- 2:04while. So I hope you guys are.
- 2:10Ready for that. It's we're gonna be talking
- 2:13about tear a little bit. I've done, you know, some videos
- 2:19or I did, I did a deity discussion video some years ago
- 2:22about tear and It's been a while since I've had any Focus or or
- 2:30put any real you know strict focus on any one or more of the
- 2:36of the various gods and goddesses of our Pantheon.
- 2:43But yeah, today's today's episode.
- 2:44So I got this message on on the midgard musings Facebook page
- 2:50which is a great way to, you know, get in touch with me if

- 4:15what we're based in today's, you know, podcast about.
- 4:18So thank you to all of my, you know, subscribers listeners
- 4:23followers. I do members.
- 4:25Patrons supporters everywhere, thank you for helping keep this
- 4:30podcast going. Thank you for your ongoing
- 4:33support. Thank you for you know whether
- 4:36you realize it or not being the inspiration behind all of this
- 4:40you know and being a motivator behind all of this it's good to
- 4:46know that you know you have people that you're back that
- 4:50that want to support what you do.
- 4:52So the the Message that I got today.
- 4:59It was kind of neat. I'm going to I'm going to show
- 5:00you all just what he said. This is this gentleman's name.
- 5:04He's going to go by. We're just going to call him sky
- 5:08and he sent this message that says He works in, you know,
- 5:15because he said, hey, do you have time to chat?
- 5:16And I said, well, I'm kind of, you know, busy, but I'll respond
- 5:18when I can. He says, I completely
- 5:20understand, I work in the medical field and time is always
- 5:24short. I came across your YouTube
- 5:26channel. When I was researching for ways
- 5:31to honor tear, I would say, I'm new to Heathen to being Heathen
- 5:36in the ideas and symbols that always appeared around me.
- 5:44They aren't there aren't many Heathen practices around me.
- 5:47The ones I know either use it as a power trip or throw in some
- 5:54sort of white supremacy. So needless to say I'm on my
- 5:58own, you know, and that's always, you know, tough to hear
- 6:04when people find themselves in, you know, an area geographical
- 6:11area, where they I feel like they're on their own.
- 6:17Or that they don't have anybody around to support and so they
- 6:20look to the online community. And even with that, you know, as
- 6:24volatile as local in person, groups can be based off of the
- 6:30things like Sky, just mentioned the online community.
- 6:36Communities can be even more. So because You can hide behind a
- 6:42facade, you can hide behind, you know, a fake.
- 6:48Meow Persona and a fake image in a fake and just untruth, you
- 6:55know? So you always run that risk as
- 6:56well. So you know, the fact that sky
- 6:59that you found my channel and in your research, I'm glad and be
- 7:03careful, you know, out there some other channels that I would
- 7:07recommend are going to be posted down in this, the description in
- 7:11the show notes, you know, so for anyone else who's coming across
- 7:14my podcast, or my videos in there?
- 7:17Kind of new to Heathen re I'm going to share some other
- 7:21content creators that I think are definitely, you know, worth
- 7:26your time in your research and you know channels that are
- 7:33wholesome that share their own views on things without taking a
- 7:40bigoted or hate it or hate-filled approach.
- 7:43Right? So you know with what's called I
- 7:47was talking about you looking for ways to honor tear.
- 7:52Some of what I had sent back to him, you know, he was asking
- 7:54also about some suggested reading because his Origins.
- 7:59His religious Origins started in Christianity, like, kind of like
- 8:04a lot of us have, you know, we moved away from monotheism and
- 8:09polytheism and we found our home as it were Comfort within
- 8:15Germanic heathen. three northern European Heathen re just
- 8:20paganism as a as a generalized term and So he was asking also,
- 8:28you know, for like suggested reading and all that and I gave
- 8:31him a very comprehensive list of things I'm and I said, you know,
- 8:34look by no means am I saying that, you know, read these books
- 8:38like you would read the Bible like religiously and all that
- 8:41kind of stuff, right every day. You know, make sure that you can
- 8:43remember every single, you know, verse of the Hall of a mall or
- 8:48anything like that. And I told him, I said, you
- 8:49know, if you don't read any of these or if you only read some
- 8:52of them or you can't find him, it's not like This is me saying
- 8:57or anyone saying that, you know, you're not a true Heathen.
- 8:58If you don't read any of these things, nothing like that but a
- 9:04lot of the reading material that I shared with him included,
- 9:09really good source, material, primary and secondary sources,
- 9:14right? You know, so there were some
- 9:16things like, you know, tacitus Germania culture of the Teutons
- 9:23and a lot of, you know, more modern, but Scott, Early work
- 9:26that helps helps. You really understand?
- 9:31What things were probably like, or could have been like in
- 9:35ancient times, you know, the the pre-christian times of Northern
- 9:39Europe and even Scandinavia and some of the other surrounding
- 9:42Mainland, Germanic lands and countries and whatnot back then.
- 9:47So, you know, the hope is to provide you with good source
- 9:51material to develop your own way of thinking about it and
- 9:55determine if this is, you know, how do you want to take this
- 9:58approach? You know, because when whenever
- 10:00I get people that, Either write in or call in or ask me in
- 10:03person or whatever about, you know, what can I do?
- 10:08To honor this God or that God or what can I do to you know, gift
- 10:14to this God, how should I give to them?
- 10:17You know and all this kind of stuff I always am careful to
- 10:23make sure that they know like even though right there is
- 10:30homework to be done in there is knowledge to be gained in there
- 10:32is with as with any religion really you know studying to be
- 10:37done. There's really no one.
