Speaker 2: want to welcome into the show now, though it's been
• 2:16
Speaker 2: a while since he's been on the show. From a
• 2:18
Speaker 2: House Majority leader, Rick Staton, good morning, sir, welcome to
• 2:21
  Speaker 2: the show.
• 2:21
Speaker 4: Good morning, Thank you for having me.
• 2:23
Speaker 2: It has been a while since we've had you on.
• 2:25
Speaker 4: How you been I've been doing well.
• 2:26
Speaker 2: Thanks all right. Well, we had your scheduled a couple
• 2:28
Speaker 2: of weeks ago and you had had a little minor
• 2:30
Speaker 2: accident and I hope that you're doing better now you've
• 2:32
  Speaker 2: recovered nicely.
• 2:33
Speaker 4: I see, thank you. I am all right.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: So you, obviously, Rick have opinions on the way things
• 2:40
Speaker 2: are now politically, and you're not shy about sharing them
• 2:43
Speaker 2: on social media, which, by the way, if you don't
• 2:44
Speaker 2: follow mister statement and social media, you certainly should. And
• 2:48
Speaker 2: this columns type to pop up from time to time
• 2:51
Speaker 2: into gazette mail. We'll get to all that a little
• 2:52
Speaker 2: bit later on. But I didn't want to talk to
• 2:54
Speaker 2: you a little bit about your career under the dome. Now,
• 2:57
Speaker 2: what was it that made a kid from Mullin in
• 3:00
Speaker 2: Wyoming County wants to rise up through the ranks to
• 3:04
Speaker 2: be the House majority leader? To talk us to how
• 3:06
  Speaker 2: you got there.
• 3:07
Speaker 4: You know, when I was in high school, I was
• 3:09
Speaker 4: in a program through High WHI that had a model
• 3:14
Speaker 4: legislature called Youth and Government, and I was always in
• 3:19
Speaker 4: the House of Delegates. In my senior year in high school,
• 3:22
Speaker 4: I was the Speaker of the House, and from that
• 3:25
Speaker 4: day forward, my goal in life was being the House
• 3:27
Speaker 4: of Delegates. And you know, I achieved that goal center
• 3:31
Speaker 4: in my life than I thought I would and stayed
• 3:33
Speaker 4: longer than I thought I would.
• 3:34
Speaker 2: But how long were you there total in the leg leature?
• 3:37
  Speaker 4: Eighteen years?
• 3:37
Speaker 2: Eighteen years? All right, give us a couple of really
• 3:40
Speaker 2: good stories there. You know, I have Danny Jones on
• 3:42
Speaker 2: the show every Monday, and Danny last week. Well, anytime
• 3:46
Speaker 2: I have Danny on, he loves to tell stories about
• 3:49
Speaker 2: the thing. Give us a couple of good, colorful stories
• 3:51
  Speaker 2: from allegedleature.
• 3:53
Speaker 4: You know, one kind of funny story is when Bob
• 3:56
Speaker 4: Kiss was speaker and I was a majority leader. You
• 3:59
Speaker 4: have what are basically playbooks where you go through every
• 4:03
Speaker 4: page and the speaker majority of leader on the same
• 4:06
Speaker 4: page on uh, you know, what's what's coming up, what's
• 4:09
Speaker 4: the next item of business? And I did not know this,
• 4:13
Speaker 4: but a friend had planted a picture of me from
• 4:17
Speaker 4: fourth grade when I was in a dancing class and
• 4:20
Speaker 4: a blue sequin to tuxedo. And we're flipping through those pages.
• 4:25
Speaker 4: And I flipped and saw that and just cracked up
• 4:28
Speaker 4: and left the chamber, and uh, you know, Bob was
• 4:31
Speaker 4: in on it, and some of the others were, but
• 4:34
Speaker 4: the rest of the house didn't even know what was
• 4:36
Speaker 4: going on. But I, you know, I couldn't recover from
• 4:39
Speaker 4: that moment to go back on the script.
• 4:42
Speaker 2: It was a you know, and I've talked to people
• 4:45
Speaker 2: from time to time the show, as I mentioned Danny
• 4:47
Speaker 2: and others that have said it was a it was
• 4:49
Speaker 2: a totally different time. And then that's to be expected.
• 4:52
Speaker 2: I mean, everything can't remain the same. But I have
• 4:55
Speaker 2: always wondered what it would be like, you know, somebody
• 4:59
Speaker 2: covering doing I've been in this show since twenty twenty,
• 5:01
Speaker 2: but if I put the clock back to late nineteen
• 5:03
Speaker 2: ninety or ninety five or even the eighties or whatever.
• 5:06
Speaker 2: It was just a totally different time.
• 5:07
  Speaker 5: You know.
• 5:07
Speaker 2: It wasn't the era of social media, certainly not to
• 5:10
Speaker 2: the extent we have now. There wasn't as much coverage,
• 5:14
Speaker 2: immediate coverage. I mean, you know, the television stations and
• 5:17
Speaker 2: WHS radio we covered it, but it wasn't as immediate
• 5:22
Speaker 2: as it is now. It's a totally different time now,
• 5:24
  Speaker 2: it is.
• 5:25
Speaker 4: I use as an example of that day that in
• 5:28
Speaker 4: the press understandably went crazy when we did this, But
• 5:32
Speaker 4: we had some major issue that I can't remember what
• 5:35
Speaker 4: it was. But caucuses are closed to the public, and
• 5:39
Speaker 4: the Democrats called a caucus in the House at a
• 5:41
Speaker 4: certain time, and the Republicans called a caucus in the
• 5:45
Speaker 4: House at the very same time, and so all of
• 5:48
Speaker 4: us caucused together with the press and the public excluded.
