- 0:01Where you are right now is right on that threshold state, that liminal space.
- 0:06And this space itself is powerful and important.
- 0:09Can you trust that there is a specific magic to this threshold state,
- 0:14and allow things to unfold?
- 0:25Hello and welcome back to Remember Why You Are Here,
- 0:28a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax, receive,
- 0:33reconnect yourself, and remember the most important thing of all:
- 0:37why you're here. I'm Asia Suler,
- 0:40and in this episode today I wanted to revisit a video I
- 0:44posted at the beginning of 2024 called "Are You on A
- 0:49Threshold?" And it was something that I shared after years of really
- 0:54reckoning with what a threshold is,
- 0:56of coming out of a huge threshold moment in my life where I had become a
- 1:01parent and had had my daughter.
- 1:04And I'm feeling really called to share this recording now as I just moved out of
- 1:09the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene here in our mountains.
- 1:14A huge threshold moment for me in my life. You'll
- 1:18hear in this recording that I mentioned the flower essences on my website.
- 1:23And when I went back and listened to it, I thought to myself, oh,
- 1:26we can cut that part out. But then I decided, you know what?
- 1:29I'm going to leave it because it's a testament to this huge chapter of my life.
- 1:33If you're just tuning into the podcast for the first time.
- 1:36I had an apothecary called One Willow Apothecaries for 12 years,
- 1:42and that apothecary was destroyed in Hurricane Helene
- 1:46last year,
- 1:47and it was this really big moment in time.
- 1:51And I talk more about that moment,
- 1:54what we all learned here in the mountains through what one of my friends
- 1:59called a doorstep apocalypse - talk about being on the threshold
- 2:04- in an episode I just released in October.
- 2:06So if you're interested more in the earth-led learnings that
- 2:11came out of that experience, you can check that episode out.
- 2:15But it was this huge threshold moment for me of deciding,
- 2:18will I continue with this or will I let it go?
- 2:21And there's just something so powerful about being on that threshold
- 2:26and about knowing,
- 2:27about having this knowledge of what it looks like to be on a threshold,
- 2:31what to expect, and how to support yourself through that.
- 2:35And I look back now on this time last year,
- 2:39and I just really have so much compassion for myself and the enormity
- 2:44of the threshold that I was moving through at that time.
- 2:47I was really dedicating myself to fundraising,
- 2:51supporting my community,
- 2:52helping our town to recover. Our town was flooded with nine feet
- 2:57of water, so most of the buildings in town were destroyed,
- 3:02needed complete renovations, and-or didn't exist anymore.
- 3:07And so that was really the focus.
- 3:09It was like I was in the midst of this really big moment in time,
- 3:13and I think this is the thing about threshold moments is that
- 3:18when we're in it and we don't know how to name it,
- 3:20it can just feel so overwhelming and confusing. But when we know how to name it,
- 3:25when we know exactly what is happening, where we are,
- 3:29when we have that map,
- 3:31it's so much easier be with those times.
- 3:35It's so much easier to recognize where you are, embrace where you are,
- 3:39and know that a change is coming. So for me, last year,
- 3:44obviously a huge aspect of this change was releasing,
- 3:48letting go of this big part of my business and my life that the
- 3:53apothecary was,
- 3:55and I'm thinking about this even more so now as I really feel like in this
- 3:59larger sense we are on the threshold in this world of
- 4:04some really big stuff. We've kind of been on that threshold for a while,
- 4:09but I think this concept of the threshold is so helpful for us in our
- 4:14individual lives,
- 4:15but also as we step into the roles and the gifts that we are meant to bring to
- 4:20this world in this time where we are all collectively really standing on
- 4:25such a potent threshold. So with that,
- 4:28let's get into the recording and you can discover,
- 4:32are you on a threshold?
- 4:36There are times in your life when you feel you're on the brink of something
- 4:40totally new. You're not yet in this new phase, but you're not who you've been.
