last time.
- 1:54Or giving me the heebie gbs.
- 1:55I still think about it every once in a while and it's just, give me the shivers.
- 1:58There are some really creepy gardening and the one was like leaning against a tree, watching her.
- 2:02Yes.
- 2:03Heck no.
- 2:03Move that very day.
- 2:05Yeah.
- 2:05I would too.
- 2:06Because you could feel like, yeah, you just feel like you're being watched.
- 2:09Then you look up because that's always anytime you're outside, you know what I mean?
- 2:14Like that's always your back of the mind fear.
- 2:18Well, and I Right for sure the back of the mind fear.
- 2:20But like the, you know, the woods is like my happy place.
- 2:23It no longer be my happy place.
- 2:25No.
- 2:25If I thought somebody was out there freaking terrified.
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:29I'd be done.
- 2:30I couldn't do it anymore.
- 2:31Yeah.
- 2:32All right, so before we jump into that, do you, did you have Nature News?
- 2:35Yeah, I was just gonna bring up something real quick.
- 2:37This article is titled Good News Found After Analysis of Wolf Discovered in New York.
- 2:43So this was, this is just published but a wolf was killed in December of 2021 in Cherry Valley, which is a, was in Otago County, New York.
- 2:52And although that was a while ago, for over a year, they thought it was a coyote that had been killed, but I guess they were doing some DNA stuff with it.
- 2:59And so it's actually given some insight into, you know, potential wolf populations in New York state and doing some different, like DNA stuff.
- 3:10They can actually tell what an animal was eating prior, which is just, you know, pretty crazy cool.
- 3:16Yeah.
- 3:17So they don't what, from what they could find, the wolf had not been feeding on any.
- 3:23like domesticated livestock, which is good news.
- 3:25So like Yeah.
- 3:26Very good news because they are moving into the state, not to worry.
- 3:29Yeah.
- 3:29And that it had never been domesticated at any point in its life because it hadn't ever eaten that kind of stuff.
- 3:35So it was a truly wild wolf.
- 3:37That's crazy.
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:38So there are a lot of areas in the United States now where wolves are actually starting to move south.
- 3:44They're expanding their territories, they're adapting more, and they're interbreeding with coyotes.
- 3:48So, you know, coy wolfs is a term that some more and more people are hearing about.
- 3:52So we don't have to be afraid of large predators.
- 3:56Mm-hmm.
- 3:57we just have to be aware if they're around.
- 4:00But yeah.
- 4:00Kind of a cool thing that, you know, wow, what if wolves really come back to New York state and then that's just a hop, skip and a jump from Pennsylvania.
- 4:06Yeah, no, it really is.
- 4:07That's kind of like, the top down here.
- 4:09Still there have been more and more because Jaguars in Texas used to be.
- 4:14Native here.
- 4:15Not so much anymore, but there's still always folks that are gonna say, oh, hey I've spotted that.
- 4:22Uh, get it.
- 4:23Um mm-hmm.
- 4:24So that, you know, they're, they, it's the big cats.
- 4:27So we have we have Ocelots, yeah, ocelots here.
- 4:31Which are spotted.
- 4:32Yeah.
- 4:32Which are spotted really big.
- 4:34No, so freaking, so freaking small.
- 4:37And then there are the jaggies jago undies that are, that I don't, they don't look anything.
- 4:43They almost look more like you're Otter like kind of the cat otter.
- 4:47Yeah.
- 4:48Yeah.
- 4:48Definitely not the same.
- 4:51I don't even know how to, they're a cat.
- 4:54A cat Otter.
- 4:55Yeah.
- 4:56Cat Otter, I guess.
- 4:57Just a weird creature.
- 4:59But yeah, so there, there's always like reports of people saying that there's jaguars.
- 5:03I don't think, but that's like in Pennsylvania too constantly.
- 5:06I can't tell you the amount of people that have told me that they have seen, heard or know someone that has seen or heard a mountain lion.
- 5:13Oh yeah.
- 5:14Oh yeah.
- 5:15I think I've told this story before about the one time I was running in Western Pennsylvania, like on our property and I Oh, the Bobcat found a bobcat, yeah.
- 5:23That I was running around and I was just running laps.
- 5:25Cause I used to play soccer and so I was running, we had seven acres and so I was running around the yard.
- 5:30you know, when I say yard, you know it's seven acres, so right.
- 5:33Little bit, little bit bigger.
- 5:34And one of our smallest dog, who was just a SAS pot and a half daisy, she was barking at something in the weeds and I figured it was a neighbor's cat or whatever.
- 5:44And so it was her and then our black lab at the time, and they were just barking, barking, barking.
- 5:49And I went over, pulled him back, pulled the, like the high grass apart and it was just a bobcat sitting there, hiss and just panting.
- 5:57Scared.
- 5:58The beji.
- 5:59Oh yeah.
- 5:59It was clearly terrified but scared.
- 6:01The beji outta me.
- 6:03Oh, I'm sure I ran back so fast.
- 6:05I mean, thankfully Daisy's 26 pounds and so, you know, so she was tiny, so I could just swoop her up and run, run with her over my shoulder kind of thing.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:12The black lab he was a good protective dog, but still a black lab, so he's just like, okay, I'm coming.
- 6:18Yeah, we're coming with you two kind of thing.
- 6:20But yeah, so Bobcats I would see a lot, but yeah.
- 6:23Jaguars down here, that would be kind of crazy.
- 6:25I think the last time one was officially spotted in Texas, I wanna say was like the forties or fifties, like the last official, official one.
- 6:33Yeah, yeah.
- 6:33Yeah.
- 6:34Mountain lions.
- 6:35I wouldn't, I know there are.
- 6:36Oh yeah.
- 6:37So, so I wouldn't be surprised if you had Mountain Lion.
- 6:40Yeah, no, we definitely, yeah.
- 6:42Definitely have Mountain Lion and there's a Central America and mm-hmm.
- 6:45Mexico and stuff.
- 6:45Mm-hmm.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:46And like down by Big Bend National Park and everything.
- 6:49I mean, there's just nothing Yeah.
- 6:52Out there.
- 6:52And that habitat just crazy.
- 6:54Crazy.
- 6:55Alrighty.
- 6:56So do you wanna talk about, I mean, things that Cryptids Yeah.
- 7:00Some things that also have reports, but may or may not Yeah.
- 7:06Be really there.
- 7:08Yeah.
- 7:08Let me, my two.
- 7:11let me think here.
- 7:12You got a good segue.
- 7:13Otherwise I'll go.
- 7:14No, you can, you can.
- 7:15Both of mine.
- 7:16One I've never heard of before, which I always love coming across stuff I've never heard of.
- 7:20I too, I have one that I know well and one that I've never heard of.
- 7:22Yeah.
- 7:23The one I've never heard of.
- 7:25And then the one I have heard of.
- 7:28But I didn't realize the origins of where it came from.
- 7:31I'll leave it at that.
- 7:32Yeah, yeah.
- 7:33But you can let it go first if you want.
- 7:35Well, I was gonna say, because we were just talking about Bigfoot, I would like to talk about the Chik.
- 7:40Ooh.
- 7:40Which is a very similar Uhhuh and I had never heard of it before, but I was like, oh, what's this?
- 7:46And then look more into it and was like, Ooh.
- 7:48Mm-hmm.
- 7:48So it's pretty much the Siberian version of Bigfoot with some key differences.
- 7:53So it is described as a human-like with broad shoulders, a large protruding brow, long matted hair, no neck, and occasionally bearing unusually co colored body hair or fur.
- 8:07I always have to describe them like so ugly, you know what I mean?
- 8:11Yeah.
- 8:11Poor, poor Bigfoot.
- 8:12They're like but the big difference between them and Bigfoot is that.
- 8:17They are often reported as wearing animal skins, making them more human than Bigfoot.
- 8:24So like they wear like reindeer hides.
- 8:26Yeah.
- 8:26And Bigfoot never wears clothes.
- 8:29just out their free balling.
- 8:30We're in Siberia, so like Yeah.
- 8:32Can't blame'em.
- 8:33It's cold.
- 8:34Yeah.
- 8:34Yeah.
- 8:35They're also called Mullin, meaning bandits because they have been known to, or it's been said that they've do midnight raids on Barnes and dwellings.
- 8:44I mean, if there's gonna be anything that would live someplace that we would have no clue it would be Siberia.
- 8:52Siberia.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:53Just a vast land of nothing.
- 8:55Yeah.
- 8:55And another difference between it and Bigfoot, although I didn't find much information about this.
