- 0:29Speaker 1: nor where you stand with on X. In addition to
- 0:35Speaker 1: a bunch of normal people they're sitting around here, we
- 0:38Speaker 1: have from Phelps game calls Jason Phelps and Dirt during
- 0:41Speaker 1: I'm here to join us, and we have like a
- 0:43Speaker 1: we're making all kinds of siting, exciting, not siting exciting
- 0:48Speaker 1: announcements and a little bit here, So stay tuned for
- 0:51Speaker 1: that part. But first we got to take care of
- 0:52Speaker 1: the other stuff. Um then we're gonna get into these two.
- 0:56Speaker 1: But how's it going, guys, Good, fantastic? All right, don't
- 1:00Speaker 1: go anywhere, And if we talk about something that you
- 1:03Speaker 1: feel like you're qualified to speak about or not, jump in.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We're gonna cover off on a bunch of junks. Then
- 1:11Speaker 1: we'll get to you. This is the first installment of
- 1:14Speaker 1: a recurring segment and the segments called we need to
- 1:17Speaker 1: jingle for it. It's called um Chester gets rich off Bitcoin. Now, Chester,
- 1:23Speaker 1: this is really a story about walife. I'm gonna putting
- 1:25Speaker 1: like a slot machine down there. Yeah, it's cashing out coins.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Can you build a little something? Yeah, I think it's
- 1:30Speaker 1: a slot machine. And then something to signify a Walleye boat. Okay,
- 1:34Speaker 1: so if you could hear an engine, you know, like
- 1:36Speaker 1: a outboard, and you kind of got the colt pissing
- 1:41Speaker 1: out and messing by through through the headphones like left
- 1:43Speaker 1: to right, him hauling asked by, and then a sound
- 1:46Speaker 1: of like cascading money out of slot machine. They'll introduce
- 1:50Speaker 1: Chester gets rich off Bitcoin, The Continuing Adventures of Chester
- 1:54Speaker 1: the investor. Come that's it, come off. Chester once a
- 2:05Speaker 1: Walleye bolt, real bad. And so he sent how much
- 2:08Speaker 1: money off to bitcoin right now? About four grand? No?
- 2:13Speaker 1: Initially initially like a hundred bucks. Yeah, and that was
- 2:17Speaker 1: with him one weekend, and what shot up to like
- 2:18Speaker 1: five dollars and I called you a liar, you know,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I called you something. I think, Yeah, your hundred bucks
- 2:25Speaker 1: turned into four hundred bucks. This is I'm not giving
- 2:28Speaker 1: investment advice here. I still think he's I still think
- 2:31Speaker 1: he's gonna get screwed in the end. But no way.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And over the weekend he made like a lot of money. Yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: I mean, um, over over this week this last weekend.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I'm going back, going back still to when when when
- 2:47Speaker 1: we all caught COVID over you've already had it. But yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 1: over the weekend, I probably made I don't know, like
- 2:54Speaker 1: over three hundred bucks. And you didn't believe me. And
- 2:57Speaker 1: you know I believed you, but I didn't. I was
- 2:59Speaker 1: still ignorant. I'm still way ignorant. I was even more
- 3:02Speaker 1: ignorant then about cryptocurrencies. And I said, I bet you
- 3:06Speaker 1: can't get it back. I don't know why I said that. Yeah,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and I you know that my favorite quote, tell me, honey, um,
- 3:15Speaker 1: the skeptical skepticism is the chastity of the intellect. So
- 3:20Speaker 1: I was skeptical and the chest was raking all this money,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and I was super jealous, and I said, I want
- 3:27Speaker 1: to see that money bounce back into your bank account.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And then what happened. I took it out and it
- 3:33Speaker 1: went in my bank account. And while it was sitting
- 3:36Speaker 1: I think I lost ten blocks on the bat two,
- 3:38Speaker 1: didn't I? Yeah, you said, you give me ten bucks
- 3:40Speaker 1: to put it back and see if I got it right, Um,
- 3:43Speaker 1: while I was sitting in my bank account, I definitely
- 3:46Speaker 1: lost some money by sitting dormant, by sitting even though
- 3:49Speaker 1: they give you like point o interest on that stuff. Yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 1: but I got it back in there, and uh, I
- 3:58Speaker 1: want me to bitcoin right now? Is in a pretty
- 4:01Speaker 1: new stage. Would you rather get You can do it
- 4:03Speaker 1: one of two ways. I give you twenty and you
- 4:05Speaker 1: owe me ten. I give you seven and I owe
- 4:09Speaker 1: you three. Give me seven. Then when I get that
- 4:14Speaker 1: Walleye boat, you just pay for gas. Okay. So so
- 4:18Speaker 1: you took it out in order to prove that it
- 4:20Speaker 1: wasn't that you hadn't. I thought you got scammed on
- 4:22Speaker 1: a weird website. No, I thought. I was like, oh,
- 4:28Speaker 1: we just heard of a guy selling AMMO. He said, up,
- 4:30Speaker 1: you know, no one can find AMMO. We heard from
- 4:33Speaker 1: an individual about him going to some website and this
- 4:36Speaker 1: wasn't the name of the website. But the website is
- 4:38Speaker 1: like bullets are us, you know, and lo and behold
- 4:41Speaker 1: he has all the ammal that no one can find.
- 4:43Speaker 1: So he plays a big order and his credit card
- 4:46Speaker 1: gets processed and no m O shows up. M hmm,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I gotta look out for that cast. So I thought
- 4:52Speaker 1: you fell prey to that by this Walleye boat scam. No, no,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I did not. I just listen to my mother, who
- 5:00Speaker 1: is very smart, smarter than me, and uh, he said,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you should start dabbling in bitcoin. And uh he said
- 5:11Speaker 1: if you put some money into it, that you can
- 5:14Speaker 1: still feel comfortable. You can still sleep if you lose it.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You know, your wife gets when you sleep when I
- 5:21Speaker 1: have COVID, and I slept too much. Yes, that is true. Um,
- 5:26Speaker 1: but so I'm dabbling in it, and uh, every day, Steve,
- 5:30Speaker 1: it's getting a little bit closer to that Walleye boat.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So now at this point, but then you went and
- 5:35Speaker 1: put more money in. I don't want to get too
- 5:37Speaker 1: deep into your personal finances, but you're in deep now.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I had some cash sitting in a drawer and uh
- 5:43Speaker 1: literally yea, and I took it out of there and
- 5:50Speaker 1: I put that in bitcoin. And I've been just slowly
- 5:53Speaker 1: putting you know, a hunter bucks in here and there,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and uh, Bitcoin right now is pretty level. I think
- 6:00Speaker 1: a lot of people are new to it. So people
- 6:02Speaker 1: are getting in bitcoin, they're making some quick cash and
- 6:05Speaker 1: they're selling. But just as of recent a lot of
- 6:08Speaker 1: people have been putting it into cold storage. Big companies
- 6:13Speaker 1: like even like Fortune companies are starting to dabble in bitcoin.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Tesla bought one point five billion and they make they
- 6:22Speaker 1: make like another one point five billion off of that already. Well,
- 6:27Speaker 1: he turned around and then he turned around. Elon Musk
- 6:30Speaker 1: turned around and suggested that it does seem a little high,
- 6:34Speaker 1: so that kind of sabotaged his own deal apparently, and
- 6:37Speaker 1: said that the decision to do that, I think he said,
- 6:41Speaker 1: the decision to do that wasn't really reflective of his
- 6:45Speaker 1: u He said something to the effect of um to
- 6:49Speaker 1: suggest that it was other other individuals were pushing for
- 6:53Speaker 1: that move more aggressively than he was. Got Yeah, I
- 6:57Speaker 1: had heard like he like they make I think last
- 7:00Speaker 1: really made like seven million off of car sales. And
- 7:03Speaker 1: it just in the short time that he's had that
- 7:06Speaker 1: that money in bitcoin, he's made over a billion dollars.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It's kind of scary, dude, man, imagine how many freaking
- 7:12Speaker 1: Walleye boats that is. It's a lot. Someone should divide
- 7:15Speaker 1: that out. What's the walleye boat cost? I mean, what boat?
- 7:19Speaker 1: You want your own? Walleye lake? Yeah, yeah, I am
- 7:28Speaker 1: trying to get like a nice simple eighteen foot land
- 7:31Speaker 1: with the motor on it, and that's all I need.
- 7:33Speaker 1: So then you're gonna quit your investment. That would be
- 7:36Speaker 1: hard to do. I think I'm crazy for wanting to
- 7:40Speaker 1: buy a Walleye boat off of it. So when the
- 7:42Speaker 1: time comes, I'll consult with different people and go from there.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Will I be included on who you consult with? I
- 7:49Speaker 1: think you should include me too. All right, Well that's
- 7:51Speaker 1: his bottle wallet boat. You know I need. I need
- 7:55Speaker 1: a Walleye boat. Partner, he did the old fashioned way.
- 7:57Speaker 1: He just went down and bought them boat. Yeah, that's true.
- 8:00Speaker 1: You didn't get tangled up crypto occurrencies, al right, Chester,
- 8:04Speaker 1: You can go back to whatever you're doing. All right?
- 8:06Speaker 1: Oh well, I'm sorry. How much more it might blow
- 8:10Speaker 1: up so much that you can just peel off, peel
- 8:13Speaker 1: off what you need. I've only made like a little
- 8:17Speaker 1: over a thousand bucks is all um total, But it's
- 8:23Speaker 1: we haven't made it yet. Well, I haven't put it
- 8:26Speaker 1: in my bank account. But because you could wake up
- 8:28Speaker 1: and it could be gone. It could. But it's just
- 8:31Speaker 1: going up and down right now. And I'm trying not
- 8:33Speaker 1: to like look at it very much because I know
- 8:36Speaker 1: in the long run. I think I think it's going
- 8:37Speaker 1: to pay off. And I'm dabbling. I'm not like invested,
- 8:41Speaker 1: just just a dabbler. A thank you, Chester. You bet
- 8:45Speaker 1: you should go visit that crypto mine in Butte, Montana.
- 8:51Speaker 1: You know why, Bill, that's what you know. Bill Gates
- 8:53Speaker 1: is down on it because of the amount of electricity
- 8:55Speaker 1: it takes to do the computations, and the fact that
- 8:59Speaker 1: he's not into these anonymous, uh, these anonymous, untraceable, unretractable,
- 9:09Speaker 1: terrorist style exchanges of money. Yeah. I agree, that's kind
- 9:13Speaker 1: of sketchy, but I'm just trying to buy a Walleye boat. Yeah, Steve,
- 9:20Speaker 1: it isn't isn't your mantra, don't hate the player, hate
- 9:23Speaker 1: the game. That's correct, Okay, I think that applies here.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I stold that from Clay. I'm not that Clay Nucam
- 9:29Speaker 1: made it up. I stole it from him when he
- 9:31Speaker 1: revealed to me that he's getting the He was lined
- 9:34Speaker 1: up to get the vaccination in Arkansas on what I
- 9:39Speaker 1: felt was pretty dubious grounds, which it didn't work out
- 9:45Speaker 1: for him in the end anyways. But he was getting
- 9:47Speaker 1: it as a public you know, as a basketball coach
- 9:49Speaker 1: for a schools. It's what he's getting it now. He well,
- 9:54Speaker 1: he was supposed to get it quite a while ago
- 9:57Speaker 1: and it initially fell through. All right, uh Yanni, do
- 10:02Speaker 1: your correction corrections? Wow, wow back. I don't know what
- 10:09Speaker 1: episode it was, but we read an email from a
- 10:14Speaker 1: fella that had had found a new use for the
- 10:17Speaker 1: su Vi kitchen appliance. Why why is that funny? Because
- 10:25Speaker 1: it didn't even occur to me until you brought it up,
- 10:28Speaker 1: Like how I thought it was genius? But then when
- 10:31Speaker 1: he brought it up to be courtly like, how not
- 10:34Speaker 1: a good idea it is? Oh yeah, no, yeah, I
- 10:36Speaker 1: think all of us in the room are guilty because
- 10:40Speaker 1: I was like, that's genius. Nobody called it out. Everybody's like, oh, yeah,
- 10:43Speaker 1: a great idea, Like, you know, next time the kids
- 10:46Speaker 1: have a cold pool, I'm gonna just drop my Subervie
- 10:49Speaker 1: machine in there. This fella had a had a birthing
- 10:53Speaker 1: pool set up in his house and um just was
- 10:57Speaker 1: struggling with keeping it warm, and he had by idea
- 11:00Speaker 1: to stick of Suvie wand in there and and it
- 11:04Speaker 1: kept the water nice. My father heard there's a building inspector. Yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 1: who heard this? So he's up on safety, and he said,
- 11:13Speaker 1: there's a lot of reasons, a lot of failures that
- 11:15Speaker 1: could happen that you don't plug stuff in and stick
- 11:18Speaker 1: it in the tub with you exactly. And he said,
- 11:22Speaker 1: is that appliance meant for that application? And thus we
- 11:28Speaker 1: should not talk about it or promote it. Da dada dada.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So there you go. Don't use a suvie wand to
- 11:35Speaker 1: warm up your bathtub water or um a clothes iron
- 11:41Speaker 1: m that would not work either. Don't drop plugged in
- 11:45Speaker 1: stuff into your tub with you. I I And when
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yad he brought this up, I initially was um, I
- 11:53Speaker 1: was I rolling. I was I rolling about the need
- 11:56Speaker 1: to clarify because I don't know how it really goes,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Like can you imagine let me let's just say, heaven forbid, right,
- 12:03Speaker 1: what winds up happening? Where does the judge wind up
- 12:06Speaker 1: being helmet? So you're saying that this that you listen
- 12:11Speaker 1: to like some knuckleheads on a podcast who are not
- 12:14Speaker 1: like baby experts or bath experts or electricians, and it's
- 12:20Speaker 1: called like like the slogan is like hunt fish listen,
- 12:24Speaker 1: but you took birthing advice from them, and now you
- 12:28Speaker 1: want to hold them liable. Dismissed, Yeah, where would he be, like,
- 12:35Speaker 1: by God, the buck stops here. An example that will
- 12:40Speaker 1: be held accountable for this transgression anyway, pointed out you
- 12:46Speaker 1: really wanted to go that far. Yeah, you just have
- 12:48Speaker 1: to worry about your own conscience. That's what Yanni brought up.
- 12:51Speaker 1: He doesn't want it on his He doesn't want on him. Yeah,
- 12:57Speaker 1: well it's off, you know, Yanni? Uh oh Kuran? Real quick?
- 13:03Speaker 1: What was the general um? Speaking of feedback, we got
- 13:07Speaker 1: another feedback thing here after the renewable what was that
- 13:11Speaker 1: episode called There's no free Lunch with with renewable Energy?
- 13:15Speaker 1: You said, there's a lot of people writing in. Was
- 13:18Speaker 1: it um generally? Was it all over the place? There
- 13:24Speaker 1: was there like a was there like a consensus um?
- 13:29Speaker 1: There were it was kind of all over the place.
- 13:32Speaker 1: He was at Corey. Corey forwarded me Cory's are all right?
