- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine hundred and
- 0:07Speaker 1: eighty three. Today, The Bible Study Podcast continues the study
- 0:11Speaker 1: of the Book of Exodus with chapter twenty four. Welcome
- 0:23Speaker 1: to the Bible Study Podcast. I'm your host Chris Kristensen.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Chapter twenty four the Covenant confirmed. But first a word
- 0:30Speaker 1: from this sponsor. Chapter twenty four starts like this. Then
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Lord said to Moses, come up to the Lord.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You and Aaron, Nadad, and Abihu and seventy of the
- 0:42Speaker 1: elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance.
- 0:45Speaker 1: But Moses alone is to approach the Lord, and the
- 0:47Speaker 1: others must not come near, and the people may not
- 0:50Speaker 1: come up with him. Then Moses went and told the
- 0:52Speaker 1: people all the Lord's words and laws. They responded with
- 0:56Speaker 1: one voice, everything the Lord has said, we will do,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and wrote down everything the Lord had said. He got
- 1:03Speaker 1: up early the next morning and built an altar at
- 1:05Speaker 1: the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone
- 1:08Speaker 1: pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent
- 1:12Speaker 1: young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed
- 1:16Speaker 1: young bulls as fellowship offerings to the Lord. Moses took
- 1:19Speaker 1: half the blood and put it in bulls, and the
- 1:22Speaker 1: other half he splashed against the altar. Then he took
- 1:25Speaker 1: the Book of the Covenant and started to read it
- 1:27Speaker 1: to the people. They responded, we will do everything the
- 1:30Speaker 1: Lord has said. We will obey. Moses then took the blood,
- 1:33Speaker 1: sprinkled it on the people, and said, this is the
- 1:36Speaker 1: blood of the Covenant that the Lord has made with you.
- 1:39Speaker 1: In accordance with all these words, Moses and Aaron, Nadab
- 1:44Speaker 1: and Abihu and the seventy elders of Israel went up
- 1:47Speaker 1: and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was
- 1:51Speaker 1: something like a pavement made of lapislazuli, as bright blue
- 1:55Speaker 1: as the sky. But God did not raise his hand
- 1:58Speaker 1: against these leaders of the Israelite. They saw God, and
- 2:01Speaker 1: they ate and drank. The Lord said to Moses, come
- 2:05Speaker 1: up with me on the mountain and stay here, and
- 2:07Speaker 1: I will give you the tablets of stone with the
- 2:09Speaker 1: law and commandments I have written for their instruction. Then
- 2:13Speaker 1: Moses set out with Joshua his aid, and Moses went
- 2:17Speaker 1: up on the mountain of God. He said to the elders,
- 2:19Speaker 1: wait here for us until we come back to you.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Aaron and her are with you, and anyone involved in
- 2:26Speaker 1: a dispute can go to them. When Moses went up
- 2:29Speaker 1: on the mountain, the cloud covered it, and the glory
- 2:31Speaker 1: of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days,
- 2:34Speaker 1: the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day,
- 2:37Speaker 1: the Lord called Moses from within the cloud. To the Israelites,
- 2:40Speaker 1: the glory of the Lord looked like consuming fire on
- 2:43Speaker 1: top of the mountain. Then Moses entered the cloud as
- 2:47Speaker 1: he went up on the mountain, and he stayed on
- 2:49Speaker 1: the mountain forty days and forty nights. So we've got
- 2:55Speaker 1: all of this that's been going on at Mount Sinai.
