- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:20Speaker 1: and sixteen, and we're back with another Rut Fresh Radio
- 0:23Speaker 1: episode in which we're getting you updates on the progress
- 0:25Speaker 1: of the rut, current deer activity in the tactics that
- 0:28Speaker 1: are working right now from hunters all across the country.
- 0:43Speaker 1: All right, welcome to this week's episode of Wired to
- 0:47Speaker 1: Haunts Rut Fresh Radio. It is no I am your host,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Spencer new Hearth, and we are flying solo today without
- 0:54Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon because he is pulling some all day sits
- 0:58Speaker 1: as he tries to get close to that buck he's
- 1:00Speaker 1: been hunting. Tran, I hope that you've been spending some
- 1:03Speaker 1: time in the woods too, because this is the best
- 1:06Speaker 1: time of year to be out there. As we've talked
- 1:09Speaker 1: about before, the rut only comes once a year. It's
- 1:12Speaker 1: like a ten day window where the dear movement is
- 1:16Speaker 1: the absolute best that it's going to be, and I
- 1:18Speaker 1: hope everyone has a chance to take advantage of it.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But during this part of the rut, people often talk
- 1:24Speaker 1: about the rut phase called lockdown. I think the idea
- 1:28Speaker 1: of lockdown has outgrown what this phase of the rut
- 1:32Speaker 1: actually is for most hunters. When they're talking about lockdown,
- 1:35Speaker 1: they're talking about this like two to three day window
- 1:38Speaker 1: where the doughs are now willing so the bucks will
- 1:43Speaker 1: breed them. And when that happens, a buck in a
- 1:46Speaker 1: dough will hook up and they'll bed down in some
- 1:50Speaker 1: area for almost the entire length of daylight. Um the
- 1:54Speaker 1: areas that they seem to bed down in are fairly random.
- 1:59Speaker 1: As a South Dakotain, I've seen a ton of bucks
- 2:01Speaker 1: and does locked down in the middle of a cut
- 2:03Speaker 1: cornfield where there's not a tree within like a half
- 2:06Speaker 1: mile of where they are. But then you also see
- 2:09Speaker 1: them sort of locked down in your more traditional areas
- 2:13Speaker 1: like thick timber, where dolls prefer to bed and during
- 2:16Speaker 1: this phase of the people often talk about how mature
- 2:19Speaker 1: bucks basically go from cruising at midday and being as
- 2:23Speaker 1: reckless as they will be all year to not being
- 2:27Speaker 1: seen at all because they're sat down with some doughs somewhere.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Now there's some truths and some lies about what that
- 2:35Speaker 1: actually is yes, this is like the peak breeding where
- 2:40Speaker 1: dolls are willing and bucks will find them and they'll
- 2:43Speaker 1: bed down for periods of time, But it is not
- 2:46Speaker 1: as dramatic as all of the doughs coming into estus
- 2:50Speaker 1: within like a forty eight hour window where they all
- 2:55Speaker 1: then find willing bucks and they all then stop moving
- 2:59Speaker 1: and a light that's not the case. Studies have shown
- 3:03Speaker 1: that the rut is like a bell curve, and the
- 3:06Speaker 1: top of the bell curve right now deer movement has peaked,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and sure those bucks will bed down with those doughs
- 3:14Speaker 1: for some time, but after that's over with, those bucks
- 3:16Speaker 1: are gonna get up and start cruising again and start
- 3:19Speaker 1: looking for another dough, and all of those doughs are
- 3:22Speaker 1: not entering esters at the exact same time. If you
- 3:25Speaker 1: haunted an area that has a high density of deer,
- 3:28Speaker 1: you're still going to be seeing a lot of movement.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But if you're limited to like a ten acre property,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and there's only one mature buck around and today he
- 3:38Speaker 1: locks down with some dough and he doesn't move for
- 3:40Speaker 1: eight hours, and then tomorrow he gets up and he