- 4:45You're changing, your life is changing,
- 4:49but you aren't quite sure yet what you're changing into or what's awaiting you
- 4:53on the other side. This is a threshold moment,
- 4:56and these moments are some of the most potent and powerful we'll ever experience
- 5:01in our life. This video is a guide to threshold moments,
- 5:05how to navigate these moments and how to embrace the distinct power
- 5:10that can only come about when we are on the brink of a threshold.
- 5:14So let's talk about the etymology of the word "threshold." "Thresh" is an
- 5:19old English word for beating out grain.
- 5:22So you would literally thresh grain from the stalk.
- 5:26A "hold" would be a sill that was created on the doorstop to actually
- 5:31protect the threshing floor. So in this way,
- 5:34a threshold was an actual piece of stone or wood that was placed
- 5:39between the room and the outside that had two functions,
- 5:43both to keep the dust and the debris from outside from entering into this room
- 5:48and also to keep the sanctum of this room intact. So if you were
- 5:52threshing wheat onto the floor,
- 5:55that wheat would have a soft and comfortable and clean place to land,
- 6:00and that threshold would keep your work inside of this room.
- 6:05So I love looking at the etymology of words because it helps us understand how
- 6:10these words are functioning in our life and what it really means to be on a
- 6:13threshold. So thresholds delineate two worlds.
- 6:18A threshold is neither here nor there.
- 6:21It is that space where the outside meets the inside and the inside
- 6:26meets the outside. So when we are in threshold moments of our life,
- 6:30we are neither here nor there.
- 6:32We are leaving one phase and entering another one.
- 6:37We often don't quite know what that next phase looks like.
- 6:40If you've ever crossed over the threshold from a bright sunny day into the
- 6:45interior of your house or vice versa,
- 6:47there's a moment where your eyes need a second to adjust,
- 6:50where you can't quite see what's ahead of you. These are threshold moments,
- 6:54moments where you are crossing over from one phase of your life into another,
- 6:58from one way of doing things into another.
- 7:00And it's often a time when your identity itself is in flux. Now,
- 7:05for thresholds, we can either be crossing in or crossing out,
- 7:10and both have their power and their potency.
- 7:13So I know that when I had a baby and I was postpartum,
- 7:16I was very much in a threshold moment.
- 7:19Yet the motion of this was not me stepping out into the world,
- 7:23it was actually me going within. When I look back on this time,
- 7:27it was a time where I was crossing over that threshold into the room,
- 7:31into the womb, into a time of my life where I was less public,
- 7:35less visible, where I was home a lot,
- 7:37where I was really doing a lot of deep inner work, staying at home with my baby,
- 7:42in those early days. So if you are on a threshold,
- 7:46you might be moving in one direction or another.
- 7:48Perhaps you are moving out into the world,
- 7:51you're ready to put yourself out there in a new and different way to meet new
- 7:54people, go on adventures. Maybe you're feeling that call.
- 7:58That would be stepping over the threshold and into the outer world.
- 8:02But you might also be hearing the call to go inward,
- 8:05for a time of contemplation, study, inward growth,
- 8:09introspection. This is you crossing the threshold to go in,
- 8:14and both are incredibly valuable because in both instances,
- 8:18where you are right now is right on that threshold state,
- 8:21that that liminal space.
- 8:23And this space itself is powerful and important. And a lot
- 8:27of folk traditions, thresholds were considered to be magical spaces,
- 8:32spaces where we would want to invoke protection and blessings,
- 8:36but also spaces where we can actually interact with some of the unseen elements
- 8:41of the world,
- 8:42spaces where spells could be enacted. There's a reason why there's
- 8:46still this tradition of carrying the bride over the threshold
- 8:51after a wedding. There is an initiation here,
- 8:55when we move through thresholds.
- 8:57And when we can connect to the threshold moments in our life,
- 9:01we can really embrace the power and magic that comes with liminality.
