Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Lots of fun. So welcome to Heavy Mag.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Thanks. Thanks for having us.
- 0:04Speaker 3: You're obviously, as good listeners and viewers know, that you
- 0:07Speaker 3: are part of the all-time good band Skunk Hour, which
- 0:11Speaker 3: you guys have been around, feels like forever now. That's
- 0:13Speaker 3: just showing my age. So when did you guys formally start?
- 0:21Speaker 2: 90-something, wasn't it? Yeah, early 90s. Yeah. 92, we first
- 0:25Speaker 2: got together.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And then we... Borrowed some money from someone who had
- 0:35Speaker 2: an uncle who had a 10K we could borrow from him.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah, always good.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Did a formal document. We did an album pretty quickly
- 0:48Speaker 2: after forming.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, we got that out on an indie label. We
- 0:52Speaker 2: started our own whatever, you call it, some freaking fantastical name.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We called it Beast Records and then we got it. Nice. Yeah,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and we got a distribution deal through what was then
- 1:07Speaker 2: called ID Records, which is an arm of Polygram, which
- 1:10Speaker 2: is now Universal. And then from there, yeah, we got
- 1:14Speaker 2: a bit of cut through and, yeah, went from there.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I made some traction pretty quick after that.
- 1:21Speaker 3: So you guys certainly have done the rounds of Australia
- 1:26Speaker 3: and overseas by now and very well known and very
- 1:29Speaker 3: well loved and, Yeah, you guys are doing a, is
- 1:32Speaker 3: it an anniversary tour that you're doing now or is
- 1:34Speaker 3: it just because?
- 1:36Speaker 2: No, it's not an anniversary. We're calling it the Back
- 1:39Speaker 2: to Basics Tour. We're getting to some places that we
- 1:43Speaker 2: haven't been for a long time.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Back to Basics is one of the songs off that
- 1:48Speaker 2: first album.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We're getting around, we're doing 14 different towns and cities.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, excellent.
- 1:57Speaker 2: The second album that's coming up now this weekend, we're
- 2:00Speaker 2: doing South East Queensland and Byron Bay.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It's been a while since you guys have.
- 2:06Speaker 2: story from Lismore.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 2: That's where the band was formed.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Everyone's fallen back into Sydney because we all went, when
- 2:17Speaker 2: the band broke up in 2001, in the subsequent years
- 2:21Speaker 2: to that, we kind of spread. to the four corners
- 2:25Speaker 2: of Australia and the globe. I moved to America. Yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I tried my hand there in LA, which was great. Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 2: And then guitarists went to South Australia. Other guys went
- 2:35Speaker 2: back up to the far north coast. Yeah. But we're
- 2:39Speaker 2: all back in Sydney now, which makes it a lot
- 2:41Speaker 2: easier with all the travel.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It would. Yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Zoom is only so good for rehearsals so far, I think.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:51Speaker 2: We even had a– we've got a killer drummer now.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Like there's four original members.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:57Speaker 2: My brother Del, who's the MC, and then Dean, the
- 3:01Speaker 2: bass player, Dean Sullivan, Warwick Scott, the guitarist. But we've
- 3:05Speaker 2: got some fantastic new members. Yeah. One of those guys
- 3:10Speaker 2: is a drummer, Carlos Adura, of Chilean descent, who's an
- 3:16Speaker 2: absolute gun. Yeah. We took him on even though he
- 3:21Speaker 2: was living in the Gold Coast.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And we would just fly him to Sydney before every
- 3:29Speaker 2: tour and we would rehearse and then bounce out of
- 3:31Speaker 2: there and then he'd go back to the Gold Coast
- 3:33Speaker 2: and we'd kind of, you know, we'd have to play,
- 3:36Speaker 2: you know, we've got to play whatever, Adelaide. So we'd
- 3:39Speaker 2: just fly him to there and us to there and
- 3:41Speaker 2: everyone would go back their separate ways. We'd just converge
- 3:43Speaker 2: on whichever place we're playing. But now he's in Sydney
- 3:46Speaker 2: as well because... Yeah, he's a single man. Look out, ladies.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Oh, Chilean. Spicy. Spicy. We like them spicy.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Well, Gold Coast is– I'm right on the border of
- 4:00Speaker 3: northern New South Wales and Gold Coast, so it's definitely
- 4:03Speaker 3: the best part.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Of the world. I'm not going to lie. It's a
- 4:05Speaker 2: fantastic part of the world.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 2: We always enjoy coming up there. This is always the
- 4:10Speaker 2: best leg of any tour when you get to go.
