- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:14It's the 16th of July. And clever you for tapping on
- 0:18play and inviting me into your day.
- 0:20I hope you're going well. I hope that it is a good moment
- 0:25that you can stop and you can put down all the busyness of the
- 0:28day. Our days are busy, aren't they?
- 0:30Even when we're on holidays like I am this week.
- 0:32Hey, things are still busy. There's still a lot going on.
- 0:36We're trying to cram things into our time.
- 0:40And then when we retire, people who retire tell me, Sean, I
- 0:44don't know how I had time to work when I when I wasn't
- 0:47retired. So that doesn't give me much
- 0:48hope for more calm and peaceful existence.
- 0:51So I think life is just full. That's just how we roll.
- 0:55And if that's the case, great to have a moment where we can come
- 0:58before God and hear His word as we are moving through Moses
- 1:03exploration of how people are to live in this new land under
- 1:08God's law. And today we move to the next
- 1:11set of commandments which are about human dignity.
- 1:14Of course, with the next commandment being you shall not
- 1:18murder. So today some laws will be set
- 1:21out to protect the dignity of human life in this new society.
- 1:27So let us read it together friends, as we explore Moses
- 1:31words in Deuteronomy chapter 19. When the Lord your God destroys
- 1:46the nations whose land he is giving you, you will take over
- 1:49their land and settle in their towns and homes.
- 1:53Then you must set apart three cities of refuge in the land the
- 1:57Lord your God is giving you. Survey the territory and divide
- 2:01the land the Lord your God is giving you into 3 districts.
- 2:05Then anyone who has killed someone can flee to one of the
- 2:09cities of refuge for safety. If someone kills another person
- 2:13unintentionally with that previous hostility, the Slayer
- 2:17may flee to any of these cities to live in safety.
- 2:21For example, suppose someone goes into the forest with a
- 2:24neighbour to cut wood, and suppose one of them swings and
- 2:27axe to chop down a tree, and the axe head flies off the handle,
- 2:31killing the other person. In such cases, the Slayer may
- 2:35flee to one of the cities of refuge to live in safety.
- 2:40If the distance to the nearest city of refuge is too far, an
- 2:43enraged avenger might be able to chase down and kill the person
- 2:47who caused the death. Then the Slayer would die
- 2:50unfairly, since he had never shown hostility toward the
- 2:54person who died. That is why I'm commanding you
- 2:57to set aside three cities of refuge.
- 3:00And if the Lord your God enlarges your territory as he
- 3:04swore to your ancestors, and gives you all the land he
- 3:07promised you, you must designate three additional cities of
- 3:11refuge. He will give you this land if
- 3:13you are careful to obey all the commands I've given you, if you
- 3:17always love the Lord your God and walk in His ways.
- 3:22That way you will prevent the death of innocent people in the
- 3:25land the Lord your God is giving you as your special possession.
- 3:29You will not be held responsible for the death of innocent
- 3:31people. But suppose someone is hostile
- 3:35toward a neighbour and deliberately ambushes and
- 3:38murders him, and then flees to one of the cities of refuge.
- 3:42In that case, the elders of the murderer's hometown must send
- 3:46agents to the city of refuge to bring him back and hand him over
- 3:50to the dead person's avenger to be put to death.
- 3:53Do not feel sorry for that murderer.
- 3:55Purge from Israel the guilt of murdering innocent people.
- 3:59Then all will go well with you when you arrive in the land the
- 4:04Lord your God is giving you as your special possession.
- 4:07You must never steal anyone's land by moving the boundary
- 4:11markers your ancestors set up to mark their property.
- 4:15You must not convict anyone of a crime on the testimony of only
- 4:18one witness. The facts of the case must be
- 4:21established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
- 4:26If a malicious witness comes forward and accuses someone of a
- 4:29crime, then both the accuser and accused must appear before the
- 4:34Lord by coming to the priests and judges in office.
- 4:37At that time the judges must investigate the case thoroughly.
- 4:42If the accuser has brought false charges against his fellow
- 4:45Israelite, you must impose on the accuser the sentence he
- 4:50intended for the other person. This way you will purge such
- 4:54evil from among you. Then the rest of the people will
- 4:58hear about it and be afraid to do such an evil thing.
- 5:02You must show no pity for the guilty.
- 5:05Your rules should be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for
- 5:10tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
- 5:25Our Lord, this concept of justice has become deeply
- 5:29ingrained in our society. An eye for an eye.
- 5:32How often do we hear that thrown around?
- 5:36Oh Jesus, while this certainly was the way that that you wanted
- 5:41your people to live at that time to understand what justice
- 5:44looked like, then you came along and showed us a whole new way, a
- 5:50way of forgiveness, a way of grace, a way of restoration.
- 5:58And all of that is only possible because you came Jesus, and you
- 6:02restored us and restored away to the Father.
- 6:08Thank you that we live under this new covenant that you have
- 6:13brought us, a covenant of grace, a covenant where we know that we
- 6:17are loved beyond our ability to understand by a loving, gracious
- 6:23God. So help us live in your
- 6:28forgiveness and share that love, grace, and forgiveness with
- 6:31those around us too. Ah, we thank you Jesus, and we
- 6:35pray all of this in your loving name, Amen.
