- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, welcome to Corano this morning.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad you could be here this morning or whenever you're listening to it.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: But let's pray and ask God to bless our time together.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Father, we thank you so much for what we are going to see today and the um just the amazing way that you worked in the Lord Jesus.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Might you give us eyes to see and a heart to comprehend what you have done?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And we pray these things in Jesus' name and for his sake and his kingdom.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Nothing, no thing, nothing is more important in our Christian experience than understanding who Jesus is.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: His life, his character, his ministry, his work on the cross, his resurrection, his ascension are all supremely foundational to our faith and should be foundational to our own spiritual lives.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Amazingly, God gave us not one, but four biographies of the most important person who has ever lived.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: You might have wondered, like I did, why there are four Gospels accounts of the life of Jesus in the New Testament.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Why there are four separate accounts of his life?
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Why is that?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Why did God do that?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Well, first of all, a biography of a famous person is not really complete until that person's life has been examined by their spouse, by their parents, by their coworkers, by their friends, by their mentors.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: We get a better picture of that person when all of those things are taken into account.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: All those people would know that person in a different and specific way based on their relationship to them.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Altogether, we get a much better picture of who that person really was.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: The same is true with the Gospels.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Each gospel writer saw and communicated what they had seen and knew of Christ from different viewpoints.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite verses is John 21, 21, 25.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And it says, Jesus did many other things as well.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: There are not enough books to contain all that Jesus did or does or will do.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: That's why it is imperative that as you are reading through the Gospels in a couple of weeks, when you start, that you are aware of these truths, that they are absolutely foundational, and you have the opportunity coming up to see what those four gospels tell us about Jesus Christ.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Each human author had a specific emphasis.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Matthew's gospel is written to the Jews.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Matthew gives us the assurance that Jesus is indeed the fulfillment of all Old Testament prophecy.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And because of that, because that's his emphasis, is the Jews, Matthew reveals Jesus as the Messiah, the one who had been promised to be the forgiveness of sins.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Because of that emphasis, Matthew, the book of Matthew, is full of Old Testament prophetic passages about the coming Messiah, because that's who he's writing to.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: It's who he's trying to convince that Jesus was truly the one that had been prophesied.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Matthew pictures Jesus as the king of the Jews, the Messiah.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: The book of Matthew was written between 70 and 80 A.D.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Mark's Gospel is written to the Christians in Rome and it pictures Jesus as the suffering servant.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: John Mark, who is the writer of the Gospel of Mark, wrote between 50 and 70 A.D.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: The ministry of Jesus is revealed with vivid detail, and the messages of his teaching are presented more through what he did than what he said.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Mark is thought to be the first gospel written.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: The overriding theme of the Gospel of Mark is to show that Jesus came to serve even to the point of death.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Luke is written to a Greek audience and the Gentile world.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Luke pictures Jesus as the Son of Man showing his humanity.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Luke was written between 59 to 63 AD.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: The book of Luke was written to give a reliable and precise record of the history of Jesus Christ's life.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Not only as a historian, but also as a physician, Luke paid close attention to every detail, including the dates and the events that happened throughout the life of Christ.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: The theme that is emphasized in the Gospel of Luke is his perfection as a human.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Jesus was the perfect man who came and lived the perfect life and gave the perfect sacrifice for sin, thus being the perfect savior for the world.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Dr.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Luke was a Greek and he is the only Gentile Christian writer in the New Testament.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: John is written to a universal audience and pictures Jesus as the divine Son of God.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: John wrote this book between 80 and 95 AD.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: The Gospel of John was written to prove that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: As an eyewitness to the love and the power that Jesus displayed, John gives an up close and in and personal look at Christ's identity, his life, what he did.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: He shows us that Jesus, though fully God, came in the flesh to distinctly and accurately reveal God.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: And that Christ is the source of eternal life to all who believe in him.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: We see that in John 3.16, right?
