Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hi, everybody, Welcome the Birds Weekly, presented by the Inside
- 0:13the Birds Network. That man, right, there's Hall of Famer.
- 0:15Raid didn't drum, Derek Gunn?
- 0:16Speaker 2: All right?
- 0:17Speaker 1: Eagles are putting the Dallas Cowboys behind them. They are
- 0:19now looking ahead to their next opponent, the Super Bowl
- 0:22runner up, the Kansas City Chiefs. And oh my goodness,
- 0:25the Chiefs have something to prove because they are licking
- 0:29their wounds after losing their season opener to the Los
- 0:32Angeles Chargers twenty seven to twenty one. Ray, I watched
- 0:36that game. I'm assuming you watch some of it, if
- 0:38not all of it. Were you a little bit shot
- 0:40the way that game turned itself out? Because basically Kansas
- 0:44City hadn't beaten, had not lost to the Chargers since
- 0:49what twenty twenty one, something like that.
- 0:53Speaker 2: New day, New era, I guess in the AFC West.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Yeah, the Chiefs just owned Chargers, and I don't know,
- 1:03I guess just you just I just assumed that was
- 1:06gonna happen again, you know, I mean, I forget the
- 1:09points spread.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I mean, the Chiefs always beat the Chargers, and.
- 1:12Speaker 3: You know, it doesn't matter if they're playing them in
- 1:14Kansas City, Arrowhead, if they're playing them in La, if
- 1:17you're playing them in San Diego, or if they're playing
- 1:19them in Brazil. I didn't, you know, I don't think
- 1:22it's going to matter. It's the Chiefs, if the Chargers,
- 1:24the Chiefs are going to find a way to win.
- 1:26The way the game went down, yeah, I was surprised.
- 1:28I was surprised. Now, obviously the Chiefs are a little
- 1:33short handed offensively. You know, Rice is suspended for six games.
- 1:38He's their best and you know, and Worthy is their
- 1:42best receiver probably, and he goes out with an injury,
- 1:45early shoulder injury. Yeah, and so that now, all of
- 1:48a sudden, you still got Patrick Mahomes. But who's he
- 1:51throwing the ball to other than Kelsey. So the game
- 1:55was a little different in that respect. And honestly, in
- 1:59the second half it looked to me like the Chiefs
- 2:01are coming on, and I thought, you know, they're going
- 2:03to find a way to win this thing. But at
- 2:05the end, you know, the Chargers put together that last
- 2:10drive where they just took the ball and they just
- 2:12kept it away and put the game away.
- 2:14Speaker 4: And you know, that's that's about as good a game as.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I've seen Herbert play. I thought Herbert was really really good,
- 2:21and the way the Chargers attacked the Chiefs, I think
- 2:24it sort of gives the Eagles a lot to study
- 2:26going into that game next week, because what you saw
- 2:30was Herbert with all of those quick throws, short throws,
- 2:33you know, get the ball out of their hands in
- 2:35a hurry. I mean, the Chiefs just couldn't deal with that.
- 2:38I mean their secondary was not good, their safety play
- 2:41was terrible, and the quick throw ban bing bing bang
- 2:46looked like you could do that against them all day.
- 2:48Speaker 4: And it seems to me that that's if the Eagles
- 2:51have that.
- 2:51Speaker 3: It looked like the Chiefs that the Chargers kind of
- 2:54laid that blueprint out there for the Eagles, and I
- 2:56expect the Eagles to come into them and and have
- 2:59that kind of a game. I think that that I
- 3:01think I could see Hurts spreading the ball around, you know,
- 3:04getting a J. Brown involved like early and often, and
- 3:08Smith too, and having a pretty big game throwing the ball.
- 3:12Because the chief secondary. We talk a lot about the
- 3:14Eagles secondary having some problems. I think what you saw
- 3:17that what you saw on Friday night was the chief
- 3:19secondary's got their issues too.
- 3:22Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I think what what Justin Herbert did, was he mahomes
- 3:28the Kansas City defense that last defining play where he
- 3:31took off and ran for the first down to seal
- 3:33the win. I think that's a maturation process in him
- 3:36as well. His decision making number one, he was pinpoint
- 3:39accurate throughout the course of the game. You're right, lightning
- 3:42quick release the way Mahomes usually has a lightning quick release,
- 3:46and his ability to scramble to by time or to
- 3:48run if he had to. And I don't know if
- 3:50the Kansas City defense was ready for that version of
- 3:53Justin Herbert.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I don't think they were. And you know,
- 3:59Steve Spagnola, the defensive corner in Kansas City, is really
- 4:03one of the best in terms of adjusting within the
- 4:06game to what's happening within the game, and Herbert.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Managed to stay one step ahead of him all the way.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I mean, right down to that last possession that really
- 4:16put the game away, and then of course that out
- 4:18of the pocket scramble get that last first down where
- 4:21they could just run out the clock. Was you know,
- 4:24that was a big, big step forward game for Herbert.