- 10:43In position in a position, like there is in many monotheistic,
- 10:48religious beliefs, like, Christianity, and Judaism, and,
- 10:52and even Islam, where there's, there's no, like Central
- 10:54Authority or whatever that says, you know, you have to do this,
- 10:57or you suffer the consequences. You know, the the, the
- 11:02consequence that we pay for, for our misdeeds or whatever is is
- 11:07experienced in quite often in real time because you make a bad
- 11:10decision and you reap bad rewards, you know?
- 11:13we make a good decision and you reap good reward and there's
- 11:18also this extension of though that reward or the consequence
- 11:23of our actions that extend past our mortal life and and and and
- 11:29I think you know, touch upon, you know, luck and or log and
- 11:35adding to the weld, you know, adding to those Primal layers
- 11:40for our ancestors to draw from just as we are drawing from the
- 11:45In the well that that our ancestors laid down before them
- 11:48and before us, that we, then become the ancestors and what we
- 11:52do now affects the later the later on.
- 11:56So you know what I mean, like what we do in the third on the
- 11:58shapes the school. So there's all of that to it.
- 12:03It's kind of part of this world view that a lot of pagans and he
- 12:11didn't specifically Approaching and adopting their way of
- 12:15thinking. So when I get to, you know, the
- 12:18point of when someone says, you know, what can I do to honor
- 12:20this God or that God, or what can I do, or how should I do
- 12:23this or you know all that I think it comes to a point of
- 12:28you've got to figure a lot of that out for yourself and what
- 12:31fits and what works for you. But there's things that there's
- 12:33I think there's some fundamentals and some Basics
- 12:36that you should know because you can Write a ritual, you can do
- 12:41the thing. You can.
- 12:43You know, sanctify, your Sacred Space by whatever.
- 12:47Means whether it be through, you know, fire or through smoke or
- 12:54through whatever other means that you externally.
- 12:59Set Sacred Space and then you, you know, go through the motions
- 13:04to perform your ritual like you can anybody can get to that
- 13:07point but but what you should really get to is why are you
- 13:13doing it? Because again there's nobody
- 13:14that standing above you or around you or whatever.
- 13:18Going nope you did it wrong. That's not going to work.
- 13:20You you violated this commandment you didn't do it
- 13:23that way and so therefore you got to do you know This thing
- 13:27that of the other to correct the wrong way that you did this
- 13:30prayer or you did this ritual and so on so forth there's
- 13:34really there's nothing like that and you know and at least in
- 13:38this branch of of of polytheism. So why are you looking to Focus
- 13:50on one or more specific guys. Like why do you want to know
- 13:54more about venerating? Tear specifically today's
- 13:57podcast is going to be about tear, you know, like what is the
- 14:02purpose? Why there's, and you'll hear
- 14:04this a lot when you get into conversations with other pagans,
- 14:10you know, this whole overarching concept of intent and I've even
- 14:16done a podcast about intent versus purpose.
- 14:19You know what? Intend to do what our intent is.
- 14:22Is not the same as the purpose behind it.
- 14:26I'll link that in the show notes, and in the annotated
- 14:29cards for those that are watching on YouTube, go to the
- 14:32annotated cards and and checked out, or check it out down in the
- 14:35description and show notes /, show notes wherever it's at for
- 14:39those that are listening. It's a, it's a podcast that I
- 14:42did on intent versus Purpose with jme Olufsen.
- 14:46Another fellow Heathen a great guy, wonderful.
- 14:49Real craftsmanship, dear friend and brother of mine for those
- 14:56that are new to the channel and new to my podcast.
- 14:58I don't I don't bestow titles of kinship on just anybody and
- 15:03everybody because your Pagan there there's a special place in
- 15:07my heart for people that earn kinship titles and it is
- 15:13definitely something you earn But Sonia going back to it.
- 15:17All right, why do we do what we do?
- 15:21What is the purpose behind what we do and in most cases, why do
- 15:27we If you even spend time thinking about venerating the
- 15:31gods, right? And in most cases, I think, for
- 15:35a lot of us especially when we're new to Heathen re or
- 15:40paganism is and, and very, especially if you're coming into
- 15:44this from like say Christianity or any other monotheistic,
- 15:51ridden with Dogma. Religion, you're coming into
- 15:57Heathen re with that worldview. You are thinking I need to
- 16:01Respect and honor and pray to and worship and all this the
- 16:06gods because that's replacing the sacred deity, that I'm
- 16:12leaving. So, there's a gap that you're
- 16:14trying to fill, there's a hole that you're trying to fill a
- 16:17void that you're trying to fill in the gods because of them
- 16:21being gods because of them being sacred.
- 16:23Beings are the thing that you think of at first you know and
- 16:29that's what you want to focus your attention on because that's
- 16:31You think a good Pagan does, right?
- 16:33Just like you think a good Christian goes to church and
- 16:35praise and you know, tithes their money and whatnot.
- 16:39Whatever other rules that the Bible tells you should do to be
- 16:44a good Christian and all this. You come into Heathen recommend
- 16:49to paganism with a very similar mindset, even though it's like,
- 16:54well, it's polytheism and I'm not, you know, just praying to
- 16:56one. God, I'm praying to multiple
- 16:57gods or I'm not just worshipping one.
