- 0:17I am down and willing,
- 0:19so I will find a way.
- 0:20It took a minute,
- 0:21now it didn't have to ride away.
- 0:23When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:24you decide to stay.
- 0:25That's how it win us, man.
- 0:26Stick a fork in the head of Ramadan.
- 0:35What is going on, everybody?
- 0:36Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast,
- 0:39where we are featuring the
- 0:40athletes of the 2024
- 0:42CrossFit Games Semifinals.
- 0:44So excited to talk to my next guest,
- 0:46Ellie Hiller.
- 0:47Ellie, how you doing?
- 0:49I'm pumped to be here.
- 0:50It was fun two years ago
- 0:51when I got to do it, so.
- 0:52Yeah, yeah.
- 0:54So I guess that's a great
- 0:56question right off the bat is,
- 0:57what happened in 23?
- 0:59Yeah, good question.
- 1:01Um, what happened in 23?
- 1:03It really the the strength
- 1:05of it is what kept me out.
- 1:07I was really happy with all
- 1:08my scores and the other
- 1:09other workouts except for
- 1:11for one that I should have repeated.
- 1:13But yeah,
- 1:14I just had to get a lot stronger.
- 1:15That's what I've been
- 1:16working on the past seven years.
- 1:18So glad I finally made it
- 1:20only seven years.
- 1:21Only seven.
- 1:22Well, yeah, only seven.
- 1:25Yeah.
- 1:26Yeah.
- 1:26It's been a long journey,
- 1:27but it makes it more rewarding though.
- 1:28When I do make it because I
- 1:30know like I have to have
- 1:31been hammering that about
- 1:33as hard as I could.
- 1:33Cause you can only get so strong,
- 1:35honestly.
- 1:35Like I feel like with
- 1:37building an aerobic base,
- 1:39not to say it's easier to
- 1:41insult anyone that that's
- 1:42their weakness because I don't,
- 1:43nothing's easy in CrossFit,
- 1:45but it just takes a long time, man,
- 1:47to get stronger.
- 1:47It really does.
- 1:49Yeah,
- 1:49so what's funny is all of my co-hosts
- 1:53are athletes like you.
- 1:56They're trying to build the
- 1:57strength portion of their repertoire.
- 2:01Jamie on my Sunday night
- 2:02show now and Carolyn
- 2:04Prevost are both great athletes,
- 2:06and they're trying to build
- 2:07that strength up,
- 2:11and that's the only thing
- 2:12holding them back from great success.
- 2:14Yeah.
- 2:15Yeah, well, Carolyn,
- 2:16I know her from competing
- 2:18against her at Atlas Games
- 2:19and then way back in the
- 2:20day at Granite Games when I
- 2:21was a little baby, and she's strong.
- 2:23So if she's having to get stronger, yeah,
- 2:26that says a lot.
- 2:27She's already a really strong girl.
- 2:29Yeah,
- 2:29what amazes me about her is just her
- 2:31athleticism because of all
- 2:32the sports she played
- 2:34growing up and into the
- 2:36college Division I level and all of that.
- 2:39But, yeah,
- 2:40it's just fun talking to her
- 2:41because she's worked a lot
- 2:43on strength over the years.
- 2:45Oh, yeah.
- 2:46Yeah.
- 2:46She's so impressive.
- 2:48I remember, shout out to her, like I said,
- 2:50back at Granite Games when I was like 16.
- 2:51I could barely deadlift.
- 2:54We had like a deadlift workout.
- 2:55I was like 285.
- 2:56I could barely lift it.
- 2:58I had no idea who she was.
- 2:59And I was the last on the floor.
- 3:00And she was just over there
- 3:02like giving me tips,
- 3:04really like rooting for me.
- 3:05I saw the teacher come out in her.
- 3:06And from that moment on,
- 3:07I've been a fan of hers
- 3:09forever just because I
- 3:10remember how she treated me.
- 3:11And it really meant a lot.
- 3:12Yeah.
- 3:14So, and when I say strength with Carolyn,
- 3:16it's shoulder to overhead.
- 3:17Yeah.
- 3:19Like she's one of the best
- 3:20deadlifters in the world.
- 3:21Oh yeah.
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:23Um, but she crushed it.
- 3:26Yeah.
- 3:26Um, but speaking of like the,
- 3:29the teacher coming out in her,
- 3:30one of the things she takes
- 3:31a lot of pride in is that
- 3:33she's a full-time employee, um,
- 3:36working full-time hours and
- 3:37still trying to do this
- 3:39crazy thing called CrossFit
- 3:41at a pro level.
- 3:42Yeah.
- 3:43you too work a full-time job
- 3:45and squeeze all these training hours,
- 3:48not only into training for CrossFit,
- 3:50but running your own business as well.
- 3:52Yeah.
- 3:53Yeah.
- 3:54I am a nurse by trade.
- 3:56So that is my job that I
- 3:59graduated with a degree for.
- 4:03And I also own my own business.
- 4:05So I find a lot of joy in
- 4:08having a career and
- 4:11um,
- 4:11things outside of CrossFit to kind of
- 4:14help me just stay a little,
- 4:15stay balanced.
- 4:16Um, by no means is it easy.
- 4:17There are days where I'm like, man,
- 4:18it would be nice to be good
- 4:20enough to be a full-time athlete.
- 4:21But, um, I, I really do.
- 4:24I,
- 4:24I think I will say this forever and
- 4:26never go back on it.
- 4:27Um,
- 4:27regardless of how far I may get in the
- 4:29sport, I really,
- 4:30really love having a career.
- 4:32So,
- 4:33and do you still work as a nurse today?
- 4:35I do.
- 4:36I started out in emergency
- 4:37nursing and that became a
- 4:39little bit too difficult to
- 4:40juggle with training just
- 4:42with 12 hour shifts and everything.
- 4:44And you end up staying later
- 4:45than 12 hours in emergency medicine.
- 4:47So I now work part time in
- 4:50pediatric anesthesia.
- 4:51So it's outpatient and the
- 4:53hours start really early.
- 4:55So it's like five or six a.m.,
- 4:57but then we get done at
- 4:59like one or two typically.
- 5:01So it's really nice for training.
- 5:03Yeah,
- 5:04it seems like I've had a couple
- 5:06surgeries this year and
- 5:08they're all super early in the morning.
- 5:10Like doctors want to get in, get out.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:13Well, and the other thing too is like,
- 5:14you know, you have to fast.
- 5:15So we want to make it a
- 5:17little bit easier on the patient,
- 5:18especially if it's a little kid,
- 5:20easier on the parents so that, you know,
- 5:22they can just wake up,
- 5:23have the surgery and not
- 5:23have to fast all day.
- 5:25Yeah, that makes perfect sense.
- 5:26Yeah.
- 5:27You own a nutrition company named Vulcan.
- 5:31Why the name Vulcan?
- 5:33Yeah, so I'm in Birmingham, Alabama.
- 5:36Are you coming to the to the games,
- 5:38the Masters games, by the way?
- 5:39Of course I am.
- 5:40OK, awesome.
- 5:41I'll see you there.
- 5:43So live in Birmingham and we have a.
- 5:46I don't even know what you call it,
- 5:47but it's like a statue kind
- 5:49of overlooking the city.
- 5:50And it's a really popular tourist spot,
- 5:54but it's called the Vulcan statue.
- 5:56And so if you've ever been to Birmingham,
- 5:58you've probably seen
- 5:59pictures of it all over downtown,
- 6:01like murals and stuff.
- 6:02But it basically has to do
- 6:03with Birmingham being like the iron city,
- 6:05which then became like the magic city.
