- 0:07The Montreal Expos faced the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field for a daytime doubleheader on Sunday, June 22, 1969.
- 0:14The Expos were in the first year of their franchise history, and it wasn't going well.
- 0:18They were managed by Gene Mock, but they entered this game with a 17-45 record, deep within the cellar of the NL East.
- 0:25The Cubs, on the other hand, were flying high with a five-game lead in the NL East and a 42-24 record.
- 0:31They were managed by the legendary Leo DeRosier in his fourth year with the Cubs and 21st year as a big league manager.
- 0:37This audio recording is from game one of the doubleheader, featuring Montreal broadcasters Dave Van Horn and Russ Taylor.
- 0:44As they rode on the field, just in front of the Chicago Cubs dugout along the third baseline, they went for the pass and end game behind the plate,
- 0:56Big Stan Landy, a first base, Bill Williams, a second, Nick Falaustine, a third, Tom Gorman.
- 1:01Here are the starting lineup for the Montreal Expos. A few changes.
- 1:05We'll try to go over them slowly.
- 1:07By the side of left, they like to keep score of the game as they go along. Out in center field, leading off for the Expos, are the Alfa-Phillips.
- 1:17Bouting number two, on playing right field, Russ DeShott.
- 1:22And this is the first time Shott has been moved up into the second spot in the batting order this year by manager Gene Mock.
- 1:29The third man in the order this afternoon will be second baseman, Gary Sutherland.
- 1:34Bob Bailey replaces Ron Perry against the left hand-fishing this afternoon.
- 1:39Bailey will be playing first base and Batting in the cleanup spot.
- 1:43Coco Laboy returns to the lineup. Coco, Batting, fifth, replaying third base.
- 1:49Jose Herrera, who was taken up by the Expos from the Vancouver Farm Cots, will be playing left field in face of Max Young.
- 1:59Jose Herrera in left field and Batting, sixth.
- 2:03In batting seven will be the catcher, John Bacabella.
- 2:07Bacabella will play for Johnny Bane, who will be out for about ten days with a flip finger.
- 2:13Batting one, the Shott stop, will be batting eight.
- 2:16On the picture, Gary Raczewski, will be batting nine.
- 2:22Here's the batting order for the Chicago Cots.
- 2:26John Keltinger will lead off in short. Paul Popovich, the second baseman, will be batting second for the Cots.
- 2:34Gary Williamson will be out in left field, batting third.
- 2:37The cleanup man, as he was yesterday, Ron Fentel, the third baseman.
- 2:42Ernie Bane, leading the Major Leagues and once batted in, will be batting fifth for the Cots this afternoon.
- 2:49Willie Smith, our sitting left field at batter,
- 2:54has been inserted into the lineup by Leah DeRosa, really smart to be playing left field.
- 3:00Randy Humley, the catcher, ball is snipped in the batting order, batting seventh.
- 3:05John Young, the center fielder, will bat eighth.
- 3:08And, rinsing off the picture, will be ninth in the batting order.
- 3:12A lot of new faces, not a national anthem.
- 3:16And she is our national anthem this day.
- 3:20Wirth of a
- 3:37cage
- 4:18The wind is blowing from right to left at about 14 miles an hour.
- 4:46Adolfo Phillips stands in against the left-hander Rich Nye and we're waiting for the first pitch of this ballgame.
- 4:54Here's Nye's wind up, the lefty delivers, it's swung on a line drive out into left field into the left center power alley.
- 5:01It's in there, Phillips rounds first, he's going to hold up right there after making a big turn.
- 5:06The center fielder Don Young who was pulled around in left center got to that ball quickly and held Phillips to a single.
- 5:14So Adolfo leads off with a base hit off Nye and the batter will be Rusty Stott.
- 5:19Rusty's batting 287, a left-hand hitter.
- 5:26Rich Nye making an one of his infrequent starts, only his third start of the year.
- 5:3131 and two-thirds innings, he has a 4.21 ERA and his record is 0-3.
- 5:40There's one complete game, no shut-out.
- 5:44Nye goes to the stretch, gives Phillips a look, here's the pitch to Rusty, it's funded, first base side it goes foul.
- 6:00Don fouls just a couple of feet up the first base line, the foul will make his way back.
- 6:06Phillips returns to first base.
- 6:10They say it will rain later on, Gene Mark wants to get that man down a second and hopefully to get him in to get a couple of runs across as soon as he can in case this game is shortened by rain.
- 6:21Game getting underway, 39 minutes late.
- 6:270-1 to count on Rusty, here's the stretch, the pitch by Nye, stopped, funded, this one foul back into the screen.
- 6:34So now he looks to see what kind of a sign he gets.
- 6:39And he looks to the dugout, the manager, Gene Mark.
- 6:43Now he's looking to the third base coach, Phoenix Lowe, Lowe going through his set of signs.
- 6:49Phillips still running it first, nobody out.
- 6:53On deck, Gary Sutherland.
- 7:00And all foul takes his lead, the stretch by Nye, this pitch, low outside, ball one, one ball, two strikes.
- 7:12Another good crowd here today, probably about 10,000, 12,000.
- 7:19A lot of fans, even in the rain, came to this ballpark early.
- 7:24The stretch and a throw to first base, Phillips back in plenty of time, just a token throw to first by Nye.
- 7:32Rusty Stabb has 10 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 21 RBIs, low and outside, ball two, count is even, two balls and two strikes.
- 7:45The series is even between these two teams, one game each. X-Files winning a bandy yesterday, three to two.
- 7:58Nye is ready again, the two-two pitch, there goes Phillips, swing and a miss, a throw to second, Adolfo slides in safely, the ball into center field, Phillips trying to third, Young with the throw, Phillips is in there.
- 8:09Adolfo makes it to third.
- 8:13And let's see, he gets a stolen base, a throwing error on Randy Hundley, sending him to third.
- 8:27Rusty is out swinging, one away, so there's a runner at third with Gary Sutherland at the plate, a stolen base for Phillips and he goes to third on Hundley's throwing error.
- 8:39And now Gary Sutherland batting 242. Gary has hit 12 doubles, has one home run and 13 RBIs.
- 8:51Really brought his batting average up on this road trip.
- 8:57Chokes up a little bit on the bat. Here's Nye's windup, the pitch cut on, fouled high into the air, out of play to the right side, back into the stand.
- 9:070-1 to Gary.
- 9:12Like you were pointing out, Rusty, it's going to be very important to score early in this ball game.
- 9:18The weatherman has told us that there's another brainstorm moving in.
- 9:25Here's Nye's windup, the 0-1 to Sutherland is low and inside, one ball and one strike.
- 9:31Adolfo Phillips, the runner at third base with one out on Beckett's Bob Bailey, batting in the cleanup spot against the left-hander, Rich Nye.
- 9:46Nye delivers, pitchers cut on and popped up, shallow left field, going back in the edge of the grass, Cassenger, shortstop, has it.
- 9:55And Adolfo Phillips has to hold third base at the big out for the Cubs, getting Sutherland on that pop-up to the shortstop, Cassenger.
- 10:07Game steps, Bob Bailey, batting 232, playing first base in this ball game.
- 10:24Nye looks to Hundley for a side.
- 10:31The south for Beals, and he's low and outside with the pitch, ball one, one and nothing to Bob Bailey.
- 10:39Bob has 23 hits in 99 at bats, six doubles, a triple.
- 10:47Adolfo Phillips, former member of the Cubs, leading off third. Nye from the windup, three-pitch.
- 10:55Slow on and a line drive base hit out into left field, the Expos lead one to nothing.
- 11:00Bob Bailey comes through, Robert driving in his eleventh run of the season, second hit off Nye.
- 11:15Here's Coco Laboy, one to nothing Montreal, here in the top of the first.
- 11:23Two hits and a run off Nye. Coco, right-hand hitter, he's batting 255, takes one inside, ball one.
- 11:34Laboy has been in need of a rest and was given one by manager Gene Mark.
- 11:39The fans was playing at third base the last two days, which is, they like to get that ball up and in to Laboy.
- 11:47He can give it a pretty good ride. Here's the pitch, Laboy swings high, pop up, right side, Ernie Banks,
- 11:53waves everybody out of the way and makes the catch and that's all for the Expos.
- 11:57Laboy pops up to Banks, five men come to the plate and the Expos get a run of two hits.
- 12:05No errors and one man, one error charged to Hundley, the throwing error into center field.
- 12:11One man was left on base and the score, the Expos won and the Cubs coming to bat.
- 12:17There's a lot of activity elsewhere in Major League Baseball today in the National League.
- 12:22Pittsburgh is leading Philadelphia five to nothing playing in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 12:28St. Louis is trailing New York two to one.
- 12:32In the bottom half of the fourth, the Mets came from behind with two runs in the bottom of the third.
- 12:37They lead that ball game two to one, bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 12:41Nothing yet on the giant Atlantic game in the bottom half of the third inning, still a scoreless tie.
- 12:46The Dodgers lead Cincinnati one to nothing, playing in the top half of the third inning.
- 12:51Over in the American leg, the Yankees got a run across in the top of the first.
- 12:55Lead Boston one to nothing now in the bottom of the first.
- 12:58Cleveland two runs bottom half of the second inning, lead Baltimore two to nothing now playing in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 13:06Other ball games, Minnesota at Oakland, Washington at Detroit, Kansas City at Seattle, and Chicago at California.
- 13:13Nothing yet on those ball games.
- 13:16Here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, one to nothing for the Expos.
- 13:24Moving into the bottom half of the first inning and for our first look at the Chicago Cubs lineup,
- 13:30the Expos are in the lead one to nothing on a couple of timely hits by Adolfo Phillips, the steal of second, going here, and a line single by Bob Bailey.
- 13:42Now we'll see what the Cubs do in their half of the first.
- 13:45It'll be Don Kessinger, Paul Popovich, and Billy Williams.
- 13:53Don Kessinger is a switch hitter.
- 13:57Kessinger first came up with the Cubs his first year in ball ball, which was 1964, he broke in with Fort Worth.
- 14:05Then he came up with the Cubs at the end of the season for four games.
- 14:09He was back at Dallas, Fort Worth in 65 for 46 games, then came to the Cubs to stay for 106 games.
- 14:20He has a lifetime major league batting average of 239.
- 14:31Kessinger batting left against the right-hander, Gary Wazlowski.
- 14:34Fastball, going inside, ball one.
- 14:43Kessinger is one of the main reasons that the Cubs of last year led the national league in defense, second straight year.
- 14:52Here's the pitch, taken for a strike, letter high on the outside corner.
- 14:56Count evens, one ball, one strike.
- 15:03Right-hander, Gary Wazlowski, his first start for the Expos.
- 15:09Here's the pitch, swing and a miss, one and two to Kessinger.
- 15:19Gary's appeared in four games in relief.
- 15:23Total of six innings for the Expos has an ERA of three.
- 15:30They wind up in the pitch, taken low, split the dish but a little low, two balls, two strikes.
- 15:42Paul Popovich is on deck, Expos leading one to nothing, we're in the bottom of the first.
- 15:48Wazlowski missing the outside corner, again low, and he goes to a full count on Kessinger, three balls, two strikes.
- 15:57It's a cloudy, windy, rainy Chicago on this Sunday afternoon.
- 16:07Of course, we'd like to get both games in, hoping for at least one.
- 16:10Here's the fastball, Swarov, line drive foul to the left.
- 16:15Counts still three and two to Kessinger.
- 16:21Joel Malfortano's in the first base coaching box for the Cubs at third base.
- 16:28His feet loser.
- 16:31Gary's wind up, his pitch is fine inside and Kessinger is on.
- 16:41Wazlowski got out in front one and two, then came back and lost him.
- 16:45Kessinger draws the walk, the batter will be Paul Popovich.
- 16:49We'll see what the Cubs try to do here, trailing one nothing in the first inning.
- 16:56Popovich, left hand hitter, batting 273 with the Cubs after 11 games.
- 17:03He's hitting 234 with the Dodgers in 39 games.
- 17:07He'll throw the first base and Kessinger is back in 20 of times.
- 17:14Jose Herrera not too deep in left field.
- 17:19Adolfo Phillips just a couple of steps around the left center.
- 17:25Stob in right, here's the pitch, taken high, ball one.
- 17:32Joseph LeBoy is in on the edge of the grass at third, Bobby winds the shirtstop,
- 17:35Gary Sutherland at second and Bob Baylor the first baseman holding the runner, Kessinger.
- 17:45John Bacabella courses behind the plate, good bound to one catcher,
- 17:50the stretch, throw the first back in time as Kessinger.
- 17:57Ronnie Brand had the middle finger on his right hand,
- 18:05the tip of the finger was cut open by a foul tip yesterday and he had to leave the ballgame.
- 18:11The pitch is low, ball two to Popovich on deck, Billy Williams.
- 18:20In the event that something would happen to John Bacabella that would make it impossible for him to play,
- 18:29Gary Sutherland would be the catcher he's caught before.
- 18:34We're going to get some activity in the exposed bullpen.
- 18:37Here's the pitch, taken for a strike, two and one to Popovich.
- 18:41Dan McGinn, left hander, warming up in the exposed bullpen.
- 18:52Kessinger takes his lead from first, there's nobody out.
- 18:58The stretch, a look at the runner and a throw to first and Kessinger makes his way back safely.
- 19:06Might point out today that they caught Kessinger yesterday, Ronnie Brand with a great throw to second base.
- 19:11Wazlowski with another quick move to first and again, Dan Kessinger is back.
- 19:18The man at the plate is Paul Popovich.
- 19:23The stretch, here's the pitch, taken high, bounced out of the glove of John Bacabella, Kessinger holds.
- 19:31Here comes manager Gene Mark, now he wants to talk to Gary Wazlowski.
- 19:35Gary's gone three and one on Popovich after walking Kessinger.
- 19:40So that's all time out down on the field.
- 19:43Mark's coming out there, he'll be joined by John Bacabella, the catcher.
- 19:50And the conversation between manager Gene Mark and Gary Wazlowski taking place right on top of the hill.
- 19:57First baseman Bob Bailey coming over to take a look.
- 20:00Elsewhere, Pittsburgh, five, Philadelphia nothing, they've completed four.
- 20:06New York leads St. Louis two to one after three and a half.
- 20:09No score in the San Francisco-Atlanta game after two and a half.
- 20:12And it's Los Angeles one, Cincinnati nothing after two.