- 9:02Just in passing, just as a little sprinkle of that Yeah.
- 9:06And sometimes How do you, how do you spell it?
- 9:08Flesh.
- 9:09Ew.
- 9:10That's us So possibly, uh, it's spelled different ways.
- 9:14So the, okay.
- 9:15You can do C H u c h U N A A or y a or the mullen, which is m u l e n.
- 9:23Still the same thing.
- 9:25So yeah.
- 9:26Just looks like the drawing depictions just look like, almost like a huge neanderthal, right?
- 9:31Exactly.
- 9:31Yes.
- 9:32So, but the one picture that I saw was just totally a neanderthal.
- 9:36But this one they are saying is covered in hair, so it's like a hairy, really hairy, big, giant person.
- 9:42Usually described as like seven feet tall.
- 9:45Okay.
- 9:45Yeah.
- 9:45Um, the reports are coming from rural, rural, boy, that's a hard word, rural Siberia.
- 9:51Which is such a funny concept.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:53Cause it isn't all of Siberia.
- 9:55So like listeners, if anyone's from Siberia, I'm sorry, but I picture it as there's just being nothing there.
- 10:02Most accounts are coming from the northeast, although there is the occasional southeast one, and they are possibly living in the mountains or on the tundra in that area.
- 10:13Typically, the reports are coming from native Siberians, such as the, and guys, I'm sorry, I get it's probably the Yacus or the peoples.
- 10:22Sometimes other rural people.
- 10:24But those in the main ones is the native peoples that are reporting this.
- 10:28And these reports are hundreds of years old with native people's stories going back even longer, like possibly thousands of years.
- 10:34So let's get into some of these reports.
- 10:37These reports were taken.
- 10:39Seriously.
- 10:40I mean, like I said, there, there's been, it's been going on for hundreds of years, but things really started being taken seriously in 1928 when the Soviet Union sent out search parties because they were like, oh, geez, all right.
- 10:50Like, let's go find, let's get this.
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:53Yeah.
- 10:53There was actually a formal report made on the chia that was presented to the commission for the discovery and study of antiquarian curiosities, uh, attached to the Western Siberian section of the Russian Geographical Society.
- 11:08So lots of stuff there, but there was an official report made, and the report recommended that detailed investigations and systematic studies occur before the Chichen became extinct.
- 11:18So, huh.
- 11:19They believed it was there.
- 11:21It.
- 11:22like something interesting was gonna go away.
- 11:24And so in 1933 there was a professor that called upon the government to abolish the hunting of these people on the grounds that all people of the U S S R deserved equal protection.
- 11:34But little was done about it.
- 11:36Um, so apparently they were being hunted if they were there.
- 11:41Yeah.
- 11:41Um, various scientists.
- 11:43Yeah.
- 11:43Cuz then, because then like, all right, so then you have to ask the question like, how far did this go?
- 11:49Okay.
- 11:49Let's just say if it was a myth, were there that many people willing to be like, yeah, I hunted one and I got it.
- 11:54You know what I mean?
- 11:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:57So there was a, there's been a number of scientists who've been like, yep.
- 12:01So in 1970s, one of the geologists, so these surveys actually went on for a long time through the geographical society.
- 12:09Like they were doing other things, but I guess while they're out there, they were also seeing it I mean, while we're out here, let's just log this.
- 12:16Yeah.
- 12:16You know, big creature.
- 12:18So in 1970s, a geologist out there was hearing lots of local tales, but concluded that the chiia must be dying out, like if it was probably gone by 1970.
- 12:30But in 1985, there was a British Anth, British anthropologist who claimed to have seen one with her own eyes.
- 12:35That in particular, Cunya was dubbed Cheney, AK the marked one, because he had a white patch on his forearm.
- 12:42And so that's what the locals called him.
- 13:16Hmm.
- 13:17And she said she saw him a newspaper reported on a story that in 1957, hunters killed a cunya and brought back its body, but that body disappeared when they brought it back to town.
- 13:26Of course you did.
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:28In 2001 and 2002, reports of strange ape-like creatures were found in.
- 13:34One was the size of a large dog covered in hair except for face and feet and had a tail.
- 13:39And then there are several versions about what happened to that body.
- 13:42Again, gone, but for many different reasons, possibly, also only the size of a large dog then.
- 13:49Then it must have been a kid like, yeah, right.
- 13:51Yeah.
- 13:52Ooh.
- 13:52And then the other actually had golden colored fur, and that guy found it in the wilderness and left it there.
- 13:59Which I mean, they say, I mean, just like any animal, there's, you know, color variations, but I know with Bigfoot, yeah.
- 14:04I mean, there's all sorts of color variations, so, yeah.
- 14:08Well, right.
- 14:08And I guess if, if it was very humanoid, it could have different colored hair just like we do.
- 14:13Mm-hmm.
- 14:14Yeah.
- 14:14There were tales of a strange being wandering the remote forest of tunguska near the scenes of devastation.
- 14:21Okay.
- 14:21So I was like, what does that mean?
- 14:23Scenes of devastation?
- 14:24What does that mean?
- 14:25Katie?
- 14:25I've never heard about this.
- 14:27No.
- 14:27So the tunguska blast happened in 19 19 0 8 when a 12 megaton explosion.
- 14:36Okay.
- 14:36Just that's giant.
- 14:39Yeah.
- 14:3912 megaton explosion, flattened, 830 square miles of forest, possibly killing three people and s maybe right?
- 14:50I guess who knows who was living out there.
- 14:52Exactly.
- 14:52Like they don't even know that.
- 14:55And also that in 830 square miles there might have been three people.
- 15:00Um, yeah.
- 15:00Right.
- 15:01but.
- 15:03If you look at these pictures, it looks like an atomic bomb went off there.
- 15:06And so sci, what scientists think happened though, this was in 1908, was likely an atmospheric explosion when 160 to 200 foot asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere and exploded in the atmosphere.
- 15:19So there's no impact crater, but it is the only asteroid that we know of in human life.
- 15:25Like in our lifetime.
- 15:26Like in, I think I have heard about this.
- 15:28Yeah.
- 15:28Because of that.
- 15:29Like there, that's the only thing I, this is the only time.
- 15:31This is that hu.
- 15:32While humans have been around.
- 15:34Yeah.
- 15:34Reporting.
- 15:35I think that's the history.
- 15:35I think that's the only thing that I know like that triggers something.
- 15:40I'm like, oh yeah, that's it.
- 15:41If an asteroid was gonna hit the planet that it decided to hit Siberia, Siberia, not like India or you know.
- 15:48Yeah.
- 15:48Oh goodness.
- 15:49No impact crater.
- 15:52It's a weird place.
- 15:53Okay.
- 15:53Yeah.
- 15:54So back to the Chiia.
- 15:55So there are tales of a strange being who wanders that devastated area.
- 16:00The nomadic reindeer herdsman of Siberia have reported ci a gigantic gray humanoid figure.
- 16:07About 50 miles north of that river.
- 16:09They saw a man who seemed to be over eight feet in height picking berries and drinking water from a stream.
- 16:14And he's just living his good life out there.
- 16:17Like, just leave him alone.
- 16:18his mind and his business, mon Mongol herdsman have also reported seeing them and others who have so supposedly investigated one of man's greatest mysteries.
- 16:31The Tunguska blast have also claimed to have seen the chia.
- 16:35So is there a connection the world may never know?
- 16:38Yeah.
- 16:39So where is this coming from?
- 16:43Actually, unlike some of the other ones, you know, I did the CPAC Cobra last time and there was some very clear cut, like, where is this coming from?
- 16:50Yes, animals me, manji animals, There really is no clear cut.
- 16:57What this could be.
- 16:58Well, because I mean, possibly it's so isolated.
- 17:02I'm okay.
- 17:03Listen, just Well, it's these, I mean, stories of humanoid hair, humanoid creatures are literally reported all over the world.
- 17:09There there are, there are.
- 17:11We've got Bigfoot.
- 17:11Yes, there's the Yeti.
- 17:13We've got this.
- 17:14So, so Could it be really.
- 17:18big hairy dudes.
- 17:19Or could it have just been some guy out there wearing like a giant for Exactly.
- 17:24That's what I was gonna say.
- 17:24It's, it, it's so isolated.
- 17:27It literally could be like a man with gigantic theism, you know what I mean?
- 17:31That just like, yeah, it's hereditary.
- 17:34They just keep to themselves.
- 17:35They see people every once in a while and they just decided to stay away.
- 17:38You know what I mean?
- 17:39The who knows.