• 5:53
Speaker 4: But we worked on a compromise for what that legislation
• 5:56
Speaker 4: would look like. And that would never happen today current atmosphere.
• 6:01
Speaker 2: Why do you say it would never happen?
• 6:03
Speaker 4: The hyper partisanship along the party lines and the and
• 6:08
Speaker 4: the lines that have been drawn have just been very
• 6:11
Speaker 4: disturbing to me. Uh, you know, it just seems that
• 6:15
Speaker 4: you know, they shouted each other rather than one for
• 6:17
Speaker 4: consensus and compromise. And uh uh you know some of
• 6:22
Speaker 4: the things, like I mentioned in a calm on a
• 6:24
Speaker 4: couple of weeks ago, just uh frankly upon me. Uh,
• 6:27
Speaker 4: we used to meet every Friday with the governor. Uh
• 6:31
Speaker 4: and uh to have read a few weeks ago that
• 6:34
Speaker 4: Vernon Cres the House financed here said he had not
• 6:36
Speaker 4: spoken to the governor since the legislative session started just
• 6:40
Speaker 4: appalled me. And that the governor was outside Vernon's office, Uh,
• 6:45
Speaker 4: you know, gathering people on the Hope Scholarship legislation, but
• 6:49
Speaker 4: didn't even walk in and try to talk to him
• 6:51
Speaker 4: about it. That just I'm stunned about those kind of things.
• 6:55
Speaker 2: Talking again, uh with our buddy Rick Stateton here, why
• 6:59
Speaker 2: did you leave politics as member of the legislature.
• 7:03
  Speaker 4: Pardon me?
• 7:03
Speaker 2: Why did you leave? Why why did you not stay engaged?
• 7:06
Speaker 4: I would try do to illness. Voters got sick of me.
• 7:10
Speaker 4: I the one way to put it. Yeah, I lost
• 7:13
Speaker 4: selection in two thousand and six. Would at that time
• 7:18
Speaker 4: that we were a two seat district and Richard Browning
• 7:21
Speaker 4: was re elected and Mike Bird has defeated me.
• 7:25
Speaker 2: Mister Brownie just passed away sometime we're the last six
• 7:27
Speaker 2: months or something. Yeah, great, God, yeah he was I
• 7:29
Speaker 2: know him very well. A great game.
• 7:30
Speaker 4: And then two years later I was selected prosecutor.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Did you ever once consider going back or have you
• 7:36
  Speaker 2: considered it since?
• 7:38
Speaker 4: No, not really. I kind of believe what Robert Frost
• 7:42
Speaker 4: said about you can't go home again, and I, you know,
• 7:47
Speaker 4: I don't think that I could be as effective. And
• 7:52
Speaker 4: as my daughter told me, you know, people have urged
• 7:55
Speaker 4: me to run for office and specifically the legislature. Frankly,
• 7:58
Speaker 4: don't know if I could go from front road to
• 8:00
Speaker 4: the back row. Yeah, and so I have great memories
• 8:04
Speaker 4: up there and I kind of don't want to disturb them.
• 8:07
Speaker 2: You ever thought about doing a book?
• 8:09
  Speaker 4: I'm actually I wouldn't don't know if you would call
• 8:11
Speaker 4: it specifically a book, But my daughter bought me an
• 8:16
Speaker 4: autobiography that you fell out and answering questions, and that
• 8:19
Speaker 4: has led to writing very a lot of stories. And
• 8:24
Speaker 4: Judge Bean in Wood County, whom I served with, is
• 8:28
Speaker 4: also working on something and we've collaborated some to get
• 8:31
Speaker 4: stories together to kind of publish about funny moments but
• 8:37
Speaker 4: also behind the scene moments about you know, things that
• 8:40
Speaker 4: happened and how and why they got to be what
• 8:42
  Speaker 4: they are.
• 8:44
Speaker 2: Do you fast forward a little bit to where we
• 8:46
Speaker 2: are current day, and I said, the coverage of the
• 8:48
Speaker 2: legislature has changed because it's instantaneous now, I mean from
• 8:51
Speaker 2: members of the press corps immediately on X and on online,
• 8:55
Speaker 2: on the websites and so on and so forth. But
• 8:57
Speaker 2: even the delegates and these senators them, so they have
• 9:01
Speaker 2: many of them have a very big online presence. They
• 9:03
Speaker 2: constantly update their voters and their followers on what they're doing.
• 9:07
Speaker 2: They're using TikTok and things of that nature. How would
• 9:10
Speaker 2: you have adapted to that? I think I would have
• 9:14
Speaker 2: adapted very well to it. I don't understand a lot
• 9:17
Speaker 2: of technology, but I love what it can do for you.
• 9:19
Speaker 4: And you know, I was very proud, for example, that
• 9:23
Speaker 4: we responded to every letter or phone call from my
• 9:26
Speaker 4: district first, and then you know, as I grew in leadership,
• 9:30
Speaker 4: I got letters and culturom wider areas and that was
• 9:33
Speaker 4: an area that we didn't have emails and instant communication
• 9:37
Speaker 4: those kind of things, but we were still manageable to
• 9:40
Speaker 4: do that. And I think that in an error like this,
• 9:43
Speaker 4: there's really not an excuse for members of government to
• 9:48
Speaker 4: keep in touch with their constituents, either by releases or
• 9:52
Speaker 4: TikTok videos or even just personal responses to emails and texts.
