- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Um so without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Rochelle Jacobs.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: She is the CEO and co-founder of Naturally Serious.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: So welcome, Rochelle.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited you're here with us.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much for having me.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: Very exciting here.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm very excited to host you.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Um could you tell us a little bit about yourself, just your background and um everything you've done and your career track?
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: So I have, I guess you could say, for lack of a better way, I was born into the industry.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Um mother started several skincare lines before launching um together with me in 2003, June Jacobs line.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: And essentially she grew up with generations and generations of women who were making all of their own skincare products before they were available on all the different ways they are today, before the internet and before Sephora's and other stores.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: And she, you know, that's what she knew.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: And if you see these women, they all look like Cleopatra, they have this incredible glowing skin.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: And we really um kind of built our skincare around what she learned in her upbringing, and that's just kind of kind of how we started um in the industry, if you will.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: And I joined um in 1999 after working on Wall Street and um in a big uh corporate company in finance, and I uh saw my mother's then very tiny business, it was a clinical skincare brand brand, um, blossoming.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: And I asked her if I could join, and she didn't hesitate and said, absolutely not.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: So um it was uh 1999 when I interviewed with her business partner who asked me when I could get started, and really enjoyed kind of building sort of at the time, it was really all back end, more operations.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: I wasn't in the day-to-day of the skincare part of it because it was my passion, but it was my mother's baby.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: And as as the um once June Jacobs launched in 2003, um, I just became so much more passionate about every aspect of actually creating a product and bringing it to the ultimate consumer and really kind of kicked off from there.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: So the exciting part about that is the industry has changed.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: I would say, you know, not quite as fast as technology has changed, but not too far behind in some of the innovations that we have.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: And in 1999, the same year that I joined, she had this crazy idea to um own and operate our own manufacturing and research and development facility.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, being very green at the time, I didn't understand what she was thinking or doing.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Like, why would you want to do this when you know other people can do this that have been doing it or whatever it was?
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And she said, I want to control my innovation, I want to control every aspect of how we bring a product to market.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: So it was really an incredible way to get access to raw ingredient vendors and to push them to create things that they didn't know they wanted to make.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: So um the Gene Jacobs line is a um 100% natural wine, and we were really the first of its kind in back in the day and have continued to update and upgrade the you know the products and the formulations as the um technology evolves.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: And that led me and my co-founder Sarah McNamara to really kind of this white space that we saw um a couple of years ago in Clean Beauty, which was just elevating um the products a little bit further and sort of marrying the clinical side of business with the clean side and coming out with incredibly efficacious products that were you know good for the environment, good for your skin, and truly the real definition of clean beauty.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: And that's kind of how we got here.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Wow, I love that.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: And I love clean beauty, honestly, because I'm not gonna lie to you, I don't fully understand it, but I love it because whenever I shop, I'm always looking for things that are more naturally based.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Not I don't want a lot of chemically made compounds in my in my skincare a lot of times.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: I didn't really say this, but you just hit the nail on the head with exactly why we launched this line.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: We wanted to take the guesswork out of everybody that who didn't who knew they wanted clean, didn't know exactly what it was, but wanted like you know, we had the credibility and kind of trust us to really actually deliver what we promised.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: So you just exactly what we're looking for busy, busy women on the go who really want to do the best they can for their skin um and and don't want to overthink it, let us overthink it for you and really make it accessible to people that you know at price points that really weren't accessible in the past.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Yes, and that's so important.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: And you know, I can tell you, um, as a woman who is really done on the go all the time, um, you know, being able to put something in my bag, you know, for the hospital or you know, just have it there.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Um, you wash your face, you can put on like a moisturizer or serum, like it is it really makes our day because no one has time for that 30 minutes.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Like for like every time you do your skincare.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: So I really, really appreciate that that you guys are doing that.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm so happy because you're literally exactly what we're looking for.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Well, you hit your demographic, I'll tell you that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Um, so I know that on your website you guys have no BAD ingredients, so that's banned, ambiguous, or debatable ingredients.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Can you go a little bit more into that and tell us um all about that stuff and what you consider to be um falling into those categories?