- 13:40Speaker 1: Community manager? He forwarded me kind of the most I
- 13:46Speaker 1: don't know, salient of both sides, And it was a
- 13:50Speaker 1: bit all over the place. Yeah, there were there were
- 13:52Speaker 1: folks who We're really glad that we were just even
- 13:55Speaker 1: engaging the topic to begin with. There are folks who
- 13:59Speaker 1: just kind of railed on us not asking hard enough,
- 14:03Speaker 1: you know, pressing enough questions, or folks disagreeing with Nell's,
- 14:08Speaker 1: folks spouting off, folks thinking I mean it was it
- 14:13Speaker 1: just kind of ran the gamut. But there was a
- 14:15Speaker 1: lot of response to that, so it it hit, it
- 14:18Speaker 1: hit somewhere they paid attention. Yeah, I think we can,
- 14:23Speaker 1: you know, come back to it. At some point. They
- 14:25Speaker 1: weren't being mean to the guess right. I thought the
- 14:28Speaker 1: guests brought it. I thought he did a great job.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I don't think he was pushing. He was not trying
- 14:32Speaker 1: to remember I brought the obfuse. I'm not finishing any
- 14:35Speaker 1: of my sentences right now, but asking tough questions. I
- 14:40Speaker 1: think we asked the toughest of all question even to
- 14:42Speaker 1: ask the question like do you feel that the renewable
- 14:45Speaker 1: energy industry as it is obfew skates some of the
- 14:49Speaker 1: realities about what this would really take. That's like that's
- 14:53Speaker 1: like watching sixty minutes, dude. Yeah, And I mean I
- 14:57Speaker 1: should get like a like a a eyes for that.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I think I think his his kind of refrain and
- 15:07Speaker 1: why that was the name of the podcast is that
- 15:09Speaker 1: it's true, like he's it's just there's no there. There's
- 15:14Speaker 1: always going to be a compromise. They're going to be
- 15:16Speaker 1: a lot of things that are shitty if we as
- 15:19Speaker 1: a society continue to live the way that we do.
- 15:24Speaker 1: You know, like you guys are listening to this podcast
- 15:26Speaker 1: right now on your phone or on your computer, and
- 15:30Speaker 1: that's battery and that's like it's I mean, it's the
- 15:33Speaker 1: way that we are living right now. So if we're
- 15:36Speaker 1: going to not make those changes, we you know, we
- 15:40Speaker 1: got to do something. So Ela must thinks we're gonna
- 15:43Speaker 1: to go and populate other planets if we want to
- 15:45Speaker 1: keep this human race going. It's kind of I don't
- 15:49Speaker 1: even care about the human race as long as we
- 15:50Speaker 1: all blink out at the same time. I just don't
- 15:53Speaker 1: want to have to go on then everybody else gets
- 15:55Speaker 1: a stick around. I don't think it's gonna happen in
- 15:58Speaker 1: our life times, but I guess some bad fomo if
- 16:02Speaker 1: that happened. Man, if I knew it was just gonna
- 16:03Speaker 1: be like remember that movie um Melancholia with that asteroid
- 16:10Speaker 1: They like, you watch half the movie and you don't
- 16:12Speaker 1: know what's gonna happen. You know that everybody's acting like
- 16:14Speaker 1: extremely weird and it eventually realized that they know at
- 16:18Speaker 1: some specific second the Earth will be destroyed by an
- 16:21Speaker 1: asteroid and everybody gets to go at the exact same moment.
- 16:25Speaker 1: That's the way to do it. UM scrap metal. The
- 16:30Speaker 1: guy wrote in how they're making it way harder for
- 16:32Speaker 1: like drug addicts and derrelics to turn in scrap metal.
- 16:35Speaker 1: It's hard on crackheads now. So when you go in
- 16:40Speaker 1: now to a scrappyard, you gotta provide an address. They
- 16:44Speaker 1: don't pay cash for and weirdly they don't pay cash
- 16:47Speaker 1: for anything but steal. It cuts down a construction theft
- 16:51Speaker 1: because you've got a place to send the check coreas
- 16:54Speaker 1: you to have an address. The eliminating I think it's
- 16:59Speaker 1: I think it's prey judicial, but eliminating vagrants who might
- 17:03Speaker 1: just be wanting to make some drug stealing. And he
- 17:06Speaker 1: says that a lot of scrapyards have repeat customers. And
- 17:09Speaker 1: he once watched, he's from a scrapyard, he watched a
- 17:13Speaker 1: minivan come rolling in with a thirty six inch diameter
- 17:17Speaker 1: piece of cast iron sewage pipe stamp city property. He
- 17:21Speaker 1: said that the um the cops were there before they
- 17:24Speaker 1: could even unload it. Scrap is high right now, three
- 17:29Speaker 1: bucks a pound from number one copper steel is a
- 17:33Speaker 1: hundred fifty a ton for low grade. He was this
- 17:37Speaker 1: guy that wrote in was getting big into scrap himself,
- 17:39Speaker 1: but his mom doesn't like him leaving it all over
- 17:41Speaker 1: the yards. He's got to get his own place and
- 17:43Speaker 1: he'll get back into the business. The super cold weather
- 17:48Speaker 1: in Texas killed tons of stuff, tons of animals, All
- 17:53Speaker 1: those exotics that are from like Africa, Asia wiped him out.
- 18:00Speaker 1: In fact, if you watched the episode we did on
- 18:04Speaker 1: on Netflix, we have an episode where we go Neil
- 18:06Speaker 1: guy hunting. I go with Jesse Griffith's and we're on
- 18:10Speaker 1: a on a big ranch. We're hunting with a guy.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Wasn't you remember that guy's name that went out with
- 18:15Speaker 1: us to accompany us help us out. It was with
- 18:20Speaker 1: an A. I believe Amando Mondo. Amando, Yeah, but I
- 18:27Speaker 1: think they called him Mondo for short. Well there to Armando,
- 18:32Speaker 1: but Mondo called him that ranch. I was talking to
- 18:37Speaker 1: the guy there um the family that owns it. So
- 18:41Speaker 1: far they found this is days ago. So far they
- 18:44Speaker 1: just randomly accounted up eighty six dead nil guy that
- 18:47Speaker 1: throws a death and weirdly some of them, Uh, kind
- 18:53Speaker 1: of came up and like died against a house on
- 18:56Speaker 1: the tile like that. There's like some solar radiant heat
- 18:59Speaker 1: or something coming off that thing. How they found it?
- 19:02Speaker 1: I have no idea, Like why they would what about
- 19:05Speaker 1: the orcs and stuff? Some dead ones, but they can
- 19:09Speaker 1: handle it better. It's just far fewer. And he said
- 19:12Speaker 1: he hasn't done like an exhaustive survey. It's just that
- 19:14Speaker 1: just laying all over place. God, it's crazy. Yeah. This
- 19:19Speaker 1: article here points out that they've died on both high
- 19:22Speaker 1: and low fence, which makes sense because like why does
- 19:24Speaker 1: you know? And this what'sn't this picture of all these
- 19:28Speaker 1: dead creators they got? What kind of animal? Look? That's
- 19:34Speaker 1: what another body mind? Um? I was telling me. Yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 1: he said his body's place. All I believe he used
- 19:43Speaker 1: the word all the axes dear? Is that right? Geez?
- 19:48Speaker 1: That's the place that wit knows about. I don't know about.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Oh no, I was I was talking about Matt. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:54Speaker 1: the same place all the axes deer died. Yeah, there's
- 20:01Speaker 1: a zoo down there. They had to bring the flamingos inside.
- 20:05Speaker 1: That was interesting. They're like inside a restaurant. Um. Yeah, crazy,
- 20:19Speaker 1: you gotta wonder, like what you do with all that
- 20:21Speaker 1: rot who was pointing out that they wanted to go
- 20:23Speaker 1: down and get all the backstraps. Yeah, I know we're
- 20:28Speaker 1: saying that, just go down. If you woke up one
- 20:32Speaker 1: day and there's eighty six dead Neil Guy, man, what's
- 20:36Speaker 1: that times two D seventy two freaking backstraps you'd have
- 20:42Speaker 1: if you went out and got them all. Yeah that
- 20:45Speaker 1: imagine a full freezer with nothing but Neil Guy backstraps.
- 20:50Speaker 1: But what's that? What's that gonna do to the industry
- 20:53Speaker 1: down there? I mean it's gotta be I mean in
- 20:57Speaker 1: terms of whatever industry there is is around, in terms
- 21:02Speaker 1: of whatever industry there is around. Uh, those hunts, I
- 21:06Speaker 1: mean it's got a kick its teeth in. You know
- 21:10Speaker 1: Jesse Griffith's restaurant, and um, he sells a lot of
- 21:13Speaker 1: this stuff. So imagine that's going to complicate his world.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And then he only boy I don't know what he's
- 21:17Speaker 1: doing right now, but he only buys produced from Texas.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Stuff's all frozen, man. Yeah. And then all those people
- 21:24Speaker 1: without like acts that like their fridges and can't cook.
- 21:28Speaker 1: He was running. He turned his he turned um, his
- 21:32Speaker 1: restaurant basically into like he had like a social media
- 21:34Speaker 1: feed going about what they have, what key people can
- 21:37Speaker 1: come get, what they have in, what they're out of,
- 21:40Speaker 1: just trying to like feed people and use up stuff.
- 21:44Speaker 1: So it was almost like this like ticker tape of
- 21:46Speaker 1: information about what you can come down and get and
- 21:49Speaker 1: who's got what? Guy, were vulnerable animals? Aren't we as
- 21:56Speaker 1: bad as you? Guy? This is the weirdest thing. A
- 22:03Speaker 1: guy rode in. Cal who's not here right now is
- 22:10Speaker 1: the singer from ram Jam. If you go to YouTube
- 22:14Speaker 1: and look up the Black Betty, remember that song whoa
- 22:16Speaker 1: Black Betty? Have you ever read the lyrics of that song? No,
- 22:21Speaker 1: my god, does that guy look like Cal? Someone wrote
- 22:24Speaker 1: in pointing out the bass player. Look, but he's wrong.
- 22:26Speaker 1: It's a singer, is Cal? I don't. I don't see it, dude,
- 22:35Speaker 1: it's break and cal Man. Do you see it? Said
- 22:39Speaker 1: it's Cal. There's a screenshot that's not That's not the
- 22:48Speaker 1: right guy. God is it? The basis could tell I,
- 22:57Speaker 1: Oh so it is the base guy. Oh my I
- 23:02Speaker 1: I was looking at that trying to figure out what
- 23:03Speaker 1: he was playing. It's kind of like a mix between
- 23:07Speaker 1: Cal and uh Corey, Brittany's husband. Oh yeah, okay, yeah,
- 23:12Speaker 1: that is a base And I'm bad at music, man,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I can't tell an instrument. I'm looking at um looks
- 23:18Speaker 1: just like them. But that song is a weird song.
- 23:23Speaker 1: It's a dead ringer. Everyone go to a minute or
- 23:30Speaker 1: second on the ram jam Black Betty. The song is
- 23:35Speaker 1: weird because he's talking about a woman named black Betty. Okay,
- 23:39Speaker 1: and he likes her lot and really does she really
- 23:41Speaker 1: does it for him. But since she has a child
- 23:44Speaker 1: who goes blind, I thought it was goes wild and
- 23:48Speaker 1: blind and blind. Dude, it's a horrible song, but it
- 23:54Speaker 1: is cal big hit. This is a good one. Dude
- 23:59Speaker 1: rowing in about Uh. He's a tree surgeon. He wrote
- 24:03Speaker 1: the six He knew I used to be a tree surgeon,
- 24:04Speaker 1: so he thought it appealed to me. But a guy,
- 24:07Speaker 1: a fellow tree surgeon, guy had a nipple ring. And
- 24:09Speaker 1: the guy slid down a tree a little bit one time,
- 24:11Speaker 1: and a bark and a chunk of bart grabbed that
- 24:13Speaker 1: nipple ring tore his nipple right off. Another guy wrote it,
- 24:20Speaker 1: I don't know if this is true or not. I
- 24:21Speaker 1: have a hard time with this. We're talking a long
- 24:23Speaker 1: time ago about how you can sell Like I know
- 24:27Speaker 1: for a fact that Buck Bowden sold a well how
- 24:33Speaker 1: big was that moose? It's like a seventies some inch moose.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Giant sold it for it like tens of thousands of
- 24:40Speaker 1: dollars to a to Cabella's for their collection, and he
- 24:46Speaker 1: even knows where it sits now. He would he would
- 24:49Speaker 1: carry this big giant moose head around the rack he
- 24:52Speaker 1: carried around he's at a show. So if you go
- 24:54Speaker 1: to a show, like what's that thing in Harrisburg called
- 24:56Speaker 1: the famous one? Yeah, that's where I met Buck Bolten.
- 25:01Speaker 1: So there's these sporting like these outdoor shows, right, and
- 25:05Speaker 1: outfitters will have boots and they always have like a
- 25:07Speaker 1: little photo album. A lot of them have like all
- 25:09Speaker 1: kinds of taxes during the mouse Like you go to box,
- 25:11Speaker 1: just Bucks sitting there at a folding on a folding
- 25:14Speaker 1: chair with a photo album laid in front of him
- 25:18Speaker 1: like nothing like just doesn't like not a marketer, not
- 25:22Speaker 1: a marketer. And so I was, I asked, I feel
- 25:25Speaker 1: like talking to that guy. So I went and talk
- 25:26Speaker 1: to him a long time. He said he used to
- 25:28Speaker 1: have this big moose he'd carry around. But he brought
- 25:30Speaker 1: it to Harrisburg and some guys came up and asked
- 25:33Speaker 1: a bunch of questions about it. They left, and another
- 25:35Speaker 1: guy came up and made the purchase because they wanted
- 25:39Speaker 1: to put it in a sporting get store. Is in
- 25:41Speaker 1: the Harrisburg. I don't know he could tell where it is.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I can't remember where. He said it wound up best
- 25:46Speaker 1: parlor whatever is there. This guy is saying he found
- 25:48Speaker 1: a porcupine albino. He says Cabell has offered him seventy
- 25:54Speaker 1: grand and his grandpa. What the hell was it? His
- 25:57Speaker 1: dad says his dad turned it down. Oh that's where
- 26:02Speaker 1: I get incredulous. He says he monitored it on a
- 26:08Speaker 1: pile of sticks and pine cones instead. Yeah, I mean,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I feel like his dash would call in just so
- 26:15Speaker 1: I could say, really, seventy k huh, let's see, I
- 26:21Speaker 1: want to see a picture of this uh albino. I'm
- 26:24Speaker 1: sure if he's listening, sure you'll send it in. If
- 26:27Speaker 1: he writes in, maybe his PAPPI will talk to us
- 26:29Speaker 1: on the phone. We can grill him. We can grill him.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I'm actually looking at pictures of albino. Maybe there's a
- 26:38Speaker 1: story that goes along with it. That's worth seventy dollars.
- 26:42Speaker 1: I don't know. Well, maybe it's Elon musk No, but
- 26:47Speaker 1: he's saying that it's his retirement plan. There's Chester's Walleye
- 26:52Speaker 1: boat get like a freaking full electronics package and everything. Man,
- 26:59Speaker 1: you probably put two engines on that soccer. Uh, this show.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I gotta report this because this makes us look good.
- 27:08Speaker 1: This show solved the mystery. Not only we saved a
- 27:10Speaker 1: ton of lives by through well too, through not us,
- 27:16Speaker 1: dr Adam Lazare has saved two lives so far. About tourniquets.
- 27:19Speaker 1: This guy was up along the Muscle Shell River in
- 27:23Speaker 1: Montana and finds like it had burned. There was a
- 27:26Speaker 1: there's a prairie fire, and the prairie fire had stripped
- 27:31Speaker 1: away all the grass and sage and whatnot from this
- 27:35Speaker 1: little patch. And lo and behold, there sits a little tombstone.
- 27:42Speaker 1: No explanation about the tombstone. He was super curious about
- 27:45Speaker 1: and took a picture of the tombstone. Then he even
- 27:50Speaker 1: called the Office of the Land and the Administration, the
- 27:55Speaker 1: Administrative Office of the Land Management Agency. They didn't know.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Then we got talking about my new favorite book life
- 28:03Speaker 1: and death at the mouth of the muscle shell. He
- 28:07Speaker 1: goes and gets the book, reads it and finds a
- 28:10Speaker 1: very thorough explanation of what happened to this dude. But
- 28:14Speaker 1: that was unsolved for fifteen years. This is fifteen years ago.