• 9:56
Speaker 2: Did you ever think there would be a Republican super majority?
• 10:01
Speaker 2: I mean, because after you know, eight decades of Democratic control,
• 10:06
Speaker 2: I think, and I'm more interested in here in your opinion,
• 10:09
Speaker 2: I think that it's not as big a surprise that
• 10:11
Speaker 2: the Republicans would one day take over. But to the
• 10:15
Speaker 2: extent that they have now, is that a surprise to you?
• 10:19
  Speaker 6: Yes?
• 10:20
Speaker 4: And that those majorities grew. I think in twenty fourteen
• 10:22
Speaker 4: there was a lot of frustration with the Democratic Party
• 10:26
Speaker 4: and I think, you know, it sounds small, but that
• 10:28
Speaker 4: bumper sticker that they had that said eighty years or
• 10:31
Speaker 4: whatever is enough. I think that was a very effective
• 10:34
Speaker 4: communication and people said, you know what, let's try something different.
• 10:39
Speaker 4: And I think that was an effective message. And to
• 10:43
Speaker 4: their credit, they had candidates in place across the state,
• 10:47
Speaker 4: and so when people soured on the Democratic brand, people
• 10:51
Speaker 4: were ready to the Republican and there were people in
• 10:54
Speaker 4: places to replace those people, and that's how the takeover happened.
• 10:59
Speaker 2: What do you make of the current Democratic Party rick
• 11:01
Speaker 2: particularly on the national level, because and I think you
• 11:04
Speaker 2: would probably agree with this, the National Democratic Party has
• 11:08
Speaker 2: changed over the years, and to be fair, for that matter,
• 11:10
Speaker 2: so has the National Republican Party. We went from the
• 11:13
Speaker 2: Party of Reagan to the party of what we now
• 11:15
Speaker 2: have under Donald Trump. What do you make of the
• 11:18
Speaker 2: current National Democrats and the National Republicans?
• 11:23
Speaker 4: This is where I think there is a somewhat disconnect
• 11:25
Speaker 4: between National Democratic Party and the state Democratic voters, or
• 11:30
Speaker 4: the voters in West Virginia. West Virginia has already always
• 11:34
Speaker 4: been a more moderate conservative state, and so what people
• 11:39
Speaker 4: hate the labels, but what we call a progressive movement
• 11:43
Speaker 4: within the Democratic Party is something that I don't think
• 11:46
Speaker 4: is resonating well with the voters in West Virginia because
• 11:50
Speaker 4: we're still moderate to conservative in some of our votes
• 11:53
Speaker 4: and issues. Some of those have migrated, but they haven't
• 11:56
Speaker 4: migrated to the extent that they have on the national level.
• 12:00
Speaker 4: And so I think that there's a disconnect between what
• 12:04
Speaker 4: was being, you know, perpetuated by the National Party versus
• 12:08
Speaker 4: our attempts within the Democrat Party to try to perpetuate
• 12:12
Speaker 4: that in West Virginia.
• 12:14
Speaker 2: Many people have said on the national level that the
• 12:18
Speaker 2: Democrats mistake in a lot of rural areas like West Virginia,
• 12:22
Speaker 2: you know a few other states as well, is that
• 12:24
Speaker 2: they focused on things that were just too far left
• 12:28
Speaker 2: and that as used to your point, that's not where
• 12:31
Speaker 2: the voter, where the electorate is in West Virginia, and
• 12:34
Speaker 2: that they need to bring it back by Many people
• 12:36
Speaker 2: think that at the midterms eventually, what is going to
• 12:40
Speaker 2: happen if the Democrats don't There's Bill Maher, one of
• 12:42
Speaker 2: my heroes, said last week, if they don't lose this
• 12:45
Speaker 2: or maybe it might have been Stephen A. Smith said
• 12:47
Speaker 2: on the Bill Moore Show, it's the midterms on a
• 12:51
Speaker 2: national level, are the Democrats to win if they don't
• 12:55
Speaker 2: screw it up by continuing to push these far left issues?
• 12:59
Speaker 2: To that you would say what.
• 13:01
Speaker 4: I think that both on a national and estate level,
• 13:04
Speaker 4: we need to focus on you know what are more
• 13:08
Speaker 4: coloquially called the kitchen table issues, and the price of gas,
• 13:14
Speaker 4: the price of groceries, the price of your utility bills.
• 13:18
Speaker 4: Those are the things that people are looking at right
• 13:20
Speaker 4: now and everything else is a distraction. And if you
• 13:25
Speaker 4: focus on those things and use what is called triangular
• 13:29
Speaker 4: discussion where you bring that discussion back to that point.
• 13:33
Speaker 4: I think we get distracted talking about those other issues,
• 13:36
Speaker 4: and then we go down rabbit holes talking about the
• 13:40
Speaker 4: you know, the device of cultural social issues when actually
• 13:44
Speaker 4: people at home are saying, you know what, my power
• 13:46
Speaker 4: building up by thirty percent last month, gas is up
• 13:50
Speaker 4: you know, a dollar and twenty nine since the war started.
• 13:53
Speaker 4: And I think those are the areas where candidates of
• 13:56
Speaker 4: all parties need to focus. I'm not trying to brand
• 14:00
Speaker 4: one or the other, but that's what people at home thinking.
• 14:02
Speaker 2: About your thoughts on President Trump.
