- Lucas: Hey everyone, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo — I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Episode 13, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, time flies. Today we're doing something a little different — a tiny story set in a bakery. Luna: Ooh, I love bakeries! What kind of phrases will we hear? Lucas: Nothing new — just recycling phrases from past episodes. Greetings, how are you, please and thank you, goodbye. All the essentials. Luna: Perfect. So we can just relax and follow along. Lucas: Exactly. So picture this: early morning, the sun is just coming up. You walk into a small bakery in Addis Ababa. The baker is behind the counter, flour on his apron, fresh bread on the shelves. Luna: Yeah, I can almost smell it. Lucas: You step up and say — ሰላም, እንደምን አደርክ. Luna: Right — ሰላም, እንደምን አደርክ. That's good morning, right? Lucas: Exactly. So the baker smiles and says, ሰላም, እንደምን አደርክ — and then he adds, እንዴት ነህ? Luna: Oh, how are you. So he's friendly. Lucas: Very. And you reply, ጥሩ ነው, አመሰግናለሁ. Fine, thank you. Luna: Let me try — ጥሩ ነው, አመሰግናለሁ. Lucas: That was smooth. So now you order. You see a loaf of bread — you point and say, እባክህ, አንድ ዳቦ. Luna: Wait — እባክህ is please, and አንድ is one, and ዳቦ is bread — so please, one bread. Lucas: Exactly. The baker nods and says, አዎ — yes. Luna: So he hands you the bread. What do you say? Lucas: You say አመሰግናለሁ — thank you. He might say ምንም አይደለም — you're welcome — but that's for another day. Luna: Got it. And then you leave? Lucas: You pick up your bread and say, ደህና ሁን, በቀር አይተህ. Luna: Goodbye, see you later. I love that phrase. Lucas: So let me run through the whole scene quickly. You walk in — ሰላም, እንደምን አደርክ. Baker says እንዴት ነህ? You say ጥሩ ነው, አመሰግናለሁ. Then እባክህ, አንድ ዳቦ. He says አዎ. You say አመሰግናለሁ. Then ደህና ሁን, በቀር አይተህ. Luna: Okay, I want to try the whole thing. Ready? Lucas: Go for it. Luna: ሰላም, እንደምን አደርክ. Lucas: Nice. Luna: እንዴት ነህ? — ጥሩ ነው, አመሰግናለሁ. እባክህ, አንድ ዳቦ. Lucas: Perfect. Luna: አዎ — አመሰግናለሁ. ደህና ሁን, በቀር አይተህ. Lucas: You did it! That was a whole conversation. Luna: It felt so natural. I actually imagined standing there. Lucas: That's the goal — to get you using these phrases without thinking. Luna: And I noticed we used እባክህ, which we learned in episode 6, and አንድ from episode 10. Lucas: Right. And ዳቦ is a new word, but you picked it up instantly. Luna: It's easy when it's in a story. So can we do one more time, just the bakery scene? Lucas: Sure. I'll be the baker, you be the customer. Luna: Okay. Here I go. ሰላም, እንደምን አደርክ. Lucas: ሰላም, እንደምን አደርክ. እንዴት ነህ? Luna: ጥሩ ነው, አመሰግናለሁ. እባክህ, አንድ ዳቦ. Lucas: አዎ. እነሆ — here you go. Luna: አመሰግናለሁ. ደህና ሁን, በቀር አይተህ. Lucas: ደህና ሁን, በቀር አይተህ. See, you can have a whole interaction. Luna: That was so satisfying. I feel ready to visit a bakery in Ethiopia.