- 20:15Bill Singer pitching for the Dodgers.
- 20:20All right, we're ready to go.
- 20:21Boc is back in the dugout, Wazlowski has a big pitch coming up here, three and one to count.
- 20:27There goes the runner, the pitch swung on and missed.
- 20:30Bacabella's throw to second and they get Kessinger.
- 20:36Well, that does away with the base runner, a fine throw by John Bacabella to Bobby Wine.
- 20:42And Wine was waiting for him.
- 20:44Boy, Kessinger had a good jump too.
- 20:46He had a good jump on the pitcher, but that was a terrific throw by John Bacabella and a great tag by Bobby Wine.
- 20:52And for the second straight game, Don Kessinger gets caught stealing.
- 20:56And there's nothing slick about that infield, that infield's dry.
- 21:00Wazlowski's pitch is outside a ball.
- 21:04Popovich draws a walk, two walks given up by Gary Wazlowski with one out.
- 21:09Popovich is on and the batter will be Billy Williams.
- 21:14Billy Williams is hitting 298.
- 21:18Among his 78 hits, 15 doubles, 4 dribbles, 8 home runs, 38 RBIs.
- 21:30Billy Williams is appearing in his 887th straight game today.
- 21:34He has not missed a game since September 21st of 1963.
- 21:38He's going after Musial's record.
- 21:40The first pitch, going outside a ball.
- 21:45Musial's record is 895 consecutive games.
- 21:48That's the best in the National League.
- 21:50Williams should break that record one week from today.
- 21:53They have a big day planned here at Wrigley Field for him.
- 21:56It's going to be Billy Williams' day.
- 22:00That's the end here.
- 22:02Popovich leading off first.
- 22:04The pitch to Williams, swung on, bounced foul just off the end of the exposed dugout.
- 22:14One ball and one strike to Williams.
- 22:19The Cubs bird baseman Ron Santo is on deck.
- 22:28And Doug Williams played deep and a few steps around to the right.
- 22:33Wazlowski to the stretch.
- 22:36The pitch, swung on, and a high fly ball down the right field line.
- 22:41Popovich, going back into the corner, he's in the corner and makes the catch.
- 22:45Trying to get back to first is Popovich.
- 22:47The throw is not in time.
- 22:49He got back safely.
- 22:51Just he's down right up against the wall in the right field corner to make the catch.
- 22:55Popovich made it back to first two away.
- 22:58Boy, that was close.
- 22:59Ten seconds for station identification.
- 23:02This is the Exposed Baseball Radio Network.
- 23:07A division of Regal Broadcasting.
- 23:09This is WHRL, 103.1 on your FM dial, Albany, New York.
- 23:20Here is Ron Santo batting 291.
- 23:23Right hand hitter.
- 23:26Santo has 53 RBIs.
- 23:29Second best in the club to Ernie Banks who has 59 and leads the league.
- 23:35Banks is Santo's second in the National League in the RBI Department.
- 23:40Popovich leads out first.
- 23:41Wazlowski's pitch, a check swing, it's low and outside a ball.
- 23:45Dave Rusty stopped 30 lights to go back against the wall for those fly balls.
- 23:49He did it in Dodger Stadium in that clutch situation when the Exposed broke out of their slump.
- 23:55And that one there, he was almost climbing the wall on it.
- 23:59353 down that right field line and stopped way back there on the track, almost in the ivy.
- 24:111-0 the count on Santo.
- 24:13A look at Popovich, here's the pitch.
- 24:15Swung on, fly ball, right field, stopped, holding his ground.
- 24:20Hounds his mitt, makes the catch, that's all for the Cubs in the first.
- 24:26Well the Bruins are down, no runs, no hits.
- 24:29No errors, one man left.
- 24:30The score at the end of one at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Expos won the Cubs nothing.
- 24:36We'd like to remind all our listeners in the Ottawa area that there are a number of TRS locations now open in that area
- 24:43for the purchasing of Expo baseball tickets and also for those pro football games August 11th and August 25th.
- 24:51Alright folks in Ottawa, here are the locations, the Colonial Bus Line at 265 Albert Street in Ottawa.
- 25:01Also two Miracle Mart locations, 2160 Crowding Avenue in the Fairlawn Plaza and 1595 Maryville Road.
- 25:10Now for the folks in Burlington, that's the Vermont Transit Line, you'll find a TRS location.
- 25:18And you know that through TRS you go there, you buy your tickets and you've got nothing to worry about,
- 25:23your seats are reserved for you, you don't have to get up to the ballpark early to buy your tickets,
- 25:28if you want to go to the ballpark early, and that's to take in the fun of batting practice and the sights in Montreal.
- 25:34But you don't have to worry about ticket reservations through TRS because once you buy them you've got them.
- 25:42Well the Expo's got out of that, in the bottom half of the first inning is Walsh Lusky walked two runners,
- 25:48the first one Don Kessinger was caught stealing, a fine throw by John Bocabello to Bobby Wine on the bag at second,
- 25:55then Paul Popovich walked and Billy Williams hit that long one, the rusty stop,
- 26:00and rusty turn and David Pfeiffer that forget about it look, it looked as though it was going to hit the wall or go over the fence,
- 26:06and then he went right back into the corner and pulled it down.
- 26:17All set to go to work now for the Expo's, Jose Herrera, John Bocabello, and Bobby Wine.
- 26:25On the mound left, Andy Rich Nye.
- 26:28Herrera batting 500, he's two for four, one game with the Expo's, this is Jose's second.
- 26:34The pitch is low, ball one, right hand hitter, ball up from Vancouver, real gentleman,
- 26:48Jose right down on the end of that bat, holds him high, Nye winds it up, kicks and deals, fastball is low,
- 26:56he's behind 2-0. Expo scored a run on two hits in the first inning with Bob Bailey driving in Adolfo Phillips,
- 27:05who stole second and went to third on Henley's throwing error, with two outs, Bailey single to left.
- 27:11Nye pitches, swung on, a diving stop by Sando at third, throw to first, is in drive,
- 27:18great play by Cubs third baseman Ron Sando, ball hit hard on the ground, Sando had to dive to his left,
- 27:25he took a hit away from Jose.
- 27:33Herrera's got pretty fair speed, Sando had to pick himself up and make the throw over the banks at first,
- 27:39and they got Herrera one away.
- 27:43The batter, John Bocabello, John is hitting 140.
- 27:52He's at first week in July before John Bateman comes off the disabled list, Ron Brand expected to be out for several days.
- 28:01The first pitch to Bocabello is low and outside, ball one, one out and nobody on here in the top of the second.
- 28:08These Cubs will be at Jerry Park, the 30th through the third, that's next week, Monday through Thursday,
- 28:17a week from this coming Monday. Next pitch is low to Bocabello, ball two, John a right hand hitter, a former Cub.
- 28:26Spent his first full season behind the plate last year, the Chicago farm and the Pacific Coast League at Tacoma.
- 28:33Here's the two nothing to John, swing and a miss for a strike, two and one.
- 28:46Monday night, tomorrow night of course, at Jerry Park, St. Louis Cardinals.
- 28:53Now winds it up to two one who's taken outside, ball three, three and one, Russ really sounds good to say tomorrow night at Jerry Park, doesn't it?
- 29:01Sounds unbelievable to tell you the truth, can't believe it.
- 29:05First there's a welcome home for the club at 1230, tomorrow Plasville, Marie in downtown Montreal.
- 29:12Bocabello fouls one high into the air, out of play to the right, way up into the upper deck.
- 29:19A full count to John, three balls, two strikes, Bobby Wyand is on deck.
- 29:27Hope we'll see the sun in Montreal, we haven't seen it on the road trip, we sure haven't.
- 29:35Outfields around to the left and deep, the pitch, swing and a foul, off to the left of the plate, three and two.
- 29:51Cardinals will be in Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday night games, 8.05 Thursday, the cards may expose 4.05.
- 30:00We'll be back here at Jerry Park next weekend for a weekend series, Friday night, Saturday afternoon and a double dip on Sunday.
- 30:09Here's Nyes three two to Bocabello, second half.
- 30:15John goes down swinging, second strike out for Rich Nye with two away, Bobby Wyand steps in, expo shortstop.
- 30:24And two forty-one, fourteen hits, no extra base hits, has seven RBIs.
- 30:41Nye delivers, swung on and here's the crack ball right up the jump to the right of second base, second baseman Popovich takes care of this and Wyand is retired.
- 30:53Nye put him down one two three with nothing across.
- 30:58I have a feeling that might have stung the hands of Bobby Wyand a little bit.
- 31:04The crack of that bat resounded around this ballpark.
- 31:07Nothing across, the score at the end of one and a half remains, Bocari all one, Chicago nothing.
- 31:13On the other side of the scoreboard, the Mets have taken a 5-1 lead over St. Louis playing in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 31:20They scored three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning after taking a two to one lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.
- 31:28The Giants are leading Atlanta one to nothing in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 31:32Pittsburgh still out in front five to nothing over the Phillies in the top of the fourth.
- 31:37Some American League scores in, the Yankees have scored a run in the first, also in the second inning and they lead the Red Sox two to nothing now playing in the bottom half of the second.
- 31:48Cleveland leads Baltimore two to nothing.
- 31:50That ballgame is in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 31:53The first game between Washington and Detroit is just getting underway.
- 31:58That's the story on the other side of the board.
- 32:00We'll watch these games very closely, especially that Pittsburgh Philadelphia game because the X-Bows are aiming for fifth place.
- 32:09They're still a long way out, but that's the target. Get the Phillies.
- 32:22Now the bottom of the second, Ernie Banks, Willie Smith, Randy Hundley.
- 32:29Ernie Banks is batting 271, 65 hits, 108 total bases, seven doubles, 12 home runs and 59 RBIs.
- 32:41Best in the major leagues.
- 32:44Ernie Banks has been a Chicago Cup now, listen to that ovation for him. 17 years.
- 32:57Right hand hitter.
- 33:02Gary Wazlowski with the windup. The pitch to Ernie is fouled. Out of play to the right. Strike one.
- 33:12Do you think Ernie is popular here in the Chicago Bay?
- 33:17I'll tell you, he owns this city.
- 33:23Number 14. Wazlowski delivers back swings and misses strike two.
- 33:32Willie Smith on deck.
- 33:34In the first inning, the Cubs got two runners on.
- 33:37Kessinger walked and was thrown out attempting to steal. Popovich walked and Wazlowski got out of it.
- 33:43Williams on a deep fly ball to right. High and inside, Ernie hits the deck.
- 33:49One ball, three strikes.
- 33:53And then Chateau applied the right to end the inning.
- 33:56That ball Williams hit sent Staub into the right field corner, just about against the wall.
- 34:07Here's the one-two to Banks, taking high and outside. Ball two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 34:14The pitch.
- 34:24Struck him out. That is all for Ernie Banks. Strikeout number one for Gary Wazlowski.
- 34:32So Banks is through. That's the 39th time the Banks are struck out this season.
- 34:41And here is wonderful Willie Smith, as he's called here in Chicago.
- 34:49Willie is hitting 279 with 17 hits. He's got three doubles, a triple, four home runs, and 11 RBI.
- 34:58He made history during the Atlanta series with Chicago on the night of June 10th.
- 35:04He slammed a 500-foot home run off Ron Reid.
- 35:07It was the first ball hit into the upper level in the new Atlanta stadium.
- 35:12I don't have to tell you that this guy has got power. Left hand hitter.
- 35:16Looked at the pitch. It's low, ball one.
- 35:21Randy Hundley is on deck.
- 35:25The pitch, taken outside. Ball two, two and oh for Smith.
- 35:31It's the first we've seen Willie in the series.
- 35:42He's right down on the end of that pad. It's 35 ounces.
- 35:46Check swing. Did he go through it? He did. It's a strike.
- 35:50Two and one. Stand landing.
- 35:52So plate umpire says, yes sir, Mr. Williams. You went around on that.
- 35:58You can't fool me in the broad daylight on the north side of Chicago.
- 36:08One out with nobody on the pitch.
- 36:11Swung on. Fly ball left field going back. Carrera can't find it.
- 36:15Just off the top of the wall, a home run.
- 36:19A ball game is tied up one to one.
- 36:32Willie Smith with his fifth home run of the year is 12 far behind at the time.
- 36:37A one to one here in the bottom of the second.
- 36:51That ball hit dead left field. Bounced back out.
- 36:58We couldn't tell from here whether it went into the stands and bounced out or came off the top of the yellow rail or just what.
- 37:04But it was a home run and a tie ball game.
- 37:07Now Randy Hundley, the batter, fouls one into the netting behind the plate. Strike one.
- 37:14Hundley is batting three oh five in sixty seven games. He's played in every Chicago game.
- 37:23Catcher Randy Hundley, right hand hitter.
- 37:29The pitch high and in. One ball one strike.
- 37:34Hundley has seven doubles, a triple, eleven home runs and 38 RBIs.
- 37:46This is taken for ball two, two or one. Hundley one of the outstanding young catchers in Major League Baseball today.
- 37:59The fans here at Wrigley Field are still buzzing about Willie Smith's home run.
- 38:04Waslowski delivers and the bouncing ball goes to the left of wide out in the left center of base hit.
- 38:10Hundley will hold up at first with a single. Second hit off Gary Waslowski.
- 38:18That'll bring the center fielder Don Young to the plate. Young is hitting two forty four.
- 38:33He's played in fifty seven of the sixty seven Cubs games and has six doubles, two triples, three home runs and twenty one RBIs.
- 38:46Don Young. Hundley takes his lead off first. Waslowski has the tie and holds the belt.
- 38:54Taken high and inside. Ball one. Center fielder Adolfo Phillips shaded around toward left center.
- 39:04Phillips now moving Herrera over just one or two steps with that breeze now blowing pretty good from the right field wall in toward the left field line.
- 39:20Ball through to Young. Two and nothing.
- 39:26Adolfo just warning Jose that a fly ball coming his way is going to go toward the foul line.
- 39:34With that good breeze here.
- 39:38Hundley on at first. One out.
- 39:42Here's the pitch. It's taken for a strike right across the knees. Two and one.
- 39:48Shovellum seated over toward second base line is playing right in the hole at short.
- 39:53LeBoy about even with the bag at third base.
- 40:04The stretch and a little throw to first base.
- 40:08Move Hundley back. Two and one.
- 40:12They count on the batter. Don Young.
