- 0:46Speaker 1: What are we talking about now? This week? Week two?
- 0:49Speaker 1: NFL season is here. I got a couple of things
- 0:52Speaker 1: I want to get into. I'm I'm gonna walk you
- 0:54Speaker 1: out through my lineup that I like the most this week.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I put a few together, but this one, I like
- 0:59Speaker 1: a gonna go to this Green Bay Packers game. Josh
- 1:02Speaker 1: Jacobs more than a half a touchdown receiving or rushing.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Matthew Golden, the rookie, the wide receiver, first round pick,
- 1:12Speaker 1: more than thirty four and a half receiving yards. Jamar
- 1:16Speaker 1: Chase from the Bengals had a really rough Week one.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I like him to bounce back against that Jacksonville Jaguars
- 1:24Speaker 1: defense more than eighty six and a half yards. I
- 1:30Speaker 1: like Aaron Rodgers to not look like he did last week.
- 1:36Speaker 1: We're gonna do less than two hundred and twenty four
- 1:39Speaker 1: and a half passing yards. And then I like the
- 1:42Speaker 1: Beast the Gods say Kwon Barkley Super Bowl rematch to
- 1:46Speaker 1: get more than a half a touchdown against the Kansas
- 1:49Speaker 1: City Chiefs. That Kansas City Chiefs defense looked really, really
- 1:52Speaker 1: shaky against the Chargers last week. That's my lineup putchers together.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Used that promo code Bootleg prize picks right now, play
- 2:00Speaker 1: five dollars and get fifty dollars in lineups. That's what
- 2:03Speaker 1: we do and support the show. Go to prize pictures
- 2:06Speaker 1: that promo Codelet get into the episode Brulet keV. Hey,
- 2:12Speaker 1: we're here with my guy, the legendary Evidence, who brought
- 2:16Speaker 1: me so many gifts we got just we got a mug,
- 2:20Speaker 1: We got Rubik's Cube. No one's ever brought me things
- 2:23Speaker 1: to do homework with my.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Kids with puzzle.
- 2:25Speaker 1: We got a puzzle.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'm really are these color they are color pencils so
- 2:30Speaker 2: we can do our kids and then come on the
- 2:35Speaker 2: color pencils with the unlearning in case I want to
- 2:38Speaker 2: pick up the pen you know, maybe get.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Some bars down, you know. But this vinyl, we got
- 2:42Speaker 1: to show everybody the vinyl.
- 2:43Speaker 2: If let's start the interview with a bang.
- 2:47Speaker 1: That these are sold out obviously right, this.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Is this is this, It's like a bundle. The OV
- 2:55Speaker 2: strip comes sign signed yep, and then everybody does OVI strips?
- 3:02Speaker 2: Which one where's the camera just straight ahead?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Straight ahead?
- 3:06Speaker 2: This one apparently we made made it to say something
- 3:09Speaker 2: along the lines of since nobody can read this, at
- 3:12Speaker 2: least to everybody.
- 3:13Speaker 1: In Japan, that's tight.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I had a great time in your country, and that's
- 3:16Speaker 2: what it's.
- 3:17Speaker 1: That's pretty much what it says.
- 3:18Speaker 2: That's pretty much what it says. That's fire y'all can
- 3:20Speaker 2: check it out. And then so that's motherfucker's lightening me
- 3:25Speaker 2: up in Japanese? Is the yeah, the translate button a lot?
- 3:30Speaker 1: Can we show this puzzle piece of vinyl thing?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah? And then so it came with there's a song
- 3:35Speaker 2: that's produced by conductor that's not on the album and
- 3:38Speaker 2: it's on a puzzle vinyl like Mayor Hawthorne had the
- 3:42Speaker 2: Heart vinyl, you know, like Bobby call will joint.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Is this a forty five or just a normal you.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Know, good question. I think it's forty five.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Probably forty five, right, Actually no, I think if it's
- 3:52Speaker 1: a forty five there'd be the bigger hole in the middle.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, So it's thirty three
- 3:56Speaker 2: probably seven. And then an instrumental amazing, which is tight
- 4:00Speaker 2: conductors having a minute. So this is like to have
- 4:03Speaker 2: like a.
- 4:04Speaker 1: He's having a definitely, you know what I mean. It's
- 4:07Speaker 1: it's funny too because he always gives you props. Uh look,
- 4:13Speaker 1: oh that's crazy.
- 4:16Speaker 2: The picture of this.
- 4:19Speaker 1: What what is the turner because you have to turn
- 4:21Speaker 1: the album in a while ahead before.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You instrumental album. We did this bundle for a hundred
- 4:30Speaker 2: bucks all that it was crazy.
- 4:33Speaker 1: It's well worth it. My thing is is when you
- 4:35Speaker 1: when you know you're gonna do something crazy like this,
- 4:37Speaker 1: like obviously you got to is it like ninety days out?
- 4:40Speaker 1: You gotta turn the album in.
- 4:42Speaker 2: That's the crazy part. Like, So with Rhyme, says, I've
- 4:44Speaker 2: been doing bigger picture right releases. I've been for everybody.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I've been producing my own albums on my own label,
- 4:52Speaker 2: but as an artist, as an MC, I've still been
- 4:54Speaker 2: signed to Rhymester with the so like learning about the
- 5:01Speaker 2: manufacturing and like you can move.
- 5:02Speaker 1: This wattle just in front of the micro how do
- 5:04Speaker 1: you want to.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Get right? Did you get there? Yeah? Oh for me
- 5:12Speaker 2: it is cook okay.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean because you have been doing the vinyl
- 5:22Speaker 1: thing on your own, so you know this is obviously
- 5:27Speaker 1: an official Evidence album, so it's a little different. Obviously
- 5:30Speaker 1: you had it like what what what leeway do you
- 5:32Speaker 1: have to give Rhyme SAARs so they can make sure
- 5:34Speaker 1: this is ready by the time the album comes out.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So I've been doing the like producing blues album for
- 5:40Speaker 2: Domo's album thank You and then stuff like that. There's
- 5:44Speaker 2: a certain time frame that I'm used to. But with Rhyme,
- 5:47Speaker 2: says it's like there's still a bigger picture of play
- 5:50Speaker 2: like they're doing they're so listening to Amba and things
- 5:55Speaker 2: like that, and so we're still doing a pre order
- 5:57Speaker 2: and it's a longer leading time and like after I've
- 5:59Speaker 2: been doing the independent thing for a minute, like getting
- 6:05Speaker 2: used to like more of the older way a little bit,
- 6:08Speaker 2: but in a dope way, like yeah, a bigger reach.
- 6:11Speaker 2: This takes a long time, Like we had to have
- 6:13Speaker 2: I mastered this album in November. Wow, so about that,
- 6:19Speaker 2: you know, And like so I started shooting mad videos
- 6:22Speaker 2: because I had nothing else. It's like there's gonna be
- 6:24Speaker 2: a long time for me to you guys.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Shot the video at the Apple Pan, my favorite burger
- 6:27Speaker 1: in La.
- 6:28Speaker 2: You know what I mean. And like all those videos
- 6:30Speaker 2: were all a little bit ago, right, and so I
- 6:32Speaker 2: just got stacked up on artillery to have when I dropped.
- 6:36Speaker 2: But yeah, it's frustrating, or you got to not have
- 6:38Speaker 2: butterfingers because people want to drop everything they got not
- 6:42Speaker 2: envy a little bit, Like moving in real time is
- 6:45Speaker 2: something that I want to get into.
- 6:47Speaker 1: More, right, because I do feel like you're I feel
- 6:51Speaker 1: like when we think of you as an artist, it
- 6:54Speaker 1: does feel very like we get gaps in between projects.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's not as as in real time as like, yo,
- 7:03Speaker 1: maybe you get in with Conductor and you have no
- 7:06Speaker 1: no with your production. I mean like, let's say you
- 7:08Speaker 1: and Conductor get in and you guys bang out eight record.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You're wrapping over his beats and you're like, what if
- 7:13Speaker 1: we just want to drop these like and then and
- 7:16Speaker 1: then the okay, well fuck, we gotta think about vinyl and.
- 7:19Speaker 2: The whole leading this hell. But then when you drop
- 7:23Speaker 2: it and it's proper.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Feels good.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It feels good when you got this, when you got everything,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and it's like and people are like, wow, look at
- 7:29Speaker 2: the attention to detail, people spending their money, which is
- 7:32Speaker 2: real for sure, and then they get a package that's
- 7:35Speaker 2: like you could tell people gave a ship. It does
- 7:39Speaker 2: go a long way. So you know, Alchemist is my
- 7:42Speaker 2: like it's the oracle, you know. And then there's rhyme
- 7:46Speaker 2: staters and between the two of them, they're like, this
- 7:51Speaker 2: is how you do it like that and this is
- 7:52Speaker 2: how you do it. You know what I'm saying.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It is interesting, Like I feel like al has kind
- 7:58Speaker 1: of changed the way a lot of people should look
- 8:01Speaker 1: at the vinyl game because he's really like kind of
- 8:05Speaker 1: he was explaining to me how he was able to
- 8:07Speaker 1: kind of figure out that direct to record plant relationship,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and you know, it's really changed his business model as
- 8:15Speaker 1: a producer for you, being able to work with guys
- 8:18Speaker 1: like Blue and like do these like side projects with
- 8:20Speaker 1: Domino and all that. Like, is that something that you
- 8:23Speaker 1: were able to pick up from al in terms of
- 8:24Speaker 1: just like figuring out and the new business model of
- 8:28Speaker 1: what it is to be evidence as either a producer
- 8:30Speaker 1: or a rapper.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah, there's been like a tremendous reinvention, and it came
- 8:35Speaker 2: subtly over a long time, So there was no like
- 8:38Speaker 2: banner that I just you know, started waving. But watching
- 8:41Speaker 2: him do that, you know, because you got to understand,
- 8:43Speaker 2: I watched all the evolution of Alchemists, So his whole
- 8:46Speaker 2: thing was like, look, figured out a bunch of shit
- 8:49Speaker 2: where things went wrong, and I'm going to help you
- 8:51Speaker 2: trim the fat on those things. And I'm gonna give
- 8:53Speaker 2: you the playbook how to save years and the mistakes
- 8:56Speaker 2: that I made, you know, and those were a lot
- 9:00Speaker 2: of things like not doing your own album through your
- 9:05Speaker 2: own label, right, taking advances and because they made my
- 9:09Speaker 2: first chemistry set through MASSI appeal BOLDI James Alcomy right right,
- 9:14Speaker 2: twenty fifteen fourteen, something like that. But that didn't ring
- 9:18Speaker 2: off like price of tea in China. It wasn't even close.
- 9:21Speaker 2: And that's because you could tell one thing is more,
- 9:25Speaker 2: because I argue the music is just as good, right right, right,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you know, And so I think when you know it's
- 9:29Speaker 2: yours and the fans know they're supporting you directly, you
- 9:33Speaker 2: don't have to do a Patreon. You can say this
- 9:36Speaker 2: is a fair exchange I'm giving you.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I'm going to give you a kind of like a
- 9:38Speaker 1: piece of art crack.
- 9:40Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, and in return you pay,
- 9:42Speaker 2: And it's like, yo, the value this is going up
- 9:45Speaker 2: after Yeah, I.
- 9:46Speaker 1: See it with the ol vinyl like you even I'm
- 9:48Speaker 1: sure your vinyl, like you could go on eBay and
- 9:51Speaker 1: like a lot of these limited edition vinyls, Like if
- 9:53Speaker 1: you're a fan one, it's dope to like support and
- 9:57Speaker 1: get something dope that you could tangible put on your shelf.
- 10:01Speaker 1: But if you're just like I want to support and
- 10:04Speaker 1: fuck I'm in a tough time. I can flip this
- 10:06Speaker 1: vine over three hundred bucks. It is what it is like.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And so the whole point was that it was like
- 10:11Speaker 2: I was like, look, this is the way I'm having success,
- 10:15Speaker 2: and I'm watching it. I'm seeing it. It's not like
- 10:17Speaker 2: he has to flass it or show me something. I
- 10:19Speaker 2: see it in real time, the just from the studio
- 10:23Speaker 2: and the people who are coming over, and you're noticing things. Okay,
- 10:25Speaker 2: there's been an upgrade going on and there's a new
- 10:28Speaker 2: fever for what's being created. So he was like, you
- 10:31Speaker 2: need to do this. So my idea was all right,
- 10:34Speaker 2: I still got a couple more on rhyme says, let
- 10:36Speaker 2: me start producing other artists under my label. I can
- 10:40Speaker 2: get the feel of what this is like, start building
- 10:42Speaker 2: with people getting mailing this, create my website, see what
- 10:45Speaker 2: my insufficiencies are, what I'm strong in, and also get
- 10:50Speaker 2: to flex my production because I produce for a lot
- 10:53Speaker 2: of people over the years, but it was always like
- 10:55Speaker 2: a track here, a track there. I did full bodies
- 10:58Speaker 2: of work, but they were always for another label. And
- 11:00Speaker 2: so this was like, Okay, now you got to show
- 11:03Speaker 2: people you're giving out your best beats. It's on your label.