- 16:59I'm worshipping many. So there's this baggage that a
- 17:03lot of Us carry from our old, you know, religious beliefs, and
- 17:08in coming into and even older religious belief into paganism,
- 17:12so there's that. And so but why, why do we do
- 17:16that? There's there's that there's the
- 17:18reason to fill the fill that hole or fill that void with
- 17:23something that we used to do. And then we became very familiar
- 17:25with but it's important to understand the Again, the
- 17:31purpose of why our ancient ancestors believed way, they
- 17:35believe in live the way they did.
- 17:36It was a, it was a very much different world view their
- 17:39approach to the gods was, and I know, I'm not going to say that
- 17:45this is exactly the way it was, because we're learning new
- 17:48things all the time. You know, where we're figuring
- 17:50things out with a lot of times where we're speculating, even
- 17:53even the, the most elite Scholars.
- 17:57And you know, people of of renowned who have spent Their
- 18:00whole lives studying this sort of thing and trying to figure
- 18:04out these things are still learning new things and coming
- 18:07up new ways. But for the most part, we
- 18:09understand that, you know, that the relationship that the
- 18:12ancient heathens are Arch Ethan's.
- 18:14If you will the indigenous people of these lands away that
- 18:18they had a relationship with the sacred was not the same as you
- 18:25would think of. Now, in modern days is the way
- 18:27we approach. Let's say, God right going to
- 18:30church. Saying prayers.
- 18:32Yes, there's some similarities in that we approach the sacred.
- 18:35We approach Our God's with a do level of veterans and respect.
- 18:43You know, it's why so many of us will dedicate a space, an altar.
- 18:51If it's outdoors, maybe like a Holger, or have a, some sort of
- 18:55grow, some sort of set, aside place of sanctity, a sacred
- 19:00place. Place for us to approach the
- 19:02gods. It's, it allows us to separate,
- 19:06you know, instead of walking into a church.
- 19:08And knowing that now, I'm in God's house right now, you're
- 19:10walking into the corner of your office or the or the, you know,
- 19:16mantelpiece of your, your fireplace or a closet.
- 19:19Maybe if you're like an apartment and you have limited
- 19:21space, whatever, you know, or it's a bit, it's a literal
- 19:25Grove. It's a circle of trees, a circle
- 19:27of stones, wherever it's that separation.
- 19:32That that physical representation of I'm leaving
- 19:35the outside world and I'm coming into or approaching the gods.
- 19:40I'm approaching Divine beings. I'm approaching the sacred.
- 19:46So, Wait the way that our ancient ancestors and way these
- 19:51ancient peoples did. It was was for very specific
- 19:54reasons and at very specific times at least so much as we
- 19:57know of, that's documented, right?
- 19:59We know for a fact that there was very specific bloats that
- 20:06were held in northern Europe, the Scandinavian countries and
- 20:09even in Mainland Germania the like the Saxons and the
- 20:13frisians. And and some of these other
- 20:15Mainland Germanic people that can that came Mother tribes over
- 20:20time. They had dedicated.
- 20:23Holy days or holy Tides every year and it was documented that
- 20:29they would sacrifice to the gods very and in very specific
- 20:34manners, they would they would hold bloat, they would sacrifice
- 20:37blood. It was part of that, sacred
- 20:41ritual to the gods for specific things.
- 20:44You know you had Segura bloat that is in the northern
- 20:51beginning of Summer, that was a victory bloat to Odin to gift to
- 21:01him and to the gods for victory. And the upcoming, you know,
- 21:06times where war was waged War battle was when we would go on
- 21:09raids and then all this kind of stuff and there was Victory
- 21:12bloat which is which Seeger both is.
- 21:14You had the the Nights bloat the you know around the decent,
- 21:20bloke down the mother nights traditional I believe it was a
- 21:24Saxon very Saxon leaning. Blowed, I'm not big on the
- 21:31history with with Saxon, he then resew don't necessarily quote me
- 21:34on that, but there's some really tremendously good sources on
- 21:37that to out there which I'll try to share in the The annotated
- 21:41cards but also do.com, Robert sauce.
- 21:43I've had him on my podcast before and he's done a lot of
- 21:47really neat work. And learned a lot, his work has
- 21:50been featured on his blog article now for some years and
- 21:54he's been doing this for quite some time.
- 21:57Yeah, I know some of you listening or what we're
- 21:58watching, whatever going to be like, oh, you know, you got
- 22:01something to say about him. I don't personally have a bad
- 22:03thing to say about the guy and I'm not going to do that here.
- 22:06But anyway, getting off topic, you know, winter nights was that
- 22:13the time of year to give to the gods and in, in bloat and
- 22:19sacrifice to the gods for, you know, a for a good impression
- 22:30for the cold, right? In preparation for the winter to
- 22:32sacrifice and thanks for the good Year's Harvest.
- 22:36Because again, if you didn't have a good harvest, you didn't
- 22:39have enough food to last you through the winter.
- 22:41So you could potentially starve, you know?
- 22:45And then you had you'll and you will was the midwinter Festival.
- 22:50That the midwinter bloat that you would, they would have to,
- 22:57you know, sacrifice to the gods, and thanks for making it through
- 23:01the harshest times of the year and two in anticipation and
- 23:05hope. So, Of having a profitable and a
- 23:09bountiful season of farming and all this kind of stuff and need
- 23:15to get ready for all of that again.
- 23:16So, you got to think like the purpose, the why, why we're
- 23:21things done was it? Because they felt like, well,
- 23:24it's that day of the week again and I got a, you know,
- 23:27quote-unquote go to church. I gotta, you know, pay my ties.
- 23:30I got a, I woke up and I gotta pray to the gods to protect me
- 23:34or was it? It was It was a way for them to
- 23:38connect with things that were definitely.
