- 1:05Speaker 3: need about the death of a former legislator current head
- 1:08Speaker 3: of HD Media, uh Ner Phasios, and a little bit
- 1:11Speaker 3: of everything Doug scaff and we're going to devote the
- 1:14Speaker 3: entire show to Doug today. I've normally as a guy
- 1:19Speaker 3: and the producers will tell you that's meticulous about planning.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Believe it or not, I actually put planning into the show.
- 1:23Speaker 3: People wouldn't think I did, But I got no plan
- 1:27Speaker 3: this morning. We're just going to bring people in studio
- 1:32Speaker 3: or on the phone to talk about Doug Scaff. I
- 1:35Speaker 3: have in studio with me Delegate Dana Ferrell, who, of course,
- 1:39Speaker 3: in addition to knowing Doug from the political world, also
- 1:43Speaker 3: new Doug through HD Media. Delegate, thank you for joining
- 1:46Speaker 3: us this morning. Thank you, Dave. I have with me
- 1:49Speaker 3: Steve Animal from ninety eight seven A Mountain Wild, a
- 1:52Speaker 3: wonderful classic rock, a very very close friend of Doug
- 1:55Speaker 3: scaff The mayor of Charleston, Amy Schulder Goodwin, is going
- 1:59Speaker 3: to be joining this little bit later on, and I
- 2:00Speaker 3: don't know who else is going to come in here.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I'll be honest with you, We're just devoting this entire
- 2:04Speaker 3: show to Doug. I do want to start though, I
- 2:07Speaker 3: have on the phone. I've got two people that knew
- 2:09Speaker 3: him very well, and oddly enough, because it's Doug scaff
- 2:15Speaker 3: one is a Republican and one's a Democrat. Perfect let's
- 2:19Speaker 3: go to the phones. Let's talk to County commission President
- 2:21Speaker 3: here Kanawha County Ben Selango, and also Attorney General JB. McCuskey. Commissioner,
- 2:28Speaker 3: thank you for joining us today.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Hey, thanks for having me. I was devastated when I
- 2:33Speaker 4: learned the news yesterday. I seriously could not believe it.
- 2:37Speaker 4: I was incompletely shock.
- 2:38Speaker 3: And Attorney General j B.
- 2:39Speaker 5: McCuskey, it's hard to really process this, and it's just
- 2:47Speaker 5: when you think about Marissa and the boys, it's hard
- 2:50Speaker 5: to really wrap your head around. I don't know, I
- 2:54Speaker 5: don't know what we need, but they're going to need
- 2:55Speaker 5: a lot of help.
- 2:57Speaker 6: JB.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Talk about your relationship with doug'scat.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Doug is one of the most joyful people I think
- 3:07Speaker 5: I've ever met, and it didn't really matter what happened
- 3:11Speaker 5: during the day in politics. With Doug, you always knew
- 3:15Speaker 5: that when the community needed something, Doug was going to
- 3:19Speaker 5: be the first person there. And you also always knew
- 3:22Speaker 5: if you needed something, Doug would be the first person
- 3:25Speaker 5: you could call if you wanted and so he was
- 3:28Speaker 5: sort of this this larger than life figure in politics
- 3:32Speaker 5: that was an actual friend to almost all of us.
- 3:36Speaker 5: And that is a skill that has been lost, and
- 3:39Speaker 5: it's something that honestly, we should all try to aspire to.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Commissioner the best commissioner.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I was thinking back yesterday. I was
- 3:51Speaker 4: actually in law school when Doug was an undergrad up
- 3:53Speaker 4: at WU. I have known him forever, and I remember
- 3:57Speaker 4: a good friend of mine, Rob Berthall, called me, it
- 3:59Speaker 4: was probably two thousand and seven, two thousand and eight,
- 4:01Speaker 4: and said, I want you to come over and meet
- 4:03Speaker 4: this this young man. It was his very first political
- 4:07Speaker 4: fundraising event, and he said he has the intelligence and
- 4:12Speaker 4: the charisma to be governor one day. And I remember
- 4:14Speaker 4: I went over and I had known Doug already, but
- 4:18Speaker 4: went over and chatted with him with that fundraiser, and
- 4:21Speaker 4: you know, we were friends for a very long time,
- 4:23Speaker 4: and Doug was always always had a smile on his face.
- 4:28Speaker 4: You know, even sometimes he and I would argue and fight,
- 4:30Speaker 4: typically about w sports, but we would always you know,
- 4:34Speaker 4: he was always just so happy. And I'm just I
- 4:38Speaker 4: feel terrible for his family, you know, Marson and the
- 4:41Speaker 4: boys and Doug Senior and his mom. I called them
- 4:45Speaker 4: yesterday and I'm just heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking news.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And again I'm sure everyone knows the news, but now
- 4:53Speaker 3: he was killed in a automobile accident on I seventy
- 4:56Speaker 3: nine yesterday and it happened to I think just after
- 5:00Speaker 3: four or four thirty or so yesterday afternoon. And it
- 5:03Speaker 3: was just two weeks ago, guys that I had Doug
- 5:06Speaker 3: Scaff on the show. I wanted it. He was so
- 5:08Speaker 3: excited about taking over Joe Fazios and I asked him
- 5:11Speaker 3: to come on the show and talk and talk about
- 5:15Speaker 3: it in the interview. It's you know, it's a surreal
- 5:18Speaker 3: moment in radio when i get out of the shower
- 5:20Speaker 3: this morning and I'm listening to myself interviewing Doug Scaff
- 5:24Speaker 3: from two weeks ago, and just the enthusiasm in his voice.
- 5:28Speaker 3: But that was Doug. Guy, Dana let me and I
- 5:31Speaker 3: know you guys are out of town and you're traveling everything,
- 5:33Speaker 3: so I'll get to you in a minute. I said,
- 5:35Speaker 3: this has no this thing has no rules. So Attorney
- 5:38Speaker 3: General McCuskey, I know you're very busy today, but I'm
- 5:41Speaker 3: going to give just give you the final thirty seconds
- 5:44Speaker 3: or so to just whatever you want to say about
- 5:46Speaker 3: Doug scaff.
- 5:48Speaker 5: I think that Doug will leave eleventh legacy that I
- 5:53Speaker 5: don't know that he knew he was leaving. And he
- 5:56Speaker 5: was truly one of the great champions for where he
- 5:59Speaker 5: was from. And he was an incredible father, and he
- 6:03Speaker 5: was a great husband, and he was a great person.
- 6:06Speaker 5: And it's hard to imagine what the capital and what
- 6:09Speaker 5: Charleston is going to be like without him. And I
- 6:12Speaker 5: think that's probably the hardest part for me and for
- 6:15Speaker 5: so many people, is that he was who so many
- 6:19Speaker 5: of us leaned on for so many things, and I
- 6:23Speaker 5: just can't It's just hard to really wrap my head around.
- 6:26Speaker 5: But I think what Ben said is perfect. He was
- 6:29Speaker 5: just a joyful, great person who's going to be missed
- 6:32Speaker 5: by so many people.
- 6:33Speaker 3: All Right, the Attorney General JM. McCaskey, I appreciate it.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Will let you continue on with your day, And Commissioner
- 6:40Speaker 3: Silango will we'll let you do the same thing that.