- 11:06Speaker 2: You're gonna make the art, You're going to shoot the video.
- 11:09Speaker 2: You're gonna believe in the artist. It's something you want
- 11:11Speaker 2: to post on the front of your Instagram, not just
- 11:13Speaker 2: in the story, you know what I mean, Like, you're
- 11:15Speaker 2: serious about this, and then by the time I get
- 11:18Speaker 2: off rhyme sayers, I'll have a well kind of more
- 11:23Speaker 2: than making me the guinea pig.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Yeah, as opposed to you like jumping in.
- 11:27Speaker 2: From the dopest label to like what am I doing?
- 11:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean. So it's been like a
- 11:32Speaker 2: two three years, but I did eighteen releases, which is crazy.
- 11:35Speaker 1: That's dope a lot.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And there's like I was telling somebody else, it's like,
- 11:38Speaker 2: these are the people who are all the way locked in,
- 11:41Speaker 2: the people who would know the keyboard player's name from
- 11:44Speaker 2: Radiohead if they have a keyboard player. But my point is,
- 11:47Speaker 2: you know what I mean, And so losing not losing,
- 11:50Speaker 2: but like maybe losing some casual fans in the process
- 11:53Speaker 2: of really gaining some people who are all the way
- 11:56Speaker 2: dialed in.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Hey, we got to stop the interview to tell you
- 11:58Speaker 1: about our good folks. Odd socks man. Now, these are
- 12:01Speaker 1: the odd Socks basics, ladies and gentlemen. Now, when I
- 12:04Speaker 1: tell you this is a product that every single day
- 12:08Speaker 1: I'm alive. For the last five six years I have
- 12:13Speaker 1: used are these odd Socks Basics. Now, what odd Socks
- 12:15Speaker 1: is doing is they're kind of reinventing the sock game,
- 12:17Speaker 1: if we're being honest, and the underwear game. You know,
- 12:19Speaker 1: a lot of times you'll hit Walmart, you'll hit Target,
- 12:22Speaker 1: you'll get some socks, you get some draws. They're affordable,
- 12:25Speaker 1: they end up with holes in them, they don't really
- 12:27Speaker 1: feel great. Not odd Socks, ladies and gentlemen. These odd
- 12:30Speaker 1: Socks Basics are the most comfortable socks I've ever had
- 12:34Speaker 1: on my feet. Not only that, but you're super affordable.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Fourteen ninety nine for a six pack. That's it odd
- 12:42Speaker 1: socks dot Com. And if you don't believe me, sock
- 12:47Speaker 1: check full. Wait, that's the ex is on the other side.
- 12:51Speaker 1: There we go. Ah, you see that. Sorry you had
- 12:55Speaker 1: to see those white lakes. But it's so dope that
- 12:59Speaker 1: you know, I get to push a product that I
- 13:01Speaker 1: use and that I love, so odd Socks they got
- 13:04Speaker 1: the six pack of socks for fourteen ninety nine at
- 13:06Speaker 1: odd socks dot com. The basics. This is the future
- 13:09Speaker 1: of socks, the future of underwear comfort and affordability. I'm
- 13:14Speaker 1: talking about affordability without jeopardizing the quality because they are
- 13:18Speaker 1: the most comfortable socks you ever put on your feet.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Ladies and gents and the ETCeteras. Got to show love
- 13:23Speaker 1: to the ETCeteras. We like all the stripes on the flag.
- 13:26Speaker 1: There are odd socks dot com man, much love to
- 13:29Speaker 1: my brothers over there. Make sure you get some right now,
- 13:31Speaker 1: odd socks dot com. Let's get back to the interview
- 13:34Speaker 1: for people who don't know, cause I think that you know.
- 13:36Speaker 1: It's funny because I was talking with al We had
- 13:39Speaker 1: like a random three hour hang before this Alfredo two event,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and we were just just shooting the shit and he
- 13:46Speaker 1: was telling me, he was like, YO, like right now,
- 13:49Speaker 1: I don't He's like. I was like asking him, I
- 13:51Speaker 1: was like, Yo, who are the producers right now that
- 13:52Speaker 1: you feel like, are like really in their bag that already?
- 13:55Speaker 1: He's like, Yo, honestly, Ev like Ev is like unlocked
- 13:59Speaker 1: a new tea here of like being in his producer bag.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Is that something? Because I feel like you're you're like
- 14:05Speaker 1: a studio rap. This is just kind of your life
- 14:08Speaker 1: at this point. I'm like, you would just do music
- 14:10Speaker 1: for yourself that nobody else would ever hear if you
- 14:12Speaker 1: if you had to. But is that something you feel
- 14:15Speaker 1: like you've just elevated recently with maybe just the launch
- 14:19Speaker 1: of the label and like kind of realizing, like, hey,
- 14:23Speaker 1: the production side of this is how I'm gonna unlock
- 14:27Speaker 1: this business model as a guinea pig, like you said,
- 14:30Speaker 1: you know, with these other artists, you feel like the
- 14:32Speaker 1: production bag for you has gotten like just crazy recently.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I think it's evolving, like because the beats on that
- 14:40Speaker 2: Los Angeles album last year were crazy. I think it's evolving.
- 14:45Speaker 2: In photography, you don't you're not supposed to know you're
- 14:48Speaker 2: getting better. You just shoot every day and then you
- 14:50Speaker 2: look back at your photos and wow, I used to
- 14:52Speaker 2: just only shoot at the sun, you know, a sunsets only.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I had no idea. I just pointed, I can't rat
- 14:56Speaker 2: the sunset every day, right, And then you start looking
- 14:59Speaker 2: and wow, look at this. I'm focusing on people's hands
- 15:01Speaker 2: now making a series like that. And so I think
- 15:05Speaker 2: I've just become more and I've just kept doing it.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I just kept doing it. And the thing I can
- 15:11Speaker 2: always say, and a lot of people always say, is
- 15:13Speaker 2: what is always be the weakest man in the room.
- 15:16Speaker 2: You know, it's always that's a good.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Thing, great way to move.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And if you're hanging out with a what I'm hanging
- 15:21Speaker 2: out with Sam, I am and I got Budgy, and
- 15:23Speaker 2: I could think of knowledge in the room, and I
- 15:25Speaker 2: can think of Chuck strangers in the room, and I
- 15:27Speaker 2: could just start picturing everybody who's in the studio right now.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Sometimes I'm sitting in there like fuck, And so that'll make.
- 15:34Speaker 1: You still how you sharpen your sword? Man?
- 15:36Speaker 2: And then when I'm recording people, you got to imagine, Look,
- 15:39Speaker 2: I didn't I had a few years off wrap. My
- 15:41Speaker 2: last album was twenty twenty one, twenty twenty five. That's
- 15:46Speaker 2: four years.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And that's like the lifetime in hippop career roulette, right,
- 15:50Speaker 1: you know what I mean. There's people's careers are don't
- 15:52Speaker 1: last four years.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I'm done, But you got to imagine it's like in
- 15:57Speaker 2: that time I recorded some of the best rappers and
- 16:00Speaker 2: made dope ass albums with them. You don't think I'm
- 16:02Speaker 2: not sitting there being a sponge like absorbing all this shit.
- 16:06Speaker 1: And just even getting inspired on side.
- 16:09Speaker 2: And I'm sitting with Earl and Al and I'm sitting
- 16:11Speaker 2: Donald and I'm sitting with everybody who's like and they
- 16:14Speaker 2: throw me in love. So it's like, all right, many
- 16:17Speaker 2: doubts I have, it's being confirmed by the people that
- 16:20Speaker 2: I care about the most. I could throw those out
- 16:23Speaker 2: the window. Then there's other shit I gotta deal with.
- 16:25Speaker 2: But it's like there's a dope thing about wanting to
- 16:31Speaker 2: be the worst and then also being accepted, you know
- 16:34Speaker 2: what I mean. And it's like, oh, it's like redeeming,
- 16:37Speaker 2: Like you know, this is it's not light. These are
- 16:40Speaker 2: really God forbid anything happens to anybody. These are real legends,
- 16:45Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And so it's like and
- 16:47Speaker 2: so for how to say it is the highest compliment
- 16:50Speaker 2: And he would never say to me, that's the dopest
- 16:52Speaker 2: part about you guys.
- 16:53Speaker 1: For people who don't know you guys' history. You guys
- 16:55Speaker 1: have been friends that you guys are kids, right.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yeah, since it definitely.
- 16:59Speaker 1: For you real young Yeah, what was what was your guys'
- 17:02Speaker 1: like genesis of y'all's relationship? Was it school? Was it just?
- 17:05Speaker 2: It wasn't school, It was mutual friends and malls were
- 17:08Speaker 2: big at the time. People would everybody.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Would go hang on at that. I mean, my childhood.
- 17:12Speaker 1: We just Saturday. Yeah, let's go hang on at the
- 17:15Speaker 1: mall for for six hours. Yeah yeah, it hang out
- 17:19Speaker 1: at sam Goodie and listen to some albums, you know,
- 17:21Speaker 1: maybe go to game Stop, play some demos, you know.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Sh it was crazy, a little crazier than that. But
- 17:26Speaker 2: the he was just in a common circle. And then
- 17:29Speaker 2: there was an open mic. One time he said he
- 17:31Speaker 2: saw me trying to get the mic. He was intrigued
- 17:34Speaker 2: by that. And then after a while we were just
- 17:36Speaker 2: hanging out. But this has got to be fourteen, wow,
- 17:40Speaker 2: fifteen and then you know, I've told the story a
- 17:43Speaker 2: million times. But I lived in Venice next to QD three,
- 17:46Speaker 2: Quincy Jones' son, and you know he was at the
- 17:49Speaker 2: time there's no pro tools, nothing like it, and having
- 17:52Speaker 2: a studio alone was just a big deal, big fucking deal.
- 17:55Speaker 2: And so to come to my house, maybe we could
- 17:57Speaker 2: go over there smoke weed, right, and so I just
- 18:01Speaker 2: my house became the place in Venice or like for me,
- 18:05Speaker 2: I was the man, but also for the bonus of
- 18:08Speaker 2: we could probably go over to Q's house and you
- 18:10Speaker 2: got him and he's producing Ice Cuban, right, Tupacin's Yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 2: you know what I mean, and so I'm living next
- 18:15Speaker 2: to this. Even if that wasn't at the time maybe
- 18:17Speaker 2: a little later, it's still like the evolution. I met him.
- 18:21Speaker 2: He was doing the music for Fresh Prince of bel Air,
- 18:24Speaker 2: you know what I mean. He's legendary. Shit.
- 18:27Speaker 1: It's crazy too, because I feel like there was this like,
- 18:30Speaker 1: you know, I always to try to tell people when
- 18:32Speaker 1: I was a kid. So I met you when I
- 18:35Speaker 1: was so a platform tour came to Phoenix, the Neatest
- 18:38Speaker 1: Hideaway when I was probably twelve or thirteen, probably thirteen actually,
- 18:42Speaker 1: because that was two thousand, right, was that two thousand platform? Yeah,
- 18:46Speaker 1: So I was thirteen. So this is a time when
- 18:49Speaker 1: my best friend Ramses finds out that his brother is
- 18:53Speaker 1: in a rap group called Dilated People's Roka. Right, So
- 18:57Speaker 1: he had went out to LA and hung out with
- 19:00Speaker 1: his pops and Raka and at the time the Licks
- 19:03Speaker 1: were around and all this. Anyway, So the first time
- 19:07Speaker 1: I get to meet you, guys, I'm thirteen. I'm go
- 19:09Speaker 1: to this concert. That concert really changed my life because
- 19:14Speaker 1: at that time I was like, I was like, I'm
- 19:16Speaker 1: always been a hardcore hip hop but I was very
- 19:18Speaker 1: much like very into like DMX and you know, all
- 19:24Speaker 1: the commercial shit, the No Limit records and all this shit.
- 19:27Speaker 1: But when I went to this show, there was a
- 19:30Speaker 1: DJ who opened up for y'all. I think he was
- 19:32Speaker 1: from Arizona. His name was DJ Megadeth and he was
- 19:35Speaker 1: just playing shit like I never even fucking heard, and
- 19:38Speaker 1: I was like, it was like it unlocked this whole
- 19:39Speaker 1: thing as a kid for me. But fast forward, you
- 19:42Speaker 1: guys do Expansion Team and I got to come to
- 19:46Speaker 1: La with Ramses as a kid. I went to the
- 19:51Speaker 1: Fat Beats signing you guys had, which was also a
- 19:54Speaker 1: cool thing for me because I was hanging out in
- 19:56Speaker 1: the office at Fat Beats. I was like a fourteen
- 19:58Speaker 1: fifteen year old fucking raw Digg is there?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Uh?