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so the good news here is there's a list um of all banned and you know, banned ingredients and not just banned in the US, banned in other countries, because there's a lot of ingredients that are actually allowed in certain countries, but not in the US.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: So these are ingredients that are not allowed in any kind, you know, that you will not find them in any products.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Um, they're also anything that's sort of ambiguous, where it's on the gray area, which is a lot of ingredients, um, we we found a equal or better um replacement for all those ingredients.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: And anything that people still aren't sure about, where they're saying, well, this mayor may not be good for you.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Um, it's something that people are still debating if it's safe or not, we found a replacement for that.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: And again, that goes back to being able to own and operate your own research and development and really push our manufacturers to come out with ingredients, you know, our raw ingredient vendors to come out with ingredients that fill the same purpose.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And there's always a dupe, you know what I mean, in the market.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Like I think that's so cool that you brought that up because there's always an alternative, there's always a dupe, there's always another option.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: You don't have to go with the the, you know what I mean, the stuff that's really gonna harm your skin.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Right now, I know there's a lot of buzz around um like sunscreens.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: And you're talking a lot of people are talking about, you know, dermatologists are talking about how sunscreens can eventually lead to skin cancer.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: And I and I sit there and I wonder about this because the the research isn't out, yeah, right?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: The medical research.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, I think to myself, well, it's probably the ingredients that you're utilizing.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: You know, if you use something else, it's probably not gonna lead to that.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: So that's just my theory about it.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: So I you know, the quality of the ingredients in which you're getting, and we we did not stop um at any level to not get.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: We have literally the best quality ingredients you can buy out there.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: So not just prices, but we you know make sure we've tested them.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: These are exactly what they say there are, there's not fillers in them, you know, it's a hundred percent of whatever ingredient that we're putting in there, right?
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: I really commend you for that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Not a lot of brands are doing that.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: They'll say that they're clean, but then you figure out, like, you know what I mean?
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Like there's that one thing, it's like, uh, I don't really like that.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: That's exactly how we came out with this.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: You're just you're like, I feel like I prepped you for this because yeah, that's exactly what we did.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: We took some of the top quote clean brands and we took them apart.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: And that's how we decided to launch, basically, which was just coming out with what we saw as the cleanest brands out there.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: And then the other thing is in every single product, um, we have our 20-year patented um anti-pollution blend, which is white tea, green tea, um, sorry about that.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Red, white, green tea, goji berry, pomegranate, and grapeseed extracts.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: And the these six antioxidants together really help create sort of a barrier, if you will, um, like um almost like if you were um, you know, if you were back in the olden day, it's like a suit of armor that you can put on on your skin to really protect you from all the environmental toxins out there.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: So, whether it be pollution or the wind or anything that's really harming your skin, in addition to what you know the sun does, there's other environmental concerns that are really hurting our skin.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Um against that.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: And then the other part is it's also boosting whatever the active ingredients are in the in the actual product that you're using.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: So it's a full kind of protection and boosting.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: So it's like that synergistic effect is going on as well.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and we try to keep it really simple as far as the product assortment, also.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Like, what do people need most basically in their skin regimen?
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: So if you know our every one of our products in our line are really easy to use, there's no contraindications.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: You can use it with any other product, nothing bad's gonna happen if you mix it with you know your favorite cleanser or lip product.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: You can use anything um in our line with other products.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I love that because so many brands are like, well, make sure you use our cleanser and then our moisturizer, and you know what I mean?
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: It's like a very, very like it's like they have this like four-step routine, and it's like, well, what if I want to use something else?
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: We definitely have that 11-step routine, but you can you can literally substitute any product in there, and you know, we won't we won't be upset.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: We understand.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: So let me ask you something.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Um, and when you when you went into formulating your products, um, and you know, like really kind of going into that deep dive into the ingredient decks.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: Um, were there any problems you ran into with your formulation team or anything like that?
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Um, where were those some of the hurdles?