- 17:40The only other thing that some people have put forth and I'm like, maybe, maybe they were possibly a remnant, paleo Asiatic people, or some people say Neanderthals, although Neanderthals were believed to have went extinct 40,000 years ago.
- 17:57Yeah.
- 17:58And only ever reached heights of five and a half feet.
- 18:00Yeah.
- 18:00This is significantly taller.
- 18:02But a Paleo Asiatic people like just some other, like some other thing.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:08Super primitive.
- 18:09Not, we're not talking missing link here, but like some, it's a different branch.
- 18:13Primitive humanoid.
- 18:15maybe, because remember we've talked about this in the podcast before.
- 18:19There were wooly mammoth still living in the Arctic circle mm-hmm.
- 18:23until 1650 bc which is not actually that long.
- 18:27That long.
- 18:27No, it's not that long ago at all.
- 18:29So if they, if the wooly ma and, and w where there people are seeing this we are within, in Siberia is part of it is in the Arctic circle.
- 18:37Yeah.
- 18:37Like where they're finding and seeing these people.
- 18:39Yeah.
- 18:41This is where they're finding like wooly mammoth carcasses.
- 18:44Yeah.
- 18:44And, uh, wooly rhino carcasses and things.
- 18:46Yeah.
- 18:46So maybe a primitive people could survive that long.
- 18:50Well, that's what I'm saying.
- 18:50It's so, it's probably if they were, it's so isolated.
- 18:54It's true that they probably did die out Yeah.
- 18:57In this century.
- 18:58Because let's be real, people would have hunted them if they were like, this is terrifying.
- 19:03Yeah.
- 19:04Terrifying.
- 19:04Yeah.
- 19:05And you know, everybody talks about that's where may or may not people have been crossing the barrier straight and where all of our ancestors have come from.
- 19:11So, maybe a primitive people, I don't know.
- 19:15Hopefully they're not actually eating flesh of people because geez, again, definitely you're asking to be hunted to extinction in that case.
- 19:22I was gonna say it, it just goes back to the fear like humans are very much so fear induced, like just it's scary.
- 19:29Kill it.
- 19:30Yeah.
- 19:30When, when it comes to anything like of mystery and so, yeah.
- 19:35But yeah the anthropologist saying that she saw the one that they named is interesting.
- 19:40Yeah.
- 19:41Cuz And you, if it wasn't chaun, was it just a person with gigantic cism who was Harry and they just kept that person?
- 19:48Or they or they are like primitive, poor pe you know, peoples of the land, they don't have normal clothing.
- 19:54They do, they are hunting whatever's out there.
- 19:58Yeah.
- 19:58You know what I mean?
- 19:59And, and like more so.
- 20:00More so than the aboriginal people who live there right now.
- 20:03Like the Yes.
- 20:03People who are reporting them are considered natives.
- 20:06Yeah.
- 20:06But like we're talking like Right primitive.
- 20:08Primitive, primitive.
- 20:09Possibly.
- 20:10Not even in like language speaking.
- 20:12Yes.
- 20:12Yeah.
- 20:13Yeah.
- 20:13Again, like if it were to happen, it would be in Siberia, cuz there's Yeah, there are in some deep jungle somewhere.
- 20:20Yeah.
- 20:20Dang crazy.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:23All righty.
- 20:23Well the first one that I'm gonna do is, this one I have never heard of, and it's the black shuck.
- 20:31No, no, I hadn't heard of it either.
- 20:33S H u C K.
- 20:34Yep.
- 20:35Like okay.
- 20:36Yep.
- 20:37Like shucking corn.
- 20:38Yep.
- 20:38That's what I was just gonna, I was gonna say I was like, I don't, I don't wanna show my Western Pennsylvania too much, but like shucking corn Um, so the black shuck is a ghostly black dog that is said to Rome at the coastline and countryside of East Angular England.
- 20:54The black.
- 20:55Okay.
- 20:55I, this is ringing a bell.
- 20:57Yeah.
- 20:57From stories that I've read, but I don't know if I did, knew it was called the black shuck.
- 21:01I No clue.
- 21:02No clue.
- 21:03So the origins and the legends are, again, kind of unclear because kind of like the chupacabra.
- 21:12They think it's a, like a black gangly dog.
- 21:15So there's tons of reasons of what it could be, but right where it came from.
- 21:20So what's making it not a normal dog?
- 21:22Yeah, well, so it does date back centuries and is well known, well, very well known British folklore.
- 21:28The origins of the legend are unclear, but is believed to have been passed through oral tradition.
- 21:32So again, just one story after another.
- 21:34Some believe that the name shuck may have been derived from the old English word which means demonn or devil.
- 21:44So that's intense.
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:45So black.
- 21:46Black devil.
- 21:48The location of where the legend come from is primarily the coastal regions of East Anglo, which includes the countries of Norfolk and Sofo Suffolk.
- 21:57The area has a long history of folklore and superstition with tales of witches, ghosts, and other supernatural creatures dating back centuries.
- 22:05So this is already an area that does talk about legends and folklore and all kinds of stuff.
- 22:12Anyway, so it's just like, let's just add another one to, to the mix here.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:19So there are various versions of the BackCheck legend, but most of'em describe a large black dog that appears on dark stormy nights, often accompanied by thunder and lightning.
- 22:30The dog is, and this, sorry, go ahead.
- 22:32This is on which side of Britain?
- 22:34Uh, you said it was the East?
- 22:36No wait, it just coastal regions of East Angular.
- 22:41Okay.
- 22:41And CLO includes the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk.
- 22:45No.
- 22:45Nor focus Suffolk.
- 22:46Got it.
- 22:46Yeah.
- 22:46Thank you.
- 22:47Keep going.
- 22:47Yep.
- 22:47So let's see here.
- 22:48So, yeah, so it appears in Stormy nights, accompanied by thunder and lightning, the dog is said to have glowing red eyes and be the size of a calf or even larger.
- 22:56Some versions of the story describe the black shuck as a harbinger of death or a symbol of impending doom.
- 23:04Yikes.
- 23:04This is for all you Harry Potter fans out there.
- 23:07This is the Grim.
- 23:08It's a dog.
- 23:08It's like a black dog that, that says you're gonna die.
- 23:12Oh.
- 23:13I'm not a Harry Potter nerd, but that's definitely where this is like that.
- 23:17Gotcha.
- 23:17That came from, that's a perversion of it.
- 23:19Yeah.
- 23:19I mean, if it's well-known British, it would make sense.
- 23:23Definit.
- 23:24So, yeah, so it's a symbol of death or impending doom.
- 23:27Others suggest that the creature is a protector watching over the people of that area and warding off evil spirits.
- 23:33So you have some people that are like, Nope, this is all bad.
- 23:37You have other, and then others that are like, Nope.
- 23:39It's protecting us.
- 23:41Opposite, yes.
- 23:42Opposite translation.
- 23:43Yeah.
- 23:43For interpretations, I should say.
- 23:45So, as far as sightings go, there have been several firsthand accounts of seeing the creature.
- 23:49One of the most famous sightings occurred in 1577 in the town of Blythe.
- 23:55Blackberg and Suffolk, according to the account, a large black dog burst into the church during a thunderstorm and killed two people before just disappearing.
- 24:06Yay.
- 24:06Go.
- 24:07So clearly.
- 24:08It's not like a normal dog if it's just gonna bust into a church of all places.
- 24:13Very least a rabid dog.
- 24:14Yeah.
- 24:15But busted into a church during a storm and Oh, right.
- 24:18You'd definitely be thinking demon.
- 24:19You're like, yeah, this is, this is Satan.
- 24:21Yeah.
- 24:21Another notable sighting occurred in 1901 when a man walking home from a pub claimed to have been chased by a large black dog with glowing eyes, which again, let's just pause A man walking alone home from a pub.
- 24:39And he said that he saw large black dog with glowing.
- 24:42From a bar and also glow eyes.
- 24:43Like as many of us animal people know, many animals experience the red eye effect.
- 24:49Yes.
- 24:50Or eye shine.
- 24:50When light is shining into their eyes, they glow, but also saw if the light was coming.
- 24:56You know what I mean?
- 24:56But the sobriety of the man is also questionable.
- 24:59Yeah.
- 24:59I'm not judging him.
- 25:00He was, even if he was so cold sober Yeah.
- 25:02It could still, could've still seen glowing eyes and in 19 Oh be, yeah.
- 25:06And in, in 1901, they're, he's not gonna necessarily know that.
- 25:10Other accounts describe encounters with black shuck, und deserted roads or an isolated fields.