- 23:39They failed were bigger than them, whether it was the
- 23:41elements and the forces of nature around them which they
- 23:46kind of turned into, you know, or how they shape.
- 23:51The, the forces, the storms, the, the winters, the all this
- 23:56kind of stuff, of forces of nature, how they became sacred
- 23:59and became the gods. Eventually, you know how?
- 24:05How their connection with the world around them turned into
- 24:09their religion? You know, it was more of that,
- 24:14than it was out of just necessity out of just thinking,
- 24:16well, I've got to go, pray to tear.
- 24:18Now, I've got to go pray to Odin now, because It's that time of
- 24:23day or, you know, it's that time of night or whatever.
- 24:25So, I'm going around around the ways a bit, but the bottom line
- 24:31is, you know, when I think of why, or what should I do to
- 24:38sacrifice to the God, how should I sacrifice the to your, how
- 24:40should I gift it to your? What can I do to honor to hear
- 24:43to worship to your? What should I do?
- 24:46Well, figure out why you want to do it to begin with, you know,
- 24:49have you experienced things in your life, your own Personal
- 24:56experiences, your unverified personal gnosis has UPG.
- 25:01It's like I told this to Sky I said, you know, there's so much
- 25:05of learning about heathen re is the Academia, you know, studying
- 25:10learning about Source materials and how this this this religion
- 25:15could have possibly been observed in practice in ancient
- 25:18times, but don't neglect and don't shun away from your
- 25:23personal experiences because you're going to have them.
- 25:25And so much of your religion is going to be based off of your
- 25:29personal experiences, right? This gets into some other stuff
- 25:34that is is my own UPG as long as you're recognizing it for what
- 25:40it is and not trying to pass it off.
- 25:41As fact, you know, not trying to pass it off as well.
- 25:45This is the way the ancient heathens did it.
- 25:47And the end this is the way I'm going to do it.
- 25:49If you don't have any Source material to back that up then
- 25:53just say so right. Hey guys, this is my you too.
- 25:55UB G, but this is what I do and who knows if that if that won't
- 26:00help you know growth and development of other people?
- 26:03So I don't done, you know, in ways that I've approached my
- 26:07Heathen re is not to be, you know, not to gate, keep too
- 26:13much. You know, I do what I do and I
- 26:15keep certain things private and I keep certain things pertaining
- 26:19to My Tribe tribal and closed off in that way.
- 26:24But we're also not, you know, closed off.
- 26:28We're not a, this is not a closed-off religion.
- 26:30This is not something that we are not welcoming other people
- 26:32to come in and learn our way of doing things, and be a part of
- 26:35our way of doing things because you know, everybody's looking
- 26:39for something. Be a part of everybody's looking
- 26:41for those groups that they want to click up with and feel like
- 26:46they're part of a family in a way.
- 26:48So you know the neat thing with Sky was him feeling as the he
- 26:53was isolated and alone, he gave me his you know, city and state
- 26:56of location and I was like huh you know what you're probably
- 26:59not as alone as you think you are.
- 27:00And I actually know a community not too far from you of really
- 27:04decent and good people that I'm going to give you some
- 27:07information on and as it turns out, One of the people that
- 27:12admins that Facebook group has also it was a long time old
- 27:16friend of Sky, you know, they hadn't talked in very long or
- 27:20something like that and they they really got reconnected
- 27:24through that interaction through mine and his interaction.
- 27:27He's like, thank you so much for this being and, you know, so
- 27:29there you go. Like you've got This whole
- 27:33social media thing, you know, the online communities and how
- 27:35like I mentioned earlier on the podcast and how volatile it can
- 27:38be. It can also be very wholesome
- 27:42and it is in many, many ways in ways like this, you know, so I
- 27:51told sky or I asked him. I said, you know, if you don't
- 27:53mind because he was asking that question, what can I do to honor
- 27:55to hear? What can I do to worship here?
- 27:58So if you don't mind, I'd like to make this the the topic of
- 28:01this week's podcast because I think it's a great thing to talk
- 28:05about not just because of tear, you know.
- 28:07And I did say that this podcast was going to be about tier but
- 28:10it's really more. I think about our individual
- 28:15feelings are individual approaches to Dealing with the
- 28:20gods interacting with the gods. You know when I when I came into
- 28:25Heathen re very early on I was I was super hardcore driven into
- 28:30you know, I've got to have my altar set up.
- 28:32I've got to have a representation of the Gods on my
- 28:34altar. I've got to have an idol.
- 28:35I've got to have a or, you know, God polar whatever you want to
- 28:38call. That I've got to have my, you
- 28:40know, I got to have this, I got to have that.
- 28:44And I've got to learn how to bloat. you know, got to know
- 28:51the, the right way of doing it but I was, you know, I was
- 28:56nothing wrong with that, you know, nothing wrong with, you
- 28:59know, and there's there's a lot of people out online that'll,
- 29:02you know, write their own little devotionals prayers, whatever
- 29:06you want to call them to different gods and their
- 29:09beautiful, actually, I love looking online and seeing what
- 29:13people are writing, whether it's on a Blog article or on a social
- 29:17media post, like, I love seeing And the creativity.
- 29:22Excuse me. I love seeing the creativity.
- 29:27That gets displayed. And shared with people when
- 29:33they're wanting to. Honor the Gods in that way.
- 29:44And I would be lying if I said that some of what I've read.
- 29:49Was not inspiration for me to do my own work than that way, you
- 29:53know? So yeah, I've I've used the
- 29:57internet. I've, I've looked at up things
- 29:59and are they ancient in their character?