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: John is the son of Zebedee, and he and his brother James are called the sons of thunder.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: How gracious of God to give us four distinct views of Jesus.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Today we will look at Jesus' ministry, his temptation, his calling of the disciples, his miracles, and his teaching styles.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: That's a lot to cover.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And obviously, we cannot cover all of it.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: We're just going to take bits and pieces.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: But first, his ministry.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Jesus starts his ministry with his baptism.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: This point is important.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: John the Baptist was doing John the John the Baptism John the Baptist was doing and working at was bringing people into an identity that is not connected to their Jewishness, but rather to their repentance.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: What John the Baptist was doing was calling people to repentance.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And John says, but John tried to detear him, saying, I need to be baptized by you.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Sorry, let me go back.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I need to be baptized by you.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: And you come to me.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Jesus replied, Let it be so.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: It is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: As soon as Jesus was baptized and came out of the water, heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and landing on him, and a voice from heaven said, This is my son, whom I love, in him I am well pleased.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: So Jesus comes to the river, and John basically says, Whoa, I need to be baptized by you, but you come to be baptized by me.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: John makes it crystal clear that Jesus did not need this baptism of repentance.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: He hasn't done any sin.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: He hasn't done anything wrong.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: So why are you here?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: John basically wants to know.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Have you ever wondered why Jesus was baptized?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: It's kind of an interesting question.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Jesus gives one answer to fulfill all righteousness.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: That's his answer.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: John Piper says, participating in a baptism of repentance, even though he had no sins to repent of, is part of what shows that the righteousness he wanted to fulfill was the righteousness required not of himself, but of every sinful man.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: All the righteousness that would be required of men before the court of God, Jesus performed.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: That makes it so much more clear.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Why he came, he came for us.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: He came, his baptism was to was to fulfill all righteousness.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: So cool.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Next we see Jesus' temptation with Satan.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: It seems likely that Jesus moves into the temptation right after his baptism.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And if that is true, then he has already been fasting for 40 days at the time of his baptism.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: If not, then that temptation took place 40 days after the baptism.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Either way, either way, Jesus was in a completely depleted state and susceptible to temptation when the temptation by Satan came.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Matthew 4, 1 through 11.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: The tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Jesus answered, It is written, Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down, for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Jesus answered him, It is also written, Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: All this I will give you, he said, if you will bow down and worship me.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan, for it is written, Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Notice first that Jesus was led by the Spirit of God into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: This was the plan.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: This was the will of God for Jesus to begin his ministry with this challenge.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And that it was not the devil's work doing.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: This is God's will leading him.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Satan takes advantage of it, but it was God's doing.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: And what does that remind us of?
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: It reminds us of Job and his testing by Satan.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Jesus had been fasting for 40 days, which is significant.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: It's significant because Moses and Elijah, two of God's most significant prophets and servants in the Old Testament, also fasted 40 days and nights.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Jesus's first, Jesus' fast would have connected him with Moses and Elijah in Matthew's Jewish listeners of his gospel.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And who appeared with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration?
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Moses and Elijah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: This 40-day fast would have also prepared him spiritually for the temptation that was to come.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: It's very important for us to realize that Jesus started his ministry with a significant time of prayer and fasting.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: He was prepared for what the enemy was going to do.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Jesus led by example, because it's a perfect example for us.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Sonic Light says the Greek word tempted, periozo, or however you say that, means to test, either in a good or bad sense.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: God's objective here might have been to demonstrate the character of his son by exposing him to Satan's tests.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: The devil could tempt Jesus with every power he had, but he would not succeed.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: It also shows us that Satan does have some authority in this world that has been given him by God.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And again, that reminds us of Job.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Satan attacked Jesus where he was most, when he was most physically and spiritually vulnerable.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: And that shows us that Satan loves to attack all of us where and when we are most vulnerable.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: We can count on it.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: It so often takes us by surprise, but it should not take us by surprise.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: When we're sick, when we're depleted, when our energy is depleted, we can bank on the enemies messing with us.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: So put that in your brain.