- 25:15Dude, I would literally poop my pants.
- 25:17Right?
- 25:18This is, okay.
- 25:18This, this right here.
- 25:20This is little Laura's nightmare.
- 25:22Okay.
- 25:22Because my growing up, my greatest fear was of black wolves for many reasons.
- 25:29Interesting.
- 25:30Started with Beauty and the beast, and then the next thing or.
- 25:33If not eating the beast, then definitely the never ending story.
- 25:36Cause that terrified iconic wolf.
- 25:37Yes.
- 25:38Then there was, there was a movie called Benji about a little dog.
- 25:40Oh yeah.
- 25:41And, and there was a black, and that tried to eat him.
- 25:43So little R was like, black wolves are horrible.
- 25:46So for the next, like, I don't know, eight to 10 years I would see that wolf in my basement in the hallway at night.
- 25:55I terrified.
- 25:56So like me grown up, Laura, just having an experience with some like cold black dog on a back road.
- 26:03I would first of all never be on a back road alone by myself, But I would just, just died, be done here.
- 26:09Like I would be dead.
- 26:09It would've pretended my death because I would've died of a heart attack.
- 26:13Yeah, right.
- 26:14Well, besides you, there were numerous sightings and reports over the c.
- 26:20Again, there's no concrete evidence that the black shuck exists.
- 26:24Skeptics argue that sightings are simply the result of people's imaginations or the exaggeration of natural phenomenon, such as large dogs, you know, and then like the thunderstorm.
- 26:33Yeah.
- 26:33If you see a German shepherd at night be freaking terrifying.
- 26:36Yes.
- 26:36Or like a lot of them can be black or like an Irish wolf hound and who are, or massive.
- 26:43Yes.
- 26:44Yeah.
- 26:44So however, those who believe that the legend of the black shuck.
- 26:49they do have some basis in re in reality here.
- 26:52So some historians have suggested that the legend may have been based on the presence from the presence of large black dogs owned by Vikings who settled in the area centuries ago.
- 27:02So they brought over like big, large, like protecting dogs.
- 27:07Yeah.
- 27:08That were black and then they just either got away whatever had, you know, feral dogs, whatever.
- 27:14Others have suggested that the legend may have been inspired by ancient Celtic legends of spectral dogs that roamed the countryside.
- 27:20So again, just more legends.
- 27:22Yeah, this is very similar and it reminds me of what's the, there's a Sherlock Holmes, the Hound of the Baskervilles.
- 27:27Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:29Like it's very much like that too.
- 27:31So in addition to these tales of sightings, the legend of black shuck has also inspired numerous works of art and literature.
- 27:37Over the years, the creature has appeared in everything from local folk songs and modern horror movies.
- 27:42In recent years, there's been run out interest, like re, sorry, renowned renewed interest in the legends with various groups organizing black shuck themed events and tours in the area.
- 27:52That's hilarious.
- 27:53So they're kind of like embracing it now.
- 27:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:56So in conclusion, the black shuck is the well-known legend in the British folklore and has been passed down from centuries to centuries and.
- 28:05whether or not it's, I mean, obviously some people are gonna embrace it, others are still gonna be terrified of it, but we'll see.
- 28:11But they're still ran.
- 28:13There's not as many sightings as what's as what their once was.
- 28:18Yeah.
- 28:18So again, they were saying like, that was more backing to the basis of the whole Vikings brought over huge dogs.
- 28:26Yeah.
- 28:26That they've died out, so because they're like, yeah, we're just not seeing'em all that much anymore.
- 28:30So, or I was just looking up, you know, I mean this is, this in particular animal, this is classic like deep subconscious human fear.
- 28:41Oh, it is a predator in the night.
- 28:43Yeah.
- 28:43Something creepy.
- 28:44Yeah.
- 28:45And although wolves, so the last wolf in England was killed in the 14th century.
- 28:52So that was a long time ago, and that's a freaking island.
- 28:55Hundreds.
- 28:55But you're also on an island like a, it's a large island, but still You're on an island.
- 28:59Yeah.
- 28:59They kill a, they killed the last wolf there, but where they killed the last wolf was in the county, south of Suffolk.
- 29:05Okay.
- 29:05Okay.
- 29:06So the last place in England, they saw wolves, was that side that, okay.
- 29:09That kind of area.
- 29:10Yeah.
- 29:11So if like this could also have been local people's telling your kids like, don't go out at night.
- 29:18Yes.
- 29:18Because literally there's a wolf out there and we'll eat you.
- 29:21That has transformed into this dog.
- 29:24Or people saw remnants of the last of the wolves.
- 29:27Yep.
- 29:28And then no.
- 29:28Very well, yeah.
- 29:31Crazy.
- 29:31But yeah, that was one I'd never heard of before.
- 29:34Yeah.
- 29:34I'd never, I don't think I knew that's the name.
- 29:36Yep.
- 29:36I heard black like that the legend kind of thing, but not the name.
- 29:40Well, now you know, The more you know.
- 29:43Right.
- 29:43Well, something I've heard a lot about but still had a lot of interest.
- 29:46I, so I've never do Dove super into the legend, so this was a fun exercise.
- 29:52I just knew a lot about it, general stuff.
- 29:55And it's the moth man.
- 29:56This is a good one.
- 29:57Yeah, this is a good one.
- 29:59This is one that is close enough to where I grew up that it, yeah.
- 30:04Once you, once you were old enough to hear about this, you're like never going there, ever.
- 30:08Right.
- 30:09Because it's like I, again, this is, and I know we, there are lots of layers to this too.
- 30:13There, there, there are so many freaking layers.
- 30:15Again, this is the same, I hold the principle with this one as I do with ghosts and like boards and everything like that.
- 30:23Whether or not I believe in it or not, don't care.
- 30:26She's side of caution.
- 30:27I am not messing with it.
- 30:29Like, just no.
- 30:31Like whenever people like, you know, teenager growing up, that's not feel about Ouija boards.
- 30:37Yeah.
- 30:38Why?
- 30:38I'm not, I'm not sure I believe in them or not.
- 30:41I'm just not.
- 30:41I'm just not.
- 30:42I definitely will never just please.
- 30:43No, no.
- 30:44And this is the same thing with going to this town and ev like No, no.
- 30:49I'm fine.
- 30:50Well let's dive in.
- 30:52Okay.
- 30:52So this is actually a relatively recent crypted.
- 30:56It is as far as Cryptids go because this all started in the 1960s, so point Pleasant West Virginia, um, in between PA and Ohio.
- 31:09The, these sightings started to happen.
- 31:11So first let me describe what people were seeing and then we'll talk about the sightings themself.
- 31:15So, moth man is described as a six to seven foot tall creature, humanoid in shape, giant, bright red eyes, a 10 foot wing span and basically described as like a man but with wings.
- 31:30Yep.
- 31:31Which is really creepy.
- 31:32Mm-hmm.
- 31:32uh, really creepy because the mo moth man makes you think a giant moth.
- 31:38No, kind of, but like this is just a dude with wings.
- 31:41Yes.
- 31:41Which is really creepy.
- 31:43And it's also described as being a clumsy runner, but a good flyer I mean, to be fair, if it was real, to do both.
- 31:50Yeah.
- 31:51But to be fair, if it has adapted to flying, it doesn't really need to run well.
- 31:55Right.
- 31:55But I guess makes it then more adapted to aerial life then.
- 31:58So, so yes.
- 31:59Human annoyed but not human cuz humans are good runners.
- 32:02So on November 12th of 1966, I'm already getting like Heebies but continue I'm just gonna, well cuz there's just too much information too.
- 32:11I had to dig.
- 32:12There's a lot.
- 32:12There's so much on the moth man.
- 32:14So grave diggers.
- 32:17also, like I love that this is starting off with grave Digg grave diggers.
- 32:20Yeah.
- 32:20Grave diggers looked up to see a brown human being soaring from tree to tree above them.
- 32:26F No.
- 32:27Which again, I would die of a heart attack if I saw Yes, you're a grave digger.
- 32:31First of all, you're already like, you're already like freaked out senses are on high alert and then, yeah, and then you see some giant humanoid creature soaring from tree to tree.
- 32:40I would, Nope.
- 32:41I would put down my shovel and I would just calmly walk away and be like, this is my re resignation.
- 32:48I'm done.
- 32:49Three days later, this is the big one.
- 32:51This is where it all started in the news because those guys didn't report anything.
- 32:55Mm-hmm.
- 32:55I guess until later.
- 32:56Yeah.