- 6:45Speaker 7: JB did.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Tara and I were scrolling through our photos last night
- 6:49Speaker 4: of i mean just probably ten or fifteen years of
- 6:53Speaker 4: pictures with Doug and came across the photo of us
- 6:57Speaker 4: together and we're all doing the horns down, you know,
- 7:00Speaker 4: at a WU Texas game, and you know, just so
- 7:04Speaker 4: many great memories of being around Doug and watching his energy,
- 7:10Speaker 4: and you know it is an incredible entrepreneur and just
- 7:14Speaker 4: brought so much to the community. He took over the
- 7:18Speaker 4: working with his best friend Doug Reynolds and working at
- 7:22Speaker 4: HD Media, and you know, I had the privilege of
- 7:26Speaker 4: working with them for a while. And he's he's just
- 7:30Speaker 4: going to be missed. He leaves behind a wonderful, wonderful family,
- 7:36Speaker 4: three great boys, and you know, hopefully, hopefully they're going
- 7:40Speaker 4: to be able to just pick up and carry on.
- 7:43Speaker 4: But I don't know how you do it. I don't
- 7:45Speaker 4: know how anybody does that after you lose a father,
- 7:50Speaker 4: you know, so young, and his parents lost a lost
- 7:53Speaker 4: a son, and I just can't imagine. So we're all
- 7:57Speaker 4: praying for them, all right.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Not a NDO Commission President, Been Slango. I appreciate you
- 8:01Speaker 3: being on the show. Thanks a lot, Thanks for having me,
- 8:03Speaker 3: all right, Steve Animal ninety eight seven, Amount the Wild,
- 8:05Speaker 3: a wonderful classic rock. Your thoughts of doug'scaf.
- 8:09Speaker 8: Awesome, dude, awesome, like they were saying the energy. I
- 8:13Speaker 8: think we were all inspired by Doug, I mean the state,
- 8:18Speaker 8: like you said, not only thinking about the loss, but
- 8:21Speaker 8: thinking about what he brought to the table every day,
- 8:24Speaker 8: and it was positive energy, always happy.
- 8:27Speaker 3: How can I help?
- 8:28Speaker 8: What can I do? I think we can Hopefully I'll
- 8:31Speaker 8: learn a lesson from Doug. That be luck, Doug, be upbeat,
- 8:35Speaker 8: be happy, go get it. You know, if I can
- 8:38Speaker 8: lend a hands, let me know.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I got a message here from a gentleman by the
- 8:42Speaker 3: name of Ernest Blevans who sent me a Facebook message
- 8:46Speaker 3: and he said, as you remember, I ran against Doug
- 8:50Speaker 3: in twenty twenty two for the House of del like
- 8:51Speaker 3: it's wild at the time political opponents. We had a
- 8:53Speaker 3: great campaign, which he won. He was always kind to me,
- 8:57Speaker 3: with good chats from time to time, even pointing me
- 9:00Speaker 3: in twenty twenty three as my kids served as a
- 9:05Speaker 3: page for him, and he encouraged me to run again
- 9:07Speaker 3: in twenty twenty four. I mean, and Dana Delegate Dana Ferrell,
- 9:11Speaker 3: that's too Doug scaff was. I mean, he really was.
- 9:15Speaker 3: You know, the run for Secretary of State that he
- 9:18Speaker 3: did last year, and it was a it was a
- 9:20Speaker 3: crowded primary. You know something we don't hear about a
- 9:22Speaker 3: lot and even and it was I don want to
- 9:26Speaker 3: say it was a bitter campaign, but it's a tough campaign.
- 9:30Speaker 3: And he said to me, he said, hey, look, I
- 9:33Speaker 3: don't have no ill will toward any of these people.
- 9:35Speaker 3: It's just it's just politics. That that's who scaff was delegate.
- 9:41Speaker 8: Yeah, we don't save babies or lives.
- 9:44Speaker 7: We just try to help people.
- 9:46Speaker 3: That's really it. No, And you know, chime in here.
- 9:49Speaker 9: I think you know you first of all, when you
- 9:52Speaker 9: look at that Secretary of State race, I recall, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 9: we were in the office and Doug told me and
- 9:57Speaker 9: he was thinking about doing that at the time when
- 9:59Speaker 9: he first got in, I think, are you sure you
- 10:01Speaker 9: want to you know, it's.
- 10:02Speaker 3: A state wide race. You want to do this?
- 10:03Speaker 9: And he said, yeah, you know, I think I think
- 10:06Speaker 9: I've got everything I need in the momentum.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And I really do think that.
- 10:10Speaker 9: You know, he had a very good shot at it
- 10:12Speaker 9: up until and of course when Warner came in, you
- 10:16Speaker 9: know the name there. I knew it was going to
- 10:17Speaker 9: be very tough for him, and I think he knew
- 10:19Speaker 9: that too, but you know, he never stopped. He went
- 10:22Speaker 9: out and in fact, one of the missions that have
- 10:25Speaker 9: this week had go was he still has this big
- 10:30Speaker 9: scaff for Secretary of State banner out on I seventy
- 10:32Speaker 9: seven there there in my district that I said, you know,
- 10:35Speaker 9: when you get that down, and uh but uh, I
- 10:39Speaker 9: understand why he didn't go get it down after the whole.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Encided up with the snake bites nice and the fact
- 10:44Speaker 3: that he could he could stare that in the face
- 10:47Speaker 3: and then and then laugh about it. I mean I
- 10:49Speaker 3: did a hop he did an interview with him, like
- 10:50Speaker 3: maybe the next day or so. I did one a
- 10:52Speaker 3: few days after that, and he was laughing about it.
- 10:54Speaker 3: He was on the show two weeks ago talking about
- 10:56Speaker 3: all the problems that he still has and he knew
- 10:58Speaker 3: he was gonna have it for the rest of his
- 10:59Speaker 3: life because of that snake bite. And he's he's and
- 11:02Speaker 3: he's laughing about it, because that's that's Doug's caaff. Talk
- 11:05Speaker 3: about your relationship on a professional level outside politics, through
- 11:09Speaker 3: through through through media.
- 11:10Speaker 9: Yeah, and it's it's going to be a tough morning,
- 11:13Speaker 9: tough few days at ast media because.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Uh sorry, that's all right, that's it's it's all good.
- 11:21Speaker 7: Doug was asty media.
- 11:24Speaker 9: And he he brought us all together as a team
- 11:27Speaker 9: over there. And you know how it is in in media,
- 11:30Speaker 9: you guys, you spend hours here together and you work,
- 11:34Speaker 9: you plan, and you you go through a lot together
- 11:37Speaker 9: and you become family.
- 11:38Speaker 3: And and I think that's the.
- 11:40Speaker 9: Way we're over there, and you just Tuesdays are a
- 11:42Speaker 9: big planning days over there. Yesterday morning, Doug was in Morgantown,
- 11:47Speaker 9: but he was on the phone conference call with us
- 11:49Speaker 9: and we were going over you know, a typical business
- 11:52Speaker 9: and looking ahead, and Doug was just like everybody said, positive, upbeat,
- 11:57Speaker 9: look at what we're going to do football.
- 11:58Speaker 3: You know, we're already planning for football.
- 12:00Speaker 2: He's in live stream there.
- 12:02Speaker 9: And then after me, I talked to him again individually
- 12:06Speaker 9: at lunch yesterday and we talked more about, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 9: some of our plans that were, you know, this coming week,
- 12:15Speaker 9: what we're going to do with a couple of our accounts.
- 12:17Speaker 7: And uh then I switched gears.