- 4:27You know, I mean he's been in a league a
- 4:29while now, he's put up some numbers. Everybody loves his talent.
- 4:32I do too. I mean, he's a tremendously talented kid,
- 4:36but he needs to have that kind of game. He
- 4:40needs to have that kind of season to step up
- 4:42among the elite guys because I think he has that
- 4:44kind of talent and that was a very impressive performance
- 4:49for him. And to win that game against a team
- 4:52that they have had no luck with for years is
- 4:55a great way for the Chargers to start this season.
- 4:57I mean, going into the season, Gunner, I don't know
- 4:59what you think one of the Chargers. I didn't have
- 5:01particularly high hopes for them. I neither, you know. I thought,
- 5:04you know, I could they win ten games, yeah, maybe
- 5:06get to the playoffs. Yeah, but there's is there a
- 5:09feeling there that you know, they could play with the Baltimore's,
- 5:12the Buffalo's, the Chiefs like in a big game. I
- 5:15wasn't feeling it. You know. After what we saw on
- 5:17Friday night, maybe we got to start thinking about that.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Well.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I look at that that that Chargers defense. They are fast,
- 5:24and man do they laid a lumber when they hit.
- 5:27You know, Derwin James is the Kamakaze pilot you know,
- 5:31and and you know, one of the hardest hitting guys
- 5:33on the back end of a defense, and they just
- 5:35flew to the ball. And boy did they attack Patrick Mahomes.
- 5:38It was similar almost to what the Eagles did to
- 5:40him in the Super Bowl. They kept coming, kept coming,
- 5:43forcing them off his spot, making him throw the ball
- 5:45early when he wanted to. And if I'm the Eagles,
- 5:48I'm looking at this blueprint. Hey, Kansas Basically the Chargers
- 5:52did what we did, we do the same.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Because you know, Kansas City is still built.
- 5:56Speaker 1: They have one of the better offensive lines in the
- 5:58National Football League. I don't think it really showed in
- 6:01this game because one of the things that really stuck
- 6:04out raised Kansas City couldn't run the football outside of
- 6:08a home scrambling. They could not run the football.
- 6:11Speaker 4: No, No, they couldn't.
- 6:13Speaker 3: They couldn't. And you know we saw I mean, this
- 6:16is funny to talk about this for a team that
- 6:17was fifteen to two last year, but they were even
- 6:22going into the Super Bowl, I had real questions about
- 6:25how good their offensive line was, you know, And I
- 6:27thought that that, to me, was why I thought the
- 6:29Eagles had a real chance to win that game. Was
- 6:32I thought the Eagles front was going to be way
- 6:34better than Kansas City's ability to.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Block it, and that was how it turned out.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And in the off season when he saw the moves
- 6:41that the Chiefs made, a lot of them were addressing
- 6:44the offensive line, and you know, Andy felt like, I
- 6:47got to get better up there to let my homes
- 6:50and my playmakers do their thing. And they brought some
- 6:54new guys in, they implemented some new things in the system,
- 6:58and there was a lot of talk this offseason, isn't
- 7:00it Oh yeah, the offensive line, Yeah, we had some issues,
- 7:02but we got it shoring up. Now. I don't know,
- 7:05after seeing what we saw on Friday night, I think
- 7:07they still have issues on the offensive line. And there's
- 7:09one thing, if there's one truism in pro football, I mean,
- 7:12you can have a great quarterback and there is no question.
- 7:17Nobody got any question off had the Patrick Mahomes a
- 7:19great player, great quarterback. But you saw what you saw
- 7:24what happened in the Super Bowl, and to some degree,
- 7:26you just kind of saw what happened on Friday night
- 7:28that if he if the rest of the offense doesn't
- 7:30function around him, it's very hard for him to be
- 7:33the quarterback that we've all known him to be.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You know, I know it's only a one game sample,
- 7:38and I don't I don't like to make too much
- 7:41of a season opening game, you know, I always we
- 7:43always try to make definitive decisions after teams have played
- 7:46three four games, you give, that's when you get a
- 7:49true feel for what this team is going to be
- 7:51and what it isn't isn't going to be. But I
- 7:54go back to the super Bowl against the Eagles and
- 7:56looking at what the Chargers duplicated in a lot of
- 8:00ways defensively at Kansas City's offense. Do you think teams
- 8:04are finally catching up to what Kansas City does?
