Transcript
- 0:01Kathie: Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the high pressure marketing tactics used by some in the coaching industry and online business world?
- 0:08Kathie: You are not alone.
- 0:12Kathie: In 2021, I invested in a well known course and what I discovered shocked me.
- 0:19Kathie: It became clear that I was not the ideal client for many gurus out there like Amy Porterfield.
- 0:28Kathie: And today I want to introduce you to something different, something rooted in integrity and honesty and the way I coach today.
- 0:35Kathie: You're listening to Kathie's Coaching Podcast.
- 0:37Kathie: I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 0:40Kathie: So today we're going to kind of switch gears a little bit and go into some information about coaching and entrepreneurship, because I have a lot of coaches and entrepreneurs who follow my content because I've connected with them over the years in different ways.
- 0:57Kathie: For example, I signed up for Digital Course Academy with Amy Porterfield in 2021.
- 1:03Kathie: And what I found through Amy was, Oh my gosh, she's so sweet.
- 1:08Kathie: She's so nice.
- 1:09Kathie: She's so kind.
- 1:11Kathie: But then when I got inside her community and I saw the way she marketed to her audience.
- 1:18Kathie: I was shocked.
- 1:21Kathie: I'm sorry, but I was absolutely shocked because what I see was Amy did not qualify her buyers.
- 1:29Kathie: She wants everyone to buy from her.
- 1:32Kathie: And the cost of her, her programs are high dollar, high dollar.
- 1:38Kathie: And to me, 2, 000 for a three month course, a less than three month course.
- 1:45Kathie: Is outrageous.
- 1:47Kathie: You better butter my toast and put avocado on top with bagel seasoning as well.
- 1:53Kathie: For me, if you're going to charge me 2, 000 for a course that.
- 2:01Kathie: Left me going, really?
- 2:03Kathie: I paid for this?
- 2:05Kathie: In my mind, I was thinking, oh, I'm going to get this course and Amy's going to take me to the next level.
- 2:12Kathie: And my clients are going to love this.
- 2:14Kathie: No, no, no.
- 2:16Kathie: No, no, no.
- 2:18Kathie: In retrospect, I see how she uses influence to market, to stay in the lifestyle that she's in.
- 2:28Kathie: That's where she needs to stay.
- 2:29Kathie: She has thousands of people sign up for her courses.
- 2:33Kathie: Thousands.
- 2:33Kathie: Do the math.
- 2:35Kathie: And she markets sometimes two times a year for this course.
- 2:39Kathie: And it's outrageous.
- 2:40Kathie: And so I've written several blog posts on...
- 2:44Kathie: Her marketing techniques, which I call forced marketing techniques, as opposed to power marketing techniques from the book Power vs.
- 2:53Kathie: Force by Dr.
- 2:54Kathie: David Hawkins.
- 2:56Kathie: But...
- 2:57Kathie: I created a infographic that I'm going to talk about today because I'm going to talk about the five things that go with ethical marketing that I don't see happening with Amy.
- 3:11Kathie: Step number one is transparency.
- 3:15Kathie: You know, I believe in...
- 3:16Kathie: Open and honest communication with my audience.
- 3:20Kathie: No hidden agendas, no smoke and no mirrors.
- 3:24Kathie: Because I believe in giving from a place of integrity and kindness and mutual benefit.
- 3:32Kathie: Mutual benefit means that you benefit and I benefit.
- 3:37Kathie: The forced marketing people out there, they benefit.
- 3:41Kathie: And a few benefit from them as well.
- 3:44Kathie: I'm not saying in any way that their stuff is wrong, that their courses are wrong.
- 3:50Kathie: I'm just saying it's not mutual benefit for me because it was too expensive, number one.
- 3:55Kathie: Number two, it didn't deliver on what I asked for.
- 3:59Kathie: So there was no transparency.
- 4:01Kathie: For example, here is a huge one that happened.
- 4:06Kathie: I get into the group.
- 4:08Kathie: And I see other people in week one of this massive course that takes 12 weeks and all of this overwhelm of information.
- 4:17Kathie: I am not kidding you.
- 4:18Kathie: Overwhelm.
- 4:20Kathie: She gives it to you in bite sized pieces.
- 4:22Kathie: Yes, absolutely.
- 4:23Kathie: That's great.
- 4:25Kathie: But at the same time, there were people in there in week one that were already on week four and going, Oh, I need this.
- 4:32Kathie: I need, I'm doing this.
- 4:33Kathie: I'm doing this.
- 4:34Kathie: I'm going, what the heck?
- 4:36Kathie: And it was when she launched again in November of 2021, that I realized she was inviting people who had already been in the course to take it again and not for free, not for free, my friend, it was not lifetime access.
- 4:53Kathie: It It was a price tag of like three hundred dollars.
- 4:59Kathie: 300.
- 5:00Kathie: These people were paying her 300 to go back through the course again and take the same material.
- 5:09Kathie: What the heck?
- 5:10Kathie: Where's the transparency there?
- 5:13Kathie: That is not lifetime access, in my opinion.
- 5:16Kathie: That's not lifetime access.
- 5:17Kathie: What that is, is that is her...
- 5:20Kathie: Lining her pocketbooks to live the lifestyle she has to live because she's built it this way, because she markets in forced marketing.
- 5:31Kathie: Step number two is Authenticity.
- 5:34Kathie: You know, your unique voice and your story matter.