- 6:07And Vulcan has something to
- 6:10do with Greek mythology, the god of like
- 6:13iron which I'm not into that
- 6:14uh but I just thought it
- 6:15was cool to call it vulcan
- 6:17and make it a kind of a
- 6:19shout out to to birmingham
- 6:20so so yeah I've never I've
- 6:22never stopped in birmingham
- 6:24I've driven through yeah on
- 6:26the way to florida better
- 6:29destination and um but I i
- 6:35don't know I have so many
- 6:36questions right now um and
- 6:38I don't know which way to go
- 6:40anyway we're not redneck if
- 6:42that's where you're if
- 6:44that's where your head is
- 6:44going people think we're
- 6:45really redneck but well I i
- 6:49went through your instagram
- 6:50you're a ttt athlete are
- 6:52you still with them I am I
- 6:53am and you're wearing north
- 6:56carolina blue and north
- 6:58carolina shirts but you
- 7:00live in birmingham did you
- 7:02go to college in north carolina
- 7:04No,
- 7:05I actually went to college at Samford
- 7:06university here in Birmingham.
- 7:08Everybody off.
- 7:11Yeah.
- 7:11So I went to a basketball
- 7:13camp in North Carolina at UNC,
- 7:17became a huge fan through
- 7:19the basketball program.
- 7:20But to be perfectly honest with you,
- 7:22I have a problem where I
- 7:24just buy shirts that I like
- 7:26the colors of that team.
- 7:28And it's honestly like a problem.
- 7:30I wear Indiana shirts.
- 7:32I have no affiliation to Indiana,
- 7:34like same thing with kind
- 7:35of UNC other than that camp.
- 7:36So people make fun of me for it.
- 7:38It's kind of a problem.
- 7:41Yeah,
- 7:41the only pair of Air Jordans I ever
- 7:43owned were North Carolina version.
- 7:45They're so pretty.
- 7:46Their colors are the best, hands down.
- 7:48If you look, like,
- 7:49our blue is the Carolina blue.
- 7:52Yes, I noticed that.
- 7:53I love it.
- 7:55That's my business colors as well.
- 7:57Yeah, I did notice that.
- 8:01Yeah.
- 8:01Corey Leonard's in the chat
- 8:03saying Ellie is incredibly friendly,
- 8:05friendly and cheerful.
- 8:06We did handstand pushups
- 8:07next to each other at the
- 8:08Southland camp in February.
- 8:11I had no idea who she was
- 8:13until I saw the video Hiller made.
- 8:15Just knew she was super friendly.
- 8:18Hey, Corey, he's he's in all the chats.
- 8:20I love it.
- 8:20Thanks for the shout outs.
- 8:22Yeah, he's I supposedly he has a job.
- 8:26I don't know what it is.
- 8:29I've gotten to know corey he
- 8:31actually was my roommate at
- 8:32masters fitness collective
- 8:34no way um we hung out
- 8:35together that was the first
- 8:36time we ever met in person
- 8:38and uh got to know him he
- 8:40killed it up there he's a
- 8:41fit guy he's really fit and
- 8:45he says I promise you I do
- 8:47actually work we believe
- 8:49you corey I'm you make us
- 8:51look good in the chat thank you so
- 8:57So I'm super excited because I'm actually,
- 9:00I'm pretty sure,
- 9:01pretty sure I'm going to be
- 9:02in Knoxville as well.
- 9:03Nice.
- 9:04So I'll be covering the event there.
- 9:08You have a year where you don't make it.
- 9:11You're back at it again.
- 9:13Does it mean more to you
- 9:14this time around or the
- 9:16first time at Atlas Games?
- 9:18That's a good question.
- 9:20Yeah.
- 9:21I think it's in different ways.
- 9:25So in Atlas Games, I was a backfill.
- 9:28I got the call about, honestly,
- 9:30a month after everyone else
- 9:32found out they had made it.
- 9:33And so it was kind of like, oh, my gosh,
- 9:36this is awesome.
- 9:37I had already come to terms
- 9:38with not making it.
- 9:39So it was just a surprise.
- 9:40But I...
- 9:43This year, making it, I knew I really,
- 9:45really earned it.
- 9:46And so that, I would have to say,
- 9:48is a little bit sweeter.
- 9:49Not that I didn't.
- 9:50I worked my butt off the
- 9:51first time I qualified.
- 9:53But I have done nothing but
- 9:57try as hard as I possibly
- 9:59can to fill my holes.
- 10:01And I really couldn't
- 10:02confidently say I left
- 10:03nothing on the table this past year.
- 10:06My execution in
- 10:07quarterfinals was about as
- 10:09perfect as it could have been.
- 10:10And I'm not one to really
- 10:11say things like that.
- 10:13Um,
- 10:14so really I would have to say this year
- 10:16means more, um, just because, you know,
- 10:18I got 28 in quarterfinals
- 10:19and it wasn't even really
- 10:21close to a backfill, which I kind of,
- 10:23to be honest with you,
- 10:24I went into the
- 10:24quarterfinals this year
- 10:26thinking I was going to be
- 10:27a backfill again,
- 10:28which I know is not the best mindset, but,
- 10:31um, it really meant a lot when I was like,
- 10:32oh, I comfortably made it.
- 10:34That's awesome.
- 10:34So.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:35And in the East,
- 10:36which is probably the
- 10:38hardest and a reduced field
- 10:40this year where they only
- 10:42took 40 instead of 60.
- 10:44Yeah.
- 10:45So super impressive.
- 10:48I was really thankful.
- 10:49Yeah.
- 10:49I have a really great
- 10:50support system down here and yeah,
- 10:51just really thankful to God
- 10:52for a healthy year and that
- 10:54I'm still loving it, enjoying it.
- 10:56So hopefully I can go and do
- 10:57the same at semifinals.
- 10:59So for years you were on a team.
- 11:03Um, you're on a team with your husband.
- 11:05Is that correct?
- 11:06Yes.
- 11:07Yes.
- 11:07One year we went to the Mac.
- 11:09It was in 2021.
- 11:11So what,
- 11:12what made you change your mind two
- 11:14years ago to all of a
- 11:16sudden go individual?
- 11:18That has always been the goal individual.
- 11:20Um,
- 11:21my teammates that I have been on teams
- 11:23with, uh,
- 11:24have always been really gracious
- 11:25to allow me to give individual a shot.
- 11:28And then if I don't make it, you know,
- 11:29I go team.
- 11:31Um, it's always been the plan B, but.
- 11:34that's really not the best
- 11:36approach like for anyone on a team,
- 11:37right?
- 11:37Like you want someone to be pretty,
- 11:39pretty committed from the
- 11:40start in my opinion.
- 11:41Um,
- 11:41so I've been blessed with teammates
- 11:42that have allowed me to do that.
- 11:44When I don't make it,
- 11:45I have that as a fallback plan.
- 11:47Um, but it has always been individual.
- 11:49Um, and just with my skillset,
- 11:51I'm not a great team athlete.
- 11:53Um,
- 11:54because I would argue that
- 11:55good team athletes are
- 11:56people who are powerful and
- 11:58strong and can work for
- 11:59short bursts of time with
- 12:01the rare exception of, you know,
- 12:02running events at the games
- 12:03and stuff like that.
- 12:04But typically a team athlete,
- 12:05you need to be pretty
- 12:06strong and powerful.
- 12:06And so that's the opposite of me.
- 12:08And so I've always just been
- 12:10more inclined to do individual anyway.
- 12:12And that's kind of how I
- 12:13grew up playing sports.
- 12:15So it kind of just fits better.
- 12:18What was it like being on a
- 12:19team with your husband?
- 12:21um uh where do I start my
- 12:24husband and I we get along
- 12:26so well so it's not like um
- 12:29it's just funny because
- 12:31there were so many times
- 12:33where I like I'm the
- 12:34problem every time I'll be
- 12:35the first to say like if we
- 12:39got into any spat in
- 12:40training it was always me like
- 12:43And I'm being dead serious.
- 12:46It was just like,
- 12:46it would be a strength for me.
- 12:48We'd be doing handstand pushes,
- 12:49for example.
- 12:49That's a strength for me.
- 12:50And if I'm paired with him, you know,
- 12:52that's not his strength.