- 28:18Speaker 1: That keeping them up at night, keeping them up at
- 28:21Speaker 1: night for fifteen years. Who wants to sum up what
- 28:24Speaker 1: happened to the guy? The guy's body in that book.
- 28:29Speaker 1: The amount of people shooting each other fiddling with guns,
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's oh, all the time. Yeah, it must be three
- 28:39Speaker 1: or four times there's someone's fiddling around the gun and
- 28:41Speaker 1: like shoots himself or shoots his body or whatever. Yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 1: well we didn't have hunters safety courses. Yeah. So this
- 28:50Speaker 1: fella whose name was Constant Cassneil Cassnell. It's spelled q
- 28:58Speaker 1: u E s n E l L. I don't know.
- 29:07Speaker 1: This guy was five six, Yeah, it's it's one of
- 29:12Speaker 1: the interesting things about Constant is that he was he
- 29:15Speaker 1: was a short fellow. Uh, he was a tinsmith from
- 29:20Speaker 1: Montreal and had listed enlisted in in Boston. But anyway,
- 29:26Speaker 1: it sounds like they there was a raid. Some sue
- 29:32Speaker 1: raided their stock and had their stock run around everywhere
- 29:36Speaker 1: and this fellow and another fellow went where must have
- 29:40Speaker 1: been right there. I don't know if they were shepherding
- 29:43Speaker 1: the stock or what um, but somehow they were part
- 29:46Speaker 1: of this being rated upon. And uh they found his
- 29:51Speaker 1: body with a whole bunch of arrows sticking in it
- 29:54Speaker 1: back and arm, and it looked as though, if I
- 29:57Speaker 1: don't really know how he's extrapolating this information from what
- 30:03Speaker 1: he could see, but he's saying that some of the
- 30:06Speaker 1: arrows in the hands and uh, we're evidently shot while
- 30:11Speaker 1: he had his gun to his face in the act
- 30:14Speaker 1: of firing at them, disabling him so he cannot use
- 30:17Speaker 1: his gun a breech loader, causing him to turn and run.
- 30:21Speaker 1: He's like just and so they're saying that, like, ye,
- 30:26Speaker 1: the angle of the arrow was as though he was
- 30:29Speaker 1: holding a rifle, aiming and shooting. I think that's what
- 30:33Speaker 1: he's suggesting. Well, he might not be keen to is
- 30:38Speaker 1: the um elaborate ways in which bodies would be sort
- 30:45Speaker 1: of mutilated in symbolic ways and like things done to
- 30:51Speaker 1: bodies to like send messages or to impact one's experience
- 30:56Speaker 1: in the afterlife. So who knows. I also just feel
- 31:00Speaker 1: that like sure they might have hit him as he
- 31:03Speaker 1: was in the motion of shooting that rifle. But to
- 31:08Speaker 1: say that someone's like taking a stick bow, I don't
- 31:11Speaker 1: know what range, and they're like actively trying to shoot
- 31:14Speaker 1: a guy's forearm or hand to disable him. Like that's
- 31:18Speaker 1: some pretty accurate stuff, you know, And like it's not
- 31:23Speaker 1: like you're at the range, you know, shooting at at
- 31:25Speaker 1: a target that's not moving. You're like in part of
- 31:28Speaker 1: a raid and you're like, oh, I'm gonna hit it.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Hit him in the wrist, and so you can't shoot
- 31:32Speaker 1: at me anymore. Skeptic. The skepticism is the chance to
- 31:36Speaker 1: do the intellect. John m Maybe they're really bad shots,
- 31:41Speaker 1: and that's as good as it. I mean, they got
- 31:43Speaker 1: him in the hand, and they were yeah exactly, they
- 31:47Speaker 1: were firing arrows. Yeah, and they happened to hit him
- 31:49Speaker 1: in their arms or he was hiding behind a stone
- 31:52Speaker 1: mm hmmm, and that's all that was sticking up. That
- 31:54Speaker 1: could be too, But I wouldn't underestimate those bows, because um,
- 31:58Speaker 1: we're gonna have we're working having Michael punk back on
- 32:01Speaker 1: about his new book that's coming out, The Fat about
- 32:04Speaker 1: the Fetterman fight and they killed I think the Sioux
- 32:11Speaker 1: called it like the Battle of One in the Hand.
- 32:14Speaker 1: But they killed something like eighty four eighty four US
- 32:19Speaker 1: soldiers with bows. I mean, granted they had there was
- 32:24Speaker 1: two thousand against eighty four, but killed him with bows,
- 32:26Speaker 1: man like mostly I guess there was some firearms. They
- 32:30Speaker 1: mostly did it with that. So, but you'd also read
- 32:34Speaker 1: about bodies being left with a hundred arrows in them,
- 32:37Speaker 1: which I think is like you're basically saying to someone, yeah,
- 32:40Speaker 1: you're super dead. You're saying to someone like, man, this
- 32:43Speaker 1: is like kind of like where we live. Appreciate you're
- 32:47Speaker 1: not coming round. M hm, go on, That's all I
- 32:54Speaker 1: had about Constant. Yeah, that's pretty damn cool, though, well
- 33:00Speaker 1: is getting shot up for finding that tomb stone and
- 33:06Speaker 1: then learning about it just by reading a book. Because
- 33:09Speaker 1: you know what especially interesting about it is that everything
- 33:13Speaker 1: that happened, not everything, the vast majority of everything that
- 33:16Speaker 1: happens in that book is underwater. Yeah, it's under for Peg,
- 33:21Speaker 1: as an enterprising fellow would get himself a scuba tank
- 33:28Speaker 1: and go down and look around and find cool stuff.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Dig around down there. Okay, moving on, We're gonna talk
- 33:36Speaker 1: about turkeys. But as a segue to turkey talking. And
- 33:39Speaker 1: it's almost like I almost hesitate to bring this up
- 33:41Speaker 1: because it Uh, let me, let me put this question, Jason,
- 33:45Speaker 1: do you know what I want? Do you know what
- 33:46Speaker 1: Seth is gonna present for us? Yeah? Do what do
- 33:51Speaker 1: do you feel? Um? Are you like just do you
- 33:54Speaker 1: love turkeys and you're just interested in all things turkeys?
- 33:57Speaker 1: Or do you feel like this negates something or do
- 34:00Speaker 1: you feel that it like does this diminish the work
- 34:04Speaker 1: of a turkey caller? Or is this just why not
- 34:07Speaker 1: know about everything? That's true? No? I think I think
- 34:10Speaker 1: it's something we strive for, like some of what we're
- 34:12Speaker 1: gonna listen to, like man, you know, I hate the
- 34:14Speaker 1: sound of a box sometimes, but like man, that's really
- 34:16Speaker 1: boxy sound. And so it's just it makes me think, like,
- 34:18Speaker 1: how do we sound more like that? Even though we
- 34:20Speaker 1: all know what we've been doing works and we had
- 34:23Speaker 1: a little pre conversation before you got here, like you know,
- 34:25Speaker 1: cadence is important, you know some of the other stuff
- 34:27Speaker 1: that doesn't matter as much as the sound, um, you know.
- 34:30Speaker 1: And then I don't want to necessarily get ahead of ourselves.
- 34:33Speaker 1: But like the seventies seven yelper hand coming up like
- 34:37Speaker 1: you know, we've always been oh, seven and nine, no, yo,
- 34:39Speaker 1: you know, one lesson, you're not gonna call in the
- 34:41Speaker 1: bird ten yelps, you're not gonna call the bird in
- 34:42Speaker 1: like seven and nine. And then you hear this real
- 34:45Speaker 1: hand out there just going down. So it's like it
- 34:47Speaker 1: always makes you think, but I think is a you know,
- 34:51Speaker 1: a guy that tries to sound as much like the
- 34:52Speaker 1: real thing, like you always strive to like, hey, yeah,
- 34:55Speaker 1: she might sound off, but I think a lot of
- 34:57Speaker 1: real hands aren't great turkey colors. That what got me
- 35:01Speaker 1: interested in finding out about like looking this stuff up
- 35:05Speaker 1: is I found that it was more helpful to me
- 35:10Speaker 1: to go on YouTube like and learning about learning turkey calling, right,
- 35:17Speaker 1: It was almost more helpful for me to go on
- 35:20Speaker 1: YouTube and just find hands, yep, find video of hands
- 35:24Speaker 1: making noise, because oftentimes, like so often when you're out
- 35:27Speaker 1: in the woods and you hear turkeys, they're not doing
- 35:33Speaker 1: the playbook. They're not always doing the playbook that you're doing,
- 35:39Speaker 1: Like you have an idea of the playbook, but then
- 35:40Speaker 1: you're like you'll be sitting there in the darks sometime
- 35:42Speaker 1: and just hear some hand just like open a tree
- 35:46Speaker 1: going nuts. And you would feel funny doing that yep yep,
- 35:53Speaker 1: like and this this hand on YouTube that if you
- 35:56Speaker 1: heard a person out in the woods did the raunchieste
- 36:00Speaker 1: does seventy seven yelp in a row sequence, you'd be like,
- 36:04Speaker 1: what is that dude doing? Yeah, that's that's a guy. Yeah,
- 36:07Speaker 1: or you'd say, you know, after thirty four, you'd be like,
- 36:10Speaker 1: that's not a dude. Yeah, that guy that he'd have
- 36:16Speaker 1: passed out by Now. It's really interesting, man, it's really
- 36:19Speaker 1: interesting to go watch stuff they do. But then it's
- 36:24Speaker 1: worth bringing this up to uh, you know, the tent
- 36:28Speaker 1: legion that that it's kind of like a this famous
- 36:30Speaker 1: turkey hunt book by this guy, Colonel Tom Kelly. Uh
- 36:36Speaker 1: philis subject matter expert. You're Tom Kelly expert. No, Ben
- 36:40Speaker 1: has just been showing it down my throat for the
- 36:42Speaker 1: last few months, so um, hardy to avoid. It's a
- 36:46Speaker 1: good book about turkeys. But in it he tells the
- 36:50Speaker 1: story where he's out in the woods one day and
- 36:54Speaker 1: he's watching a group of I can't remember how if
- 36:57Speaker 1: he's watching. He's watching either a group of Hends or
- 37:01Speaker 1: a group of Toms going about their business, and a
- 37:07Speaker 1: hen shows up near him, and sets to just yelping
- 37:12Speaker 1: her ass off. Okay, it's like spring. And he said
- 37:17Speaker 1: the gobblers didn't even pick up their head. So in
- 37:25Speaker 1: terms of you know, there's a big thing about like
- 37:27Speaker 1: what mood are they in? Yeah, like what do they
- 37:30Speaker 1: got going on? So if you do something and it
- 37:32Speaker 1: doesn't respond in your heads, like he doesn't think I'm
- 37:36Speaker 1: a hen, right, yeah, but then that trick them. But
- 37:41Speaker 1: then here's a hand standing there and they're like their head.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Mike Chamberlain was saying that their testosterone levels changed daily
- 37:48Speaker 1: up and down, and one day I have that problem.
- 37:52Speaker 1: One day, one day their testosterone might be low and
- 37:56Speaker 1: you call to them and they don't give a ship.
- 37:58Speaker 1: But the next day you're on that same and his
- 38:00Speaker 1: testosterone levels have risen and he's like interested. Yeah, it
- 38:05Speaker 1: sounds like a bull elk man, I got it. I
- 38:08Speaker 1: got a little idea I'm hatching right now, testosterone injections
- 38:13Speaker 1: for turkeys, but corn out with testosterone keep me breaking
- 38:17Speaker 1: two logs. Yeah, I see. I've always been like, I've
- 38:22Speaker 1: always subscribed to the idea, Like, you know, their hand
- 38:25Speaker 1: up and if they got there for sure, thing like
- 38:27Speaker 1: they're not interested, but I'd be curious in that example
- 38:30Speaker 1: you shared, like when the real hen was next to him,
- 38:32Speaker 1: like it wasn't truly just a flock of Tom's or
- 38:35Speaker 1: were they locked down on a hand um, Because if they,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I would I would got to read the tent legion.
- 38:39Speaker 1: I would throw a fit. I would pack my calls
- 38:41Speaker 1: up and go home if it was nothing but Tom's
- 38:43Speaker 1: over there. No hens locked down and they didn't even
- 38:45Speaker 1: look at me. I'm all right, I'm I'm out of here.
- 38:47Speaker 1: You're having to change I've been having. I had a
- 38:49Speaker 1: big fight with Clay Nucom down in Texas where we
- 38:53Speaker 1: went out one day, bright, early in the morning to rattlebuxing.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Okay um, we had reason to believe based on Yanni
- 39:02Speaker 1: rattling a couple basically into the truck with them, we
- 39:04Speaker 1: had a reason to believe that on this property, ratling
- 39:06Speaker 1: worked very well. We go out in the morning and nothing,
- 39:12Speaker 1: and I'm like, damn, what's going on? You know? Then
- 39:15Speaker 1: we go in the middle of the day and one
- 39:17Speaker 1: after the other and I don't think it's at their
- 39:20Speaker 1: testospherone level spiked. I argued to Clay that I'm like,
- 39:24Speaker 1: for lack of a better word, I think bucks are
- 39:26Speaker 1: bored at two o'clock, and I think in the morning
- 39:30Speaker 1: they're kind of like, oh, the dolls are doing this,
- 39:32Speaker 1: they're moving around, stuff's going on. And then everybody's just
- 39:36Speaker 1: laying around board off their asses, and they hear a
- 39:40Speaker 1: rattle and he's in The dolls are bedded, and he's like,
- 39:45Speaker 1: I'd run over there real quick. I'm not gonna miss
- 39:46Speaker 1: out on something exciting. Yeah, I'm thinking, which Clay thought
- 39:50Speaker 1: that was a stupid idea. I'm thinking he's already checked
- 39:54Speaker 1: the betting area. He knows all those doughs are not
- 39:56Speaker 1: in heat, and he's like, whoa, somebody's fighting over hot
- 39:59Speaker 1: over here. So maybe not board, but you know what
- 40:02Speaker 1: I'm saying, His mood change, his circumstances changed in some
- 40:07Speaker 1: kind of predictable fashion at a certain time of day.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Maybe they're testosterone rises with the temperature. Mine doesn't. Okay,
- 40:30Speaker 1: seth share Uh, I don't know how you want to
- 40:33Speaker 1: do this. I want to play. So this is like
- 40:35Speaker 1: you got some good ones. I have a couple. Um here,
- 40:40Speaker 1: let's do this first. Which one of you boys, Derek
- 40:43Speaker 1: or Jayson, Which one of you boys wants to um
- 40:46Speaker 1: give us like a conservative hunter sits in the woods
- 40:52Speaker 1: and goals yep, yep, yep, yep. Am I gonna use
- 40:56Speaker 1: your collar yawnies. It doesn't matter to me, man, whatever
- 40:59Speaker 1: one you think it's gonna be the most conservative for
- 41:01Speaker 1: you sitting in the woods, I'm not using either of yours.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I mean used to meat coal. Okay. This is a
- 41:13Speaker 1: conservative turkey hunter who's like, man, I gotta play it cool.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I don't want to give these turkeys the wrong idea. Okay,
- 41:26Speaker 1: now is that like that's probably still like they're just
- 41:28Speaker 1: out of the tree or still in the tree, like
- 41:29Speaker 1: real quick, I call that conservative. Al right now, SA's
- 41:32Speaker 1: gonna share with us like some some turkey noises. Yeah,
- 41:35Speaker 1: so I love these things. This first one just totally
- 41:38Speaker 1: debunks the the like, don't call too much. Seven to nine, yep, Cadence,
- 42:02Speaker 1: just not stop. It's like having a kazoo out in
- 42:04Speaker 1: the woods. That's the hunter. That's the hunter. I love it.