• 14:07
Speaker 4: I think that he is, to be honest, that continually
• 14:11
Speaker 4: unhinged and unchecked. And I don't know if there is
• 14:15
Speaker 4: a mental or other deficiency or if this is just
• 14:18
Speaker 4: who he is. And he's surrounded by people who, you know,
• 14:21
Speaker 4: do not close the door and say, wait a minute,
• 14:24
Speaker 4: let's reflect on this, and we, frankly, in my judgment,
• 14:29
Speaker 4: suffer from that. And I think the warrant Iran is
• 14:32
Speaker 4: an example, and I think it's going to be a
• 14:35
Speaker 4: quagmire that from which the world economy may not recover.
• 14:39
Speaker 2: He seems to think it's all going to come to
• 14:41
  Speaker 2: an end tonight.
• 14:42
Speaker 4: Yeah. I you know, I just was seeing your news
• 14:44
Speaker 4: story about some bombing on Cargu Island, and you know,
• 14:49
Speaker 4: I don't know. These are times where the norms don't
• 14:52
Speaker 4: apply internationally, economically, militarily, and so I mean, I don't
• 14:59
Speaker 4: know what the result it's going to be. But there's
• 15:02
Speaker 4: certainly not times that we're used to where we can
• 15:04
Speaker 4: say that there's a predictable result from what we what
• 15:08
Speaker 4: we're going to do. You know, will bombing bridges and
• 15:11
Speaker 4: power plants actually foam in a revolution within the country
• 15:16
Speaker 4: where they take over from from that regime, I don't know.
• 15:20
Speaker 4: It may drive them further into their their political ideology
• 15:25
Speaker 4: and hate us worse. In the straight of form News
• 15:27
  Speaker 4: remains closed.
• 15:29
Speaker 2: Rick Stayton has been a pleasure to have you on
• 15:30
Speaker 2: a show today. Let's have you back on again soon.
• 15:33
Speaker 2: I mean, I could sit and talk about this stuff.
• 15:35
Speaker 2: I tell you what I have always wanted to do,
• 15:37
Speaker 2: and I'm gonna I'm going to give you an assignment.
• 15:40
Speaker 2: I want to do an entire show where I bring
• 15:43
Speaker 2: it and I'll put you in charge of it. You
• 15:45

• 19:13
  Speaker 2: the show.
• 19:14
Speaker 8: Morning Dave. Thanks man.
• 19:15
Speaker 2: You know, one of the things I want you to
• 19:17
Speaker 2: work on is the fact that the word entrepreneurial is
• 19:21
Speaker 2: too difficult to spell. In my time, when I was
• 19:25
Speaker 2: working in state government, I did a lot with entrepreneurship,
• 19:29
Speaker 2: and I never correctly learned how to spell the word
• 19:32
Speaker 2: entrepreneur That's probably why I'm back on the radio again.
• 19:35
Speaker 8: Well, we're thankfully the computers can correct that I spelled it.
• 19:40
Speaker 2: So bad the computer couldn't correct it. What does that
• 19:43
Speaker 2: tell you? Tell us about this program, Brian, and how
• 19:45
  Speaker 2: it gets started?
• 19:46
Speaker 8: So yeah, so yeah, I work for Advantage Valley. We've
• 19:51
Speaker 8: been I've been with him since twenty twenty two and
• 19:54
Speaker 8: the Faster WESTERNI program is a program designed to help
• 19:58
Speaker 8: aspiring entrepreneurs people who have an idea but not knowing
• 20:01
Speaker 8: really where to start, with businesses as as up to
• 20:07
Speaker 8: about three years, who have been in business for about
• 20:10
  Speaker 8: three years.
• 20:10
Speaker 2: What's the one thing that you see the most with
• 20:13
Speaker 2: these businesses? Because I would think that there's probably a
• 20:16
Speaker 2: lot of common denominators with the indivent, not the business,
• 20:19
Speaker 2: but I mean the individuals when it comes to trying
• 20:21
Speaker 2: to get their businesses up and running. The entrepreneurship I
• 20:23
Speaker 2: aspect of it's probably one or two things that you
• 20:25
Speaker 2: see in almost every case.
• 20:26
Speaker 8: Well, most of them have a day job, right, So
• 20:29
  Speaker 8: it's a they're looking to maybe supplement income. Maybe it's
• 20:36
Speaker 8: they just have a really good passion about something. I
• 20:38
Speaker 8: want to see if it's more than a hobby. We
• 20:42
Speaker 8: see that a lot, we don't. We do see some
• 20:44
Speaker 8: who are like straight out quitting the day job.
• 20:47
Speaker 2: But it doesn't happen that often. I mean generally speaking,
• 20:51
  Speaker 2: it's and i'd say probably, I don't want to put
• 20:53
Speaker 2: words about probably the only exception to that would be
• 20:56
Speaker 2: if you take these people, and I've always said this,
• 20:59
Speaker 2: and I learned this in my time state government, people
• 21:01
Speaker 2: that have a passion for something, no matter what it is.
• 21:05
Speaker 2: It's art, it's music, it's they want to teach lessons,
• 21:07
Speaker 2: they want to do whatever, and they got the idea, man,
• 21:11
Speaker 2: and they're all full of the passion, but they don't
• 21:13
Speaker 2: necessarily need to know how to go about it. And
• 21:17
Speaker 2: they have a daytime job or in some cases a
• 21:19
Speaker 2: nighttime job to be able so they can get theirs
• 21:23
Speaker 2: up and moving. And I just I think that's an
• 21:25
Speaker 2: interesting point that you brought up. Most people, the majority,
• 21:27
Speaker 2: are not quitting their other job to go chase this passion.
• 21:31
Speaker 2: They're usually doing something.
• 21:32
Speaker 8: Else right, right, And this challenge is to that one.