- 3:43Speaker 1: moves off to another property in search of doughs, then
- 3:46Speaker 1: there might be that perceived lockdown where it seems like
- 3:50Speaker 1: the bucks have stopped moving. Now that's not the reality,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and this is certainly a tougher time of year to
- 3:55Speaker 1: hunt that maybe it was a few days ago, But
- 3:58Speaker 1: if you're not in the woods, then you're only hurting
- 4:01Speaker 1: yourself because those deer are going to be up and
- 4:04Speaker 1: they're going to be moving. If you want more info
- 4:06Speaker 1: one lockdown, check out the meat eater dot com, where
- 4:09Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon has an article coming out later this week
- 4:12Speaker 1: on what you need to know about the lockdown and
- 4:14Speaker 1: how to hunt this phase of the rut. For this
- 4:17Speaker 1: week's Colors, we have Brad Beaver from Lone Wolf Tree
- 4:20Speaker 1: Stands in Indiana. Then we talked to Spencer Kaschewsky from
- 4:23Speaker 1: Red Lion Hunting in Georgia. And then we go to
- 4:26Speaker 1: North Dakota and talk to Alex Comstock from white Tail
- 4:29Speaker 1: DNA and then from Heartland bow Hunter in Kansas. We
- 4:32Speaker 1: talked to Trent Siegel, and I'll tell you before we
- 4:34Speaker 1: get into these interviews, everybody is really optimistic that we
- 4:38Speaker 1: talked to you this week, which this can kind of
- 4:41Speaker 1: be a tough time of year to keep grinding and
- 4:44Speaker 1: keep after it and stay optimistic, because if you've been
- 4:48Speaker 1: at it since early November, then you might be about
- 4:51Speaker 1: over this. But from Brad Spencer Alex Trent, you're gonna
- 4:55Speaker 1: hear some really positive and encouraging things about why you
- 4:58Speaker 1: should be in a tree right now out okay, and
- 5:01Speaker 1: let's go to our first color alright, and joining us
- 5:04Speaker 1: on the line first is Brad Beaver in Indiana from
- 5:07Speaker 1: Lone Wolf Tree stands Now. Brad in Indiana, what would
- 5:10Speaker 1: you say the bucket activity has been lately on a
- 5:12Speaker 1: scale of one to ten? Um, So I've founded Indiana
- 5:15Speaker 1: for uh three dastes straight now. I came in on Monday, um,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and I'm just I've seen a tun of buck activity. Obviously,
- 5:23Speaker 1: it's that second we can remember, so it's gonna be good.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But I would definitely put it up there nine or ten. Um.
- 5:30Speaker 1: It's just I've seen bucks with noses on the ground,
- 5:32Speaker 1: I've seen bucks running those hard so um yeah, definitely
- 5:35Speaker 1: definitely nine ten. Are you seeing a lot of midday
- 5:37Speaker 1: movement at this point? That's tough question. I haven't really
- 5:40Speaker 1: been hunting mid day because of work, UM, so I can't.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I can't say yes or remember that. Um, but I
- 5:47Speaker 1: I can't attest to obviously being being kind of peak, right.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I know a lot of guys who are hunting all day,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you know, or seeing there all day. Um, you know
- 5:56Speaker 1: this is the time if you're gonna sit all day
- 5:58Speaker 1: and and hunt the mid day, this it's want to
- 6:00Speaker 1: do it. When you're out there, you do a lot
- 6:02Speaker 1: of mobile setups. Um. How much are you moving your
- 6:06Speaker 1: stands just like an extra thirty yards closer or are
- 6:09Speaker 1: you often second guessing yourself and and moving a stand
- 6:12Speaker 1: just a little bit down a trail this time of year,
- 6:14Speaker 1: You're sticking with what you know, right, So that's a
- 6:17Speaker 1: great question. Um. Actually, tonight kind of to answer your question,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I my hunt and I I saw my target bock
- 6:24Speaker 1: to three yards off, um, and I sent them to
- 6:27Speaker 1: a woods, um, pretty far off with some dough. So
- 6:31Speaker 1: I did something a little unconventional. But because it's the