- 4:13Speaker 3: It's been a while since you've done like Cooley. I
- 4:15Speaker 3: thought you– I can't even remember. Yeah, I think you
- 4:20Speaker 3: vaguely may have been in the 90s, some late 90s,
- 4:23Speaker 3: I think, maybe early 2000s.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah. It's been a long time.
- 4:26Speaker 3: And I think the last time you guys were planning
- 4:29Speaker 3: to do a show with Catch and Dave on Resin
- 4:33Speaker 3: Docs in Byron, but that didn't happen for various reasons
- 4:37Speaker 3: with yourselves and them.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of stuff going on. Yeah. between the guys. So.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah. I work with them.
- 4:43Speaker 3: That's my other, when I'm not doing a heavy, I
- 4:45Speaker 3: help run the labels.
- 4:46Speaker 2: You know, you know, what they do.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Oh, amazing.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So, but yeah, again, that, and that was, I was
- 4:53Speaker 3: really looking forward to that, that back room. So again,
- 4:55Speaker 3: the good old back room of Byron Bay, it's seen some,
- 4:58Speaker 3: he's got some stories.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Now we're playing, we've always played the great Northern, but
- 5:03Speaker 2: now on this one, we're doing the arts factory.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Again, we haven't played since the nineties. Yeah. Um, someone's
- 5:10Speaker 2: resurrected it and they're doing good shows there.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yeah. There's been a few.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Recently at the old arts factory, which they used to
- 5:18Speaker 3: have the piggery back in the day and a few
- 5:19Speaker 3: of those around.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Yes.
- 5:22Speaker 1: If you're a local, you know. Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 2: And then.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Like the playroom.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, the playroom. Fuck, we played the playroom.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That was some great.
- 5:33Speaker 2: We played the playroom and then we were staying. Yeah.
- 5:36Speaker 2: A little ways up the road on the main drag. Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 2: There was a motel, and it was a horseshoe-shaped motel,
- 5:42Speaker 2: the classic, you know, horseshoe motel with a pool in
- 5:45Speaker 2: the middle.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:46Speaker 2: And Del and I were sharing a bedroom, and in
- 5:50Speaker 2: the middle of the night, each had a single bed
- 5:52Speaker 2: on each side of the room. In the middle of
- 5:53Speaker 2: the night, Del went, Aya, Aya, wake up. And I
- 5:59Speaker 2: woke up, and I'm lying on my back, and I
- 6:02Speaker 2: look down at the bottom of the bed, and there's
- 6:05Speaker 2: this figure just slumped, just sitting on the bed like
- 6:08Speaker 2: that in the dark. there's a person, there's a guy
- 6:12Speaker 2: just sitting in the dark on the edge of my bed.
- 6:16Speaker 1: That's terrifying.
- 6:17Speaker 2: In the dark, in the shadows. And I just flicked
- 6:20Speaker 2: on the light and just jumped up and made myself
- 6:21Speaker 2: as big as I can. Oh, my God.
- 6:23Speaker 1: What are you doing, man?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Fuck you. And, like, you know, probably only got, like,
- 6:28Speaker 2: boxer shorts on or something. And I'm just freaking out,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, and turn the light on and there's this
- 6:33Speaker 2: guy and he's drunk. Like, I thought it was something
- 6:35Speaker 2: sinister or in the dark.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'm like, this is fucking weird.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And then... He's just this drunk guy, like, swaying.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Oh, no, the sways.
- 6:45Speaker 2: He's gone into the wrong room. It's got all those
- 6:48Speaker 2: sliding door rooms and a horseshoe motel around it. And
- 6:51Speaker 2: this guy's wandered home off his face. And he ended
- 6:54Speaker 2: up in our room trying to take his shoes off
- 6:57Speaker 2: on my bed, thinking he's about to go to bed.
