0:04
This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
0:08
Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
0:12
County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
0:16
continues teaching through God's Word.
0:37
Verse 7 says for a Bishop. Must be blameless.
0:40
As a steward of God, if we're stewards of.
0:42
God, then we must understand that we don't own anything.
0:46
Anything that we have is given to us or entrusted to us.
0:51
To watch over to. Manage It is not that we own it.
0:55
We don't own a ministry. We don't have our own people.
0:59
The congregation belongs to the Lord.
1:02
Jesus is head of the church. We all answer to him, and that's
1:06
why the. Word of God is the authority.
1:08
Have you ever had keys to your workplace before?
1:11
That can be a big responsibility.
1:14
A lot of places don't just hand over keys to anyone.
1:17
They give them to those they know they can trust.
1:20
When you're given the keys to your workplace, you know that
1:23
it's not so that you could do whatever you want, but so that
1:26
you could carry out the business of your employer.
1:29
In his message today, Pastor Lewis shares with you that when
1:32
God gives you responsibility in the body of Christ, it's for the
1:36
purpose of doing his work. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
1:41
book of Titus, chapter one with today's edition of Living Waters
1:45
of Grace. Now this.
1:47
Whole word, The Senate order. That whole word.
1:50
Really is a medical term. And it's a term that really
1:54
deals or refers to. Setting a bone.
1:57
Setting a bone. Setting something that is out of
2:00
place in your body? Some orthopedic problem that you
2:03
may have. That's out of place, Paul says.
2:06
It's it's a setting in order when those things are out of
2:09
order if we have a limb. That's out of order.
2:12
If we have anything that's not lined up right, which.
2:15
Is why a lot of people will go. You know to the.
2:17
Specialist to. Line them up and.
2:19
Get their bodies. Right, because things are out of
2:21
order. And when they're not in order,
2:24
it causes pain, it causes discomfort.
2:26
It causes. Overcompensation of other.
2:28
Limbs or other areas of your body.
2:31
Making just cause of dysfunction in your system when things are
2:34
out of order. Sometimes a bone out of order
2:36
causes problems and if the body or limb is out of.
2:39
Order it will let. You know.
2:41
Because there is. You know that the body system is
2:44
is chaotic and it just doesn't function properly well.
2:49
The church is exact. Same way when things are out of.
2:51
Order if there. Is no order in the.
2:54
Church there is. Problems.
2:57
It doesn't function properly. It doesn't function properly.
3:01
Then there has to be overcompensation because
3:03
somebody is doing too much, because it's not enough.
3:06
This is lacking. So somebody feels they got to go
3:08
over and do that, and then that's lacking.
3:10
So somebody for the overcompensation.
3:12
So people are being burned out. People are being, you know, not
3:15
used. Properly.
3:16
Or people are getting upset. I mean, when the church is is
3:20
not in order, things happen in the church.
3:23
But when it's set in order, when leadership is set in order and
3:27
things are in order in the church, things go a lot more
3:30
smoothly. There's not as much affliction,
3:32
there's not as much chaos, there's not division and the
3:35
kind of things that can happen when things are.
3:38
Out of order. And the same thing happens in
3:40
our own home if things are out of order at home.
3:43
It's crazy. It's crazy.
3:46
But when things are in order at home, things run a lot more
3:50
smoothly. And that's exactly.
3:51
What, Paul? Is telling Titus put things in
3:55
order first thing to do? Is to.
3:56
Put things in. Order So what?
4:00
Did he do? He commanded him to put.
4:02
Elders approved elders. In every church.
4:07
So in verse 6. It talks about what the the
4:09
attributes. Are of these men who are to be
4:11
put in place and he says if a man is blameless, the first
4:15
thing he addresses is the man's home ministry.
4:18
He says if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having
4:21
faithful children, not accused of dissipation or
4:24
insubordination. He said if a man is going to be
4:28
an elder in the church. He first of all.
4:30
Needs to have his home ministry taken care of.
4:34
He needs to be the man. He He reminds us again of what
4:37
he told Timothy. You know he needs to be a man, a
4:41
man, a husband of one wife. And we talked about.
4:45
What that meant before. He can't have 3 or 4 living
4:48
wives, you know? You know you can't.