- 6:33Speaker 1: time of year and because of the running activity, um,
- 6:35Speaker 1: I'm kind of get away with it. But actually got
- 6:37Speaker 1: down half an hour from two minutes before dark and
- 6:40Speaker 1: move my stand hundred hundred ft the yards to the
- 6:43Speaker 1: east to accommodate for tomorrow's wind. Um. So I'm hoping
- 6:47Speaker 1: to actually catch them coming back to the bedding area.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But to answer your question, um, this is the time
- 6:52Speaker 1: to stay mobile, and this is the time that if
- 6:54Speaker 1: you have a book that you want to target and
- 6:57Speaker 1: do you think you can jump on, this is the
- 6:59Speaker 1: time to to do it. So obviously I saw that
- 7:02Speaker 1: book to the under guards off. I knew where he was,
- 7:04Speaker 1: so I knew I could get away with moving without
- 7:07Speaker 1: without spooking him. Whereas if I came in tomorrow morning,
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'm not sure where that book's gonna be. So, UM,
- 7:13Speaker 1: answer your question, Yeah, I this is the time to
- 7:16Speaker 1: stay mobile. What's your strategy as a bow hunter once
- 7:20Speaker 1: we approach lockdown? Um, once we approach lockdown, I kind
- 7:25Speaker 1: of go with the mentality of the only way you're
- 7:27Speaker 1: gonna kill a book cause it's that dough. If it's
- 7:30Speaker 1: the dough that he's on comes by, you know, you
- 7:32Speaker 1: can rattle and you can call it books all you
- 7:33Speaker 1: want with it. If they're locked on, does you know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: usually that's that's all they're I'm gonna pay attention to.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So as a bowner, I'd like to get into betting
- 7:41Speaker 1: areas obviously said all day if you can, Um, just
- 7:44Speaker 1: so you're kind of dough hunting at that point, Um,
- 7:47Speaker 1: if you can, if you can get on the the
- 7:49Speaker 1: dough that that he is on, um, that's about the
- 7:51Speaker 1: only thing is gonna bring him in. Are you concerned
- 7:54Speaker 1: it all this time of year with food sources? Um? Yeah,
- 7:57Speaker 1: that depends a lot on the weather. Like Indiana just
- 8:00Speaker 1: got four into the snow last night, so I've seen
- 8:02Speaker 1: a lot of digger in corn fields trying to overturn
- 8:05Speaker 1: the snow and get the corn. Um. But again, I
- 8:09Speaker 1: mean right now, being the second week in November, they're
- 8:11Speaker 1: gonna be moving in where they can, so just just
- 8:15Speaker 1: get in the woods. How about signmaking? Do you think
- 8:17Speaker 1: rubs and scrapes are still relevant at this point? I
- 8:20Speaker 1: would say so a little bit. Once we move more
- 8:23Speaker 1: towards lockdown, UM, I would say they're books are probably
- 8:26Speaker 1: gonna stop checking scrapes as often, just because they're more
- 8:29Speaker 1: concerned about that doll, like I said earlier. But um,
- 8:32Speaker 1: I personally, I always if I can find a scraper,
- 8:35Speaker 1: rub or a rub line, I'm I'm always gonna hunt it,
- 8:38Speaker 1: no no matter the time of year. Um. But again,
- 8:40Speaker 1: as we approach the lockdown, I think they're they're probably
- 8:43Speaker 1: gonna be more focused on on that actual dough than
- 8:45Speaker 1: checking the scrapes like they would knocked over. Going forward.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Then in the sex week or so, what do you
- 8:51Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be on a
- 8:53Speaker 1: scale of one to tend in Indiana, I would say
- 8:57Speaker 1: this week we're gonna be pushing. I would again put
- 9:00Speaker 1: at nine or ten. But as we approach lockdown, obviously
- 9:02Speaker 1: everybody knows, um, it's it's tough to kill a buck.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I means walking on the dough. So um, it may
- 9:08Speaker 1: come down a little bit. You may not see bucks
- 9:09Speaker 1: moving as much, um when they get locked on that door,
- 9:12Speaker 1: but it's hard to tell when when that's actually gonna happen.