- 6:59Speaker 2: He would have got a shock.
- 7:00Speaker 1: What a rude surprise if he laid down. Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 2: So, yeah, that's the last one. Playroom.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's a car park now. It's sad.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Lovely. Tony Mitchell would have something to say about that.
- 7:11Speaker 3: So what are some of your most memorable moments, I guess,
- 7:15Speaker 3: from touring around the globe that you can say legally,
- 7:21Speaker 3: I guess?
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yes. That's a good qualifier. We had some great times
- 7:31Speaker 2: in Europe. Yeah. Turning up for our second tour of Europe,
- 7:35Speaker 2: we were headlining because our first tour of Europe we
- 7:37Speaker 2: were supporting an English band that had a good profile. um,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and yeah, pulling into like, um, into Milan or, um,
- 7:47Speaker 2: Lawrence and, and seeing his queue down the, down the
- 7:52Speaker 2: street and wondering who that was for and then realizing
- 7:54Speaker 2: it was for us. Wow. Yeah. That second tour where
- 7:58Speaker 2: we started to kind of pull like 1000 per show,
- 8:00Speaker 2: which is really cool.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Wow.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Yeah. That was great. Um, the, the early, um, What
- 8:10Speaker 2: was the name of Brandon Saul's first festival that he
- 8:14Speaker 2: did in Byron?
- 8:15Speaker 3: Oh, was it Homebake, something like that, or Byron 95?
- 8:18Speaker 3: It was like a New Year's Eve festival.
- 8:20Speaker 2: It was like 94, but it was like.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Yeah, Byron 95, it was like a New Year's Eve
- 8:24Speaker 3: festival at Boulangerie.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And then there was Homebake and then.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I think it was.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Just Byron Bay Music Fest, I think it was called originally.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was. And that was the precursor
- 8:34Speaker 2: to the well-known, what was the one that was huge
- 8:36Speaker 2: for years there?
- 8:37Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Not on Blues Fest.
- 8:41Speaker 2: No, the other one.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Oh, there was Splendour and then there was.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Splendour.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, which was not Byron Bay. It was actually
- 8:48Speaker 3: just with the young Pottsville.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Just down the road. It ended up. They called it
- 8:53Speaker 1: Byron Bay. I'm like, no, it's not.
- 8:56Speaker 2: First.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Splendour.
- 8:58Speaker 2: They had Powderfinger. Yeah. Headlining one night and we headlined
- 9:03Speaker 2: the other night. It was a two day.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah, nice.
- 9:06Speaker 2: And huge crowd. Yeah. And then it started raining.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Oh, yes, yes, yes.
- 9:13Speaker 2: It's amazing, yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 2: That was a great one.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I vividly remember.
- 9:17Speaker 2: That was your memory. And then another time playing to
- 9:21Speaker 2: like five people in Wyala and the in-house, the production
- 9:26Speaker 2: that they supplied was so bad.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:29Speaker 2: That I dismantled. I was so upset with my wedges,
- 9:32Speaker 2: my monitor wedges, because they were just squeaking and squawking
- 9:35Speaker 2: at me. Oh, no. Shit. And I just dismantled the
- 9:39Speaker 2: whole thing while I was singing. I dismantled the whole
- 9:42Speaker 2: thing and just put it all down on the floor.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It's like five people in this, you know, for those
- 9:48Speaker 2: kids who are supposed to do to help us get
- 9:51Speaker 2: around the country in between the big cities.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:54Speaker 2: That was me having a tantrum about monitors.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Fair enough.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Launching myself at a punter who threw a beer bottle
- 10:04Speaker 2: at our bass player in Victor Harbour. Yeah. And landing
- 10:08Speaker 2: on top of him, which was good. So he used
- 10:12Speaker 2: the barricade and launched out to him. That was fun. Oh, God.
- 10:16Speaker 2: And then, yeah, we've been fortunate that we've played a lot.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah what would have been good is he picked the
- 10:22Speaker 3: beer bottle up and just started doing a slide with
- 10:23Speaker 3: it on the base.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah no.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Yeah so i can imagine you guys have had some
- 10:33Speaker 3: epic memories.