- 20:02Speaker 1: Obviously Jay five pulls up and then you guys had
- 20:04Speaker 1: the Expansion Team released concert. I think J five was
- 20:08Speaker 1: there right.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Uh.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Anyway, this whole like you guys, I always say, dilated
- 20:13Speaker 1: people's as like a fucking as a just you guys
- 20:17Speaker 1: really changed my trajectory as a hip hop fan.
- 20:21Speaker 2: So that led you into everything else.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Yeah, bro, like really changed my life, you know. And
- 20:25Speaker 1: so I used to tag your guys's logo on every
- 20:28Speaker 1: folder I had if I still have old folders from
- 20:31Speaker 1: high school and middle school and it's I can hit
- 20:33Speaker 1: that fucking logo with my eyes closed.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Here's the thing, I'm super proud of you just walking
- 20:38Speaker 2: in here, seeing everything you've accomplished. You know, I've always
- 20:42Speaker 2: been the young one and the crew, you know, so
- 20:44Speaker 2: I know what it's like. Yeah, you know, and so
- 20:46Speaker 2: I know what that's kind of feels like, you know,
- 20:48Speaker 2: even if it's a right evolution of it. And so yeah,
- 20:50Speaker 2: just to see you do all this is crazy. We
- 20:52Speaker 2: could talk about it later, but yeah, I don't even
- 20:54Speaker 2: want to drag that. I didn't want to even drag
- 20:57Speaker 2: that element into it, just because I'm proud of thank
- 20:59Speaker 2: you everything that you're doing. I don't even look at
- 21:01Speaker 2: you as the kid that I used to know.
- 21:02Speaker 1: It's a trip. But I want to know, like because
- 21:05Speaker 1: I remember around that time, like I went and copped,
- 21:07Speaker 1: like I got the Dafari album Focused Daily from the warehouse,
- 21:11Speaker 1: and I remember you were in that motherfucker you had
- 21:14Speaker 1: long hair in the booklet and this one I'm learning
- 21:18Speaker 1: about like Liquor Crew and all this stuff, and like
- 21:21Speaker 1: kind of this just collective that you know involves kind
- 21:25Speaker 1: of everybody when we talk about you and rock and
- 21:28Speaker 1: you know X and King T and what's.
- 21:30Speaker 2: The trip is? You think me and Al are friends?
- 21:33Speaker 2: He goes to New York to college and I stay here.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Because that was ninety five when he left.
- 21:37Speaker 2: I think nine actually yeah later, And so then he's
- 21:43Speaker 2: mobbing with everybody out there, and then this is what
- 21:45Speaker 2: I'm doing out here.
- 21:46Speaker 1: You're mobbing with all the LA legends is out there
- 21:48Speaker 1: building with It was mob wild, Yeah, just wild. So
- 21:52Speaker 1: I wonder, like, at what point in time, because obviously
- 21:55Speaker 1: you're kicking it with with Al, Like where did the
- 22:00Speaker 1: idea of Dilated start? Because you guys had one of
- 22:02Speaker 1: the most successful independent singles of all time on vinyl
- 22:06Speaker 1: with Work the Angles. Yeah, at the time it was
- 22:08Speaker 1: the most successful. I'm not sure if it still is
- 22:10Speaker 1: or not, but that wasn't so it's hard to say,
- 22:12Speaker 1: but it did really good. It did really really good.
- 22:14Speaker 1: But like that record kind of kicked off you guys
- 22:17Speaker 1: getting a major deal and putting out an album and
- 22:20Speaker 1: obviously having a crazy album run. But like, what was
- 22:22Speaker 1: the beginning of you rock and Babs kind of coming together.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Alchemists and me used to go to freestyle at the
- 22:31Speaker 2: hip hop shop on the Melrose Rock. I worked there.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I met him. I had seen him before the graffiti
- 22:36Speaker 2: or graffiti. I already liked him and knew him had
- 22:39Speaker 2: somebody to talk to. And I walked in there, you know, right,
- 22:41Speaker 2: and then yeah, he probably seen us rhyman. I linked
- 22:45Speaker 2: up with him, Like I said, I live next to
- 22:48Speaker 2: QD three, and I had beats from him that maybe
- 22:50Speaker 2: my mom gave him money right for something crazy, like
- 22:53Speaker 2: something real sweet, you know what I mean.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I got you here, whatever it was, you.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Know what I mean, or whatever, And so I used
- 23:01Speaker 2: to run with that like, yo, I'm maybe I told Rocket,
- 23:05Speaker 2: you know, we could do a demo or something like
- 23:06Speaker 2: along those lines, you know, like the way Rhyme Alchemist
- 23:10Speaker 2: was already rhyming with Scott Cohn. Yep, I wasn't in
- 23:13Speaker 2: that group. I was looking for something I didn't want
- 23:15Speaker 2: to wrap by myself. Wrapping with somebody who looked like
- 23:18Speaker 2: me wasn't going to happen. There was nobody else, so
- 23:21Speaker 2: it was like, okay, well this is dope in a
- 23:22Speaker 2: different way, you know what I mean. And Rocket was
- 23:24Speaker 2: more street older. I was like, that's kind of fire.
- 23:27Speaker 2: And then so yeah, we just started working. He led
- 23:31Speaker 2: to him knowing DJ Lethal from House of Pain, which
- 23:34Speaker 2: led to doing demos there, getting a record deal, getting
- 23:38Speaker 2: an album that got shelved, and then coming back through
- 23:41Speaker 2: independence on aby ab and then meeting Baboo who worked
- 23:45Speaker 2: at Fat Beats. Everything just kind of happened. It's that
- 23:48Speaker 2: young shit of just being young and the world is
- 23:50Speaker 2: in front of you and you're not questioning and you're
- 23:52Speaker 2: just taking it all in, you know what I mean,
- 23:54Speaker 2: And so things just were moving and yeah, then that
- 23:58Speaker 2: led to making the Work the Angle song, pressing up vinyl,
- 24:01Speaker 2: selling out shows on Sunset Strip, crazy labels coming to
- 24:05Speaker 2: check it, and getting a record deal. It was it
- 24:07Speaker 2: was wild.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Work the Angles is Uh, it's one of my
- 24:10Speaker 1: favorite songs.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Of all time and not crazy.
- 24:12Speaker 1: It's like it's it somehow has not aged like when
- 24:17Speaker 1: you like, when I hear the song, it's still it.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Just you know, there's certain records from that era, especially
- 24:21Speaker 1: from like the quote unquote like backpack era of la
- 24:25Speaker 1: hip hop that like I loved growing up, and then
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'll listen to sometimes now and I'll be like, ah,
- 24:29Speaker 1: this is the work the Angles is fucking It's on
- 24:32Speaker 1: the mantle Bro.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Some of the ship has done really good because now
- 24:35Speaker 2: everything is digital, a lot of that was analog, and
- 24:38Speaker 2: the analog shit still holds up in a major way.
- 24:40Speaker 2: If it was done so you could still you could
- 24:42Speaker 2: put eighty plugins on and you can't just get what
- 24:45Speaker 2: it was like hitting tape, you know what I mean.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And so some of the older stuff it was done right,
- 24:50Speaker 2: holds up in a weird way just because of the
- 24:52Speaker 2: fact that we're all trying to emulate that so much
- 24:56Speaker 2: now through all.
- 24:56Speaker 1: The yeah, through the plugins, you're trying to emulate what
- 24:59Speaker 1: what you guys did, because that's all you had. You
- 25:02Speaker 1: already know. Man, want to give a shout out to
- 25:04Speaker 1: slap Woods for presenting the podcast only papers I smoke
- 25:08Speaker 1: man only leafs that we let fly around here on
- 25:10Speaker 1: the Blueleg Cap podcast. We just did a crazy pool
- 25:12Speaker 1: party with them too. That was insane out here in La.
- 25:15Speaker 1: So shout out to slap Woods. When I tell you,
- 25:17Speaker 1: man quality. They smoke so good. And they're called slap
- 25:22Speaker 1: Woods because they slap I know, that's like their you know,
- 25:26Speaker 1: their tagline, but it's also the truth, all right, So look,
- 25:29Speaker 1: go follow them at slap Woods. Make sure you hit
- 25:31Speaker 1: their website, and if you're at your local smoke shop,
- 25:34Speaker 1: if you're your local store and you need some papers,
- 25:38Speaker 1: get you some slap Woods. And you know, I think
- 25:41Speaker 1: pretty soon I want to do we are going to
- 25:43Speaker 1: do this. Pretty soon. I want to do a giveaway
- 25:45Speaker 1: with some Slapwood stuff, So be on the lookout for that.
- 25:48Speaker 1: We'll be announcing it on the podcast. We're gonna be
- 25:50Speaker 1: sending out obviously, you got to be of age sending
- 25:52Speaker 1: out a good box of these goodies. Oh, the sweeping
- 25:55Speaker 1: and and cilgar wraps are fire. Slap woods Man, make
- 25:58Speaker 1: sure you go show them some love. Slap Woods follow
- 26:00Speaker 1: him on Instagram at slap Woods. Let's get back to
- 26:03Speaker 1: the podcast. Okay, so the platform ends up coming, you
- 26:06Speaker 1: guys end up signing. I'm sure there was, uh, there's
- 26:08Speaker 1: there had to be some sort of bidding more for
- 26:09Speaker 1: you guys to end up with Capital.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Yeah, the bidding war happened. We went to Capitol because
- 26:15Speaker 2: they didn't have rap, and we thought if we're the
- 26:18Speaker 2: only rap, well, all the other people liked it, but
- 26:20Speaker 2: they said what you did was good, but we what
- 26:23Speaker 2: about working with such and such And at the time
- 26:25Speaker 2: we were so like in your Yeah, we were gangstar minded,
- 26:29Speaker 2: you know.
- 26:29Speaker 1: What I mean, Like, we want to do more of
- 26:31Speaker 1: this the.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Way we want it, and so Capital just didn't know
- 26:34Speaker 2: any better, and they gave us more money, so it
- 26:36Speaker 2: was the place to go.
- 26:37Speaker 1: So Platform comes out amazing body of work. I feel
- 26:40Speaker 1: like things started to really change, at least commercially for
- 26:44Speaker 1: you guys once Expansion Team drops.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Because the first album wasn't accepted commercially, but we had
- 26:52Speaker 2: such a strong fan base that we did numbers. Yeah,
- 26:55Speaker 2: so they kept us.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And it was a great album. Yeah, yeah, yeah, great
- 26:57Speaker 1: fucking album. Yeah. But Expansion Team comes and then you
- 27:02Speaker 1: guys finally kind of get I guess a taste of
- 27:05Speaker 1: what like mainstream success could look like with a record
- 27:08Speaker 1: like Worst Comes the Worst.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Which is ironic because it was such like a just
- 27:11Speaker 2: a dilated kind of record.
- 27:12Speaker 1: It was super dilated.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Yeah, guru, do it like a little there's no exactly
- 27:17Speaker 2: like the way Eric sermon, just like music we had
- 27:19Speaker 2: when Worst Come to Worst, My people come first, just
- 27:21Speaker 2: to refrain constantly coming back. The song is a minute
- 27:25Speaker 2: in fifty seconds. Capitol said that couldn't work, so we
- 27:29Speaker 2: added the instrumental at the end for like two minutes.
- 27:32Speaker 2: If you've ever noticed, it's a short song on the
- 27:34Speaker 2: vinyl and then the beat just runs from Matt. That's
- 27:37Speaker 2: how we defeated like that. Once they saw it longer,
- 27:40Speaker 2: they said, cool, we didn't do anything different. But the
- 27:43Speaker 2: craziest thing is that really worked to our favor because
- 27:47Speaker 2: they would play our song on Power one of six,
- 27:51Speaker 2: let's say, but not because they wanted to, because it
- 27:53Speaker 2: was working in the format or what is tested or whatever.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Testing it was working, you know, not researching.
- 27:59Speaker 2: It was researching, not because the DJs at the station
- 28:01Speaker 2: were excited that it was researching, right, but it was
- 28:04Speaker 2: and the Capitol had some money behind it, I'm sure,
- 28:06Speaker 2: so they were playing it. So they'd always played at
- 28:08Speaker 2: the end of their segment. What was dope is we
- 28:11Speaker 2: had that long instrumental running at the end, so they
- 28:14Speaker 2: would use that as the gap to talk about whatever
- 28:17Speaker 2: the fuck they were talking and get the next DJ
- 28:20Speaker 2: on and so our beat would just be running for
- 28:22Speaker 2: like five minutes as like an ad and it really
- 28:25Speaker 2: just it propelled the song at radio for some reason,
- 28:28Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And that one just worked out.
- 28:30Speaker 2: And I would say that second album is the most
- 28:33Speaker 2: pure Dilated ever was at the moment because it was
- 28:37Speaker 2: really our first album, the album that came out previous
- 28:40Speaker 2: we had made, previous to having a deal, right, this
- 28:43Speaker 2: was kind of a time made an album, you know
- 28:45Speaker 2: what I mean, on a label, you know what I mean?