- 9:15Speaker 1: So I'll keep it at nine or ten. I hate
- 9:18Speaker 1: to put it at a perfect ten, but um, the
- 9:20Speaker 1: movement I've been seeing, it's it's really good. Brad, great intel,
- 9:24Speaker 1: Good luck in Indiana, thanks for joining me, Thanks for
- 9:27Speaker 1: having me on man all right and joining us online.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Next is Spencer kind of Schewsky from Red Line Hunting
- 9:33Speaker 1: in Georgia. Spencer in Georgia, what would you say the
- 9:36Speaker 1: bucket activity has been lately on the scale of one
- 9:38Speaker 1: to ten. I think the past few weeks, I would
- 9:42Speaker 1: I would kind of consider it kind of being a
- 9:43Speaker 1: little bit more of a six out of the scale.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Uh ten, Um, But I think good things are coming.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So what phase of the run do you think most
- 9:51Speaker 1: of the state is in right now? Um? I think,
- 9:55Speaker 1: like I said, the last few weeks kind of that
- 9:56Speaker 1: early stage run activity. Um. I've heard a lot of
- 10:00Speaker 1: stories of some smaller bucks chasing some does you know,
- 10:04Speaker 1: kind of sparring a little bit. Um. And then the
- 10:07Speaker 1: last couple of days, I've gotten more stories of some
- 10:10Speaker 1: bigger Bucks coming in at um, coming in booking at
- 10:14Speaker 1: some smaller bucks as well and kind of chasing them out.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So I think we're I think we're getting geared towards
- 10:20Speaker 1: full rut here in the Atlanta area of Georgia. Are
- 10:23Speaker 1: you seeing a lot of signmaking right now? Then? Yep.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I've still still seen a lot of rubs I've noticed
- 10:29Speaker 1: actually just walked out to my spots today and have
- 10:32Speaker 1: noticed some new tree marks that I've seen, some new
- 10:35Speaker 1: rubs so that I've never seen before. What food sources
- 10:39Speaker 1: ship hunters be keyed in on right now in Georgia?
- 10:42Speaker 1: You know, I think in our area the eight corn
- 10:45Speaker 1: rolls are still pretty heavy. Um. So I think the
- 10:49Speaker 1: bucks and um, big bucks and smaller bucks are still
- 10:52Speaker 1: seeing off the natural egg corns. UM. But I've had
- 10:55Speaker 1: some good stories of you know, people using corn that
- 10:58Speaker 1: um they've They've still got some doughes coming in, but
- 11:02Speaker 1: the big ones aren't coming to the bait piles as much,
- 11:04Speaker 1: just because I think there's so many acorns out there
- 11:06Speaker 1: for them to eat. So where are your trail cameras
- 11:09Speaker 1: focused right now during this stage of the rut? Um,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I've got most of my trail cameras around some good rugs, um,
- 11:16Speaker 1: some scrape, and some trees is kind of where I
- 11:18Speaker 1: put on. I got a few good paths that I
- 11:20Speaker 1: know that the deer kind of coming through from woods
- 11:22Speaker 1: the woods. We're kind of lucky. We got a little
- 11:25Speaker 1: couple of funnel areas that we've been hunting that I
- 11:28Speaker 1: think are going to be the most successful as the
- 11:30Speaker 1: rut gets in closer. Wouldn't we get a full moon
- 11:34Speaker 1: around this time in November? Do you think that changes
- 11:37Speaker 1: anything for you and Georgia? I do, I think, Um.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I think after that fool moon in the next few days,
- 11:43Speaker 1: it's just gonna heat up more. Um. You know, if
- 11:45Speaker 1: you look at the moon phase and the days how
- 11:48Speaker 1: they're getting a little bit shorter here in Georgia. I've
- 11:50Speaker 1: always noticed that once those days start getting a little shorter,
- 11:54Speaker 1: that the road is closer and then the deer starting
- 11:56Speaker 1: to move a little bit more. Um. Along with the
- 11:59Speaker 1: cold front that's about to hit us, is I think
- 12:01Speaker 1: the rud is gonna be in full full effect here
- 12:03Speaker 1: in the next few days. Are you guys doing anything
- 12:06Speaker 1: really aggressive this time of year, like any calling your
- 12:09Speaker 1: D coin? Um? No, no on the dcoin. We had
- 12:13Speaker 1: a couple of guys do some rattles a few weeks ago.