- 10:34Speaker 2: We we michael chug asked us to support he's a
- 10:37Speaker 2: great promoter from the 80s and 90s yeah and a
- 10:40Speaker 2: great bloke um and big figure in the australian music
- 10:44Speaker 2: industry he He liked us. He didn't really understand us,
- 10:48Speaker 2: but he liked us.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys were a bit before your time, weren't you?
- 10:51Speaker 1: Definitely unique.
- 10:54Speaker 2: And Ice Cube was coming out from NWA and supported
- 10:59Speaker 2: by Cypress Hill.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Yeah, wow.
- 11:01Speaker 2: That's massive. He said, I want you guys on the bill.
- 11:04Speaker 2: And he kind of really pressured. And we're going, mate,
- 11:06Speaker 2: we're not hip-hop. We have an MC. We're not hip-hop.
- 11:10Speaker 2: We've got all these other things going on. We're a
- 11:12Speaker 2: live band. We're a singer. Yeah. And so we go
- 11:15Speaker 2: on and there's all these kids, hardcore, diehard hip-hop kids,
- 11:20Speaker 2: Gordon Pavillion, thousands of people, you know, 5,000, whatever it is. Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And they're looking at us, come on, with this kind
- 11:28Speaker 2: of weird fusion kind of thing. And they just start
- 11:32Speaker 2: throwing shit. And they threw for the whole 30 minutes
- 11:36Speaker 2: we played. Like batteries, coins. Oh, no. Anything small and heavy.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And the first night we were like, fuck, this is crazy.
- 11:45Speaker 2: The second night we were kind of like doing the,
- 11:48Speaker 2: what's the thing from The Matrix, you know, we were
- 11:50Speaker 2: doing the dodging.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Going and kind of got into it and that was
- 11:57Speaker 2: pretty fun. There was a lot of weed being smoked
- 11:59Speaker 2: backstage at that gig. Oh, yeah. The amount of weed,
- 12:03Speaker 2: Ice Cube and Cypress Hill's dressing room was insane. It
- 12:06Speaker 2: was just like a full pall of smoke just hanging up.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Up in smoke.
- 12:13Speaker 2: From like.
- 12:14Speaker 3: You'd have been stoned just from being backstage.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Imagine if Snoop Dogg had entered the building as well.
- 12:21Speaker 3: It would just be off-cap. It would have been wild.
- 12:25Speaker 3: That is, yeah, I can imagine. So, yes, it's a
- 12:30Speaker 3: shame they didn't just chill the rest of the audience out.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That would have been nice. Just go with the flow, dude.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Get in the zone.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Good humour and by the end of it we won
- 12:40Speaker 2: a few of them over but Yeah, no. We shouldn't
- 12:43Speaker 2: ever have been on that bill.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Yeah, well, it would be interesting to see, you know,
- 12:48Speaker 3: from that time, you know, those kids being exposed to
- 12:50Speaker 3: yourselves for the first time and how many of them
- 12:53Speaker 3: are still fans and, you know, went from there to
- 12:57Speaker 3: follow on. You know, stranger things have happened, I always say.
- 13:00Speaker 2: There were some great Aussie hip-hop bands that should have
- 13:02Speaker 2: been on that bill. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Aussie hip-hop, you know, I really think it's underrated.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Like, you know, it's... You know, being fortunate enough to
- 13:10Speaker 3: work in the circles that I have, you know, these
- 13:13Speaker 3: kids are doing it now. It's like, bro, this guy's
- 13:15Speaker 3: been doing it 30 years well before you, you know. So, yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 3: it's definitely earned its place and, you know, they are incredible.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And I love, two things I love is metal and
- 13:26Speaker 3: rap and hip-hop and when they fuse together, perfection.
- 13:31Speaker 1: That's where the goodness lies.
- 13:32Speaker 2: The greatest show I've ever seen or the most impactful
- 13:34Speaker 2: show I've ever seen was Rage Against the Machine. Oh, yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my signature song.