- 32:57So on November 15th, 1966, four people were driving on Route 62 near the National Guard Armory Building and a Power and the Power.
- 33:06This area I dug much more into it.
- 33:09It's called the t n T area.
- 33:11So back in World War ii, this area was in munitions like depot, like they made mm-hmm.
- 33:17munitions for World War ii.
- 33:18So they made T N T and they made some other things there.
- 33:21And so there's all these underground bunkers that are kind of being reclaimed by nature and like the whole place is being reclaimed by nature.
- 33:29But that there is talk that either there are still things stored there, or at the very least, that a lot of these materials are toxic and seeping back into the land.
- 33:40So it's already like a creepy place.
- 33:41Yeah.
- 33:42You know?
- 33:43Yeah.
- 33:43Old World War ii munitions, bunkers.
- 33:45Yeah.
- 33:46Right.
- 33:46So that's where they're driving by.
- 33:49Linda Scarber, one of the women who was in the car described seeing a slender muscular man about seven feet tall with white wings, which that the whole colors are always changing with moth.
- 34:03Yes.
- 34:03Yeah.
- 34:03But tall with white wings.
- 34:05And then said she was unable to dis discern its face due to the hypnotic effect of its eyes distressed.
- 34:11The witnesses drove away at speed and said that the creature flew after their car making a screeching sound.
- 34:16It pursued them as far as point, pleasant city limits.
- 34:19And it, they were going a hundred miles per hour because they were terrified.
- 34:22Yeah.
- 34:23And they said it was keeping up with them.
- 34:24So they were saying it was flying like a hundred miles per hour.
- 34:28They were eight more sightings over the next several days.
- 34:30Two were volunteer firefighters who saw a bird with large red eye, like a giant bird with large red eyes.
- 34:36Another guy in a nearby town saw weird patterns on his TV and heard noises outside.
- 34:42When he went out with a flashlight, he saw two large red eyes.
- 34:45That resembled bicycle reflectors and his German shepherd ran into the woods after them.
- 34:50And his dog was never seen it.
- 34:51He never found his dog again.
- 34:53He just found Paul Prince going around in his circles and then gone then nothing.
- 34:57Nope.
- 34:57No prints leading away or there just gone dog.
- 35:00Mm-hmm.
- 35:01Nope.
- 35:02Um, that's also when I would move.
- 35:04Yeah.
- 35:04Nope.
- 35:06Nope.
- 35:06That, that, uh, then it's, it's, you're, you're on the border of West Virginia and Ohio.
- 35:12There's about a hundred thousand other places.
- 35:14I would rather move me.
- 35:15No.
- 35:16Move to, I'd be okay leaving.
- 35:18So then, and then just more and more sightings.
- 35:21So there was like this frenzy of sightings in 1966.
- 35:26Then in 1967, so almost, it's actually a year.
- 35:33To the day.
- 35:34Yep.
- 35:34Okay.
- 35:35That these first people, not the grave diggers, but the newspaper people saw November 15th, on December 15th, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed in Point Pleasant.
- 35:47This bridge was built back in 1928 for much lighter cars.
- 35:51The cars at the time were about 1500 pounds.
- 35:53And then the average weight of a car in the sixties was five or 4,000 pounds.
- 35:58So like weighing times as heavy as what that bridge was built for.
- 36:02And traffic was really heavy on the bridge that day.
- 36:05And because that bridge was built for lighter cars, they had built no redundancy into that bridge.
- 36:11And redundancy is like a fail safe.
- 36:14Yeah.
- 36:14So let's say now when you build bridges, if one part cracks, the entire bridge doesn't collapse because they've built in extra stops.
- 36:22But at the time, they didn't do that.
- 36:24So one piece snapped on the Ohio side of the bridge and the entire bridge fell apart within moments.
- 36:30Plunging all of the cars and people into the Ice Cold River.
- 36:33Mm-hmm.
- 36:33Yeah.
- 36:3446 people were drowned or were crushed by the bridge.
- 36:37Oh, so many.
- 36:38Yeah.
- 36:39So many 46 people.
- 36:40It's just, yeah, it's just sad.
- 36:42And so, also one of my biggest fears.
- 36:45Yeah.
- 36:45Oh my gosh.
- 36:46In a car for sure.
- 36:47I actually have, I have, I've had nightmares about that.
- 36:50Well, I have one of those car window breaker thingies that are like in my car's, like door that I actually have Velcro to like the inside of the door.
- 36:57You know what I mean?
- 36:58That like, it, it's like a little hammer.
- 37:00It's a, yeah.
- 37:00It's like a, yeah.
- 37:01Because yeah, that's definitely a huge fear of mine.
- 37:03Mm-hmm.
- 37:04um, some people believe, so some.
- 37:08Now, where does this connect with Moth Man?
- 37:11Some people believe that the Moth man was either responsible for this or was the harbinger of Doom very much like the black shuck?
- 37:18Because wasn't he spotted near, near the Yeah, I mean, depending on who you say.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:25Who says.
- 37:27it's just, so a lot of people were like, listen, this happened a year to the day and all of a sudden sightings, most sightings of Moth man stopped after that day.
- 37:38Yeah.
- 37:38So it was like, that was like the, the final capsule.
- 37:41And then he was gone because cuz I read, I read a lot of reports that said that like they saw him like nearby then after that big mass death gone.
- 37:52Yeah.
- 37:52Just like nothing.
- 37:53And so in 1975, a non-fiction in air quotes, because I think this very much depends on who you ask.
- 38:00Yeah.
- 38:01the non-fiction book, moth Man Prophecies came out and so the author of that connected the dots between Moth Man and what happened on that bridge.
- 38:09Yep.
- 38:09Then he also talked about how there's lots of other weird things about what could have been going on that people in the area were having, um, like, uh, pre-cognition, like they were.
- 38:24people were seeing what was gonna happen ahead of time, all this stuff.
- 38:28In 1999 there were actually sightings in Moscow of a similar creature, and later that year there were apartment building bombings.
- 38:37Hmm.
- 38:37Um, so those people connected the dots there saying again, look what's happened.
- 38:41This thing shows up and then a bunch of people die.
- 38:43And then in 2016, in Point Pleasant, a man saw a large creature jumping from tree to tree and he snapped pictures.
- 38:50And you guys can see the pictures online.
- 38:51Yep.
- 38:51They are pretty freaky.
- 38:52Yeah.
- 38:52But most people think it's just an owl carrying a snake, but he's like, no freaking way.
- 38:57That's not what I saw.
- 38:58And then in 2019 there was actually like, so, so during there was hundreds of reports made.
- 39:04Yeah.
- 39:04During that year in Point, pleasant, there was like 50 something people in total who said that they saw him in Chicago in 2019.
- 39:10So he's still around, possibly just in different places.
- 39:14Is it the same creature?
- 39:16Is it different creatures?
- 39:17Are there more of them?
- 39:18And if you want to know more, there is a Moth Man museum with all the police reports and witness accounts located in Point Pleasant.
- 39:24And they have a Moth Man festival every year.
- 39:27It's very much a culture and part of the town, and it's great for them, for tourism and things like that.
- 39:32And it really hit the national stage in 2002 when they made a, a film out of it, which is what I saw as a kid.
- 39:39I was Yeah, mock man prophecies.
- 39:41Yeah.
- 39:4112.
- 39:42And I was like, this is it.
- 39:43It was with Richard Gear and it was terrifying.
- 39:46Yeah, it is creepy, even though you only see the Monster wants.
- 39:50Yep.
- 39:50It's more about the It's the idea of it mind.
- 39:53Yeah.
- 39:53Yeah.
- 39:54It's like a whole mind blow thing.
- 39:56So what's actually going on?
- 39:58Okay, I'm gonna start.
- 40:01do you want me to start?
- 40:01Most likely or least likely?
- 40:03Oh, go ahead.
- 40:03I don't, uh, do least likely first.
- 40:05Okay.
- 40:05Least likely.
- 40:06Okay.
- 40:07Um, military experiment.
- 40:10If it was in the area of this munitions factory, what else was it?
- 40:15Yeah.
- 40:15Was it really am you know, an ammunitions factory or not?
- 40:19So military experiment gone wrong.
- 40:21Of course we're going aliens.
- 40:23Okay.
- 40:23Because the guy in the moth man prophecies ties this to, you know, that guy up with saw weird patterns on his TV happening.
- 40:31There were visits from men in black at the time to this town.
- 40:35Of course there were these, these sightings, So like was it, was it because they knew it was something?
- 40:40Was it not?