• 21:36
Speaker 8: You know, the first one is healthcare. Right when you
• 21:39
Speaker 8: get into being your own, your your own boss, that
• 21:44
Speaker 8: can get to that's that's a challenge for some people
• 21:46
Speaker 8: to to walk away from what they might have or
• 21:50
Speaker 8: to go with their own. But you know, back to
• 21:53
Speaker 8: the point about the passion part if if it's not
• 21:55
Speaker 8: something you're passionate about, then that's going to be a
• 21:59
Speaker 8: challenge because it's not easy to run your own business.
• 22:01
Speaker 2: No, it's not. And there's so much that goes into
• 22:04
Speaker 2: it that people don't realize. Again, you go back to
• 22:07
Speaker 2: the passion. I know how to make these things, whatever
• 22:10
Speaker 2: these things are. But I don't know the first thing
• 22:12
Speaker 2: about HR I don't know the first thing about insurance.
• 22:15
Speaker 2: I don't know the first thing about tax and things
• 22:17
Speaker 2: of that nature. And luckily we do have a lot
• 22:19
Speaker 2: of great resources here in the state. I mean, you've
• 22:21
Speaker 2: got the Small Business Development Center, you got the SBA,
• 22:24
Speaker 2: you've got organizations like yours, Charleston, your line, you've got
• 22:26
Speaker 2: help available in state government and you know so. But
• 22:29
Speaker 2: but sometimes that can be a challenge to a lot
• 22:31
  Speaker 2: of people.
• 22:32
Speaker 8: Right and it is. There's but when you when you
• 22:35
Speaker 8: reach out to us, you know, advantage Valley dot Com
• 22:37
Speaker 8: got our website, there's there's a button at the top.
• 22:40
Speaker 8: It's as fast as West Virginia. There's a lot of
• 22:42
Speaker 8: different ways you can connect to to me, to our
• 22:46
Speaker 8: business coaches. We can I just.
• 22:49
Speaker 2: Realized I've been saying Charleston near your life couple times.
• 22:54
Speaker 8: He messed it up.
• 22:55
Speaker 2: The first time, well at least I was con said,
• 22:57
  Speaker 2: I just I don't know what I was thinking. I've
• 22:59
Speaker 2: known you for over years, and I said, Charleston Area,
• 23:01
Speaker 2: it's you're with Advantage Valley. My apologies, my apologies to you,
• 23:06
Speaker 2: and to Tarrell and two and to Marjorie and everybody.
• 23:09
  Speaker 2: I apologize, Man, I don't know what. I don't know
• 23:11
Speaker 2: what I was thinking.
• 23:12
Speaker 8: I can only imagine Marjorie right now.
• 23:14
  Speaker 1: Marjorie.
• 23:14
Speaker 2: Sorry, Marjorie. You know what. I blame cancer for everything.
• 23:19
Speaker 2: So that's what it is. It's the cancer. I'm sorry. No,
• 23:23
Speaker 2: I'm sorry. No, it is Advantage Valley. I'm sorry. Man,
• 23:25
  Speaker 2: go ahead, but.
• 23:26
Speaker 8: Uh but yeah, there's ways to connect to us. But
• 23:28
Speaker 8: you know, kind of back to your your point, though,
• 23:30
Speaker 8: there's a lot of different things that you have to
• 23:33
Speaker 8: understand to successfully operate a business, right, and so what
• 23:38
Speaker 8: we're here to do is to help you navigate some
• 23:41
Speaker 8: of those. And you know, oftentimes people are not sure
• 23:45
Speaker 8: which business license to even get. Yeah, you have sole
• 23:48
Speaker 8: proprietor or LLC and you have Well we'll talk with
• 23:51
Speaker 8: you and help you understand the differences between the two.
• 23:53
Speaker 8: What's what Uh, you know the potential liabilities that are
• 23:58
Speaker 8: there by picking them one over the other.
• 24:00
  Speaker 4: Uh.
• 24:00
Speaker 8: And then people I just talked to a couple yesterday.
• 24:04
Speaker 8: It's a new business. They just started in February. They
• 24:10
Speaker 8: had not even thought about talking to an accountant yet,
• 24:13
Speaker 8: and they're already selling product.
• 24:15
Speaker 2: Right, So that's a restipe for disaster.
• 24:17
Speaker 8: It could be right, right, So you know there's things
• 24:20
Speaker 8: that it's expensive to run a business. I'm not gonna lie,
• 24:25
Speaker 8: but we can help you understand. You know what all
• 24:29
Speaker 8: those costs are going to be, and what's what's most
• 24:31
Speaker 8: important and what you can you know what you need
• 24:33
Speaker 8: to do to make sure you're setting yourself up correctly
• 24:37
Speaker 8: to give you the best opportunity.
• 24:39
Speaker 2: And branding is so important, especially if you know the
• 24:42
Speaker 2: difference between Advantage Valley and Charleston Area Alliance, that's even
• 24:46
Speaker 2: more important. That's on me.
• 24:47
Speaker 8: Yeah, one is on top of the history.
• 24:51
Speaker 2: As I said. The embarrassing thing about that, Brian is
• 24:53
Speaker 2: I've known you for a number of years and I
• 24:54
Speaker 2: don't know what I was thinking. I was going off
• 24:56
Speaker 2: on my field. You have an event coming up tonight
• 24:59
Speaker 2: featuring into the program. Jim Strawn absolutely actually today it's
• 25:03
Speaker 2: the middle of the day, a middle of the amswer yep.