- 40:16Exposed toward in the first inning and Willie Smith's home run here in the bottom of the second is tied it up one to one.
- 40:22One out and Hundley aboard. The pitch taken for strike two. Call. Two and duty Young.
- 40:34On deck is the pitcher Rich Nye.
- 40:43Young is a big man to get.
- 40:53Gary is ready. He holds the belt. Here's the pitch.
- 40:58And it's just missed the outside corner. Three and two.
- 41:13All right now Hundley steps off first. Taking a lead.
- 41:18Just about two and a half steps off the bag.
- 41:22Now he extends it to three. Wasmucy looks at him. Here's the pitch. A check swing. It's high and inside.
- 41:30He's on.
- 41:36Hundley moves down to second. Young is at first. Runners at first and second with one away here in the second.
- 41:43And the batter is the pitcher Rich Nye.
- 41:48And again we're going to get activity in the X-Pose. And it's Dan McGinn up for the second time.
- 42:00Jassenger is on deck.
- 42:07The Cubs get the tie breaking run in scoring position.
- 42:13Wasmucy is ready. Gary delivers. Fastball taken for a strike by Nye. 0-1.
- 42:22The infield a double play depth. Outfield is not too deep and pretty much straight away.
- 42:36The runners lead Hundley from second. Young from first.
- 42:43Here's Gary's pitch. Taken outside. Ball one. A fall and a strike to Rich Nye.
- 42:50See what Nye's done at the plate. Well he's hitting one sixty-seven. He's one for six at the plate this season.
- 43:04One ball and one strike.
- 43:10Here's the pitch. Swung on. Bouncing ball. Bailey has it. Goes to second for one. And there'll be no throw back to first base.
- 43:20Coming in hard was John Young and he upset Bobby Wine. But Young is out as Hundley moved to third.
- 43:27And Nye is on on the field of his choice. Young is out. Bailey to Wine. Young came in hard and took Bobby out of the play. Upended him.
- 43:44So it's two away. Runners at first and third. Don Kessinger. He walked in the first inning and was thrown out attempting to steal.
- 43:53Kessinger batting two ninety-three. Batting three hundred as a left-hander. He's a switch hitter.
- 44:10Nye has done the warm-up jacket.
- 44:14Fakes his lead from first base. Hundley leading from third base. Was Lucey looking to Bocabella. Gary's ready. Bocabella sets the target.
- 44:26Here's the pitch. Swung on. Fly ball. Right field. In the right center. Adolfo Phillips is going to come in and that's Wynn.
- 44:34Put that ball straight away in the center field and Adolfo made the catch to end the inning. So that's all for the Cubs.
- 44:42One run. Willie Smith's home run. Two hits. No errors. And two were left on base. The score at the end of two. X-Bow's one. Cubs one.
- 44:53X-Bow's hit the score sheet first here at the Wrigley Field in Chicago in the top half of the first inning.
- 44:59The lead-off man Adolfo Phillips flashed a single to left field. He stole second base.
- 45:05And on the wild-scroll by the catcher, Randy Hundley, Phillips went down to third. Hundley was charged with a throwing error.
- 45:13Rusty Stobbs struck out and Gary Sutherland popped out to second base. With two outs, Phillips on third base.
- 45:20Bob Bailey lined a single to left field, scoring Phillips with the X-Bow's only run, giving them a one-to-nothing lead.
- 45:28The Cubs got their run in the bottom half of the second inning when with one out, left-hand batter Willie Smith hit an opposite field home run,
- 45:37a long one, over the left field wall into the bleacher seats to tie it up at one-all. And that's how the score stands at the moment.
- 45:44Chicago Cubs one. Montréal X-Bow's one as we go to the top half of the third inning.
- 45:51Series wind-ups this afternoon at Chicago.
- 46:01We move to the top of the third here at Wrigley Field, a one-one ballgame, and it'll be Gary Wazlowski, the X-Bow's pitcher, followed by Adolfo Phillips and Rusty Stobbs.
- 46:15Willie Smith home runs a left in the bottom of the second, tying the ballgame up.
- 46:24Gary Wazlowski.
- 46:30He's 0 for 4 as a hitter with the X-Bow's.
- 46:37That's right-handed.
- 46:43Left-hander Rich Nye on the mound for Chicago, delivers to Wazlowski, low and in, ball one. And boy did Henley rifle that ball back to Rich Nye.
- 46:58Here's the wind-up. Nye kicks high and to you. Wazlowski plings and misses a high fastball. One ball and one strike.
- 47:12The American League New York Yankees lead the Boston Red Sox 2-1 after two innings, Fenway Park and Boston. Next pitch is high and in to Gary, ball two, 2-1.
- 47:23Washington leading Detroit 1-0 after one, and Cleveland has Baltimore 2-0 after six.
- 47:32The pitch to Wazlowski swings and misses a breaking ball. 2-2.
- 47:43Jack Hyatt just hit a home run for San Francisco, his sixth of the year in the fifth inning. There's nobody on.
- 47:53Giants lead Atlanta 2-0.
- 47:59A swing and a foul. Counter still 2-2.
- 48:11Keep looking around in the sky trying to find a break somewhere. We don't see much of one. Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 48:18It's low and outside and there's a full count now to Gary. Three balls, two strikes.
- 48:23Phillips on deck. We stated before, they tell us that there should be no rain for a couple of hours.
- 48:37We've got a little over an hour to go before the weatherman's calling for more rain. Wazlowski strikes out.
- 48:44Gary goes down swinging. Foul tipped the ball, but Hundley hung on to it.
- 48:50Adolfo Phillips. And a base hit to the left in the first inning.
- 48:55Goal second went to third when Hundley threw the ball in the center field and then scored on Bob Bailey's base hit.
- 49:04Adolfo. Right hand hitter.
- 49:17Rich Nice wind up. The left-hander delivers inside. Back came out of there. Ball one.
- 49:24The Cubs here at Wrigley Field have drawn over 500,000 fans in 29 home dates.
- 49:37They're doing very well. Here's a bunt hard right in front of third. Chando up with it. The corner first is in time. Second great play by Ron Chando.
- 49:47The foul was funded hard to the third base drive.
- 49:59And Chando backhanded the ball on the line through off balance to first to get the speedy Adolfo Phillips.
- 50:05Just watching Stan Landis. He's bowled the Cubs infield twice now. Not to throw the ball around the infield after and out.
- 50:13He wants the ball to go right back to the pitcher. He's trying to keep this game moving.
- 50:18Two outs, nobody on. Rusty Scott. Ground ball. Kessinger gobbles it up to throw to first.
- 50:23From the exposure down, one, two, three. Here in the third with nothing across.
- 50:28The score at the end of two and a half, Montreal 1, Chicago 1.

- 51:51This is the Expo Baseball Network.
- 51:54Serving the Golden Triangle of Albany, Connecticut, and Troy.
- 51:59This is the million dollar music sound of WHRL stereo Albany, New York.
- 52:06Going into the bottom half of the third inning here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Expos and the Cubs are all tied up at one apiece.
- 52:14First man up, Paul the Cubs in the bottom of the third, second baseman Paul Popovich.
- 52:22Paul Popovich walked in the first inning.
- 52:26Left hand hitter.
- 52:28Again, Jerry was loose key.
- 52:33Jerry's lineup is pitch is shut on and popped up down the right field line, foul territory.
- 52:39Bailey, first baseman, near the wall now makes the catch right in front of the box, he tossed the end of the Expos dugout.
- 52:50That's one away.
- 52:53Billy Williams, fly to right, deep, the rusty sab in the first inning.
- 52:58Dave, I was just checking the Expos program, the batting order, rather than the batting order, the roster.
- 53:04Here are the players who will be new to Montreal, Ron Fairley, Kev Collins, Adolfo Phillips, Dick Raditz the monster, Howie Reed the pitcher, Herrera the left fielder, and Wes Lusky who is pitching for the Expos this afternoon.
- 53:17His first pitch to Billy Williams, big swing and a miss, strike one.
- 53:24We are three and five against the Chicago Cubs this year here at Wrigley Field, two and three, at Jerry Park, one and two.
- 53:33Wes Lusky's, oh one to Williams, oh he leaned out, had a few notions about that, but let it go low and outside, one ball, one strike.
- 53:41Williams looks very anxious.
- 53:46Cloudy over Chad.
- 53:49Most of the rain here in an hour.
- 53:53So don't go away.
- 53:54A one one ball game.
- 53:56Wes Lusky's pitch, taking low and outside, ball two to Williams, two balls, one strike.
- 54:13Wes Lusky delivers.
- 54:15Inside, ball three, he is behind on Williams three and one.
- 54:19Gary got in trouble with walks in the first inning, walked the first too many paces, but fortunately, Kessinger was thrown out attempting to steal.
- 54:28And he got out of that jam.
- 54:32Pitchers cut on, foul, left side out of play.
- 54:38Three and two.
- 54:41Next post, throwing a run in the first, the Cubs, a home run by Willie Smith in the second to tie it, one to one here in the bottom of the third.
- 54:56Gary's lineup ends it.
- 54:59Just missed the outside corner.
- 55:02Williams is on with a walk.
- 55:05The fourth walk given up by Wes Lusky.
- 55:10That'll bring Ron Sandro to the plate.
- 55:12He's got a nice hand.
- 55:13He's made two plays in the field that were just phenomenal.
- 55:23Diving stop of a ball hit by Herrera.
- 55:27And a great play on Adolfo Phillips, hard bunt to the third base side.
- 55:36One out with one on.
- 55:40Sandro 0 for 1.
- 55:42Pitchers way outside.
- 55:44Ball one.
- 55:46Sandro hit a fly ball to stop in the first inning that ended the inning.
- 55:56Billy Williams takes his lead from first base.
- 56:01Gary Wes Lusky making his first start for the Expos on the mound.
- 56:06Holds at the belt, looks at the runner.
- 56:09Now a throw and Williams skips back.
- 56:25Ron Sandro at the plate.
- 56:30He's got field around to the left for Ron.
- 56:32He steps out, knocking some mud from his plate.
- 56:44He's back in there now.
- 56:48The boy protecting the line at third.
- 56:50Line in the hole.
- 56:52Pitchers high and away.
- 56:53Ball two.
- 56:59And a hole to Ron Sandro.
- 57:05Gary Wes Lusky not having quite the control he'd like to have.
- 57:13Working hard.
- 57:15Pitchers going on line drive over line head out into left field.
- 57:18Williams is going to hold at second base.
- 57:22Herrera came up with that ball and left.
- 57:24Williams holds at second.
- 57:25That's hit number three off was Lusky.
- 57:30And listen to the fans.
- 57:32Ernie Banks coming to the plate with one out.
- 57:34Sandro at first and Williams at second in a 1-1 ball game.
- 57:38Banks went down swinging in the second inning.
- 57:50Again, Dan McGinn, and this is the third time now.
- 57:53McGinn has gone to work in the X-4 full-thread.
- 58:02Again, the Cubs have got the tie-breaking run at second.
- 58:09Banks who started the day batting 271 at the plate.
- 58:13Right-hand hitter.
- 58:14The pitch swung on and bounce foul behind Pete Rieser in the third base,
- 58:18coaching by strike one.
- 58:24Willie Smith is on deck.
- 58:28Some tough men to face here.
- 58:34Williams leading off second.
- 58:37Ron Sandro now takes his lead off first base.
- 58:41Was Lusky to the ball.
- 58:43He deals.
- 58:44Banks swings and fouls one again to the left.
- 58:46This time into the Chicago dugout.
- 58:56The newly-red manager of the Chicago Cubs, Leo DeRosier, is seated.
- 59:06Gary is out in front on Ernie Banks now, 0-2.
- 59:15LeBlanc, and he steps off the rubber.
- 59:22This is another spot to sink in.
- 59:26He can get out in front of that hitter, 0-2.
- 59:29John Bacabella is going to go out and talk to Was Lusky.
- 59:36And the fans let everyone know that they were not too pleased with that.
- 59:45They're very anxious for this game to move along.
- 59:48Dave, I see Dick Raditz, the monster, going out of the bullpen.
- 59:52He's taking off his warming jacket.
- 59:55So likely, Big Raditz will start warming up also for the X-Bow.
- 59:59Yes, he will start warming up.
- 1:00:01Dick Raditz.
- 1:00:02The counter is 0-2 to Ernie Banks.
- 1:00:06Runners at first and second with one out here in the bottom of the third in a 1-1 ballgame.
- 1:00:13Outfield deep, around to the left for Banks.
- 1:00:15Here's Was Lusky's pitch.
- 1:00:17Swung on and popped up.
- 1:00:19Left side, Bobby Wine has made the call.
- 1:00:22And the catch.
- 1:00:24Two away. Banks pops up.
- 1:00:28Well, Willie Smith with the home run and the second stepping to the plate.
- 1:00:38Willie hit a 2-1 Was Lusky pitch to left field for the home run.
- 1:00:45That tied the ballgame up.
- 1:00:55He's a left-hand hitter.
- 1:00:59Gary Was Lusky, the X-Bow's right-hander, trying to get out of this jam.
- 1:01:03Lot of activity. Ben McGinn, the left-hander.
- 1:01:06Dick Raditz, right-hander in the bullpen.
- 1:01:08Smith swings and misses the first pitch.
- 1:01:10Strike one.
- 1:01:13He took a pretty healthy cut.
- 1:01:24All this inning is narrowed down to now is a battle between Was Lusky and Willie Smith now that there are two outs.
- 1:01:34Gary will want to get Smith and get out of this jam.
- 1:01:43Here's the pitch. It's down low.
- 1:01:46Ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 1:01:51For Willie Smith, center fielder Adolfo Phillips is playing straight away.
- 1:01:57Jose Herrera pulled around toward left center a few steps.
- 1:02:06Right side of the infielder's back.
- 1:02:10The pitch.
- 1:02:12Taken wide of the plate.
- 1:02:15Ball two. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:02:28There's a good sign. Ronnie Brand is catching Dick Raditz down in the X-Bow's bullpen.
- 1:02:38He's not throwing the ball hard back to Raditz, but he's able to throw.
- 1:02:42A pitch. Swinging a foul tip behind the plate into the box seats.
- 1:02:47That evens the count at two and two.
- 1:02:55You nervous, Ruff?
- 1:02:56Kind of. When I watched Willie Smith sort of on soil with that vicious swing of his, a cold chill went up my spine.
- 1:03:08Two and two to Willie.