- 12:20Speaker 9: And said, hey, you know, what do you what are
- 12:22Speaker 9: you going to do because he had already signed up
- 12:23Speaker 9: to run for senate State Senate here in the seventeenth district,
- 12:28Speaker 9: and uh, I said, you know, have you got to
- 12:30Speaker 9: start on it. He said, I've been so busy with
- 12:32Speaker 9: the restaurant thing, and said, of course that was Doug.
- 12:35Speaker 9: He had his hands and everything, and uh he said,
- 12:37Speaker 9: but you know that's something, you know, we'll get on.
- 12:39Speaker 9: He gets me to get back in here, and it's just,
- 12:42Speaker 9: you know what hit me is. You know, that was
- 12:43Speaker 9: four hours before the accident, and you know he had
- 12:47Speaker 9: no other thought than he was thinking ahead. I mean, always,
- 12:50Speaker 9: as you said, he Doug was a guy that had
- 12:53Speaker 9: a vision for things and he could make them happen.
- 12:56Speaker 9: He surrounded himself with people that would help him make
- 12:58Speaker 9: him happen. This is a huge loss for the state
- 13:01Speaker 9: of West Virginia and especially here in Kanall Valley.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Had a text here from Tony Hodge, who is the
- 13:09Speaker 3: vice chair of the state Republican Party. So Doug was
- 13:12Speaker 3: very kind and gracious towards me. We talked a lot
- 13:14Speaker 3: about the newspaper he took over, and he hosted me
- 13:17Speaker 3: on his program outside the Echo Chamber. Whether we agreed
- 13:20Speaker 3: on politics or not, he always was respectful and carrying
- 13:23Speaker 3: us up with honor. He was very funny too, and
- 13:24Speaker 3: that's what I remember is that smile man.
- 13:27Speaker 9: You know, and in politics, let me say there, Doug
- 13:30Speaker 9: was a very common sense candidate legislator when I know
- 13:35Speaker 9: in there it wasn't about Republican or Democrat to him.
- 13:38Speaker 9: I think he just tried to look at the issues
- 13:40Speaker 9: and like most of us up there and try to say, Okay,
- 13:43Speaker 9: you know what's the right thing to do here by
- 13:44Speaker 9: the people.
- 13:44Speaker 7: And that's the Doug that I knew.
- 13:46Speaker 3: All Right, Tell good, I appreciate you coming in today.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I know I've got I don't know who else going
- 13:52Speaker 3: to be on the show. I really don't know. So
- 13:54Speaker 3: you're welcome to You're welcome to hang out, but I
- 13:56Speaker 3: may have to ask you to give up your microphone
- 13:58Speaker 3: here for a minute. We'll take a break and we'll
- 14:00Speaker 3: be back with more in the life and legacy and
- 14:02Speaker 3: remembering Doug scaff when we come back, stay with us.

- 16:30Speaker 3: You come in with tears in your eyes.
- 16:31Speaker 10: Man.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:33Speaker 10: Man.
- 16:33Speaker 13: First of all, I just want to send you know,
- 16:35Speaker 13: prayers and condolences to his wife and children, his uh,
- 16:39Speaker 13: his family, you know, you know him. You know, Doug
- 16:46Speaker 13: was just a awesome dude, smiling, jovial, always like a
- 16:51Speaker 13: good energy and you know, but not for Doug, I wouldn't,
- 16:54Speaker 13: you know, be in a position that I'm in. He uh,
- 16:57Speaker 13: you know, he quietly supported me behind the scenes and
- 17:00Speaker 13: you know, and supported what I was doing and you know,
- 17:03Speaker 13: and providing me with a lot of good tips and
- 17:05Speaker 13: tools to you know, be in this position. So yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 13: but most importantly, I just want to send out macondolences
- 17:13Speaker 13: to his family.
- 17:14Speaker 3: And I think we have a delegate Sean Hornbuckle who
- 17:17Speaker 3: is on the phone with his delegate. Good morning, Welcome
- 17:19Speaker 3: to the show, morning, Dave.
- 17:21Speaker 14: How you doing.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I'm doing fine.
- 17:23Speaker 15: Uh.
- 17:23Speaker 3: It's like a you know, I've got well Delegate Pharaoh.
- 17:27Speaker 3: I appreciate you coming in, Uh, Steve Animal, I appreciate
- 17:30Speaker 3: you being here. I'm just trying to usher people in
- 17:33Speaker 3: here right now.
- 17:33Speaker 10: Uh uh.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Your thoughts on on on Doug's scaff circle ahead.
- 17:38Speaker 14: Oh, I mean that's uh, I'm still you know, in
- 17:42Speaker 14: a bit of shock and uh stunned about my good
- 17:48Speaker 14: friend leaving us way too soon from this earth. But
- 17:54Speaker 14: he was an amazing individual, very gregarious, outgoing.
- 17:59Speaker 16: Uh.
- 18:00Speaker 14: You know, I'm just trying to make for h that
- 18:03Speaker 14: you know, the Charleston area in West Virginia for that matter,
- 18:07Speaker 14: was you know, was able to prosper. So you know,
- 18:10Speaker 14: I'm somewhat still had and lost words. You know, I've
- 18:14Speaker 14: known Doug for a good bit, but this past decade,
- 18:20Speaker 14: I would say we became really tight, uh, family like
- 18:24Speaker 14: and so it's just a hard to wrap my head
- 18:27Speaker 14: around right now.
- 18:29Speaker 13: All else you want to follow up with that? Yeah,
- 18:31Speaker 13: like I said, I haven't. I didn't get the chance
- 18:34Speaker 13: to know is Doug as long as some of our
- 18:36Speaker 13: other delicate teammates. But like I said, he was just
- 18:39Speaker 13: a great guy. I remember when I was campaigning, you know,
- 18:43Speaker 13: I was so in campaign mode. I'm just knocking doors.
- 18:45Speaker 13: You know, has mayor good ones, suggested man marry even
- 18:48Speaker 13: good one is the chat I'm knocking doors, knocking doors,
- 18:51Speaker 13: and whose door did not knock on?
- 18:53Speaker 17: I did?
- 18:53Speaker 7: I don't even know if I looked at the name.
- 18:55Speaker 13: I'm just knocking doors and I end up knocking his door,
- 18:58Speaker 13: you know, and it's at the time when he was
- 19:00Speaker 13: still recovering from the snake bike.
- 19:01Speaker 7: So you invited me in.
- 19:02Speaker 13: I got to you know, meet his meet his kids
- 19:04Speaker 13: and his wife, and he you know, just talking, just
- 19:08Speaker 13: kind of shooting and has you know, if you know
- 19:09Speaker 13: Doug's that's what you do when you talk to him
- 19:11Speaker 13: and meet him. So you know, it was just stuff
- 19:14Speaker 13: like that and trick or treating. His kids would trick
- 19:16Speaker 13: or treat with my kids in our neighborhood and everything
- 19:19Speaker 13: like that. So, like I said, just kind of on
- 19:21Speaker 13: the professional and the delegate side, and you know, on
- 19:25Speaker 13: the personal family side, we were really getting to know
- 19:28Speaker 13: each other. And his newspaper is always supported my articles.
- 19:32Speaker 13: I wrote a bunch of op eds and so I
- 19:34Speaker 13: just you know, Doug was always a guy if you
- 19:36Speaker 13: if you were on his team, you were on his team.
- 19:39Speaker 13: And uh just his delegate hornbookal mention. There's a guy's
- 19:42Speaker 13: a caliber to stay around Charles and then try to
- 19:44Speaker 13: make our city and state better.