- 9:05Thresholds are important. They have a deep and distinct magic,
- 9:10and there's even this concept in a different way of using the word threshol,
- 9:14that they're a space where we have to linger.
- 9:17We have to actually spend time there in order to reach the fullness of our
- 9:21potential to step over into the other side. So in medicine,
- 9:25there's the concept of a threshold dose.
- 9:27There's a certain amount of that medicine that you have to take in order for it
- 9:31to start being effective. So in this way of thinking,
- 9:34thresholds aren't something we should rush over.
- 9:36It's something we should spend time with, linger there,
- 9:39be there. I know for example, when I was postpartum,
- 9:43a big threshold experience in my life,
- 9:46it wasn't going to work for me to try and rush through that to the other side to
- 9:49see who am I going to be as a mom, as a parent,
- 9:53as someone who now is in a completely different phase of my life.
- 9:57It wasn't going to work for me to just rush through that moment.
- 10:00I had to be there,
- 10:01fully and completely. So wherever you are in your life right now,
- 10:05maybe you're in a threshold moment.
- 10:07Can you get comfortable with being in-process,
- 10:11with being in that liminal state? Can you get comfortable with not knowing?
- 10:15Can you get comfortable with the fact that yes, you are neither here nor there.
- 10:20You don't know what's coming up next,
- 10:21but you know something is moving and shifting and changing,
- 10:24and can you just be with the process right now? Can you be in the unknown?
- 10:29Can you trust that there is a specific magic to this threshold state and
- 10:34allow things to unfold. If you would like a practice to help you
- 10:38increase your comfortability with this threshold moment and to invoke some of
- 10:43the magic of what's coming next in the potential of this threshold state,
- 10:47try taking care of your literal threshold to your house.
- 10:51So this could be the threshold to your front door, your back door,
- 10:55maybe the threshold to your bedroom, if that's where your sanctum is.
- 10:59Tending the threshold is a powerful magical practice for tending the
- 11:04threshold moments of our life,
- 11:06for tending these spaces where we are vulnerable, often sensitive,
- 11:11uncomfortable.
- 11:12Our thresholds are where we meet the world and it's where the world meets us. So
- 11:17this is a beautiful place to anoint. It's a beautiful place to clean.
- 11:21If you've never cleaned your threshold before,
- 11:24get out there with a bucket of water and some soap, a duster.
- 11:28Get out there and actually literally clean the threshold underneath your door.
- 11:32Clean the doorframe.
- 11:34It's amazing how much energy this can free up just literally cleaning the
- 11:39threshold to your house. Once you clean the threshold,
- 11:42bless the threshold in some kind of way.
- 11:44So I often like to bless the threshold of my home during the high holidays
- 11:49of the Wheel of the Year. So on the equinoxes and the solstice,
- 11:54I often will bring flowers and leave them on the threshold,
- 11:57sprinkle flower essences or water from the creek,
- 12:00ways to bless this space, to bring in fortune,
- 12:05to bring in energy, to bring in light,
- 12:08and to bring in protection as well. Here in the south,
- 12:12in the Hoodoo tradition from the African diaspora,
- 12:15there is a powerful practice of actually using red brick dust on the threshold.
- 12:19This practice of using red dust to bless, anoint,
- 12:23and protect is an ancient part of human culture.
- 12:27It goes back hundreds of thousands of years in the use of ochre.
- 12:30So if you have access to either red brick dust or ochre or some other red
- 12:35pigment,
- 12:35this might be a beautiful way to both anoint and protect your physical threshold
- 12:40as well as this threshold moment in your life. Other ways to anoint,
- 12:44bless and protect your threshold are salt. So any kind of salt works well here.
- 12:49Salt is purifying and protective. And water.
- 12:53Water is a universal blessing agent. I love using water from our creek here,
- 12:58but I'll also sometimes just take water from the faucet,
- 13:00perhaps leave some flowers in that water, put some flower essences in the water,
- 13:05and then splash it over the threshold as a part of my ritual cleaning and
- 13:08blessing. If you want to work with flower essences for your threshold,
- 13:13you can check out the flower essences on my website.