- 12:16Speaker 1: They had some success with rattling. But I see the
- 12:19Speaker 1: last couple of days, uh, some you know, some light
- 12:21Speaker 1: grunt calls. Um, some little dough and cans is what
- 12:25Speaker 1: I've heard some success stories on. But I think, especially tomorrow,
- 12:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna be trying to use my my buck grunt
- 12:32Speaker 1: a little bit more heavily than I have in the past.
- 12:35Speaker 1: In Georgia, when do you start to expect to see
- 12:37Speaker 1: some midday cruisers. I think we're gonna start seeing some
- 12:41Speaker 1: more of the midday cruisers about this time. We've seen
- 12:45Speaker 1: some more bucks being hit on the side of the row.
- 12:48Speaker 1: You can't even you probably can't drive more than a
- 12:50Speaker 1: couple of miles about seeing a decent buck on the
- 12:52Speaker 1: side of the road, which is kind of tells us
- 12:54Speaker 1: the rud is near and the bucks are starting to
- 12:56Speaker 1: move during the day. Was exciting going forward. Then in
- 12:59Speaker 1: the next week or so, what do you think that
- 13:01Speaker 1: bucket at TV is going to be on a scale
- 13:03Speaker 1: of one to ten in Georgia? I think with the
- 13:06Speaker 1: cold front coming in and in the weather in Georgia,
- 13:10Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's gonna be a nine out
- 13:11Speaker 1: of ten, ten out of ten. You know, here in
- 13:14Speaker 1: Georgia we really don't see the weather getting down into
- 13:17Speaker 1: the twenties. And the fact that it's happening right at
- 13:20Speaker 1: the perfect time of rut, I think the potential has
- 13:23Speaker 1: gonna be huge expensive. With good luck to you in
- 13:25Speaker 1: the games from Red Light Hunting. Thanks for joining me.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Thank you so much, Spencer, all right
- 13:31Speaker 1: and joining us on the line. Next is Alex comp
- 13:33Speaker 1: stock from White Tailed DNA in North Dakota. Now Alex
- 13:36Speaker 1: in North Dakota. What would you say the bucket activity
- 13:39Speaker 1: is ben lately on a scale of one to ten, Yeah,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I put it probably at about a five or six.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I've been out here for about ten days and it's
- 13:48Speaker 1: a It hasn't been constant movement, but it's kind of
- 13:51Speaker 1: coming spurts, and I've seen a good amount of matur
- 13:54Speaker 1: bucks and um. I've seen everything from chasing to cruising
- 13:59Speaker 1: to mid day move it, but it just hasn't been
- 14:01Speaker 1: like the constant sass and furious. It's just been kind
- 14:03Speaker 1: of coming and going in spurts. That makes sense. Five
- 14:06Speaker 1: or six seems really low for this time of year.
- 14:08Speaker 1: What do you think are the factors that are making
- 14:11Speaker 1: this the worst rut in North Dakota. Yeah, I think
- 14:15Speaker 1: the biggest thing that's affected me is there's a lot
- 14:17Speaker 1: of corner and UM. This year in North Dakota, it
- 14:19Speaker 1: was really wet and so farmers weren't able to get
- 14:22Speaker 1: to the crops as as soon as they normally do,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and so there's a ton of standing corner around me
- 14:27Speaker 1: and uh, I think that's having an effect on some
- 14:30Speaker 1: of the lack of deer that I've seen. It would
- 14:34Speaker 1: be kind of my guess you've founded North Dakota for
- 14:37Speaker 1: a while. This year, with there being so many standing crops,
- 14:40Speaker 1: how does that change some of your sort of traditional
- 14:43Speaker 1: rut setups. Do you have tree stands at different locations
- 14:46Speaker 1: to factory in for all the standing corn? Yeah, so
- 14:48Speaker 1: I really wasn't prepared for that, being I used to
- 14:50Speaker 1: live out in North Dakota, so it was easier for
- 14:53Speaker 1: me to adapt, but now being having to travel out here, UM,
- 14:57Speaker 1: I did move a couple of stands closer to corn.
- 14:59Speaker 1: M couple of my like go to. I guess I
- 15:02Speaker 1: would call funnel areas where deer usually traveling like a
- 15:06Speaker 1: really good example, as I have a skinny pinch I travel.