- 42:29Speaker 1: So after hearing that, you know, maybe you could call
- 42:34Speaker 1: a little bit more. Yeah, because if they don't come
- 42:40Speaker 1: in your eyes, like I'm gonna give him the sigh
- 42:42Speaker 1: of the treatment. Yeah, no, one's I don't know. Maybe
- 42:44Speaker 1: some people are. Maybe some people are like, dude, I'm
- 42:45Speaker 1: gonna pour the coals to it. There is there are
- 42:50Speaker 1: I can't remember the guy's name, someone that Jay Scott
- 42:52Speaker 1: hunted with, uh Yargust. Maybe you guys know that name.
- 42:57Speaker 1: He was like, there's so many guys that have been
- 42:59Speaker 1: like national turkey calling in championships, but I believe the
- 43:02Speaker 1: guy's name is Billy Argus. And that was the first
- 43:05Speaker 1: guy that Jay I think had heard and that I
- 43:07Speaker 1: had heard where like even in the dark on the
- 43:10Speaker 1: tree set up. His attitude is pour the coals to him,
- 43:15Speaker 1: just talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk
- 43:18Speaker 1: and be like, no, I am the only hand you
- 43:21Speaker 1: need to be focused on right here me and just
- 43:24Speaker 1: hammer at him. And he had great success. I like
- 43:27Speaker 1: that guy, that's your style. Yeah, I don't the whole
- 43:31Speaker 1: like be quiet, be patient, that's that's not good. I
- 43:34Speaker 1: want to be like that hand. I just want to
- 43:36Speaker 1: run that call as much as possible. Hit. That's what
- 43:39Speaker 1: another one seth Okay, So this one is a hand
- 43:42Speaker 1: that if if I heard this, hen let's say I'm
- 43:46Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania and I'm walking through the woods and I
- 43:50Speaker 1: hear this, I'm like, that is a dude on a
- 43:52Speaker 1: box call and he sounds terrible. Um, this this turkey's
- 43:58Speaker 1: clocks are more like squeaks. Like some sound good, but
- 44:12Speaker 1: you'll hear a couple. They're just like squeaks. H m hmm.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Like every once in a while there's one in there.
- 44:42Speaker 1: It's just like a squeak, and I'd be like, that's dude,
- 44:44Speaker 1: just like messed up a little bits like there's a
- 44:47Speaker 1: problem with his box called. Yeah. So yeah, real turkey,
- 44:53Speaker 1: you got another good one. Hits one more good one,
- 44:55Speaker 1: you'll be I'll clean this all up, right Phil, This one,
- 44:58Speaker 1: this one's just a hand that gob that's gobbling. Oh,
- 45:03Speaker 1: which is interesting. That's the hunter turkey. That's a hand,
- 45:22Speaker 1: that's a hand. Yeah. And if I heard that in
- 45:28Speaker 1: the Turkey Woods with you know, a bunch of pressure
- 45:30Speaker 1: around me, be like, that's a dude on one of
- 45:31Speaker 1: those gobbles things. So that's a real turkey. This this
- 45:39Speaker 1: is right here. It's almost like a Jake gobble too,
- 45:55Speaker 1: kind of halfhearted. Okay. One of the things we wanted
- 45:59Speaker 1: to do in head into this is uh and headed
- 46:01Speaker 1: in talking about some of this is um, we're trying
- 46:04Speaker 1: to get our favorite turkey biologist, Mike Chamberlain. What's this
- 46:07Speaker 1: what's his Instagram thing called super Interesting Man? Oh? I
- 46:10Speaker 1: love his posts Wild Turkey Doc, dude. They should have
- 46:14Speaker 1: it be that he's the only person that can be
- 46:16Speaker 1: on Instagram, Like Instagram should just be his thing and
- 46:21Speaker 1: everybody has to follow it. Yeah, because it's like it's
- 46:25Speaker 1: just like information, useful, applicable information. I like how he
- 46:33Speaker 1: apologizes to for like being too long, Like he knows,
- 46:37Speaker 1: he knows like how much people can tolerate and how
- 46:40Speaker 1: much they want to read. A lot of times I'll
- 46:43Speaker 1: be like, all right, a little bit longer this Tuesday.
- 46:45Speaker 1: He only gives you one a week. Yeah, what's this
- 46:47Speaker 1: thing called? Is handles? Wild Turkey Doc? Yeah just one
- 46:52Speaker 1: word and yeah, I highly recommend checking them out. Instagram
- 46:56Speaker 1: should be called wild Turkey dock. And when you go,
- 47:00Speaker 1: it's just his stuff. No, you can't start like an
- 47:03Speaker 1: account and start putting your own stupid stuff up there.
- 47:06Speaker 1: It's just his stuff. So Karan asked him a question.
- 47:11Speaker 1: We're here because I don't think we asked this before.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Uh Karan wanted. We wanted to ask him mainly, Um,
- 47:19Speaker 1: what is going through a turkey's mind when it's being
- 47:21Speaker 1: called at right. We do all the talking about like
- 47:26Speaker 1: mimicking the sounds, but what might be on the turkey,
- 47:31Speaker 1: like the one receiving the noise? What does it really cape?
- 47:35Speaker 1: Is it really sitting there being like m mm hmmm,
- 47:39Speaker 1: is that a person or what? Yeah? Or is it
- 47:44Speaker 1: like is it telling me to come? Is it telling
- 47:46Speaker 1: me to go and telling me that there's a good
- 47:48Speaker 1: food over there? Right? Yeah? Does this sound like sex
- 47:52Speaker 1: sex sex sex sex or food? Food? Food? That's old
- 47:58Speaker 1: Betty Lou over there. I remember her from last year.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Steve is dying to know what on earth is going
- 48:08Speaker 1: through a turkey's mind when it's called at well, that
- 48:13Speaker 1: is a good question. Unfortunately, we can't interview turkeys, so
- 48:18Speaker 1: it's hard to know with certainty what they think or
- 48:23Speaker 1: perceive when we call to them. But what we do
- 48:27Speaker 1: know is that turkeys at least partially recognize each other
- 48:31Speaker 1: based on their calls. We also know that, because of
- 48:36Speaker 1: the way hearing works in birds, that they perceive calls
- 48:41Speaker 1: differently than we do. So you kind of need to
- 48:45Speaker 1: think about, so how does a turkey here? If you
- 48:48Speaker 1: understand how they hear, then I think it helps kind
- 48:53Speaker 1: of navigate, Well, what are they perceiving. So turkeys they
- 48:57Speaker 1: don't have an external ear like we do, so they
- 48:59Speaker 1: don't and have flaps on the outside of their ears
- 49:02Speaker 1: that help funnel sound into their inner ear canals. You
- 49:06Speaker 1: can see the ear canal on the side of their head.
- 49:08Speaker 1: It's kind of just blow and behind their eyes. But
- 49:12Speaker 1: without an external ear flap, they have to come up
- 49:17Speaker 1: or or they have to use different ways of determining
- 49:20Speaker 1: direction and distance to sounds. So what what turkeys do
- 49:24Speaker 1: is a sound comes into one ear, and the ear
- 49:29Speaker 1: registers the volume of the sound, and the other ear
- 49:33Speaker 1: acts independently to register a different volume to that sound.
- 49:38Speaker 1: And if you watch turkeys, you'll see them do this.
- 49:40Speaker 1: They constantly are turning their heads. That allows them to
- 49:45Speaker 1: determine because they can figure out through that volume adjustment
- 49:49Speaker 1: where is the sound coming from left, right, up, down,
- 49:52Speaker 1: And as they turn their head, it helps them kind
- 49:55Speaker 1: of refine where exactly is that sound coming from. And
- 49:59Speaker 1: turkey h owners will tell you know, they have this
- 50:02Speaker 1: uncanny ability to just pinpoint the exact distance to a sound.
- 50:08Speaker 1: And the way they do that is because those sounds
- 50:11Speaker 1: are coming in their ears and being registered by the
- 50:15Speaker 1: brain differently than we hear sound, and because we also
- 50:19Speaker 1: know that birds in general hear different frequencies in calls
- 50:25Speaker 1: than we do. We call to a bird and there's
- 50:28Speaker 1: a very simple you help you, help you, help you up,
- 50:31Speaker 1: or whatever sound we make, and they hear that differently
- 50:35Speaker 1: because they can perceive different frequencies than we can. So
- 50:39Speaker 1: you you kind of factor that into the equation, combined
- 50:43Speaker 1: with the way that they hear sounds in the in
- 50:45Speaker 1: their ears, and that allows them to perceive much more
- 50:50Speaker 1: complex messages in calls than us humans are capable of perceiving.
- 50:56Speaker 1: So we don't really know. Again, I've never been able
- 50:59Speaker 1: to interview a tom to ask him, but we do
- 51:03Speaker 1: know that birds in general and turkeys obviously hear their
- 51:06Speaker 1: world differently than we do. So we know because of
- 51:10Speaker 1: how cute they're hearing is and because of the way
- 51:14Speaker 1: they're hearing works, they can pinpoint direction of sound with precision.
- 51:20Speaker 1: And a person once told me it was a famous
- 51:23Speaker 1: turkey researcher that imprinted birds and watch their behavior. He
- 51:28Speaker 1: told me that turkeys have an incredible sense of place,
- 51:31Speaker 1: and what he meant by that was they hear a
- 51:34Speaker 1: sound and they know exactly, not only the direction from
- 51:39Speaker 1: which that sound came, but where that sound originated from
- 51:43Speaker 1: on the landscape. They essentially have a GPS and they
- 51:47Speaker 1: can pinpoint that call or that sound came from that spot,
- 51:52Speaker 1: and they can go to that spot. And we see
- 51:55Speaker 1: this really commonly in some of our research where we
- 51:58Speaker 1: are tracking hunters and turkey simultaneously. So we we have
- 52:03Speaker 1: tom's that are running around with GPS units on, and
- 52:06Speaker 1: we have hunters that are carrying a GPS in their jacket.
- 52:11Speaker 1: It's bizarre, but turkey hunters have we know this occurs,
- 52:14Speaker 1: but we've had numerous situations where a person ends up
- 52:18Speaker 1: calling to a bird from a spot, leaves because the
- 52:23Speaker 1: turkey doesn't show up, and three or four hours later,
- 52:27Speaker 1: the bird ends up at the exact same spot the hunter,
- 52:32Speaker 1: and that just tells you that the bird knew exactly
- 52:36Speaker 1: where that call was coming from. It just wasn't in
- 52:39Speaker 1: his routine that morning to walk over to that sound.
- 52:42Speaker 1: He said, you know what, I'll go check that out
- 52:44Speaker 1: a few hours from now, because my morning routine is
- 52:47Speaker 1: I'm going over here and do this and then I'll
- 52:50Speaker 1: get back to to that sound. So to take a
- 52:53Speaker 1: little detour, Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I've actually put some
- 52:57Speaker 1: maps out on social media showing what that looks like.
- 53:00Speaker 1: It's really crazy. They they'll end up hours down the
- 53:03Speaker 1: road right where you were sitting. Wow. Yeah, that's that's why.
- 53:08Speaker 1: That's why God made naps. Like I'll often make mistaken
- 53:16Speaker 1: of having my naps somewhere else, Like you go off
- 53:19Speaker 1: to a good nap spot. What you should do is
- 53:21Speaker 1: your last call session at nap time. You should pick
- 53:25Speaker 1: a good spot. I'll sometimes do this, like a good
- 53:28Speaker 1: little Heidi spot where you can call nothing calms and
- 53:32Speaker 1: then take your nap right there. I'm gonna write a
- 53:36Speaker 1: book about that. I'll tell you a story about choosing
- 53:39Speaker 1: a bad nap spot. Please. Yanni was there. This was
- 53:44Speaker 1: what two seasons ago when we took Maggie and Tracy
- 53:47Speaker 1: hunt turkey for the show. Um the turkey that Maggie
- 53:52Speaker 1: and Yanni were after we called to and then he
- 53:57Speaker 1: ended up drifting away and we laid down and took
- 54:00Speaker 1: a nap, and I woke up to a turkey putton
- 54:03Speaker 1: and opened my eyes and the turkeys standing two ft
- 54:06Speaker 1: from Maggie. Oh, he had come. He had come and
- 54:09Speaker 1: was standing like she could have reached over and smacked
- 54:12Speaker 1: the bird just like Dr Chamberlain was saying, no, kid
- 54:16Speaker 1: man just walked right into us. There's a bunch of
- 54:18Speaker 1: people sleeping there. You know what else I'm thinking about
- 54:22Speaker 1: as he's answering his question, is this idea that you
- 54:27Speaker 1: know when when we look at dear what dear c right,
- 54:30Speaker 1: like when you look at your setup camo and all that,
- 54:34Speaker 1: Like you're looking at you, you have like an idea
- 54:36Speaker 1: of what it looks like. But then you get into
- 54:38Speaker 1: how deer's eyes are or duck's eyes are or whatever.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Their experience is probably totally different. Like you can't even
- 54:44Speaker 1: you'll never maybe not ever, I can't foresee where you
- 54:48Speaker 1: would look through a thing that shows you what it sees.
- 54:51Speaker 1: But from all indications are it is not seeing what
- 54:53Speaker 1: you see, and so you're you're you're sort of like extrapolating,
- 54:58Speaker 1: you know. I think that's why trial and air is
- 55:01Speaker 1: so expensive. You can't just look and be like that's hidden.
- 55:04Speaker 1: It's it has to be more like I've done this thing,
- 55:07Speaker 1: and here's how the animals respond, and I've done this thing.
- 55:09Speaker 1: Here's how Andrew respond. I don't know what it is.
- 55:12Speaker 1: I can't replicate it, but I'm learning that this type
- 55:16Speaker 1: of thing really gets their attention, you know, this type
- 55:19Speaker 1: of thing they just look right through. Um. Abernathey, who's
- 55:24Speaker 1: a biologist, was saying one time he would talk about
- 55:29Speaker 1: iridescence on birds and bird he's I know he's talking
- 55:32Speaker 1: about what they hear, but he's talking about bird vision.
- 55:35Speaker 1: And um he thinks that when a turkey looks at
- 55:38Speaker 1: a turkey, it just is not seeing what you see
- 55:43Speaker 1: in terms of the iridescence on those feathers. So when
- 55:46Speaker 1: they so, when they're looking at like a foam decoy
- 55:48Speaker 1: versus a real bird, it might not even look close.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Even though all right, it looks like another turkey, it's
- 55:53Speaker 1: not not what he says. He thinks that fan is
- 55:55Speaker 1: just screaming at that turkey. I agree, I would. I
- 56:01Speaker 1: think it's like fireworks going on. And then like now
- 56:05Speaker 1: back at home, like the big things like real turkey
- 56:07Speaker 1: like stuff for decoys, you carry like a full mounted
- 56:09Speaker 1: bird around with you and then that way you get
- 56:11Speaker 1: the full you know, you got a real bird sitting there.
- 56:14Speaker 1: But I wonder if you see, like you said, it
- 56:16Speaker 1: comes back to testing, like you have to test that
- 56:18Speaker 1: over and over and over out in the field to
- 56:19Speaker 1: see if it works any better. He he was very early,
- 56:25Speaker 1: long time ago, this Abernath. He started messing around with
- 56:28Speaker 1: real turkey feather decoys and he just took a decoy
- 56:30Speaker 1: and got a hot glue gun and glued the feathers
- 56:32Speaker 1: onto the thing. And he had one with him when
- 56:35Speaker 1: I was hunting with him in Florida, and I can't
- 56:37Speaker 1: hear what he said. He said something like, thirty two
- 56:40Speaker 1: turkeys have seen this decoin, they're all dead. That works.
- 56:48Speaker 1: What constitutes a quote unquote good call versus a bad call?
- 56:55Speaker 1: We have Well, let's say we as a human being,
- 56:59Speaker 1: I can listen to a call and think, oh, that
- 57:01Speaker 1: sounded pretty good, But we have absolutely no idea what
- 57:04Speaker 1: a turkey thinks is a good call or a bad call.