4:50
We're to talk about just having one wife at a time.
4:52
You marry one divorcer, marry another divorcer.
4:54
He's not talking about that either.
4:56
You know that's not one wife, OK, One wife.
4:58
Is if you if a leader is married.
5:01
And if the wife. Dies.
5:02
He can remarry, OK, but not just, you know, divorce and
5:06
divorce and divorce and divorce. And just to you know, I don't
5:09
like her. So she's no longer going to be
5:10
my wife. I'm going to take this one now.
5:12
Can't do it. That's not what that's not what
5:14
the Lord intends. It's not what the Lord intends,
5:16
but it's one wife, husband of one wife.
5:19
He said having children. Faithful.
5:23
Children. That means children.
5:24
Who are are faithful? These are These are.
5:26
Children who you can rely on Children you can depend on.
5:29
Children who would. You know who?
5:30
Who are good examples to some degree and that's why a lot of.
5:34
People call them pre. K's, you know, a lot of kids
5:36
don't like to. Be called pre-K.
5:38
'S because that means that they're kind of out there.
5:40
People can see. Their their lives and it's true
5:43
people who are. Raised in the church if they
5:46
have. Children, their kids.
5:47
Are looked upon me and you know they want they they should be.
5:50
They're supposed to be an example.
5:52
It's supposed to be an example. Now we're only talking about the
5:55
kids who live in the home. We're not talking about kids who
5:57
don't live in the home. You don't.
5:58
No control. Over kids that are.
6:00
Grown adults and they're doing their own thing, making their
6:02
own decisions. That's not what he's talking
6:04
about. He's talking about the kids who
6:05
are living in your home. Those kids should be kids who
6:10
are faithful. And not accused of dissipation
6:14
or insubordination. They should be.
6:15
Kids who will. Respond to authority and not be
6:19
those who are. Rebellious to authority.
6:22
He said. And basically we're saying is if
6:24
a man can't take care of his own home, then how's he going to be
6:27
able to? Watch over a church How's.
6:29
He going to be able to watch. Over a church.
6:31
And verse 7 says for a Bishop must be blameless as a steward.
6:35
Of God if we're stewards of. God, then we must understand
6:39
that we don't own anything. Anything that we have is given
6:43
to us or entrusted to us. To watch over to.
6:47
Manage It is not that we own it. We don't own a ministry.
6:51
We don't have our own people. The congregation belongs to the
6:55
Lord. Jesus is head of the church.
6:57
We all answer to him, and that's why the word of.
7:00
God is the authority. Because we answer to him, we
7:04
don't answer to just a man. Because a man can tell us to do
7:06
anything we answer. To the Lord Jesus.
7:09
Christ according to this word, and that's why it's really
7:13
important to be in a Bible believing, Bible teaching
7:15
church. Somebody who really upholds the
7:18
word of God and. That being the authority, that
7:23
being the. Authority.
7:25
So a Bishop. Must be a steward.
7:28
Now a steward must be faithful. That is a.
7:30
Requirement of a. Steward.
7:32
A steward. Must be faithful.
7:33
First Corinthians chapter 4 verse one and two says let a man
7:37
so consider us. As servants of Christ.
7:40
And stewards of the mysteries of God, moreover.
7:44
It is. Required in stewards that one be
7:48
found faithful, so it's a requirement to be.
7:51
Faithful. It's not perfect.
7:52
We're not going to be perfect, but we should be faithful.
7:55
We should be reliable. We should be reliable.
7:58
We should at least do what we say.
8:00
We're going to do and the things that.
8:03
We are to do. We should be.
8:05
Counted upon to do it not wondering if well.
8:09
We're supposed to have. Bible study here, but I don't
8:11
know if the pastor's going to show up or not, you know?
8:14
We're supposed to have a. Wedding but I don't know if he's
8:17
going to show up and do the wedding or not.
8:19
You know, has to be reliable. Has to be somebody who's
8:21
reliable and then he goes on. He says that he can Now these
8:25
are the not the things that he should not be He should not be
8:28
self willed. He should not be quick tempered.
8:30
He should not be given to wine. He should not be violent.
8:33
Nobody wants a. Pastor that's out there.