- 12:53That's his weakness.
- 12:54And
- 12:55I've had to go back and apologize for this,
- 12:57but I'm like expecting him
- 12:58to be at my level for my
- 13:00best movement and his worst movement.
- 13:02And so then I'll kind of like start,
- 13:03I'll start counting down.
- 13:04Right.
- 13:05Like I'll do the like three, two, one,
- 13:06like we're going to get
- 13:07back on the wall and he's
- 13:09totally not ready.
- 13:10And so then we're just like
- 13:11nipping at each other.
- 13:12And I'm like, this is completely my fault.
- 13:13This is not how you work on a team.
- 13:15So we would have our,
- 13:17our fair share of moments like that.
- 13:19But overall it was an amazing experience.
- 13:21It's just,
- 13:23it was interesting just because
- 13:24you have to kind of,
- 13:25learn to compartmentalize,
- 13:27which is not really how
- 13:28I've ever gone about
- 13:30anything in our relationship.
- 13:31But it's kind of like,
- 13:32there's a time where he
- 13:33just needs to be my
- 13:33teammate and we need to leave the,
- 13:36we just need to act like teammates,
- 13:38you know, not a married couple.
- 13:39So it was interesting.
- 13:40It was interesting.
- 13:41Yeah,
- 13:42my wife and I can't even do a partner
- 13:44workout and survive.
- 13:47I am ultra competitive.
- 13:50She could care less if we win.
- 13:51The minute it starts, it goes south.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:57Um, so we try to avoid that at all costs,
- 14:01but it's funny.
- 14:02I talked to, um,
- 14:03Emily Rolfe and her husband, Kyle.
- 14:05Yeah.
- 14:06And Kyle tells,
- 14:07told me a story where they
- 14:09have to compartmentalize
- 14:10cause he's her coach.
- 14:12And like,
- 14:13he had to be really hard on her
- 14:14at right before she went
- 14:16out on the floor for something.
- 14:18And then he said, while the event started,
- 14:20I'm writing the apology via text, um,
- 14:24oh my gosh I think that
- 14:27actually I am so impressed
- 14:29by people that can do the
- 14:32coaching husband and wife
- 14:33thing tia and shane emily
- 14:35and her husband um there's
- 14:37a couple down here in
- 14:38birmingham they did it for
- 14:39a long time and I'm just
- 14:40like I i don't know how
- 14:43people do that it takes a
- 14:44lot of emotional um
- 14:47awareness and just a really
- 14:48high emotional IQ,
- 14:49I think to be able to say, all right,
- 14:50this is my coach speaking,
- 14:51not my husband.
- 14:53And it's not personal.
- 14:54He wants what's best for me, man.
- 14:56That is, that is tough.
- 14:57I respect people that can do that.
- 14:59Yeah.
- 14:59My gym owners are married.
- 15:00It's,
- 15:01and it's Christy Aramo O'Connell and
- 15:04their, their coach athlete, husband, wife,
- 15:07and they always seem to be getting along.
- 15:09I don't know.
- 15:11how they do it.
- 15:12But anyway, I also look through your,
- 15:17the Vulcan, um,
- 15:19IG and I see your mom on there a bunch.
- 15:22Yeah.
- 15:23So do you work with her with that company?
- 15:25Uh,
- 15:27Yeah, that's funny.
- 15:28She not it.
- 15:30I don't work with her at all.
- 15:31It's really just a product
- 15:32of she found that her I
- 15:35don't even want to say fan base.
- 15:36She has a huge following.
- 15:37She's like 100,000 something followers.
- 15:40Her following really was
- 15:42interested in nutrition.
- 15:43She found that some of the
- 15:44content which she would
- 15:45have me on her podcast.
- 15:46Or even just have me like
- 15:48put out something on a reel.
- 15:50They really responded well to it.
- 15:52And I think I took for
- 15:54granted the fact that just
- 15:55the spheres I'm in,
- 15:56in health care and then in CrossFit,
- 15:59people hear about nutrition, you know,
- 16:01kind of all the time.
- 16:01It's just common language.
- 16:03But then there's people who don't.
- 16:06hear proteins important
- 16:08often or the importance of
- 16:09strength training and so I
- 16:11found that her following
- 16:11was really receptive to
- 16:13that and they wanted to
- 16:13learn a lot so we just have
- 16:14started to produce more
- 16:16content together and it's
- 16:17been super rewarding and
- 16:19it's opened my eyes to not
- 16:20just take for granted just
- 16:22because I'm in the fitness
- 16:23world everyone knows that
- 16:24protein's important or kind
- 16:26of the simple things that
- 16:27we would say you know with nutrition.
- 16:29And, and please help me figure this out,
- 16:33but midlife something is
- 16:36what it's called.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:38So I created a course called
- 16:39Midlife Savvy and it's an,
- 16:41it's almost like a master,
- 16:42it's a masterclass essentially.
- 16:43If you've kind of seen the
- 16:44ad ads for any of those
- 16:46masterclasses from cooking or whatever,
- 16:49making sourdough bread.
- 16:50And it's,
- 16:51it's a course targeted to the
- 16:53midlife woman.
- 16:54So anyone who is anywhere,
- 16:57I would say midlife could
- 16:59technically even be like mid thirties,
- 17:00even though you're still super young.
- 17:03But then all the way up until like,
- 17:04you know, the seventies,
- 17:05just because there are specific,
- 17:08things that I think that
- 17:10demographic has been told
- 17:12from a nutrition and a
- 17:12lifestyle standpoint that
- 17:13are really just bad.
- 17:14Like don't lift weights,
- 17:17stay away from fat.
- 17:19Carbs are going to make you fat.
- 17:20You know, if you eat too much protein,
- 17:21you'll get bulky.
- 17:22If you strength train, you'll get bulky.
- 17:24So our goal is to really
- 17:25kind of like reverse those
- 17:26myths and just help women feel better,
- 17:30get help,
- 17:30become healthier and really know
- 17:32that the best years are not behind them.
- 17:34Just because you're 50,
- 17:35you can be the healthiest
- 17:36you've ever been at 50.
- 17:38Yeah,
- 17:39I watched the one with the sourdough
- 17:40bread.
- 17:41Yeah.
- 17:42And your mom was like the excellent,
- 17:44the perfect Vanna White
- 17:46showing off the sourdough.
- 17:48Yeah.
- 17:48As you were explaining that, you know,
- 17:50bread doesn't make you fat and that,
- 17:53you know,
- 17:53this only has a couple ingredients.
- 17:55And if you can just kind of
- 17:56keep that like that, everything's cool.
- 17:59Yeah.
- 17:59I mean,
- 18:01from what I've heard about that
- 18:02generation,
- 18:03they were all told like bread.
- 18:05bread is terrible.
- 18:05Stay away from bread.
- 18:06It's going to make you fat.
- 18:08You know, any type of carbs,
- 18:09stay away from all carbs.
- 18:10And it's like, no, like you can eat bread.
- 18:13It's just, if you eat too many calories,
- 18:15you'll, you'll gain weight.
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:16But absolutely you can
- 18:17incorporate it into a healthy diet.
- 18:19So I am part of that generation.
- 18:21And so we were told everything we're told,
- 18:24you know, fat free diets, the way to go,
- 18:27then no carbs.
- 18:28Then like,
- 18:29it just kept cycling a different
- 18:31trend and none of them worked.
- 18:34yeah none of them worked it
- 18:36wasn't until like it became
- 18:39more balanced in my life
- 18:40that things worked for me
- 18:41so yep yeah you hear all
- 18:43the time the best plan is
- 18:45one that you can follow and
- 18:46I'm just I'm such a big
- 18:48proponent of that obviously
- 18:50there's better plans in my
- 18:51opinion than others even if
- 18:53you can follow both of them
- 18:54but sustainability is is
- 18:56the key or else we're not
- 18:57really helping people you
- 18:58know if people lose 30
- 19:00pounds and they're back
- 19:02three months later, even six months later,
- 19:04it's like, did you really help them?