- 2:57Speaker 1: We've got the Ten Commandments, we've got some of the laws,
- 3:00Speaker 1: apparently the Book of the Law. Whether that's the whole
- 3:01Speaker 1: book of Leviticus, not sure, but they read that. They
- 3:06Speaker 1: all say this is great, we'll do all these things.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And then we're saying, okay, Moses and the elders, we're
- 3:12Speaker 1: going to go up. Oh my gosh, they get to
- 3:13Speaker 1: see God. This is amazing, and there's this blue like
- 3:17Speaker 1: Lapis Lazoli, this precious gem. And then okay, Moses, now
- 3:21Speaker 1: you get to come up separately, and you're going to
- 3:24Speaker 1: stay here for a while, and he's up there for
- 3:26Speaker 1: forty days and forty nights, and forty days and forty
- 3:28Speaker 1: nights is an interesting time period. I think this may
- 3:31Speaker 1: be the first one in the Bible, or was there
- 3:34Speaker 1: during Noah as well. But we're going to see the
- 3:37Speaker 1: forty years in the wilderness, Jesus in the desert for
- 3:40Speaker 1: forty days and forty nights, and this is one of
- 3:42Speaker 1: those things that forty days means a long time, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: he's up there a long time because he's going to
- 3:47Speaker 1: get some instructions. It's going to get some instructions about
- 3:50Speaker 1: building some things like the tabernacle, like the ark, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: we're going to continue on into chapter twenty five to
- 3:57Speaker 1: some of those instructions. The Lord said to Moses, tell
- 4:00Speaker 1: the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to
- 4:02Speaker 1: receive the offering for me from everyone whose hearts prompt
- 4:06Speaker 1: them to give. These are the offerings you would received
- 4:08Speaker 1: from them. Gold, silver and bronze, blue, purple and scarlet,
- 4:12Speaker 1: yarn and fine linen, goat hair, ramskins dyed red, and
- 4:17Speaker 1: another type of durable leather, acacia wood, olive oil for
- 4:21Speaker 1: the light, spices for the anointing, oil, and for the
- 4:25Speaker 1: fragrant incense and onyx stones and other gems to be
- 4:28Speaker 1: mounted on the ephad and breastplate. Then have them make
- 4:32Speaker 1: a sanctuary for me and I will dwell among them.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Make this tabernacle and all its furnishing is exactly like
- 4:38Speaker 1: the pattern I will show you. So the tabernacle is
- 4:41Speaker 1: going to be the temporary, movable temple of God, that
- 4:47Speaker 1: is where the presence of God will be obvious among
- 4:50Speaker 1: the people of God. We're going to get some instructions
- 4:53Speaker 1: about it later on. Collect from among the people. You're
- 4:57Speaker 1: not going to go to the store and buy stuff, right,
- 4:59Speaker 1: it's this is the st that people have taken with
- 5:01Speaker 1: them that remember when they were leaving Egypt, the Egyptians
- 5:05Speaker 1: gave them a bunch of stuff to just take this
- 5:07Speaker 1: and go. And so they're going to collect some of
- 5:09Speaker 1: those things that are going to be used for the
- 5:11Speaker 1: tabernacle for the other things they are going to be creating.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Here the arc, have them make an arc of acacia
- 5:17Speaker 1: wood two and a half cubits long, a cubit and
- 5:20Speaker 1: a half wide, and a cubit and a half high.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Overlay it with pure gold both inside and out, and
- 5:26Speaker 1: make a gold molding around it. Cast four gold rings
- 5:30Speaker 1: for it and fasten them to its four feet, with
- 5:34Speaker 1: two rings on one side and two rings on the other.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Then make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of
- 5:43Speaker 1: the ark to carry it. The poles are to remain
- 5:46Speaker 1: in the rings of this arc. They are not to
- 5:48Speaker 1: be removed. Then put in the ark the tablets of
- 5:51Speaker 1: the Covenant Law which I will give you. Make an
- 5:54Speaker 1: atonement cover of pure gold two and a half cubits
- 5:57Speaker 1: long and a cubit and a half wide. Make two
- 6:00Speaker 1: cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Make one cherub at one end and the second cherub
- 6:07Speaker 1: on the other. Make the cherubim of one piece with
- 6:11Speaker 1: the cover at the two ends. The cherubim are to
- 6:14Speaker 1: have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them.
- 6:18Speaker 1: The cherabim aar to face each other looking toward the cover.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Place the cover on top of the ark, and put
- 6:24Speaker 1: in the ark the tablets of the Covenant Law that
- 6:26Speaker 1: I will give you. There above the cover. Between the
- 6:29Speaker 1: two cherubim that are over the ark of the Covenant Law.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I will meet with you and give you all my
- 6:35Speaker 1: commands for the Israelites. So this is sort of the
- 6:40Speaker 1: portable presence of God. This arc here. We're going to
- 6:44Speaker 1: put the Ten Commandments in there. We're going to put
- 6:46Speaker 1: some other things in there later to remember this journey.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But that's what's going to go in here now. And
- 6:53Speaker 1: a cubit is about a foot and a half. It's
- 6:56Speaker 1: the distance from your tip of your fingers to your elbow.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And what it's standardized on at the time, I do
- 7:02Speaker 1: not know. But if you've seen the movie The Raiders
- 7:05Speaker 1: of the Lost Dark, you've seen a model of what
- 7:08Speaker 1: somebody thought that the arc of the Covenant would look like.