- 28:47Speaker 1: And so yeah, because it's almost like if you think
- 28:49Speaker 1: of like worth the Angles Work the Anglesers recorded as
- 28:50Speaker 1: like a single and then it ended up in a
- 28:52Speaker 1: you know, and you guys actually platform.
- 28:53Speaker 2: It was just a collection of songs.
- 28:55Speaker 1: A lot of stuff that was released independently prior to that.
- 28:58Speaker 1: So The Expansion Team, to me is one of my
- 29:00Speaker 1: favorite albums ever. And I think of like even just
- 29:03Speaker 1: like the moments where like fill the Agony gets an
- 29:04Speaker 1: interlude and Tafari gets an interlude, and like you guys
- 29:09Speaker 1: have like I feel like like even live on Stage
- 29:14Speaker 1: ends up being like a in Step brother It ends
- 29:18Speaker 1: up being like of yeah, video game song too.
- 29:21Speaker 2: It was in the movie. It's still in the movie
- 29:24Speaker 2: NBA Street, NBA Street all that shit, but it's in
- 29:27Speaker 2: the movie Step Brothers when they're on their job and auditions.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Right, But it's like crazy that like just why we call.
- 29:32Speaker 2: It it's step Brothers, Me and Alchemists, Ah.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I see that, but yeah, that was such a you know,
- 29:39Speaker 1: important album just for me personally, man, because that to me,
- 29:42Speaker 1: like you said, like that album to me is like
- 29:44Speaker 1: a classic. I think it's your guys' best album, and
- 29:47Speaker 1: I feel like it kind of changed everything. And then
- 29:50Speaker 1: Neighborhood Watch comes troublesome time, so Neighborhood Watch happens, and.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Then that's like the labels in the mix now, So
- 29:58Speaker 2: now the labels like your get a little taste because
- 30:01Speaker 2: we almost went gold with this. Last one did really good. Yeah,
- 30:04Speaker 2: I'm assuming probably the Worst comes to Worst, but that
- 30:08Speaker 2: at the time, it was like so there made a
- 30:11Speaker 2: silver plaque in Europe or whatever something, you know, it
- 30:13Speaker 2: was like a big deal.
- 30:15Speaker 1: I remember the Worst Comes Worst video. I remember like,
- 30:16Speaker 1: oh shit, man, these underground dudes got a BMW. This
- 30:19Speaker 1: one got an X five dog.
- 30:21Speaker 2: First day it came out, you know. But that so
- 30:24Speaker 2: it was like, yeah, I was in my little thing
- 30:25Speaker 2: right there. I don't have any jewelry. I don't do
- 30:28Speaker 2: none of that. I always just want a nice car
- 30:30Speaker 2: and a good microphone and that's my that's my jewelry.
- 30:32Speaker 2: But all to say was like once that happened, Black
- 30:37Speaker 2: Eyed peas were blowing up and got bright ideas.
- 30:40Speaker 1: J five's doing well too, Like so, I feel like
- 30:43Speaker 1: J five had some Like I remember J five would
- 30:45Speaker 1: always be on like MTV at least like Yeah.
- 30:47Speaker 2: They had a crack Interscope was really good.
- 30:48Speaker 1: You guys had that word of mouth tour that was amazing.
- 30:52Speaker 2: I mean, the whole thing was dope. And then at
- 30:54Speaker 2: that point it got a little cloudy. I think ambitious
- 30:56Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 30:56Speaker 1: But I love Neighborhood.
- 30:57Speaker 2: WI Good songs great, a great record with the with
- 31:00Speaker 2: the Kanye song attached to it.
- 31:02Speaker 1: I love Neighborhood. Watch Marathon is like one of my
- 31:04Speaker 1: favorite fights.
- 31:05Speaker 2: No good. I just mean the Kanye single being like
- 31:07Speaker 2: so was that was representing the whole album that really
- 31:09Speaker 2: didn't represent that song.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I would say, would you say, like was it was
- 31:14Speaker 1: this way like a label play?
- 31:17Speaker 2: It was a label play and then but that was
- 31:20Speaker 2: cool because it was like working with Kanye West really
- 31:23Speaker 2: wasn't different than working with any under underground beat maker.
- 31:26Speaker 2: To me at the time, at that time, he was
- 31:28Speaker 2: making soul samples, breakbeats attached to him.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I didn't see the what's coming I'm saying, But back
- 31:36Speaker 1: then I feel like it's obviously a different time. You
- 31:38Speaker 1: guys obviously went on tour with him too and.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Later, but when they're proposing Scott Storch or Kanye West
- 31:42Speaker 2: as ideas Kanye West felt like, oh, that's the guy
- 31:45Speaker 2: who made truth for Beanie Seagull, right, that's a dope loop.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I would have looped that, you know what I mean,
- 31:49Speaker 2: Like it was more natural, like guy like minded, you
- 31:52Speaker 2: know what I mean? With the East Coast sound, it
- 31:54Speaker 2: was it wasn't that crazy to me as an idea.
- 31:57Speaker 1: This way was one of them joints that like again
- 31:59Speaker 1: it it like you said, I'm like, oh shit, like this,
- 32:02Speaker 1: it's really fucking happening, Like you turn on BT, this
- 32:05Speaker 1: way is on the video was crazy.
- 32:08Speaker 2: You never felt right, It never felt all the way right.
- 32:11Speaker 2: But a lot of the moments were genuine and like
- 32:15Speaker 2: me getting to produce on college dropout and then going
- 32:18Speaker 2: on tour with him, he was really he looked out
- 32:21Speaker 2: for us in a major way and he did his
- 32:24Speaker 2: best to make us feel comfortable in his ascension like
- 32:27Speaker 2: he he was there for that. So I gave him
- 32:30Speaker 2: a lot.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Of was was that era? Because I feel like I
- 32:37Speaker 1: feel like like you said, because you. You was a
- 32:40Speaker 1: last call college drop out that you were able to
- 32:42Speaker 1: help produce or co producer or whatever.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I produced that ship.
- 32:45Speaker 1: You produced the record.
- 32:46Speaker 2: And then he and then the sample got denied and
- 32:48Speaker 2: then he took it away. Was that I didn't know
- 32:52Speaker 2: after that. He just amazed me with what he did.
- 32:54Speaker 2: He deserves the production?
- 32:55Speaker 1: Was that something you guys worked on in the this way?
- 33:00Speaker 2: Right then? Right then, same exact time. So jay Z
- 33:04Speaker 2: was doing the Blackout? Yeah, and I had to beat
- 33:06Speaker 2: mister Rockefeller bet Middler's sample and say can you get
- 33:09Speaker 2: it to him? And he wanted it?
- 33:11Speaker 1: And wow, So you guys were did you guys cut
- 33:16Speaker 1: this way in the studio with Kanye?
- 33:18Speaker 2: Yes?
- 33:18Speaker 1: So that was like a how was that session?
- 33:21Speaker 2: Pretty good? There's two days? Was there the whole time?
- 33:25Speaker 1: Wow?
- 33:26Speaker 2: Legend was there the whole time. These aren't artists who
- 33:30Speaker 2: are big yet, so it's it's not weird. I'm picking
- 33:33Speaker 2: them up in my car, you know what I mean.
- 33:34Speaker 2: So it's just like another day if I pop in
- 33:39Speaker 2: there and some up and coming kids, you know what
- 33:41Speaker 2: I mean. And so really, I mean, it was obvious
- 33:44Speaker 2: what was happening, and it was obvious that I remember,
- 33:49Speaker 2: But you know, he was also Rockefeller, so it wasn't
- 33:51Speaker 2: like he was nobody. He produced fucking.
- 33:54Speaker 1: The college dropout there.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Correct, and look at him as an artist was what
- 33:58Speaker 2: I wasn't doing. I was still looking him and him
- 34:00Speaker 2: like buck wow or look at him like that, you
- 34:03Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, or just blaze or somebody just
- 34:06Speaker 2: dope on the production side.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Yeah, because I think around that time he probably only
- 34:11Speaker 1: really had like through the Wire circulating on the mixtape scene,
- 34:15Speaker 1: and then he was on the Twister record.
- 34:18Speaker 2: No that came. He was showing us the video for
- 34:22Speaker 2: the Wire, like the raw edit.
- 34:24Speaker 1: That's fucking wild.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Ueah.
- 34:26Speaker 1: So you guys go on this tour and this was
- 34:28Speaker 1: another cool LA trip of my childhood. I came out
- 34:31Speaker 1: here and I saw you guys at the House of
- 34:33Speaker 1: Blues open for you a. But this was also doubled
- 34:36Speaker 1: as like because your guys at LA date. Yes, yeah,
- 34:40Speaker 1: because Neighborhood Watch dropped around that same time, and it
- 34:43Speaker 1: was wild because you guys performed and like everybody in
- 34:48Speaker 1: their mom came out during this show. From what I remember,
- 34:50Speaker 1: I think Exhibit came out. I feel like dub C
- 34:55Speaker 1: came out, maybe not during your set but I just
- 34:58Speaker 1: remember being at the House of Blues on Sunset and
- 35:01Speaker 1: being like, Yo, this is like I've never seen so
- 35:04Speaker 1: many famous motherfuckers perform in one night, like Kanye. I
- 35:08Speaker 1: think Kanye was. Were the young Guns on that tour? Yep,
- 35:11Speaker 1: young guns were on that tour. That was a crazy tour.
- 35:15Speaker 1: I still have pictures from that tour. I think at
- 35:19Speaker 1: that time, I was probably like sixteen, So I just
- 35:23Speaker 1: remember I have a picture with Kanye West at the
- 35:25Speaker 1: Marquee Theater in Phoenix. Picture with you guys, I got
- 35:29Speaker 1: my blue Neighborhood Watch Echo shirt on. But yeah, like
- 35:35Speaker 1: you said, it was almost like that was like the
- 35:37Speaker 1: first tour. Really that was a college dropout tour, right, Okay,
- 35:41Speaker 1: it's like the genesis of like you know, obviously.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Consequence was on tour.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Really though, JLC, the hip hop vian Lenis Chick, John
- 35:51Speaker 1: Legend was just I remember because.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Fucking who's the dude getting everybody cuts? Who's like famous,
- 35:56Speaker 2: super famous barber dude.
- 35:58Speaker 1: It was wild, was like the the tour life, like
- 36:02Speaker 1: because you guys are these la guys. Obviously you guys
- 36:04Speaker 1: are kind of at this point like your own thing.
- 36:07Speaker 1: But like the I feel like that college dropout era.
- 36:11Speaker 1: It was. It was kind of like a It.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Was different that Dilated has a wide variety of an audience.
- 36:19Speaker 2: That was I remember performing it being a predominantly black audience,
- 36:22Speaker 2: you know what I mean, and be like, Okay, yeah,
- 36:24Speaker 2: this is current, you know what I'm saying. This isn't
- 36:27Speaker 2: like white people clinging on to a past era type shit,
- 36:30Speaker 2: you know what I mean, This is like happening right
- 36:32Speaker 2: now with tour Little Brother, they have like an audience
- 36:37Speaker 2: like that as well, which tour which is always amazing, amazing,
- 36:41Speaker 2: But yeah, so it was dope. To me. It felt
- 36:44Speaker 2: a little different than when we're just doing like our
- 36:46Speaker 2: backpack thing, you know what I mean.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Right, it was like almost like yay, was he kind
- 36:51Speaker 1: of took the backpack spirit and put it into this
- 36:55Speaker 1: commercial package that I don't think we had seen in
- 36:57Speaker 1: a long time.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Never happened before.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I like, first of all the polos talking about
- 37:03Speaker 1: like like but just being proud of high lip quality,
- 37:06Speaker 1: proud of most death, like championing, I'm gonna go to
- 37:10Speaker 1: the top and I'm going to champion the people that
- 37:13Speaker 1: we that should be champion, you.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Know what I mean. That was his edge to me
- 37:16Speaker 2: was always like like he probably you know, he said
- 37:19Speaker 2: it in his rhyme some way, but you know, putting
- 37:20Speaker 2: like this person with that person right, you know, and
- 37:23Speaker 2: not being afraid to do it was bold and it
- 37:26Speaker 2: showed solidarity. Another strong thing from Al that you know,
- 37:31Speaker 2: I was talking to somebody. Yeah, it's like, yo, he's
- 37:34Speaker 2: still showing me as much love as he did, no
- 37:37Speaker 2: matter what's happening, you know what I mean. And it's
- 37:40Speaker 2: like that says a lot.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's I think too, with the you know,
- 37:43Speaker 1: the certain uh level of hip hop that I kind
- 37:48Speaker 1: of came up listening to and the community that obviously
- 37:51Speaker 1: is here in LA that is from that era, I
- 37:53Speaker 1: think it's important that everybody sticks together more than it
- 37:57Speaker 1: like like you know, like I feel like I was
- 37:59Speaker 1: a perfect example of somebody who, like, no matter how
- 38:02Speaker 1: big of a placement he gets, he got, meet the
- 38:04Speaker 1: Grams or whatever, like, Al's still gonna do records with
- 38:07Speaker 1: who he who he came up like, which is what
- 38:10Speaker 1: he likes or what he likes. Like even I was
- 38:12Speaker 1: floating ideas to Al, I was like, yeah, it'd be
- 38:14Speaker 1: crazy if you did an album and so and son.
