- 0:41McIlroy, one of the best golfers in the world.
- 0:44Whether you know a lot about golf or just a little, you'll
- 0:47find out some cool things about Rory and his journey.
- 0:50So grab your favorite snack, get comfy, and get ready to learn
- 0:54about this amazing athlete. Let's start with the basics, who
- 0:58is Rory McIlroy? Rory McIlroy is a professional
- 1:01golfer from Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is a part of
- 1:04the United Kingdom and is known for its beautiful green hills
- 1:08and castles. Rory was born on May 4th, 1989
- 1:12in a town called Hollywood. That's right, Hollywood, not
- 1:16Hollywood like in California. Rory grew up in a regular house
- 1:20with his mom and dad. His dad, Jerry, worked different
- 1:24jobs including being a bartender and a golfer himself.
- 1:27His mom, Rosie, worked long hours at a factory to help
- 1:31support Rory's dream. When Rory was just a little kid,
- 1:35he loved playing golf. His dad, Jerry, taught him how
- 1:38to swing a Golf Club when he was only two years old.
- 1:41That's as young as some kids in preschool.
- 1:44By the time Rory was seven, he was already winning golf
- 1:46tournaments for kids his age. Imagine winning a trophy before
- 1:50you even start 3rd grade. Now you might be wondering what
- 1:54exactly is golf? Golf is a sport where players
- 1:57use clubs to hit a small ball into a series of holes on a
- 1:59course using as few strokes as possible.
- 2:03A golf course usually has eighteen holes and each hole has
- 2:06a starting point called AT and an ending point called the green
- 2:10where the hole is located. The goal is to get the ball into
- 2:13the hole in the lowest number of hits.
- 2:16Golf takes a lot of patience, practice and focus.
- 2:19Rory loved golf so much that he practiced almost everyday, rain
- 2:23or shine. He would spend hours on the golf
- 2:26course working on his swing, his putting, and his aim.
- 2:29Sometimes he even practiced in his backyard.
- 2:32His parents saw how much he loved golf, so they worked hard
- 2:35so he could travel to tournaments and get the best
- 2:38equipment. Did you know that Rory could hit
- 2:41a golf ball over 40 yards when he was just two years old?
- 2:44That's almost half a football field.
- 2:46As he grew older, his skills got even better and he started
- 2:50winning more and more competitions.
- 2:52When Rory was 15 years old, he played in the Walker Cup, which
- 2:56is a big tournament for amateur golfers from Ireland and England
- 2:59against golfers from the United States.
- 3:01Competing in the Walker Cup is a big deal because it means you
- 3:05are one of the best young golfers in your country.
- 3:07After a successful amateur career, Rory decided to become a
- 3:11professional golfer in 2007 when he was only 18 years old.
- 3:16That means he started playing golf for a living against the
- 3:19best players in the world. Turning professional is a big
- 3:22step because it means you have to compete against adults who
- 3:25have been playing for many years.
- 3:27Rory quickly made a name for himself.
- 3:29He became famous for his powerful swing and his calm
- 3:33attitude on the course. In 2011, something amazing
- 3:37happened. Rory won his first major
- 3:39tournament called the US Open. A major is one of the four most
- 3:43important golf tournaments in the world.
- 3:45The US Open is played in the United States, and winning it is
- 3:49one of the highest honors in golf.
- 3:51Not only did Rory win the US Open, but he also set a
- 3:55tournament record by finishing sixteen shots under par.
- 3:58In golf, par is the number of strokes an expert golfer is
- 4:02expected to need to finish a hole or a tournament.
- 4:05Finishing sixteen shots under par means Rory played much
- 4:08better than expected. That made him famous all over
- 4:12the world. After that, Rory went on to win
- 4:15more major tournaments. He won the PGA Championship in
- 4:192012, the Open Championship in 2014, and the PGA Championship
- 4:24again in 2014. That means by the age of 25,
- 4:29Rory had already won four major championships.
- 4:32Only a few golfers in history have ever done that.
- 4:35Did you know that Rory is one of only three golfers to win 4
- 4:38majors by the age of 25? The other two are Tiger Woods
- 4:43and Jack Nicklaus, who are also very famous golfers.