- 15:09Speaker 1: It goes north and south, and deer always traveling through there.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Um this year, a lot of traffics going east and
- 15:15Speaker 1: west going from into the standing corn. And so I've
- 15:18Speaker 1: tried to change a little bit and I've got a
- 15:20Speaker 1: couple of stands real tight to that corn. So what
- 15:23Speaker 1: are you ideally looking for as a public land bow
- 15:26Speaker 1: hunter during this time of year. I'm looking for areas
- 15:29Speaker 1: that just aren't being hunted in North Katota. That's usually
- 15:32Speaker 1: pretty easy to find. UM. Rifle season open here last week,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and uh that didn't really change much for me. I
- 15:39Speaker 1: did something I do a little bit of, uh scouting
- 15:42Speaker 1: around the hunter pressure I'll drive. I got down on
- 15:45Speaker 1: Saturday midday and figured if anyone was raffle hunting, they'd
- 15:48Speaker 1: probably still be out all day, so they only have
- 15:50Speaker 1: the weekend, and so drove around looks for other hunters,
- 15:54Speaker 1: um figured where they were, which there was just a couple,
- 15:57Speaker 1: and then kind of made game plans from there. So
- 15:59Speaker 1: what is the route would you say that we're in
- 16:01Speaker 1: right now in North Dakota, I'd say we were in
- 16:04Speaker 1: definitely like the seeking and chasing phase. Um. I mean
- 16:08Speaker 1: I'd say there's probably breeding going on too, I had,
- 16:11Speaker 1: you know right now. It seems to me that when
- 16:13Speaker 1: you have a hot doll round, I mean, as always
- 16:17Speaker 1: is during the run, it can be a game changer.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I mean I had the other morning I said, I
- 16:21Speaker 1: had what I assumed to be a hot dog around
- 16:23Speaker 1: me because I had eight bucks on her. And then today,
- 16:27Speaker 1: for example, I saw nine different doughs and didn't see
- 16:29Speaker 1: one buck. So I think when you have that that
- 16:33Speaker 1: right dough in the area, that can really change everything.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Right now, when we get into lockdown in the six
- 16:38Speaker 1: week or so, what do your setups look like then,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I'm trying to get in those either as are the
- 16:44Speaker 1: really thick areas where I think bucks are me pinning
- 16:46Speaker 1: dose down um or getting in between dough bedding areas, because,
- 16:51Speaker 1: especially on North Dakota, I found that fifteen can be
- 16:55Speaker 1: a really good time frame get between doll bedding areas
- 16:58Speaker 1: and hopefully you can get time at right where you
- 17:00Speaker 1: know a buck's getting off one dough and looking for
- 17:02Speaker 1: the next. You'd be in those travel corridors. Um. I've
- 17:05Speaker 1: had some really good hunts out here that time of year.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Do you think signmaking is relevant at all in that
- 17:10Speaker 1: part of the country right now? Not? I don't think so.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Right now. I've been here since able the fourth. Those
- 17:15Speaker 1: first couple of days, scrapes were still being hit. I
- 17:19Speaker 1: mean I watched a couple of bucks hit scrapes and
- 17:21Speaker 1: they were kind of being opened up every day. UM.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But in the last few days I haven't noticed any
- 17:25Speaker 1: scrapes or any new rubs or anything going like that
- 17:28Speaker 1: going forward. Then, in the sext week or so, what
- 17:30Speaker 1: do you think that buck activity is going to be
- 17:32Speaker 1: on the scale of one to tend in North Dakota. Yeah,
- 17:35Speaker 1: I'd like to think it'd be in that seven to
- 17:37Speaker 1: eight range UM this time of year, kind of between
- 17:41Speaker 1: that fifteenth and twentieth I found to be some of
- 17:44Speaker 1: the best honey and I've experienced out in North Dakota.