- 30:02Are they are they very old writings?
- 30:04Absolutely. Not, you know, could they be
- 30:08inspired from older bades or older prayers or older wordings
- 30:13of things? Possibly but more than likely
- 30:16it's just one person's, you know, feeling inspired.
- 30:19Our to verbalize and right, we're right.
- 30:22Whatever in a about a certain thing in certain way, but it is,
- 30:26it's very interesting. Very inspiring to me to see that
- 30:29because that shows a lot of us in the moment, right?
- 30:35That you're willing to kind of do what we do here on the, on
- 30:39the, on podcast and on other channels.
- 30:41And some of these other content creators other Heathen content
- 30:43creators that are out here. You know, doing research,
- 30:47finding things out and then here you guys go here's where you can
- 30:51find it. Here's where you can learn for
- 30:53yourselves and that's been what I feel has been such a important
- 30:57part of the the online heat and community's growth and
- 31:01development. It's not so much like yeah
- 31:03anybody could sit here and be like I mean so I could have I
- 31:07could have taken this a different angle for Sky.
- 31:08I could have been like You mean you want to worshipped here?
- 31:14Go and read articles about to your go find, you know, you
- 31:20know, go read tacitus in and see the connections between tier and
- 31:27the Roman God of War Mars and see why, you know, there was a
- 31:31similarities, the similarities across cultures and all that
- 31:35kind of stuff or figure it out for yourself, buddy, do you
- 31:37know, do your own research, you know, who am I to tell you how
- 31:40to worship the gods? I'm nobody, you know, and I'm
- 31:42not going to sit here and try to To tell you any of that there's
- 31:46been people like that in this probably still even though our
- 31:48people like that, plenty of people like that that are that
- 31:51are so callous or so just jerks about information you know, go
- 31:57figure out for yourself and I'm not saying that there's not a
- 31:59place for that, but it's how its own the delivery, you know, it's
- 32:02kind of like me today with him. I said you know, I could have
- 32:06sat there and then written a big long paragraph and that would
- 32:09have been the end of it. But what does that really do
- 32:11for? What does that do for Sky?
- 32:12He right? Oh, it's Person's opinion.
- 32:15I was doing some research. I found you on YouTube and I had
- 32:18a question for you. Okay.
- 32:21Well here's some more information that you can
- 32:23research and find about this whole path because it's not just
- 32:26about tier It's not just about Odin, it's not just about Thor.
- 32:30It's not just about three or four are, you know, it's not
- 32:36just about yoked ins and it's not just about trolls and it's
- 32:39not just about the sagas and it's not just about the stories
- 32:42in the myths and the lore, right?
- 32:45That's all fascinating and it's all great and it all helps, you
- 32:50know, really paint the the the cosmology parts of things or the
- 32:55or the methos of things. But ultimately like, this is a
- 32:58religion and a religion, Kerry has worldviews You know coming
- 33:04into Heathen re coming into any religion.
- 33:06You know you are are changing from one world view into another
- 33:10and you will not absolutely not learn your this worldview.
- 33:17You will not reach reprogram yourself to think this way
- 33:21overnight, or even when in a few months, or a few years, you
- 33:24know, I've been doing this now, I've been Heathen now for About
- 33:31six or seven years. that I would that I could comfortably say
- 33:36I've Yeah, I'd say about seven, probably seven or eight years
- 33:41now. It doesn't even seem that long.
- 33:44I'm just because I'm thinking back on, like, when I met my
- 33:46wife and, you know, we've been together now for just, you know,
- 33:51six over six years or approaching six years and I was
- 33:57Pagan, you know, even before I met her just never, really,
- 34:02quite jumped into it as heavily. So anyway, you know, seven,
- 34:07seven, eight years, whatever and I'm still, you know, finding
- 34:11myself at times, you know, realizing There's there's
- 34:15there's some little bit of that old Christian baggage that pops
- 34:19up for pokes through so give it time and it's because it's going
- 34:25to take time. But learn about the World Views
- 34:31learn about the the host of the historical information.
- 34:35The Source material that we that we have.
- 34:38That's, you know, been worked on by a lot of people for many,
- 34:42many years to try and Fill in gaps right now.
- 34:48You know one could say well that's that's too much work for
- 34:51me. That's not what I'm that's not
- 34:52what I'm in this for. That's not what I'm trying to
- 34:54do. Okay, that's fine, that's what
- 34:56you're not about. You know, I am about, maybe not
- 35:01100% full hardcore Reconstructionist, but I am
- 35:05definitely about learning as much as I can about the ways
- 35:10that this religion may have been practiced in ancient times.
- 35:14And Figuring out how it fits and how it applies in Modern Times
- 35:17And recreating that. Because if it worked, then for
- 35:21our ancient ancestors. Yes, I mean, the gods are old
- 35:24and the gods have been, you know, known for centuries, if
- 35:29not millennia. But we're also modern heathens
- 35:33and we are in modern times and who, you know, who are we to say
- 35:36that? The gods are not equally as
- 35:38advanced and whatever. I mean, they're sacred beings
- 35:41for goodness sake. You know what I mean?
- 35:43The the way that mankind and Humanity has evolved over the
- 35:48years to think that the gods have, any are not even greater
- 35:54than that. In terms of their advancements.