- 13:39Speaker 2: The guy who was their engineer, they had limiters on
- 13:45Speaker 2: the front of house system so that nobody could go
- 13:50Speaker 2: beyond a certain noise limit.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Output. But the guy from Ray James' machine, they brought
- 13:59Speaker 2: their own engineer. He had bolt cutters and he cut
- 14:04Speaker 2: the things that are open that are. So it's like
- 14:07Speaker 2: a plane or one of those plastics. casings yeah cut
- 14:10Speaker 2: it and he got in there and he ripped all
- 14:11Speaker 2: the limiters off and so they were playing like it
- 14:13Speaker 2: was like nick cave was on that gear we're about
- 14:16Speaker 2: to be on that okay this.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Is in we're about to be in sydney in.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Sydney at the show at this old showground yeah and
- 14:23Speaker 2: yeah like bjork was on that tricky the hip-hop trip-hop
- 14:27Speaker 2: artist was on that all kinds of great bands it's
- 14:30Speaker 2: a phenomenal lineup um and yeah nick cave and then
- 14:35Speaker 2: i was raging in this machine and they went The
- 14:38Speaker 2: volume would have been here all day, you know, about 65%.
- 14:40Speaker 2: And they got it to like 95%. The whole thing
- 14:43Speaker 2: just went boom. Oh, my God. And the whole fucking place,
- 14:48Speaker 2: like from everybody from the stands or to the back.
- 14:51Speaker 1: You could just see the wave go through the crowd.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a wave of energy that just rushed in.
- 14:56Speaker 2: And it was 50% louder than the previous thing. And
- 15:00Speaker 2: they were absolutely incendiary in terms of their performances. Yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 2: And then Soundgarden had to come on after them, which
- 15:08Speaker 2: was impossible. Like you couldn't match up.
- 15:11Speaker 1: What a lineup. That's sensational.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Like poor Soundgarden because you don't want to follow Rage
- 15:17Speaker 2: Against the Machine. It doesn't matter who you are. Anyway,
- 15:20Speaker 2: but they still played well, but yeah, Rage Against the
- 15:23Speaker 2: Machine was incredible.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, they're iconic.
- 15:27Speaker 3: That would be a nice one to see get back
- 15:29Speaker 3: together and do a tour, but I'm highly down it's
- 15:31Speaker 3: going to happen. They're timeless. Absolutely timeless. Phenomenal band. But yeah, that's,
- 15:38Speaker 3: I know there was stories, I was reading a post
- 15:41Speaker 3: not that long back and it was about, you know,
- 15:42Speaker 3: the loudest band that you'd ever heard and all these
- 15:44Speaker 3: people commenting and I forget who it was. I don't
- 15:46Speaker 3: know if it was Rage or it might have been some,
- 15:49Speaker 3: whether it was Metallica, but whatever.
- 15:52Speaker 1: It was, they actually cracked the stage when they were playing.
- 15:54Speaker 1: It was just insane. It was just that loud. It
- 15:58Speaker 1: was crazy.
- 16:00Speaker 3: But yeah, it's like last year when I was at Z50,
- 16:03Speaker 3: I was at the front and when the guys come
- 16:06Speaker 3: on and because the whole day was great but they
- 16:08Speaker 3: just cranked it up and the triangles were like rattling
- 16:10Speaker 3: off the front of the stage and there's something in
- 16:12Speaker 3: the media trying to prop them up and take photos
- 16:14Speaker 3: at the same time but yeah that was good so
- 16:16Speaker 3: that's the new challenge for Z51 is if you can
- 16:18Speaker 3: rattle the triangles off the stage you're.
- 16:20Speaker 2: In that's the litmus.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Test absolutely but yeah no it's so um you know
- 16:26Speaker 3: with the you know yourselves with the crowds over the
- 16:29Speaker 3: years have you seen you know obviously you know some
- 16:31Speaker 3: of your favorites you've come back and But have you seen,
- 16:34Speaker 3: you know, you've got some new young fans that are
- 16:37Speaker 3: in there as well or is it next?