- 57:07Speaker 1: And any turkey hunter can tell you this. If they've
- 57:10Speaker 1: hunted enough that you'll use one call and get no
- 57:14Speaker 1: response whatsoever, and you take a different call out of
- 57:17Speaker 1: your vest, and all of a sudden there's a bird
- 57:19Speaker 1: that's gobbling and he's right there. Why didn't he call
- 57:22Speaker 1: to the first call and he did to the second?
- 57:25Speaker 1: Or another experience we've all had is you start calling
- 57:30Speaker 1: and suddenly there's a bird a hen that's nearby and
- 57:34Speaker 1: she's mad as hell, and she approaches you and starts
- 57:37Speaker 1: cutting at you and yelping at you. And we don't
- 57:40Speaker 1: know what she's thinking, but presumably because we know they
- 57:43Speaker 1: recognize each other based on their calls, she either doesn't
- 57:47Speaker 1: recognize you and wonders why you're there, or she thinks
- 57:51Speaker 1: she recognizes you and she doesn't want you there. I mean,
- 57:54Speaker 1: that's the two logical assumptions I have. Either way, for
- 57:59Speaker 1: whatever reason, that call caused her to get upset, and
- 58:02Speaker 1: she comes and tries to find you so that she
- 58:05Speaker 1: can tell you that she's upset. So we don't really know.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I mean, I can call okay now. But I killed
- 58:11Speaker 1: turkeys years ago. When my calling sucked, I thought he sucked,
- 58:15Speaker 1: but there was a bird out there that didn't agree
- 58:17Speaker 1: with me, and I thought, hey, that sounds pretty good.
- 58:21Speaker 1: And I think a lot of it goes back to
- 58:23Speaker 1: the ecology of the bird. Because a hen, she's thinking
- 58:28Speaker 1: in her mind, she's geared to reproduce and lay a
- 58:32Speaker 1: nest and hatch in the spring. She has grown up
- 58:37Speaker 1: around other turkeys, and she recognizes their calls and she
- 58:42Speaker 1: recognizes what they look like. That's the other way that
- 58:45Speaker 1: that we think turkeys recognize each other is based on
- 58:47Speaker 1: their heads, which is one reason why you'll often see
- 58:50Speaker 1: turkeys when they're fighting, they're pecking at each other's heads
- 58:53Speaker 1: because that's their form of recognition. So you have a
- 58:56Speaker 1: hen who's geared towards reproduction and she is going to
- 59:00Speaker 1: be by herself and spend part of the spring alone.
- 59:04Speaker 1: She's been gregarious prior to that, meaning she's been in
- 59:07Speaker 1: a group prior to that, and she recognizes everybody in
- 59:10Speaker 1: her group. The tom's, on the other hand, they're geared
- 59:14Speaker 1: towards reproduction solely, and their fitness improves by breeding more hens.
- 59:21Speaker 1: So the more hens I can breed, the more fit
- 59:23Speaker 1: I am. So in his mind, he may not care
- 59:28Speaker 1: whether he's hearing Sally or Janet or Susan or whoever.
- 59:34Speaker 1: He's just thinking, I can reproduce with that sound, and
- 59:40Speaker 1: that's a good thing. So it makes sense that tom's
- 59:44Speaker 1: would be more responsive to a wider variety of calls,
- 59:48Speaker 1: you know, a crappy call or you know a world champion,
- 59:52Speaker 1: Grand champion caller, because they're thinking with reproduction on them,
- 59:57Speaker 1: you know, on the mind. That's the way I kind
- 59:59Speaker 1: of I kind of look at it. Given how acute
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: turkey hearing is, you know, do we do we need
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: to screech at them at the figuratively the top of
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: our lungs and we when we call to them. Do
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: we really need to be like that loud and obnoxious. Um, well,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: they're going to be some people that disagree with this,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: but no, no, we don't. There are situations where using
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: a really loud call when you're trying to locate a bird,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: maybe the winds blowing, or you're you're trying to project
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: sound in the environment at distance to hope that he
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: can hear you. Yes, that's grounds for squawking away. But
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: if you're fairly close to a bird, and when I
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: say fairly close several hundred yards, you don't need to
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: call loudly. This bird can hear very very subtle sounds.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: And we've all probably been in this situation where you
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: you're scratching the leaves, or you reach over to pick
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: up your call all and you make a noise and
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: a bird gowls. I tend to call louder than I
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: think I probably need to. And the reason I say
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: that is one of the best turkey hunters that I've
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: ever been around he calls so soft that I can
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: barely hear him when I'm sitting with him. And that's
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: that's the truth. It's crazy. And before I started hunting
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: with this guy, I tended to call much louder than
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: he he does, and I was successful. It worked, but
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: sometimes it didn't. And when this guy calls, he calls
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: so softly and so subtly that I'm serious that you
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: I'm sitting ten yards from him. It's it's so soft
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: that I can barely hear the notes, and yet birds
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: come right to us. In fact, I don't even call
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: when I hunt with this guy anymore. I just let
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: him call because what few times we hunted together last year,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: we had birds in front of us almost every single time,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: so it was like, well, you do the calling. I've
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: also been in situations where I made calls and just
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: scratched in the leaves or did something really subtle, really quiet,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: and birds are responding from hundreds of yards away. And
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: then kind of back to some of the other things
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: we've talked about. That allows a bird, because they can
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: hear so well, that allows them that GPS at internal GPS,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: to figure out that's where that scratching and the leaves
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: came from I'm going over there and I'll check that out.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I do think in general we tend to call too
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: much because the bird, once they hear you, they know
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: where you're at. They know, okay, well that call came
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: from right over there. So once the bird realizes you're there,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: in my opinion, you're better off to call quietly, if
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: at all, once they've responded, because they know you're there
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: and they know exactly how to get to you on
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: their own terms, which unfortunately often ends up with them
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: winning and us losing. But they know how to get
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: to where you are with precision. Man, I'll tell you
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: all this talk about the randomness of it or they're
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: crazy noises there is because I've just seen it so
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: many times. People that are just so good, like Jason,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: you know what you've talked to guys uck right, Like
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I've just I've gone out hunt with guys up where
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: I've gone out and hunted all morning on a place okay,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: with whatever results, sometimes good, sometimes not. But then guy,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I'll be in the afternoon like, oh, let's gonn take
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: a walk, and he let's go out and like starts calling,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: you know, to get a gobble, and it's like someone
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: putting like a ton of pressure squeezing a zip man,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: because he just keep like very quietly, just like going going, going, going, going, going,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: going going, and all of a a sudden, like it's like
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: the thing just like can't like he lays it out
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: in the way that the bird just cannot help itself.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Like when dude goes out, he's going to call in
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: a turkey morning or afternoon? Is he tricking you with timing?
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: So like the old times, the old timers, like the
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: old timers like we were always the young bucks, like
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: get up, you want to hear all the birds on
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: the rust. Just get that, you know that fun in
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: And then the old timer he's like back at camp
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: eating breakfast, drinking his coffee. He's gonna let all of
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: us come back, take our nap. He's gonna go out
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: noon and kill the bird. This isn't the old This
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: isn't the old noon trick. This is like the this
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: is like the four or five o'clock. Not he's just
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: gonna get him. He's just a good he just like
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I don't know, he's good. Talks turkey experience. That's what
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: it comes down to. Does he do anything different, Like
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: you don't know, it's just the mood. I think it's
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: like a lot of mood reading. Also, the dude lives
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: on the property, right, Yeah, so he kind of knows
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: like where people are, people meeting. Probably had some of
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: the GPS trackers on that second and you didn't know it.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: So like we're just gonna keep but now, you know,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: kind of going back to what he said, like you know,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: even like scratching the leaves, like is there something that
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: like a jake? You know, like do the different birds
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: as they mature, do they start to hear different? Can
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: they differentiate between like sounds? Like That's one of the
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: things I've always I'm just kind of the nerd out
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: there under the tree, like why can't I get this
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: three year old bird to break away? But you have
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: these jakes come running in. You know, of course they're
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: they're hand up or whatnot. But you always wonder like
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: is they mature, do they become smarter or do their
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: ears become better? Or is it just truly uh, you know,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: I'm in any to breed all these hands, so I'm
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: not worried about that hand that's over there in the brush. Um,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: you know, like, how do you break that code? Um,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: But that's why you know, I kind of mentioned timing
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: because you know turkey hunting timing is here, like, go
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: let all those hens go lay Now you have a board,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: asked Tom sitting out in the field or you know,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: I don't got anything to do. So now you strike
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: them up at mid day, and that Tom more so
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: than elk, more so than any other animal, just because
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: the way that they have to lay on that on
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: that clutch eggs. You know, it's like, Bam, you can
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: get that Tom that you fought with all morning for
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: the last week straight, but you go hit him at
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: noon and that thing's gonna come in just like that. Yeah,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: I feel like it's we talked about this before, but
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: it's like to not go out at daybreak feels dishonorable.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: I don't like it. Yeah, but then there's a lot
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: said just like lay around, go out there at ten.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: But you feel like you're coming in in the middle
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: of a conversation. I agree. Yeah, So tell people what's
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: going on with Phelps game calls man, So, um, we
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: announced what it was almost two weeks ago. Now that uh, yeah,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: you're my new boss. Can I call you? Boss. I
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: would first say that we're colleagues, colleagues, co workers. We're
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: co workers, so we we we're gonna be able to
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: talk about turkey calls. Right, let's be the first time
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: I can finally like talk about the turkey call. So
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: August seventeenth, type me and dirt drove over last year
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: or no, it's just me this time August talk about
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: this turkey call line that we had tried to launch
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I think two years ago and never really got feet
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: off the ground. And um, I was here and I
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: think Garrett at that time went took out the breakfast. Hey,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: would you ever be interested in, you know, talking about
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: selling folps game calls? And I remember that distinctly. No,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: I'm not interested. You did, Yeah, I never heard that. Yeah,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: So I tell Garrett, No, Dirk Durham, were you there
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: for that conversation. We're sitting out there at the at
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: the Western on the sidewalk eating breakfast, and I don't know.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: We approached you and you were like, uhh no, so
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: wait wait wait we got wait like four more hours.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: So then you're not a man of convictions. No, no, well,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: I you know it's like it's maybe playing your cards right,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: like you don't want to just come out like heck, yeah,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I'm looking to maybe move on or do something. I
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: thought maybe you sent the guys out to like go
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: feel out films testing waters a little bit. So I'm like, no,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: not really, I'm I'm kind of happy where we're at.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I'd love to, you know, get this project going with
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: you guys though, And then fast forward like four hours later,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: we go to lunch with Josh and Garrett and Josh
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: brings the question up. I'm like, yeah, I mean i'd
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: be willing to entertain it, like what it looks like,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: it's not just and then it got some legs from there,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: and um, I remember like on the mountain all September, uh,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: like I was with Yanni in Colorado and they're like yeah, Josh,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: like yeah, you onnly. I don't know if he knows yet,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: like you know, we don't need to talk about it,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: so like we're sitting here hunting, like I don't know
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: if your honest knows at this time I'm supposed to
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: say anything. And then by time we get like to
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: New Mexico, Um, like I'm sending like trying to sign
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: PDF so that we can open the books up, and
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: so it was throughout the fall. I've spent pretty much
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: the last four or five months in my life like
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: getting this deal kind of straight with everybody, and uh yeah,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: and now we're here with kind of what launched this
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: whole thing and releasing the Meat Eater X folks Um
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Turkey co line. Yeah, and you're gonna, um, you're staying
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: on board. That was a stipulation. Oh yeah, yeah, no,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: And that's remember you're saying you'd signed a twenty year contract.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: I wanted to. I'm worried they said five years. And
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna once they got everything from me there,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: gonna kick me to the curtain. I'm just but no,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: it's good. Um, you know. I I'm one of those guys.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I described the situation like, you know, back with Howie
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Mandel around, like let's make a deal, Like I'm the guy.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: As soon as that got like six figures on the board,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: I was running, you know. And so it's like I
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: put a lot of work in and with the kids
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: kind of growing up and stuff, it's like, man, I
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: would you know what the help that the meatter team
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: can give me? And it's still like, you know, whether
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: we want to dive deep into it, like the financial side,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: like every year, like no matter how successful were, it's like, man,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: here we are again, like getting ready for next year
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: and like the bank accounts draw you know, to produce
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: that next year. And it was a little bit of like, man,
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: we're doing a great job. We have We're turning big
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: numbers everyhere. But it's just like the financial stress and
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: so like talking with you know, the team getting through there,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I'm like, man, I think this is where I want
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: to go. I want to have a little bit more
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: of my life back. Um, all my kids know is
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: this business is we me and me, my wife have
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: you know, with what friends and family have built this thing.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: And it's just basically I want to you enjoy this
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: this little bit and and still do a lot of
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: the cool stuff. And um, you know, I had two diabetics.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: My wife and my son are both Type one like
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: juvenile on set, and so like I couldn't leave my
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: state job. Like there were all these things and and
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: like it couldn't have been more perfect. Like when we
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: started talking to the meat Eater team, like man, you know,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: the benefits are good, this is good, this is good,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: and it's just gonna work out. As we've mentioned in
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: some of the other things, like it's the right team,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: I think to grow this thing and do some cool stuff.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: So when I would tell people about what we're leading
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: up to, and I would talk about how, you know,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: how you guys are such renowned callers and in somebody's
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: kind of revolutionized the elk calling in a way and
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: also grew up hunting like the hard elk yea like
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: hunting the shittiest elk in the world. Yeah, you know,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: and like learned how to do that. But I'm really
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: known to be the Yeah, it's really really tough elk.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: And I don't like the like the well go ahead.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: I mean, I don't want to throw any of the
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: big hunters under the bus, you know. But you see,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: the back when we were growing up, the you know,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: the sportsman's channel, the the outdoor channel hunters, the big
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: elk hunters we all looked up to. You can I
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: mention names like you like the wild Primost. Yeah, they
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: would go and film it at these famous ranches. Now
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: there's anything wrong with going to the famous ranches, but yeah,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: so they you know, they were the elk hunters, like
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I looked up to Will like I watched as soon
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: as the truth came out, Like I was driving to
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: my local Sunbirds, I was buying the DVD, so I
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: go popping in and watch it. And then as I
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: grew up like spots where we were successful. You know,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Dirk isn't in the same stuff. I mean, but he
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: probably some of the other hardest elk in the world
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: to hunt, aside from the coastal jungle. But you would
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: watch these, you know, proclaimed olk hunters come and just
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: get their butts kicked on the coast. You know, everything
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: there wants to bite you, eat you. It's wet, it's
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: and you know, people have just struggled on the coast
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: to kill these you know, tiny st rows of belts
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: in the world. You know, their bodies are huge, but
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: we've got these little you know, I've killed meal deer
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: that are bigger than most of my bulls I killed
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: my backyard. But they are hard, hard elk to hunt,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: and so in the I mean, the densities are so
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: much look like everything about it you can't see there.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: It's not like, oh, here comes the three hundred of
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: them out into the alfalfa field. You know, it's just
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: like a different kind of Yeah. And I grew up,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: you know, hunting industrial Timberland, So it wasn't any of
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: the you know hunting down on the hayfield or down
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: the off off of field. That was you know, beaten brush,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: you know, down on the bottom of big canyons, you know,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: Devil's club, anything that would bite you, poke you stab you, um,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: you know, ferns up to your chein. It was just that.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: That's how we grew up elk hunting. And you know,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: it's like I loved it, but it was definitely tough,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: especially you know, getting to start hunting milk all over
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: the West. Now, I'm like, man, that was that was
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: tough compared to some of the other stufe. You might
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: as well just leave your binoculars in your truck. Um,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: it's just that kind of hunt. And he's Washington every year.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: I haven't. I've got a lot of pressure to come
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: back though, Like it's, oh, yeah, you gotta go to
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: all these other states and draw these tags and do this,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: and and there's a lot of pressure on me, I think,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: to eventually come back. And that was the last time
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: you hunt in Washington. Two. You don't have this little
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: you don't have little local honey hooles. So I I
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: take that back, like for myself the last time two
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: thirteen when when some hunting partners or stuff will get
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: like a muzzler tag and I've got time, will go
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: out and so, um, you know, my wife drew a
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: good tag and seventeen so I hunted there. But you know,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: it's only had so much time up until now with vacation,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: you know, and trying to squeeze the hunts in. So um, yeah,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: I'll eventually come back and hunt, you know home. I
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: have a hunted with my dad um and my uncle's
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: um for a long time. Um, you know, aside from
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: like a weekend trip maybe to just go out with them.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: So I want to get back and you do that
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: once before they get too old. When I talk to
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: people about it too, I would say, like, man, he
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: built the business in his backyard, you know, And I
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: mean and by that, I mean he built a business
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: in his backyard. No, it was I shouldn't even tell
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: on myself because it's a little embarrassing, but it was
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: just that it was the way we had to do it.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Like we'd go to package calls and you know, my
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: mom or my wife. They were doing the majority of
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: the packaging. Um, and like they would go into my
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: closet like I had I had, uh, you know, like
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: my racks of finished calls were like sitting in my closet,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: like here's the here's the clothes that I wear to work,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: and then here's like the calls that we need to
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: send out. Like as it grew, and that was just
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: kind of what we had to do. We we started
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: it all in the thirty six. By thirty it was
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: literally my garage. We kicked all the vehicles out, kicked
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: everything out, all the four wheelers, everything, and like no,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: this is and we're gonna do this. We're gonna do
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: it this way, and we made it work. Some appointed
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: out didn't he realized this, but it Someone pointed out
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: to me too, Um that the customer service number was
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: your cell phone is still we're in the process of
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: getting that transferred over. But if if you call the
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: number on the back of the packaging, and that's why
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: I would always pretend like we're bigger than we were,
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: right because you use an accent when you answer, Let
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: me transfer that to Jason. If you need to talk
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: to him. You know, like people are always surprised, like, oh,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: I didn't expect to get you on the line. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: the customer service must afforded, like have the calls forwarded
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: to me right now or something, because he didn't want
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: to look that podunk that your cell phone number, but
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: now my cell phone number. We're working on getting that
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: change because it lives on all of our packaging. So
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: it was easier just to get me a new phone number. Hious.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: He's not lying a body of mine, and I totally
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: go get some fellows game calls. He had I don't
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: know what what it was, but he had something. I said,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: he had a problem. I said, you should just call
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: it the customer service. I'm sure they'll take care of you.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: And then he got back to me He's like, you know,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: I think I talked to Jason himself. I'm gonna I'm
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: gonna just auto for it everything to Dirk, like quite
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: a few of those two. So yeah, they're they're handled
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: to start to handle most of the email customer service stuff.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: Though my numbers on there for some of that stuff,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: for like for dealers, but some people I think they
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: just call numbers until they get somebody and they're like,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: who hey man saw on the internet. Yeah, but you
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: know it was just cool. It's cool to be part
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: of the family. Um, we were able to bring everybody along. Um,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: and a lot of people, I think, and maybe I
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: can clear up from our side. Maybe you guys don't care,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: but like a lot of our followers may be different
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: than than the meat followers. And I think the most
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: asked question is, oh, you guys are gonna change. We're
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: gonna become, you know, meat eater ish. And I've I've
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: told everybody like it's been more important to you guys,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: and it has to me because I want to be
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: able to like do some of the cool stuff you
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: do or like why do you guys this post is cool?