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: And the next time you're weak and vulnerable, say, Lord, protect me, because I'm feeling so weak and I need your protection now more than ever.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Satan, as the serpent in the garden, was really successful in getting Adam and Eve to sin, but he was not able to defeat the Son of God right here in the desert.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Praise the Lord.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: During Jesus' temptation, Satan uses the supernatural to find Jesus in the desert.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: And then to transport Jesus to the top of the temple in Jerusalem.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And then he takes him to a high mountain.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And with each successive temptation, the loftiness of what Satan is offering increases as well, as does the height from which he is offering it.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: I think it's possible and probable that Satan knew at all times where Jesus was while he was on this earth.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: One of the films, I think it was the The Passion of the Christ, I think is the one that it shows Satan shadowing Jesus, especially at the crucifixion.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: And that really hit me when I watched that movie.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: I thought that makes total sense that Satan would just follow him around and dog his steps.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: After the temptation, we read how Jesus commands Satan to leave him, and he does because he has to.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Then angels came and ministered to Jesus.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: One commentary said, the enemy left as a defeated challenger, but the angels of God came to Jesus and served him in ways that we cannot quite imagine.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: But we can imagine that they must have affirmed Jesus with comfort, with food, with encouragement, that he had done everything well and had at and had won this battle over Satan.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Luke 4 14.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: He taught in their synagogues and everyone praised him.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Luke 4 1 said Jesus was full of the Spirit and led by the Spirit.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: And now in verse 14, he has the power of the Spirit.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: The Spirit empowered and enabled Jesus in his words and deeds throughout his whole ministry.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: After this, Jesus goes back to Nazareth.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: He goes to the synagogue and is invited to read the scriptures, and the scroll is handed to him.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: And it just so happens that it is the prophet Isaiah.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying, Today.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: How amazing.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine the emotion of that moment for him?
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: He has waited for all of human history to make that proclamation.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: It's so amazing.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: After these events, right after these events, we see Jesus calling a foot few good men to follow him.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: These men and these women who are called will eventually change the world, but they don't know that yet.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Sorry, let me go back.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Listen to John 1, 35 through 42.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: And again, these are familiar verses to you.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: The next day, John, which is John the Baptist, was there again with two of his disciples.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, Behold, the Lamb of God.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, What do you want?
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: They said, Rabbi, where are you staying?
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Come, he replied, and you will see.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: So they went and saw where he was staying and spent that day with him.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Andrew, Simon's Simon Peter, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who had heard what Jesus had said and who followed Jesus.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: The first thing Andrew did was to bring his brother Simon and tell him, We have found the Messiah.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: That is the Christ.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: And he brought him to Jesus.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon, son of John.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: You will be called Cephas, which when translated is Peter.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Andrew was one of the one of John the Baptist's disciples who followed Jesus.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And commentaries agree that John, the Apostle John, was the other one who left John the Baptist and followed Jesus.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So it was Andrew and John.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: I love what Bible knowledge commentary says about Andrew.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: In bringing his brother Simon Peter to Christ, no man did the church a greater service than Andrew.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Andrew appeared two more times in John's Gospel, and both times he is bringing someone to Jesus.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Don't you love it?
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Simon Peter was the next to follow Jesus.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: After Andrew and John.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: When Jesus looked at Peter, he knew what he would be and what he would become.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: And so he renamed him according to his position that he would hold in the church.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Peter is the Greek translation of Cephas, and Cephas means rock.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Jesus knew that Peter would be the strong rock that the early church could count on to hold it secure.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, he was impetuous, and yes, he was, you know, had quite the personality, but God saw what he would become.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: John 1, 43 through 50.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Finding Philip, he said to him, Follow me.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was also from the town of Betheda.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Philip found Nathanael and told him, We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and about whom the prophets also wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Nazareth, can anything good come from there?
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Nathanael asked.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Come and see, said Philip.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: When Jesus saw Nathaniel approaching, he said of him, Here is a true Israelite in whom there is nothing false.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: How do you know me?
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Nathanael asked.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Jesus answered, I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Nathaniel declared, Rabbi, you are.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Are the Son of God.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: You are the King of Israel.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Jesus said, You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree?