- 13:16I have a whole collection of flowers that I love to work with for invoking new
- 13:20eras, for bringing in magic, protection,
- 13:23and support. So wherever you are in your threshold moment,
- 13:27hang in there. You're here for a reason.
- 13:30There is a really potent new era waiting for you.
- 13:34There is wider vistas of who you are, why you're here,
- 13:39and what's possible, that are waiting to unfold for you.
- 13:42All you need to do right now is get comfortable with being on that threshold.
- 13:46Embrace the fact that you're on a threshold. Know that it's temporary.
- 13:50You're only going to be here for a short moment in your life.
- 13:53So any way that you can, enjoy it,
- 13:56enjoy being in this in-between,
- 13:59and enjoy all the magic that can arise out of the state of becoming.
- 14:05After re-listening to this,
- 14:07I decided for myself I really need to clean the threshold of my house.
- 14:13It really is so refreshing.
- 14:15I love that I named that practice here.
- 14:18I love that I reminded myself to do this practice. Currently,
- 14:23there's a whole bunch of chalk on the threshold of my door.
- 14:27My daughter has really liked from time to time getting chalk and chalking
- 14:31outside the door. And I remember one of the first times she did it,
- 14:36when she was quite young, she was probably only a year and a half,
- 14:39she drew these symbols on the door that really,
- 14:44they look like something out of the paleolithic caves of Southern
- 14:48France,
- 14:49like these pictographs that come straight out of the
- 14:54human imagination.
- 14:55It was so beautiful and cool to see her just intuitively start
- 14:59to make these drawings.
- 15:02And it felt very much like she also was intuiting
- 15:05this sacred space of the threshold. Blessing this threshold,
- 15:09chalking right outside on the door on the threshold,
- 15:13and I left those chalkings up for a long time.
- 15:15Now the chalk looks a little different,
- 15:18but it still feels like such a blessing in that space. So if you embark
- 15:23upon this ritual, I'd love to hear about how it goes for you,
- 15:27how you decided to anoint the threshold,
- 15:30hopefully this recording was helpful for you.
- 15:32And just orienting yourself to where you are in your life,
- 15:37what it means to be on the threshold,
- 15:38and how to simply be with yourself in this moment.
- 15:41How to embrace the medicine that is inherent to this moment. As
- 15:46always, you can leave a comment if you're on a platform where you can do that
- 15:51or you can head on over to my website,
- 15:53AsiaSuler.com/remember and leave me a voice note.
- 15:58It's been so sweet to get tidings from you all as we move through this
- 16:03huge threshold time on this planet. And I just want to say a big thank you to
- 16:08everyone who has left a rating or review this past fall.
- 16:13If you're not aware, if you're just tuning in, I'm currently on a sabbatical.
- 16:16I am taking five months off to work on my next book.
- 16:20It has been such a huge decision for me,
- 16:24such a huge experience.
- 16:26It felt very much like I created a threshold for myself,
- 16:30demarcating one era of my life from another,
- 16:32and your ratings and reviews just really help this podcast so much.
- 16:37This is the only place that I am publicly continuing to show up right now
- 16:41as I do this deep work on the book.
- 16:43And your support here has really buoyed me.
- 16:47It has helped me so deeply,
- 16:50and I'm just so grateful for you and all the ways in which you
- 16:55have helped me to make this big threshold moment of change
- 16:59and opening and creation possible for myself. So thank you so much for
- 17:04listening.
- 17:05Thank you for all the ways in which you've been willing to move through
- 17:09thresholds in your life, all of the thresholds you've been on in your life,
- 17:13because I know you've been on many.
- 17:16And as you move across or move through this
- 17:20threshold time in your life and this threshold time on the planet,
- 17:24may it help you remember that most important thing of all:
- 17:29why you're here.