- 40:41Because I knew was something it would explain all the precognition that people had.
- 40:45It would explain the weird, like it would explain a lot.
- 40:49Yeah.
- 40:49If it's an alien um, let's just take it as an alien cuz that'll help.
- 40:55Yeah.
- 40:55A Bard owl.
- 40:56Some people are like, it's just an owl.
- 40:58Because that would explain the red eyes, like the cuz of the eye shine.
- 41:02True.
- 41:02I don't know, man.
- 41:03That's a big stretch.
- 41:04Yeah.
- 41:04You'd have to be really wasted to think a bar out, a bared owl, A 10 foot wings band.
- 41:08Yeah.
- 41:09Um, and I know pe people exaggerate, but that's a, that's a bit much, that's a big one.
- 41:14Also, most people in the area are probably familiar with barred owls.
- 41:17Yeah.
- 41:18Or, or at least just owls in general, you know.
- 41:21Yeah.
- 41:22It very much resembles what they consider a demonn archetype that people see during sleep paralysis.
- 41:30A lot of people describe a very similar creature that they see Yeah.
- 41:33During sleep paralysis, which means that that image is somewhere in the human subconscious.
- 41:39Well, I think again though, I think that that.
- 41:42it's a fear of the unknown.
- 41:44Mm-hmm.
- 41:44something that is humanlike enough because we know humans, like nothing is scarier than a human because we're evil.
- 41:50Like yeah.
- 41:51We can be evil.
- 41:52And so these are bad things.
- 41:53Yes.
- 41:53And we know it.
- 41:54Yeah.
- 41:54And nocturnal night time.
- 41:56Yes.
- 41:56Yeah.
- 41:56Always scary.
- 41:57Yes.
- 41:58Red eyes like all of that.
- 41:59And so is this just an unconscious fear that people, so when people panic, is this just an image that they're projecting when they're seeing a animals random animal encounters that this is, yeah, this is what I'm seeing.
- 42:15There was definitely a guy at the time, whether or not it was the first time.
- 42:22There was a report of a local man that hid in a Halloween costume and he was hiding in those bunkers.
- 42:30Do you want to die?
- 42:32Like right.
- 42:33Um, cause Okay, for pause, pause, pause.
- 42:36It is West Virginia.
- 42:37I'm sorry.
- 42:38I know I live in Texas.
- 42:39Exact same thing, but I, again, having grown up on the border.
- 42:43Yes.
- 42:43God, are you kidding?
- 42:44Because that's definitely what, like when this was going down, people were arming themselves with guns.
- 42:49They, yeah, I would too.
- 42:50Yeah.
- 42:52So, yeah, that guy was hiding in the bunkers, and so maybe that was the first sighting and then people panicked and saw it everywhere.
- 43:00Yeah.
- 43:01Who knows?
- 43:02But okay.
- 43:03The, I think in my opinion, most plausible if we're going not supernatural or anything at all.
- 43:09Mm-hmm.
- 43:09because dude, like it definitely, yeah.
- 43:11Like even if it was like the angel of death.
- 43:14Mm-hmm.
- 43:14you know, like whatever.
- 43:16But actually explainable Sandhill Crane, which I've never heard this, but I'm like, oh, okay, so a WVU professor of biology thinks that it could have been a sandhill crane.
- 43:28These birds are about as to, first of all, this poor Sandhill crane, you know what I mean?
- 43:32Like before the bridge have, and he has no idea error.
- 43:37He just, but, and he's just like on.
- 43:39A little lost, just like mossy in his way.
- 43:42And he's just like, lands on this bridge because he is like, this is a safe place.
- 43:46Next thing you know, the whole thing collapses.
- 43:48He kills 46 people and he's like, oh my goodness.
- 43:50It was the bird that broke the bridge.
- 43:54And he's just like mine in his own business.
- 43:57He's just like, trying to figure out how to get back and just causing chaos.
- 44:01Wasn't, I wasn't even thinking it was the bridge.
- 44:03I was mostly thinking that first encounter where they're like, we heard a loud screeching, like he was just freaking out because they're like, ha and he's like, ha ha, So santel cranes are about as tall as a person, so they are huge.
- 44:16They're seven to eight, but they are tall.
- 44:18Yeah.
- 44:19Um, well, and as tall as a person.
- 44:20Okay.
- 44:21So if it's a tall person, easily six foot.
- 44:24Add fear on top of that you can easily get to, to seven.
- 44:28Yeah.
- 44:28And a night.
- 44:29Easily get to seven, eight feet tall.
- 44:31No problem.
- 44:32They have a seven foot wingspan, which is substantial.
- 44:35Yeah.
- 44:35I can see again, people exaggerating.
- 44:37Seven to 10.
- 44:38Yeah.
- 44:38Easily, easily.
- 44:39It has bright red color all around its eyes.
- 44:44Okay.
- 44:44Yeah.
- 44:44So it's eyeballs themselves, but their eyeballs are very tiny.
- 44:48Yeah.
- 44:48It's really the red you would see all around their eyes.
- 44:52They do migrate through neighboring Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
- 44:55Mm-hmm.
- 44:56so they're right next door.
- 44:57Yeah.
- 44:57It wouldn't, it wouldn't take much for a strong storm to just kind of blow'em off course.
- 45:02Yeah.
- 45:03They, okay.
- 45:04Where it say it's like, I don't know where they're getting this a hundred mile an hour from, but because a Sandhill crane flies 25 to 35 miles per hour.
- 45:12which is fast, but no hundred miles.
- 45:14Yeah.
- 45:16Some people though are like, well, maybe it was deformed, you know, if it was weirdly blown off course and living in the area or was born in the area, it's just lost were and that there was toxic chemicals in the environment.
- 45:31Maybe it did something to it, Oh.
- 45:33Um, and even if it didn't, it's a bird that is not normally from the area.
- 45:38And so most people would have no idea clue what they were looking at.
- 45:40Yeah.
- 45:41Which, I mean, to be fair at night, yeah.
- 45:43Most people have and like, yeah, most people have no idea.
- 45:46You know, they see a red toe hawk and how many times do we hear, uh, I saw it all.
- 45:49A bald eagle.
- 45:50No, you didn't.
- 45:50You saw a red toe hawk.
- 45:51Oh no.
- 45:52It was a bald eagle.
- 45:52You a person size bird.
- 45:54And then, you know, and you've never seen it before.
- 45:56Before it does slender red.
- 45:59Tall, big wing span, Most people describe him as bird looking.
- 46:05I just like to go with the theory that yes, it was a Sandhill crane that was just blown off course a little bit and he's just trying to live and just all this chaos is just following, you know what, that would actually make a screams every time they see him.
- 46:18That would actually make a really cute, like kid's Halloween book.
- 46:22I'm just saying just like this poor, like Sammy the Sandhill crane.
- 46:27Yeah, just moth man.
- 46:29Yeah.
- 46:29Just like this, this poor bird that's just trying to live and survive and just, yeah, just, just a black cat as you would, you know, just, uh, poor bird.
- 46:40So I'm willing to believe that that's what it was in the sixties.
- 46:42That makes sense.
- 46:43I don't know what it's been everywhere else.
- 46:45If it, you know, I'm, well, I mean the lo other locations that you said, you know, the, where it's been spotted that also, you know, not Chicago for sure, especially like that's in their range.
- 46:55Mo had no idea.
- 46:56Yeah.
- 46:57But Really lost.
- 46:58Yeah.
- 46:58I don't know about the whole aliens thing or like the pre-cognition or anything like that.
- 47:03It's too creepy for me.
- 47:04I wouldn't mind visiting Point Pleasant and going to the festival.
- 47:07I think that'd be a blast because to me it's not the town.
- 47:10It's seeing that it's like seeing the sh the thing if I just saw Moth man, I would, but yeah.
- 47:16So that's Malman.
- 47:18If you wanna know more about it, there is tons out there you can read.
- 47:21There's so much read book.
- 47:22Malman Prophecies.
- 47:23That's what I was just thinking.
- 47:24I was like, I've never read, I've never actually read the book, but now I kind of want me Me too.
- 47:27Yeah.
- 47:28Although I probably will have nightmares.
- 47:29Oh, I like he is connecting those dots that it is Yeah.
- 47:33To of just feeding in your paranoia anyway.
- 47:36Yeah.
- 47:36You're like, yeah, this is plausible.
- 47:38Yeah.
- 47:39I'm gonna die.
- 47:40Especially now that the government said there are aliens.
- 47:42Yeah.
- 47:43Right.
- 47:44like I knew it.