- 38:15Speaker 1: He's like, I mean, yeah, that's a cool name, but like,
- 38:19Speaker 1: I don't know if i'd want to do it type
- 38:21Speaker 1: ship and that and that and then what great? What
- 38:23Speaker 1: about restraint?
- 38:24Speaker 2: Right? You know? That's I mean, you do ship? You know,
- 38:27Speaker 2: maybe there's somebody like.
- 38:28Speaker 1: To me, him and Larry June doing their ship was
- 38:30Speaker 1: like the most natural shit ever and it came in.
- 38:31Speaker 1: By the way, you're on that project, which fucking the
- 38:34Speaker 1: first one. But shout out to al Man. He's He's
- 38:37Speaker 1: definitely two of the top four albums of the year
- 38:42Speaker 1: in my book so far. So shout out to al
- 38:45Speaker 1: I want to give a shout out to our family
- 38:46Speaker 1: at Broken Man Broken. Uh listen, I love these vapes.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Broken Cannabis. Make sure you go shoot him a follow.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I was in Austin, Texas, and you know, I was
- 38:59Speaker 1: off the Broken in Texas, even though I'm not sure
- 39:01Speaker 1: legally I was supposed to be off the Broken in Texas.
- 39:03Speaker 1: But look, you gotta go follow them right now. Go
- 39:05Speaker 1: to Rokencannabis dot com, shoot them a follow on social media.
- 39:08Speaker 1: You'll see it down below. They got the solventless rosin pure.
- 39:13Speaker 1: It will melt you in a good way. By the way,
- 39:15Speaker 1: all right, so make sure you go shoot them a
- 39:17Speaker 1: follow man. And you know we only rock with the
- 39:19Speaker 1: premium the best. And when I tell you, broken is
- 39:22Speaker 1: the best. They've been doing this for so long, and
- 39:26Speaker 1: uh man, the rosin, the solventless Rosin. Man, it hits
- 39:30Speaker 1: all right. So they got the disposables, they got the carts.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Let's just open one of these up, just so y'all
- 39:36Speaker 1: can see. These carts are beautiful. All right, we got
- 39:40Speaker 1: it open he fast forwarded. All right, So this the
- 39:43Speaker 1: cart and then obviously you got your disposable right here.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Both of these incredible. Follow them and check them out.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Rokencannabis dot com. Can you take me to your So?
- 39:53Speaker 1: Wait is the Weatherman OLP?
- 39:55Speaker 2: Right? Is that right?
- 39:56Speaker 1: Seven oh seven?
- 39:57Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 39:57Speaker 1: So seven the Weatherman LP comes out? And it feels
- 40:00Speaker 1: like there's kind of like, you know, I feel like
- 40:05Speaker 1: you as a as an MC, I feel like when
- 40:08Speaker 1: like the with the early Dilated people, shit, you could
- 40:10Speaker 1: always kind of tell like, well, ev is like the
- 40:12Speaker 1: guy who can produce and rap, but rock is like
- 40:15Speaker 1: the guy who could rap rap, you know. But it
- 40:18Speaker 1: felt like every new album that Dilated would drop, your
- 40:21Speaker 1: bars would get sharper, you would get better right, and
- 40:24Speaker 1: then I feel like the Weatherman LP comes out and man,
- 40:29Speaker 1: I mean it's it's front to back, just an incredible
- 40:32Speaker 1: body of work and you know, personal classic to me,
- 40:37Speaker 1: do you feel like when you were working on that,
- 40:39Speaker 1: did you feel like you had any sort of like
- 40:40Speaker 1: chip on your shoulder or like something to prove?
- 40:42Speaker 2: Totally did not not in a beef sense, no, no,
- 40:46Speaker 2: but of.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Course, but just like a solo album from evidence and
- 40:49Speaker 1: you know.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I mean, I was in a group with two great people,
- 40:52Speaker 2: so at a show, you got to imagine the confusion.
- 40:54Speaker 2: It's like, who's here to see what? You know? What
- 40:56Speaker 2: I mean? Though I never had the defining moment of
- 40:58Speaker 2: really in the first however, many years of my career
- 41:02Speaker 2: knowing exactly why things were the way they were, so
- 41:05Speaker 2: making a solo record would be the chance to find
- 41:08Speaker 2: that out. I'm young, I'm probably twenty eight or nine,
- 41:11Speaker 2: right around there, in a real confident time, you know
- 41:13Speaker 2: what I mean, and I felt like, this is the
- 41:16Speaker 2: time I'm going to do that. My mom had passed
- 41:20Speaker 2: on the college dropout tour, so I left that so
- 41:22Speaker 2: that tour is beautiful and the worst thing ever, you know,
- 41:24Speaker 2: And then right around then I was trying to figure
- 41:26Speaker 2: out how do I say something personal within a dilated record.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And when I was making a sequence, I had a
- 41:33Speaker 2: song and I tried to put it with dilated stuff,
- 41:35Speaker 2: with a bunch of anthemic or political or freestyle type shit,
- 41:39Speaker 2: and it felt like, why is this just jumping out?
- 41:42Speaker 2: So that was one of the main reasons to do
- 41:45Speaker 2: a solo record was to pay homage to my mom
- 41:49Speaker 2: straight up. And then I started to get into the
- 41:53Speaker 2: idea of it, and I started to realize that songwriting
- 41:59Speaker 2: and producing is something that I truly love and that's
- 42:02Speaker 2: what makes a great album. There's a lot of barready
- 42:05Speaker 2: rappers who have made projects that didn't hold up over
- 42:10Speaker 2: a long period time.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like you're you know.
- 42:13Speaker 2: So I was like, oh, I could I know how
- 42:14Speaker 2: to make records? Like, like, even if it was my
- 42:17Speaker 2: delusional mind, I really felt like that kind of how
- 42:20Speaker 2: to pick beats and how to say the right thing,
- 42:23Speaker 2: and I have a reason to make it, and so yeah,
- 42:25Speaker 2: that's just what happened.
- 42:26Speaker 1: I couldn't imagine like Chase the Clouds Away being on
- 42:28Speaker 1: a dilated album.
- 42:30Speaker 2: My point, It could It could? It could because Rocca
- 42:33Speaker 2: would say, helly you put that on the album. That's
- 42:35Speaker 2: why it could you know what I'm saying, because there
- 42:38Speaker 2: was no not like RockA never gave me no, no
- 42:40Speaker 2: for sure, but he was the biggest one, like stop
- 42:43Speaker 2: doing freestyle records, do something about something. All his ship
- 42:47Speaker 2: is overly conceptual, right, you know what I mean?
- 42:49Speaker 1: It would do like a proper, proper gand on.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Political record or this or that. So no, if anything
- 42:53Speaker 2: he encouraged it, it wouldn't be that, it would just
- 42:55Speaker 2: be my production filter going this doesn't work. And so yeah,
- 43:00Speaker 2: me in a group setting is one evidence, and me
- 43:03Speaker 2: and by myself is more Michael than it is.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Do you feel like you know? Because I feel like
- 43:10Speaker 1: between the Weatherman coming out and then fast forward a
- 43:14Speaker 1: few years you put out Cats and Dogs Layover, Cats
- 43:17Speaker 1: and Dogs Layover. Yeah, I forgot Layover and.
- 43:19Speaker 2: And I did the Beatles album. I did a bunch
- 43:20Speaker 2: of shit for like immediate fans. They were getting fed
- 43:23Speaker 2: right around then.
- 43:23Speaker 1: So you have this like insane momentum as evidence that
- 43:29Speaker 1: rivals whatever. I feel like, you know, dilate his momentum
- 43:33Speaker 1: was it?
- 43:34Speaker 2: I could never rival that because that was major, you
- 43:37Speaker 2: know what I mean.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Capital, But but I remember dude, like going to your
- 43:39Speaker 1: show like at this time, no, they had a moment.
- 43:42Speaker 1: I remember going to like seeing you in Vegas at
- 43:44Speaker 1: the hard Rock and you're fucking selling out in Vegas
- 43:46Speaker 1: and like you you had like you know, you had
- 43:49Speaker 1: a lot of just I feel like there was a
- 43:53Speaker 1: like you. I feel like for a while there a
- 43:56Speaker 1: lot of like your fingerprints were on a lot of
- 43:59Speaker 1: like some blog error raption that started a part that
- 44:02Speaker 1: people wouldn't even like maybe even give you credit for.
- 44:04Speaker 1: But like, do you feel because because you are naturally
- 44:08Speaker 1: an introvert and I know that you've gone through a
- 44:11Speaker 1: lot on the personal side of your life that you
- 44:14Speaker 1: know a lot of people you know, I don't want
- 44:17Speaker 1: to get into the specifics, but you've been through a lot.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Do you feel like you purposefully kind of like relaxed
- 44:26Speaker 1: on I guess like because I feel like there was
- 44:31Speaker 1: like a point in time where it felt like you
- 44:33Speaker 1: just kind of like just were like, yo, I got
- 44:35Speaker 1: to take a break from this shit, Like I'm a
- 44:36Speaker 1: step back from from from being quote unquote evidence.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Was that something that I mean in like the amount
- 44:42Speaker 2: of work I was putting out.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like just I feel like just like
- 44:46Speaker 1: the amount of work and just like you know, I
- 44:48Speaker 1: feel like obviously man, you know you like I said,
- 44:52Speaker 1: I feel like cats and Dogs drops. And then after
- 44:55Speaker 1: Catting Dogs, what was the next thing?
- 44:56Speaker 2: Whether or not that was my biggest solo record. That's
- 44:59Speaker 2: crazy that strow all the way and that's all those
- 45:01Speaker 2: two eighteen or ninety.
- 45:03Speaker 1: But that's a big gap.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Huge but step brothers in between, a Dilated record in between.
- 45:10Speaker 2: You know, like you can always trace me, I have,
- 45:13Speaker 2: I said on a new album. Every time I disappeared
- 45:15Speaker 2: through production, you know what I mean, it's like you
- 45:17Speaker 2: could find me. I'm somewhere written somewhere.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Do you feel like though? Like did you? Because because
- 45:22Speaker 1: I say this about my shit is like I purposely.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Well, I've never had dreams of having a solo career,
- 45:28Speaker 2: by the way, but start let's start with that. How
- 45:30Speaker 2: I was at an in store in Philadelphia with Little
- 45:34Speaker 2: Brother and Dilated People's and Little Brother and we were
- 45:37Speaker 2: signing right next to t LA and we were signing
- 45:40Speaker 2: records and somebody came to Big Poo and said, gave
- 45:44Speaker 2: him a project called Sleepers.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Great album.
- 45:46Speaker 2: I didn't know what the fuck that meant.
- 45:48Speaker 1: You're like, wait, Big Poo's got a solo album.
- 45:50Speaker 2: And what is this? And the guy every other person
- 45:52Speaker 2: who went up to him and signed Little Brother shit,
- 45:55Speaker 2: they was like, yo, you're the man. And then as
- 45:56Speaker 2: soon as the guy came with Sleepers, he started talking
- 45:58Speaker 2: to him forever about it. I was like, well, what
- 46:01Speaker 2: the fuck is this? You know what I mean? And
- 46:03Speaker 2: and he's like, I got a solo record. I want
- 46:06Speaker 2: a solo you know what I mean. It was like
- 46:08Speaker 2: I didn't see much past that. There was no big
- 46:10Speaker 2: play here. It was just that that moment on how
- 46:13Speaker 2: passionate the solo record was. Versu the way people were
- 46:17Speaker 2: looking at him when he was signing autographs for his group.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I was like, there's a direct connection with that.
- 46:22Speaker 1: When you look back at I mean, because this new album, man,
- 46:25Speaker 1: I feel like this new album is incredible. It's it's
- 46:27Speaker 1: one of the best albums of the year. The production
- 46:30Speaker 1: is insane. I feel like, when you think of your
- 46:35Speaker 1: solo discography, where would you if you were to take
- 46:38Speaker 1: because I feel like, you know you could put it
- 46:40Speaker 1: put this album up there, But I mean if you
- 46:42Speaker 1: were to take the new album out of where would
- 46:44Speaker 1: you rank your solo discography? Like what in your opinion,
- 46:46Speaker 1: what's your best album?
- 46:50Speaker 2: How things play out over time is fucked up. So
- 46:52Speaker 2: it's like, but I could tell you how I felt
- 46:55Speaker 2: when I made him right, but how age determines is
- 46:58Speaker 2: kind of so yeah, But well, I'll say that The
- 47:03Speaker 2: Weatherman was dope to me because I made sixteen songs,
- 47:07Speaker 2: and sixteen songs are on the.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Album sixteen for sixteen.