- 19:06No, honestly,
- 19:07I would say you might've
- 19:08actually hurt them.
- 19:10Cause then you get in this
- 19:11rat race of like diet culture,
- 19:14diet industry of like,
- 19:15it's going to be this ebb
- 19:16and flow my whole life.
- 19:17And I don't think that's,
- 19:18I don't think that's
- 19:19helping people regardless
- 19:20of how much weight you lose three months.
- 19:23I love how you talk about your pillars.
- 19:25And the first pillar is that
- 19:27you shouldn't need us forever.
- 19:28Yeah.
- 19:30And that's so cool.
- 19:33I tell my coaches,
- 19:34I have three coaches on staff,
- 19:37not including myself.
- 19:38And I tell them, like,
- 19:38you're going to have to fire clients,
- 19:40you know, and that sounds like a terrible,
- 19:42terrible marketing strategy.
- 19:44But if they obviously we
- 19:46have a conversation, we're not just like,
- 19:47bye.
- 19:48But if they are doing this
- 19:50well on their own.
- 19:52that's the goal.
- 19:53Like fly out of the nest.
- 19:54We want you to do it on your own.
- 19:56If we're keeping you forever,
- 19:57then we're a crutch.
- 19:59And so, yeah.
- 19:59So I told my coaches, like,
- 20:01if you feel like they're
- 20:01good and you need to fire them,
- 20:04set them loose and give
- 20:05them the confidence to do
- 20:06it on their own.
- 20:08Did I,
- 20:08did I see in your Instagram that you
- 20:10are a former swimmer?
- 20:12Yeah, actually I am in high school.
- 20:15I swam, but I could never do it year,
- 20:17which I know you're a
- 20:18swimmer or you were a swimmer.
- 20:19Um, but I could never do it.
- 20:21I listened to your podcast.
- 20:24Oh, wow.
- 20:25Yeah.
- 20:26I think I've listened to a lot of yours.
- 20:27Um, and I really enjoy them, but yeah, no,
- 20:29I, uh,
- 20:30I never could swim year round
- 20:32because of basketball.
- 20:33Um, so I interfered,
- 20:34but I did summer swim and, um,
- 20:36I got a D three like D
- 20:39three schools were asking me to swim,
- 20:40but obviously you don't get
- 20:41scholarship money.
- 20:42So,
- 20:43Yeah.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:44I didn't swim a year round either.
- 20:46I,
- 20:46it just was with the sport I was best at,
- 20:48but I actually was a four sport athlete.
- 20:50Oh, wow.
- 20:51So I played football, swam, uh,
- 20:54did track and then baseball.
- 20:55Oh, dang.
- 20:56And those all are kind of
- 20:58conflicting seasons, I guess.
- 20:59You had to have run together
- 21:01with some of them.
- 21:03Like baseball was over and
- 21:05then I had like a month
- 21:06break before football season started.
- 21:09Yeah.
- 21:09Football ran over swimming.
- 21:11So as soon as it was done,
- 21:12I had to like jump in the
- 21:13pool and suffer for two
- 21:15weeks just to get into shape.
- 21:17Yeah.
- 21:18They need two different body types too,
- 21:20right?
- 21:21So like I had to,
- 21:22I would play football at
- 21:23over 200 pounds and I'd swim at 175.
- 21:26Oh my gosh.
- 21:27Yeah.
- 21:28That's insane.
- 21:30I can't imagine that.
- 21:32And it probably wasn't
- 21:33healthy and it probably
- 21:34taught me bad habits back then.
- 21:36I just, but as I keep preaching,
- 21:40I was a kid and I got to do
- 21:41all the things I like to do.
- 21:42I wasn't pigeonholed into one thing.
- 21:45And then I was good enough
- 21:46at swimming that I got a,
- 21:48I got a division one scholarship.
- 21:50That's outstanding.
- 21:51Where did you go?
- 21:51Ohio state.
- 21:53Okay.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:54My coach, Kyle Ruth, uh, swim in Indiana.
- 21:56So, uh, he's big into the swimming world.
- 21:58So you probably know about him.
- 22:00Yeah.
- 22:00I interviewed Kyle and we
- 22:01talked about that.
- 22:02Um,
- 22:03and he always loves the competition
- 22:04with a swim event.
- 22:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:07You don't even have to be D1
- 22:08level to typically win a
- 22:10swim event in CrossFit.
- 22:11So I love a swim event too
- 22:13because I'm definitely by
- 22:14no means as good as you two were.
- 22:16But I pretty much can always
- 22:17know I'll get top three if
- 22:19they're swimming.
- 22:19So really,
- 22:21really wish there were more of that.
- 22:24What's funny is I've been a
- 22:26judge in the sport.
- 22:27And watching people swim,
- 22:30I get like twitchy.
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:33And I watched your video of you swimming.
- 22:35You know how to swim.
- 22:36Yeah.
- 22:37There are a lot of
- 22:38CrossFitters that do not
- 22:39have that skill at all.
- 22:41And it's wild how much efficiency matters.
- 22:45Like, I...
- 22:46We went to,
- 22:47at that Southland camp that
- 22:48Corey was talking about,
- 22:49we had a session where we
- 22:50went to the pool and
- 22:50there's some really
- 22:51athletic people that are
- 22:52swimming a 25 and they are
- 22:55more out of breath than if they had done,
- 22:56you know, 50 burpees for time.
- 22:58I'm like, this is insane to me.
- 23:00Like, you know, you do a 25 and we're,
- 23:03you're not even breathing at all.
- 23:05It's a,
- 23:06it's crazy how big of a difference
- 23:07skill makes in swimming.
- 23:09Yeah.
- 23:09You should be relaxed when you swim.
- 23:11Yeah.
- 23:11Yeah.
- 23:13And it should be long
- 23:14strides unless you're doing a sprint,
- 23:17which never really happens in CrossFit.
- 23:20Right, right.
- 23:20Yeah.
- 23:22I wish it would pop up more,
- 23:24but I got to make it to the games,
- 23:25I guess, before I ever can do that.
- 23:27Corey says, man, he's talking about me.
- 23:32Nah.
- 23:33Well,
- 23:34when we got to Masters Fitness Collective,
- 23:36there was a swimming event.
- 23:38I think Corey just didn't want to drown.
- 23:40That was like his only goal.
- 23:43That's a good goal.
- 23:43And he didn't drown.
- 23:46That's a good goal.
- 23:46I mean,
- 23:47I know in some competitions like at
- 23:48Granite Games,
- 23:49they actually gave people
- 23:50like life jackets or little floaties,
- 23:52which it, you know,
- 23:54it's kind of embarrassing.
- 23:56Everyone would say like,
- 23:56I don't want to attach this
- 23:58floatie to myself.
- 23:59But I mean, it was an 800 meter swim.
- 24:00I'm like, you're out in a pond.
- 24:02You better,
- 24:02you better use it if you don't
- 24:03know how to swim or you're in trouble.
- 24:05Yeah, I mean,
- 24:05think about old-school CrossFit.
- 24:08Like, hey, easy,
- 24:09go out there and swim in this ocean.
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:11You can't swim.
- 24:12And then he's, like,
- 24:15hanging onto a paddleboard
- 24:16for life in the middle of the ocean.
- 24:19And ocean swimming is not –
- 24:20I don't care how good of a
- 24:21pool swimmer you are.
- 24:22Ocean swimming can expose you as well.
- 24:24It's so different.
- 24:25It beats you up in ways if
- 24:27you're not used to it.
- 24:28Yeah.
- 24:29Yeah.
- 24:30Yeah.
- 24:31It's rough, but –
- 24:33And you were asking in that IG post,
- 24:36you gave yourself a four on the dive.
- 24:39I'd give it a six.
- 24:40All right.
- 24:41Thank you.
- 24:43I was like, I hate videoing myself.