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: And like it's been more important to the people I've
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: dealt with that we stay phelps game calls, we we
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: is are a quick wit. We use our um you know,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: like you guys marketing, don't. They don't think we have
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: quick No, No, I think you do, but like they
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: want to. Yeah, I want to know what becoming meat
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: eater ish means. I don't know what that. I don't
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: know what they expect from that, but like it's been
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: told to us multiple times, like we want you guys
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: to make a post and maybe have a misspelled word
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: or you know, like you want you to the polished me.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: You guys know how to spell and from them too good.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: There's probably some software you can do the just mixture
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: that all the words get to spell man. Know. So
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: it's you're gonna start throwing around salient. I don't. Actually,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: so you guys in all your big words like super
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: intimidating for for a guy from Po. Uh so, no, no,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: uh so you always been into elk, but how long
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: have you been into turkey hunt? I end up talking
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: to somebody this morning. I probably my passion was probably
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: higher for turkeys early on than it was for elk.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: It was more, it was more attainable. Um you know,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: I would grew up a rifle elk hunter. Um so
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: as a kid, like calling to turkeys was the thing.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: And so I remember in junior high like I was
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: a nerd that would sit and print off like a
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: hundred page report on like calling turkeys, and like read
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: through it and then try to mimic you know, what
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: was out there. And so you know, my first passion
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: may have been turkeys before I got crazy into elk calling. Um,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: you know, my my turkey call collection, Like I still
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: have a big Ammo case full of just all the
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: turkey calls. I would buy way more than I needed
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: and and um around home. It was tough though, because
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: we have probably the hardest turkey in the world to hunt.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: And I'm I'm saying that without doing a bunch of research.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: But in the Washington State, they have three species. We
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: have the Easterns, the Rio, and the Merriam. They decided
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: to put the Easterns on the west side of the
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: state where I live, where it's wet and very very
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: poor light reproduction rate. UM, so a lot of what's
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: left there. But I mean, we would spend our entire
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: March April just trying to find one or two birds
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: to hunt. Um. And so just finding him was a
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: tough part. Calling him in and killing was actually way
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: easier than finding him because the hand numbers were so low.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: You just start crying kind on a yelp, and that
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: bird was at your feet. Um. And so we kind of,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: you know, cut our teeth on some of those those
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: birds that were extremely tough to hunt. And then as
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: I got older, got a car I got to drive
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: over to eastern Washington. The places is pretty damn good,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: and like, all right, this is what real turkey hunt
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: supposed to be. You know, you could get on a bird,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: switch birds, you know, four or five times in the
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: morning and get a ton of experience real quick. It's
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: it's interesting how turkeys went for so many people in
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: the country, particularly in the West and in the far north,
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: where he didn't have like our dads weren't didn't hunt turkeys,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: you know. So in Michigan, I remember early on, I
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: remember when I still lived there, that there'd be draw
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: tags right now. You hunt the whole, you know, pretty
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: much matter where you living, get a turkey tag and hunt.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: But being like a big deal, like someone got a
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: turkey tag, they're driving up north to turkey. And I
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: left around that time, so I never hunted turkeys as
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: a kid. And then even when I moved to Western Montana,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: I remember when the unit's out there, I put in
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: one year and drew a tag when it was like
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: they were giving out like twenty tags up in the region,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: one or two or something portions of it, right and
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: and no one knew about it, and drawn the thing
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: and no like no being raised in the north and
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: living out west, sort of like no institutional knowledge about it, right,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: it wasn't raised by a turkey hunter, and and so
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: many guys in the Southeast and areas of the South,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: it just has always been a thing. They never missed
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: the seasons. But in these places where turkeys had to
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: be reintroduced or flat out introduced, it was as much.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: So I feel like I've kind of almost discovered it
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: and study it in a way where even though I've
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: been doing it for a long time now, it's like
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: still feels kind of new. There's still an excitement about it. Um.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I think I didn't kill my first turkey. I mean,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: I'm forty seven now, so I've been hunting turkeys every
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: year very avidly for twenty years, which sounds like, oh,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: that's long career of turkey hunting, But to me, it
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: still feels new because I just like grow up with it,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, I've I've been so busy on the
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: big game side, Like I haven't turkey hunted for like
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: the last six years, um, you know, And so I'm
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: excited to get a chance to get back out there
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: and spend a couple of weeks chasing birds again. But yeah,
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: it's it's the same way, like more even more so
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: than elk, like nobody being an arch real hunter and
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: knowing how to call to them, Like Turkey was completely foreign.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: We had nobody local that hunted him. Nobody knew how
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: to give us any tips. And so it's like you
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: just went to the internet, like hey, how do you
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: what do you do? How do you make sounds? Once again,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Will Primos in the Truth was like, all right, I
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: can learn something from these guys and and try to
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: employ some of this and and came up with their
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: own strategies. But heck, I don't even know. I mean,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: we've killed a lot of birds and we're really successful,
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: but I don't even know if I'm if we're doing
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: it right or whatever right is. Um, you know, we're
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: just super aggressive like elk hunters. We get close, we
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: scare bird, we get closer, we try it, and who
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: knows if it's right. I'm gonna get yelled at for this.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: There's probably gonna slap me, But like to me, it's
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: it's like elk hunting in in the spring, Like we
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: use the same exact strategies. We locate them, we go
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: get close. Aside from not having to you know, fluff
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: the wind checker, um, it's pretty much the same game,
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: um for a lot of parts. And so I love
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: that that being able to talk kind of control the
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: bird and then be able to be aggressive remy warrants
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: blood pressure is rising, right, he doesn't like that, but
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: but I get it, yeah, because it's a it's an
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: audio experience, um not grow. When we first started hunting
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: turkeys and the I guess the mid nineties, uh, we did,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: like I guess anybody would you know, we go out
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: and get a box call. I remember going out. We
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: were so naive about it back then, getting a box calling,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: going out and not having chalk and pull over. I'm
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: not kidding you, man, sitting there with my brother pulverizing
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: sandstone with rocks into a dust that we could then
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: rub on there to try to get some more notes
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: out of it. I'm not joking, man, and then typically
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: just losing patients and then doing belly crawls. Oh yeah.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: And it was fun over time because at first, like
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: we would go out and we would glass them up
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: and just kind of hang like almost like if you're
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: you know again, like to go to the elk. Thing
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: would be like the strategy of like kind of finding
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: or heard seeing what they're doing, and trying to just
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: like make something happen by nudging out in front of them.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: We would go out and and just try to like
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: do stuff, ditch crawl and bush them, bush whack them,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: and then gradually being like, holy sh it, you can
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: call these things in and how much and just how
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: much fun it became and to be where now, Um,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: I just don't I don't bush whack them, Like I
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: don't bush whack them? Is there anything not that I won't?
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: But it's not Maybe I kind of won't. You killed
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: a cripple one year? Do you hear that jumped up?
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: But that was crippled. See, even as a call maker,
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: like as much as I want to show the calls off,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: there's something that I absolutely love about being able to
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: sneak in on a on a flock of turkeys. Um,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: you know, And I'm gonna put this claim out there.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: It's not necessarily the safest way, because who knows if
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: somebody's calling do them. But if you know you're in
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: a patch of timber or a wooded area, you know,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: or an area that there's not a bunch of other
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: turkey hunters. Um, I love to like do that call
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: and you know, sneak calling sneak and calling sneak and
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: then you know, eventually you know, kind of fool their
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: eyes and ears as well aside from calling. So I
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: still as much I do, like you said, love to
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: call him in I there's still something about like tracking
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: a turkey down and like beating his maybe his best defense, sneaky,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: sneaky hunter if you can sneak up to within shotgun
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: range of a turkey. I'm bill for being sneaky at
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the right size and stature. No, it's it's fun. I
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: love calling them, but um, you know it's like there's
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: there's part of me it still sometimes like especially once
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: they get me a couple of times, I'm frustrated. I'm
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: just gonna go track you down and kill you. What.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: When we were working on so we set to a
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: project a while ago of doing um because we're all
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: huge like here us folks that spell real good, are slow,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: slow witted, are oh boy, very interested in turkey hunting,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: And so we hit out an idea to try to
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: start trying to like work up that we would have
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: like a line of turkey calls that and I think
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: we talked about would be that, Um, I like to
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: think about and then doing it stuffing like gets people
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: up and running for me, because earlier I was telling
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: the story of just trying to like figure it out,
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: you know, and learn how to be like basically proficient
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: because you could be a phenomenal caller that I was
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: talking about, guys up being a phenomenal caller. But I'm
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: almost kind of surprised by the fact that every spring,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: I like, dumb ask me, like, every spring, I'm able
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: to kill a handful of turkeys by a combination of, um,
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: understanding the birds work in the habitat right, like taking
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: their mood, but also just being able to do the
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: like at the right time the right amount of calling,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: you know. And that's been hard to learn, man. And
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: I think that the and and learning how to like
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: just get like basically proficient at calls can be a
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: challenging process. Um, I like trying to be pretty open
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: about the fact that, like it's not like I just
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: pick them up and kick ass, but I've got to
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: the point where with the right stuff I can make
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: the right noise and kill turkeys. And I think that's
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: that's important to note, is everybody picks one up and
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: if they need to be the best. It's like, as
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: you know, as the interview earlier, you just need to
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: I think cadence is important and as you mentioned, you know,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: being in the right spot at the right time, making
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: the right decisions, um, being you know, extremely patient. Like
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I'm not very patient, so it's it's ruined a lot
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: of turkey hunts for me or where I would have
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: been successful quicker. But yeah, I don't think you need
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: to be able to pick these up and be the
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: best caller out there. You don't need to be you know,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: willing or able to go you know, take first or
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: second on the stage or whatever it may be. You
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: just need to be able to make the sounds and
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: be more confident in making the sounds. That was the
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: point I wanted to make, man, is uh, getting to
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: that level of confidence where when you're in a good situation, um,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: having the confidence and then do what you need to
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: do because like you just don't want to do it
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: and have like some crazy sound that's just so far
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: off it's not gonna work. But getting to where you're comfortable, like,
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: at the right moment, I'll be able to do it. Yeah,
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: there's a lot of cocky. Yeah. I think a lot
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: of guys will get set up and they're so scared
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: to make a sound. They're like, well, we'll just take
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: our chances, like if that bird decides to walk by,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: will kill him. If not, we're just not gonna make
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: a sound, you know. Um, And they'll just be silent.
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: And I'm like, well, you at least need to get
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: to the point where on whether it's a box, a pot, like,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: you know something, you need to be able to at
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: least make a sound so that bird knows you're there
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: and and draws their attention to U spot. Otherwise just
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: sitting there. You know, your chances are are really low.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: I think you know, I'm actually wearing my meat or
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: T shirt right now. That shows the probability of a
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: turkey just walking by you if you do nothing. What's that?
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: What's the percentage? It just depends, but it winds up
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: being in this scenario, I think you have like a
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: nine percent chance that he'll just walk by, younge. It's
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: like all the computations to figure out, um it's distance
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: from you. You just sit there and it's distance from you.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: And if you factor in this all these kind of things,
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: what the odds it will pass within shotgun range at
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: various distances as it goes about it roost. It's coming
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: from a fixed a fixed point you call, you crawl
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: into seventy yards? This is the question. You can see
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: that we have a lot of different that's that, that's
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: this computated Yeah, that's a turkey on there. That's a
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: computation the same thing. And be that you crawl within
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: seventy yards of a turkey on its roost and do nothing?
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: What are the odds that will pass within shotgun range?
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: So thirty yards on either side of you? Yeah, I
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: think it was like nine. Or I had a guy
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: I was cleaning fish one day in Michigan and there's
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: a guy looking at this shirt and he says, you
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: know that's wrong, And he's the one that sent I
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: can't remember one of these around here's the one he sent. Oh,
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: I didn't know that those aren't from the same purpose.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: He's like, he goes, I see what they're doing, but
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: I do it that way. And he sent us a
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: new formula. It's somewhere around here. Either way, it's it's
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: better to try to do something. It's better to try something.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: In order to try something, you gotta have the confidence
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: to do it. So when you're going to talk about
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: making calls, a little bit like what like how you
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: make them? What the hell is the turkey call? So
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: like specifics because I mean, I talk through the whole
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: walk through the whole arsenal. So there's there's multiple ways
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: to get to what sounds like a turkey. And I'm
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: not gonna you know, I'm not gonna say that I
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: developed any of this. It's trying to perfect it and
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: make it sound right and most of all easy to use.