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, every single product had its own hurdle.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Um so we have a very patient and very hardworking group of chemists um, you know, dedicated to making sure that what you're saying doesn't happen.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: But uh all the iterations before we come to market um definitely had issues along the way.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: So when you have a clean beauty brand, you know, you have shelf life issues, you still have to figure out ways of um protecting the product without putting in um chemicals and other issues for stability, color, um, you know, just all the things that make up a product, it's all complicated when you're in the clean beauty world because you are limited with some of the easy fixes that you, you know, if you will, um for protecting the product.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: And you know, I think I always wonder about that because you know, there's so many people on Instagram, like chemists and you and whatnot, really kind of like dissecting ingredients and stuff.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: And I always wonder, it's like, you know, it's one thing to do that on on uh Instagram, but then when you're in your shoes and you're sitting there in a lab trying to formulate a wonderful product, you know what I mean?
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Like how you deal with all the things that are you know being put into it and how they work together.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: I it must be such a complex process.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: So I actually don't sit behind in the lab making it, um, but I do get the I do have lots of imps there, and I both input in the actual product development portion of it and the testing of it, but it's also you know, we always say we don't test on animals, we test on us.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: So um, and by the way, I have the world's most sensitive skin.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: So if you you know, if you look at me the wrong way, I break out in hive.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: So the fact that I don't break out from any of these and they're actually doing what they're saying they're doing, um, is one of our big tests of uh satisfaction.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: I will tell you though, I'm the same way.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: My sense my skin is so finicky, and so I love hearing that.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Um, I I know for a fact on Instagram, you guys are huge.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: Naturally serious is everywhere on everyone's Instagram feed, like you know, it's just blowing up.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: People are really loving your product, so you know, it must be, I mean, it must be, you know, suitable for every skin type because you know, and and it's it's you just said something makes me so happy, first of all, because launching a skincare brand, you know, in 2018 at the very end of the year, um, we had to be a digitally first brand.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: And and to me, um, authenticity uh outweighs you know any of the other ways of getting your word out there.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: So our ratings and reviews are probably the most coveted and super important to us um way of how we judge ourselves.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Um and we actually read them all.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: We have I wouldn't call them um parties, these you know, reading and review parties, but these days that it's actually some of the only fun we have is just reading them.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: And you know, we actually make changes based on them.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, back in very early reviews on one of our components, um, you know, someone was saying it wasn't pumping properly, and then a couple of other people chimed in and said it wasn't pumping properly.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: And it was an airless pump.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Um, but we did look into it and we were able to make the proper adjustments and uh with the manufacturer of the components, and you know, now it pumps without any issues, but it was an issue that we learned just by reading our own ratings and reviews.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: I love that you're taking the consumer feedback and really applying it.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: I know a lot of people, um, you know, a lot of consumers, Instagrammers, anyone, you know, and they're like, well, companies don't listen, but it's like, here we are, you know, here we are listening to you.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: And yeah, obviously companies listen.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: So I I really, really love that.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: That's truly commendable.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: I think it's you know, I can't think of doing it any other way.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: Like I can't can't imagine not doing it, but I'm you know, it's it's it's how we grow and it's it also helps us understand because you know, we also get a lot of emails on our customer service account, what people love, what they're looking for, what they would love to see.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: And that's part of how we innovate as well.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, for me, like beauty is such it's something that I like the reason I, you know, I love skincare because it's this way of enhancing natural beauty, and I think that's so awesome with your line because it's you know naturally serious.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: So natural beauty.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: So, what do you think about natural beauty?
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Like, what's your idea of natural beauty?