8:35
Or elder that's out there in the, you know, out there in the
8:38
streets fighting all the time, you know, fisticuffs, somebody
8:41
gets into an argument with him. Come on, we can take this
8:43
outside. I don't think y'all want to hear
8:46
that out of your pastor. You know, you know, we're always
8:51
brawling you. Know what I mean?
8:52
Getting into arguments with you all the time.
8:54
Word debates and, you know, always arguing and just, you
8:58
know, I got to be right. Because it's self willed.
9:00
You know, I mean, that's not a good.
9:02
Attribute for a pastor. So we should not be violent,
9:07
should not be greedy for money. You know, it's very dangerous
9:10
for a pastor who is greedy for money in the church.
9:12
Because if he's greedy for money, then now you got to watch
9:14
over the offerings and make. Sure that that's always.
9:17
Being used. For what it should.
9:19
Be used for and all things are accounted for financially.
9:23
If he's greedy for money, he's going to always be looking for
9:25
schemes to try to make more money and that maybe, you know,
9:28
even farming out himself for more speaking engagement
9:30
somewhere so he can make money doing that.
9:32
And then, you know, you're here on Sunday, left without, you
9:36
know, your pastor speaking to to you on Sundays.
9:38
You know what I mean? So you know you should not be
9:40
greedy for money. Verse 8 says he.
9:43
Should be hospitable now these are things that a pastor.
9:46
Should be we just? Mentioned 5 things that he
9:48
shouldn't be, but these are things that he should be and
9:51
it's about 6 of them. He says he should be hospitable.
9:54
He should be the. Lover of what?
9:55
Is good and that lover of. What is good?
9:58
Is actually not. Just what is good?
10:01
In terms of things. But also good people.
10:04
OK, an elder, a leader in. The church should be.
10:06
Someone who associates with. Believers who are believers who
10:11
were good and. That doesn't mean that he never
10:13
associates with unbelievers. It's not what we're saying.
10:16
What we're saying is though. He should associate with good
10:19
people. You know, because.
10:20
The Bible. Tells us in First Corinthians
10:22
what 1533 that evil communications corrupt good
10:26
manners, and then in Proverbs 1320 says that you.
10:30
Walk with the wise. You'll be wise.
10:32
But you know the companions and fools.
10:34
Will be destroyed, so. We have to make sure that we.
10:37
Associate with. Good people.
10:40
I mean that, you know. All of us should.
10:42
Should make sure. That we're associated with good
10:44
people because our good habits. Can be corrupted if we're
10:49
constantly exposing ourselves to people who don't.
10:53
Believe what we believe. And not walking out what we or
10:57
trying to walk. Out what we believe so lover of
10:59
what is good. Sober minded, Clear minded.
11:03
Just righteous, upright. Mean living uprightly, living
11:07
justly, holy, being separated unto God, self-control, having
11:13
that self-control again. And that's.
11:14
Really very similar to the attribute.
11:17
Which talks about being sober minded, but the difference here
11:21
is that he should be under self-control.
11:23
That means that he's not just out trying to.
11:26
Please his. Flesh.
11:27
And he's always giving into his flesh.
11:30
He doesn't have no. Control over his flesh.
11:33
He doesn't have no. Self-control.
11:35
No self. Constraint to not do things that
11:38
are disorderly but pleasing the flesh.
11:41
Talk a little bit a little bit more about that.
11:43
And then verse 9 says beholding. Fast, the faithful Word.
11:47
As he has been taught, that means the faithful word that we
11:50
have been taught. Through the scriptures we've
11:52
been taught. It through the scriptures and we
11:54
hold. That fast.
11:55
Not some man made. Theory about what the scriptures
12:00
say. Or some man made.
12:01
Theory about. Some other doctrine.
12:04
That they are. Putting in place of the Bible,
12:07
that should not be. We should hold fast the faithful
12:10
word as He has. Been taught and the reason why.
12:13
Is so that. He may be able by sound doctrine
12:18
both to resort and that means to encourage or to.
12:23
Warn OK to courage. Or to warn and convict.
12:28
That means the conviction of error.
12:30
To convict someone of error that someone is.
12:32
Able to see. And someone able to.
12:34
Come to the place by. Hearing sound doctrine, they're
12:37
able to come to the. Place that they realize.