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: But in this lineup, we've got a box call, which
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: is maybe the oldest form of calling turkeys out there.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: You know, two pieces of wood, um, the friction between
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: them making a turkey sound, a yelp sound, cluck per um.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: We've got diaphragms, which I think are probably the most
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: popular out there. Um you know think so, I think, well,
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: I think they're the most used. Um, maybe they're not
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: the most popular, but they're the most used. Um, I
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: think they were. They're the one that everybody aspires to
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: because it's hands that's where I was gonna get. I mean,
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: we're calling the burden. Like I've only ever called one
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: bird into the gun with the box call, and I
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: was scared to death. But it would only answer that
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: one call because there's so much movement, Like you can't
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: sit there and not make movement. Same with a pot call,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: like it works great, Um, but you gotta have set
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: somebody up on the air side of the tree or
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: away from you, or some deflection so that they're not
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: looking at where the guns at. Um. But you got
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: the diaphragms, and we've got the pot calls. So it's
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: kind of when you look at the three if you
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: just stick to the I mean there's other things too,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: like wingbone calls and all like little spring loaded boxes.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: But if you take those the standards, it's kind of
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: amazing if you look at them, the wildly different technological
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: approaches to produce similar sounds. Those similar sounds, like you
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: think that they would all look like a lot like
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: each other, but they're real different, look different. But I
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: think that the imagine to help me here, Jason. But
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: like the components are friction and then a chamber, Yeah,
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: a sound chamber. Friction aside from the diaphragm, like there
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: were just but all the other ones technically can fall
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: into that group of like the slot calls, the pushpins,
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: you know, all of that, um you know wingbone. Back
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: in the day, I tried to make some you know,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: wingbone calls, and I mean that's that's just like air, um,
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: you know, going through the three different leg sections. A
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: guy sent me some beautiful wingbone pretty it's fun to mess.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: They sound good. I haven't given it the amount of time,
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: but he sent me a video of him doing it. Yeah,
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: he does nice little clocks on it. Got you. I've
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: always wondered like if there's a uh you know, correlation
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: between like how good they look and how good they sound,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: or because they can make him beautiful, But like does
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: I think it's like it's like an it's like an
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: artisan thing. Man, he like makes artism calls, but then
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: he has gone out and killed turkeys with them. But
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: it's it's very much. Um yeah, it's like it's more
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: about craft. Yeah, yeah, I think than than than functionality.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: But it is interesting. You take a turkey's wingbone, chop
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: it all up, reassemble it and suck on it and
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: make like a turkey sound. Yeah, it's cool. I mean,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: you can all do that with a hollow stick probably too. Yeah,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: they've they've manufactured wingbone calls. To what you're doing on
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: wingbo calls, you're basically like you're everything else is, you know,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: their mouth calls. You're blowing on a wingbone call, you're
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: basically puckering and sucking. Yeah, it's like a reverse kiss almost. Yeah,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: it's like you put your mouth on this little tube
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: and go. Yeah. I had said something going aside one
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: time to do it, and I'm like it was just
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: too too deep. And I'm like, man, you can only
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: make certain sounds, and I'm just gonna stick with these ones.
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: So I wouldn't it be interesting if you could go
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: back in time for seventeen fifty, right, and I know,
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: you know, you know, you know, you know, like the
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: Frontiersman and Boone's Air, like they ate a lot of turkeys.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: You know, they did a lot of roof shooting and whatnot.
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: But were those guys sitting out there sucking on wingbone
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: calls or they have been and I shoot him out
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: of the tree man the dark. I ain't back then
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: when it's I think they're shooting out of the tree.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: They just want to eat them and mess around with them.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: This call and now it's frowned upon legal in most states.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: I think it was. Abernathy was telling me the story
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: about an area where there was historically like very few turkeys.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: And he was saying that someone he knew or some
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: relative at his has a story where they saw a
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: turkey in a tree and came home all excited. They
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: went back and shot the turkey down out of the
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: tree and brought it home and it was a buzzard.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: But it's like, that's how rare turkeys were. Man, I
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: don't as much as you guys just laughed. I don't
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: want to know if I want to tell this next story.
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: Oh please, I'm a buzzard shooter. When I was young. Um,
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: one of the areas we've had lots of turkeys. I
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: was probably high school senior, junior in high school. UM,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: me and my wife were going on a bike ride
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: or something kind of just to go check on the turkeys.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: And sure enough, something flushed up into a tree and oh,
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: there's birds here, Like you back out. I'm gonna run
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: home and get a shotgun and I'll come back out.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: And that bird had dropped back down in the field
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: and they kind of snuck through the field and that
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: was stinky old buzzard. Man. But as you know, it
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: was season, it was everything was and you know, ended
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: up shooting my first buzzard. I don't want to go
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: into detail, but I've had occasion to smell a buzzard
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: and it's all their worldly orders. Oh they're disgusting. That's
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: not good an So yeah, back to the call. So yeah,
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: we've got the three different calls. Um, you know, when
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: you go into a box call, you're trying to pair
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: up two woods that worked well together. You know, you
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: could have put walnut on the walnut. You could put
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: you know, cherry walnut. And we're kind of the standards.
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: You can get into the exotics. But um, like man,
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: I think when we sat out, when we set out
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: to make this call, we wanted it to be good looking.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: But then also more importantly for me and us, is
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: it for it to sound good. And so there's a
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: there's a nostalgia to box calls where they bring out
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: there's the ornateness to them. Like oftentimes people touch a
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: box calling, the first thing they comment on is it
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: it's beautiful. Yeah, and I mean, well the listeners can't
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: see this thing right now. Um, but I mean this
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: is I keep my ear turned to the Turkey world
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: and like pay attention to box Like this thing is
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: is a piece of art, the one that we put
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: together in it and it more importantly, it just sounds good.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: And so um is Steven mentioned earlier like one of
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: the things you have to do to get this call
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: to operate is you need to get the lid to
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: grab to the sidewall of the box. Um. And so
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: we use chalk to do so. And then um, as
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: you swipe I'm looking at the calls, the right handed
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: callor I'm gonna swip the paddle right to left, it
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: will make contact higher up the box. Um. So you
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: need that to be a little bit thicker because we
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: need to get less vibration out of this sidewall. And
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: then as it gets down towards the bottom, we we'll
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: hear that call start to break over and that's where
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: it gets thinner. People at people at home. Imagine if
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: somehow you don't know what this is, Imagine you have
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: a rectangular box with a wooden lid. Yep, but then
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: the lid is fixed at one point, so the lid
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: can just kind of slide back and forth. So we're
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: sliding the lid across the lip of the box. And
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: so you just be down right excited and then not
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: to pat myself on the back. But these things come
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: out of some you know, some routers, some three D routers,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: as close as possible. But there's no when you're building
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: a call out of wood. It's not like this latex,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: which I can take every piece of latex speck it out.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's point three inches exact. It's uniform wood
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: as wood. And so here's the big crux of building
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: a wood call that sounds good is that this thing
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: might have grains that goes perfectly straight down the sidewall.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: It might have some sap wood in it, it might
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: have some figure in am. I have a burrel on
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: one side, and so here I am. After they'll come
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: off of the machine. You have to literally tune one
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: of these hand by hand, you know, one after another,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: each side by hand to get it both sides to
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: run like a turkey. What does that process look like
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: when you're doing that? So I get it's kind of
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: like if you can imagine me being very angry at first, um,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: because I'm gonna I'm running the box way harder than
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: I should. I'm really just trying to get that chalk
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: to like bite into the grain and really just like
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: fill the call up with chalk. And then you're listening,
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: Like as you do it over time, you you get
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: a pretty good ear for it. Like if it sounds
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: like it's scratchy, like the box call I have is
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: not tuned on the left side, So if I start
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: to hear like wood versus would like a scratchy it's
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: typically in the paddle. UM, So I'll take the paddle off,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: or I'll stand the paddle and try to get it
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: to smooth out, or maybe there's like a little bit
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: of a chunk out of the paddle. Um. If it's
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: not like if the timing is not right, like hide
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: to low, and like in Cadence, it's typically on the sidewall,
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: so I'll go mess with the sidewall and then out
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: a section and and it's kind of it's really an
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: art to kind of hand tune these things. Now, we
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: could set up the machine to just do all this perfectly,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: but once again it's would um. And so for me
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: rather than throwing half of these boxes in the garbage,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: because I don't want to put your name, the meat
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: eater name, or the Phelps name on them. I don't
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: want to toss these all. What we do is we
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: do kind of a conservative build on a box call.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Give me a lot of meat in that wall, and
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: all slowly stand my way into a call that sounds good.
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: How long does it take you to tune one? Um,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: it really depends. Some of them will give me like
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: a five to ten minute fit, like need a lot
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: of work. Sometimes it's just a real quick you know,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: thirty swipes, ten swipes to get the angle right, and
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: we're we will swipe, swipe, check and we're out in
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: a minute. And you too, You always tune one wall. No,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: so on my personal call I brought here, I just
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: tuned the right side because I'm right handed caller. That's
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: the side I play most. Whether I'm I'm kind of
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: the I don't know what you call us the tomahawk chop,
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: like running it this way, or if I'm running it
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: kind of flat style. Um, so the right side is
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: what I play typically. But on every call we send out,
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: we try to tune them to two different turkeys left
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: and right, and make sure that both sides play um,
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: and and everybody's a little bit different. Um. I kind
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: of have a group of pre tuners that get me
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: close so that I'm not so that I'm not doing
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: the entire legwork myself, because five D seems like a
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: big number. Maybe a small number, but it seems like
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: it's a million when you're when it comes to like
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: five box calls needing tuned, UM, that number becomes exponentially
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: bigger than it really is one of your counting box calls.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: So if you want to touch something touched by the
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: actual Jason Phelps right now, pull a fingerprint off. Oh
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: I know all the mouth calls have been in his mouth?
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we pretun all those. That's a that's a
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: little call humor, that's no old that's an old call joke.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: The mouth calls have not been and felps his mouth.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: And then one of the things I do why we're
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: we've got the time is is like tuning a box call,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: like showing up here to Montana and what relative humidity
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: going to Washington to relative humidity. Um, there's a spring
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: under the screw which the box call pivots on that
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: can rattle around and rotate even in shipping or from
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: you may need to adjust that and so well, I
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: don't recommend you take your box call and get your
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: Phillips head screw driver out before you start to play it.
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: There is always some minor tweaking on that screw um
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: if the call seems to be too high pitch and
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: it doesn't break over, if you run the screw clockwise
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: and actually tighten it, you will start to get your
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: back end earlier, so you'll get the two you know,
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: the second part of the note before you're all the
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: way parallel. Um. If your call is too tight, then
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: you can loosen it and it will actually make the
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: call higher pitch. UM. So there's it's kind of as
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier, So the tunings me standing it and
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: then really adjusting the screw um for the box called
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: it we designed. Um A good starting place is the screw,
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: the the the brass crew all the way down and
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: then come out three quarters of a turn. It's kind
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: of going to get you in that ballpark, and we
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: started adjusting from there. UM. So like I always cringe,
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: it's people like getting out and tune in their calls
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: right off the bat. But that's if things are just
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: out of whack. Um, that's that's a good place to
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: get back to because just a slight turn, not even
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: a whole quarter turn on a box call huge, huge, Yeah,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: I mean the eighth of a turn would would change
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: the call when I was tuning them from not working
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: to speak in like Perry Turkey, it's crazy that a
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: little bit of just changing the angle that that leads
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: hitting hitting the boxes is what matters. No idea is that,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: like I would you know, my tendencies to get in there,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: I don't know, quarter half crank. I mean like I'll
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: get to the bottom of this and that's where it's.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: You know, you can nerd out on these things because
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: that eighth of a turn matters, or you know, the
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: difference in the wood matters, or you know, I got
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: to the point where, oh we got sap wood on
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: one side, we need to come out a little bit
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: more because it's a a bit tighter grain or whatever
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: it needs to be. Like you just start to learn.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: But um, yeah, those things were meant to be, you know,
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: tweaked a little bit by the end user based on location, humidity, um.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: And then we also want to note, um, the box
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: call is tough to run at least ours being you know,
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: pure wood doesn't have the waterproof chalk or anything. They're
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: they're kind of the first call that gets put away
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: in a plastic bag, you know, when the rain hits.
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: So that call kind of just it's a it's a
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: fair weather call, um, but it does have it's got
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: that distance. And I just love the sound of a
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: well tuned box call. Um. I know a lot of
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: guys like you and just trying to you know, when
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: you can't get nothing going on, just trying to get
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: a gobble too, because you just get a loud piercing,
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: you know, and you're just trying to try and something. Man,
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: they'll pull that, they'll pull that one out. Just try
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: to make something happen. Talk about the before we leave
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: the box call, that one thing that we wanted in
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: the design of it was compact yep. Box calls can
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: sometimes be unruly how big they are, Like they don't
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: even make pockets in your vest that will fit some
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: of the ones that are out there. But this one's
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: nice where you could just you know, putting your pant
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: pocket if you wanted to. Ye nine inches long and
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: about one one seven inches white, So it's it's a
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: nice compact side that that still gets a good high note. Um.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: You know, like you had mentioned, you got those old
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: fifteen inch like boat paddles that are just you know,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: you're out there just big old swipes and and they're
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: just tough to hunt with. Um, how many? How many
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: of those are we gonna have? The sky's the limit?
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: Like we just we we kind of hit with this
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: just like here is how many you want to pick up? Two?
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: We can We'll just we'll have to figure out a
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: better system, but we can or I'm gonna have to
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: hire somebody that's like a box call tuner. But we
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: know the first five have been um, yeah, and so
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: then we've got the pot calls. Um. I think I
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: don't know if you honest was a bigger um cheerleader
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: for the smaller pots, if it was Steve, But I
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: know we didn't go with a full size pot. No, No,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: I were either. We're in we're in a line together again.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: So you know most of your pots are like because
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: my turkey best has a small little the pocket heard
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: why we have a slightly smaller pot call just so
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Steve can fit these in his vest um. They're a
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: little bit smaller, like the way it feels in your head,
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: they're easier to hold. Um. There's a lot of good
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: reasons for it. And then we kind of went back
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: and forth, do we bring out a slate, do we
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: bring out of glass at crystal? And we ultimately ended
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: up on a slate over glass and then a UM
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: crystal over slate UM inside of a walnut pot. Yeah. Man,
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: that's the thing that explain it to people, how it's
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: got how they're not laminated. Where do you describe like
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: what how there's multiple surfaces that live inside there. So
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: what you need is is it's kind of that sound
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: chamber and is is you guys, nobody can see this,
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: but these both all have like dimensions that we were
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: as we were prototyping these um. The distance you set
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: that soundboard underneath the playing surface affects your breakover, it
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: affects your notes, it affects everything that this call produces.