- 8:11Speaker 4: Possibly?
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah, possibly, I think that it's more basic than that.
- 8:16I think it really is the quality of their offensive line.
- 8:20I think they have, Like I think I think Created
- 8:22Humphrey is a really good player. I think I think
- 8:25Create Humphrey their center, maybe the best center of the
- 8:28league if if I had to, if I had to
- 8:32rate them, If he's not number one, he's right there.
- 8:35I mean, he's that good. The other guys, I'm not
- 8:37so sure. And you see and you see that you
- 8:40certainly saw it in the Super Bowl and they saw
- 8:43it again on Friday night to an alarming degree. If
- 8:45you're a Chiefs fan, they've got the other players, and
- 8:49they've certainly got the quarterback. But if you don't win
- 8:54that battle at the line of scrimmage, if you don't
- 8:56win tackle to tackle, it's hard to win.
- 8:58Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:58Speaker 3: That's one thing that the Eagles, if that's one fundamental
- 9:02aspect of their philosophy, their organizational philosophy is building the trenches,
- 9:07win at the line of scrimmage. I mean, that's what
- 9:09they've been about, and that's one of the reasons why
- 9:11they've won so much. And the Chiefs right now, they've
- 9:14got Andy, they've got the system, they've got the quarterback,
- 9:17but right now they're not winning that battle at the
- 9:19line of scrimmage. And if that's the case, you know,
- 9:22I don't know if they're going to get back there.
- 9:24I mean, when I know, you looked as I looked,
- 9:27and over the last week for all of everybody's predictions,
- 9:31you know, in all media, TV, newspapers, print online, everybody's
- 9:35predicting who's going to go to the Super Bowl, and
- 9:38we all know where those predictions generally wind up.
- 9:41Speaker 4: But they kind of give you an idea of.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Where everybody stands in Week one, and I'll tell you
- 9:48I looked at all of them. There weren't a whole
- 9:51lot of people picking the Chiefs to go back this year.
- 9:54I mean the predominant teams in the AFC. Everybody people
- 9:58were picking Baltimore, where they were picking Buffalo, and a
- 10:03couple of teams here, a couple of people win Cincinnati,
- 10:05but not much with the Chiefs.
- 10:07Speaker 4: The feeling that was out there kind of was, you know,
- 10:10their time may have passed a little bit.
- 10:12Speaker 3: And they're gonna have to retool and come back, but
- 10:14right now they're not.
- 10:15Speaker 4: That team anymore. And we'll see.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I think that this week's game with the Eagles is
- 10:21going to tell us a lot. You know that if
- 10:23the Chiefs can still be the Chiefs, they're gonna show
- 10:27you next Sunday, because they sure as heck don't want
- 10:30to lose to the Eagles again. They sure as heck
- 10:32don't want to lose it Arrowhead again, and they sure
- 10:34as heck don't want to start the season oh and two.
- 10:37So whatever they are, whatever they can be, you're going
- 10:40to get their best shot next Sunday. And I think
- 10:42they'll tell you a lot about We all say it's
- 10:44gonna tell us a lot about the Eagles. It's gonna
- 10:46tell us a lot about the Chiefs too.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Well.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I look at I look at the Eagles against Kansas
- 10:50City in recent years, and the Eagles have owned Kansas
- 10:53City and the regular season, and of course they beat
- 10:55the brakes off them in the Super Bowl.
- 10:57Speaker 2: And I think there's some.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Psychological war going on here as well, because the Eagles
- 11:02are not afraid to go in and play at Arrowhead.
- 11:04That's one of the loudest stadiums in the National Football League,
- 11:08and the Eagles have gone and in and had the measure
- 11:09of success. They beat them on a neutral ground as well.
- 11:13They're not in fear Patrick Mahomes that I fully expect
- 11:16Vic Fangio to come after Patrick Mahomes, especially now we
- 11:19don't know the status.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Stuffs they have.
- 11:21Speaker 1: You're Worthy, and of course they're already down two receivers
- 11:24before Worthy went down. Now he's down with his shoulder injury.