- 24:45Like it really is like cringy to me,
- 24:47even though I know it just has to happen.
- 24:48But I was like, please,
- 24:50I hope no one can see me.
- 24:51I hope no one can see me.
- 24:51And like someone was walking
- 24:53out onto the pool deck when
- 24:54I was like about the dive.
- 24:55So I'm like, you know what?
- 24:56I don't even have time to
- 24:57make this look pretty.
- 24:57I'm just going to record it.
- 25:00So yeah, it was pretty bad.
- 25:02so one of the off-season
- 25:03things you did was crash
- 25:04crucible yeah uh which my
- 25:07co-host jamie did um jamie
- 25:09latimer I don't know if you
- 25:10you guys met I think I met
- 25:12her we talked yeah I don't
- 25:13know if she'd remember me
- 25:14but we talked yeah um she
- 25:16knows who you are trust me okay
- 25:21So it was such a cool competition.
- 25:23I'd never really seen it
- 25:24until the Savant podcast
- 25:26broadcast it live.
- 25:28And all the cool toys that
- 25:31you guys got to play with
- 25:33in that weekend that you
- 25:34don't see at normal competitions,
- 25:36even up to semifinals.
- 25:38Those were like game style, weird objects.
- 25:42Yeah.
- 25:43I, I will,
- 25:45I probably said this on every
- 25:46podcast I've been on.
- 25:47I think crash crucible is hands down.
- 25:50First of all,
- 25:51the best competition I've ever done.
- 25:52I've done it three years, no two years now,
- 25:54I guess.
- 25:56But yeah,
- 25:57you don't get to do peg boards at
- 25:58any other competition.
- 25:59You don't get to do handstand hurdles.
- 26:01Like you don't,
- 26:01you've never even seen that
- 26:02in a competition really.
- 26:03I don't think up until crash,
- 26:04we got to swim one year
- 26:06with GHDs at the pool and,
- 26:08That was an awesome event,
- 26:09which took a lot of planning.
- 26:10I know on JR's part,
- 26:11but it's really interesting
- 26:13because it does kind of
- 26:14select for a specific athlete.
- 26:17I tend to historically do
- 26:18really well at crash
- 26:20because I like the higher skill stuff.
- 26:21And I practice that,
- 26:23which there's girls that
- 26:24are really probably a lot
- 26:25more talented than me that
- 26:26I can beat at crash just
- 26:28because the skill is such a separator.
- 26:31And you just don't see that at,
- 26:32at local competitions,
- 26:34even if it's a big local competition.
- 26:36So it's,
- 26:37I think I enjoy making Crash
- 26:38more than I do, honestly,
- 26:40a semifinal sometimes.
- 26:41So it's just a great competition.
- 26:44That is so cool.
- 26:45And I hope it stays that way
- 26:47for where people can
- 26:48qualify because I know
- 26:50after it got broadcast,
- 26:52more and more athletes want
- 26:53to be a part of it now.
- 26:55Oh, for sure.
- 26:55And I think it'll grow
- 26:57exponentially even just
- 26:58from this year to next year.
- 26:59But I know JR has mentioned
- 27:01that I think he wants to
- 27:02keep it at his gym.
- 27:03I don't think he wants to grow it out.
- 27:06I mean, I know he wants to grow it,
- 27:07but I think he likes the
- 27:09feel of having it at his affiliate,
- 27:10which I really like.
- 27:11Well, it's a huge gym.
- 27:14It's got two floors.
- 27:16You have the carpeted floor.
- 27:17You have the rubber floor.
- 27:19It was great.
- 27:22I'd love to go down for it.
- 27:24You should, you should come.
- 27:25I mean, he runs a tight ship too.
- 27:26So even with a smaller space,
- 27:28he would still make it run so well.
- 27:29And he treats the athletes
- 27:30like we're at the freaking
- 27:32CrossFit games.
- 27:32He's just, JR's outstanding.
- 27:36Yeah.
- 27:36I have, I have family in Charlotte.
- 27:38Well, I, my wife does.
- 27:39Yeah.
- 27:40And so I could have her stop her,
- 27:43drop her off in Charlotte,
- 27:44let her hang out there and
- 27:45then just head to Spartansburg.
- 27:47You should come.
- 27:47I think it's October the
- 27:49like first or second week in October.
- 27:50So.
- 27:51Yeah, it'd be fun.
- 27:53I really do want to get to more smaller,
- 27:55like what I'm calling
- 27:56mid-major competitions.
- 27:58Yeah.
- 27:59You know, not the Rogues, not the Dubais,
- 28:02not the Waterpaloozas,
- 28:03but like Metcon Rush and
- 28:06Crash and some of those fun competitions.
- 28:10I think it's more
- 28:11community-based and needs more public,
- 28:13more eyes on it.
- 28:15And you might find some up
- 28:16and comers that people
- 28:17don't spot until later on in the season.
- 28:20Like Jason Hopper burst onto
- 28:21the scene at crash.
- 28:22You know,
- 28:23he won crash and no one really
- 28:24knew who he was until I
- 28:25think Brian friend said
- 28:26something about him at crash.
- 28:27Same for Taylor.
- 28:28So, so yeah, it's awesome.
- 28:31So you're heading to semis.
- 28:33All the workouts have been released.
- 28:36Are you excited?
- 28:38Oh, I'm thrilled,
- 28:39especially now that it's more OG CrossFit,
- 28:41in my opinion.
- 28:42I'm like,
- 28:43this is back to like the regional days.
- 28:44You know, I, I, I am thrilled.
- 28:46I could not be more excited.
- 28:49Is there one event you're
- 28:49looking forward to more than the others?
- 28:52Um, from a performance standpoint,
- 28:55like I know I'll do well in it.
- 28:56I'm really excited about the
- 28:57running and the clean and jerk.
- 28:59Um,
- 28:59but that one hurts so bad that I'm not
- 29:01looking forward to it from
- 29:02that perspective.
- 29:03Um,
- 29:03I just know it'll hopefully be a good
- 29:05finish for me.
- 29:05And then I also am really,
- 29:07I think the legless workout
- 29:09is a really fun one to do
- 29:10and it's a fun one for
- 29:11spectators to watch.
- 29:12So I'm looking forward to
- 29:13that one as well.
- 29:15Yeah.
- 29:16I think a lot of these are fun to watch.
- 29:19It is old school CrossFit.
- 29:21Yeah.
- 29:23It's easy to see the story
- 29:25develop on the floor, snatch ladder.
- 29:28You're, you're, you know,
- 29:29you can see where everybody stands, uh,
- 29:31the rope climb workout.
- 29:32Don't you move the box down
- 29:34a little bit each time?
- 29:35Yeah, you do.
- 29:36Yeah.
- 29:36So it's like, yeah,
- 29:38I think it's going to be awesome.
- 29:40Is there a workout that just
- 29:42personally has something
- 29:44that you've been working on
- 29:45that you want to test yourself?
- 29:49Hmm.
- 29:50Um,
- 29:52Yeah,
- 29:52I think obviously the obvious answer
- 29:55would be the snatch ladder.
- 29:56I think that's little,
- 29:58that's less of an
- 29:59expression though of like
- 30:00the strength that I've gained.
- 30:03So I would actually have to say event two,
- 30:06which is the front squats, you know,
- 30:08the double unders and the toes to bar.
- 30:10That one,
- 30:11even though I think I'll do well
- 30:13in that one,
- 30:14the front squats two years
- 30:15ago at 155 would have,
- 30:18been an issue like I would
- 30:19not be doing them on broken
- 30:20you know and so um I'm
- 30:22really at least in how I've
- 30:23tested it I'm really I
- 30:25think I'm able to see the
- 30:26fruit of all of my strength
- 30:27work more than maybe even
- 30:29the snatch ladder which
- 30:30people perceive as the
- 30:30strength of it um but I
- 30:32think it shows up more in
- 30:33event too so I'm really
- 30:34pumped for that after
- 30:36watching Europe I think the
- 30:39final event is as much
- 30:41strength as anything else I
- 30:43would agree those dumbbells
- 30:45ate some people up
- 30:46Yeah, especially the guys.