- 16:38Speaker 2: Which is remarkable. Yeah. Some of the shows, especially in
- 16:45Speaker 2: Sydney and Melbourne.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 2: And a bit in Adelaide where we're getting a big
- 16:54Speaker 2: dose of young people.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 16:56Speaker 2: I think it's a full generational jump to kids who,
- 17:02Speaker 2: had been exposed to their parents listening to it. And
- 17:04Speaker 2: then what they've done is they've gone out to other mates.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Have you heard this? And then you're creating this, getting
- 17:10Speaker 2: this little, this little cohorts coming along.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Yeah. I guess it's a bit like, you know, us
- 17:14Speaker 3: listening to the doors and violent fames, like when we
- 17:17Speaker 3: were teenagers and you know, that same sort of trend.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. You go into your parents' record collection and
- 17:23Speaker 2: you're like, what the fuck's this? And some diehards. Like
- 17:27Speaker 2: we've got a whole lot of young people who come
- 17:30Speaker 2: to our shows and know Literally, we can pull out
- 17:33Speaker 2: a song that we haven't played.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:35Speaker 2: It's an album track.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Albums.
- 17:39Speaker 2: And they will know every lyric.
- 17:40Speaker 1: That's crazy, isn't it? It's wild.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Yeah. It's really, it's a good feeling.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And, you know, then you have those
- 17:50Speaker 1: pockets of goodness too.
- 17:51Speaker 3: You might find yourself on a Spotify playlist somewhere that
- 17:53Speaker 3: randomly that, you know, the kid's like, oh, my God,
- 17:56Speaker 3: have you heard this new song? And they think it's
- 17:58Speaker 3: new and it's like, yeah, it's a dull bit. You
- 18:00Speaker 3: see that happen quite a lot and it always makes
- 18:02Speaker 3: me giggle.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 3: The technology does sometimes have its good sides and I
- 18:07Speaker 3: think that's one of them where you can just really
- 18:09Speaker 3: see that it just doesn't make sense otherwise.
- 18:11Speaker 1: It's like, how do you know this? Yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And so have you guys got any new music that
- 18:17Speaker 3: you've been working on or plan to?
- 18:19Speaker 2: Well, we released new music about two, three years ago. Yeah.
- 18:23Speaker 2: And so of those, there was an EP and, Of
- 18:29Speaker 2: that four-song, four-track EP, we do three of those songs,
- 18:34Speaker 2: three of those new songs in our set. And they are,
- 18:40Speaker 2: you know, amongst the strongest songs in the set. So
- 18:44Speaker 2: that's a good thing to happen when you've been able
- 18:47Speaker 2: to kind of get back together and create stuff. That
- 18:51Speaker 2: kind of re-energised the band and it gave us something
- 18:54Speaker 2: to talk about then. Yeah. I've got, you know, I've got...
- 18:58Speaker 2: Got the piano here, there.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Oh, lovely. I've got this behind me over there. It's
- 19:04Speaker 3: my wall of bases. So it's a nice little in-home studio.
- 19:07Speaker 2: On Sunday, we're working on something that I think could
- 19:11Speaker 2: be good for the band. Yeah, nice. It's hard to–
- 19:14Speaker 2: we carved out a bunch of time a few years
- 19:15Speaker 2: ago to make something happen. Yeah. And it'll just be
- 19:19Speaker 2: a matter of fighting the time to get a whole
- 19:22Speaker 2: lot of people together who have, you know, other lives. Yeah.
- 19:26Speaker 2: But yeah, there's still ideas being shared. And we refresh
- 19:29Speaker 2: the set as well with variations here and there without
- 19:34Speaker 2: bastardising too many songs. But yes, there's a degree of
- 19:39Speaker 2: creativity coming in each time we play.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Yeah, nice.
- 19:41Speaker 3: I know, I think it was Dave McCormack when I
- 19:44Speaker 3: was chatting with him not long back, he's to pick
- 19:46Speaker 3: out their set list and how they do it.
- 19:48Speaker 1: They just go to the most.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Popular songs and they pick them and then the next
- 19:51Speaker 3: night they might run them backwards and they just do
- 19:53Speaker 3: it like that, just mix it up and whatever comes out.
- 19:55Speaker 3: So that's a nice way to do it. Hit the
- 19:57Speaker 3: crowds happy, give them their faves. It's plenty of ways
- 20:00Speaker 3: to do it. And then Midnight Earl one time had
- 20:02Speaker 3: all their hits on a chocolate wheel and they spun it,
- 20:04Speaker 3: whatever it landed on, they just played. Yeah, that was
- 20:06Speaker 3: a great, great show. That was our 2000 watt RSL tour.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I think it was back in.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Oh shit. 98. I think it might've been.