- 47:46Oh goodness.
- 47:47All right.
- 47:47Well, I'm not gonna say it tonight.
- 47:49I also like that.
- 47:50your first thought.
- 47:52Okay.
- 47:53Also, Katie, just like as Christians, that if a person saw a slender humanoid person with large white wings, your first thing is absolute terror.
- 48:04Not like, that would be my reaction to if I ever saw what like actually describes an angel.
- 48:11No.
- 48:12Right.
- 48:12No.
- 48:13No.
- 48:13Yeah.
- 48:14Forget Mary in the Bible.
- 48:15I would've been crapping my pants as seconds some showed up.
- 48:19That's what that was.
- 48:20That is not describing it like, dude, that again, another idea for a book, the real story of the Bible.
- 48:26Like how would people actually react to these situations and that would be one of'em.
- 48:31Like an angel pierce craps of pants runs away.
- 48:34Just sheer terror.
- 48:35I was freaking out.
- 48:37They'd have to calm me down enough to be able to tell me what they want.
- 48:39Yeah, but slap across the face.
- 48:42Calm down, calm down.
- 48:46Uh, yeah, I just liked it.
- 48:48Yeah.
- 48:48That this is like, everyone was like, ah, a slender human with large white wings.
- 48:54Let's get the heck outta here.
- 48:55Yeah.
- 48:56run, run for dear life.
- 48:57Meanwhile, it's again, okay, let's just, okay.
- 49:00Not a Sandhill crane.
- 49:01It is an angel.
- 49:02Just trying to warn these people, you know, let's fallen angel who's come to Earth, who for a whole year, for a whole year, he's like trying to warn people of all these bad things that are happening.
- 49:12Structure is bad.
- 49:13Yeah.
- 49:13And he's like, he's standing there telling people like, don't, don't go.
- 49:17And meanwhile, you know, they're all coming out and it just collapses.
- 49:20They see'em there.
- 49:21So then they just distribute him being the bad luck symbol and he's, you know, just trying to warn people like but everyone just, that nobody listened to.
- 49:31Right.
- 49:31That everyone's just freaking out about, oh yeah.
- 49:35That would be funny.
- 49:35We love us.
- 49:36I, I love us, Virginia.
- 49:38So I, Oh, the country's gorgeous.
- 49:40Yeah, for sure.
- 49:41I mean, there's.
- 49:42Very few place.
- 49:44I mean, I grew up, you know, going well in college and then post-college and stuff, hiking and everything through there.
- 49:49And it is gorgeous country to go hiking.
- 49:52Yeah, I was gonna live in Maryland or Pennsylvania.
- 49:55It'd definitely be West Virginia.
- 49:56Dude, there's nothing there.
- 49:58Yeah, there's like not me for career.
- 50:00Well, like, I mean if I wanted to work in Lake Parks or Oh yeah, for sure.
- 50:03Yeah well that's it.
- 50:05What's your last one?
- 50:06The Jersey Devil.
- 50:08Okay, cool, cool, cool.
- 50:09Yeah.
- 50:09I don't know anything about this, but I've heard the name many times.
- 50:12Me, me too hockey team and had no idea that this, like, that this was a, that this was a thing.
- 50:19That, this is where all of that kind of came from because you, you hear about, oh, the Jersey devil hadn't had no clue.
- 50:25All right.
- 50:25So the Jersey Devil is one of the most famous and enduring legends in an American folklore.
- 50:30The legend dates back to the early 18th century when the leads l e e e d s, family of Southern New Jersey was rumor to have given birth to a monstrous child that had wings in the head of a horse.
- 50:43Oh, wait.
- 50:44Whoa, whoa.
- 50:44I was already, sorry.
- 50:45I was starting to freak out the wings.
- 50:47The head of a what horse?
- 50:48You heard me right?
- 50:50A horse, yeah.
- 50:51A horse's head in wings.
- 50:53Uhhuh, If you look up the picture of this thing it's like almost Greek mythology looking like a minar kind of thing.
- 51:01Kind of, yeah.
- 51:02Jersey Devil.
- 51:04You keep going.
- 51:05Also, Hmm.
- 51:06Many things.
- 51:07Keep going.
- 51:07Keep going.
- 51:08Okay.
- 51:09Yeah.
- 51:09Just the Jersey Devil, not the New Jersey devil.
- 51:12Okey dokey.
- 51:13The mother was said to have cursed the child, which then transformed into the Jersey Devil and disappeared into the wilderness.
- 51:20While the exact origins of the legend are unclear, like in reality, not factual, which is stories of people it has been suggested that it may have been inspired by local folklore and superstitions, as well as by accounts of other mythical creatures from around the world.
- 51:35Yeah, because this just looks like the image, a Greek Satan, well, Satan, but also like, I don't know.
- 51:42To me it's like a, it looks more like Greek mythology than, than some.
- 51:46Yeah.
- 51:46Because a lot of, a lot of the mythology that we have here are a lot of the Cryptids and things with us from Europe.
- 51:52Yeah, yeah.
- 51:52We brought from Europe, but a lot of the ones that we have here in the US aren't this like, it's not the combined creature nest.
- 52:00No.
- 52:00As much as what this is, like, this is kind of No, this is just, it.
- 52:04Literally Greek mythology.
- 52:06Yeah.
- 52:06It's very much like the goat headed Satan picture.
- 52:09Yes.
- 52:10But instead of a goat, it's a horse head.
- 52:11Yeah.
- 52:12So the location of the legend is primary in the Pines Barron of Southern New Jersey.
- 52:17The area is called Pine Barrons, which covers over 1 million acres of dense forest, swamp and sandy beaches.
- 52:24The area has long been the center of folklore and superstition with Tale of Ghost, which is other supernatural creatures dating back centuries again.
- 52:32Creepy, dense, swamp woods, dark forest people have always been scared of dark and deep forests.
- 52:38Yep.
- 52:38Cuz it's just, it's that unknown fear.
- 52:40So the legend of the Jersey Devil is one of the most famous of these tales that have come out of this area and has been passed down through generations of local residents and visitors to the area.
- 52:49Over the years, there have been numerous firsthand accounts of seeing the Jersey Devil.
- 52:53One of the most famous sightings occurred in 1909 when multiple people reported seeing the creature flying over the town of Woodbury, New Jersey.
- 53:03I would die again.
- 53:04Yeah, yeah.
- 53:06other sightings describe the creature as a bipedal creature with wings, hooves, and a long pointed tail.
- 53:13Many of these sightings occurred in the early morning hours or during periods of low light, which has led to some to suggest that the sightings may be the result of misidentification of common animals or exaggerations of natural phenomenon.
- 53:26I'm trying to think of what common animal makes that combination.
- 53:29I mean, it's a horse, but the wings part that maybe, I'm trying to think of besides an owl, right?
- 53:37Like what else could it be carrying?
- 53:39What else could it be?
- 53:41Yeah, I don't know.
- 53:43I don't know.
- 53:44Despite numerous sightings and reports over the years, there is no concrete evidence that the Jersey Devil exists.
- 53:49Skeptics argue that the sightings are simply the result of hoaxes, misidentification, and I ex more exaggerations such as large birds or owls that people are just like, just see it and freak out because it's so creepy.
- 54:03However, there are those who believe the legendary, the Jersey Devil has some basis in reality.
- 54:09Some historians have suggested that the legends may have been inspired by the presence of Wildcats or other large predators in area.
- 54:17So it kind of, not so much like the horse part, but again, it like started there and then let's say.
- 54:24like they said something about, oh, I saw this really creepy creature in the forest, and it could be a large predator.
- 54:31And then they talk to somebody else about it and they're like, oh my God, I saw something too in that forest and it was flying.
- 54:37Next thing you know, we have a flying creature in our hands because they just start, you know, tele.
- 54:44It's the game of telephone, you know, the real life game of telephone situation here.
- 54:48So in addition to tales of sightings, the le legend of the Jersey Devil has also inspired numerous works of art and literature.
- 54:55Over the years, the creature has appeared in everything from local folk songs, horror movies, and recent years.
- 55:01There has been renewed interest in legend with, again, people are just like celebrating the Jersey Devil and we have the hockey team.
- 55:09And so the state has kind of like embraced the legend instead of.
- 55:14I mean, it's one of those things, again, I don't know, I don't know if it's just humans' nature to Yeah.
- 55:19That it's become monetize.
- 55:20Yeah.
- 55:21Then like scary, but also like, hey, let's monetize this thing.