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, it's a great question, and and I can't answer it for me personally.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Um, I I look at my my skin as my canvas, and I like to keep it as clean and no pun intended there as possible.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: But um, I I don't like the way heavy, I never have liked the way heavy makeup looks.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't like the way it cracks, I don't, I just don't like the way it looks to other people looking at you.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Um, and I've never been into, if you will, color.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Um, a little bit here and there for sure, but it's just not some, you know, I think natural beauty really shines through.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: You don't have to have the most beautiful face to really shine through and and make yourself beautiful.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: So um I one of the things that I've said really early on, and I I mean when I say really early on, like when I was a teenager before I was in the industry, and the reason why I guess I'm anti-heavy makeup is because um, you know, if your skin is growing, then your confidence is strong.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: And when your confidence is there, you know, you don't need to cover it up with makeup.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: And uh I think you know, giving women the skin they deserve and uh everyone should have if they can is the best way to do that.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: And you know, your smile and your eyes sparkling go right along with you know the biggest organ in your body being your skin to really kind of shine to.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: And you know, also I think that feeds into this whole conversation about you know, be yourself and everyone's beautiful.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: And you know, I hear these things so much, especially in social media, where you have people posting about, well, you know, everyone's beautiful, but it's like that that's very true, but it's like you have to follow that up by not following trends, in my opinion.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: So, like when you focus on your skin, yeah, it sounds kind of counterintuitive.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, you can still be trendy and not be and not be trendy, if you know what I mean.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: You can still be the best you you can be without having to, you know, you can still like something that's super cool and that you may not be wearing in five years from now, um, you know, whether it be a hot pink lipstick or a fluorescent shirt or whatever it is.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: But you know, um, this the products we have are sort of timeless in that sense, and really creating giving women that confidence where they can go out there and be it whatever it is they want to be and really shine.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: That's that's my goal.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you're really achieving that goal, genuinely, because you know, this this whole yeah, no, I mean it.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: I really mean it.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's like I I think that it's very important to highlight brands such as yourself because like I I know there's a lot of young girls out there that are very inclined towards you know, makeup and they want to look like the Instagram models and all this stuff.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: And I always think to myself, well, that's not realistic, you know what I mean?
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: It's not it's not gonna be um conducive to your career and your career environment.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: So to work on your skin from an early age is so, so important.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, I remember my mother back in the day, you know, growing up, I would see her doing all sorts of natural, you know, home remedy stuff, you know.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: And I used to think to myself, like, my mother never wore makeup, so I never was inclined to really be like, you know, into makeup.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but the skincare aspect was always there in our family and you know, in our culture.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: And so um, when I that's how that's why I'm so obsessed with skincare, honestly.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I mean, listen, I remember the only product my grandmother had that she didn't make herself was pons, you know, oil of Olay and Pons.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Like it was Oh yeah, yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: And it had that really stinky old lady smell.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and she said I and she used to mix her own ingredients in with the product.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: So she was getting the base, I guess, and then using her own antioxidants and you know, her own crushed tea leaves and her own cranberry pomegranate seeds.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, watching her crush them all, mixing them in.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: I thought she was nuts um and leaving it on her skin and then washing it off.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: And I said, wasn't that a moisturizer?
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: And she's like, No, no, no, it's the mask.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: No, I I love that.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: I really like and honestly, no hate to ponds or cold cream because I like that.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Was the first, I think, beauty product that I was like, oh my gosh, what is this?
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: No, I'm totally with you, but did have that stink to it.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: And I it does, it no, it does.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: I think one of the big um sort of bright lights that went on for me is when Dove did that real beauty pledge.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: I don't know, was that was like late 2000s, early 2010s, um, where they were showing all body types, and it was like the kind of the spark of of social media at the same time, like, oh my god, look at this woman, she's got cellulite showing, and and it was like, but they were all so beautiful and every size, every shape.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: And I was like, you know, we can do the same with our skin, right?
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: It just brings your face forward.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Like I completely agree with you, and I and I think you know, people just need to stand out.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: It really is about standing out and being an individual and being proud of who you are and this, you know what I mean, and doing what's right for yourself.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: So I I agree with you.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: I think that's the dove really did make a big impact in that category.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: I want to ask you one thing though, because I noticed that you guys are gluten-friendly or gluten-free, right?