12:40
That what they're doing or what they're saying is in error.
12:43
They're convicted of it. OK, so they're convicted.
12:47
Those who? Contradict like those who are
12:49
going against it. And that's exactly.
12:52
What the word of God does for. Us, you know, we really don't
12:55
have to. It's not the power that any one
12:57
of us has in US that causes someone to see that they're in
13:00
error. It's the word of God all you got
13:02
to do. Is just bring the word.
13:03
Of God and share look. This is what you said and this
13:05
is what the. Word of God says.
13:07
They can see themselves that they're in error.
13:09
I don't have to do anything to try to convince them that
13:12
they're in error. I don't have to, you know, go
13:13
through any kind of, you know, mental gymnastics.
13:16
Or try to put something logical together.
13:18
The word of God tells us. It shows us.
13:21
And that's why when we come to share with someone, if you feel
13:24
that someone has taught something that is not accurate,
13:27
bring your Bible. We sit down and the word of God.
13:30
Will be the authority. Because if you don't bring the
13:32
word of God, then that means I'm either taking your word or
13:34
you're taking my word. That ain't going to work.
13:36
It's not about. Who's right or who's wrong?
13:39
It's about what's right. And what's wrong according to
13:43
the word of God? Amen.
13:46
Amen. Then we go on.
13:47
And he said in verse 10, he says now for there are many
13:51
insubordinate, insubordinate, unruly.
13:54
People he's. Talking about the false teachers
13:56
that are in Crete now that he sent Titus back to deal with,
14:00
you know. Titus had a really tough job.
14:03
I mean, because he's going into an area that's really dangerous.
14:06
He's going into an. Area where people are, they
14:09
don't really, they don't take real.
14:10
Kindly to hearing new things and all of us when we go and share.
14:15
The Gospel with people. We are sharing the gospel with
14:18
some people who don't like to hear new things.
14:21
They don't want to hear things. About Jesus Christ.
14:24
And we're sharing the gospel with these people and tell them
14:27
I'm telling you I have been cussed.
14:29
Out. On the streets, sharing the.
14:32
Gospel of Jesus Christ because they get just.
14:35
That angry? So it's really a it's a
14:39
dangerous. Job, to some degree of what Paul
14:41
was asking him to go in and do, this is a very immoral place.
14:45
And he said, and these people were insubordinate.
14:47
That means that they do not conform.
14:50
To rules they don't. Conform to ruliness or or.
14:53
They don't conform to authority. Rather, it's the authority of
14:56
church leaders or the authority of the Word of God.
15:00
They're insubordinate. They're both.
15:01
Idle talkers and deceivers, these are people.
15:05
Who are idle talk. That means their talk is empty.
15:07
I mean, they share all these things and they get up and they
15:10
talk in front of these people when they share their little
15:12
doctrines, but they're empty. They can't 'cause life change
15:17
because there's no power in it, there's no anointing in it.
15:20
It may sound good, it may sound logical, it may stimulate the
15:23
flesh, but there's no. Power in it.
15:25
There's nothing that changes. The heart.
15:29
And we need things that we need to.
15:30
Hear the word of God, because it's the Word.
15:32
Of God that changes our hearts when we.
15:35
Got saved it. Wasn't someone's logic or
15:38
someone's clever. Speech that got us saved.
15:41
It was the true. And the word of.
15:43
God that got us saved, that caused us to see the fact that
15:47
we are. Sinners and we need.
15:50
A savior. It's the word of God that
15:52
reveals that. But when you.
15:54
Have a false teacher. He's not teaching that what they
15:57
teach is empty in. Fact, Jude said.
15:59
They're like. Wells with no water, and they're
16:02
like clouds that have no water. Well, A.
16:05
Cloud that has no water you can't bring forth.
16:07
Life, the whole idea of a. Cloud in the rain is because it
16:10
brings life on the earth, it gives us vegetation and it gives
16:14
us things that we can eat and survive on and that's.
16:17
What the word of God has water it it has it's life.
16:20
Giving. It's life giving.
16:22
Not only life giving, but it's life sustaining.
16:25
Because it can give. Us everlasting, it takes us into
16:27
everlasting life, so he said. And they're deceivers.