- 1:03:12Two outs. One-one ball game, bottom of the third.
- 1:03:19Now we've got a timeout here as Smith steps out for a moment.
- 1:03:22Gary, take all the time you want.
- 1:03:29Now we're ready. Here's the two-two.
- 1:03:32Swung on and fouled back onto the netting.
- 1:03:38So it's still two and two.
- 1:03:53He's just looking here and could not come up with it.
- 1:03:58Fast enough, but I'm trying to think back. Isn't that the second home run that Smith has had against us this year?
- 1:04:05I may be wrong.
- 1:04:07I don't think he's hit any home runs against the X-Bow's this year.
- 1:04:11The two-two is fouled high into the air down to the right.
- 1:04:17You know, they could use this guy down at Cape Kennedy.
- 1:04:22He really puts the ball into orbit. That one was knocked a mile out of here.
- 1:04:26He gives it a pretty good ride.
- 1:04:32He had five home runs in 55 games last year with the Cubs after being dealt to Chicago from Cleveland.
- 1:04:40He came up in the Detroit organization back in 1960.
- 1:04:45Ninth year of pro ball. Willie Smith at the plate. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:04:53He's stepping up.
- 1:05:00This is a real contest between Wazlowski and Smith.
- 1:05:06They're both trying to keep each other off balance.
- 1:05:10I'm guessing here's the two-two. Slow curve, swung on, popped up left side.
- 1:05:15LaVoy calls for it. Now, Lyon is there and Bobby makes the catch on the edge of the grass.
- 1:05:20And Wazlowski is out of trouble here in the third after the Cubs got two on with only one out.
- 1:05:26Gary got Banks and now Smith on little pop-ups to Bobby Wines.
- 1:05:32No runs, one hit.
- 1:05:35No errors and two Cubs stranded at the end of three at Wrigley Field.
- 1:05:40X-Bow's one, Cubs one.
- 1:05:43In Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia this afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates are leading the Phillies, six to nothing.
- 1:05:49Now playing in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 1:05:52At Shea Stadium in New York, it's five to one for the Mets over St. Louis in the top of the seventh.
- 1:05:59At Atlanta Stadium, San Francisco with runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings,
- 1:06:06lead Atlanta three to nothing, now playing in the bottom half of the sixth.
- 1:06:11The Dodgers are leading Cincinnati four to nothing, playing in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:06:17San Diego and Houston just getting underway.
- 1:06:20In the American League, two to one for the Yankees over the Red Sox in the top of the fourth.
- 1:06:25At Cleveland, two all between the Orioles and the Indians, now playing in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 1:06:31Washington leads Detroit one to nothing in the bottom half of the second inning at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
- 1:06:40Here at Wrigley Field, a one all tie between the Expos and the Cubs.
- 1:06:47For the Expos, one run, two hits, no errors.
- 1:06:51The Cubs, a run on three hits, one error.
- 1:06:54We go to the fourth in a one-one ball game, the first of two scheduled here today at Wrigley Field.
- 1:06:59And here's Russ.
- 1:07:02All right, Jay, first man up for the Expos, Gary Sutherland here in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:07:08Richie Nye, the left-hander, is all set, delivers.
- 1:07:11Dodge that bluffs it out in the center field in four, comes young and he takes it.
- 1:07:17A looper in the short center field, more toward left center, taken by Don Young.
- 1:07:23Gary Sutherland is out of there.
- 1:07:27Bob Bailey, who knocked in the only run for the Expos so far, with a solid single to left field in the first inning.
- 1:07:37Bob Bailey facing the left-hander, Richie Nye, replacing Ron Fairley at first base.
- 1:07:44Nye delivers his first pitch to Big Bob, he takes it for ball one.
- 1:07:50One and a hole on Bob Bailey.
- 1:07:54Outfield playing him deep.
- 1:07:56Boy, is Don Young ever deep in left center field.
- 1:07:58Likewise, Willie Smith in left.
- 1:08:02Next pitch is taken across the inside corner for strike one.
- 1:08:10Willie Smith in left field, Don Young in center, Billy Williams in right field.
- 1:08:18One and one to count on Bob Bailey.
- 1:08:20Next pitch, taken for strike two.
- 1:08:26Nye moves out in front of Bailey, Bailey talking to plate umpire Stan Landis.
- 1:08:34The infield, Ernie Banks at first, Paul Propovich at second.
- 1:08:38At third base, Ron Sandler, the shortstop is Don Kessinger.
- 1:08:42Outside pitch, two and two to count on Bob Bailey.
- 1:08:46Bailey to be followed by Coco LaVoy.
- 1:08:49Bailey single in the first inning, brought in at awful Phillips from third.
- 1:08:56Exposed have had two hits, Phillips and Bailey in the first inning.
- 1:09:00There's a high bouncer down at Propovich's second, he can't make a throw,
- 1:09:04and Bailey's on with an infield hit.
- 1:09:09Paul Propovich had a move to his right and that high bouncer over the bag at second base
- 1:09:14was out of position for a throw, and Bailey was down at first with an infield hit.
- 1:09:18Propovich eventually dropped the ball, but had he not, he would not have been able to make a throw in time.
- 1:09:25So they've given Bob Bailey an infield hit.
- 1:09:29So Bailey is two for two.
- 1:09:34Coco LaVoy.
- 1:09:38Coco pops out to first baseman Ernie Banks his first time up.
- 1:09:44Dousbiel really playing Coco to pull, takes the bond hold back, high inside pitch.
- 1:09:53As Nye doesn't want to give Coco anything that he could put down in the form of a sacrifice bun.
- 1:10:02This is a one-all tie, so the Expos would like to get Bailey down in scoring position on second base.
- 1:10:10Next pitch is taken inside for ball two.
- 1:10:15LaVoy looking down at Peanuts Lowry at third base for a sign.
- 1:10:19Peanuts Lowry coaching for the Expos at third, Bob Olmos at first base.
- 1:10:27The pitch, line shot foul in left field near the Cubs bullpen.
- 1:10:34Tony Canigliaro and Rico Petrocelli have hit Boston home runs in the fourth inning, and Boston has now gone ahead of New York,
- 1:10:43three to two in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:10:45The Petrocelli is 22nd home run of the year.
- 1:10:49New York starter Bill Burback.
- 1:10:52One out, one on, two in one pitch.
- 1:10:54It's high outside.
- 1:10:55The count is now three and one.
- 1:10:57Three balls and one strike on Coco LaVoy.
- 1:11:00Expos to return home tonight arrive in Montréal around 1130 p.m. at Dorval.
- 1:11:06And then they take on the St. Louis Cardinals, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:11:12There goes the runner.
- 1:11:13The ball's hit past Ron Sanoweth in the left field.
- 1:11:16Bailey makes the turn at second, is heading into third, and will hold up.
- 1:11:21Coco LaVoy is down to second with a double.
- 1:11:31A double down the left field line by Coco LaVoy, beyond the reach of Ron Sanoweth, who's made two spectacular plays at third base,
- 1:11:39but this time Sanoweth couldn't get near the ball.
- 1:11:42A Coco LaVoy specialty, Coco likes to hug that line with his line shot.
- 1:11:53And for Coco is 15th double of the year.
- 1:11:59Now at the mound conference, Sanoweth comes in from third, Randy Huntley, out to talk to Richie Nye.
- 1:12:05First base is unoccupied, and Jose Herrera is the batter with one out.
- 1:12:14So we'll see if they decide to put Herrera on, but they'd have to deal with John Bacabella, and Boc's got a lot of power.
- 1:12:26Submarine ball specialist Ted Abernathy is warming up for the Cubs.
- 1:12:34Bailey on third base.
- 1:12:41They don't want to take any chances, so he'll pitch to Herrera.
- 1:12:54Bailey on third, just a few steps off the bag.
- 1:12:58LaVoy a longer lead off second, no one holding him close to the bag.
- 1:13:01The infielders playing in, they'll want to get the runner at the plate on a ground ball.
- 1:13:07They're pitched to Herrera, it's bounced to the third base, and Sanoweth runs around close to the plate, and they get Bob Bailey.
- 1:13:16Well that strategy worked perfectly for the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:13:23Boy, Sanoweth made a spectacular play on that high bouncer by Herrera.
- 1:13:27He turned his back on the plate, turned around, and fired it right to Randy Hundley to get Bob Bailey.
- 1:13:35LaVoy has moved to third, Herrera's on first, and we've got two out.
- 1:13:48Boy, a great play by Ron Sanoweth.
- 1:13:55Nipping Bob Bailey.
- 1:14:01LaVoy was showing only one out for a while, now they've changed it to two away.
- 1:14:06Bacabella the batter, two out, top half of the fourth inning, expose the runners on first and third.
- 1:14:20Richie Nye has given up four hits, Bacabella takes it low for ball one.
- 1:14:26Outfield playing Bacabella deep.
- 1:14:31Willie Smith in deep left field.
- 1:14:36Don Young has moved over slightly toward the power alley in left center.
- 1:14:40The pitch is fouled up onto the screen and rolls down.
- 1:14:47One ball and one strike. The fans out in the left field bleachers have been there since 10.30 this morning.
- 1:14:53I say since 10.30. We arrived with the club at Wrigley Field at 10.30, and they were already there.
- 1:15:00So they were probably there early this morning, and boy are they ever having a ball.
- 1:15:05They have a cheerleading section. One on a miss for strike two.
- 1:15:13One ball and two strikes on Bacabella. They have a cheerleading section.
- 1:15:17They're all wearing yellow hats. Looks like those hard hats. Looks like construction helmets.
- 1:15:23I think they're still here from yesterday, right?
- 1:15:28I think they realized yesterday's game is over.
- 1:15:32But they're a lot like football fans, that crowd out there in left field.
- 1:15:35Inside the Bacabella, through and through the count, they have a cheerleader, and these are cheers I've never heard before.
- 1:15:46They'll pick out the name of a club player and include it in their cheers from time to time.
- 1:15:55The next pitch to Bacabella, fly ball at a short right field.
- 1:15:59Moving under it is Billy Williams. He takes it.
- 1:16:06And Richie Nye gets out of that jam with the help of Ron Santa with third base.
- 1:16:1140-X pulls, no runs on two hits.
- 1:16:15No errors, and two men left stranded.
- 1:16:19We go to the bottom half of the fourth inning, still with a one-all tie.
- 1:16:23Take a look at the scoreboard now. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh playing in the ninth inning at Connie Mack Stadium.
- 1:16:28It's the Pirates sixth, the Phillies nothing.
- 1:16:31St. Louis is at New York, and the Mets at Shea Stadium lead the Cardinals 5-1 after six in the first game of their doubleheader.
- 1:16:39It's the Giants three, Atlanta nothing.
- 1:16:43Seventh inning, first game of two down at Atlanta.
- 1:16:46Ron Marischel for the Giants.
- 1:16:49Los Angeles four, Cincinnati nothing at the end of five and the first of two.
- 1:16:53Bill Singer for the Dodgers.
- 1:16:55And Jim Maloney now is on the mound for Cincinnati. He came on in the fourth inning.
- 1:16:59Flaninger started Granger in the third, and now Maloney came on in the fourth.
- 1:17:04San Diego and Houston single game. It'll be Joe Necrow against Denny LaMastro.
- 1:17:10In the American League, New York leading Boston 2-1 after three and a half innings.
- 1:17:14It's Cleveland three, Baltimore two at the end of eight.
- 1:17:18First game of two.
- 1:17:20Detroit leading Washington 2-1 at the end of two.
- 1:17:24Youngsters down to our left holding a sign.
- 1:17:34Cubs explode and expose the Expos.
- 1:17:42Well the Cubs come to bat in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:17:45For Chicago it'll be the bottom third of their order.
- 1:17:48Randy Hundley, Don Young, and Richie Nye.
- 1:17:53Hundley had a single in the second inning.
- 1:18:00So he's one for one.
- 1:18:06Randy is hitting three, oh five.
- 1:18:13And he's the leader among the Cubs regulars.
- 1:18:19Right hand batter, Randy Hundley.
- 1:18:24Randy has hit 11 home runs this year. Takes the first pitch from Gary Weslowski for ball one.
- 1:18:30What an old account. A one-all tie bottom half of the fourth inning. The Cubs are at bat.
- 1:18:36Weslowski delivers. Randy swings and misses.
- 1:18:39Boy, he took a vicious swing at that pitch from Weslowski.
- 1:18:44Just let me correct the score I gave just a moment ago during the break. It is Boston 3, New York 2 at the end of four.
- 1:18:51I had New York leading 2-1. It's 3-2 Boston after four Fenway.
- 1:18:58One ball and one strike on Randy Hundley.
- 1:19:02Randy has knocked in 38 runs this year.
- 1:19:09One more historian in that Met game, 5-1 for the Met over St. Louis in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:19:18One and two to count now on Hundley.
- 1:19:21Big stand, Landis takes time out.
- 1:19:27Dust off, home play. Now we're all set to go once again.
- 1:19:32The one and two pitch is way high right through the Met of John Bacabella.
- 1:19:39Two balls and two strikes. Final score in the American League.
- 1:19:43The Indians beat the Orioles 3-2. Sudden, Sam McDowell, his ninth win of the year against six losses.
- 1:19:51All the losers, he's 3-2. Foul weighed up over the screen and will roll back down behind home play.
- 1:19:58Boy, that was a quickie. That game took two hours and 14 minutes.
- 1:20:07Two and two to count on Randy Hundley.
- 1:20:10To be followed by Don Young.
- 1:20:16The pitch swung out and missed. Four strike grade. Hundley tosses his bat aside.
- 1:20:29Waslowski's second strike out of the afternoon.
- 1:20:34He got Ernie Banks leading off the second inning. Now he strikes out Randy Hundley.
- 1:20:40Don Young moves in. Young walks in the second inning.
- 1:20:45First pitch to him is high. Waslowski's fastball. One and 0 to count.
- 1:20:58The next pitch is in there just on that inside corner. Four strike one.
- 1:21:10Pete Reiser coaching for the Cubs at third. Low this time for ball two.
- 1:21:16I'll tell you one thing, it's getting just a little bit darker here in Chicago and there are no lights to turn on unless we all light a match at the same time.
- 1:21:29High inside for ball three. Waslowski seems to be quickening his pace up there on the hill.
- 1:21:44Those first four pitches were quick ones. This one is fouled way up out of play upstairs.
- 1:21:53Two balls and two strikes on Randy Hundley. A one-all tie between the Cubs and the Expos.