• 25:05
Speaker 8: So we have some of the things we do are
• 25:07
Speaker 8: different types of workshops. This one today is called turn
• 25:11
Speaker 8: your Property into Opportunity and it's a it's an Airbnb
• 25:15
Speaker 8: workshop on how you set that up, the good and
• 25:18
Speaker 8: the bad, and how you can really make use of
• 25:21
Speaker 8: extra property that you have, whether it's an extra home
• 25:25
Speaker 8: or it's a piece of land. Right, there's different ways
• 25:28
Speaker 8: you can you can utilize that property to maybe earn
• 25:32
Speaker 8: some income from it. And so Jim is going to
• 25:34
Speaker 8: lead us today at twelve at the Kennall County Library.
• 25:38
Speaker 8: It's on the third floor and the bigger conference rooms.
• 25:41
Speaker 8: You can show up in person or you can go
• 25:43
Speaker 8: on our website and right in the middle you'll see
• 25:47
Speaker 8: upcoming events. There's a length there you can register for
• 25:49
Speaker 8: it and watch over zoom.
• 25:52
Speaker 2: And here's the thing about the airbnbs I think are
• 25:54
Speaker 2: interesting with people. Brian again we're talking with Brian Shaw
• 25:57
Speaker 2: of Advantage Valley. But people think of airbnb's, they only
• 26:01
Speaker 2: think of the beach, they only think of the mountains,
• 26:03
Speaker 2: and and there's certainly a lot of those there, but
• 26:05
Speaker 2: they're everywhere that people would be surprised to know how
• 26:08
Speaker 2: many of these that there are or similar types in
• 26:12
Speaker 2: Charleston and in uh in all over Kanawa County, Putnam County.
• 26:16
Speaker 8: I mean they're everywhere here, right, there's they they serve
• 26:19
Speaker 8: different purposes. There's some that people are you know, there's
• 26:23
Speaker 8: traveling traveling nurses, right, or a great example of people
• 26:26
Speaker 8: who are coming to the area. They're going to be
• 26:28
Speaker 8: here for six months or maybe a year, and they
• 26:32
Speaker 8: look to airbnb uh to to be able to rent
• 26:36
Speaker 8: a place long term, but not you know, committing to
• 26:39
  Speaker 8: a long lease.
• 26:40
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 26:40
Speaker 8: But then the tourism aspect of it. I mean, we
• 26:44
Speaker 8: our state runs so many ads outside of our state
• 26:47
Speaker 8: trying to attract people here. There's a lot of things
• 26:50
Speaker 8: we're doing here in the outdoor economy and the outdoor
• 26:53
Speaker 8: space that are you know, designed to bring people in
• 26:56
Speaker 8: here to enjoy this. I mean, it's it's just beautiful here.
• 26:59
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 27:00
Speaker 8: So there are places that you know are are ideal
• 27:05
Speaker 8: for for an airbnb, yeah.
• 27:07
Speaker 2: I mean, and and I've got a very good friend
• 27:10
Speaker 2: of mine who travels extensively for work, and he told
• 27:13
Speaker 2: me a couple of years ago, he said, once I discovered,
• 27:16
Speaker 2: you know, using facilities like that, I'm never going back
• 27:18
Speaker 2: to another hotel again because he stays as a matter
• 27:21
Speaker 2: of fact, anytime he's in Charleston, he stays in one
• 27:23
Speaker 2: which is in downtown Charleston.
• 27:25
  Speaker 10: You know.
• 27:25
Speaker 2: And because of the it's it's it's more like being
• 27:29
Speaker 2: in an actual home than being in the sterile hotel room.
• 27:32
Speaker 8: Yeap on. So that one's today, uh into next month,
• 27:40
Speaker 8: starting in May, we have another workshop that we're doing.
• 27:43
  Speaker 8: It's called the It's a Business Outdoor or it's an
• 27:47
Speaker 8: Outdoor Business Accelerator program. So this is going to be
• 27:51
Speaker 8: a little bit more intensive than a one, you know,
• 27:53
Speaker 8: an hour and a half workshop. With this one, we're
• 27:56
Speaker 8: looking to uh to find people who have an idea
• 28:00
Speaker 8: or an early stage business that is something that works
• 28:03
Speaker 8: in the outdoor. Now, that could be someone who wants
• 28:06
Speaker 8: to start a kayak rental business or a transportation business
• 28:11
Speaker 8: that transports people to and from those those outdoor spaces.
• 28:15
Speaker 8: Or maybe maybe they have some equipment that they've designed
• 28:19
Speaker 8: that they want to create that makes that works in
• 28:22
Speaker 8: the outdoor space. Or it's clothing, right, maybe they have
• 28:25
  Speaker 8: a new jacket design or a new i don't know,
• 28:29
Speaker 8: a new hat or a new shoes or all kinds
• 28:32
Speaker 8: of different things that work in the outdoor space. And
• 28:35
Speaker 8: this accelerator program is designed to help someone take that idea,
• 28:40
Speaker 8: work through it, make sure there's a market for it,
• 28:43
Speaker 8: help you with all those steps, and then ideally if
• 28:46
Speaker 8: if it if it fits, then you can we can
• 28:49
Speaker 8: help you launch it.
• 28:50
Speaker 2: Doing some great stuff over there with the Advantage Valley.
• 28:54
Speaker 2: Where can people learn more about all the things that
• 28:55
Speaker 2: because I mean there's so many things you can ask
• 28:57
Speaker 2: got going on over there. Where's the best place for
• 28:58
Speaker 2: people can learn more?