- 5:39Kathie: And authenticity breeds trust and lasting connections.
- 5:44Kathie: Now what I see with Amy's marketing is...
- 5:48Kathie: She has authenticity in there.
- 5:51Kathie: She gives her pain points.
- 5:54Kathie: Ooh, that her audience can identify with.
- 5:57Kathie: I mean, she, she will take that knife into that pain point and twist it.
- 6:04Kathie: And honestly, that is not authentic.
- 6:09Kathie: That is almost cruel to the point where she understands influence and marketing to such an extent that she's pushing that authenticity button in the wrong direction.
- 6:25Kathie: And when you figure it out, you get.
- 6:28Kathie: towards people like that.
- 6:29Kathie: And that's where the regulation does not come into play because there's no regulation on that market.
- 6:35Kathie: That's where she can still keep doing this.
- 6:39Kathie: And step number three is respect.
- 6:42Kathie: We treat our audience with the respect they deserve.
- 6:46Kathie: We value their time, their opinions, and their boundaries.
- 6:51Kathie: That's important.
- 6:52Kathie: That is important, especially as a coach.
- 6:55Kathie: So let's talk about the boundaries that were crossed.
- 6:59Kathie: I wasn't going to sign up for Digital Course Academy.
- 7:02Kathie: There's just no way.
- 7:03Kathie: I saw the price tag and I'm like, yeah, no, I'm not going to do this.
- 7:06Kathie: I can just keep on doing what I'm doing.
- 7:10Kathie: And right at the end, her funnel showed that I did not buy.
- 7:16Kathie: What did that funnel do?
- 7:17Kathie: It so kindly told me, sweet Kathie she uses those words in there, in her email marketing all the time.
- 7:26Kathie: My sweet friend, which you don't know, I am not sweet, not to you, because of the way you've done me.
- 7:33Kathie: But you crossed my boundary when I already set up a boundary, I'm not going to spend this money.
- 7:39Kathie: But when she comes in with, Oh sweet Kathie, I know these pain points one, two, and three are really getting to you and you can't afford this.
- 7:47Kathie: So I'm going to give this to you for 197 a month.
- 7:52Kathie: Yeah.
- 7:54Kathie: Hook, line, and sinker.
- 7:57Kathie: Step number four, honest advertising.
- 8:00Kathie: You know, our marketing promises only what we can deliver.
- 8:05Kathie: No exaggerated claims or empty hype.
- 8:09Kathie: That's honest advertising.
- 8:12Kathie: What the heck?
- 8:14Kathie: This was so dishonest.
- 8:16Kathie: So she says you have lifetime access.
- 8:19Kathie: You get in the course and then she's selling even more on top of what you already paid.
- 8:24Kathie: You're paid 2, 000 up front.
- 8:27Kathie: Then she offers you the slides that you can do in your 45 minute webinar.
- 8:33Kathie: You have to pay an extra 300 for those slides.
- 8:37Kathie: On top of 2, 000, that's 2, 300 that you would have invested.
- 8:42Kathie: And then if you came back into the course again the second time, that's 2, 600 you're spending to learn this information.
- 8:53Kathie: And she promises that she can deliver.
- 8:56Kathie: How can you promise that you can deliver that to people when it's too much?
- 9:03Kathie: It's just too...
- 9:04Kathie: I'm not even talking financially.
- 9:06Kathie: It's too much overwhelm of information.
- 9:10Kathie: Yeah.
- 9:11Kathie: And step number five, responsibility.
- 9:13Kathie: And this one to me is the most important.
- 9:17Kathie: You know, I take my role seriously as a coach and I know that my actions impact people's lives.
- 9:27Kathie: I'm accountable for the information and products that I offer.
- 9:32Kathie: I'm accountable.
- 9:34Kathie: I'm responsible.
- 9:35Kathie: I take serious responsibility for my coaching clients.
- 9:40Kathie: In group coaching, it may not be as much responsibility as you do on one on one.
- 9:46Kathie: That's why one on one coaching is more expensive.
- 9:50Kathie: But more expensive to me is not, you know, I'm going to not charge 2, 000 for a three month course.
- 9:59Kathie: I'm just not going to do that unless that material is really going to impact their life.
- 10:06Kathie: And that material from Amy did not impact my life at all.
- 10:10Kathie: What did impact my life was I realized that I did not want a market like this.
- 10:16Kathie: And so I created this.
- 10:18Kathie: Infographic, and you can get it in the link in the show notes in the description below, but I created this infographic to remind me of my coaching, my ethics, which I'll go over them again.
- 10:32Kathie: They're transparency, authenticity, which is a buzzword really.
- 10:37Kathie: Authenticity is a buzzword, but I think if you're yourself.
- 10:41Kathie: And you breed trust and lasting connections and don't burn people like that.
- 10:47Kathie: I think that's more what I mean by authenticity and, and respect, respecting my clients, respecting their intelligence, respecting their opinions and listening to them and create honest advertising, honest marketing, honest across the board, not just a win for me, but a win.
- 11:10Kathie: For you and me, a mutual benefit.
- 11:14Kathie: And responsibility.
- 11:16Kathie: Take responsibility for yourself as a coach or as a business owner.
- 11:23Kathie: You know, if you're tired of the high pressure, get rich quick mentality in the coaching and online business world, if you crave ethical standards like this and genuine connections, then this guide is for you and I have a weekly newsletter that I send out to my fellow entrepreneurs.