- 55:23Well, I was also reading a thing about how in the last 20 years we've had a crypted renaissance they've called it because Renaissance, because these K cryp, but also all these K crypts are like finally it's my time to shine.
- 55:37Yeah.
- 55:37But that this seems to be a thing that happens in history when there are really bad times and people are looking for something more out there, like freaking aliens.
- 55:47But nobody is focusing on the aliens man that we are absolutely ready for the Jersey devil to be our problem and not like the failing of the economy.
- 55:56You know what I mean?
- 55:57Like all these thanks and everything on Jersey Devil, we want big.
- 56:01Those are problems we can deal with.
- 56:03Yeah.
- 56:04Right.
- 56:05Fun.
- 56:05Maybe you can be our friend.
- 56:07Who knows?
- 56:07Yeah.
- 56:08Just holding out hope of this problem.
- 56:11Yeah.
- 56:11I really wonder what the, I feel like you could figure this out.
- 56:15Has anybody asked the leads family?
- 56:17There's gotta be the leads, family still around like, Hey, a long time ago, anybody in your family get born?
- 56:22Really weird.
- 56:24Yeah.
- 56:24Yeah.
- 56:25Maybe not shit with wings and a horse head, but like, can we just genetically test you real quick?
- 56:31Just, uh, give us some of your blood.
- 56:32You guys got some weird stuff going on.
- 56:33There's no rumors of like, A cousin that got born with like freaky shoulder blades or Right.
- 56:41So, just if I thought my neighbor had given birth, okay, this is when, this is the 17 hundreds.
- 56:47If I thought my neighbor gave birth to a creature with wings and a horse's head.
- 56:52Yeah, it was, it was, that lady has made a pact with the devil, right?
- 56:55Yeah.
- 56:56It was 1735.
- 56:58Yeah, so, so more so let, I just hurried up and pulled up some stuff like the, where I got this all from.
- 57:04So it was her 13th child, which also adds on a layer.
- 57:07Yeah, yeah, of course.
- 57:09And thing Yeah.
- 57:09How old you, I mean, Legitimately, she might have had a genetic, a genetic 13th kid.
- 57:16Yeah.
- 57:16So her name for sure was, yeah, after freaking 13 kids.
- 57:20One's about, that's how old she was by then.
- 57:22Yeah.
- 57:23But also one's about, you know, She never, just the probability of things like I, who knows, so her name was Jane Leeds.
- 57:31They caught her, so, right.
- 57:32How do we not know?
- 57:33How does somebody, not somebody is related to this woman.
- 57:35I mean, yeah, but House was who?
- 57:38Family.
- 57:38True.
- 57:39Oh, I'm sure.
- 57:40But I'm sure it's just the same thing as what's, you know, what's already out there.
- 57:42Oh no, actually my great great, great, great.
- 57:44Grandma did give birth to the Jersey devil, or no, no, no, no.
- 57:48She actually gave birth to like, so I don't even know.
- 57:52It's like she deformed.
- 57:53So she had 12 kids, and then whenever she was pregnant with this 13th child in utero, she'd cursed it because she was just like, why?
- 58:01She was just bitter about, yeah.
- 58:03She was just to be fair, if I had 12 kids, In 1735, I'd be to blame the poor kid I know.
- 58:10With your husband, right?
- 58:11Keep it in your pants.
- 58:13Yeah, I would be poor kid.
- 58:15And also, why would you wish that on yourself?
- 58:17Do you know what it would be like to give birth to something with a horse's head?
- 58:20Well, and wings.
- 58:21So it says that she was in labor on a stormy night, also another layer and her friend, great story.
- 58:26And her friends were all around her.
- 58:29It was at first born as a normal child.
- 58:32Um Oh, okay.
- 58:33So it was at at first, but then it's good changed chuck that thing right in the fire.
- 58:38Yeah.
- 58:38Right.
- 58:39It's, it changed into a creature with hooves, a goat's head.
- 58:42So some say goats, some say horse bat wings and a forked tail or a long pointy tail she had, yeah, she was doing it with Satan growling.
- 58:51If I was the neighbor, I would've.
- 58:53It was growling and screaming.
- 58:55The child beat everyone with its tail before flying up the chimney and heading into the Pines in some versions of the tail.
- 59:03Mother Leads was supposedly a witch.
- 59:05They all thought she was a witch anyway.
- 59:07Well, right.
- 59:08And the ch and they thought that the child's father was in fact the devil himself, Satan, which again absolutely to give birth to.
- 59:15If, let's just say if it was some deformity and that they didn't know about, they'd be like, N nope, nope.
- 59:19Can't do it.
- 59:20Yep.
- 59:21She's been spending too much time in the woods naked lately.
- 59:23Right.
- 59:24Like it's So some people also refer to it as the leads devil or the Devil of leads.
- 59:33Wow.
- 59:33Also, can you imagine that being your family legacy?
- 59:36Pretty cool though.
- 59:37So some people, so some, there's some discrepancy on the name, which.
- 59:42like their ancestry.
- 59:44Then figuring out hard, so some say it was Jane leads, other people say it was Deborah Leeds on grounds that Deborah LE's husband, Jiff Jaffe leads named 12 children in the Will.
- 59:56He wrote during 1936, which is compatible with the legend, Deborah and Jaffe leads also lived in the leads point section, which is now Atlantic County New Jersey, which is thought to be the area where this all started.
- 1:00:11Wait, but you did you just saying 1936, he left it in the will.
- 1:00:14Sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 1:00:151736 now.
- 1:00:16Oh, okay.
- 1:00:161730.
- 1:00:17Yeah, that tracks.
- 1:00:19Yeah.
- 1:00:19And so there's, there have been, yeah, the 13th kid flew away.
- 1:00:23Even he gave birth and he's like, there's 12 other kids.
- 1:00:25I'm out.
- 1:00:26Like, he didn't wanna do it.
- 1:00:27He's just like, I don't wanna share with all those kids.
- 1:00:31So interesting enough.
- 1:00:32So there are like some other things that connected to this leads family that kind of gave it some prominence over, I would say other like lo like local folklore or just folklore in general is that there were like some involvement with New Jersey politicians, one being none other than Benjamin Franklin and Franklin's.
- 1:00:52Yep.
- 1:00:52And Franklin's rival Almanac publisher Daniel Leed resulted in a leads family being described as quote unquote monsters and it was Daniel Leed's negative description as the leads devil rather than actual creature that created the legend of the New Jersey Devil.
- 1:01:10So there's also like his own family, he did it to his own family.
- 1:01:14You're saying like that guy leads the leads guy it, well they're saying that Benjamin Franklin didn't like this Daniel leads guy, and this was around, this leads guy died in 1720.
- 1:01:27So because he didn't like.
- 1:01:28this guy, his family or anything, Benjamin Franklin, prominent politician, started calling the whole family monsters.
- 1:01:36And again, then that kind of maybe it piggyback off of damn, you know what I mean?
- 1:01:41He so dirty.
- 1:01:42Ben Franklin.
- 1:01:42Right.
- 1:01:43Geez.
- 1:01:44Ben Franklin, geez.
- 1:01:45So anyway, so there's tons of different like shoot offs of the story shoot offs of origin story.
- 1:01:53It's, yeah, there'll never be an answer for this one.
- 1:01:55No.
- 1:01:56But it is all kinds of, just craziness about Benjamin Franklin, how he ties into this whole thing.
- 1:02:04So anyway, yeah, there's a lot of interesting stories out there and this one isn't as layered as the Moth Man, but it definitely has, I don't know, just like a wild multilayers of origin where it could have come from.
- 1:02:19and then again, do, there was other sightings that was in the early 17 hundreds.
- 1:02:25There was another wave of sightings in 1909, like I said, in January.
- 1:02:30Again, it was New Jersey, south New, or blah, New Jersey, Philadelphia area where they saw a bunch of these, a bunch of new sightings.
- 1:02:39And so that, kind of like kicked all the legends up again.
- 1:02:42So, yeah, so if you really wanna kind of dive into one, I mean, that's sort of why I, I knew about this one.
- 1:02:51I didn't remember the name.
- 1:02:53Like I knew about it for like the, you know, New Jersey Des Devils and things like that.
- 1:02:58But there was an X files.
- 1:02:59Episode on it.
- 1:03:00That's, you know, yeah.
- 1:03:02Where I knew it from middle school, Katie Exfil extraordinaire.
- 1:03:05But again, there's so many different depictions and stories of this one.
- 1:03:08But yeah, if you guys wanna really wanna do a dive into just some crazy history, origin stories, this one's a really interesting one to Yeah.