- 1:22:01The three and two pitch is high and Hundley is on with a walk.
- 1:22:12Pardon me, Young. I said Hundley. Hundley of course struck out. Don Young is on with a walk.
- 1:22:19And that's the fifth walk issued by Gary Waslowski this afternoon.
- 1:22:25Let's take ten seconds for station identification. This is the Expo Baseball Network.
- 1:22:32When news happens, you'll hear the complete story first on 103.1 WHRL Albany, New York.
- 1:22:44Strike one out and the runner on first base, the batter is Richie Nye and the guessing is that he'll try to get that runner down a scoring position at second base.
- 1:22:55Because Nye will be followed by Don Kessinger at the top of the batting order. We'll see what he does. Here comes the infield.
- 1:23:03Strike one. Nye squared around a bump. LaVoy charged in from third. Bailey from first base and Southerland went over to the bag at first to take a possible throw.
- 1:23:16Bobby Wine of course heading over to the bag at second.
- 1:23:23Throw to first and the runner, Don Young, dives back into the bag.
- 1:23:29Now time has come. Richie Nye wants some more advice from Pete Reiser.
- 1:23:36Reiser meets him halfway down the line at third base.
- 1:23:46Probably just double checking the signals on what he is expected to do.
- 1:23:52On one account, it's taken low for ball one.
- 1:23:59And Nye that time made no attempt to square around for the bunt.
- 1:24:03So we'll see what Pete Reiser truly or derosher is calling for.
- 1:24:15The one on one pitch is hit on the ground to Wine. Over to Sudge for one. Back to first. They've got the double play.
- 1:24:29Richie Nye bounces into a double play. Hit it sharply to Bobby Wine at shortstop. Wine flips it over to Gary Sutherland for one.
- 1:24:37And Sutherland wheeled around and fired to the bob Bailey to complete the big DP.
- 1:24:43All the Cubs in their half of the fourth inning, no runs on no hits, no errors, and nobody left on base.
- 1:24:55And don't forget, the Montreal Expo's and St. Louis Cardinals will open a four game series at Jerry Park tomorrow night.
- 1:25:02Our advice is to get to the TRS location nearest you as quickly as possible because there will be big crowds on hand for that four game series.
- 1:25:12Starting tomorrow night at Jerry Park in Montreal. Tuesday in Montreal is a holiday. St. Jean-Baptiste.
- 1:25:21Big parade in the afternoon and people from all over la Belle Provence to Quebec will be heading on the big city.
- 1:25:28And likely will be taking in the ball game at Jerry Park. So to avoid disappointment, get to the nearest TRS location.
- 1:25:37Folks, down in the states of course, we've been mentioning over the past few days the new TRS locations.
- 1:25:44The Vermont Transit line down in Burlington. The Greyhound bus line at Route 3 in Plattsburgh.
- 1:25:54And also in the Ottawa area.
- 1:25:59I'd like to remind the folks up in Ottawa that they have ticket locations now. Ticket outlets, TRS outlets, colonial bus lines, 265 Albert Street in Ottawa.
- 1:26:11Two Miracle Mart locations, 2160 Carling Avenue in the Fairlawn Plaza, and 1595 Maryville Road in Ottawa.
- 1:26:20And then Montreal can purchase tickets at any of the TRS locations throughout the city. Nice curve by Richie Knight, taken for strike two.
- 1:26:31On to the count in Bobby Wine. If you're in the downtown area in Montreal tomorrow, then head over to the Dominion Square building at Peel and St. Catherine.
- 1:26:39There's a TRS ticket booth in the lobby of the Dominion Square building. One and two now on Bobby Wine.
- 1:26:48Willie Smith playing Wine surprisingly deep and a pull. Bobby doesn't pull as a rule. Outside, two and two the count.
- 1:26:59Wine hits his shot usually over the bag at second and in the right field.
- 1:27:08The two and two count is foul right up over the screen.
- 1:27:15There's also a TRS location, a ticket outlet, at the Montreal Trust counter in the Pas de la Marie shopping promenade.
- 1:27:25You'll find one in all Stamford Miracle Mart stores in Montreal, Simpson stores downtown and out on the lakeshore in the Fairview Shopping Center,
- 1:27:33and down in Anjou at the provincial bus terminal, and of course at Jerry Park.
- 1:27:41Jerry Park's ticket office opens from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The one in the Dominion Square building from 9 a.m. until 5 30 p.m.
- 1:27:49A two and two pitch is foul again and the count remains two and two on Bobby Wine.
- 1:28:01Dave, you any idea of Gene Mark's pitching rotation for the series in Montreal? Hold it. Line shot left field.
- 1:28:11Base hit and it gets away from Willie Smith. Wine goes down a second and Mr. Smith will be charged with an error in all likelihood.
- 1:28:20Dot two base hit. A double for Bobby Wine down the line and left field.
- 1:28:31And that's a great way to open up an inning. Russ, it's all going to depend on what happens today.
- 1:28:36If we get to play two games today, Jerry Robertson will probably be the starter against the Cardinals on Monday night.
- 1:28:43If we don't get this one game in here this afternoon, then Mike Wegener will be going on Monday night.
- 1:28:52Dave Justy will start for the Cardinals tomorrow night. Jim Mudcat dread on Tuesday.
- 1:29:00Bob Gibson on Wednesday and in the afternoon game on Thursday, it'll be Nelson Brials.
- 1:29:06Brials who beat the Mets yesterday with his arm and his bat hit a home run in that ball game.
- 1:29:13The pitch, Waslowski lays down a bunt. It's foul along the third baseline. The count is 0-1-1.
- 1:29:22I said Robertson Monday, didn't I? Yes. I meant Bill Stoneman. Jerry's scheduled to go against Mudcat on Tuesday.
- 1:29:29Stoneman will go tomorrow, as I say, unless Wegener does not work today. Then Mike Wegener will pitch the opener tomorrow.
- 1:29:38Again, a reminder to season ticket holders, your ticket for Monday, if you check your ticket you'll find out it's for Tuesday.
- 1:29:46It says day game. It's not a day game. Tuesday St. Jean-Baptiste. It's a night game. Pop fly.
- 1:29:53Ernie Banks is calling for it. In fair territory, takes it.
- 1:30:04Bobby Wine, the runner on second base. Bobby leading off with a double down the line, then Waslowski.
- 1:30:12Pop this one up to Ernie Banks.
- 1:30:18The Dodgers in Cincinnati, 4-0 for the Dodgers, bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:30:23The Giants leading Atlanta 3-0 in the top half of the eighth.
- 1:30:28The batter is Adolfo Phillips. Adolfo has scored the only X-Bowl run. Only two runs in this ball game.
- 1:30:34A home run by Willie Smith, the Cubs. And Phillips came home from third in the single by Bob Bailey.
- 1:30:41Phillips got on with the single in the first inning and stole second. Moved to third in the throwing area by Randy Hundley.
- 1:30:47Takes the first pitch inside for ball one. Adolfo had to get away from that inside pitch from Richie Nye.
- 1:30:585-1 for the Mets over St. Louis, top of the ninth. At Shea Stadium, last chance for the Cardinals.
- 1:31:093-2 Boston over New York in the top of the sixth at Fenway Park. Phillips inside again for ball two.
- 1:31:19Boy, the skies are seen to be threatening right now. I don't see any rain in the area, but the skies are darkening.
- 1:31:34The pitch is swung on. 4-1. Boy, Adolfo really lunged at that breaking pitch from Richie Nye.
- 1:31:47Good news for the X-Bowls. The Pirates beat the Phillies 6-0. Ellis the winner. Billy championed the losers.
- 1:31:56Pirates six runs on 16 hits in one air. Phillies no runs on six hits in no air.
- 1:32:023-1 now to count. Adolfo Phillips.
- 1:32:14Boy, normally at ballpark if it was this dark they'd have the lights on.
- 1:32:20The pitch into the dirt and Phillips is on with a walk.
- 1:32:31Rusty Staub steps in. We have runners on first and second. Bobby Wines on second. Adolfo Phillips is on first base.
- 1:32:39The batter is Rusty Staub. Rusty is 0-2 this afternoon. Struck out in the first and grounded out short to first in the third inning.
- 1:32:51Billy Williams playing south to pole. He's deep in right field. The pitch to Rusty swings out a curve ball and misses for strike one.
- 1:33:04That pitch from Richie Nye just broke away on Rusty. He came right around on it.
- 1:33:14So Rusty's got a 0-1 count. Bobby Wine in scoring position on second base. He's got a one-all tie in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:33:28The pitch to Staub. He takes it for strike two.
- 1:33:37Rusty a little annoyed at himself, steps out of the batter's box, knocks some of the dirt from the plate, now he's back in there again.
- 1:33:45Richie Nye with pitches to spare now with Rusty with that 0-2 count. His next pitch is taken for ball one.
- 1:34:01Rusty batting number two in the order this afternoon and that's the first dive. He has come in above the third spot in the order.
- 1:34:15Nye checks his runner at second base, pitches to sit on the ground right side of the infield, can't get it out of the right field for a base hit.
- 1:34:22Here comes Bobby Wine and the X-Bow's lead 2-1. Phillips holds up at third, fakes the run of the plate.
- 1:34:30When the throw from the outfield got away from first baseman Ernie Banks, Rusty Staub gets the run batted in.
- 1:34:40Single. Rusty wanted to pull it to the right side of that infield and got it right past second baseman Paul Popovich for a base hit.
- 1:34:49Time is called as Joe Becker goes out to talk to Richie Nye and the talk will be goodbye Richie because they're bringing in the right-hander from the bullpen.
- 1:35:03Here are the scores. Philadelphia took it on the chin, Pirates beat them 6-0. Ellis the winner, champion the loser.
- 1:35:10New York 5, St. Louis 1 as they go to the ninth at Shea Stadium in the first of a doubleheader.
- 1:35:16San Francisco leading Atlanta 4-0. Guess who hit his 23rd home run of the year in the eighth inning for the Giants, Russ?
- 1:35:24Big Willie? You're right, McChubby. That's true too.
- 1:35:30Los Angeles 4, Cincinnati nothing at the end of seventh. San Diego and Houston scoreless after one.
- 1:35:37American League, Cleveland beat Baltimore 3-2 in the first game of the twin build.
- 1:35:41Detroit leads Washington 2-1 after three and a half of their first game.
- 1:35:45Boston 3, New York 2 at the end of five at Fenway Park.
- 1:35:56Well in the time he worked, the four and two-thirds innings, one-third inning he worked, Richie Nye gave up six hits, was tagged for two runs.
- 1:36:16One batter, that was the walk to it all fulfilled here in the fifth inning.
- 1:36:26And recorded three strikeouts. That's Richie Nye's contribution to the Cup cause this afternoon.
- 1:36:33Expo leading this ballgame 2-1 on that fine single by Rusty Stobbs at right field, bringing in Bobby Wyde from second base.
- 1:36:42Ted Abernathy with his familiar submarine slant, now warming up for the Cup.
- 1:36:52Take a look at Abernathy's record. He's got a four and one, one loss record, one four loss one, appeared in 27 ballgames, pitched 41-1 in one-third innings.
- 1:37:06Has an ERA of 1.97. Boy that's pretty impressive.
- 1:37:15And he'll be pitching to Gary Sutherland.
- 1:37:24Stobbs is looking for his first hit of the afternoon, he's 0 for 2.
- 1:37:29Hitting 2-42 for the Expos.
- 1:37:33Stobbs on first base, Adolfo Phillips on third.
- 1:37:37Expos leading 2-1.
- 1:37:41And we're in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:37:49The pitch from Abernathy is inside for ball one.
- 1:37:57Willie Smith playing Sutherland very deep in left field.
- 1:38:01Billy Williams has come in a bit in right field, and Don Young in center has moved over toward the left center field power side.
- 1:38:09Left center field.
- 1:38:12The pitch hit in the right field, Billy Williams on the run for it, takes it, here comes the runner, Phillips from third and he'll score.
- 1:38:20The Expos lead 3-1. Fine sacrifice by Gary Sutherland.
- 1:38:30So give Gary Sutherland a run batted in.
- 1:38:35And for Gary that's 14 RBIs now.
- 1:38:39Rusty Stobbs has 22 runs batted in, the leader is Mac Jones with 39.
- 1:38:48Phillips comes in on the sacrifice fly.
- 1:38:54Expos leading 3-1, Bob Bailey the batter. That runner of course belongs to Richie Nye.
- 1:39:01And so does Rusty Stobbs at second base.
- 1:39:04The underhand delivery is low for ball one to Bob Bailey.
- 1:39:09Bailey knocked in the first Expo run in the first inning, bringing in Adolfo Phillips from third.
- 1:39:14So Phillips has been on base twice and has scored twice against his old club, the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:39:21Yes, that makes Adolfo happy.
- 1:39:25And likewise, Mr. Jim Fanning.
- 1:39:31Who negotiated that freeway trade.
- 1:39:38With the Dodgers, allowing Popovich to go to the Cubs.
- 1:39:46To an open fly ball out into left center field, going way back on it all.
- 1:39:52It's now a home run for Bob Bailey, his first of the year.
- 1:39:58Oh, big Bob really nailed that one.
- 1:40:02Two more Expo runs.
- 1:40:05And they lead this ball game 5-1.
- 1:40:08The entire Expo dug it up to congratulate Bob Bailey on his first home run of the year.
- 1:40:15Well, Dave, we were saying the other day that Bob Bailey was overdue for the long one.
- 1:40:23He sure was, and he picked it up at a great time here in this ball game here in the fifth, his third RBI of the afternoon.
- 1:40:33The pitch to Coco Laboy has popped up in the air.
- 1:40:36Ernie Banks is moving over near the wall, and foul territory takes it.
- 1:40:42And the Expo's are out of there.
- 1:40:45But in the top half of the fifth inning, they picked up three runs, four runs on three hits.
- 1:41:00No Chicago errors, and thanks to Bob Bailey, nobody slipped on.
- 1:41:06And the score, going into the bottom half of the fifth inning, 5-1 for the Expo.
- 1:41:14Now we'll look at the scoreboard again.
- 1:41:16In the American League, the Boston game with the New York Yankees at Fenway Park is now in the sixth inning.
- 1:41:24Boston leading 3-2, Conigliaro and Petrocelli with home runs in the fourth, bringing the Red Sox from behind
- 1:41:33and putting them out in front 3-2.