- 17:47Speaker 1: And uh, I'm hoping with the temperatures are actually gonna
- 17:49Speaker 1: be trending up a little bit, which I think will
- 17:51Speaker 1: help me because it's been so cold here. I mean
- 17:55Speaker 1: with the windshield today. It was about negative fifteen this
- 17:58Speaker 1: morning and it was just miserable. And I don't know,
- 18:00Speaker 1: I think sometimes you might just be hunkering down when
- 18:02Speaker 1: I gets to be that cold. And hopefully in the
- 18:04Speaker 1: next week it uh it picks up even a little more, alright,
- 18:07Speaker 1: as I hope things turn around for you and your
- 18:09Speaker 1: public land haunt in North Dakota. Good luck and thanks
- 18:12Speaker 1: for joining me, all right, Thanks Spencer, alright and joining
- 18:15Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Trent SEAgel and Kansas
- 18:18Speaker 1: from heart Lamb bow Hunter. Now Trent in Kansas. What
- 18:21Speaker 1: would you say the bucket activity has been lately On
- 18:23Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, I'd say it's been
- 18:26Speaker 1: a nine lately. I've seen a ton of bucks cruising
- 18:30Speaker 1: and chasing fighting. Um, I'm only giving it a nine
- 18:35Speaker 1: right now because I just haven't seen a lot of
- 18:38Speaker 1: big ones in person. Yet I know they're moving out there. Um,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I just haven't seen them. So what phase of the
- 18:44Speaker 1: road would you say that the state of Kansas is
- 18:46Speaker 1: in right now? I think we're approaching um lockdown here.
- 18:50Speaker 1: I mean it's it's close for sure. I've definitely seen
- 18:54Speaker 1: bucks with does um obviously they're they're fighting for him.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I think going forward this week, I'm I'm definitely gonna
- 19:03Speaker 1: be focused on hunting the dough areas and and just
- 19:06Speaker 1: hoping the right dough brings a big guy out in
- 19:09Speaker 1: front of me. If you think we're approaching lockdown, how
- 19:12Speaker 1: much longer do you expect to see some of that
- 19:14Speaker 1: midday movement among bucks? Oh? I think it's still gonna
- 19:18Speaker 1: be good. Um we I mean we here in Kansas
- 19:22Speaker 1: have a pretty good buck to dough ratio. Um. So,
- 19:27Speaker 1: I mean we're still going to see lots of deer
- 19:29Speaker 1: moving all day long. I feel like, especially because the
- 19:31Speaker 1: weather is pretty decent. But the big ones three, they're
- 19:35Speaker 1: gonna be coming out with the dos or just you know,
- 19:38Speaker 1: searching for that next one as soon as they're done
- 19:40Speaker 1: with the one there with. So, I still think it's
- 19:43Speaker 1: gonna be a great week when we do get into
- 19:45Speaker 1: that lockdown phase. What is your strategy? Paint us a
- 19:48Speaker 1: picture of where you want your treatsy and to be
- 19:52Speaker 1: during that phase of the rout. Absolutely. Um So mornings,
- 19:56Speaker 1: I typically try to get tucked up close to a
- 20:00Speaker 1: an area I know a lot of doughs bed and
- 20:02Speaker 1: just try to catch a buck cruising scent checking that area. Um.
- 20:07Speaker 1: And then in the evenings or afternoons later in the day,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I'll slip out and try to relocate to a good
- 20:13Speaker 1: food source, a big food plot I might have, or
- 20:17Speaker 1: um any standing crops that are still there that all
- 20:19Speaker 1: the doughs are hitten And just like I said before,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I hope, I hope the right dough brings a big
- 20:24Speaker 1: boy out. Has this season been to struggle at all
- 20:27Speaker 1: to get deer on your food plot with all the
- 20:29Speaker 1: standing crops? Yes, um, absolutely it's been a struggle to
- 20:35Speaker 1: to find them. I feel like, um, we've had so
- 20:39Speaker 1: many crops in and just it hasn't condensed the deer
- 20:44Speaker 1: down to their normal areas at this point in the
- 20:46Speaker 1: season for sure, with all the food everywhere and um,
- 20:50Speaker 1: you know lots more bedding areas or places to hide.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Do you pay attention to trail cameras at all this
- 20:57Speaker 1: time of year, and where do you have most of
- 20:58Speaker 1: those set up as approach lockdown? Uh, most of my
- 21:02Speaker 1: cameras right now are UM. I have a lot set
- 21:06Speaker 1: up on time ons mode on on big food plots
- 21:09Speaker 1: for the afternoon, and then lots of them on trails
- 21:13Speaker 1: or scraped Still even though the the bucks aren't hitting
- 21:17Speaker 1: the scrapes as much, it will still catch movement going by. UM,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and I do. I do use them a lot still.