- 35:56You know how the gods once connected with people how to
- 36:01They connect with people now while we've got social media,
- 36:05right? And I'm not saying that I'm not
- 36:08saying that, you know, because of social media because of this
- 36:10internet because of this networking that we have the
- 36:13capabilities of tapping into that you know it replaces the
- 36:17Grassroots level stuff, the boots on the ground you know
- 36:20nothing like this virtual happening right now is going to
- 36:25replace being in nature. Having your feet in the ground,
- 36:31your hands. Touch the Earth, your lungs,
- 36:34breathe in the fresh air. The the sounds of nature around
- 36:38you. The feelings of the wind, the
- 36:40water that, you know, you will never find that online.
- 36:45You'll never experience that online.
- 36:49That is where the gods dwell. Now or you know that's where I
- 36:53feel like the gods are the gods are around us in and they speak
- 36:56to us through nature and we connect to them in ways because
- 37:01of nature. Do they exist on another plane?
- 37:05Do they do they literally figuratively whatever exist on
- 37:09another plane. Sure.
- 37:10Because they're there, the gods. You know what I mean?
- 37:13They may not be omnipotent. That may not be omnipresent but
- 37:17they do have a place that they exist.
- 37:20That is beyond this. Profane space.
- 37:25But how we can connect with them in this profane spaces is by
- 37:30being out side by being out in nature and as closely as we can
- 37:34come to experiencing that, recreating that I think we're
- 37:38closer to experiencing the gods and that way.
- 37:43Now those this, you know, to everything that I say, I hear
- 37:46my, I hear some people saying, well, what about this?
- 37:48You know what about the fact that I live in the city, you
- 37:50know? Or are you know, my apartment
- 37:52complex is literally, you know, a four square mile cement block.
- 37:57And there's there's, you know, no nature around me for, you
- 38:00know, 20 miles or whatever, like, find a way.
- 38:03Like, I don't know if you want it bad enough, you'll you make
- 38:06it happen, you know. But And and there's another guy
- 38:13on here like Eric serve, and he does a lot of really good
- 38:16content about stuff like this. You know, about the facing the
- 38:19challenges of being. He just did a recent video about
- 38:23being, you know, an urban Heath and I think they call it, you
- 38:25know, being so, so, stuck into the inner cities, you know, or
- 38:31being in such a urbanized area where your connection to Nature
- 38:37is displaced a bit, and What ways you can, what things you
- 38:43can do to reconnect. So for folks like that they're
- 38:46listening right now and watching and going.
- 38:48But dude you know I'm I'm in the city you know?
- 38:50And you know I can't yeah sure there's a park nearby but you
- 38:54know there's there's people everywhere and there's this and
- 38:56there's a check out Eric's Channel.
- 38:57He's going to be one of the ones that I have talked about on this
- 39:00podcast many times before he's been featured on the channel.
- 39:03He's a great guy. If talked to him many times, I
- 39:06feel like we're friends, you know, on a Beyond just Being
- 39:12content creators, like we've talked on the phone and I have
- 39:14his number, and he has mine that sort of thing.
- 39:17And so check his channel out and check out some of his videos
- 39:20about stuff like this, because this is modern Heathen reman.
- 39:23Like we are living in the 21st century.
- 39:26It's 20, 22, and, you know, you got to adapt, you got to figure
- 39:30out ways and that's the cool thing about it, like, that's
- 39:32Heathen approach on things is, you know, adapting and being
- 39:37Innovative and figuring things out and making things work.
- 39:40It's not so So much of being stuck in the Dark Ages, you
- 39:44know, and being so disconnected and off the grid with the modern
- 39:48world. I mean, hey, that's what you
- 39:49want to do. You want to go off grid and you
- 39:51know, do that then. Sure by all means.
- 39:55But I don't think those people are sitting here.
- 39:56Listening to me talk about stuff like this, if they're off the
- 40:00grid, but yeah. So do all the things that I
- 40:07talked about, right, all the ways that I, this is my heat
- 40:09Andre. This is the way that I he and
- 40:11then In the way that I've come to Heathen is not the same way
- 40:14that I heathen. Three, four, five, six, seven
- 40:18years ago or even last year. It may be closer now than it
- 40:23was, you know, year ago or whatever.
- 40:24But even then like there's there's slight modifications
- 40:27there, slight changes, my view of the world itself, not just a
- 40:31religious worldview, but my view of the literal World itself in
- 40:36my place in it has changed super drastically just within the last
- 40:41four months, right? So there's going to be things
- 40:44like that. That have a huge Impact on what
- 40:47I say and why I say it. Because it's been based off of
- 40:54my experience, my actual experience, my living
- 40:59experience, the things that I touch feel taste.
- 41:01See and smell. You know, and so that's Heathen.
- 41:08Ritu to me, like, that's part of heating.
- 41:10You've got to feel it yourself, you got to experience it
- 41:13yourself. You've got to know what it feels
- 41:16like to stand with other like-minded people.
- 41:22Whether it's in a room, Around a table in a tent around a tree
- 41:28around a fire near the creek bed of a river in a park, whatever,
- 41:36you've got to know what it feels like the stand amongst
- 41:38like-minded. People people who have the same
- 41:41goals and your mind, and and just talk with them and
- 41:45especially when you get into religious rituals and things
- 41:49that tie you all together with the Gods.
- 41:54You cannot replicate that online.
- 41:58You can't I don't care how many Discord servers you guys get on.
- 42:03I don't care how many online Facebook live streams you join.
- 42:10I don't care what it feels like for you.
- 42:11In that moment as profound and as and as wonderful as it may
- 42:15feel, it's nothing like being there in person.