- 1:41:36They're now in the sixth.
- 1:41:38The one final, first game of a doubleheader, Cleveland beat Baltimore 3-2.
- 1:41:42Sam McDowell the winner, Dick Hall the loser.
- 1:41:45Tony Horton and Vern Fuller hit home runs for Cleveland in that ball game.
- 1:41:50They have another game to go.
- 1:41:52Washington's at Detroit for its win bill in the first game, 2-1 Detroit.
- 1:41:57And I don't know what's happened to that ball game, but we haven't had a scorer come in on the bottom of that fourth
- 1:42:02in a long time, and we'll just check the wire quickly here to see if we've had any further word.
- 1:42:07Well, finally, it's come in and Detroit did not score in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:42:12So they're now in the fifth, 2-1 Tigers lead the Senators.
- 1:42:21Bottom half of the fifth inning, and we'll be looking at the top of the Chicago order,
- 1:42:25Don Kessinger, Paul Popovich, and Billy Williams.
- 1:42:29Kessinger got on with a walk in the first inning, then was thrown out trying to steal second by John Bacabella.
- 1:42:36Bacabella to Bobby Wine.
- 1:42:38In the second inning, Kessinger flied out the center field.
- 1:42:43X-Bow's leading 5-1, bottom of the fifth.
- 1:42:50And once the bottom of the fifth is over, it becomes an official ball game.
- 1:42:56That rain should come and cancel out the rest of it, but there's no actual sign of the rain,
- 1:43:03although skies are overcast and threatening.
- 1:43:07From our location, I don't see any rain falling.
- 1:43:10And since there are no umbrellas up, well, you've got to presume that it's not.
- 1:43:16On the ground, out of Sutherland, over to Bailey, and Don Kessinger's out of there.
- 1:43:21Gary Weswinski's still on the hill for the X-Bow.
- 1:43:26Gary has given up only three hits.
- 1:43:29A big one was a home run to Willie Smith in the second inning.
- 1:43:33After that, Randy Hundley had a single, and Ron Sando had a single.
- 1:43:39Ken Henderson just hit his fourth home run of the year for San Francisco in the eighth inning.
- 1:43:43They now lead Atlanta 5-0 with the Braves batting in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:43:48Ken Henderson was a young fellow who was bad news for the X-Bows,
- 1:43:52and Dan McGinn in one of those games at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 1:43:58But the news is good here in Chicago this afternoon.
- 1:44:01The X-Bows are out in front by four runs.
- 1:44:04Two and 0 to count.
- 1:44:06On Paul Popovich, Popovich walked in the first inning and popped out
- 1:44:11to first baseman Bob Bailey in the third.
- 1:44:16Weswinski delivers his 2-0 pitch in there for call strike one.
- 1:44:21Ball three, pardon me, outside.
- 1:44:25The big left arm of Stan Landis.
- 1:44:31Three and 0, and here's the next one.
- 1:44:34Fast ball right down the middle for strike one.
- 1:44:37Three and 1 to count on Popovich.
- 1:44:40Those giant home runs by McCovey and Henderson were off Gary Neibauer, who came on in relief.
- 1:44:45And here's Paul Ramon now pitching the night for Atlanta.
- 1:44:49Three and 1 pitch is high inside, and Popovich is on with his second walk of the afternoon.
- 1:45:01That is the sixth walk issued by Gary Weswinski.
- 1:45:09Billy Williams flied out to Rusty Stobb in the first and walked in the third inning.
- 1:45:15That fly ball to Rusty Stobb was right against the wall in right field.
- 1:45:19And for a few seconds, a lot of us thought that it was going to go over or against the wall.
- 1:45:27Stobb had to go right back into the corner, pull it down 353 feet away.
- 1:45:33The pitch to Williams is low, and the count is one and 0.
- 1:45:37One ball and no strikes on Billy Williams.
- 1:45:42Williams getting 298 for the Cubs.
- 1:45:45Billy has hit eight home runs, fouled at four triples and 15 doubles.
- 1:45:55And he's dangerous.
- 1:45:57He fouled that next pitch along the first baseline where it's picked up by Ronnie Brand in the Expo Bowl Band.
- 1:46:15One ball and one strike on Billy Williams.
- 1:46:29Two and one, two balls and a strike.
- 1:46:33Outfield playing Billy Williams deep, especially Stobb in right field,
- 1:46:38and center fielder Adolfo Phillips.
- 1:46:46Expo is leading 5-1 in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:46:51Don Shaw, who came in with some clutch release pitching.
- 1:46:55Line shot out the glove of Bob Bailey down the line into right field.
- 1:46:59Popovich makes the turn at second base, will go in the third standing up,
- 1:47:03and Williams is on first with a single.
- 1:47:23With one away, the Cubs have runners on first and third,
- 1:47:27and the ever dangerous Ron Santo stepping in.
- 1:47:33Santo, hitting 291, has been a big hero for the Cubs this afternoon,
- 1:47:39with three sparkling plays defensively at third, and Ron has had one hit.
- 1:47:46He's had one of the four hits off Gary Wasielewski.
- 1:47:50Ron Santo, Santo hitting 291, has 12 home runs, 53 runs batted in.
- 1:47:59Oh, big Gary's got to be careful with Ron Santo.
- 1:48:05Santo with one swing of his bat can reduce that Expo lead very quickly,
- 1:48:18taking a 5-4 ball game. It's 5-1 right now,
- 1:48:23and we've got two runners on, Paul Popovich at third base,
- 1:48:27and Billy Williams at first.
- 1:48:33Wasielewski checks his runners, delivers, it's on the ground,
- 1:48:36down the outclass body, wide out of the left field for a base hit.
- 1:48:39Williams is coming out of third, standing up, Popovich is in the score.
- 1:48:45Ron Santo delivers a good outpass shortstop on the ground,
- 1:48:50pass Bobby White into center field.
- 1:48:56Now we've got the big fellow, Dick Rowlitz, warming up,
- 1:49:00along with Don Shaw in the Expo bullpen.
- 1:49:08And this brings up the mayor of Wrigley Field, Ernie Banks.
- 1:49:29First and third are the runners.
- 1:49:31Williams on third, Santo on first, and Ernie Banks is the batter.
- 1:49:38There's that big hole between short and second base,
- 1:49:42as they expect Banks to pull it.
- 1:49:44Wasielewski would like him to hit it on the ground.
- 1:49:47We'll see what happens. Wings and misses, four strike one.
- 1:49:56The Cubs coming alive, Expo's leading this game 5-2,
- 1:50:01with one out in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:50:10All in one to count, and Ernie Banks, the next pitch is low for ball one.
- 1:50:17Banks has hit 12 home runs this year.
- 1:50:22He has knocked in 59 runs.
- 1:50:32One-on-one.
- 1:50:35The crowd cheering for action for a big hit from their hero.
- 1:50:41Wasielewski looking down at Bocabella, gets his sign, now checks his runner.
- 1:50:46The pitch to the bank, line shot, left field base hit, another run.
- 1:50:51Santo holds up at second base,
- 1:50:55and you can make that 60 runs batted in this year for Ernie Banks.
- 1:51:09Here comes Gene Mock.
- 1:51:15Willie Smith coming up, they most certainly will bring in a left-hander.
- 1:51:24It'll be Don Shaw, I believe. Shaw came in and pitched that great relief job yesterday,
- 1:51:30is coming in from the bullpen to pitch to Willie Smith.
- 1:51:35That will be all for Gary Wasielewski.
- 1:51:39Boy, that was a solid smash by Ernie Banks out in the left field.
- 1:51:42It most sounded out of second, and brought in Billy Williams from third
- 1:51:47with the third sub run of the afternoon, the second of the inning.
- 1:51:52Expo still lead this ball game five to three,
- 1:51:55but the Cubs really have a rally going here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:52:01Don Shaw coming in.
- 1:52:05Gary Wasielewski gave up three successive singles in the fifth inning.
- 1:52:12Gary has given up six hits, has been tagged for three runs,
- 1:52:18and the two men on belong to Gary Wasielewski.
- 1:52:22He walked six batters and struck out two.
- 1:52:33We've got one out, so Wasielewski pitched four and one third innings.
- 1:52:41Now, DeRosha's going to take the left-hand hitter Willie Smith out of there
- 1:52:45and bring a right-hand hitter in, Jim Hickman,
- 1:52:49who came into yesterday's ball game as a pinch hitter for the right fielder Al Spangler,
- 1:52:54a left-hand hitter.
- 1:52:55So Jim Hickman will come on the bat for Willie Smith.
- 1:53:01Hickman hitting 194.
- 1:53:07Hickman, a big fellow, right-hand hitter to face Don Shaw.
- 1:53:12Shaw has completed his warm-up pitches,
- 1:53:15and we're all set to resume play in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:53:29Hickman was used as a pinch hitter in the ninth yesterday against Don Shaw,
- 1:53:37and Shaw got him to ground out.
- 1:53:40So let's see what Don Shaw can do on the hill for the X-Balls.
- 1:53:44In the bottom of the fifth, the first pitch to Hickman is low, over ball one.
- 1:53:49The runners are Ron Sandowich second, Ernie Banks at first base.
- 1:53:55Cubs have scored two runs here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:54:00X-Balls lead 5-3.
- 1:54:07Sandowich got a long lead-off second.
- 1:54:12The pitch to Hickman is taken for a strike.
- 1:54:15One-on-one mccount.
- 1:54:29Shaw has appeared in 21 ball games for the X-Balls.
- 1:54:33He's getting a lot of work, and boy, has this fellow Don Shaw ever developed
- 1:54:36into a fine-release pitcher for the X-Balls.
- 1:54:39On the ground, oh, a great stop by Coco Laboy.
- 1:54:42Down a second for one.
- 1:54:45Oh, a fine stop by Coco Laboy.
- 1:54:48He dove into the dirt and grabbed that one.
- 1:54:52It seemed like a sure hit by Jim Hickman.
- 1:54:57Oh, that was a fantastic stop by Coco Laboy.
- 1:55:01Sandowich moves on to third base.
- 1:55:03Coco was down, flat on his tummy.
- 1:55:09After stabbing that one, no way he can get Sandowich.
- 1:55:12So he went over with a long throw to second base to get one anyway.
- 1:55:17Erasing Ernie Banks.
- 1:55:24He's always got two out, and the batter is Randy Hunley.
- 1:55:36Banks with a race five to four, third to second.
- 1:55:41The pitch to Hunley hit on the ground out of Gary Sutherland.
- 1:55:44Studs up with it over to first, and the X-Balls are out of his inning.
- 1:55:50Hunley grounds up, second to first.
- 1:55:53For the X-Balls, or rather for the Cubs, in their half of the fifth inning,
- 1:55:58they picked up two runs on three hits, no X-Balls errors, and two men were left stranded.
- 1:56:06The score, after five complete innings of play, five to three for the X-Balls.
- 1:56:11They go to the top half of the sixth inning with the X-Balls leading five to three.
- 1:56:17Jim Hickman will stay in the ball game, play left field for the Cubs,
- 1:56:22and for right field, Billy Williams has moved over to left.
- 1:56:25Don Young remains in center field.
- 1:56:27The batter is Jose Herrera.
- 1:56:30Ted Abernathy, in relief of Richie Nye, on the hill for the Cubs, delivers his first pitch,
- 1:56:37and it's barreled into the dirt in front of home plate.
- 1:56:430-1 on Herrera.
- 1:56:51The Bleacher fans standing up, give a fine hand to Jim Hickman,
- 1:56:56and Hickman also trots over to help some fans who've dropped something out on the field.
- 1:57:01Ron Fairley was telling us before today's game how he hates to play here at Wrigley Field at times.
- 1:57:08He said, those Bleacher rights really give you a hard time.
- 1:57:11They use you as a target.
- 1:57:13I'll tell you more about it later.
- 1:57:14On the ground of Saddle, go to first, and Herrera's out.
- 1:57:23Herrera goes down five to three.
- 1:57:25Fairley says the game that they play is to see which fan can get nearest to the batter without hitting him with things.
- 1:57:35Ron says that he's been felted with batteries with all kinds of debris.
- 1:57:42But he says the game that they actually play is not to hit the outfielder, but to come close.
- 1:57:52John Bacabella swings at the first pitch from Ted Abernathy and misses for strike one.
- 1:58:02Well, I don't know about the throwing of the debris.
- 1:58:04Of course, that's frowned upon in any sport, hockey, of course, and the ice and baseball on the field of play.
- 1:58:13A lot of the fans have a great time, and boy, they're having a great time here at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
- 1:58:17Very colorful crowd.
- 1:58:19The count is now one and one on Bacabella.
- 1:58:23Boy, you see signs all over the ballpark.
- 1:58:26The one and one pitch was low.
- 1:58:28The count becomes two and one.
- 1:58:30Here, for those of you who have been to Wrigley Field, to give you an idea of how overcast it is here,
- 1:58:36the buildings that we're looking at, you can't see the tops of the buildings.
- 1:58:41Really a dark, overcast afternoon.
- 1:58:46The two-and-one pitch is fouled to the right, up into the top deck.
- 1:58:54Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:58:57Bacabella is 0-2.
- 1:58:59It's struck out in the second and fly it out to right field.
- 1:59:03Big Boc is hitting 1-40.
- 1:59:06One home run and two doubles.
- 1:59:10Next pitch is popped again out of play.
- 1:59:15Two and two to count.
- 1:59:22Boy, we've said this a number of times now.
- 1:59:26Wrigley is going to be a very popular figure with the fans of Jerry Park.
- 1:59:31We were asking Ron if, you know, he intends to aim for that right field fence.
- 1:59:37You know, they have that jet alley or that jet stream.
- 1:59:40Boy, a hard-hit ball by Bacabella out in the left field.
- 1:59:45It's pulled down by Billy Williams, but Big John got good wood on that one.
- 1:59:50Long five-all.
- 1:59:52Williams didn't have to move for it.
- 1:59:54Bacabella pretty deep in left field.
- 1:59:57Bobby Wine at a double.
- 2:00:01In the fifth inning, and he's up now.
- 2:00:04Bobby is 1-2.
- 2:00:06Quarter run in that X-bow rally in the fifth.
- 2:00:10Fouls the first pitch and catches it himself.
- 2:00:13Hands it over to Big Stan Landis.
- 2:00:17Look the ball over.
- 2:00:25Hands it to Randy Hundley or a new ball and throws the reject away.