- 21:24Speaker 1: One of the best strategies I have is if it's
- 21:27Speaker 1: windy out or have the white right wind direction to
- 21:30Speaker 1: something to kind of cover my noise, I'll check him,
- 21:33Speaker 1: um and try to figure out if if there's a
- 21:36Speaker 1: buck in that area that morning. UM, generally that afternoon
- 21:42Speaker 1: he's going to be there too. And that's usually my
- 21:44Speaker 1: my best sits. UM if I can flip in if
- 21:47Speaker 1: it's windy enough to I'm like say, cover my scent
- 21:50Speaker 1: or my noise, anything like that. Um. If if he
- 21:53Speaker 1: was on that camera in the morning, nine times out
- 21:55Speaker 1: of ten, he's gonna be coming back out with the
- 21:57Speaker 1: dough or something like that in the afternoon. And UM,
- 22:00Speaker 1: because they're usually my best sits, most of the country
- 22:04Speaker 1: just had a cold snap roll through Kansas not excluded.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Do you think that really helps dear movement? You said
- 22:11Speaker 1: that you've had some really good midday cruising or do
- 22:14Speaker 1: you think this time of year that's not really a factor.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I I do think it matters. Um, the last two days,
- 22:20Speaker 1: the pressure has just been through the roof and I've
- 22:23Speaker 1: hunted about the last ten out of eleven days. And
- 22:27Speaker 1: the movement alone just on what I saw last night
- 22:31Speaker 1: and then cell cams today was just incredible. I mean
- 22:35Speaker 1: all day deer, We're we're moving both days. Um, and
- 22:39Speaker 1: the pressure I think yesterday was around thirty point seven
- 22:42Speaker 1: and today it was, you know, around thirty point five. So, UM,
- 22:46Speaker 1: it definitely makes a big difference. I mean, we still
- 22:49Speaker 1: see good movement this time of year, but I still
- 22:51Speaker 1: feel like if if it's not this cold and high
- 22:55Speaker 1: pressure system, UM, we just see that movement that first
- 22:58Speaker 1: the first thing in the morning, the kind of last
- 23:01Speaker 1: hour or so, a light But the last two days
- 23:04Speaker 1: it's been incredible all day long going forward. Then in
- 23:07Speaker 1: the sex week or so, what do you think that
- 23:08Speaker 1: BUCKETTVT is going to be on a scale of one
- 23:11Speaker 1: to ten in Kansas? I still think it's gonna be
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know, nine or ten. I mean, this is the
- 23:17Speaker 1: time of year. Any of you guys out there, if
- 23:20Speaker 1: you have days the vacation to burn or a day off.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I mean, everybody getting the stand right now. This is
- 23:26Speaker 1: what we as whitetail hunters dream about. We live three
- 23:30Speaker 1: hundred and what forty days out of the year for
- 23:34Speaker 1: these you know, this month of November. Um, get out
- 23:38Speaker 1: there and hunt, enjoy it. Why you can take it
- 23:40Speaker 1: all in, watch God's creation, and um, just be thankful
- 23:45Speaker 1: we get to hunt in this great country. I like
- 23:47Speaker 1: your optimism. Good luck to you and the gas from
- 23:49Speaker 1: Hartland bow Hunter. Thanks for joining me, Trent, appreciate it.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Good luck man. And that concludes this week's episode of
- 23:56Speaker 1: rut Fresh Radio. Thanks to Brad Spencer, Alex and Trent
- 23:59Speaker 1: from joining me, and thank you guys for listening. I
- 24:02Speaker 1: hope everyone's in the woods for these last few days
- 24:05Speaker 1: of the absolute best time of year. We will talk
- 24:07Speaker 1: to you guys next week, but until then, stay wired.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Haunt