- 11:27As we talked about. Right now, they can't run the football.
- 11:30So what is it going to be just Patrick Mahomes
- 11:32playing one on eleven at this point?
- 11:35Speaker 2: You know? So, I think the Eagles are in a
- 11:37good spot.
- 11:38Speaker 1: They're riding the high, beating the Dallas Cowboys at home
- 11:40and a season opener, and they're going into an environment,
- 11:43a very hostile environment that basically they don't fear because
- 11:47of the success they've had there in recent past years.
- 11:50Speaker 4: They shouldn't. And you're quite right about Arrowhead.
- 11:53Speaker 3: If anybody I know you've been the Arrowhead, Yeh, I've
- 11:57been the Arrowhead many times. I mean I went to
- 12:00Arrowhead when Lenn Dawson was still playing, So I've been.
- 12:04I've been to Arrowhead many times. And you're right. It
- 12:08is a tough place to play. It is loud, the
- 12:12crowd is rough. They generate a tremendous amount of noise
- 12:15in that building. Uh.
- 12:16Speaker 4: And it's a tough place to play. But the Eagles
- 12:18have proven that they can go in there play well.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And and you know, I think the Eagles have an
- 12:23advantage here in that you know that they're gonna have
- 12:26a little bit of rest. They played Thursday, they get
- 12:28a couple extra days. Uh. And the Chiefs are they
- 12:32they just flew to Brazil and just flew back and
- 12:36that takes a toll on you. I mean, last year
- 12:39the Eagles made that trip, they came home and lost
- 12:42a home game to a very average Atlanta team exactly.
- 12:46So I think, you know, I think that that's Ah,
- 12:48that wasn't that big a deal.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Oh yeah, ten.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Hours each way, No, I think it is, And I
- 12:53think so will that sap the Chiefs a little bit,
- 12:56Like I know, they have all the motivation in the
- 12:57world because again they're owing one, and they sure as
- 12:59held a want to be owing too. But I think
- 13:02that back and forth that's a problem. You know, I
- 13:05think that could be a problem. And the Eagles walk
- 13:08in the Arrowhead really with no fear because they've won
- 13:10there before. But I think it's going to be a
- 13:13real important game for both of these teams because it's
- 13:16it's a game where the Eagles can kind of make
- 13:17a statement about what happened in February was in an accident.
- 13:21We're going to come into your stadium and do it
- 13:23to you again. And the Chiefs feat need to prove
- 13:26to all the people have kind of starting to count
- 13:27them out a little bit that no, you know, we
- 13:30can still play with these guys and don't write us
- 13:32off just yet. So that's going to be a I mean,
- 13:35that's going to be a game that everybody's going to
- 13:36be watching, and I think it's a game that's going
- 13:38to tell us a lot well where both of these
- 13:40teams are headed.
- 13:41Speaker 2: All right, rad a moment of truth. Who you picking.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Chiefs or Eagles in Week number two of the National
- 13:48Football League.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I'm going to take the Eagles, partly for the reasons
- 13:52that we've just talked about. The Eagles tend to play
- 13:54well in Kansas City. I think it's going to be
- 13:56a little tough for the Chiefs coming off of this
- 13:58to Brazil trip, and based on what I saw with
- 14:02the Chiefs in the game against the Chargers. We talked
- 14:06about the Eagles having issues in their secondary I think
- 14:08the Chiefs have them too. And you know, I think
- 14:11the Eagles are gonna win this game. I think it'll
- 14:12be close, but i'd say something like along the lines
- 14:15of a twenty seven to twenty four kind of game.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I agree.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be another nail binder. But because
- 14:21of the Eagles success and that's the psychological advantage they
- 14:24have right now over Kansas City, I think they're going
- 14:27to go in there. Even though the Eagles have some
- 14:28question marks on the back end of the defense.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I do think.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I thought the Eagles linebacking corps played very well against Dallas.
- 14:34The front played well against Dallas. I think the Eagles
- 14:38going there and get off to a two and zero start,
- 14:41and you said twenty seven to twenty four, I'm gonna
- 14:44go twenty four to twenty Eagles get the all important road.
- 14:48Speaker 2: W From my colleague, my friend Ray Dinger, I'm Derek Gunn.
- 14:52Speaker 1: This has been Birds Weekly, presented by the Inside the
- 14:55Birds Network. We'll talk to you next week after the
- 14:58Eagles take down the Kansas City Chiefs. So long, everybody,