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: And so the height you there's a pedestal that's actually
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: like on this call um that the sounding board is
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: glued to, and we change the height of that pedestal.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: The higher it is, the higher pitch, the lower it
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: is that the debt or the call gets UM. And
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: so we we need to set that um so that
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: we can I don't know what how you everybody's kind
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: of got the own their own place they play on
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: these but on the edges. Yeah, so the edge, I
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: would say on most calls, you probably come in like
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: a half inch off the edge, you know, kind of
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: as a And so that's where I played and kind
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: of tuned all these calls to where most people will
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: play on that perimeter, but you know, a little bit
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: off the edge. UM. And so you just kind of
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: trying to find two surfaces that complement each other. You know,
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: there's aluminum, there's there's you know, people use real wood
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: sound boards. UM. There's all kinds of of soundboards and
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: tops that you can play with UM. But crystal is
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: really consistent. It gives that sharper high note UM and
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: then it kind of comes down and hits that slate,
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: which kind of gives it a more mellow back end
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: versus the slate. It's got that mellow front end, but
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: then you use the glass to kind of give it
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: a little bit of of a pep. And so it's
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: we tested a bunch of these glass crystal slate, and
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: I think we just wanted to kind of stay with
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: the typical at least in the start. Um A good
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: glass slash crystal call and A and a good slate
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: call I always carry too. And that's that same configuration
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: because one I leave stuff laying out in the woods
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: and I gotta go back and try to find that
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: tree where I was sitting, UM, and that keeps me
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: busy while you know, I still have something in my
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: arsenal when I leave one laying out in the woods.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: And too. The rain issue is different because when you
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: get traditional like you know, slate like traditional, it's like
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: slate like out of the earth. Right when it gets wet,
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: it's hard to monkey with um glass, is uh? Or
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: you know the crystal service, you just like dry that
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: thing off, or if you have a waterproof striker or
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: an all weather striker, you can just keep playing that
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: thing right through. Yeah, so this little bit bulletproof, but
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: the crystal's wet as long as you're strikers a waterproof striker,
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: you see crystal with an aluminium like with an aluminium striker,
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: that doesn't matter. I mean, it's all easy to dry.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: It's that issue. I messed this too. I've even taken
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: like I've even held mine up just taking a lighter.
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: I just flick the lighter on there, and I thinks
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: back to brand new maybe yep, So you can you know,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: play that. And then, you know, preps a big thing.
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: Like we're sending these calls out and non prepped it's like,
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: well that's a huge part of you know, whatever way
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: you scratch or prep the call, you want to run
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: the striker in the opposite direction, you know, not with
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: the scratches. And so inside these calls it was very important.
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: I think you called me up and say, hey, we
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: need some sort of instructions in here. And so now
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: when we ship the calls, like we will give very
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: detailed instructions about the approximate location. You know, if it's
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: a crystal, you should take the you know, provided conditioning stone,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: if it's a slate, you know, use the you know,
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: provided scouring pad um, and we give exact locations on
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: on where to scratch the call up to get that
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: good sound. Yeah, like meaning if you open like if
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: you open up of these crystal calls and you take
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: your striker and you're like it doesn't work, like it
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: won't work. You have to create and a braided like
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: sanded spot and people will kind of hunt around on there,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: and it's not It's never gonna be the same for
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: two people, right like, because just everything about sort of
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: how you hold your hands, you configuration, how you work
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: the striker, it's never gonna be the same for two people.
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: So you're gonna you might explore around and find a
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: couple little different spots that you like, um to get
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: the sounds you want. And then on top of that,
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: you'll sort of learn what you can get away with
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: in terms of how frequently you need to refresh it.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: But things you've got to figure out. Two is if
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: you even if you have like if your hands are sweaty,
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: if you got you know, just your natural oil skin
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: oils on your fingers, you get that stuff on slate, man,
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: it's like tough. Yeah, And so you kind of learned
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: how to it's good just to learn how to do
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: it because it's not like you prep it once. And
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: then that if if you just you got this call
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: and you open it's like, oh it's pretty prepped. There's
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: still maintenance. Yep. When I sit down the woods in
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: the morning. Man, before I do anything, I'll be sitting
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: in the dark. Before I do anything, I'd go through
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: my little conditioning ritual to make sure that thing is
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: ready to start. Crank, get some noise on, and like
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: before you make a sound, like you know, the striker tip,
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: it'll eventually go up just from running through some of that.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: You know, you try to clean it off, but it's
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: like you know, you scratching your scou scour pad just
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: to make sure that things ready to go. So you
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: don't you know, slide as you mentioned earlier, when the
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: call is not conditioned. If that once that striker doesn't
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: have any bite anymore either, you'll just kind of slide
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: across the call and it it won't produce sounds. So
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: there's we provide all of that with these calls so
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: that they can be conditioned. Instructions and make sure that
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: you know the call war were one right, Yeah, you
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: get like slommy grease on the end of that strikes done. Yeah.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: I don't understand when my kids take one or run
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: around the house for an hour, it never works. I
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: think it's just I think it's just a greasy little
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: hands that they're done for like, but yeah, you gotta
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: take like a mill off the end of that striker
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: to get it back to life. I think they got
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: it up their nose and stuff. I don't know what
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: they do to them and they make them that work.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: So yeah, the conditioning thing, and like the crystal call, man,
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: it's got like it's it's beautiful. It's got like the
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: sound board has a design. Um, it's like it's collateral damage.
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: I mean, you're gonna obscure the crystal and obscure the
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: thing when you start monkeying with getting your thing. The
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: slate is way different and that the same thing you
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: used to wash your dishes. But you still gotta you
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: still gotta take care of the surface. Yeah. But one thing,
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: I mean, these specific calls, like we laser etch the slate,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: like they're gonna they're gonna get damaged in the in
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: the prep of this call, no matter what you do. Um,
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: So don't you know, just just scratch over the top
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: of the meat eater phelps name or across the bird
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: um to get that prepped. Um. You know it's not
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: meant to last forever for me personally. Um, in my
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: kind of calling, you know, wanting to learn how to
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: like kill turkey's good, I wind up having I think
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: in terms of labor versus output, practice versus output. I
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: had the greatest advances learning how on pot calls, where, um,
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: you know a box call, they're great, there's like very
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: good turkey hunters just use box calls, right, But they're
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: they're they're loud, which is one of the big selling points.
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: Like vlue. You know, they have a high volume. Um,
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: and some people can get a lot of some people
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: can get developed quite a vocabulary with it, but anyone
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: could pick one up and start making like a loud yelp.
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: Not anyone. Most people learning the rest of the vocabulary
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: is a little harder, and learning how to do just
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: subtle sounds like you know, you got a bird hung
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: up at fifty yards and you can't see them good,
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: and you're sort of trying to make something happen before
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: something goes wrong. It might not be the best bet
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: just to be like, yeah, you're just kind of telling
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: it you're here, right and trying to keep it around. UM.
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: I think that in the time I spent massing with it,
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: I was more quickly. I was more able to learn
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: how to do the basic calls like here's a yelp,
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: here's a clock right, here's a purr on that on
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: that medium, over other things. And then I in my mind,
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: for me like the real master, like the thing that's
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: like the most alluring because you learn how the mouth call,
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: and you could do the entire vocabulary and never move
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: your hand. But that's like the kind of thing you
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: got to dedicate yourself to. Yeah, you know where the
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: pot call, as you mentioned, you can pick that up
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: and I think anybody can run it within about five
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: minutes of an instructions or at least starting to sound
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: like a turkey like the mouth call takes some some dedication. No,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: you gotta be like, you know what, man, I'm gonna
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: spend years like I don't mind, I'm gonna drive around
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: in my car, drive around in my truck, and I'm
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: gonna learn how to do this, and then when you
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: get there, you're there. Yea, you know, but it's a
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: journey to learn how I mean. And and you know
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: the crazy thing is that's being guys and turkey call
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: guys like I don't know what it is, and I
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: wish I could figure out what it is, but we
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: get got hey, I can run this out call, but
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: I can't run a tricky Callor hey, I can run
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: the tricky calls, but I can't run your out calls.
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: And it's like, you know, but ultimately, as you alluded
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: to a little bit earlier, is you know, these calls.
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: We wanted design calls that were easy to use, but
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: then also calls at the very experienced caller would be
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: you know, happy to use. And so it's it's tough
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: to kind of strike that, you know, and we develop
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: it through materials, through the cuts, um, all of that.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: And so ultimately we brought out four Turkey calls. They
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: come into three pack, which is yours, which is a
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Jake Break Steve, Steve and Ella Jake break. Love that
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: term Jake break yep. Um, we've got love them, Jakes,
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: We've got you. This is which Jakes have saved a
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: lot of Turkey hunts. Man. They eat the same two,
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: don't they. Yeah. And my kids this year, like he's
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: you know, he had his first Turkey season last year,
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: and um, I he'll be this will be a second
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: Turkey season depending on where I go. My daughter will
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: have her first Turkey season this year. And uh, you know,
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: I know that the jake's out there will hopefully help
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: them get over that initial hump. Yeah, no, jake's are fun.
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: I haven't introduced to them the idea that it's not
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: the perfect turkey that'll be they'll be happy with the jake. Uh.
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: And then so Jannice is lat via ego. It's the
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: heaviest call in the group. Um, he used a little
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: thicker latex. Explain that. So what you get with the
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: heavier latex is a little more volume, a little more
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: long distance calling, a little heavier cutting. And then just
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: by adding um, heavier latex, you also get a little
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: bit deeper turkey. You know, an older boss hand. Um sound,
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: it's a it's we need more air, a little more air.
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: It's not gonna light up, you know, as you mentioned earlier,
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: like if you want to do a little soft purr,
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: it might you know, that perr might be mid the
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: loud volume by time you get it to to fire off.
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Where you know, like with your call or the meater's
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: choice or the easy cluck, or you could do really
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: subtle light clucks. You can still do it. A good
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: color can still do it on your honest's call. It's
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: just gonna be it's almost to that box, like if
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: you want to reach the Turkey three canyons over, Like
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: you can yelp on that thing and get that volume
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: out of it. But you find that people can generally
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: learn easier on the lighter latex typically. Um, it's just
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: they get sound and so they they're they're maybe not frustrated.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: Now that doesn't necessarily mean learning. Like you might have
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: just a heavy mouth guy that just wants to put
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: all the air and as lung as the the call,
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: and so even though he's not an experienced caller, he
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: may preferrer honest is over. And that's where it's like
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: it's all over the board, like trying to find you know,
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: we get there the email, Hey I'm a new hunter.
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: What should I use? And it's like I'd like to
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: put you in this for eight, but you might be
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: the complete opposite and want something else. That's why it
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: gets good to have, you know, to get a handful
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: of at once and just start messing with them. Yeah
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: U so yeah, he has got a cutter's cut on it.
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: Um really really raspy. Um. I like that call. And
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: then the latex should also withstand that heavier calling yeah,
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: a little bit longer before it kind of plays out.
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: It's a little more durable UM where you know Steve,
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: Steve's call UM has a lighter piece of latex on
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: top with what we consider a combo cut with some
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: proof as you're playing read, so it's a little lighter,
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: but it achieves that higher pitch easier, UM without putting
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: a bunch of air to it. UM. And then the
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: meter's choice once again, we're using prof as the backing read,
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: the playing read, and then we've got um. It's kind
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: of a modified bat wing is what we're calling it
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: something UM so really easy that and then we still
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: get that rasp out of it. And then the single
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: call by itself is is easy clucker where we put
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: a ghost cut in it and uh, really really easy
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: to use, easy to get your kiki runs out of
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: and stuff your immature turkeys. Um. But it's typically the
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: most easy for a new caller to run uh dirt.
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: I didn't know, like you don't even strike me as this,
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: but um current had it down that you were a
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: saxophone player. Not a lot of people know that about me.
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: It's like you're Chevy Chase of Bill Clinton Man Bill Clinton,
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: Hey my saxophone. Let me show you something. Yeah, growing
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: up in a little town of Weipe, I was in
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: the band from junior high school through my sophomore year,
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: and I sold my sacks and about a three thirty
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: eight wind meg. Does uh that be a read instrument
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: and a diaphragm call being like a read? Um? Right? Yeah?
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: Like we're like, oh, this is easy. I used to
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: play saxophone. Um, it's different. Yeah, but it's there's some
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: some weird nuances between diaphragms and and saxophone reads. Uh,
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: quality construction. Like if you buy the cheap sax reads,
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: they don't seem to work as good. You just can't
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: get the sweet sweet tones and melodies and something you know,
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: brand X brand whatever. A lot of guys will kind
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: of pick up a diaphragm and be like, ah, first
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: time in their mouth, doesn't sound good. I can't do it.
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: But experimenting a little bit, you you find that not
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: all diaphragms are built the same. Same with saxophone reads.
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: One of my buddies would lend me a read here,
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: try one of these. You'd have a really nice Rico
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: read or something, and I'd throw that baby in and
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: I was like, Wow, all of a sudden just got
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: way better. Yeah. So I kind of feel the same
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: thing about diaphragms, whether it's Turkey calls, elk calls, Like
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: there's a quality issue, not all not all created equals. Yeah,
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: some of them, like those sacks reads would absorb water
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: really fast and then they just kind of fall apart.
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: So I don't know if they're making them out of
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: cheap bamboo or or what, but there's definitely a difference.
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: Do you play anymore? I haven't played one since sophomore
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: in high school. I bet I could probably still play
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: one if I had one in front of me. Um,
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: how long does it take to put when you guys
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: decided making new call holls, how long does it actually
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: take to get it right before you can start selling
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: it to people? It just really depends, um, you know,
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: whether it's a box calls or a little more finicky.
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: You know. So if we're gonna bring a new ballox
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: call out, and and this is where I don't know
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: if we want to talk production versus like if I
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: was to build one is way different. Um, Like my
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: whole thought process, the whole machining process, Like I used
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: to build box calls and pot calls out my shop,
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: Like I would chuck, you know, the back of ours
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: don't have a hole in the center. I would drill
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: a hole through any piece of walnut, spent it down
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: to a circle, you know, build the shape. And I
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: sold lots of pot calls back in the day. I
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: built a couple of boxes where I would you know,
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: hand chisel out the sides and sand everything down. Yeah,
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: and so I had built box calls. But getting your
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: mind right to build five hundred a thousand, two thousand
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: is a completely different animal. Like you need to be
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: on the conservative side so that when you do get
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: that weird piece of wood. Um. So like, for instance,
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: the walnut we bought is a lot more of a
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: pain in my ass than the purple heart. The purple
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: hearts all straight as an arrow, everything's perfect where the
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: wall and that was kind of all over the place,
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: and so you're like, you know, you had to mess
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: with it or each one had to be tuned. Um.
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: You know, in the future, I think we will I
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: more select grade of lumbers so we're not dealing with
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: knots and issues, especially when it comes to calls. You know,
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: some of these calls are beautiful because they do have
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: a swirl here there. Um. But for for um, you know,
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: music instruments, Um, we should probably stick to the But
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: I would say, now with with everything we we know, um,
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: the designs we've got, um, you know, if we were
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: to do something new, would probably you know, a month
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: or two, get the materials, make some changes and get
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: something out Um these I'll tell you. I want to
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: tell you why I'm asking, But now you're making seems
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: like it's not a good idea. I want to do
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: a thing where we find a tree that we really like,
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: shop that tree down right, and then go through take
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: people through the whole process, remill it, dry it right,
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: and then out of that will come box calls. All right,
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: we could do that, no problem, and you could get
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: a box call that you've watched it from the tree
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: to the call. Yep, I think we do a series
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: of calls that comes one tree. How many would we
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: get off one tree, a black walnut, if it's old enough,
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: A lot, uh, a lot of you could do. You
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: could do this whole production round out of one big
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: black walnut, just the place I think we have in Seth.
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: You said he would be able to grade because he
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: was trained up in forestry. Do you know that? So
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: I want structural selector bat Well, that's the money tree
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: usually high value. But it's like to tell the guy
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: that we're getting it triple triple stumpage. That would be
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: timber timber trespass. Uh Seth worked on a thing one
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: time to where stolen trees explained this stuth. Yeah, we
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: when we were when I was in college, we had
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: a we did like this. It was I forget what
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: class was in, but we had a lab where we like,
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: there was a timber it was an actual timber trespass. Um,
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: but we like mimic the timber trestpass where someone like
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: a logger had gone on to the neighboring property and
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: cut a bunch of trees and then you have to
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: go in and like measure indentations in the soil when
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: the tree was dropped and just trying to figure out
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: how much volume was taking. Yeah, it's like, um, um,
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: what's that word I'm looking for? Damn it. It's like
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: a word about crime forensic. That's the world yea, and
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: write a book about that. If you're hearing this, you