- 30:48Yeah.
- 30:50Yeah.
- 30:51Have you played around with the 70s?
- 30:53I have.
- 30:54Yes.
- 30:54They, uh, again,
- 30:55another thing that two
- 30:56years ago would have wrecked me,
- 30:58but they are very tough.
- 31:00And I really think it comes
- 31:01down to the lunges.
- 31:03You can do everything really
- 31:04fast at the beginning,
- 31:05but someone there's going
- 31:06to be fun races because
- 31:08people who even break the muscle ups,
- 31:09I think we'll catch some
- 31:10girls who don't break the muscle ups, um,
- 31:13on the lunges.
- 31:13Cause if you can go unbroken on that,
- 31:15I mean,
- 31:15you're going to catch a ton of people.
- 31:16So yeah.
- 31:18Yeah.
- 31:18I think that'll be a really
- 31:19fun race and I'm excited for it.
- 31:20So.
- 31:22Yeah,
- 31:22I think I've talked to three TTT
- 31:25athletes out of the last
- 31:26four interviews I've done.
- 31:28So I was talking to Will
- 31:29Morad this morning,
- 31:30and he said that you and
- 31:33somebody else can have a
- 31:34completely different plan
- 31:35on that last one and both be right.
- 31:39That's interesting.
- 31:40Yeah, that's interesting.
- 31:42Because if you break up the
- 31:45muscle ups so that you can
- 31:47hang on to the dumbbell,
- 31:49you could be right.
- 31:50You could go unbroken and
- 31:52like just grit through the
- 31:54dumbbell and you're still
- 31:56going to be right.
- 31:57Yeah.
- 31:58Yeah.
- 31:58And there's a, I think that's one too,
- 32:00kind of like the
- 32:01quarterfinal workout with
- 32:02the snatches and the rowing
- 32:03where you can really play
- 32:04to your strengths.
- 32:05Yeah.
- 32:06And really, like you kind of said,
- 32:08have two totally different strategies,
- 32:09but because you're
- 32:10different athletes and
- 32:11you're able to identify
- 32:12where you're going to
- 32:13succeed and where you need
- 32:14to just be able to like
- 32:15manage in that workout.
- 32:17I think you could have an
- 32:18even result between two
- 32:19totally different strategies.
- 32:21Yeah, that's interesting.
- 32:22Do you like workouts like
- 32:24that that you have to strategize for you,
- 32:26the athlete?
- 32:27Or do you like it just where
- 32:29it's this is what it's on
- 32:30paper and it's go time?
- 32:33I, to be honest with you, Scott, I,
- 32:34I hate workouts with all
- 32:36the strategy just because I think it,
- 32:38a lot of it comes down to like,
- 32:39how good is your coach at
- 32:40helping you strategize?
- 32:41Um, I hate to,
- 32:42I don't say that about Kyle.
- 32:46No, no, no, no.
- 32:49He would actually be the first to tell you,
- 32:51I'm really bad at strategizing.
- 32:54But then secondly,
- 32:55I'm bad at asking him for
- 32:56his opinion with strategy.
- 32:58But like TTT,
- 32:59if you're familiar with some
- 32:59of the coaches there,
- 33:01there are some coaches
- 33:02there that are so analytical that it...
- 33:04is so it blows my mind like
- 33:06down to the every single
- 33:08detail and Kyle and I are
- 33:10not like that you know I'm
- 33:11sure Kyle is like that
- 33:12maybe with himself or some
- 33:13other athletes but just
- 33:14with our relationship we
- 33:16don't get that nitty-gritty
- 33:18and I like it it helps me
- 33:19not get too in my head like
- 33:21truly if I had a coach I
- 33:22think that was way too into
- 33:24the nuances then I would
- 33:26just forget how to even just
- 33:27grit and you know push
- 33:29through a workout mentally
- 33:30but to be honest I just
- 33:31love the ones where you
- 33:32just turn your mind off and
- 33:33it's like who is willing to
- 33:34hurt more and because you
- 33:37can really have a less fit
- 33:38person with a much better
- 33:40strategy and they come out
- 33:41on top and to me that just
- 33:42frustrating but I get it's
- 33:43a part of the sport so yeah
- 33:46yeah so like of the workouts
- 33:50this in a week you have that
- 33:53row handstand walk which is
- 33:54just gas pedal down and
- 33:56either you have it or you
- 33:57don't yeah you have you
- 33:59have the run clean and jerk
- 34:01do you have the engine to
- 34:02hold it or not yeah are
- 34:05those the workouts you like the best
- 34:08Yeah.
- 34:09Yeah, they are.
- 34:09And I mean, and even on those,
- 34:11you can still at least have
- 34:12a little strategy, but not overthink it.
- 34:14Right.
- 34:14Like you saw Amy Kringle go
- 34:16touch and go for a majority
- 34:18of that workout on the
- 34:18clean and jerks and you know,
- 34:21the last round she didn't,
- 34:22but it still came down to who's fitter.
- 34:24Right.
- 34:25Like in my opinion, it,
- 34:27the strategy wasn't really
- 34:29going to help you win.
- 34:30It could help.
- 34:31It could make you lose if you,
- 34:33if you blow up, cause you're,
- 34:34trying to go touch and go or
- 34:36whatever and she she did
- 34:37amazing in that workout but
- 34:38those are the ones I like
- 34:39yeah where it's kind of
- 34:40like let's just go out
- 34:41there and and grind and
- 34:43kind of like the war of
- 34:44attrition that dave castro
- 34:45is known for when he
- 34:46programs the crossfit games
- 34:47like way back in like you
- 34:50know 2014 let's just do
- 34:50murph and see who's not
- 34:52gonna have a heat stroke
- 34:52you know yeah yeah well and
- 34:56you talk about amy kringle
- 34:57and gabby mcgowan
- 34:59Right.
- 34:59Right.
- 35:13yeah yeah and I mean they
- 35:16know themselves so well it
- 35:17could have been that yeah
- 35:19it was just like that's how
- 35:20you know in order to pace
- 35:21the runs going touch and go
- 35:22on the clean and jerks like
- 35:23helped her not go go out
- 35:24too fast you know you never
- 35:26know what people's strategy
- 35:27is so I don't want to like
- 35:28assume but yeah it ended up
- 35:29being a net zero I think
- 35:31yeah yeah and both are
- 35:33going to the game so top two so yeah
- 35:38Yeah,
- 35:39but it is fun to watch when you when
- 35:41you can't watch the run.
- 35:42That was the frustrating thing, right,
- 35:44of that broadcast,
- 35:46because I'd love to watch it.
- 35:49You only get to see the
- 35:50weightlifting strategy,
- 35:51not the running strategy.
- 35:53Yeah, you're left to just kind of assume.
- 35:56So I'm assuming you watched Europe.
- 35:59do you like like I talked to
- 36:01fee this morning she's like
- 36:02I had my notebook out I I'm
- 36:04watching the workouts I'm
- 36:05taking notes um I talked to
- 36:07will he's like yeah I'm
- 36:08looking for data points
- 36:10I've talked to other
- 36:11athletes that are like I
- 36:12can't watch it it just
- 36:13makes me too anxious really
- 36:15yeah um I watched it uh and
- 36:19I definitely like looked at
- 36:20splits you know what people
- 36:21were holding on the rower um
- 36:24and stuff like that.
- 36:25So I definitely would
- 36:26probably be more on the analytical side,
- 36:27like with Fee and Will.
- 36:28I kind of watch it once for
- 36:31enjoyment and then secondly for data.
- 36:33Yeah, that's very much what Fee did.
- 36:37Yeah.
- 36:38One time through for fun,
- 36:39another time with the notebook,
- 36:41kind of looking for things, tips, tricks,
- 36:44anything she can find.