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: You will see greater things than that.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Jesus gathers Philip to himself by simply meeting him on the street and inviting him to follow.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Peter and Andrew, who believed that Jesus was the one Moses and the prophets had declared would be coming, and wrote about influences Philip.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Philip influences Nathaniel by inviting him to come and see.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: We see the threads of the gospel starting right there, and it's only the first few followers.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Jesus had that kind of impact on people.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: He invited them to come and they came and they were blown away by what they saw in him.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Philip's simple come and see is a pattern that we can still use when talking to people.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Come and check him out and see if he is the one.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And I love Jesus' affirmation of Nathaniel in verse 47.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Here's a true Israelite in whom there's nothing false.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: We hear grace and affirmation from Jesus as he calls each of these men.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: He sees their potential and he knows their futures.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: He knows exactly what he is going to do with them.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: And they may not look like much now, and I'm sure they didn't.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: But Jesus knows who they will become and how they will impact the world in the not so distant future from then.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: It reminds me of 1 Corinthians 1, 26 through 29.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Brothers, think of what you were when you were called.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were influential, not many were of noble birth.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: That's what these men were.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: So that they would, it would be very, very, very clear to them that their success was not because of their efforts and their strength and their ability, but because of his.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: When Jesus chose these men, there were no surprises.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: There were no surprises.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: There are still no surprises.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: I'm as amazed as I'm sure the disciples were.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Of the 12 disciples, John and James and Peter formed that inner circle chosen by Jesus to become his closest companions.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: They had that exclusive privilege of witnessing and testifying about the events of Jesus' life like none of the others experienced.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Now let's look at Jesus' first miracle.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: His first miracle was turning water into wine.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: John chapter 2, verse 1 through 11.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: On the third day of a wet on the third day, a wedding took place in Cana in Galilee.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, They have no more wine.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: What are we gonna do?
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Jesus replied, Dear woman, why do you involve me?
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: My time is not yet come.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used for the ceremonial washing, each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Jesus said to the servants, Fill the jars with water.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: So they filled them to the brim.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Then Jesus told them, Now draw some of it out and take it to the master of the banquet.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: They did so.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had turned into wine.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, Everyone who brings out the choice, everyone brings out the choice wine first, and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: But you have saved saved the best till now.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: This this, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: This wedding would have been a community celebration, which shows us that Jesus participated in the normal affairs of life.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: He goes to this wedding.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Why do we think, what would have made her think that?
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe Jesus had already done a few little miracles.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: But she knew that the groom would look be looked on unfavorably and embarrassed by running out of something as essential as the wine.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: She clearly expects him to do something, for she tells the servants, do whatever he tells you.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Mary accepted his his hum, accepted that statement humbly, and she didn't nag him.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: She did, however, urge the servants to cooperate with him just in case he decided to do something about it.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Typical mother.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: She didn't know or understand what he would do, but she had confidence in his compassion and in his ability.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Why were there jars sitting there?
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Well, when the guests showed up to the wedding, they would have their feet washed with those with that water.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: So that's why they're standing there empty.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: Each jar held between 20 and 30 gallons, and Jesus instructs them to fill the jars with the water, and immediately it turns into fine quality wine.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Only a few of them.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Mary and and included, and the servants knew that water had gone in, but that wine had come out.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: And the only thing that accounted for the change was Jesus' command.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: That must have been some pretty perfect wine.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: The combined capacity of the jars would have been between 120 to 180 gallons of wine.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of wine.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: But Jesus's provision of a gift of wine may have prolonged this wedding feast for days and certainly saved the groom and his family from embarrassment.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: The real issue at the wedding feast was not that the wine ran out, but who replenished it.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: And Jesus, as the creator that he is, produced the best, as he always does whenever he creates.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: I like what Bible Knowledge commentary says about this passage.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: This his first miracle was a gracious indication of the joy which he provides by the Spirit.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: The sign points to Jesus as the word in the flesh, who is mighty creator.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Each year he turns water to wine in the agricultural and fermentation processes.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Here he simply did the process immediately.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: The 120 gallons of fine wine were his gift to the couple.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: How cool is that observation?
