Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: If you're listening yesterday. There was a load of above
- 0:01Speaker 1: and talk back yesterday about the Conservation Amendment Bill, and
- 0:04Speaker 1: it brought to light three issues for me after listening
- 0:07Speaker 1: to a very generic piece of talkback. Firstly, how bad
- 0:11Speaker 1: much of our laws and that stems back to how
- 0:13Speaker 1: it's written in processed. Secondly, that many concerned organizations looking
- 0:18Speaker 1: at you, forrest and bird they are not afraid to scare,
- 0:20Speaker 1: monger and exaggerate to win their way. And thirdly, how
- 0:23Speaker 1: many New Zealanders wily purely on social media to keep
- 0:26Speaker 1: informed on the issues of the day. So for those
- 0:28Speaker 1: who were spooked by the news that land in the
- 0:30Speaker 1: conservation estate could be swapped or sold, they only had
- 0:32Speaker 1: to do a bit of a Google search and they
- 0:34Speaker 1: could find a myriad of expert opinion. For instance, Science
- 0:39Speaker 1: Monitor has loads of opinion on it. Read all that
- 0:42Speaker 1: for many of the people they talked to, much of
- 0:44Speaker 1: the new law updates were sorely needed for a piece
- 0:47Speaker 1: of legislation that was forty years old. On Newsroom, one
- 0:51Speaker 1: expert planner pointed out the sales and swaps of conservation
- 0:53Speaker 1: land already happens, and all this amendment does is make
- 0:58Speaker 1: the process less, clunky. He also wondered why the reality
- 1:02Speaker 1: and the rhetoric was so different, and that lies at
- 1:04Speaker 1: the feet of groups like Greenpeace and Forests and Bird
- 1:07Speaker 1: who made the whole story about sixty percent is going
- 1:09Speaker 1: to be sold, which is not true. All agree it's
- 1:12Speaker 1: a badly written law that's been rushed and is currently
- 1:14Speaker 1: before a select committee with a tight deadline of July
- 1:17Speaker 1: the second. The way we rushed through our law was
- 1:19Speaker 1: a complaint made last week by Sir Jeffrey Palmer, and
- 1:22Speaker 1: we're writing bad law because it's also rushed. Others pointed
- 1:26Speaker 1: out that it takes power away from a minister, which
- 1:28Speaker 1: was a check and balance. That's a concern, But the
- 1:32Speaker 1: whole thing amplified how so many are getting the information
- 1:35Speaker 1: from bias social media, how so many people do not
- 1:38Speaker 1: realize the full story, and how so much of our law,
- 1:41Speaker 1: as I said before, is badly written. So a word
- 1:44Speaker 1: two of advice to the government and Tama Portaker about
- 1:47Speaker 1: this piece of legislation, the Conservation of Endment Bilt. You
- 1:50Speaker 1: have failed to explain this. People have got the wrong
- 1:54Speaker 1: end of the stick. They don't understand the new ones,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and perhaps you might want to take your foot Off
- 1:58Speaker 1: the Gas from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live
- 2:02Speaker 1: to News Talks at B from five am weekdays, or