- 2:00:33All in one to count on Bobby Wine.
- 2:00:40The pitch, it misses for ball one.
- 2:00:44One ball and one strike.
- 2:00:45They've got a pretty good crowd here today, considering the threatening weather.
- 2:00:49Had it been perfect, the report was it would have been a sellout.
- 2:00:53Strike three, swinging.
- 2:00:55Wine is out.
- 2:00:57Oh, strike two.
- 2:01:02Bobby had that dejected look when he went around on that pitch.
- 2:01:08On the ground, pass down, a base hit out in the left field.
- 2:01:11Wine's second single of the afternoon.
- 2:01:13He's got a try for two, and he's in there with his second double.
- 2:01:23Bobby Wine at double.
- 2:01:27Down the line and left.
- 2:01:31Boy, he's been a surprise, Dave, with that bat of his.
- 2:01:34Really came through in San Francisco.
- 2:01:37Bobby really has.
- 2:01:38He's been very pleased with his hitting.
- 2:01:43Manager Gene Mock, needless to say, is very happy about the job that Bobby Wine has done at the plate.
- 2:01:48And as Gene was pointing out again when we talked to him last night, Russ,
- 2:01:51remember that Bobby Wine has not played that much baseball in the last couple of years.
- 2:01:59Abernathy delivers to Don Shaw who takes the call, strike one.
- 2:02:04Missed all of last season, so Bobby has really had only 21 games under his belt.
- 2:02:14He's been complaining that his shipment of bats hasn't arrived.
- 2:02:18It's been long overdue from Louisville, the Louisville Slugger people.
- 2:02:23I said to him yesterday in the dugout, why complain, Bobby, the way those hits are coming off, the bats are using.
- 2:02:30Don't change it.
- 2:02:32Count is now 0-2 on Don Shaw.
- 2:02:37Abernathy looks towards second, delivers the 0-2 pitch, and Shaw strikes out.
- 2:02:48All the Expos in the sixth inning, no runs on one hit, no errors by the Cubs, one man left on.
- 2:02:55Going to the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:02:57Expos leading 5-3.
- 2:03:00Let's take a look now at the scores that are just in.
- 2:03:03It's Boston 3-New York 2 with Boston batting in the bottom of the eighth at Fenway Park, the first of two games.
- 2:03:12The batteries are in on the game out at California.
- 2:03:15Chicago and the Angels win against McLaughlin.
- 2:03:19Baltimore and Cleveland are scoreless in their second game after the Indians won the first one, 3-2.
- 2:03:25Pittsburgh scored two runs in the first inning against the Phillies in their second game after winning the first one, 6-0.
- 2:03:31The Phillies now batting.
- 2:03:33Those two runs came on Willie Stargell's tenth home run of the year.
- 2:03:38San Diego and Houston are scoreless after four innings in the Astrodome.
- 2:03:43And a final score, Los Angeles 5, Cincinnati nothing, a five-hitter by Bill Singer, Tony Cloninger the loser.
- 2:03:51The first game of a doubleheader, right, first of two.
- 2:03:55Singer over Cloninger.
- 2:03:57Dodgers win it 5-0.
- 2:04:05In the bottom half of the sixth inning, it'll be Don Young, likely a pinch hitter for Abernathy.
- 2:04:15I say likely, we don't know yet, there's a man warming up in the bullpen for the Cubs.
- 2:04:23Looks like Phil Regan warming up for Chicago out of the bullpen in left field.
- 2:04:38So it's Don Young facing Don Shaw.
- 2:04:42The pitch accidentally hits Young's bat, he didn't want to go for it.
- 2:04:47Sort of his body went for the pitch, but his bat didn't, but got in the way of that pitch from Don Shaw.
- 2:04:58The fellow picking up the bat is Gene Oliver.
- 2:05:01He's been around baseball a long time with a lot of clubs.
- 2:05:07Strike two, iron pitch from Shaw.
- 2:05:13Oliver a right-hand batter.
- 2:05:17We saw him in Montreal, he was in with a number of teams, including the Rochester Red Wings.
- 2:05:23Inside to Young, the count is one and two.
- 2:05:28Outfield playing Young almost straight away, with the exception of Phillips,
- 2:05:32he shaded over toward left field slightly, toward left center field.
- 2:05:38High and outside for ball two.
- 2:05:41Orlando Cepeda spoiled Juan Marichal's bid for a shutout, hitting a home run in the ninth.
- 2:05:47The Giants beat the Braves five to one.
- 2:05:49Marichal now nine and two on the year.
- 2:05:51Pappas was the loser, four and seven.
- 2:05:54The two and two pitch.
- 2:05:57Strike three, call, a beautiful pitch from Don Shaw just hooked right in there.
- 2:06:06Boy, this fellow Shaw has come a long way since about a month ago, a month and a half ago.
- 2:06:13Gene Oliver, a pinch hitter, steps in, hitting for Abernathy.
- 2:06:26We're in the bottom half of the sixth inning, Expo leading this ball game, five to three.
- 2:06:32Two-run lead, and the fellow trying to protect that two-run lead is Don Shaw, the left-hander.
- 2:06:40Don Shaw will go down in history as the first winning pitcher for the Expo.
- 2:06:46Strike two, strike one, one-on-one the count.
- 2:06:54He won it in relief at Shea Stadium in New York.
- 2:07:00What a ball game that was.
- 2:07:02The one-on-one pitch is taken for ball two.
- 2:07:07Russ, the Mets beat the Cardinals five to one.
- 2:07:10Gentry the winner, Carlton the loser.
- 2:07:13First game of a double-header.
- 2:07:17Now that victory could hurt the Cubs if the Expos beat them.
- 2:07:22Strike, beautiful pitch from Don Shaw right off the table.
- 2:07:27It just sank after hitting the front of that strike zone.
- 2:07:32Oliver didn't like the call, neither did the crowd here at Wrigley Field.
- 2:07:36Swings at the dirt with his bat.
- 2:07:39Now he's back in there.
- 2:07:41Two balls and two strikes and pinch hitter Gene Oliver in the bottom of the sixth with one out, nobody on.
- 2:07:48Don Shaw into his motion, a two-and-two pitch, breaks low under the knees for ball three, full count.
- 2:07:57Regan continues to warm up, so we'll be looking at Phil Regan, the former Dodger,
- 2:08:05fellow accused of throwing the Vaseline pitch.
- 2:08:08We'll be seeing him in the top half of the seventh inning.
- 2:08:16He looks down at Bacabella, gets the sign, delivers a three-and-two pitch, strike three, swinging.
- 2:08:22And pinch hitter Gene Oliver is out of there.
- 2:08:27Don Shaw, since coming in to the ball game in the fifth inning, has retired four in a row.
- 2:08:37Don Kessinger, the leadoff man, a switch hitter, will bat right-handed against the left-hander Don Shaw.
- 2:08:44Phillips not too deep in center field, and Stobb is in shallow right field.
- 2:08:53The pitch, fly ball, center field, here comes Phillips, can't get it, he traps the ball, base hit.
- 2:09:00Adolf will need a fine try at it, try to dive and make a shoestring catch, but he trapped it, and Kessinger is on with a single.
- 2:09:11Adolfo has the book on Don Kessinger.
- 2:09:19He played him pretty well on that. He came in, luckily that he did come in to play sort of a short center field.
- 2:09:28On the ground, LeBoy, sort of first, and Paul Popovich is out of there, and so are the Cubs.
- 2:09:40Chicago, no runs on one hit, no expo errors, one man left on.
- 2:09:49After six complete innings of play, it's still five to three for the Expos over the Cubs.
- 2:09:56For the Cardinals series, good crowds are expected, you want to get some good seats and be at Jerry Park.
- 2:10:03As the team returns from this long home stand beginning tomorrow night, an 8-0-5 game at Jerry Park.
- 2:10:10Taking a look now at some new TRS locations for the fans in the Ottawa area.
- 2:10:17Colonial Bus Lines, 265 Albert Avenue, and at two Miracle Mart locations, 2160 Carling Avenue in the Fairlawn Plaza, and at 1595 Marivale Road.
- 2:10:28There's also a new TRS location in Burlington, Vermont at Vermont Transit Lines.
- 2:10:35We'd also like to take a moment to mention again, season ticket holders.
- 2:10:41Remember, Tuesday is a night game, your tickets are marked as an afternoon game, but Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are all 8-0-5 games with the Cardinals, and then a 4-0-5 game on Thursday.
- 2:10:58Here's the line score after six complete innings of play, Expos five runs on eight hits and no errors, the Cubs two runs on six hits and one error.
- 2:11:10The throwing error by Randy Hunley.
- 2:11:13And we've got a new man on the hill for Chicago, right-hander Phil Regan.
- 2:11:19And fans who have seen Phil Regan pitch down through the years, and those who saw him pitch at Jerry Park earlier this year on the Cubs visit to Montreal, notice that he's got a lot of crazy motion.
- 2:11:31And this is what the batters have to deal with, among other things, is that crazy motion of his, like he'll throw very quickly, but the ball won't come out so quickly.
- 2:11:44Next time the Cubs get to Montreal and Regan pitches, you'll see what I mean if you haven't seen it already.
- 2:11:51All right, Dave Van Horn is all set for the play-by-play of the next three innings, Dave.
- 2:11:57Regan had some fine years at Detroit, then at Los Angeles, 66 through 68, lifetime ERA of 3.77.
- 2:12:05Pitch popped up, third base side foul territory.
- 2:12:08Santo has it, Phillips retired.
- 2:12:14One away.
- 2:12:16Rusty Stobb, one for three.
- 2:12:18He'll be the batter.
- 2:12:20Regan is seven and five.
- 2:12:24This is his 31st appearance as a 3.67 earned run average.
- 2:12:33Exposed leading here, five to three.
- 2:12:37We're in the top of the seventh.
- 2:12:40One out, none on.
- 2:12:42The pitch to Stobb inside, ball one.
- 2:12:48Bill Williams in left, Don Young in center, Jim Hickman in right field.
- 2:12:53Around the infield, Santo at third, Kassinger at short.
- 2:12:58Second baseman Paul Popovich at first.
- 2:13:01Ernie Banks protecting the line against Stobb, this left-hand hitter.
- 2:13:04Regan deals low.
- 2:13:07Ball two, two and nothing to Rusty.
- 2:13:09On deck will be Gary Sutherland.
- 2:13:13All kinds of things happening with the Dodgers right now leading the Western Division.
- 2:13:18They beat Cincinnati five to nothing, a five hitter by Bill Singer in San Francisco beat Atlanta five to one.
- 2:13:23Marischal winning.
- 2:13:26The pitch, swung on, lifted high and foul, back to the right.
- 2:13:30That Phil Regan will drive you crazy trying to figure him out with all the twitching, all the movements that he undergoes there on the hill,
- 2:13:38gives a hitch to his trousers, plugs at his cap, shrugs his shoulders, hitches all over.
- 2:13:45Look at that herky-jerky delivery.
- 2:13:52Pittsburgh beat the Phillies six-nothing. That's good news for us.
- 2:13:58Here's the pitch to Rusty. Fast ball right down the pipe. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:14:08Chicago is disappearing right under our noses here, Russ.
- 2:14:13You mean the city of Chicago, not the cup.
- 2:14:17The city, the city of Chicago.
- 2:14:23The weatherman's doing his disappearing act and he's taking the whole city with him.
- 2:14:32This is the first of two here this afternoon.
- 2:14:38Here's the pitch. A change is fouled back into the screen behind the plate. Count is still two and two to Rusty.
- 2:14:44Exposed scored a run in the first. Willie Smith tied it up with a home run in the second.
- 2:14:49It was a one-one ball game till the fifth. The Exposed exploded for four runs on three hits, chased the starting Rich Nye, took a five to one lead.
- 2:14:57Cubs came back, got two runs in the bottom of the fifth and chased Waszlowski.
- 2:15:04Five to three here in the top of the seventh. Sutherland on deck, stop at the plate.
- 2:15:09Here's the two-two pitch. Swung on, high hopper, banks waiting. He gloves it.

- 2:15:39Bobby Wines gone two for three. Bailey is three for three.
- 2:15:46Here's Gary now.
- 2:15:52The windup in pitch is low inside, ball one. Gary popped up to Kessinger in the first, flied out to Young in center in the fourth.
- 2:15:59It is sacrifice fly down the right field line in the fifth.
- 2:16:08Stan Landis, the plate umpire, giving a little warning over to the Expos dugout for something.
- 2:16:24Here's the 1-0. A check swing. The pitch is low and outside for ball two. Two balls and nothing.
- 2:16:31I don't know whether the Expos are on Landis, Reagan, or maybe both of them.
- 2:16:38The now mayor of Cajos, Frank D. Colabotolo.
- 2:16:42I also spoke with Lawrence Fabro, the executive secretary to the mayor.
- 2:16:49Phil comes on to log a three-up, three-down inning.
- 2:16:54First time the Expos have been retired one, two, three since the third.
- 2:16:58At the end of six and a half here at Wrigley Field, Montreal five, the Cubs three.
- 2:17:04While we're moving into the Cubs half of the seventh inning, the Expos still leading this ball game five to three.
- 2:17:10They got one run in the first. Cubs tied it up at one-all on the bottom of the second inning.
- 2:17:15Another home run by Willie Smith into the left field ledger seat.

- 2:17:46Don Shaw came on in the fifth, replacing starter Gary Wazlowski.
- 2:17:54Don got a save here yesterday.
- 2:17:58The Expos three to two win over the Cubs.
- 2:18:01Bich is cut on and the bounder goes to Bailey. Bob was up with it to Shaw in time. Whoa, brother. Bob Bailey put himself in front of that ball.
- 2:18:12No doubt about the fact Bob was going to knock it down, but for just an instant he couldn't find the handle on the ball.
- 2:18:18Recovered in time to get it to Shaw, who covered first.
- 2:18:22Williams retired.
- 2:18:29Well, here is Ron Santo. Santo is two for three.
- 2:18:35He normally will hit that ball to the left side.
- 2:18:39Bobby Wyne's been playing deep in the hole.
- 2:18:42And LaBoy over protecting the line. Santo has gotten a couple of hits here today, getting that ball just between second base and Bobby Wyne.
- 2:18:51Bich is cut on. Here's the ball through LaBoy and Wyne. A hard hit ball. A base hit out in the left.