- 36:46But she said by the time you're week three,
- 36:48like everybody's doing that in her mind.
- 36:52Right.
- 36:52And like the thing I've
- 36:53never understood really about, like,
- 36:55you know,
- 36:55some athletes are really
- 36:56hesitant to share scores
- 36:57like testing times and
- 36:59quarterfinals scores and all that.
- 37:01And while I've had my
- 37:02moments where I'm kind of
- 37:03hesitant to show that stuff in my mind,
- 37:05it's like, all right,
- 37:07you're as fit as you're.
- 37:08You're as fit as you are.
- 37:09Right.
- 37:10And so if I'm looking at
- 37:11these girls and all their
- 37:12split times and stuff, to me,
- 37:14it's not like threatening
- 37:16or it's not anxiety
- 37:17provoking because it's like
- 37:19that can only help me
- 37:21further refine the fitness
- 37:23and the plan that I already have.
- 37:25But if Laura Horvath is
- 37:27pulling a one forty five
- 37:28pace on the row in the handstand walk,
- 37:32I don't care what strategy I
- 37:33have or what data points I
- 37:34take from that workout.
- 37:35I'm not going to be pulling that.
- 37:36And so it's kind of just like,
- 37:38and maybe it's just my personality,
- 37:40but I'm kind of like, if I,
- 37:41if someone knows my
- 37:41quarterfinal score or
- 37:42someone knows my semifinal testing time,
- 37:45I mean,
- 37:45you have to still get significantly.
- 37:49It's kind of like you can
- 37:50only improve or utilize
- 37:51that so much to your
- 37:53benefit in my opinion.
- 37:54So.
- 37:55I am so glad you said that.
- 37:57So I'm going to hit you with
- 37:58this line of questioning.
- 38:00Yeah.
- 38:00Last year they did this
- 38:02Taylor versus the world
- 38:04where Jason Hopper and
- 38:06Colton Mertens and Dallin
- 38:07Pepper came to town and
- 38:09took him on for quarterfinals.
- 38:11They brought in fee to go up
- 38:13against someone from crash to do that.
- 38:15And they got all this exposure.
- 38:17I've talked to a lot of
- 38:19female act or athletes who are afraid,
- 38:21not afraid.
- 38:22I shouldn't say afraid.
- 38:23Yeah.
- 38:24Who want to hold their
- 38:25scores close to the vest as
- 38:27you described.
- 38:29I contend that's the way to
- 38:30grow the sport by
- 38:32televising another aspect of the season.
- 38:36Are you telling me you would
- 38:37be willing to do that like
- 38:39live and put it out there?
- 38:44Yeah, 100%.
- 38:45I think, like, for example, Lindsay Lane,
- 38:47she's, you know,
- 38:48the other girl that competed against Fi.
- 38:49She did crash in one crash,
- 38:51and I know her decently well.
- 38:54And she is an amazing athlete that has not,
- 38:58I don't think,
- 38:58individually been to semis.
- 38:59She's been on a team.
- 39:00But, like, she deserves, like,
- 39:02that spotlight...
- 39:04get her name out there.
- 39:05She did amazing on the workouts,
- 39:07like Fi being willing to go
- 39:09and do that as well and
- 39:10then compete against each other,
- 39:11I think is so good for the sport.
- 39:13It shows a lot of confidence too, I think,
- 39:15in just themselves being able to say, hey,
- 39:17like, you know,
- 39:18I'm going to put it out there.
- 39:19If you're fit enough to beat it,
- 39:20like props to you,
- 39:21you're fit enough to beat it, you know?
- 39:23And so I think that is the
- 39:24way to push the sport forward,
- 39:27get names out there that
- 39:28people don't know about.
- 39:29If someone asked me to do
- 39:30that in a heartbeat,
- 39:31I would do it.
- 39:32And I mean,
- 39:32you can retest workouts if you want,
- 39:34but I just think that was
- 39:35so cool that they did that.
- 39:37Well, and the guys did that, right?
- 39:38They had the, the,
- 39:40the attempt that they share,
- 39:42they shared with the world
- 39:43and a couple of them redid
- 39:44some of them just to like
- 39:45get better placements.
- 39:46Yeah.
- 39:47And so you're open to that,
- 39:48especially on when they
- 39:49give you six weeks to
- 39:51finish four workouts or whatever.
- 39:54Exactly.
- 39:55Yeah.
- 39:55But it's, it's,
- 39:56it becomes like people are
- 39:58now watching the quarterfinals.
- 39:59I can guarantee you no one
- 40:00other than Andrew Hiller
- 40:01was looking at quarterfinal
- 40:02videos two years ago, you know?
- 40:04So it, I just think that's so,
- 40:08so good for the sport.
- 40:09We could even do that in the open,
- 40:10you know, it would be amazing.
- 40:12It's kind of like getting
- 40:13you excited for semifinals.
- 40:15Well, and they did that.
- 40:16They, you know,
- 40:17someone came in to take on
- 40:18Taylor every week for the open,
- 40:20but I think all of that can
- 40:22be expanded to,
- 40:26I'll be just blunt with you.
- 40:27I'm putting your name down, right?
- 40:29For next season.
- 40:30Let's do it.
- 40:32My only contention is all my
- 40:34co-hosts are female.
- 40:35I don't think there's enough
- 40:37female representation in the media,
- 40:39in the space.
- 40:40And I would love to do it
- 40:42with a group of women who are willing to.
- 40:45That's cool.
- 40:45We like that.
- 40:47And so that's my plan for next season.
- 40:50And I'm glad you said that
- 40:51you'd be willing to do that.
- 40:52So yeah.
- 40:54Yeah.
- 40:55And it helps the,
- 40:56I think the media platform as well too,
- 40:57because you know,
- 40:58people want to see
- 40:59strategies and they look up tip videos,
- 41:01but nothing really beats
- 41:02watching someone do it.
- 41:03So yeah.
- 41:04Well, and if you watch, if you watch,
- 41:06and JR's great at what he does and,
- 41:09and John Young's great at what they do,
- 41:10but they really focus on
- 41:12the male side of the sport.
- 41:14Yeah.
- 41:14Like that's why I brought on
- 41:15Carolyn Prevo because she
- 41:17gives a perspective that is
- 41:19different and that is more,
- 41:22more appropriate for people like you.
- 41:23You don't know what she has
- 41:26to say about the women's side and,
- 41:28and is it scaled or is it, are the, the,
- 41:31is the programming appropriate?
- 41:33Things like that.
- 41:35And that's sorry.
- 41:35I know we're wrapping up on time, too.
- 41:37But like, that's interesting.
- 41:38You bring that up, too,
- 41:38because I hear a lot of commentary.
- 41:41I like this podcast a lot.
- 41:42So I listen to them a good bit.
- 41:43And John Young specifically
- 41:45and a lot of the guys like
- 41:46they and they are very
- 41:48quick to say the girls
- 41:49weight should be heavier
- 41:50pretty much every single workout.
- 41:52While there are some,
- 41:53I do agree with them.
- 41:54It's kind of frustrating because I'm like,
- 41:56okay, you know,
- 41:57if the girls barbell was
- 41:59135 for this clean and jerk run event,
- 42:01like that changes it completely.
- 42:04Maybe not for like the strongest girls,
- 42:06but it's like, I just,
- 42:08it's kind of frustrating hearing,
- 42:09you know, some people say every single,
- 42:11single workout, like, oh,
- 42:12it should be heavy for the girls.
- 42:13It's not heavy enough, yada, yada, yada.
- 42:14I'm like, okay, like that's,
- 42:16try being a girl and doing
- 42:18that and just see, you know, so,
- 42:19and I know I'm a biased
- 42:20athlete cause I'm more of a,
- 42:22on the aerobic side, but yeah,
- 42:24I think it'd be good to
- 42:24have some female represent
- 42:25representation to,
- 42:26to push back on that and be like,
- 42:28that changes the workout completely.