- 19:47Speaker 7: You know, it's it's a it's a big loss.
- 19:49Speaker 3: And Delegate hornbackle before we let you go. I do
- 19:52Speaker 3: want to say this is interesting because I started putting
- 19:55Speaker 3: this show together last night and I don't really have
- 19:57Speaker 3: a lot of planning into this. I'm just like, you
- 19:59Speaker 3: want to come on, come in. And it just so
- 20:01Speaker 3: happened that the first two people that I got on
- 20:05Speaker 3: the show because of scheduling, we're a Republican and a Democrat.
- 20:08Speaker 3: It was the Attorney General h.
- 20:10Speaker 2: JB.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Mccusky and canow County Commission President Ben s Lango, a
- 20:15Speaker 3: Republican Democrat. Don't you think delegant Hornbockael. But that's kind
- 20:18Speaker 3: of that's kind of a personification of Doug Scaff that
- 20:22Speaker 3: the first two guests on my show were one Republican,
- 20:24Speaker 3: one Democrat.
- 20:25Speaker 14: I mean he was both. I guess that is very
- 20:31Speaker 14: very fit. And he was a good republic summer but
- 20:36Speaker 14: a good friend. I mean, heck, you know Scaff he
- 20:40Speaker 14: hosted my first and a fund raiser in Charleston at
- 20:44Speaker 14: the Van before it was the Hell House.
- 20:47Speaker 18: Uh.
- 20:47Speaker 14: I mean, we have so many memories. I mean, you know,
- 20:49Speaker 14: I don't want to get two emotions right now, but
- 20:53Speaker 14: U this is the h this is the first yeater
- 20:58Speaker 14: about so in her eight years that we haven't taken
- 21:02Speaker 14: our our annual trip, our annual guys trip in the summer,
- 21:08Speaker 14: which was this past weekend, and it sort of bothers
- 21:11Speaker 14: me a little bit, you know, just thinking with the
- 21:13Speaker 14: head trash that you know, had, we just be coming
- 21:16Speaker 14: back in town Sunday or Monday, maybe maybe things will
- 21:19Speaker 14: be a little bit different. And so I'm having a
- 21:23Speaker 14: hard time with that as well. But you know, at
- 21:26Speaker 14: the end of the day, I know that I'm going
- 21:30Speaker 14: to do whatever that I can, uh, you know, for
- 21:32Speaker 14: those three little boys, and and uh and Marissa, whether
- 21:36Speaker 14: it's if I'm in the Charleston area and she needs help,
- 21:39Speaker 14: you know, picking up one of those boys from practice,
- 21:42Speaker 14: I will, I will make myself available because I know
- 21:46Speaker 14: people already mentioned it, but Doug was there for me.
- 21:49Speaker 14: He showed up for me in a very big way.
- 21:52Speaker 14: He has helped with my maturation, uh, not only as
- 21:56Speaker 14: a public servant and helping me to ascend the things,
- 22:01Speaker 14: but also in business. And you know, I just I
- 22:06Speaker 14: hate that we're not going to be able to see
- 22:08Speaker 14: through some of those projects that we talked about. It's
- 22:12Speaker 14: just a it's just a lot right now. But I
- 22:16Speaker 14: love him and love his family, and I want to
- 22:19Speaker 14: make sure that we carck his name on Barry Strong
- 22:22Speaker 14: in the state of West Virginia.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Delicate, Sean Hornbuckle. I appreciate you being here. We'll let
- 22:27Speaker 3: you go. Thanks a lot man, Thanks for being here, Delegate.
- 22:30Speaker 14: Thank you all right.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Charleston may Or Amy Schuler, good one has stopped by, Mayor,
- 22:35Speaker 3: How are you.
- 22:36Speaker 19: I'm listening and loving to hear all of these amazing
- 22:42Speaker 19: stories about our friend Doug.
- 22:44Speaker 3: I mean, it's.
- 22:46Speaker 19: I do know this at fifty four. You you judge people,
- 22:51Speaker 19: not in always the good times, but the really hard times.
- 22:54Speaker 10: Right.
- 22:54Speaker 19: Everybody can be there for you for a birthday or
- 22:57Speaker 19: an anniversary or a party or it's super fun. Everybody's
- 23:01Speaker 19: there for you that during those times. But the things
- 23:05Speaker 19: that I know about Doug's gaff are the things that
- 23:08Speaker 19: you saw either on social or you're hearing now Dave
- 23:12Speaker 19: that during folks worst times when you really need a pickup,
- 23:17Speaker 19: if people know about it or not. And the thing
- 23:20Speaker 19: that is just so amazing, and it is just so
- 23:24Speaker 19: inspiring and so great that his three little boys watched
- 23:28Speaker 19: this of him.
- 23:30Speaker 16: They're just darling.
- 23:31Speaker 19: One is cuter than the next. They're just precious, rambunctious,
- 23:36Speaker 19: energy like their dad, during loss, during health issues, during
- 23:46Speaker 19: political fights, and it didn't matter if he lost to
- 23:50Speaker 19: someone or he was in a had a disagreement with someone,
- 23:54Speaker 19: he always came back. He was the constant professional. And
- 24:01Speaker 19: that is what I will take away because especially in
- 24:04Speaker 19: this rough and tumble world of politics, right, Hollis I mean,
- 24:08Speaker 19: is it has become so nasty and so awful. There
- 24:11Speaker 19: there are folks who run against people who never speak
- 24:13Speaker 19: to folks or have this vitriol to them. That was
- 24:18Speaker 19: not Delegate scaff It's almost like he took it and
- 24:20Speaker 19: then just came back.
- 24:21Speaker 4: That is what you know.
- 24:23Speaker 19: As a parent, I think about that. As Doug, I
- 24:26Speaker 19: can talk about he was student body president, he started
- 24:29Speaker 19: the Up all Night which my kids have benefited from.
- 24:31Speaker 19: He started the Mountain Air Maniacs. You know that energy,
- 24:34Speaker 19: that enthusiasm, the good work that he's done, not only
- 24:37Speaker 19: with the Guy's Night Out, and.
- 24:39Speaker 16: I can list all of them.
- 24:40Speaker 19: I mean, you don't have enough time in your show, Dave,
- 24:43Speaker 19: or your afternoon show to do that. But the thing
- 24:46Speaker 19: that I will remember and take away and try to
- 24:50Speaker 19: again emulate and implement in my lives and influence my
- 24:54Speaker 19: boys to do that It doesn't matter if you're on
- 24:57Speaker 19: the other side. You said it best day, Republican Democrats.
- 25:00Speaker 19: It doesn't matter if somebody is up against you or
- 25:03Speaker 19: disagrees with you, that you come back and you are
- 25:08Speaker 19: humble and you are gracious, and you give people the
- 25:10Speaker 19: space and grace even if you're in conflict with them
- 25:14Speaker 19: on an idea or a campaign or love or loss.
- 25:19Speaker 19: And that is something that is really important. I think
- 25:21Speaker 19: that we all take away. I can hardly open my
- 25:24Speaker 19: Facebook up without crying.
- 25:27Speaker 3: It was like every other post. Yeah, and what an.