- 20:15Speaker 2: We might've been on that.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 2: That was, um, we did a tour with them around that. Yeah.
- 20:23Speaker 1: It was, yeah.
- 20:23Speaker 3: It's just 20,000 watt RSL tour.
- 20:26Speaker 1: That was the one that that was.
- 20:27Speaker 3: And I think there was this great band from Tasmania
- 20:30Speaker 3: and I'm trying to forget that they're playing their dries,
- 20:33Speaker 3: the bones, the hat cowboy hats, and they were bloody great. And, um,
- 20:38Speaker 3: They're an obscure band, but it slipped me off the
- 20:40Speaker 3: top of my mind what their name was, but they
- 20:42Speaker 3: were sensational. Yes.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:45Speaker 3: The Good Old Days. That would have been great. You
- 20:47Speaker 3: guys are on the same bill as they were. You
- 20:51Speaker 3: and Peter, I swear, are ageless. You've got that fountain
- 20:56Speaker 3: of youth.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I want me some of that.
- 20:58Speaker 2: You got me up at the end of the last–
- 21:00Speaker 2: I kind of dropped a few hints. Yeah. They got
- 21:04Speaker 2: me up for the last four shows to sing Beds
- 21:06Speaker 2: Are Burning with them.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Oh, nice. That would have been great. That would have
- 21:09Speaker 1: been cool.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Definitely highlight.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Yeah. That's, that's a great job. Those people on that
- 21:14Speaker 2: stage playing. Yeah.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:18Speaker 1: No, definitely.
- 21:19Speaker 3: I think you would be our first call if I
- 21:22Speaker 3: ever needed a replacement or a doppelganger.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, we'll just slip you in. I'm
- 21:26Speaker 1: sure no one will even notice.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Give me some stilts.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Yeah. He is crazy tall.
- 21:32Speaker 3: I'm, Remember not so long back watching like the original videos.
- 21:36Speaker 3: I think it was of, I don't know if it
- 21:37Speaker 3: was beds are burning or it might've been power and passion.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I think it was power and passion. Like that video
- 21:42Speaker 1: clip is just off tap.
- 21:44Speaker 3: He looks like slender man. I'm like, no kidding. Like
- 21:46Speaker 3: he pours parts of it. And it's like.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Wild. It is our uni days for now.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Good stuff.
- 21:54Speaker 3: The good stuff indeed. Well, thank you so much for
- 21:56Speaker 3: coming and having a chat with us today at heavy.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Where I'll be seeing you guys Thursday night, which is
- 22:03Speaker 3: kind of cool because nothing much happens on a Thursday,
- 22:05Speaker 3: strangely enough, you know, good old cooling ghetto.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Thursday the 15th at Cooley Hotel.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I'll rattle off the other ones.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, do, because that was my next question.
- 22:16Speaker 3: What are the next dates?
- 22:18Speaker 2: Friday the 16th at Norton Music Factory, Caloundra.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Oh, okay, yep.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Saturday the 17th at Crowbar in Brisbane.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Nice, yep.
- 22:27Speaker 2: And the 18th, the Sunday... The Arts Factory, Byron Bay.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Oh, nice, nice. So Sunday back in Byron.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Yeah. And then we're playing Sydney at Felons.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Oh, nice.
- 22:40Speaker 2: There's a big venue down there now, which is going
- 22:41Speaker 2: really well. We're playing there. Yeah. We're playing there Friday
- 22:44Speaker 2: the 30th of October.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Oh, spooky time. Proud to be one.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Melbourne shows later on.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Yeah, excellent.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Offs Harbour at the end of the run in November.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Nice.
- 22:56Speaker 2: And also Pacific Palms where we finish up in Pacific Palms. Excellent. Nice.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Thanks for having us.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Yeah, you can catch all those deets on the link
- 23:05Speaker 3: that we'll chuck on at the end of this. And
- 23:07Speaker 3: I will be seeing you guys up and close in
- 23:10Speaker 3: the pit on Thursday.