- 4:46This shows just how special Rory's achievements are.
- 4:50Rory isn't just known for winning, he's also famous for
- 4:53how far he can hit the golf ball.
- 4:55In golf, there's a term called driving distance.
- 4:59This is how far a player can hit the ball from the tee with their
- 5:02first shot. Rory's average driving distance
- 5:05is over 320 yards. That's longer than three soccer
- 5:09fields placed end to end. Rory has played in golf
- 5:12tournaments all over the world. He has traveled to places like
- 5:16the United States, Australia, China, and the United Arab
- 5:20Emirates. He has seen many different golf
- 5:22courses and met lots of fans from different countries.
- 5:26Rory says that meeting fans is one of his favorite parts of
- 5:29being a golfer. But even though Rory is a
- 5:31superstar, he still remembers where he came from.
- 5:35He often visits his hometown in Northern Ireland and helps out
- 5:38with local charities. He started the Rory Foundation,
- 5:42a charity that helps children and families in need.
- 5:45Rory believes that giving back is just as important as winning
- 5:48trophies. Let's talk a little more about
- 5:50golf and why it's such a challenging sport.
- 5:53In golf, you have to be very focused because even a tiny
- 5:57mistake can make a big difference.
- 5:59The weather can also change how you play.
- 6:01If it's windy or rainy, hitting the balls straight becomes much
- 6:05harder. Golfers like Rory have to learn
- 6:08how to play in all kinds of weather.
- 6:10Another thing that makes golf interesting is the different
- 6:12types of clubs. There are drivers, irons, wedges
- 6:16and putters. Each club is used for a
- 6:19different type of shot. For example, the driver helps
- 6:22you hit the ball really far, while the putter is used to
- 6:25gently roll the ball into the hole.
- 6:27Rory is known for being great with all kinds of clubs, but
- 6:30especially with his driver and his putter.
- 6:33Golfers also need to walk a lot. A typical golf course is about
- 6:37four miles long, and a round of golf can take four or five
- 6:40hours. That's like walking all the way
- 6:43across a big City Park several times.
- 6:46Rory keeps fit by exercising and eating healthy foods.
- 6:49He says that staying in good shape helps him play better and
- 6:52feel better. Did you know that Rory has won
- 6:55more than 20 tournaments on the PGA Tour and the European Tour
- 6:58combined? The PGA Tour is a group of
- 7:01tournaments mostly in the United States, and the European Tour is
- 7:05mostly in Europe. Winning on both tours shows that
- 7:08Rory can play well anywhere in the world.
- 7:11Rory has also played in the Ryder Cup, which is a special
- 7:14team event where golfers from Europe compete against golfers
- 7:17from the United States. The Ryder Cup happens every two
- 7:20years and is one of the most exciting events in golf.
- 7:24Rory has helped Team Europe win several times, and he always
- 7:28brings lots of energy and excitement to the team.
- 7:31Sometimes golf can be really tough, and even the best players
- 7:35have bad days. Rory has talked about times when
- 7:38he didn't play as well as he wanted, but he always keeps
- 7:41trying and works hard to get better.
- 7:43He says that making mistakes is part of learning and that you
- 7:46should never give up on your dreams.
- 7:48Rory has also inspired many young golfers around the world.
- 7:52Lots of kids look up to him because he shows that with hard
- 7:55work, practice and a positive attitude, you can achieve great
- 7:59things. Rory often gives advice to young
- 8:02players, telling them to have fun, practice often and believe
- 8:05in themselves. Did you know that Rory loves
- 8:08other sports too? He enjoys playing soccer,
- 8:11watching rugby and spending time outdoors.
- 8:14He also likes reading and learning new things.
- 8:16Rory believes that having hobbies outside of golf helps
- 8:19him relax and stay happy. Rory is married to Erica Stoll
- 8:23and they have a daughter named Poppy.
- 8:26Rory says that spending time with his family is very
- 8:29important to him. Even though he travels a lot for
- 8:31golf tournaments, he always tries to be at home for special
- 8:35family moments. Let's recap what we've learned
- 8:38today about Rory McIlroy. Rory is a professional golfer