- 47:09Speaker 2: There was no miss there was no asking if they
- 47:13Speaker 2: all had a reason, and they all the order presented itself.
- 47:17Speaker 2: I had a lot of great Alchemist production on that show,
- 47:20Speaker 2: for sure. I had him rapping twice, a lot of
- 47:23Speaker 2: people just getting hip to al rapping. But it's like
- 47:27Speaker 2: I've been hollered at y'all about this man. Stop, you
- 47:31Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. So it's like I was, now,
- 47:34Speaker 2: now you you guys, figure that shit out. Now. I
- 47:36Speaker 2: already did the Mountaintop, my favorite rapper, my favorite producer,
- 47:40Speaker 2: my favorite art. Yeah, for sure, I did all that.
- 47:43Speaker 2: So it's like, but yeah, and so that was great
- 47:45Speaker 2: because the confidence and this is no second guessing. I
- 47:48Speaker 2: flew to New York and mastered it Tom Coin, who
- 47:51Speaker 2: passed away with legendary mastering engineer just all the way
- 47:54Speaker 2: Victory Layover was the second one. That one was the
- 47:58Speaker 2: same thing again really in my bag. They were short
- 48:01Speaker 2: nine songs. I guess that's an album nowadays. At that time,
- 48:04Speaker 2: anything under ten was EPP that I was. It was
- 48:09Speaker 2: on Jason Goldwatch's label, which was Dcon which is now massive.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Remember, and the.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Reason we did that is because he said I'll shoot
- 48:16Speaker 2: a lot of videos. So I was early on the
- 48:18Speaker 2: video thing.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Yeah, had like eight videos for an album with nine
- 48:22Speaker 2: songs or seven videos and.
- 48:23Speaker 1: You're a lot of your video What was that? That
- 48:25Speaker 1: that other platform that wasn't YouTube back then that people
- 48:28Speaker 1: were during the blogger will put their videos on that
- 48:30Speaker 1: was like four K or h D.
- 48:32Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Start start with a v vimeo, vemo, vimeo that ship
- 48:36Speaker 1: still No, it's not is it?
- 48:37Speaker 2: Vimeo? Vemo Venmo?
- 48:43Speaker 1: But Cats and Dogs comes out.
- 48:44Speaker 2: So then that's my first rhyme says, so that's all
- 48:47Speaker 2: the buzz. Then I signed with them because I had
- 48:49Speaker 2: been seeing what Atmosphere was doing touring and it intrigued
- 48:52Speaker 2: the ship out of me, and their social media presence
- 48:55Speaker 2: early on MySpace and Instagram preaked me out because nobody
- 48:58Speaker 2: was that organized like I want to be with them, right,
- 49:01Speaker 2: they are organized, They're not in New York, they're not.
- 49:04Speaker 1: In LA They're in Minneapolis.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Yeah, they're just different, you know what I mean. I
- 49:07Speaker 2: was like I could and they there's nothing like me
- 49:09Speaker 2: over there. Sure nobody's doing my style ship, you know
- 49:11Speaker 2: what I mean? And so then did that and then
- 49:13Speaker 2: that led me to current. So Rhyme series has been
- 49:17Speaker 2: huge in my solo career.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember you the I was in I remember
- 49:23Speaker 1: when you and Brother Ali toured nine probably yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 49:28Speaker 1: because that was like and I feel like that was
- 49:30Speaker 1: because that was before Cats and Dogs, But I feel
- 49:32Speaker 1: like that probably was the lead into it, leading you
- 49:35Speaker 1: probably had already worked out that deal and they're like
- 49:37Speaker 1: I was on the road with Brother Ali and.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Exactly they were doing something like that and the Yeah,
- 49:43Speaker 2: what a dope. That was like a reset button for me.
- 49:45Speaker 2: It change my attitude. His guys perform on carpets, they
- 49:48Speaker 2: have in ears. They're not rapping at other rappers and
- 49:52Speaker 2: other beat makers in the crowd. They're rapping at people
- 49:55Speaker 2: who don't make music, just humans, you know what I mean.
- 49:58Speaker 2: It was like, oh this is it wasn't as B boy,
- 50:01Speaker 2: is what I was used to. Even though they are
- 50:03Speaker 2: in the purest sense, it just had a Midwest twist on.
- 50:06Speaker 1: It for sure. Hey, we gotta wrap up this interview
- 50:08Speaker 1: another one presented by Hardan. Baby, you already know what
- 50:11Speaker 1: it is. Shout out to Hardeen for presenting another episode
- 50:14Speaker 1: of the Bootleg Cab podcast. Don't forget when you're in Vegas,

- 50:26Speaker 1: ever ask for, and then they break down all what
- 50:28Speaker 1: all the terps mean. It's incredible. Go to Hardan Underscore
- 50:31Speaker 1: Las Vegas. Shoot them a follow and when you're in
- 50:33Speaker 1: Las Vegas and make sure you shoot them a visit. Hey,
- 50:35Speaker 1: don't forget to go to bootleg keV dot com. You know,
- 50:38Speaker 1: we had to celebrate the two year anniversary of the
- 50:39Speaker 1: most viral interview of all time. Throw the shirt up
- 50:41Speaker 1: so you could see it. I turned it down. Shout
- 50:43Speaker 1: out to that boy Big Boogie, a big college in Jacksonville,
- 50:47Speaker 1: and we just threw these on sale half off for
- 50:50Speaker 1: the five hundred episode t Bootleg keV dot Com. Go
- 50:53Speaker 1: get you a shirt. Let's get back to the interview.
- 50:55Speaker 1: If you had to put together your personal mount rushmore
- 50:59Speaker 1: of production production, and you can't use Al because he's
- 51:03Speaker 1: one of your best friends. So let's take Alchemists and.
- 51:05Speaker 2: We should have put him in there.
- 51:06Speaker 1: No, No, he's he he's not because it's not undebated.
- 51:09Speaker 2: If he's in there or not.
- 51:10Speaker 1: He built the mountain.
- 51:11Speaker 2: We know he's there. You mean, there's so many people
- 51:13Speaker 2: before him. He's built. What I'm saying, he's about your
- 51:15Speaker 2: personal mountain. You guys have been friends that you were fourteeneh.
- 51:17Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean, that doesn't mean.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Okay, it's implied.
- 51:20Speaker 2: I have a lot of friends who rap who ain't
- 51:22Speaker 2: gonna make my top ten list.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Okay, but let's say four people who aren't the Alchemist.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Why four? Because top five? So how about with al
- 51:31Speaker 2: would be six?
- 51:32Speaker 1: Okay?
- 51:34Speaker 2: Five? This sucks. This sucks. What's your favorite movie?
- 51:40Speaker 1: Big Lebowski?
- 51:41Speaker 2: Really, it's definitive It's better than Godfather to definitively, The
- 51:44Speaker 2: Big Lebowski is my favorite movie. Better than Coming to America.
- 51:48Speaker 1: I think it is better than Coming to America.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Doctor dre Well DJ Premiere.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Primo Doctor dre.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Pete Rock oh yeah, and Large Professor okay, and then
- 52:12Speaker 2: it would right, here's where it gets wild m M
- 52:17Speaker 2: because this is a wild play. But notice mine all
- 52:20Speaker 2: from an era. And then this gets debatable. Okay, but
- 52:28Speaker 2: it it's either Marley Mall okay, or it's Kanye.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Respected. That's a great list.
- 52:51Speaker 2: And I feel like, because if you're going to go
- 52:52Speaker 2: back to what inspired premiere, you know what I'm saying.
- 52:56Speaker 2: And then if it's what inspired the whole next generation
- 52:59Speaker 2: of production, it's Kanye, either Pharrell or it's one of
- 53:01Speaker 2: them two and then Alchemists, of course it's different.
- 53:08Speaker 1: I respect the list. Would you guys do another.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Who got missed? Who is the ones?
- 53:12Speaker 1: Maybe mad Lib not enough?
- 53:15Speaker 2: Maybe Game not enough? Songs that changed life?
- 53:19Speaker 1: You said, Primo, maybe the Rizza?
- 53:22Speaker 2: Oh yeah, there is? So then there's the Then he
- 53:25Speaker 2: might be the best of and it's crazy because he
- 53:28Speaker 2: might be the best of all time, but he the
- 53:31Speaker 2: only armor? What is it? What is the thing in
- 53:33Speaker 2: the armor that the only thing about him that is
- 53:37Speaker 2: just not a wide catalog of records outside of.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Te I also feel like he kind of stopped.
- 53:44Speaker 2: Like and then that and then the then the that as.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Well, right, yeaheah, And that that's kind of how I
- 53:49Speaker 1: feel about like when I think of like.
- 53:51Speaker 2: Dilah and then and then JA because I think like,
- 53:54Speaker 2: I think Dila is up there and then Q two.
- 53:59Speaker 1: But when I think of like, I think it's crazy
- 54:01Speaker 1: because I just had this conversation about just being able
- 54:04Speaker 1: to survive eras with the output and there's really not
- 54:10Speaker 1: that many people. And when you start thinking of it
- 54:12Speaker 1: in that sense, Ow's in that combo all time because.
- 54:18Speaker 2: He's done something that no one else has done.
- 54:20Speaker 1: There's I'm about reinventing that over and over and over
- 54:24Speaker 1: that and being relevant over and over and over for such.
- 54:28Speaker 2: A long time.
- 54:29Speaker 1: Not just crazy.
- 54:31Speaker 2: But see I was arguing with somebody who's of a
- 54:35Speaker 2: higher statue. You know, I don't want to throw him
- 54:37Speaker 2: out there, but he was. We were arguing about rap
- 54:40Speaker 2: and he said this rapper is the greatest of all time,
- 54:42Speaker 2: and I said, shit, what about this guy who in
- 54:46Speaker 2: my mind is out wrapping that guy? And he goes, dude,
- 54:50Speaker 2: ain't change the generation for sure. So he's what he
- 54:53Speaker 2: was telling me was, yeah, he got maybe there's more syllables.
- 54:57Speaker 1: He could maybe like bar out more. Yeah, but the
- 55:00Speaker 1: influence He didn't, you know that conversation all the time
- 55:02Speaker 1: because I'm a big Black thought guy.
- 55:03Speaker 2: Oh you're doing this, don't do that.
- 55:05Speaker 1: No, No, I'm a huge Black thought guy. But it's like,
- 55:08Speaker 1: even like a Loop A fiasco. I think Loop A
- 55:11Speaker 1: fiasco bar for bar when he wants to, like rap
- 55:14Speaker 1: could probably out wrap the planet. Now, with that being said,
- 55:18Speaker 1: you couldn't put Loop A above nas or jay Z
- 55:22Speaker 1: or even though like if you know, if if you
- 55:25Speaker 1: sent each one of those guys into a room and
- 55:26Speaker 1: they had to come up with like thirty two bars,
- 55:28Speaker 1: Like maybe Loop A has the best thirty two bars.
- 55:30Speaker 1: But when you're talking about the totality of influence of culture,
- 55:33Speaker 1: longevity of relevancy, that's just something that when you have
- 55:37Speaker 1: those conversations you can't ignore.
- 55:39Speaker 2: There's some shit I watched on some platform the other day.
- 55:43Speaker 2: It was a big platform and they were interviewing some
- 55:45Speaker 2: guy who I didn't know who he was, but it
- 55:47Speaker 2: had some the platform had so many members that decided
- 55:52Speaker 2: to watch it. And he was interviewing some guy who
- 55:54Speaker 2: ran Capital Records in UK okay whatever it is. But
- 55:58Speaker 2: this guy apparently signed big artists and at a time
- 56:02Speaker 2: where everything was tanking right, he was going like this,
- 56:05Speaker 2: and he just said, it's three things that I look for,
- 56:08Speaker 2: I think, he said, in an order that decide whether
- 56:12Speaker 2: this is going to work or not. And everyone, all
- 56:15Speaker 2: his stockholders and all the people in the room are
- 56:18Speaker 2: trying to guess, you know, the people who write the checks, like,
- 56:20Speaker 2: trying to figure out why this guy's working right, and
- 56:22Speaker 2: they all say, they said, we're like, they said, uh, talent,
- 56:28Speaker 2: He said, yeah, that's number two or three, and then
- 56:32Speaker 2: they said work ethic and they said number two, and
- 56:35Speaker 2: then nobody could get one for a long time, and
- 56:37Speaker 2: he just gave up, and he said, likability. I signed
- 56:40Speaker 2: somebody if they're likable or that's it. And he said,
- 56:43Speaker 2: if you base it on talent or work ethic, well
- 56:46Speaker 2: there's a lot of those. But he's like, if nobody
- 56:49Speaker 2: likes you, the doesn't matter. He said, we're in a
- 56:50Speaker 2: music business.
- 56:51Speaker 1: We're not just keywords business that.