- 2:18:58Santo's third hit of the afternoon. You know he hit that ball hard because LaBoy and Wyne were playing fairly close together and he got that ball right between them.
- 2:19:09Second hit off Don Shaw with one out. Here's Ernie Banks.
- 2:19:15Well, that hit by Santo brought the fans to life again here at Wrigley Field.
- 2:19:21Shaw to face Ernie Banks who's one for three. The pitch is low. Ball one.
- 2:19:26Struck out in the second. Popped up to Wyne in the third.
- 2:19:30And then got a hit off Waslowski in the fifth that drove in a run.
- 2:19:40One out and one on. The stretch by Don. Here's the pitch to Banks.
- 2:19:44Taken just above the knees. Hit the outside corner and strike. One ball, one strike.
- 2:19:51Santo takes his lead from first base. The pitch swung on. High fly ball. Left field going back. Carrera.
- 2:20:00He's under it and he puts the squeeze on it. And Santo will hold it first base. Two away.
- 2:20:11Jim Hickman steps in. He grounded out to Sutherland. Hit into a field his choice in the fifth.
- 2:20:20Takes a strike. 0-1. He hit into a fielder's choice. Got on. Banks was at first. Was rubbed out at second.
- 2:20:33Don Shaw is ready. The southpaw delivers. Swung on. And it's a one hopper.
- 2:20:37Wyne has it to throw to first base in time and Shaw's out of the jam.
- 2:20:45A one out single by Santo goes down the drain. No runs. One hit. No errors.
- 2:20:54And one man left to score at the end of seventh. The Expos five. The Cubs three.
- 2:21:03Here at Wrigley Field in Chicago, we go to the top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:21:08The Expos are leading the Cubs five to three. Here again Dave Van Horn.
- 2:21:15For our Expos now on the top of the eighth it will be Bob Bailey, Coco Laboy, and Jose Herrera.
- 2:21:24Bailey is three for three. Got a hit in the first. Again in the fourth.
- 2:21:29Hit a home run in the fifth. His first home run of the year.
- 2:21:36The second home run taken on the Hill.
- 2:21:41The wind up. End pitch. High inside and Bailey has to bite the dust.
- 2:21:50One ball, no strikes.
- 2:21:55Bob had a word there for Randy Hundley. He said now Randy tell me he didn't mean that did he?
- 2:22:00Swing and a high fly ball. Left field going back. Williams going back. He can't get it.
- 2:22:07It's over the screen. A home run for Bob Bailey. Number two of the afternoon.
- 2:22:12And that ball disappeared in the haze here at Wrigley Field.
- 2:22:18Bob Bailey four for four. His second home run.
- 2:22:22First two of the season for Bob and the whole Expos bench is up to greet him.
- 2:22:28Holy moly what a close that was. Bob really tagged it over the deep side in left field.
- 2:22:33Way up over the screen. Said thank you to Phil Rigan for that high pitch to his skull.
- 2:22:39Four RBIs. Laboy swings. Hard hit ball high in the air but out to right center and coasting over to make the catches. Jim Hickman.
- 2:22:49So Laboy retired on the first pitch. One away.
- 2:22:54And now it's now six to three. That's a big run. That home run by Bob Bailey.
- 2:23:02And Bob really powered that ball too.
- 2:23:08Ron Fairley says how do you like that? I give the guy a chance to play. He goes four for four with two home runs and four RBIs.
- 2:23:16I'm going to get my swings in anyway. So here's Ron Fairley to bat for Jose Herrera who is over three.
- 2:23:22Fairley up for the first time. Ron swings on the first pitch. Pops it up.
- 2:23:26First base side. Banks in on the edge of the infield grass. Makes the catch. Two down.
- 2:23:32Fairley retired on one pitch.
- 2:23:41John Bacabella will be the batter.
- 2:23:50John is all for three. Struck out in the second. Fly ball to right in the fourth. Lined out to left in the sixth.
- 2:23:59Boy I'll tell you that home run by Bailey really put a hush over the fans here at Wrigley Field.
- 2:24:08Two outs with nobody on. The pitch to John. Swing and a foul. Bounce back behind the plate. Strike one.
- 2:24:19The right hander delivers. Swung on. Popped up. Hundley's off with the mask behind the plate.
- 2:24:23Casts the mask aside. Makes the catch. Exposed it through in the eighth.
- 2:24:30One run on one hit. Bob Bailey's second home run of the afternoon. No errors in the field and nobody left on base.
- 2:24:36The score now at the end of seven and a half here at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Expos six. The Cubs three.
- 2:24:46We go to the bottom half of the eighth inning and the Expos have an extra run.
- 2:24:51Thanks to Bob Bailey's second home run of the afternoon and his second of the season.
- 2:24:57It's now six to two. Six to three for the Expos over the Cubs in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:25:03Ron Fairley has taken over in left field for Montreal. Adolfo Phillipson center Rusty Stobbs in right.
- 2:25:10The bottom third of the Cubs order here in the eighth. Hundley, young.
- 2:25:17And then we'll probably get a pinch hitter.
- 2:25:25Randy Hundley is one for three. Got a hit in the second off starter was Lewski. Don Shaw delivers a strike.
- 2:25:31Oh and one to Hundley. Hundley struck out in the fourth and grounded out against Shaw in the fifth.
- 2:25:43The count is all in one for the Cubs catcher Randy Hundley.
- 2:25:50Right hand hitter. Don Shaw winds it up the pitch low outside ball one.
- 2:25:57Don Shaw came on in the fifth when starter Gary Was Lewski got in trouble.
- 2:26:04Cubs scored two runs in that inning. Got back in the ball game.
- 2:26:10Here's the pitch. Swung on a hard hit ball high into the air right center. Stop going back now.
- 2:26:16Rusty waiting under it makes the catch.
- 2:26:22One away. The batter Don Young. Young walked his first two times up and then against Shaw was called out on strikes in the sixth.
- 2:26:35One out and nobody on. Six to three the Expos leading the Cubs.
- 2:26:41Here on this final day of the long road trip.
- 2:26:44The first game of a scheduled double header.
- 2:26:47Fastball low inside. Ball one to Young.
- 2:26:56Russell have the scoreboard for you details on all the other games right after this one.
- 2:27:00Here's the pitch. Swung on and bounce foul over into the Chicago dugout behind third base.
- 2:27:07One ball one strike.
- 2:27:16Despite of the fact that it's very hazy here it's a little bit lighter right now than it was 30 minutes ago.
- 2:27:25Pitch is outside two balls and a strike.
- 2:27:38Don Shaw has the sign. Wind up in the pitch. Swung on. Fly ball shallow center field going back.
- 2:27:46Settling back pedaling back back. He's got it.
- 2:27:50Gary going back quickly. Got out in the shallow center field and made the catch.
- 2:27:58That is two away. The pinch hitter will be Ken Rudolph.
- 2:28:07Ken Rudolph.
- 2:28:11Batting 111 on the areas. He's appeared in only nine games.
- 2:28:16Takes a low outside fastball from Shaw.
- 2:28:19One and oh.
- 2:28:27Looks like Dick Selma.
- 2:28:30The bullpen I can't tell right now. Swing and popped up right side of the plate. Baca Bella under it.
- 2:28:38Foul territory. John's got it. That's all for Ken Rudolph and the Cubs are through in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:28:44Shaw mowed them down one two three with nothing across and as we go to the ninth it's the Expos six.
- 2:28:50The Cubs three.
- 2:28:53Well for late shooters in let's review the scoring in this ball game.
- 2:28:57The Montreal Expos took a one to nothing lead in the first inning.
- 2:29:00Adolfo Phillips the leadoff man single stole second.
- 2:29:04Went to third when the throw by Randy Hundley to the bag was wild and he scored on a single by Bob Bailey.
- 2:29:11The Cubs tied it up with one run in the second inning when Willie Smith homered over the left field fence into the bleacher seat.
- 2:29:18Then the Expos really went to town in their half of the fifth inning.
- 2:29:23Phillips let off with a walk. Rusty Stobb single.
- 2:29:29Moving Phillips to third. Gary Sutherland hit a sacrifice fly and Phillips came in to score.
- 2:29:35Bob Bailey hit a home run with Stobb and Phillips aboard.
- 2:29:41With Stobb and Phillips aboard. Wine was the one who came in on the sacrifice fly.
- 2:29:46And the Expos scored four runs in that half of the fifth inning.
- 2:29:51The Cubs came back in their half of the fifth with a pair of runs and they got it this way.
- 2:30:02We'll recap more of that ball game a little later on as we are going into the ninth inning.
- 2:30:08The top half of the ninth inning and we have a new pitcher on the hill for the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:30:13Dick Selma right hander coming on now to pitch the ninth inning for Chicago.
- 2:30:18Dick Selma. He'll face Bobby Wine.
- 2:30:21The pitcher Don Shaw and Adolfo Phillips here in the ninth. The Expos leading six to three.
- 2:30:27The first pitch to Bobby is high and outside ball one. Wine is two for three with a couple of doubles and a run scored.
- 2:30:33Boy he started that rally off for the Expos in the fifth inning with a double and scored on that single by Rusty Stobb.
- 2:30:42Selma looks down to Hundley.
- 2:30:46The pitch high outside again ball two. Two and nothing.
- 2:30:51Expos have hit that ball well today. They've out hit the Cubs nine to eight leading six to three here in the ninth.
- 2:30:59Selma's pitch taken for a strike. Two and one to Bobby Wine.
- 2:31:05Rich Nye the Chicago starter went four in a third innings.
- 2:31:11Next pitch is right across the knees for a strike called.
- 2:31:16Count levels of two and two.
- 2:31:22I guess the weatherman is wrong although it's dark and overcast he had called for rain that should have started 45 minutes ago if he was right.
- 2:31:30It's low and outside a full count of Bobby Wine now three and two but he wasn't right and we've got a good chance to get two in now.
- 2:31:41Wine swings and misses strike three. Bobby goes down swinging and Selma logs a strikeout.
- 2:31:49That brings the pitcher Don Shaw to the plate. Don went down swinging.
- 2:31:55In the sixth inning.
- 2:32:03Left hand hitter.
- 2:32:05Selma deals and here's a bouncer to Santo at third. Up with it the throw to Banks retires Shaw two away.
- 2:32:15The Expos beginning was the fifth four runs on three hits.
- 2:32:21Bobby started it with his double.
- 2:32:25Phillips walked rusty stock of A's driving in Wine.
- 2:32:29The winner to sacrifice Hivett's to Phillips.
- 2:32:33Bailey home run.
- 2:32:37The home run is off Abernathy.
- 2:32:41Adolf Olbis one for three with a walk and two runs scored.
- 2:32:47The pitch is low ball.
- 2:32:54Selma deals a fastball for a strike one ball one strike.
- 2:32:58You'll have a chance to meet the new members of the Expos team including Adolf O. Phillips tomorrow at 1230 Plasville Marie in downtown Montreal.
- 2:33:08So we hope there'll be a lot of fans out there.
- 2:33:11Make the newcomers as welcome as we did those who started with the club at the beginning of the year. A breaking ball that failed Selma.
- 2:33:19Takes the count of two and one.
- 2:33:22Two outs and nobody on here in the top of the ninth.
- 2:33:25Phillips went with one high into the air down the left field line. It goes foul.
- 2:33:31Out of play.
- 2:33:34The count is two and two.
- 2:33:37And tomorrow night at eight oh five the bell rings on the home stand. Cardinals in the Expos.
- 2:33:45The first of four games.
- 2:33:51Phillips swings pops this one up right around the plate.
- 2:33:54Hundley off of the mask waiting left side of the plate. He's got it.
- 2:34:02Selma put the side down one two three.
- 2:34:07Nothing across in the top of the ninth. We go to the bottom of the ninth. Montreal six comes three.
- 2:34:13And just to straighten out that fifth inning in our recap.
- 2:34:16Here's how the Expos got their runs. Bobby Wine let off with a double.
- 2:34:21Gordon a single by Rusty Stubb.
- 2:34:23Phillips has followed with a walk. Stubb and Phillips came in on the home run by Bob Bailey his first of the afternoon.
- 2:34:30That's how the Expos picked up their run in the fifth inning.
- 2:34:34They added another run in the eighth inning on a home run by Bob Bailey.
- 2:34:38The Cubs picked up their runs in the fifth inning.
- 2:34:41Don Kessinger grounded out but Paul Popovich walked Billy Williams single.
- 2:34:46Santos single in a run bringing in Popovich. Ernie Banks single in another run bringing in Billy Williams.
- 2:34:53So that's the story on this ballgame so far.
- 2:34:56It is six to three for the Expos over the Cubs as we go into the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:35:03It's been a long road trip but the Expos are really looking good toward the end of this road trip.
- 2:35:09They have posted six victories on the road and are not far from another one this afternoon.
- 2:35:17So as we go into the bottom half of the ninth inning the Nervy Ninth the first man up for the Cubs
- 2:35:24will be their leadoff man Don Kessinger.
- 2:35:28Don Shaw in the leaf of Gary Weslowski pitching well for the Expos.
- 2:35:33Take it away Dave.
- 2:35:35Well the top of the order has been a little bit of trouble here for the Expos.
- 2:35:40Only two hits among the first three men in the order.
- 2:35:42One by Kessinger and one by Williams but a total of four walks and two of the three runs short.
- 2:35:51Don Shaw has got to deal with Kessinger popping up to Williams.
- 2:35:55First pitch to Kessinger was a ball.
- 2:35:57Don is ready.
- 2:35:59He deals.
- 2:36:00Kessinger takes it low.
- 2:36:01Ball two.
- 2:36:02Two and nothing.
- 2:36:03Kessinger walked in the first inning.
- 2:36:05Flied to center in the second.
- 2:36:06Grounded out in the fifth.
- 2:36:07Got his base hit in the sixth.
- 2:36:09He was stranded there in the sixth.
- 2:36:13Switch hitter batting right against the left-hander Shaw.
- 2:36:15The 2-0 pitch taken for the strike.
- 2:36:21Count is two and one.
- 2:36:24They'll probably shorten the time between games a little bit.
- 2:36:27Speed that second one along as quickly as they can.
- 2:36:32Here's the 2-1.
- 2:36:34Strike two.
- 2:36:35A breaking ball hit the inside corner.
- 2:36:37Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:36:52Don is ready.
- 2:36:53He delivers.
- 2:36:54Pitch is cut on right back to Shaw.
- 2:36:56He had to reach to his left.