- 25:31Speaker 19: Influence, you know, I mean, And I hope that people
- 25:34Speaker 19: see that and delicate Eric Eric Store too. I know,
- 25:37Speaker 19: you know, everybody knows, you know, Delegate Store. She was
- 25:41Speaker 19: a friend of a girlfriend of mine, one of my
- 25:43Speaker 19: sister's closest friends, up and wheeling, and you know, she said,
- 25:46Speaker 19: when I open up my page, I think, wow, he
- 25:49Speaker 19: kind of weaved his way into so many of our
- 25:52Speaker 19: lives and had such a great impact on not just
- 25:56Speaker 19: political I mean, forget that, it's the guy at the
- 25:59Speaker 19: you know, the seven eleven.
- 26:00Speaker 7: He was like, oh yeah, sure, you know.
- 26:02Speaker 19: Patty Hamilton talked about him this morning at a public post.
- 26:06Speaker 19: Dave so I'm not saying something that she wouldn't want
- 26:09Speaker 19: me to say. She was out and I think doing
- 26:11Speaker 19: maybe a honkin' wave maybe with him and felt ill
- 26:15Speaker 19: it was not okay and a little stumbly on her feet.
- 26:19Speaker 19: He got her to the car, He stayed with her.
- 26:21Speaker 19: He called nine one one, and not only did that,
- 26:24Speaker 19: he took her to the hospital and he stayed with
- 26:26Speaker 19: her until he knew that her family was there and
- 26:29Speaker 19: he was taking care.
- 26:29Speaker 20: Of buddy oday.
- 26:30Speaker 7: That's the deal. That is the deal right there.
- 26:34Speaker 19: You know, it's it's super easy to put your face
- 26:36Speaker 19: on you know, Facebook and post and it doesn't matter.
- 26:40Speaker 19: Jim can tell you this, Hollis can tell you this.
- 26:43Speaker 19: Other folks can tell you this. It is what you
- 26:46Speaker 19: do behind closed doors and behind the scenes which really matters.
- 26:48Speaker 3: At the end of the day.
- 26:49Speaker 19: There is absolutely no one in his family that is
- 26:52Speaker 19: sitting there looking at his shiny awards. There is nobody
- 26:55Speaker 19: that called him a friend that is sitting there regurgitating
- 26:59Speaker 19: all his alco leges. Today, they are taking away the
- 27:03Speaker 19: things that should be on a shelf that aren't the
- 27:06Speaker 19: things of his character and his nature that we all take.
- 27:09Speaker 19: My mom always says, look at me and take all
- 27:12Speaker 19: of the good. Take away all the good, and if
- 27:15Speaker 19: I have any bad, let those fall to the floor.
- 27:17Speaker 19: If we're going to take away anything from Doug scaff boy,
- 27:20Speaker 19: there handfuls of great things that he gave to us.
- 27:23Speaker 19: Imparted on all this, and.
- 27:26Speaker 7: We love them.
- 27:26Speaker 3: I had a text here from Tony the Taylor, and
- 27:30Speaker 3: he wanted to come in, but he said, can't make it.
- 27:33Speaker 3: I just wanted to say Doug was a close friend, confidant,
- 27:36Speaker 3: and I was surely miss our friendship. Prayers of comfort
- 27:38Speaker 3: for his family is such a huge loss.
- 27:40Speaker 19: He loved Tony so much.
- 27:41Speaker 3: For our state. Jim Strawn is with us, trying to
- 27:45Speaker 3: let Jimbo collect his collect a little.
- 27:48Speaker 16: Bit hearing excuse me, I'm trying to be really strong.
- 27:54Speaker 16: Mayor said it really well. His legacy, it's really deep.
- 28:03Speaker 16: It runs through right through all of us, right through
- 28:07Speaker 16: right through all of us. And I admired him and
- 28:12Speaker 16: respected and he inspired me. His commitment to this community
- 28:18Speaker 16: us as West Virginians canal alliance and Charlestonians unparallel.
- 28:25Speaker 2: His drive to.
- 28:28Speaker 16: Help raise for those that needed it indirectly and directly
- 28:33Speaker 16: just was second to none, infectious. His ability to include everybody.
- 28:44Speaker 16: It didn't matter who your stance, he included you.
- 28:50Speaker 7: He had a gift that was quite frankly, I.
- 28:55Speaker 20: Just marveled.
- 28:59Speaker 7: At it.
- 29:00Speaker 16: Wow, look at you bringing all of us together. And
- 29:04Speaker 16: he was so daring to do that.
- 29:09Speaker 7: So much.
- 29:11Speaker 16: This is going to ripple through our state, in this
- 29:13Speaker 16: valley for many months and years and decades to come.
- 29:18Speaker 16: He had so much more to live for. I preach
- 29:21Speaker 16: being strong. I'm here today. Try it being strong, Dave.
- 29:26Speaker 16: I appreciate you reach it out to me. I didn't
- 29:29Speaker 16: know what today was going to bring. I'm I'm here
- 29:35Speaker 16: to lift one of the best people that I've ever
- 29:38Speaker 16: known up, and that's why I'm here. I appreciate the opportunity.
- 29:44Speaker 7: I'm just going to honor him.
- 29:46Speaker 9: Now.
- 29:46Speaker 7: I'm gonna work harder than ever.
- 29:48Speaker 16: I'm going to work harder than everything.
- 29:49Speaker 19: And coming from somebody like Jim Strong, who people look
- 29:52Speaker 19: at as energy and positivity. So think about that. Think
- 29:56Speaker 19: about if it's Jim Strong who is looking to Doug
- 30:00Speaker 19: scaff to say you've got positivity and energy, By golly,
- 30:04Speaker 19: that's that might be the highest compliment.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Let's go now to a state Democratic Party chair and
- 30:10Speaker 3: delegate Mike Pushkin, who is out of town unfortunately not
- 30:13Speaker 3: able to join us in the studio. Michael, good morning,
- 30:16Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
- 30:18Speaker 18: Good morning. They First, I appreciate you having the show
- 30:21Speaker 18: and devoting the show to Doug and Doug's memory. Heart
- 30:26Speaker 18: goes out to Marissa and his family and everybody from
- 30:30Speaker 18: the mayor, Jim, everybody. That's that's shared from the heart today.
- 30:36Speaker 18: Doug had an ability that I strive to have and
- 30:41Speaker 18: often falls short off, and that's he had the ability
- 30:43Speaker 18: to let things just roll off his back.
- 30:46Speaker 16: And that's true.
- 30:48Speaker 18: I think last time he was on, I don't know
- 30:49Speaker 18: if it was your show at the state Wide show, Dave,
- 30:51Speaker 18: but last time he was on, he was talking about,
- 30:53Speaker 18: you know, the campaigns over, people need to go.
- 30:55Speaker 3: That was this show on the twenty second Mike on
- 30:58Speaker 3: twenty second.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Yeah, Well that's how he was.
- 31:02Speaker 18: It's so rare in politics these days that he could
- 31:05Speaker 18: drop the politics when it came time to get to
- 31:07Speaker 18: work because he was a true public servant. He loved
- 31:11Speaker 18: his community. And that's why they put together the group
- 31:13Speaker 18: to purchase thasios. It's not because they needed another project,
- 31:18Speaker 18: because he wanted to say to Charleston Institution because he
- 31:20Speaker 18: loved Charleston and that's just the kind of things that
- 31:23Speaker 18: he did. And I just, you know, above all else,
- 31:28Speaker 18: you know, knowing them and being his friend. I saw
- 31:30Speaker 18: how devoted he was to his family. And that's all
- 31:32Speaker 18: I can think about today is is a Marsa and
- 31:35Speaker 18: those boys?
- 31:36Speaker 7: All right?