- 56:54Speaker 2: And so it's like, as nice as people are, they
- 56:56Speaker 2: got to realize that in the music business, maybe they're
- 56:59Speaker 2: not as dope as they thought they were, right, but
- 57:02Speaker 2: like in every other sense they are for sure, you
- 57:04Speaker 2: know what I mean. And so that's I think that's
- 57:06Speaker 2: why sometimes person singing behind sting, it's probably a better
- 57:11Speaker 2: singer than sting, but they're not sting, you know what
- 57:13Speaker 2: I'm saying, And so they're sitting behind him going, I'm
- 57:16Speaker 2: singing that's so much better than you. Let's keep it real,
- 57:19Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 57:19Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 57:20Speaker 2: So it's like, but things work out for different ways.
- 57:23Speaker 2: And I think he even said, yeah, put Madonna in
- 57:25Speaker 2: a singing contest, is what he says.
- 57:26Speaker 1: You obviously, I always wondered this, to go back to
- 57:29Speaker 1: worst comes the worst for a second, How did like
- 57:30Speaker 1: like the Guru part of that song? By the way,
- 57:32Speaker 1: shout to Guru?
- 57:34Speaker 2: Alchemists just you know, that might be one.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Of our's like early like big like radio records.
- 57:40Speaker 2: He made that happen, is what I'm saying.
- 57:42Speaker 1: Oh, he made the Guru thing happen.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Premiere and Alchelmist made it happen Premiere mixed that record.
- 57:46Speaker 2: People don't even realize it. Him and Eddie, Wow, you know,
- 57:49Speaker 2: it's just we had a space. We asked, Guru, can
- 57:51Speaker 2: you put something there? We thought maybe a chorus would
- 57:53Speaker 2: come in. It came out as back as a rhythmic
- 57:56Speaker 2: shout out it was. It was a dope shout out
- 57:58Speaker 2: and it worked, you know what I mean, And it
- 58:00Speaker 2: just like I was so honored, you know. So that's
- 58:02Speaker 2: just like a that's just a magical wishless time and
- 58:07Speaker 2: things are happening, you know, with the best of the
- 58:09Speaker 2: best mind you I got to work be in the studio.
- 58:12Speaker 2: I brought me in to hang out with Premiere and
- 58:14Speaker 2: NASA's lifetime. Sometimes you get to meet artists when they're
- 58:19Speaker 2: at a different point of their career.
- 58:21Speaker 1: That's a crazy point though, just.
- 58:22Speaker 2: To be around some of these people at you know,
- 58:25Speaker 2: it's like when I was hanging out with well certain,
- 58:29Speaker 2: you know, with the alcoholics or it's certain. It's like
- 58:31Speaker 2: that at the exhibit, I'm looking at the pivotal moment
- 58:34Speaker 2: when it's all happening. It's not that it's not just
- 58:36Speaker 2: as great now, but you just got to remind yourself,
- 58:39Speaker 2: like pre gray hair motherfuckers who are like in their bag,
- 58:43Speaker 2: you know what I mean. It's like I.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Would say, like lately, I've been trying to because I
- 58:47Speaker 1: live so much in like cool moments that I don't
- 58:50Speaker 1: realize how cool they are. And you've probably been in
- 58:53Speaker 1: a lot of these situations where you're like you got
- 58:56Speaker 1: to kind of sometimes just be like, yeah, I've been
- 58:59Speaker 1: trying to do because I've been able to interview recently
- 59:02Speaker 1: like Snoop and like, uh, just people I grew up
- 59:04Speaker 1: like idolizing and it's not a big deal to me anymore,
- 59:07Speaker 1: but recently I had to be like damn, Like like
- 59:11Speaker 1: I just interviewed ghost Face Killer, which is like, you
- 59:14Speaker 1: know wild, he's like my fifth favorite MC of all time.
- 59:17Speaker 2: All the people too, when they come see you, they're
- 59:19Speaker 2: like happy to see you and they know you, and
- 59:21Speaker 2: it that's not like you're just like a like a chure.
- 59:24Speaker 1: And it's even just like even like being like an
- 59:26Speaker 1: instrumental part of the interview side of the blog era
- 59:29Speaker 1: like at that time and I'm interviewing Kendrick and j Cole,
- 59:31Speaker 1: like I don't realize, like this is like a crazy
- 59:34Speaker 1: weird renaissance and like hip hop.
- 59:36Speaker 2: And now we break for Viagrad.
- 59:41Speaker 1: But no, no, I feel like for you, like you
- 59:43Speaker 1: had to have been in so many of those moments
- 59:45Speaker 1: where you're like, Damn, I'm hanging out during the Liquid
- 59:49Speaker 1: Crew era of West Coast hip hop or I'm hanging
- 59:51Speaker 1: out around like and you're a part of this.
- 59:54Speaker 2: You gotta understand who is like when you're I see
- 59:57Speaker 2: it now with my kid and other people. It's like
- 59:59Speaker 2: when when you're young and hanging out with older people,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: you're not your best self. You're tripping over your shoes,
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: you're stuttering, your mouth is dry, you're not you're on
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: your p's and q's, trying to impress people. And then
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: then you go hang out with your homies and you're
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: the man for sure, and then they see you over there,
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: They're like, that's not even the same guy who's hanging
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: out with us, you know what I'm saying. So it's
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: like being young, we got to experience a lot of
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: like those like crazy like I don't know what the
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: fuck I'm doing here and I don't even know if
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: I should speak type moments, you know what I mean.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: And now it's become grown into it.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: Well, now you're going to look back and be like
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: you never get over that shit.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: You shouldn't, especially you know I hang out with be real,
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: it still fucks me up. I'm not evidence around Breel
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: round premiere. I'm a mess. Yeah, he looks at me
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: funny because it's like he don't even know who I
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: am because I'm still You're just like it's like Dwight
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: goodin DJ premiere, Haleyo Grace, you know what I mean.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: It's like this wall of legend shit, the homie, which
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: is I don't I don't know how to get over it?
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Do you? And I don't want?
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: You shouldn't. That's what That's kind of my point, like
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you shouldn't get over it, because that's what kind of
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: got you here, right when I think of like, you know,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: sometimes like we have these West Coast hip hop conversations
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: and like the I guess, the the I would say,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: the boom back underground side of that conversation always gets
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: ignored when we think about like what West Coast hip
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: hop rats are and all that? Did you guys ever,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: because there was definitely a crazy movement coming out of
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: LA between yourself, J five, you know, visionaries, living legends,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: fucking we can go on and on and on, but
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: it was very much different than what the commercial audience
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: had perceived West Coast music to sound like to be.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: What was it, like, I guess making music like that
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: in LA and being a part of that like kind
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: of backpack renaissance but not really necessarily kind of sounded
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: like what the general public had assume was LA hip
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: hop was supposed to sound like.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: It was a weird time. It was a lot of
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: like where are you guys from?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Type ship Even the platform, we weren't on the subway like.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: The LA subway. Right. We were trying to show people,
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: you know what I mean, But yeah, we weren't on
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: the cover. It was all our music was super East
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Coast inspired. But when I was growing up, I thought
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: EPMD was from the West Coast, true, you know, because
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: they had they were wrapping a more bounces.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: They were here so cool.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: I like that, you know. I would say Fat Beats
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: was just a tremendous force in all of this. You
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: said music, plus there was warehouse, it was Tower Records.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Beats in LA was crazy.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: I'm saying. Previous to that, that's where I used to
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: go to the mainstream places to buy O GC or right,
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: Black Movie. Right. I didn't know then thefar I put
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: me up on game on there's a store. He started
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: naming off Rascal and Ship that I never heard about him.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: What the fuck is Rascal? He's like, oh, they got
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: that up there, and I'm like, what is it? And
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I'm finding these twelve inches Most Deaf, Miss Fat Booty,
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: LP Funk Crusher, Company Flow Wild, I'm seeing all these records.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: I couldn't even it was like none of this was
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: that music. Plus that was and a lot of it
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: was East Coast.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: It kind of like opens you up to a whole
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: new world of like independent ship that you didn't even
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: know existed totally.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: So it showed me that like you can like East
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Coast shit and make East Coast sound in music or
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: premiere DJ, premiere minded beats and have a store on
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: the West Coast that's gonna slang this shit fire no Internet,
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: you know what I mean, prior to the Internet.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's like who was the first I guess
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: laog when we think of like West Coast hip hop
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: that like maybe is on like the more traditional sonically
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: West Coast side that really embraced you guys.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: Was it was?
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: It? Obviously probably be real I'm assuming, right, tough.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Well lethal house of paints, so yeah, soul Assassins, a
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: lot of alcoholic.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Crew, the Licks, Yeah, kan T.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: I didn't know k T really right, but yeah, but
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: we were always kind of like like.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Did you guys ever get on like Snooper Dre's radar back.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: I mean you can watch this in the Calis Active video.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: It's way later though, but cali is Active is later.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: I mean, like you know ninety nine, two thousand thousand,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: two thousand and two, Like, did you like get like
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: did you ever find out like yo, oh shit, Dre
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: knows who we are?
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: No, it was finding out that Pete Rock played our
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: ship on fucking the radio right right, right, right right.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: I knew that like that side had embraced you guys.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I just didn't know if there was like, yo, fucking
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: DJ Quick is slapping our ship. This is crazy? Or
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: you know, cause I feel like.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: No, I don't think I don't think so. I think
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: it was more like, no.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: What Cali's active?
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Be real for sure, be real, show love it's unquestionable.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: Yeah, shout out to be real. Last Dilated album was
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: uh Is eleven years ago. Director of photography. Yeah, are
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: we ever going to get another one?
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Do you want one? Of course you want one.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: I wouldn't mind one.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: You wouldn't mind one.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: I would fucking think about it. Well, when I've seen
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: you guys perform live like three times in the last
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: twelve months and every time you guys perform live, I'm like, fuck, I.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Just did a song for Rocket we put out of
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: forty five and my forty five I saw that fire
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: called conflicts and contradictions, conflict and contracts.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Would would you guys? Have you guys talked?
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: You guys have done some live shows together. Recently they're
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: been doing live shows. There's been a little demand for it.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: I'm not big on like living off the past ship,
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: but I don't feel like dilated is When we get on.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Stage, it feels very current.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: It was just yeah, it doesn't. I feel like we
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: give it are all still there's it's not mailed in never.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: I mean, you guys are all each too. Like I
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: just feel like, you know it wouldn't.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: I don't think there's a need for a new record
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: right now if we just started making music. But we
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: live far different lives, so I don't know.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: He has very far apart.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: I don't know how that. I don't know what sparks
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: it off, you know what, maybe even a single maybe,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: but I don't. I don't hate the idea of it.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: I love the well that's that's what I like to hear.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: It's like when I just saw Baboo. I was like,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Baboo duck season, Dog, Like, can we do another duck season?
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: Like what are we doing?
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Maybe I'm yeah, maybe maybe. I like the may I
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: love rock, I love Babs and they're still sharp as fuck.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: So I mean, it's it's if it wasn't overhyped and
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: if it was just like out the way and like,
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: this is the thing I didn't know I needed today?