- 42:18I can guarantee you that you will not have the same
- 42:21experience as you as if it would be in person. so, Have those
- 42:30experiences, right? How can I honor tear?
- 42:36How can you honor any of the Gods?
- 42:38How do you worship any of the Gods?
- 42:39You know, tear was a focal point for Sky.
- 42:44He focuses in, on tier, for what reasons, is it?
- 42:47Because of the, the self-sacrifice elements that we
- 42:51read about in the lore, is it? Because of the, the connotations
- 42:54of that he has with Justice and right action, is it because he
- 42:58is Lord of all of the thing and presides over the thing and that
- 43:02Justice is is Right regardless and that Just constant balance,
- 43:07you know, needing to be sought with within the construct of
- 43:12what Justice is. You know, I mean, I myself
- 43:17always have have a tea wise Rune on, you know, I've had this
- 43:23this, this tier pendant. This to was ruin on my neck for,
- 43:28for, for, for a very long time for probably about the last five
- 43:32or so years of me being pagan. This is actually a pendant, that
- 43:37never comes off my neck. Thor's hammer does.
- 43:42And I take it off, it's heavier. First of all, if I slept in it
- 43:46and I twisted the wrong way, I probably asphyxiate myself
- 43:50because it's a hefty piece of jewelry, but so there's the
- 43:53whole safety element or aspect of things.
- 43:55But this, this this pendant has not left my neck except, for the
- 43:59change, like, the chain that it's been on for the biggest
- 44:03part of the last five years. So I get it, like, tears are
- 44:05very and has been a very important part in my Pagan
- 44:09practices as well especially early on.
- 44:11Now, you know, a lot of folks, may remember when I first
- 44:15started doing like YouTube live streams, I got swatted, not like
- 44:20a bug, like people fought in me. I mean, I got like doors, busted
- 44:23in guns Drawn On Me by the cops. You know, I was targeted by
- 44:30swatters to have local law enforcement come in and disrupt
- 44:36what I was doing which was nothing illegal, was nothing
- 44:39wrong but it was a disruption. From law enforcement, you know,
- 44:44tears will house if you will. So I took a very strong angle
- 44:49and approach to working with tear and venerating tear and
- 44:55gifting to tear, you know. So how do I do it?
- 44:59Like I would have gift with any of the Gods, you know, I
- 45:02approached the Gods in my way of, you know, creating Sacred
- 45:07Space and I would, you know, gift an item, usually a libation
- 45:13of sorts, right? Whether it was need or whether
- 45:15it was a lure. Whiskey in many cases and I
- 45:21would write a piece to say. I would I would pray to the God
- 45:24that I was wanting to to appeal to and invoke, you know?
- 45:30And then I would gift that item. It would I would, I wouldn't
- 45:34consume it. I would destroy it.
- 45:36It would be poured into the Earth or burned if it was like
- 45:40an item that was burnable, you know, so if it was like food and
- 45:43it was not, you know, harmful to the environment or any think
- 45:47that I would burn it or bury it. I've done it all.
- 45:49I buried it. I've burned it, I've bogged
- 45:52things, maybe not necessarily bog it as in like let it sink
- 45:55into the river. But I've sent things down the
- 45:58river. I've sent things off with water
- 46:01in the river. Nothing like littering nothing
- 46:05like that was not biodegradable. But I'm talking like, you know,
- 46:09food items or or or ashes of things that I've burned, you
- 46:13know, stuff like that. Like, there's been a very
- 46:16specific ritual approach to the way I give to the gods.
- 46:19If it's a gift to the gods, if it's if I expect or if I hope
- 46:22nothing, it's an expectation. But if I want something out of
- 46:26this exchange, right? I hope I A gift in hopes of
- 46:30receiving a gift back. That's what the gifting exchange
- 46:33is here for. That's why we do what we do it.
- 46:36That's why the pagans of old did it, right?
- 46:38They gifted to the gods. I sacrifice to the gods because
- 46:40first of all, they were thankful that they didn't die in the
- 46:43harshest time of the year. And they were hoping that they
- 46:45didn't die again the next go-around.
- 46:48So thank you. Lord Odin.
- 46:49Thank you for are to your whatever the gods at the time
- 46:52that they would venerate art. He would gift to them, this
- 46:56animal, right or them. And they would be Would consume
- 46:59it amongst the tribes but the blood was the was the
- 47:02sanctifying thing. The blood was what they use to
- 47:05to bless with and it was now gifted to the gods, it was
- 47:09gifted to the sacred and there was their gift to them in hopes
- 47:14of receiving a gift. Back from the gods of you get to
- 47:17live another winter, you get to have a good strong Harvest.
- 47:20You have plenty of food to last you in the harsh and lean times,
- 47:23you know? So, Maybe we're not the same
- 47:28people anymore, we're not, you know needing extra food for the
- 47:32summer so that we don't die in the winter but there's going to
- 47:34be times I think that whether it's we as individuals or
- 47:37collectively as a tribe or Kindred of sorts right now,
- 47:41there's going to be times when we seek to appeal to the gods
- 47:44and we maybe do that around specific times of the year, you
- 47:48know, maybe we Mark our calendars to observe specific
- 47:52holy Tides but then maybe we also have separate things.
- 47:56Dividual things, where we approach the Gods in our own way
- 47:59to, in hopes of appealing to them.
- 48:01And is it always going to be successful at the gods?
- 48:03Always going to pay attention to one person's actions.