• 29:00
Speaker 8: So, of course follow us on our socials, but if
• 29:02
Speaker 8: you go to Advantage Value dot com and at the
• 29:04
Speaker 8: top you'll see faster w V click on that, and
• 29:09
Speaker 8: on that first landing page there's upcoming workshops, there's ways
• 29:14
Speaker 8: to connect to directly to our business coaches or myself
• 29:18
Speaker 8: and then and that's really the best way. And then
• 29:20
Speaker 8: of course signing up for the newsletter. Marjorie puts together
• 29:23
Speaker 8: a great newsletter every month that goes out that gives
• 29:26
Speaker 8: you the latest information on on on what's going on
• 29:29
Speaker 8: in the market and in ways that you can you
• 29:32
Speaker 8: can reach out to us for for support to help
• 29:34
Speaker 8: you with your with your business. Idea because we do
• 29:37
Speaker 8: I mean from business coaching to uh we do have
• 29:40
Speaker 8: some grants that we can use, and we even have
• 29:42
Speaker 8: a loan fund where we can help you get the
• 29:44
Speaker 8: money that you need to start that business. And all

Speaker 2: now that we have complete and total regime change, where different,
• 37:32
Speaker 2: smarter and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionary, wonderful

Speaker 2: of the most important moments in the long and complex

• 38:20
Speaker 2: It seems their talking points on the war are coalescing
• 38:23
Speaker 2: into a sellable narrative. Number one, Trump was forced to
• 38:26
Speaker 2: bomb Iran. Number two bombed Iran, which no other president

Speaker 2: would do. Three Trump is tough for bombing Iran. Four

• 39:27
Speaker 2: going to be Thursday, and it starts at eleven o'clock

• 39:41
Speaker 2: when you buy your bras breches. And as of all
• 39:44
Speaker 2: that weren't enough, Tony is going to be at the

Speaker 2: grill with his famous Italian sausage and pepper sandwiches, and
• 39:50
Speaker 2: I can tell you one hundred percent from experience, they
• 39:54
Speaker 2: are amazing. I'm just trying to figure out how I
• 39:58
Speaker 2: can talk somebody into going down there. Because I'm kind
• 40:01
Speaker 2: of busy, you know. I get to the building at
• 40:03
Speaker 2: seven in the morning. I don't leave till four or

Speaker 2: I don't know if this was when yourself, Ryan that
• 41:01
Speaker 2: was senting me this text or what. But apparently you
• 41:04
Speaker 2: can do that at Wendy's today, And if that's wrong,
• 41:06
Speaker 2: then I apologize to the good people of Wendy's. I
• 41:08
Speaker 2: did notice the other over the weekend watching some television,
• 41:11
Speaker 2: and I noticed that Wendy No, for years people have
• 41:14
Speaker 2: done the thing of dipping their fries into their frosty,
• 41:18
Speaker 2: and Wendy's is finally starting to own that now and
• 41:21
Speaker 2: they're actually advertising that. And I remember the first time
• 41:24
Speaker 2: I ever saw someone do that. I was in high
• 41:26
Speaker 2: school and a bunch of us were at Wendy's and
• 41:27
Speaker 2: Logan and I saw somebody do that, and I thought
• 41:30
Speaker 2: that just weird, and then I tried it. It's actually
• 41:33
Speaker 2: pretty good. It was actually pretty good. So that's a
• 41:37
Speaker 2: message from your friends there and Wendy's. Tex says one
• 41:42
Speaker 2: of the biggest issues with both the boomer Democrats and
• 41:45
Speaker 2: these young socialists is, if you actually listen to them,
• 41:48
Speaker 2: is how nasty some of these people are talk about
• 41:53
Speaker 2: beer for a moment, which I was earlier, and I mean,
• 41:57
Speaker 2: you can't talk about Tony via Taylor's Italian Sausage and
• 41:59
Speaker 2: not think about beer. Last night the Kanawha County Board
• 42:03
Speaker 2: of Education voted to approve beer sales at Laidley Field
• 42:06
Speaker 2: for events not I repeat, not affiliated with the school
• 42:10
Speaker 2: district now. The vote went four to one. Only one
• 42:14
Speaker 2: board member, Joe Crawford, vote no, and we have a
• 42:16
Speaker 2: story posted about it at wcchsnetwork dot com. The General
• 42:20
Speaker 2: council for the board, Lindsay McIntosh, told the board that
• 42:23
Speaker 2: beer sales would only be permitted at things like college
• 42:26
Speaker 2: football games or other events that don't involve public schools.
• 42:31
Speaker 2: So if you thought you were going to go to
• 42:32
Speaker 2: a game at Lately and get ripped, your local high
• 42:35
Speaker 2: school football game or the state championships, that's not the case.