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I'm asking you that because I have Hashimoto's, and one of the triggers for Hashimoto's is gluten.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: It's it's a it's not like celiacs where celiacs is like a gluten allergy.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Hashimoto's is more of those, like, you know, dairy, gluten, all that bad stuff.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Like it really irritates our skin.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: So I really, really love that because there are so many people right now, um, according to like just you know, the medical research out there, that autoimmune disease is more prevalent in women.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: And a lot of the times autoimmune diseases have this trigger, which is a lot of times gluten.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: So that is a huge thing for exactly.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: That's the doctor in you.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: You know, I've got to tell you, you just opened my eyes up yet again because I did not know that about the Hashimoto's.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: And I'm a hypothyroid.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: So it's a similar situation, which may explain why both of us have such very finicky skin.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I am actually plagued with the bunch of really strange um immune issues that, you know, rhinoids and other other little weird, you know, kind of nuances versus something that's really um holding me back too much.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: But I noticed that my skincare products are definitely something that um has an immediate impact in a negative way if I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: So I always when I get my bags, I can't help but try everything out there because it's just in my nature to see what else is out there, what you know, what can we do better, etc.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: And um and I and that is a fascinating um aspect of I've never I just knew we wanted to be that.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: Um and I didn't realize actually how amazing it would be for even myself that that was the correlation there.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: So wow, thank you.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, no, no.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, I really, really, really want to highlight that about your brand because gluten is, you know, I can tell you immediately.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know if you have the same experience, but you know, trying skincare products and you see start seeing that redness on your cheeks.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: And you know, that is like a sensitivity reaction.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: So, like when you have something with no gluten in it or no allergens or nothing like that, you're not gonna see that.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: And I think a lot of times people confuse that redness and they think, oh, it's blood flow to my skin.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: It is, but it's not the good blood flow, you know what I mean?
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Where um where it's like a dermatologist's office.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: So I really, really love that you guys truly are clean beauty, no no BS, you know what I mean?
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: It's it's really well formulated.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: I really appreciate that about your brand.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: I'm so excited.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad for you to try it all.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: Let us know what you think of everything because it's oh my gosh, yeah.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: So please send me whatever you think is good.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, everything.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: I know you're gonna get a full line.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: I didn't know everything, it's on its way.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: I love you, you're amazing.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've been wanting to try your line for so long because I like I said, uh, it's all over Instagram.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: Rochelle, it's literally all over.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so okay, so let's talk about one more thing.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: So TSA approved.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: What does that mean?
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: Because I love that.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: With the exception of our cleanser, which is 3.4 ounces, um, or by these four ounces, sorry, everything is 3.4 or below.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, we're not traveling as much as we used to here, but if it can travel with you on a plane, it can certainly fit in your bag and travel with you during the day, whatever it is that you're doing.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: So, you know, back in the day when we used to go to the gym, um, it was my my favorite product are cold pressed peel pads, and I literally can't leave home without them.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: And it's in a nice container, and you can bring it anywhere and put it on an airplane.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that because TSA is a huge problem.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I have you don't know how many bottles of cleansers or serums I've had to throw out because of them.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: I know, and I get so when I look at that pile of the garbage with all the products in there, I cringe.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's like$500 down the drink.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: That's like my plane ticket.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: I hope the um TSA team gets to take them home, doesn't have to like burn them or something.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, you would hope, but I don't think they do.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I would want I almost want like a donation bin in the airport.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: But yeah, no, I I really, really love that.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: The TSA approved thing because it's it's you know, I was talking to um, I feel like I bring this up every episode.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: When we were talking to Jackson Lane, um, you know, Alex brought up the whole flying thing, you know, like when you're traveling, it's so difficult to carry cleansers and stuff.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: So when I saw that, I was like, this is awesome.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Lots of travel sizes too.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: So don't worry about that cleanser being too big.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Um, so okay, I do want to talk to you about your clinical testing because um, you know, it's it's something that obviously, you know, with my medical background, I'm I'm obviously drawn to that um aspect of skincare.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: So can you tell me a little bit about your work with dermatologists or medical professionals?
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, how did you go about that?
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Did you seek somebody out individually or was it part of the formulation team that you have?