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Is that the tweet or whatever that makes sense this
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: album I didn't know I needed on a Friday. Maybe
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: something like that.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: You uh helped with Conductor because I was interviewing Conductor
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: and we had talked about how instrumental you were and
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: kind of helping him, uh network and kind of get
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: in front of some of the Grisel all this stuff.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Explain to me kind of your guys, because he's got
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: a crazy I mean, obviously you showed the vinyl that
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: that's that's not on the album, but the record that
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: is on the album with Blue. It's probably my favorite
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: beat on the album, to be honest, but it is crazy.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Explain your guys' relationship because Conductor is on a crazy run.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: He's obviously producing for Drake, He's producing for I mean
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: he's he's killing it right now.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: He's having his moment right now for sure, and I
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: hope that continues to the I met him at a
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: show man. I just met him at a Yeah, with
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: the atmosphere, he wanted to come into the show. I
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: got him in. I was aware to some capacity of
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: what he was doing and no idea. Really I knew
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: he was nice, kept in touch, super he just felt sincere.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: I enjoyed hanging out with him that day. He had
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: a lot, a lot of good things to say. Started
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: peeping his Instagram and it was like, oh, this isn't
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: this is fire, right, you know, And it's like, it's
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: hard to gauge fire when there's two likes because everything
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: is such like a driven.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Even if you don't think it matters to you, it does,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: it does, it does? He's subconscious at this point you have.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: To ask yourself, why isn't anybody else Maybe I'm bugging
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: and so yea. It was just early on this thing,
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: but I kept enjoying what he was doing to the
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: point where I was like, I think trying it got
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: some beats. I don't know if it worked out, but
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: now we're talking and then yes, I think terminology. My
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: man Urn was doing an album with with horns. He
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: had an album where he was doing all album with
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: every all horn loops something like that.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: It conco sounds about right because Sermonology is sucking a
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: million albums.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Yeah, He's like, at this point, I'm going to do that.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: And so I was watching a conductor ig he had
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: a beat with a horn plant tag him and they took off,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: and then probably somewhere in there it led to Griselda
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: or something else. I didn't do nothing for conductor. He
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: did everything for himself. I just liked what he was doing,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: but from a genuine place, not for sure, you know,
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: because it's it's uh yeah, when things get shiny, it's
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: so much easier to like him. I believed in what
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: he did earlier. Yeah, it's not a surprise. I've seen
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: so many people do well of growing up around will
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: in a mid and red food that is kind of
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: all and everybody. I've seen everybody do their things, So
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: it's not a surprise when I believe in somebody and
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: other people do as well.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: How many unreleased? Uh ever, you guys cooking up the
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: new Step Brothers album, is there? Al don't want to.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: Say cryptic to me, imagine that and to the internet.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: It feels like he's wanting this to happen. Another thing
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: happens twenty fourteen, that's he you know, I think he did.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: He has gangreen, he'd been dropping those. I think he
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: got a couple done, so I think that's probably something
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: he wanted to do for a minute, and then I
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: would hope this would be something like that. I think,
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: here's the thing. I've tried to jump this and started,
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: but he wraps on his own beats, So me sending
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: him my beats ain't going to start this project. It's
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: just not So when he's ready is when it will happen.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: But I think, like we have a song called rain
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: every season on on on Learning volume two, one.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: Of my favorite also has a puzzle and color pencils
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: and composition book and.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but I wake up in my email and I
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: have a beat and a verse done. So it was like,
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: that's that's going to get done, you know what I mean.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: I could just do my part and then and then
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: it's going to be on the album.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: So when he wakes up in that mentality and has
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: me in mind is when that will happen. But I
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: don't think it's too far away. I don't think it's
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: too far away. Who could be bullshitting and it's mastered already.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: I think it probably is. It could be who's somebody
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: that you would love to produce an album for that
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: you haven't worked with yet.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: I've been thinking about this. Here's what I learned. The
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: ideas of what you have are not what reality is.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: And so it would have to be somebody At this
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: point in my life. It's like you're dating within your
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: tax bracket. It's got to be somebody you don't want
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: to you don't overkick your coverage. No, it's got to
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: be somebody who likes to drive to my driveway.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Hey jay Z, Like, yeah, of course he.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Wants to use my bathroom at my house, you know
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: what I'm saying. And somebody use my forks that I
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: wash in my sink. That's who I need to work
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: with right now. And of that list I have as
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: at the top of that one, you know, I don't know.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: I don't know who wants to come over.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: I feel like you and Larry would be crazy. You
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: guys obviously have some DoPT.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: You have two songs that I've sent him beats. He's
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: actually sent me back like is this available? You know
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: what I mean? So you never know, but things like that,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: as a producer, you know very well once somebody says
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: that it's sixty forty maybe anything, you know. So, But
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: I would love to work with Larry, But in all fairness,
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: I got put up on Larry around Alchemist's time of
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: that record. So I would need to produce something that
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: I have a full range of their whole.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Career, right like you kind of need to tap in
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: and like.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Something that I well, Like doing Blue was really something.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: That Blue album was something that was high on my list,
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: believe it or not. Like I might have answered this,
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: He's one of my favorites, but I don't know somebody
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: who would trust me. I've worked with Gunn. I've done
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: two with him already. I would like to work with
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I would like to work with Earl Sweashert. Who wouldn't
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: want to work with you know? That would be I
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: think he'd come over and I think he.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: Would at ryest he came out with al.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, ask Earl if he would use my fork.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: Earl would be done or it would be dope, I
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: would say. On the up and coming side. I think
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Coyote would be dope. The two brothers Coyote, they got
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: a whole project with statics selected coming.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: I feel like Coyote, I'm learning about them through ber Reu,
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: two guys I already know.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: Yeah, they're super super talented.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: If they want to come over, then we're talking.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: But they'd come over maybe.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: But that's the thing. I really feel like I got
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: to be producing people who I could be there.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: With that is that kind of like for you?
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: I have the sony with you're saying that the I
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: have that, and I have the Noyman and I have
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: the man leaves and I have the thing, which I mean,
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: I want to shape the whole sound. I have my booth,
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: I have my mix engineer, I have my master and
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: I want to for you.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Is that create a sound like you're not just if
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you're gonna do that, we gotta be in my Like
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: it's almost like like you're coming over and we're doing
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: this where I.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: Could go to their place, right, But I really just
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: don't want to have like a mailing.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: No the email back and forth is I would do
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: it if.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: It was the right artist, of course, course, you know
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: what I'm saying, but right now, though the people like
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: that would be the game.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: Right was wanted produce Oh for the game game, that'd
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: be dope games. I feel like a lot of people
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: don't give him.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: Seen I'll beat me to that. That's not going to happen.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: I mean, I didn't have a chance, but that would
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: have been a wishless thing. You know, It's just like
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: who you got to find somebody who knows that I've
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: been that I have a flank in forty five that's fire.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: I got to find somebody who knows that, who's like
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: all the way in tune. I don't want to solicit, right,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Do you you know what's I was just having this
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: conversation with somebody. I feel like it'd be dope if
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know if Fante just doesn't like
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: oh No, we.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Talked, but but if about a forty five we talked
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: about doing one, I would love you and oh no
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: on my label production for him.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: That'd be crazy.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: I would be crazy.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Last Little Brother shows are coming up of all time.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: And the joints the Little Brother did a conductor of
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: fire Dude.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: I would love for Fonte to just put out more
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: music and like the group obviously, but well listen v man,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: Uh the project is out, people can go support it.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: It is Uh. These vinyls that you showed off are
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: currently sold out.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: But this is this is a bundle that sold out
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: with all the stuff that came together.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Oh got it. So the bundle sold out, but there.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: Is instrumental album still available, almost done, getting close and
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: then black finel all day?
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: Did you you know? I was? I want to ask
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: this question because I just was talking. Did you guys
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: ever have any run into MF Doom?
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: I got to so lucky. I got to produce a
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: song for Doom, not with his a cappella flowing on
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: top of it. He wrapped on and beat for side
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: rock dope MC on rhyme stick. Yeah, she's ill and
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: so homosize the producer. He produces all her ship. They
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: let me have one or two joints on the album.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: I was outside producer and I got lucky enough the
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: Doom got on one of those joints.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: Also crazy. How did you end up on the reanimation
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: Lincoln Park project?
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: I think that was just a time when Lincoln Park
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: was looking to do a remix album with hip hop beats,
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: so AMP Live is on their Alchemist is on there.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: I'm on there. There's a lot of people on there.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Like a lot of people don't like uh, you know Mike,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: you noticed like a fucking l a backpack baby, and.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: He could rap good. The the I got lucky because
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: I had a song called High Voltage, which was so
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: it was a remix album. So yeah, animation because everyone
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: remixed Lincoln Park song. I got lucky and got a
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: song called High Voltage, which was the only song that
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: wasn't remixed. It was just a song that had.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Never been heard. Wow.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: They performed live or some ship. And then we got
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Pharaoh Manch on it super Dope, which was one of
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: my other heroes. Pharaoh Manch would be somebody else. I
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: think he would come over.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: What was your You guys had so many iconic tours.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Think about the Little Brother Tour, the Kanye Tour, the
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Scratch Tour was sick, the Word of Mouth tour was crazy.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: What's your favorite tour you've ever done as a as
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: you could be as a member of the group, solo artist,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: what's your favorite tour?
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Yeah, the I didn't like touring, Let's start with that.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: So favorite and tour that's like jumbo shrimp. You know
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: what I'm saying, wasn't I wanted to be making beats
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: at home producing shit. Once I look back on it, okay,
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: was amazing, you know what I mean. So sometimes you're
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: not in the moment, right, you know what I mean?
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: But yeah, the first tour dilated in Jurassic five was
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: stupid because we had a shitty tour bus. The three
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: rap groups and DJ's all one on the bus. People
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: like sleeping in any available space like a jail cell,
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Like ripping the curtains down.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I remember wrapping them.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: Up as a blanket. No, like the most wild ship.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: I think I played you in Tony Hawk on the
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: bus for that tour. He was a child and I
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: beat you. Yeah, sounds about right.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: The theory that was too crazy because I'm just too young,
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: you know what I mean. But later I think there
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: was a European Rhyme Saies tour that was dope, twenty
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: eleven meter in atmosphere and brother, I really enjoyed that.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: That's second, that's a big tour.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: It was dope. Yeah, tour buses and ship Is.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: There anything because I feel like we don't get enough.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: With Rage against the Machine. I got to tour with
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: them on their last tour, Dilated people's Gangstar. Think about that?
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: The fuck?
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: What year is that?
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: Two thousand the Battle of Los Angeles tour?
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Holy shit, I didn't even.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: That's legendary shit, you know.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: I mean, Gang Star, Dilated, Rage against the Machine fucking
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: crazy and.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Raged against the Machine were such gangsters for bringing out.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Those that's wild. Shout out to zach Man Zach's is
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: a dope dog.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they were breaking up right on tour, you know
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: what I mean, we're there, it's shit crazy? What is uh?
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: I feel like Slug and Uh, I guess just kind
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: of the when I think of maybe underappreciated or under
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: talked about, like guys who've like kind of done legendary
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: shit changed the game. I feel like Slug atmosphere and
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: rhyme Sayers is in that conversation because I do feel
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: like like when you think about like Slug was getting
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: like radio play, like on alternative rock radio and like
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: but like making boom back like dusty rap shit, Like, uh,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: what is something that you've kind of learned from being
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: so close to those guys, because I do feel like
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: they're underappreciated, under celebrated, and they are. You know, they
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: are fucking goats in their own right, you know.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I said before, Dilated was like it just
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: I learned everything I didn't learn from Dilated, I learned
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: from them. So the recorded music of rhyme Sayers wasn't
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: part of my upbringing as far as like catalog. I
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: knew Scapegoat, I knew joints, you know what I mean,
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: But I wasn't the audio of what they did. I
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: was listening to Mob Deep, you know what I mean?
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: For sure they had very much like their own like
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: corner of their Yeah.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: So I wasn't immersed. I was immersed. I knew the
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: radiance of the success.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you knew that they were doing well, but.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: I didn't know the nuance of it all. And when
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: I got there, it was real jarring to me because
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: I always thought, like, before you come out on the show,
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: you're backstage with a mic going already already, right, get ready?
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: You know. I didn't, and then the beat drops and
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: you walk out and you fucking bouncing and the crowds
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: going crazy. I never knew like the idea of like
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: the mic on the mic stand and walking out slowly
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: on top of a carpet and taking the mic off
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: the stands saying what up to the people, putting the
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: mic away and comfortable for a second, and then dropping
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: some shit right like they they just had a more
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: rock and roll approach to the hip hop. Still pure
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: as fuck. It's still a rapper in a DJ, of course,
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: but their approach to it was like, like I said,
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: the in ears, no hype man, no one doubling every
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: other word, like no faking an encore, like walking off
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: unnecessarily to make the crowd, so you can walk back
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: on and be the man, right, Like just a lot
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: of dumb shit that was the most important little shit.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: Not funny, you know, like like I feel like that,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Like how you said like you were listening to Mob
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: Deep but you knew the scope. It's almost like how
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: I used to be that way with like Strange Music
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: and Tech nine, where I'd be like, yeah, I know,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: like they're selling out every time they come to town.
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: But then when I like went to the show and
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: got involved in it, and I was like, oh shit, yeah,
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: this shit is It's crazy that there's just this other
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: pocket of the game, the hip hop culture that like,
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: is it whatever we're fucking into initially?
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: You know, I feel like Atmosphere is like a perfect
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: example of that. It's like Atmosphere was like you're either
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: it's either for you or it's not. But you can't
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: deny how the impact and the success, you know what
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: I mean.
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: So shout out to them.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: Shout out to them. So are you officially after this
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: album everything's on your own label?
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: Well that's the idea. Yeah, move it there. It's a bittersweet,
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: you know, because in an industry where everybody hates the
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: label I don't. I love rhyme saies, you know, and
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: so they've done a lot of good for me outside
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: of music as well, like just on some human shit.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: So I don't want to end it. I think that
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: it'll be on a one off basis, like hey, not
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: contractually bound, like yo, let's do on that.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Hey, let's do one.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Let's do one, you know what I mean, or maybe
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: four or whatever, you know what I mean, that kind
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: of thing.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: But you want to be able to be like, hey,
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: I want to drop an evidence out um on my ship.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's all the card ship.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: I respect that one hundred percent. Man. Look, go get
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: the album. The album is incredible. Unlearning Volume two. Proud
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: of you, Bro, Proud of you, man, I.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: Mean you're right that fuck that all see that bullshit.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Come on man, yeah, go get the album, Go get
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: the puzzle.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: I'm gonna smoke weed.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: We're gonna smoke some weed. Evidence So he has a son,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: h