- 31:37Speaker 4: Hey, Mike, how they get through this?
- 31:40Speaker 7: All right?
- 31:40Speaker 3: Mike, we appreciate you being here and calling us out.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Thanks a lot. It's twenty two minutes away from ten

- 34:32Speaker 3: Welcome back to the show, nineteen away from ten. We're
- 34:34Speaker 3: just paying tribute to Doug Dougscaff today. I have a
- 34:37Speaker 3: statement here from State Treasurer Larry Pack. Larry was scheduled
- 34:41Speaker 3: to be on the show today to talk about something
- 34:43Speaker 3: totally different, and then I reached out last night to
- 34:45Speaker 3: carry who to sec formerly of our company here who
- 34:47Speaker 3: now is with mister Pack And he was going to
- 34:52Speaker 3: try to do it, and he just couldn't do it.
- 34:54Speaker 3: And that's understandable. Everybody processes grief in different ways, and
- 34:59Speaker 3: I understand. But the statement says, from say treasure Larry Pack,
- 35:02Speaker 3: I am a loss of words to accurately describe my
- 35:05Speaker 3: shock and sadness over the passinger Doug's scaff at such
- 35:08Speaker 3: a young age. When I think about Doug, I first
- 35:10Speaker 3: go to his beloved children and his lovely wife. Doug
- 35:12Speaker 3: wore many hats, but the most important to him was husband, father, son, brother,
- 35:16Speaker 3: nephew and cousin. He was so proud of his family
- 35:19Speaker 3: and quick to tell you about them. Doug was also
- 35:20Speaker 3: a leader in the community and state. I always thought
- 35:23Speaker 3: he was just getting started. Doug had the ability to
- 35:26Speaker 3: connect with people from all walks of life. That ability
- 35:29Speaker 3: comes from his love of others. His life is indeed fragile, short,
- 35:32Speaker 3: and often so unfair. I will continue to pray for
- 35:35Speaker 3: his family and attempt to honor Doug by showing love
- 35:37Speaker 3: and grace to others. That statement from State Treasurer Larry Pack.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Let's go now to delicate jb Acres. Good morning, sir,
- 35:45Speaker 3: and welcome to the show.
- 35:47Speaker 21: Hey, good morning, Dave. I wish it was for different reasons,
- 35:49Speaker 21: but I appreciate you having me.
- 35:50Speaker 3: On your memories of Doug scaff Sir, go ahead.
- 35:54Speaker 21: Well you invited me to make a call, which I
- 35:57Speaker 21: appreciate you got. I think through other folks like mayor
- 35:59Speaker 21: Bis Studio. She you know, I would say she had
- 36:01Speaker 21: a closer personal relationship with Doug than me. Someone can
- 36:05Speaker 21: pretend like, you know, I was Doug's best friend, but
- 36:08Speaker 21: we were friendly. I've known Doug, you know for twenty
- 36:11Speaker 21: plus years. My wife Mary Claire doing better than me.
- 36:16Speaker 21: She used to talk to Doug quite a bit, and
- 36:18Speaker 21: they used to text with each other a lot, and
- 36:20Speaker 21: he just always a very gracious guy. I would guess
- 36:24Speaker 21: that maybe one of the reasons he reached out to
- 36:25Speaker 21: me is, you know a Republican Doug. You know, Doug
- 36:28Speaker 21: for most of his political career was a Democrat, but
- 36:30Speaker 21: he was gracious to everyone. I can say that genuinely.
- 36:33Speaker 21: You know, you just read a message from Larry Pack
- 36:35Speaker 21: to say Treasurer, who's a very staunch conservative. But I
- 36:39Speaker 21: saw Treasurer Pack in the gym this morning. He and
- 36:41Speaker 21: I go around the same time, and he was visibly
- 36:45Speaker 21: upset about this. When I spoke with him, he brought
- 36:47Speaker 21: it up. He's known the Skaff family for a long
- 36:50Speaker 21: long time, and my wife Mary Clare was the first
- 36:54Speaker 21: one to tell me yesterday. She was also I can tell.
- 36:57Speaker 21: She approached me. You have these moments, Dave, when you
- 36:59Speaker 21: know someone going to tell you bad news, and you
- 37:01Speaker 21: can tell this something treat me is really wrong, and
- 37:03Speaker 21: my mind started to race. I could tell something that happened,
- 37:06Speaker 21: and she told me that that Doug had passed. It
- 37:08Speaker 21: was not long after he had the wreck, and I
- 37:11Speaker 21: physically turned my head to the side and said, oh
- 37:12Speaker 21: my god, you start thinking about his family.
- 37:15Speaker 4: You know.
- 37:16Speaker 21: I put on a post yesterday just primarily about his
- 37:18Speaker 21: wife and his kids. Which is where our thoughts, im
- 37:20Speaker 21: pro should be. But I want to say too, as
- 37:23Speaker 21: a dad, I didn't know Doug's mom or is his
- 37:26Speaker 21: siblings really other than just caital meetings. But I've had
- 37:29Speaker 21: some conversations with his dad. Super nice guy, and I
- 37:32Speaker 21: just want to put some focus on Doug Senior for
- 37:34Speaker 21: just a moment. As a father, Doug Senior adored his
- 37:39Speaker 21: son in the mutuals. You know, they loved each other deeply.
- 37:43Speaker 21: You could see it when they were together. It was
- 37:45Speaker 21: just a great relationship. So just I just want to
- 37:49Speaker 21: I'm not trying to, you know, point him out to
- 37:51Speaker 21: the exclusion anyone else. Everyone in the family deserves the
- 37:54Speaker 21: prayers and our thoughts. But that was a special relationship
- 37:57Speaker 21: that that Doug Senior and Doug Junior had.
- 38:00Speaker 3: It just really was Delica Jbacres, I appreciate you calling
- 38:04Speaker 3: us up. Thanks a lot.
- 38:05Speaker 21: Hey, thanks for having me on. You guys have a
- 38:07Speaker 21: great day.
- 38:07Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 38:07Speaker 3: It's fifteen minutes away from ten County Commission. Natalie Tennant
- 38:10Speaker 3: joins us. Now, good morning, welcome to the show.
- 38:13Speaker 16: Good morning, this is a tough morning.
- 38:16Speaker 6: We had a meeting earlier with the mayor and Charleston area,
- 38:20Speaker 6: allnes is just so quiet, and you know, that's what
- 38:23Speaker 6: I thought was one of the first things when I
- 38:27Speaker 6: found out that his dad was the first one notified
- 38:31Speaker 6: was Doug Senior. And there's just so there's so much
- 38:37Speaker 6: that both of them touched. I think about being at
- 38:42Speaker 6: the WVU Alumni Center and the staff family area in
- 38:49Speaker 6: that corner, and I just saw Doug Senior at the
- 38:55Speaker 6: ribbon cutting of Olive Tree. And what's interesting about that
- 38:59Speaker 6: is that Doug scaff and that part of the community.