16:32
And they're deceivers because? They themselves are deceived.
16:35
They themselves are deceived. Remember what it said over in
16:38
Second Timothy, over in Second Timothy chapter 3 and verse 12.
16:43
It said yes. And all who desire to live godly
16:46
in Christ. Jesus.
16:48
Will suffer persecution 13 but evil men and.
16:52
Impostors will grow. Worse and worse, deceiving and
16:56
being deceived and the reason why they are deceiving.
16:59
Is because they are deceived. By Satan.
17:03
Satan is using them to deceive. Others and that's.
17:07
Why They're being deceived. So then it goes on.
17:09
It says that. These are those.
17:11
Of the circumcision that means those who are.
17:13
The Jewish people who are. Teaching them to come under
17:17
Jewish bondage. Whose mouths must?
17:20
Be stopped who subvert whole. Households teaching them things
17:24
which they ought not now remember back in those.
17:27
Days the church. Was not a church building that
17:29
we have right now. The churches was in homes.
17:31
So these people were going into homes and they were teaching all
17:34
these strange doctrine. They were.
17:35
Trying to take over. You know, the Bible studies and
17:38
they were trying to take over the meetings in these homes and
17:40
and that's why even we here, you know who have Bible studies and
17:44
I thank God that we have. Really a good accountable spirit
17:48
filled teachers. That are teaching the word of
17:51
God and we go to the homes and we hear somebody teaching we're
17:54
going to hear. The true.
17:55
Word of God is coming right out of this.
17:57
I thank God for that. But we must be.
18:00
Careful that visitors. Who will come there?
18:03
That we don't know. That we'll find out about your
18:07
Bible studies. Will try to come in, sit down
18:10
and. Eventually, try to take over
18:11
your Bible study. And try to put in this poison.
18:15
Little by little, try. To introduce this poison and
18:18
try. To corrupt the word of God, we
18:21
have to be careful with that. And be on the.
18:24
Watch out for that. And this is what Paul is saying
18:27
to. Titus, these people we're.
18:29
Putting them in bondage, trying to make these gentile.
18:32
Believers, go back. Into the bondage under the law.
18:36
And they don't have to keep the law.
18:37
They're gentiles. They don't have to keep the law,
18:41
they don't have to be circumcised in order to be
18:43
saved. But this is what they were.
18:44
Teaching whose mouths must. Be stopped who subvert whole.
18:48
Households teaching things which they are not for the sake of
18:53
dishonest gain, so they're doing these things out of the
18:57
selfishness of their own hearts. They're doing it because.
19:00
They want something. It's not real clear exactly what
19:03
that dishonest gain was. I don't.
19:05
Know if that dishonest gain was financial.
19:07
Usually when the Bible talks about dishonest gain,
19:10
greediness, it usually is talking about.
19:13
It usually is. Talking about financial money
19:16
but dishonest gang can also be. Just trying to get their trust,
19:20
Dishonestly trying. To, you know, get them to
19:22
convert to something that is not true dishonestly, you know, So
19:26
we don't know exactly what they mean when they say dishonest
19:28
gang. And then verse 13 it says here
19:31
one of them, a prophet of their own, said Christians must.
19:36
Are always liars, evil beasts, lazy?
19:40
Glutton and Paul said in 13 this testimony.
19:43
Is true. Now that's really wild.
19:46
Now Accretion is talking about his own.
19:49
People and he said. Look man, my people are messed
19:52
up. My people are messed up.
19:58
He didn't just. Say they're liars, he said.
20:01
They always. Lying in.
20:04
Fact they have a. Word in the Mediterranean if
20:07
someone lies. They'll say that they're.
20:10
Cretinizing. That's how much they associate
20:14
lying with the Cretians. They said, oh, he.
20:18
Just cretinized. He's lying.
20:20
That's how bad it is. And he?
20:22
Said they're not just. Evil, he said.
20:24
They're not just beasts, he said.
20:26
They're evil. Beasts.
20:27
They're primal animals. They live their.
20:30
Lives totally doing nothing but, you know, supporting and
20:36
satisfying their flesh. If they want to eat.
20:40
They're just going to go kill something.
20:42
That's what an animal do. An evil beast just get just go
20:44
kill someone. I don't.