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: It was part of the formulation team.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, having like, for example, our um eye products, they always have to be ophthalmologically approved and tested.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: Um then the ingredients and the blends in which we do it, we you know, we do before and afters, we test for efficacy, um, and really just everything that we're putting together, making sure they do exactly what they say they're doing.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: And we use um a team of doctors for that, as well as um, you know, you other humans besides just you know our own internal team, just to make sure we're covering all different kinds of skin types, skin concerns, skin conditions, and making sure that they're seeing the same benefits, that there's no counterindications as we're talking about before, um, and making sure everything we're we we're wanting to achieve before we launch is actually exactly what you're getting um during the testing phase.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: So that's you know how we got there.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: I really love that.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: And you know, there's nothing wrong with the reason I I'm I'm bringing that up is because a lot of people are kind of skeptical where they're like, well, where's the dermatologist?
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, they're part of the formulation team.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: What do you mean?
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's there is very specific testing that um our chemists could tell you about that we're doing with um the doctors to make sure in the certain you know you put the product in your eye to test it for ophthalmologically tested, and um, there are very strict testing requirements, and that's all done on our lab side.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: I really love that.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: And you know, I I wanna I want to actually ask about um, so you know, for me it's interesting because when I think of like natural ingredients, I think of the extraction mechanism, right?
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: Because like back in the day, I published a paper and I was doing like natural extractions of like eucalyptus and all these things and testing them on like Pichu dishes um against bacteria.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: And I remember just that process wasn't very difficult, but optimizing that.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: So when you um when you were formulating, was it like a natural extract way of doing it, or did you just take like whole ingredients and just kind of I mean, I I really don't know much about formulation, so right.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, I again I'm not the bench chemist, but we're doing exactly what you just said.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: So we do both of those.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: Um times where it's extracts where you know that the extract based on other studies um is going to perform exactly the way you need it to in a product.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Um, and there are times when it's the you know the whole ingredient that's performing.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: So it depends on what the active ingredient is.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: So I'll tell you on our um antioxidant blend, those are all you know the extracts.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: And as far as um, you know, all of our products um for an untrained uh skincare person, they would all say they're fragranced because you can smell something.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: Um, but everything you're smelling is a natural aromatic.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: So are the extracts exactly the way you're describing them.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: And funny enough, um, or I should say ironically, uh given how dry it is right now, this time of year, um, I just purchased all new humidifiers.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: That was my big home upgrade.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Um, because you're locked in all day, um, you know, homeschooling uh two teenage boys, it can get very dry.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: So um all the humidifiers now have an um an aromatherapy oil area.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: So my my one room smelled like lavender, one is um eucalyptus, and one room is tea tree right now.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: You smell like a garden, like in your home.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: Like amazing what a difference it is.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: You know, I always say it it's it's not just skincare, it's all the other things that you're doing.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I I really should have said this early on, and you can attest to this given your background, but it's not just that I have great skin because I use my products.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: I have great skin because I take care of myself from the inside out, and I use only great products.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: And meaning what that to me means, I am incredibly hydrated.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: I am drinking as much water as I possibly can, um, which is actually easier at home than it is in in the office for those working from home for the first time.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Um, because you don't have to walk to the water cooler.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: It's you know, it's it's much closer proximity, if you will.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: The restroom isn't too far away.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Um, and staying hydrated is especially when you're stuck inside in dry environments, that's horrible for your skin.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: So I I want you to think about ingestibles, honestly.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because like serious, I completely agree with what you said.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, it really is, and you have to drink that water and you have to take these ingredients in um in a systemic way, you know what I mean, to where they're like really, really helping you in your whole body.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: So I completely agree with you.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: And I think that have you thought about that?
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Like going in the route of ingestibles?