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: I love picturing Jesus enjoying his time with others in such a natural setting.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: I love how the chosen portrays that too, obviously, since I have all these pictures on these slides.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: The other miracles.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Jesus did so many miracles.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: He gave hearing to the deaf, sight to the blind, freedom to the captives, healed thousands, fed thousands, forgave sins, cast out demons, raised some from the dead, and proclaimed the kingdom of God.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: He did everything that pleased God.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Chronologically, there were 40 separate miracles that Jesus performed that impacted thousands and thousands of people.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Sometimes when surrounded by a large group of people, the Bible simply states, and he healed them all.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: He just went ahead and healed them all.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: I so wish we could spend all of our time today looking at each of those miracles in depth.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: There are so many rich lessons in each one of them.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: So as you are reading through, if something grabs your heart about one of them, dig deeper into it and study it a little bit more and try to see what God wants you to understand about that.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: And next we need to look at Jesus' teaching styles.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: He was the master teacher.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: What he did and how he taught are really important.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: So let's look at the characteristics of Jesus' teaching.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: And some of what I will be sharing is from Bob Deffenbaugh from Bible.org.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: In the first style, we see Jesus is spontaneity.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: Spontaneity.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: The teaching of Jesus is almost entirely spontaneous.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: Spontaneous, but filled with knowledge and basically in his control.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Luke 9, 46.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Then he said to them, Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: For he who is least among you, he is the greatest.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Over and over in the Gospels, Jesus taught in response to situations which just arose spontaneously.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: The Sermon on the Mount was a spontaneous sermon given on the occasion of a large crowd who wanted to be taught.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: When Jesus was invited to the home of Simon the leper or the Pharisee, I'm sorry, Simon the Pharisee, his feet were not washed when he came in, but a woman comes in and washes his feet, who was known to be sinful.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Jesus used that opportunity to teach on the subject of forgiveness.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: It was a spontaneous thing that he controlled and then he would teach.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: How does that apply to us?
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: Teaching biblical truth should be a response that relates to our day-to-day circumstances in life, especially if we have small children or grandchildren.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: We should do this with everyone, actually, though.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: But in order for us to teach spontaneously, we have to be thinking biblically.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: We have to know the word.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: And in order to teach the word spontaneously, we've got to know it.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: In the Old Testament, God told the Israelites these words.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: He said, And these words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart, and you shall teach them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: That's Deuteronomy 6, 6 through 9.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: That is exactly what Jesus is doing, demonstrating, and fulfilling.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: That's exactly how he did that spontaneity.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: The next style we see is adaptability.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: In John 4, Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well, and he presented the gospel in terms that were relational to her, her and her culture, and her background and her understanding.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: She sought water and Jesus spoke of living water.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: In John chapter 3, Jesus is sought out by Nicodemus during the night.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: He was a religious leader and a teacher.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: He spoke to Nicodemus in an entirely different way than he did the woman at the well, because Jesus knew his audience and he adapted his message to his audience.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: How does that apply to us?
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: In order for us to communicate truth in an adaptable way, we have to know the truth well enough to speak the truth.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: The next thing that we see is sensitivity and selectivity.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: The Lord Jesus was selective in terms of time.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: He had many things to teach his followers, but he didn't give it to them all at once.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: He left a lot unsaid.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: Mark 33, 433.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: And with many such parables, he was speaking to them as they were able to hear.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: He knew what they could handle and he knew what they couldn't handle.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: He knew his audience.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Near the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus said to his disciples in John 16, 12, I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: He couldn't tell them everything, but he told them what they needed to know.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: And that really was enough at that moment.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: How does that apply to us?
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: When we are trying to help someone and share scriptural truth with someone, we need to be patient with them and we need to understand that it is never God's intention to overwhelm them.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: I am constantly telling women that I counsel with that.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: I tell them that.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: And they understand that and appreciate that it's a slow process.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: By talking and teaching privately, excuse me, with the disciples, Jesus was able to explain certain truths that he was not going to share with the rest of the people.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: That built anticipation, it built leadership skills in the disciples.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: They knew that they had that inner knowledge and it and it helped them with the responsibilities that they had.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: He was training them to take over when he left.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: So it was very important.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: The next thing we see is simplicity.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Jesus spoke in the simplest language, so simple that even a child could not miss what Jesus was saying and meaning.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: The Pharisees, in contrast, prided themselves in their deep theological discussions that would drag on for hours and hours and hours.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: We know that Jesus had the ability to engage in that kind of discussion because that's exactly what he's doing in the temple at age 12 when his parents come back for him.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: But he didn't do that in his ministry.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: Luke 2, 47 says, everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: He knew how to go deep, but he didn't do it very often.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Why was he making it so simple?