- 39:04Speaker 6: A lot of people only know him as a candidate,
- 39:08Speaker 6: an office holder, or you know, a politician. But that's
- 39:13Speaker 6: the part of Doug that I loved, was his church
- 39:17Speaker 6: community and his Lebanese community. And Delegate Acres just said
- 39:21Speaker 6: it when there's such a special relationship that that Doug
- 39:26Speaker 6: Senior and Doug Junior had. I was sitting there and
- 39:29Speaker 6: talking with so many members of the church and actually
- 39:36Speaker 6: Michael Jerus's mother in law and then her sisters, two sisters,
- 39:42Speaker 6: and there I'm like, oh, is there only three girls? No,
- 39:44Speaker 6: we had a son, we had a brother, and of course,
- 39:46Speaker 6: you know, the son in any Lebanese family is always
- 39:50Speaker 6: held up so high and that's when I knew about
- 39:54Speaker 6: that that relationship that father and son Doug scaff had,
- 40:00Speaker 6: and that the church and the Lebanese community, and that's
- 40:05Speaker 6: maybe why Doug opened himself so much to make sure
- 40:10Speaker 6: he was taking care of Knawa County, West Virginia, Charleston.
- 40:15Speaker 6: Whether it was the newspaper, I know you all talked
- 40:17Speaker 6: about this probably and coming back with the restaurant and
- 40:22Speaker 6: things and things that needed. I think that Delegate Acres.
- 40:25Speaker 6: The thing that I appreciate what he said, probably as
- 40:30Speaker 6: much as anybody sitting here now at this desk beside me,
- 40:33Speaker 6: is that that's where you do go. It goes back
- 40:36Speaker 6: to your family.
- 40:37Speaker 19: And of course Delegate Acres would say as a father,
- 40:40Speaker 19: it made me immediately think because to have to bury
- 40:43Speaker 19: a child is just.
- 40:46Speaker 7: It's torture.
- 40:47Speaker 19: And I appreciate his comments because that's that's where and
- 40:51Speaker 19: he knew, as as the Delegate said, on a professional level,
- 40:56Speaker 19: but it was deeper than that. I mean, it's you
- 40:58Speaker 19: can tell that it's deeper than that, because Doug just
- 41:01Speaker 19: didn't just allow folks to have a professional relationship with him,
- 41:06Speaker 19: You had a personal relationship with them. So if you
- 41:09Speaker 19: worked with him a day a week, an hour, or
- 41:11Speaker 19: a decade. You had that impact and influence on him
- 41:15Speaker 19: because it was positive.
- 41:16Speaker 7: And I appreciate that one hundred percent.
- 41:18Speaker 13: And you know a lot of times, you know, Charleston, Westerrginia,
- 41:20Speaker 13: we get a bad rap and there's a lot of negativity.
- 41:23Speaker 13: And what I appreciated by Doug most was he was
- 41:25Speaker 13: trying to make this state, this area the best it
- 41:28Speaker 13: can be by, you know, participating in our parades and restaurants,
- 41:32Speaker 13: keeping our newspaper alive, doing things to make the lives
- 41:36Speaker 13: of not only you know us as his colleagues, but
- 41:39Speaker 13: the youth and everything better. So you know, I just
- 41:42Speaker 13: appreciate that that bright smell, the good energy and his
- 41:47Speaker 13: work that he did in this community in state.
- 41:49Speaker 3: I mean, you read a text here, not only just
- 41:51Speaker 3: one second. Let me read this text here and I'll
- 41:52Speaker 3: get to you. It's so hard to believe that Doug
- 41:54Speaker 3: is gone. My prayers are with his family. It's hard
- 41:56Speaker 3: to imagine his life here without him. He was a
- 41:59Speaker 3: good friend. And one year ago, yesterday he sent me
- 42:02Speaker 3: a tax was checking on me. It's Doug, he said.
- 42:05Speaker 3: As soon as he was able to get back on
- 42:07Speaker 3: his feet, we would have to go to for some
- 42:08Speaker 3: hot dogs for lunch.
- 42:09Speaker 7: We never made it.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Doug will be missed by so many who loved him.
- 42:12Speaker 3: That's from Fred Albert, former American Federation of Teachers President
- 42:16Speaker 3: Commissioner Tenant.
- 42:18Speaker 6: I'm just I mean, we all go to the family.
- 42:22Speaker 6: How are we going to take care of those boys?
- 42:24Speaker 6: I mean, I know that they have a community, and
- 42:26Speaker 6: when we say, you know, we take we pray for
- 42:30Speaker 6: your comfort and your strength. And the comfort may not
- 42:33Speaker 6: come from us, but it comes from I'm hopeful, and
- 42:36Speaker 6: I know, as I just relayed from last Thursday, I
- 42:39Speaker 6: know that there is a community there. You know, the
- 42:45Speaker 6: older one will know him well. I mean, I'm sorry
- 42:49Speaker 6: I get too much in the weeds about how these
- 42:52Speaker 6: these wonderful boys that he was so proud of will
- 42:56Speaker 6: see their father. I don't want them to have to
- 42:59Speaker 6: live in this, you know, this image of their father
- 43:05Speaker 6: to be is to be him, but to be them,
- 43:08Speaker 6: because that's what he would want them to be their
- 43:10Speaker 6: own strength, And you know, maybe, I mean maybe we
- 43:15Speaker 6: can just think of that and I just, you know,
- 43:18Speaker 6: thank you, thank you for this opportunity just to sit
- 43:20Speaker 6: and talk. And everyone else is is is you know,
- 43:25Speaker 6: experiencing this, and as I was driving in, I heard
- 43:28Speaker 6: Jim Strawn and I called Jim.
- 43:32Speaker 16: Yesterday.
- 43:32Speaker 6: It's like, yeah, I'd never really been on this side
- 43:35Speaker 6: before in such a way. I mean, Mayor, I know
- 43:39Speaker 6: that you have because you get that first call when
- 43:41Speaker 6: you hear things. And now being a new county commissioner,
- 43:44Speaker 6: I got the first call from my president, Ben Selango.
- 43:47Speaker 6: And then you know, we're all we're all doing our
- 43:52Speaker 6: official things to help make sure that our community is strong. You,
- 43:56Speaker 6: the city, me, the county and the state. How do
- 43:59Speaker 6: we take here of each other?
- 44:01Speaker 19: And and you know, your texture said something that I
- 44:05Speaker 19: think a lot of us are feeling because I'm getting
- 44:07Speaker 19: lots of text as I'm sitting here. You know what
- 44:09Speaker 19: most of us instantly did and official duties aside, and
- 44:13Speaker 19: I know I did it. I went to my text,
- 44:16Speaker 19: I went to my last time.
- 44:18Speaker 7: I talked to that.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Yet I'll get there eventually, and I.
- 44:22Speaker 19: Can hardly get through it because it was quintessential Doug
- 44:27Speaker 19: scaff jovial. You know, we we joked about the pimento
- 44:32Speaker 19: cheese and fruit because you know that's what I appreciate
- 44:34Speaker 19: out phasios and the levity that he brought and even
- 44:39Speaker 19: in hard conversations or support of conversations, he was just
- 44:43Speaker 19: getting ready to host something for me next Tuesday. And
- 44:49Speaker 19: that's just that's what we all want. We want to
- 44:51Speaker 19: have that instant connection. And Commissioner Tennant and I talked
- 44:56Speaker 19: about this during the boys basketball game, if you recall
- 44:59Speaker 19: Natalie in the stands, and we were talking about friends
- 45:02Speaker 19: and people who have influenced our lives who we have
- 45:05Speaker 19: lost over the past you know, two years, Judge Tabot
- 45:10Speaker 19: and John Kennedy, Bailey and Sean. It just it has
- 45:15Speaker 19: been a incredible blow to the young professionals of our
- 45:19Speaker 19: community and folks who impacted so many people. And the
- 45:24Speaker 19: and what you have to take away, Dave, from all
- 45:27Speaker 19: of this are exactly what I said earlier. You take
- 45:30Speaker 19: the good and the pieces of the people that you
- 45:34Speaker 19: who are your mentors or who you look at and say,
- 45:37Speaker 19: I like that about Hollis, I like that about Doug,
- 45:41Speaker 19: and I want to take that piece of them with
- 45:43Speaker 19: me and continue forward through our service through our communities.