• 42:38
Speaker 2: The field itself will not be selling the beer to
• 42:41
Speaker 2: be outside vendors, and they've allowed this for some time
• 42:43
Speaker 2: on different events that were happening there. So it's not
• 42:48
Speaker 2: going to be in high school football games or anything
• 42:49
Speaker 2: like that. And when you think about it, it's really
• 42:51
Speaker 2: not that different than what you see at a WV
• 42:53
Speaker 2: or Marshall game. Of course, there are people that are
• 42:56
Speaker 2: upset about it because you know you don't have that anyway,

Speaker 2: that's okay. But nobody makes fun of Dave more than
• 46:44
Speaker 2: Dave does. So when I called somebody whom I've known

Speaker 2: for well over ten years and put them with the
• 46:50
Speaker 2: wrong organization, I deserve to be I deserved a little
• 46:53
Speaker 2: kick in the backside for that. I did that, and
• 46:55
Speaker 2: I own it, and plus it was just kind of
• 46:56
Speaker 2: funny to me and Brian Shaw being the guy that
• 46:59
Speaker 2: he is, and the folks that have Andage Valley will
• 47:00
Speaker 2: probably get a big kick out of it too. Now

Speaker 2: I'm just going to from now on, every guest I

• 47:25
Speaker 2: his pedophile past. Says it's extra Brad has the lead
• 47:30
Speaker 2: story this morning wv Metronews dot com. This whole battle
• 47:35
Speaker 2: between the US Department of Justice and several Secretaries of State,
• 47:40
Speaker 2: including our own Chris Warner. There is a movement and
• 47:45
Speaker 2: we've talked about it in the past. Attorneys for the
• 47:47
Speaker 2: US Department of Justice, the DOJ, have filed a federal
• 47:52
Speaker 2: lawsuit over the release of sensitive voter registration information. Now,
• 47:59
Speaker 2: that was in February, and on Friday, the attorney for
• 48:05
Speaker 2: the Department of Justice officially filed a motion to force
• 48:09
Speaker 2: disclosure of voting records. So think about it this way.
• 48:15
Speaker 2: The states are in charge of the elections. That's in
• 48:17
Speaker 2: the constitution. States are in charge of the election. But
• 48:19
Speaker 2: what the Trump administration is wanting to do, and this
• 48:21
Speaker 2: is not new, they've tried this before. They want to
• 48:25
Speaker 2: force the states to turn over voter information to their administration,
• 48:34
Speaker 2: direct violation of everything because elections are left to the states.
• 48:39
Speaker 2: So on Friday, the Attorney for the DOJ officially filed
• 48:43
Speaker 2: this motion to disclose these voting records, including here in
• 48:47
Speaker 2: West Virginia. Secretary of State Chris Warner, who is a
• 48:51
Speaker 2: Republican former state Republican Party chair, big Trump bicker in
• 48:56
Speaker 2: the past, has said no to the request. Secretary Warner
• 49:03
Speaker 2: has now said no twice, and I say good on him,
• 49:09
Speaker 2: because what is being asked for here is a direct
• 49:14
Speaker 2: violation of the law. And this all goes back to
• 49:19
Speaker 2: the Trump administration trying to say that the election of
• 49:24
Speaker 2: twenty twenty was fraudulent, and it has been proven over
• 49:28
Speaker 2: and over and over again in court rooms and judges
• 49:31
Speaker 2: that were tied closely to the Trump administration that that
• 49:34
Speaker 2: wasn't the case. And again the twenty nine States and
• 49:40
Speaker 2: also DC in there have just basically said no, this
• 49:44
Speaker 2: is not your information. The law is pretty clear it
• 49:48
Speaker 2: belongs to the states. Now the case has been assigned
• 49:52
Speaker 2: to US History Judge Thomas Johnston, and it's going to
• 49:56
Speaker 2: be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out.
• 50:01
Speaker 2: I applaud Secretary of State Chris Warner and the other
• 50:06
Speaker 2: twenty United States and DC for saying no to this.
• 50:11
Speaker 2: And look, I've known Chris Warner and full disclosure I
• 50:15
Speaker 2: worked for his brother. It puts them in a difficult position,
• 50:21
Speaker 2: and from a political standpoint, I get that. I understand that.
• 50:24
Speaker 2: But they're doing the right thing, as are these other
• 50:27
Speaker 2: Secretary of State in voting officials from around the country,
• 50:30
Speaker 2: because this is a direct violation of the law. And
• 50:33
Speaker 2: I just wonder what Ronald Reagan would think about the
• 50:38
Speaker 2: Republican Party wanting so much national central control, in this
• 50:45
Speaker 2: case over the states, much like many, not all, many
• 50:52
Speaker 2: Republicans on this state level have wanted to do getting
• 50:56
Speaker 2: involved in more local issues. Just me thinking out loud,
• 51:03
Speaker 2: tex says, Taco stands for Trump always chickens.
• 51:08
  Speaker 7: Out according to a texture. How's it going, t J,
• 51:12
Speaker 7: It's going? Well, where does it stop? And I'm talking
• 51:16
Speaker 7: about ignoring the rule of law. You know, everybody got
• 51:19
Speaker 7: on my case about TikTok. We had a law that
• 51:22
Speaker 7: said you can't have that here. We ignored it. We
• 51:26
Speaker 7: continue to ignore it. We ignore it until we get
• 51:29
Speaker 7: whatever deal will make it better. That's a crack in
• 51:31
Speaker 7: the damn. Now we want to ignore this. We want
• 51:34
Speaker 7: to ignore the rule of law that says the government
• 51:36
Speaker 7: doesn't need this information. This is state information. We don't
• 51:39
Speaker 7: care give it to us anyway. What's next? Where does
• 51:42
Speaker 7: it stop? That's the problem with even the tiniest little
• 51:46
Speaker 7: disregard for the rule of law, like the TikTok thing.
• 51:50
Speaker 7: It gets easier the next time, easier, the next time, easier,
• 51:52
Speaker 7: the next time after that.
• 51:54
Speaker 2: Good for Warner? I mean, isn't it so anti Republican though?
• 51:58
Speaker 2: I mean there was a time that Republiclks didn't want
• 52:00
Speaker 2: everything out of DC, and they didn't want out of
• 52:02
  Speaker 2: everything out of.
• 52:02
Speaker 7: Charge because most Republicans these days aren't real Republicans.
• 52:06
Speaker 2: They're not conservatives. All right, Greg Thomas, appreciate you, uhbod,
• 52:11