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: Because we still have to start somewhere.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: We all have to start somewhere.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Jesus was putting all the puzzle pieces out on the table.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: And after his ascension, the disciples started putting them together and getting a much better picture of who Jesus was.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: He kept it simple, but the picture that they caught and proclaimed was Jesus, the Son of God, the Son of Man.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: How does that apply to us?
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: We need to keep our teaching and our communication simple, but at the same time understand the deeper truths of Scripture.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: We do.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: We need to understand it, but then we need to make it simple.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: Just because Jesus kept it simple didn't mean he didn't know it.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: And the same is true for us.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: We see too that his his teaching had authority.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Jesus' words had authority that the other religious leaders did not have.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: If we could boil everything down to this one to one word, it would be authority.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Matthew 7.28.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: When Jesus was finished, when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching because he taught as one who had authority and not as their as their teachers of the law.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Matthew 9.26 says, but I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: And so he said to the paralyzed man, Get up and take your mat and go home.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Jesus used the old scriptures in light of their original meaning and intent, but when he spoke them, they rang out with authority.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: And then he clears out the temple.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: How does that apply to us?
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: We too can communicate with authority when we know scripture.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: But we have to know scripture, we have to know truth.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: When you wrestle with the truth, and that truth works its way down into the depths of your being, it will ring with authority.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: What you say will ring with authority.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: The next thing we see is originality.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: The teaching method of the scribes and the Pharisees must have been dull and dry and boring when they spoke and when they quoted their ancient traditions.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Jesus was not conformed, conformed, confined to those traditions of the Pharisees.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: He didn't have that.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: Jesus taught much by his deeds.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: He underscored major claims by miraculous signs.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: He not only claimed to be the resurrection in the life, he raised the dead.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: When Jesus taught, things happened.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: His points were punctuated by a well-told story, a lifelike illustration or a sign.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: His method of teaching, in his method of teaching, Jesus was original.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: He was unique.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: In the content of his messages, Jesus was also original.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, You have heard, but I say.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: You've heard this, but here's what I say.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: And last we see that the teaching, that Jesus' teaching style was practical.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: Whenever Jesus taught a truth or a principle, he always brought it down to the bottom shelf of personal application.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Personal application.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: If truth is going to impact a life for change, it has to be applied.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: And applied truth changes people.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: I can't emphasize this point enough because applied truth completely changed my life.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: Completely changed my life.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: And I see applied truth change people's lives all the time.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: All the time.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: As you read through the Gospels, realize that it is more than just information you are receiving.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: It is the life of Christ.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: And it is truth.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: Let these truths of Christ and who he is and what he did work its way into the depths of your being.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Take it all in.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: Make it personal to you.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: Apply it to your life.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: Ask God how you do that and then stand in awe of what he shows you.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: God's word is not given merely to inform, but to transform us.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: It speaks to men and women and children right where they are.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: But it also demands that we respond to that truth.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: I love, love this quote by Bob Deffenbaugh.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: Jesus Christ is the focal point of all history.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: He is the fulfillment of all new Old Testament hopes.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: He is the source of all New Testament revelation and expectation.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: He is all in all.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: To study the life of Christ is to study the fountainhead of all New Testament revelation.
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: And when we apply what we learn about Christ to our lives, we are changed by it.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: Can I hear an amen?
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: Lord Jesus, thank you so much.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: You were so unique.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: You were so different than anything people had ever heard and seen and witnessed.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: And you still are.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: You still have that power.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: You still are that wonderful Savior.
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: And we are in awe of you.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: You are great and you are awesome and glorious.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: And we praise you and thank you.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: Thank you for all you are, all you do, all you are going to do.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: Give us eyes to see and a heart to rejoice in who you are.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray this.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: I will see you next time.