- 45:49Speaker 3: It's nine p. Fifty three. We'll take a break and
- 45:51Speaker 3: be back after this.

- 47:44Speaker 3: Welcome back to the show. Six minutes in front of
- 47:47Speaker 3: ten o'clock special show today, just paying tribute to life
- 47:51Speaker 3: of Doug scaff and I appreciate everybody. If I start
- 47:55Speaker 3: mentioning names and going to leave somebody out, I will
- 47:57Speaker 3: say that I reached out last night to pretty much
- 48:00Speaker 3: everybody I know in the political world, and for everybody
- 48:03Speaker 3: that I knew we could talk to about Doug scaff
- 48:08Speaker 3: with and.
- 48:10Speaker 2: My phone.
- 48:11Speaker 3: For an old man that goes to bed about nine
- 48:13Speaker 3: thirty every night, I'm not Steve Annibal. I don't live
- 48:16Speaker 3: the rock of old lifestyle at my age anymore.
- 48:18Speaker 7: Steve still does.
- 48:20Speaker 3: But I was up till late last night, late by
- 48:24Speaker 3: my standards is like eleven eleven thirty, and I was
- 48:28Speaker 3: reaching out and taking text and so on and so forth,
- 48:31Speaker 3: and a lot of people said, you know, I'd like
- 48:35Speaker 3: to come on. I just can't, you know, right now,
- 48:38Speaker 3: And Okay, I think we do have a phone call.
- 48:42Speaker 3: So let's let's go to the phones. Go ahead, and
- 48:44Speaker 3: you're on the air.
- 48:47Speaker 4: Yes.
- 48:48Speaker 15: Hi, my name is Kelly Bimer. I'm a president and
- 48:52Speaker 15: co founder West Virginia Kids Answer Crusaders. Yes, and Doug
- 48:58Speaker 15: scaff along with his wife Marissa, were also co founders
- 49:02Speaker 15: with me, and I just wanted to share with you,
- 49:06Speaker 15: you know, some of the things that Doug would do
- 49:10Speaker 15: with West Virginia Kids Cancer Crusaders. You know, Doug was
- 49:15Speaker 15: the kind of guy who was he was very simple.
- 49:17Speaker 15: He loved the children, the cancer kids. He would you know,
- 49:22Speaker 15: set up inflatables first at the Christmas parties. He knew
- 49:25Speaker 15: all the cancer kids other first names. They loved him
- 49:30Speaker 15: and he loved them. And you know, Doug was just
- 49:35Speaker 15: the kind of guy. He was just full of life.
- 49:38Speaker 15: And his involvement with West Virginia Kids Cancer Crusaders is
- 49:43Speaker 15: going to be really missed.
- 49:45Speaker 3: All right, Kelly, I appreciate your phone call. Thanks a lot,
- 49:48Speaker 3: Thanks for sharing that with us.
- 49:49Speaker 14: Uh.
- 49:50Speaker 3: You know, it was interesting because, as I said, I
- 49:53Speaker 3: think I said, I don't know what I said out loud,
- 49:55Speaker 3: and wanted what's in my head. But as I listened
- 50:00Speaker 3: the Morning News every morning when I'm getting ready for work,
- 50:02Speaker 3: and this morning, just about the time I got out
- 50:04Speaker 3: of the shower, Chris and Jeff were playing the audio
- 50:09Speaker 3: of the interview that I did back on May twenty
- 50:11Speaker 3: second with Doug scaff about the takeover of PHASEOS, and
- 50:16Speaker 3: I talked about that. Of course, he'll you know, forever
- 50:18Speaker 3: being o from Snake by an incident, so I talked
- 50:20Speaker 3: to you about that as well. But then I guess
- 50:22Speaker 3: the clip that really got to me was I think
- 50:27Speaker 3: I just asked him like about the state of politics
- 50:29Speaker 3: or something right now. And you'll probably hear this clip
- 50:32Speaker 3: several times throughout the day here in that Doug scaff style,
- 50:37Speaker 3: he said something to the effect of, look, the campaign
- 50:40Speaker 3: is over, you know, I mean, Doug ran unsuccessfully for
- 50:43Speaker 3: Secretary of State. He was going to run for more offices.
- 50:46Speaker 7: We all know that, but he.
- 50:47Speaker 3: Said the campaign is over, it's time to stop with
- 50:50Speaker 3: the back and forth and it's time to get to
- 50:55Speaker 3: work for the people to West Virginia. And that was
- 50:57Speaker 3: like the most Doug scaff thing ever to me. And
- 51:05Speaker 3: that's the scaff that I want to that I want
- 51:08Speaker 3: to remember. He just wanted, he just wanted to do good.
- 51:11Speaker 7: Steve.
- 51:12Speaker 8: Yeah, he was a great bridge builder. Okay, your side,
- 51:16Speaker 8: this side, it doesn't matter what side you're on. Let's
- 51:18Speaker 8: get together, figure it out, make it work, and be
- 51:21Speaker 8: like Doug man, bring some happiness to the table, have
- 51:24Speaker 8: a smile on your face and just go do it.
- 51:27Speaker 8: But try to help some people. And he was awesome.
- 51:29Speaker 8: He will definitely be missed.
- 51:31Speaker 3: TJ Meadows is here with talk Line and TJ as
- 51:35Speaker 3: opposed to doing our normal preview that we would do.
- 51:38Speaker 3: I know you dropped a commentary today. We'll save that,
- 51:40Speaker 3: you know for the show. Absolutely your thoughts on Doug Scaff.
- 51:45Speaker 3: I met Doug twenty six years ago as a freshman
- 51:48Speaker 3: at WVU when he was a senior at WVU and
- 51:51Speaker 3: he was student body president. A couple of things that
- 51:53Speaker 3: you knew right off the bat about Doug. Everybody knew Doug.
- 51:57Speaker 3: Everybody loved Doug. People wanted to be around him, and
- 52:01Speaker 3: even at that age, Steve, he had those abilities that
- 52:06Speaker 3: you were talking about in terms of bringing people together.
- 52:08Speaker 3: Founded the Mountaineer Maniacs, brought people together. Gone way too
- 52:13Speaker 3: soon and his best years were ahead. It's a tragedy
- 52:15Speaker 3: and I just feel for his wife, his boys, a
- 52:19Speaker 3: lot of people dealing with a lot of pain this morning.
- 52:23Speaker 3: But I think the takeaway is is that Doug scaff
- 52:28Speaker 3: was a man of the people and people loved Doug Scaff.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Sometimes they didn't always agree with him, but at the
- 52:35Speaker 3: end of the day, he had that smile and that
- 52:36Speaker 3: wavy hair and he would just kind of look at you.
- 52:38Speaker 3: He just kind of look at you and go see
- 52:40Speaker 3: you man. It was maybe one of the best heads
- 52:43Speaker 3: of hair I've ever seen in my life. Actually, all right,
- 52:45Speaker 3: we'll leave it there, We'll be back. I'll be back
- 52:47Speaker 3: with Metro News midday at noon. Until then, have fun
- 52:50Speaker 3: and love somebody. RP Doug.