20:45
Care what he kills, kills anything, he'll kill his own.
20:47
To eat evil beast they only want.
20:51
To do is eat and mate. However their body drives them,
20:55
that's all they do. And you know, it's funny
20:57
sometimes when we see these commercials and we see.
20:59
These little kids. You know, behind these window
21:01
panes and and we see these animals.
21:03
Out there these big. Tigers and big lions and, you
21:06
know, these big cats and, and, and they're coming up to the.
21:08
Glass Where the kid? Is and then and it looks like
21:11
they're playing with the kid. They're not playing with that
21:13
kid. They're animals.
21:15
Trying to find a way to get over to that kid so we.
21:17
Can eat him. Because that's what they do.
21:20
They're. Driven by that and Paul is
21:24
saying that these. People are evil beasts.
21:28
They're just driven by. Their flesh driven by their
21:32
flesh. And he said they're lazy
21:33
gluttons and the Bible just talk about glutton.
21:35
And this gluttony really means like excess.
21:37
This is somebody who is constantly about excess.
21:41
You know, everything that they do, whether it's eating and here
21:43
and here they are talking about eating for the most part.
21:46
But gluttony can also be anything, you know, being greedy
21:50
for anything, greedy for money, greedy.
21:53
For power. Greedy for fame, greedy for
21:56
position, greedy for anything can be given to gluttony.
22:00
Sexually greedy. You know this insatiable lust or
22:04
whatnot. Gluttony.
22:06
Always in excess wine. In excess of wine, They're just
22:11
the gluttons. And he said they are just.
22:13
Lazy gluttons and. This is what these false
22:16
prophets, this guy's the we're describing false prophets here.
22:20
That are in Crete. That Titus had to deal with.
22:23
So it wasn't an easy job, it was an easy job.
22:27
So I just want to say that you know, one of the things that.
22:30
We have to do as believers is that we always have to check
22:35
ourselves to see where we. Are in the faith.
22:39
Where are we? Are there some areas where I
22:41
really need to give to the? Lord.
22:43
You know, have I become glutton in any area?
22:46
Have I become driven by my flesh in any area of my life?
22:53
Have I began to do? Exercises or do.
22:56
Different things with the truth. Have I begin to play around with
22:59
the truth instead of being a straight shooter?
23:02
Have I begin to manipulate or deceive in any kind of way?
23:07
We have to check these things out because these things can
23:09
subtly creep into our own lives. And this is what the.
23:13
Word of God is. For us, and that's why we
23:15
should. Love it because it is our.
23:18
Measuring. It's our monitor.
23:20
That shows us where. OK, you're too.
23:22
Far to this side. Come on back over, you know,
23:24
we've got cars now that have. These corrective.
23:27
Gadgets in them that if you go across the line it brings you
23:30
back over. Or or gives you a.
23:32
Signal and. That's what the Word of God does
23:34
for us. You're going a little.
23:36
Bit too far, bit bring you back over.
23:38
You're going too far that way. It brings you back over.
23:40
And thank God. For it because we need it.
23:43
We need it. We can.
23:45
All fall prey. To that from time to time
23:47
because. The devil is subtle.
23:50
In what he does and how he does it.
23:52
But we're not ignorant. Of his devices.
23:54
Thank God this has been Living Waters of Grace, a ministry of
24:00
Pastor Lewis Harrell of Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
24:04
Today's message has been on the book of Titus.
24:07
This book is a master class in how Christians should live in
24:11
modern culture. Titus was ministering to the
24:14
people of Crete, an island off the coast of Greece, but he was
24:17
facing many challenges. The Cretans who came to know
24:21
Jesus seemed to assimilate Jesus into their existing culture
24:25
instead of allowing themselves to be transformed by the Holy
24:29
Spirit inside of them. Others were fully devoting
24:33
themselves to Jesus but shutting themselves off from the world
24:37
around them. The apostle Paul encourages
24:40
Titus to help his audience find a middle ground where they can
24:44
live in this world while still following a different way of
24:47
life in Jesus. If you would like to learn more
24:51
about what it means to faithfully follow the teachings
24:54
of Christ in a world full of darkness, we'd love to get
24:57
connected with you in person. If you are in Greensburg, PA,
25:02