- 42:29It doesn't have to be one 35
- 42:31to be effective.
- 42:32And here's why here only,
- 42:35they only pay attention to
- 42:36the top 10 athletes in the space.
- 42:38Yes.
- 42:39Yeah.
- 42:39Laura Horvath,
- 42:40she can throw around that kind of weight.
- 42:41Gabby McGowan can throw
- 42:42around that kind of weight, but,
- 42:45I've been for three years
- 42:46now trying to get exposure
- 42:48for the semifinal athletes 10 through 50.
- 42:51Yeah.
- 42:53Right.
- 42:54That's the only way we grow
- 42:55the sport is if you know
- 42:56the players on the field.
- 42:57Right.
- 42:58Right.
- 42:59And so I agree with you.
- 43:02And Jamie says it all the
- 43:03time because she is a smaller athlete.
- 43:05She's 5'1".
- 43:07She's doing her best to keep up.
- 43:09But making the barbell
- 43:11heavier is not an advantage for her.
- 43:14And sometimes, yes, you should.
- 43:16But it's like getting all up
- 43:18in arms about the barbell
- 43:19being 85 pounds versus 95
- 43:21for that snatch quarterfinal workout.
- 43:23It's like...
- 43:24like for some,
- 43:25for most people that doesn't
- 43:26make a big difference, but so like,
- 43:28let's just keep it at what
- 43:29it's programmed at and just chill.
- 43:31But you know, maybe that's just me.
- 43:32Sometimes it just drives me crazy.
- 43:33So I'm glad you bring that up.
- 43:34In the comparison between men and women,
- 43:36none of that matters.
- 43:38The men don't prevent you
- 43:40from taking the podium spot, right?
- 43:42Right.
- 43:42Like why does it have to be comparable?
- 43:44Right.
- 43:46To get it as close as possible,
- 43:48but you want the sport to
- 43:49be fair and equitable for each side.
- 43:53Yes.
- 43:53100%.
- 43:53I think that's a great, yeah.
- 43:55I love what you're doing too.
- 43:56I really have appreciated
- 43:58how you've really tried to
- 43:59get out everyone else's
- 44:00name other than just the
- 44:01top 10 because yeah,
- 44:02you work really hard and no
- 44:04one knows who you are sometimes.
- 44:05And so it can just be really, uh,
- 44:08it can be mean a lot when
- 44:09people like you guys want
- 44:10to get our names out there.
- 44:11So, yeah, it's funny you say that.
- 44:13Cause that's what I feel.
- 44:14I feel like I'm one of you.
- 44:15Yeah.
- 44:16right like I'm not the
- 44:17biggest podcast in the
- 44:18space I don't get my name
- 44:20out as much as the others
- 44:22and I think together we'll
- 44:24work our butts off to get
- 44:25there heck yeah everyone
- 44:27loves it everyone loves a
- 44:28proverbial underdog even
- 44:30though we're we're making
- 44:32it I mean we're making a
- 44:32name for ourselves but I
- 44:34guess relatively we could
- 44:35be a little bit of underdog so
- 44:38My dog is losing his mind upstairs.
- 44:40Um, so anyway, the last question,
- 44:43and I'm sorry, I've kept you so long.
- 44:44I said, um, your goals for the weekend,
- 44:50right?
- 44:51You're coming in in the
- 44:52highest place you ever have
- 44:53after quarterfinals, right?
- 44:56What is your realistic goal
- 44:57going into semis this weekend?
- 45:00Um, first and foremost,
- 45:02I have more support than
- 45:03I've ever had coming to
- 45:05watch me this year.
- 45:05My family's never been to a
- 45:06CrossFit competition that I've done.
- 45:09I don't think they even
- 45:09really know what's going to
- 45:10hit them when they show up.
- 45:11I think they kind of think
- 45:12it's a little local competition.
- 45:14So for me,
- 45:15it's going to be the most
- 45:17important thing is going to be able,
- 45:19like being able to soak that in,
- 45:20like taking this as potentially like
- 45:22It could always be my last
- 45:23year enjoying the fact that
- 45:24my family is making the
- 45:25trip and all my friends are
- 45:26coming to watch me.
- 45:28But then secondly,
- 45:29I am someone who likes to
- 45:32have a goal like a quantitative goal.
- 45:34And I would I think top 20
- 45:36is very realistic for me to say.
- 45:40But I'd be really happy with
- 45:42the top 20 finish.
- 45:43And then I would love to
- 45:44have some workouts or at
- 45:45least one workout.
- 45:46I think I can get one in the top.
- 45:50So I'm going to be bold and say that,
- 45:51but there's one that I think I can.
- 45:54Yeah, I think so too.
- 45:56And I hope you get that.
- 45:59Did you get your athlete
- 46:01packet to see where the
- 46:02family gets to sit?
- 46:04So I saw something about
- 46:05they get to sit at the
- 46:05finish line or something.
- 46:07I'm like, I mean,
- 46:08depending on what heat you're in,
- 46:09it's going to matter more, but...
- 46:11So you've been there, right?
- 46:15In Knoxville at that Coliseum.
- 46:18And yeah,
- 46:19right there where I think you're
- 46:21going to run out for the
- 46:22loading dock for event one.
- 46:24I hope so.
- 46:25As long as it's not TSA line.
- 46:28Right there is they put
- 46:29those temporary stands at
- 46:30the finish line and you
- 46:32generally like they shuffle
- 46:33the families in and out per event.
- 46:36Oh, cool.
- 46:36Yeah.
- 46:37I'll have to make sure they
- 46:39know to do that.
- 46:39Cause they're going to have no idea.
- 46:41So I actually should read that packet.
- 46:42That's a really good idea.
- 46:43Yeah.
- 46:44And if you have to go down
- 46:45the flights of stairs to get there and I,
- 46:48yeah.
- 46:49And that's what this goes to.
- 46:50So that's how I know.
- 46:51Okay.
- 46:52I'll look out for you too.
- 46:53Yeah.
- 46:54Yeah.
- 46:55I made hotel reservations.
- 46:56I'm hoping that hoping I can
- 46:58get there next week.
- 46:59Heck yeah.
- 47:00I hope, I hope you get to be there.
- 47:01It's a, I enjoy following,
- 47:02following it last year when
- 47:04y'all would interview people.
- 47:04So.
- 47:05Yeah.
- 47:06Well, cool.
- 47:07Well, this has been awesome.
- 47:09Denise.
- 47:10Well, actually,
- 47:11Corey says never made sense
- 47:12to me to hide my scores
- 47:13times from anyone.
- 47:14You're going to do what you're going to do,
- 47:16regardless of what I do.
- 47:18Agreed.
- 47:20And Denise Moore,
- 47:22my favorite 65 plus athlete
- 47:24who is going to the games, says good luck,
- 47:26Ellie.
- 47:27Thank you, Denise.
- 47:28Good luck to you as well.
- 47:29I'll be watching you in Birmingham.
- 47:31Yes.
- 47:32Are you there just as a spectator?
- 47:34Yeah.
- 47:34I mean, honestly,
- 47:35I should look into volunteering.
- 47:37Um, I think that'd be really cool.
- 47:39Never been to the CrossFit games.
- 47:40Um,
- 47:41and so when I heard the masters is coming,
- 47:42I'm like, I'm for sure going to go,
- 47:43but I actually might find
- 47:44if I could help out in some way.
- 47:46So hang on one second.
- 47:49And then what I'll do is I'll say goodbye.
- 47:50Yeah.
- 47:51I'll talk to you for a second.
- 47:53Amy Hill says, good luck,
- 47:54Ellie cheering for you.
- 47:56Thank you, Amy.
- 47:58With that, everybody in the chat,
- 47:59thank you for being here.
- 48:00You guys are awesome.
- 48:02And we'll see everybody next
- 48:04time on Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 48:07Bye, guys.
- 48:08See you, guys.