- 7:11Speaker 1: With these two angels, the two cherubim at the top
- 7:15Speaker 1: out of hammered gold the table. Make a table of
- 7:18Speaker 1: acacia wood two cubits long, a cubit wide and a
- 7:21Speaker 1: cubit and a half high. Overlay it with pure gold
- 7:23Speaker 1: and make a gold molding around it. Also make a
- 7:26Speaker 1: rim a handbreadth wide and put a gold molding on
- 7:30Speaker 1: the rim. Make four gold rings for the table and
- 7:33Speaker 1: fasten them to the four corners where the four legs are.
- 7:36Speaker 1: The rings are to be close to the rim, to
- 7:39Speaker 1: hold the poles used to carry the table. Make the
- 7:42Speaker 1: poles of acasha wood, overlay them with gold, and carry
- 7:45Speaker 1: the table with them, and make its plates and dishes
- 7:48Speaker 1: of pure gold, as well as its pitchers and bowls
- 7:51Speaker 1: for the pouring out of offerings. Put the bread of
- 7:54Speaker 1: the presence on this table to be before me at
- 7:57Speaker 1: all times. So this is similar to what you'd find
- 8:01Speaker 1: and altar in a church. This is the table. It's
- 8:03Speaker 1: going to have the offering bread on it. Although the
- 8:06Speaker 1: offering bread isn't going to be the same as we
- 8:09Speaker 1: think of if you go to a church these days,
- 8:12Speaker 1: but it's one of the types of offering that you
- 8:14Speaker 1: would give. Is this grain offering made into bread that's
- 8:18Speaker 1: going to sit on the table. And then the lampstand.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Make a lampstand of pure gold, hammer out its base
- 8:23Speaker 1: and shaft, and make its flower like cups, buds and
- 8:27Speaker 1: blossoms of one piece with them. Six branches are to
- 8:30Speaker 1: extend from the side of the lampstand, three on one
- 8:33Speaker 1: side and three on the other. Three cups shaped like
- 8:36Speaker 1: almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on
- 8:39Speaker 1: one branch, three on the next, and the same for
- 8:42Speaker 1: all six branches extending from the lampstand, and all the
- 8:46Speaker 1: lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond
- 8:48Speaker 1: flowers with buds and blossoms. One bud shall be under
- 8:52Speaker 1: the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a
- 8:55Speaker 1: second bud under the second pair, and a third bud
- 8:58Speaker 1: under the third pair. Six branches in all the buds
- 9:01Speaker 1: and branches shall be of one piece. With the lampstand
- 9:05Speaker 1: hammered out of pure gold. Then make it seven lamps
- 9:08Speaker 1: and set them up so that they light the space
- 9:10Speaker 1: in front of it. It's wick. Trimmers and trays are
- 9:14Speaker 1: to be of pure gold. A talent of pure gold
- 9:17Speaker 1: is to be used for the lampstand and all these accessories.
- 9:20Speaker 1: See that you make them according to the pattern shown
- 9:22Speaker 1: you on the mountain. So apparently Moses is getting some
- 9:27Speaker 1: other instructions besides just this verbal instructions. At least that's
- 9:32Speaker 1: what I'm interpreting by make them according to the pattern
- 9:35Speaker 1: shown you on the mountain, that I'm going to show
- 9:37Speaker 1: you what I wanted to look like. And God is
- 9:40Speaker 1: sketching out some lampstands that are going to look like
- 9:42Speaker 1: flowers and buds and blossoms and I I haven't really
- 9:45Speaker 1: seen pictures of the lamp stand that have been recreated.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I think of a manora, but this is obviously much
- 9:52Speaker 1: more fancy than that. It's got seven lamps and these
- 9:55Speaker 1: would be oil lamps, but it's very elaborate and everything's
- 9:58Speaker 1: made out of gold. So moses up on the mountain.
- 10:01Speaker 1: We're going to leave them up there getting instructions for
- 10:04Speaker 1: making stuff like this, and we're going to continue that
- 10:07Speaker 1: next week. But with that, we're going to end this
- 10:09Speaker 1: episode at the Bible Study Podcast. If you have any questions,