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Well, I think that I have not.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: I'm always open to it, but whenever I Google something that I think is going to be a white space, it's always overcrowded.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I have I use um in all of my water, um uh I use Pure Inventions, which has an extract, my favorite.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: There's a coconut one, there's a peach one, there's you know, all kinds of amazing like natural flavors that you just add a couple of drops into your water, and then your plain water, you kind of feel like you're giving yourself a treat.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: So it's much easier to drink, and it's actually quite delicious, uh, making the job of drinking water, which actually is a job to a lot of people, um, you know, kind of more fun and delicious.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: So whatever you can, just kind of amping up the atmosphere of your surroundings, um, with you know whatever it is.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: So I love listening to meditation music while I'm sitting in front of my computer.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: I like having my water there.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: I, you know, little small reminder.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: So my water is in a swell water bottle, you know, once again, environment being very important to us.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: And um, but I got that swell water bottle on a 90-mile hike I did in Malibu.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: So, like it reminds me, look how strong we are, look how resilient we're gonna be.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: We're gonna get through all of this, and every single aspect of everything we're doing um to in our daily lives is kind of what's coming out through our skin.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: So how I look at it.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: No, it's beautiful.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: I love that, and I think that you know, um, more people need to realize that we have to be like that.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: The meditation thing is amazing.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: I I'm like in love with you already, by the way, because I am obsessed with meditation and I drink a lot of water.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's true though, because it's it's all the things together that that come out of your skin, right?
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: So um you just it's you're not gonna get um great skin if you're doing nothing, you know, dried up like a prune and not keeping hydrated.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: So that's right.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: And you know, meditation, I I want to keep going back to that because the self-care aspect of skincare is so underrated.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Like it's like, you know, we have all these things, but then no one wants to talk about that 15 minutes at night where you just quiet your mind and rest, you know, and then and how important rest and sleep are for skin health.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's something that I don't know why it's not highlighted enough.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Like it's like like we can put anything we want on our face, but at the end of the day, if we don't take care of our bodies and if we're not approaching this in a holistic way, we're not gonna see those dramatic changes that we want to see in our skin and our glow, you know, our skin glowing or whatnot.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: So I think yeah, you brought up 100% sure.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: And I can tell you, and you can attest to this, is you know, your skin does all of its healing and you know treatments while you're sleeping.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: So um that's the best time to heal your skin.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: And that's why I like I love using um a mask at night, a sleep mask at night, because it's really helping what your body's already doing, but just doing it better and more efficiently.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I think people don't realize how much.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you have a really bad day and you go to bed and your skin just looks trash, um, you can wash it, put your mask on, and by the time you wake up, you can't even believe how bad your skin looked the day before because it's glowing.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sleep, rest, drink, and you can take care of yourself.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: You can fix it overnight.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: I agree, I agree.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: I I want to ask you though, how do you feel about sheet masks?
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: I love them.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I feel like I feel like you guys should come out with a sheet mask.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know you know, I can tell you first of all, um, I love, love, love, love sheet masks.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: I've been using them, I think before anyone else, just because of what I do.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Um, before they were really popular, um in the in 1999 I used my first sheet mask.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Um, I used hydrogel mask.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's all kinds of amazing masks, sheet masks out there.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: And yeah, if there's an opportunity for us to come out with one, I'm totally gonna do that.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Um I don't want to just come out with one that just could put naturally serious on it when I think there's so many other great ones out there.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: There's gotta be a point of difference, and that's kind of how we come out with all our products.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: There's every single one of our products has a point of difference and something that's uniquely better than what's out there already.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: That's really good because there's so much clutter in the skincare space right now.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: So it's like you yeah.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, and and I mentioned sheet mask because, like, as a busy woman, I'm sure you you know, you can relate to this is like you know, it's easy for us to just pop that thing into our bag and then just go.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, I know when I'm like, you know, working, I can just pop it on my face and be like, okay, I'm done.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: 30 minutes done.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: So I love that.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: But this is also a really funny quick story about sheet mask.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: So I've been, as I said, I've been using them forever.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: And the first time um I used one was actually on an airplane.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: I I think it could have been 1999 or 2000, and everyone was staring at me like I was some sort of freak, right?
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: But all these years later, I was just on another really long flight about a year ago, my last long flight, I guess, at this point.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and there was all these women wearing sheet masks on the older.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, I love this.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: You're a trendsetter, Rochelle.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: You're just you're a trendsetter.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: So you're not that freak that looks like a ghost anymore.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: You're actually like, you know, part of the trend.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: It's like the you know, the lights go off and everyone ready for takeoff.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Take out the sheet masks.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Well, Rochelle, this was such a lovely experience.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: You are so so awesome, and I'm I'm inspired by your line, honestly.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: I've been like look for it.