- 48:08Probably not, you know, I mean, historically speaking, we don't
- 48:13know of any cases, where the gods were appeal to at an
- 48:17individual level, except for maybe the do with, like, great
- 48:23Heroes and Kings. The God didn't take special
- 48:25attention to one person's action, unless they were someone
- 48:29of her now and unless they were had a saga written about them,
- 48:32right? But hey, we live in Saga time.
- 48:35So is it out of the realm of possibility?
- 48:37Probably not either, you know. So again the whole it goes back
- 48:45again. Why what's the purpose?
- 48:47Why do we do what we do? You know how you do, it is
- 48:51really up to you. How do you want to venerate tear
- 48:55do you want to, you know, sacrifice something that means a
- 48:59lot to you and in ritually, Destroy it, whether it's burning
- 49:02it bearing, it bogging it, you know, making it unfit for this
- 49:07profane space to be ever be used again, something of Great Value
- 49:12to you. As he knew that he had to
- 49:15sacrifice his hand to the wolf or for the Betrayal that, that,
- 49:20that was, that was shown to him, you know?
- 49:23Just Dude, there's no one that's going to tell you how to do it.
- 49:30Sure there's some ideas and there's some things that you can
- 49:33read about of the ways that the pagans would connect with the
- 49:38sacred. So maybe you take from that and
- 49:41you use those ideas as inspiration to do it your own
- 49:45way. You know, but a lot of people
- 49:49like, what should I use? Should I get is coffee, okay.
- 49:51Well, how much is coffee even worth?
- 49:53Do you think that the gods are going to pay attention to you
- 49:56for pouring down? You know, a two dollar and fifty
- 49:59cent cup of joe into the ground. That's that doesn't mean a whole
- 50:02lot. What would they think of you?
- 50:06Pouring down, you know, a $17, glass of whiskey or 50-something
- 50:12dollar shot, right? Knowing that that is worth way
- 50:17more and, you know, you had to work hard to get that you had
- 50:20to, you know, and you're not enjoying it.
- 50:22You're not taking that sip of whatever it is out of enjoyment,
- 50:25you are buying it for the purpose of gifting to the gods
- 50:30because it its value is so much more, you know.
- 50:33No, I used to know a guy that would eat and drink alcohol.
- 50:39But he would say I'll give to her I'll give him the Red Bull
- 50:42or an energy drink or whatever and you know I mean I'm like
- 50:47okay I mean that's what that's like three bucks.
- 50:51Thank the gods are gonna care about that.
- 50:54But again, you know, part of me was also like, well, you know,
- 50:59maybe that's all you can't afford.
- 51:00Maybe that $3 is your meal for the day.
- 51:02And instead of buying your meal for the day you went, and you
- 51:05got something to give to the gods and you did with out for
- 51:08yourself, in hopes of getting something, back from them.
- 51:11Now, that gesture the, again, the purpose, the reason.
- 51:15Why in all of it, it's all relative in it and that means
- 51:18something. So, You know, on the surface, it
- 51:25may seem like well that ain't much because, you know, it's
- 51:28just a three dollar can of Redbull or it's just a two
- 51:31dollar cup of coffee, or it's just this or it's just that you
- 51:35know, maybe it is maybe it's more than that.
- 51:37Maybe you, you know, again, maybe for that guy, you know,
- 51:40he's like well, that $3 that I spent on that can of Redbull is
- 51:45all I had to eat on that day. And now I'm not going to eat but
- 51:49the God's got something. I know, right?
- 51:51We don't know. So maybe some things to think
- 51:56about. I went around a lot on this
- 52:00episode. You know, I said at the
- 52:02beginning it's going to be one about tear but it's really more
- 52:05than that guys. It's more than just focusing on
- 52:08what to do for one God, could I sit here could I do a podcast?
- 52:11Could I read to you about? Well this is how you blow.
- 52:14This is how you do it. This is Step A through Z.
- 52:18Yeah, sure. You can all fall also find that
- 52:21out for yourself and learn that yourself through some through
- 52:26some study, it's out there. And you also come up with it
- 52:32yourself, you learn it yourself, you do it yourself, you find a
- 52:35way you make the thing happen, you know, if you're doing it
- 52:39just because an article tells you how to do it.
- 52:43What difference is that than just, you know, being like every
- 52:45other hypocrite Christian out here that just, you know, screws
- 52:51around all week long and no and gets up on Sunday.
- 52:54Morning goes to church prays about it and thinks that they're
- 52:57all good. So, find the purpose.
- 53:02Find the reason why And then the how to's are the gun are going
- 53:08to become more sincere, the house, you know, what you do?
- 53:11The, the mechanics of it all are going to fall in place.
- 53:15It's going to be sincere. It's going to be true.
- 53:17It's going to be honest. And that's what makes it more
- 53:22powerful than anything. It's not about reading an
- 53:25instruction manual and falling it.
- 53:26Step by step, I mean, it's okay to stumble over your words
- 53:31during ritual, it's okay to trip.
- 53:36On your way around the fire, you know it's okay to you know it's
- 53:41okay if the wind comes and knocks over your staff that you
- 53:44have propped up. As a centerpiece, you know, it's
- 53:48okay when things don't go 100% as playing because that's life
- 53:52nothing goes, as planned. So you know, be a part of that,
- 53:57be a part of that little hiccup, you know?
- 54:00The that many moment of chaos as it were, you know, be a Part of
- 54:06it, learn from it, what you can? And just keep doing what you're
- 54:11doing and learn along the way. Don't be afraid to learn and
- 54:16pick up new things and find new things.
- 54:19Never, stop learning, never stop searching.
- 54:22So anyway, sky, thank you for writing in and thank you for
