- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is.
- 0:15Thursday, it is the 23rd of May and you have tapped on play.
- 0:20And here I am so you and I can read another proverb together.
- 0:25That's what we're doing at the moment, reading through these
- 0:27first nine chapters of the book of Proverbs.
- 0:29And boy, oh boy, you know, when we think about wisdom, we think
- 0:33of stately people speaking gently and quietly with
- 0:38philosophical terms. But boy, when you, when you look
- 0:42at the Hebrew version of wisdom, it is just really quite
- 0:47confronting language that cuts through to the heart of it.
- 0:50The Jewish religion really is not, I mean it, it is deeply
- 0:54philosophical. But the language and the the way
- 0:56that they understand the world is very tactile and very
- 1:00physical and fleshy and human and present.
- 1:04And so when you have this author writing this wisdom literature,
- 1:09you know, he uses this really evocative language of the
- 1:12immoral woman. And although the lusty
- 1:15behaviours and thoughts compared with the refined Lady of wisdom
- 1:20and he really draws that parallel in a way that we just
- 1:23can't miss, it is so obvious. And today is another day where
- 1:27he continues to speak using this analogy about wisdom.
- 1:33So we will listen, and we will hear with their ears, attuned
- 1:36for what we can learn about wisdom, wisdom of our fidelity
- 1:41to God and all that He offers us.
- 1:44So you ready, friends? Ready to read it?
- 1:47Meet who? Let's Read Together.
- 1:49Proverbs Chapter 7. Follow my advice, my son.
- 2:04Always treasure my commands. Obey my commands and live guard
- 2:09my instructions. As you guard your own eyes, tie
- 2:13them on your fingers as a reminder.
- 2:14Write them deep within your heart.
- 2:17Love wisdom like a sister. Make insight a beloved member of
- 2:22your family. Let them protect you from an
- 2:25affair with an immoral woman, from listening to the flattery
- 2:29of a promiscuous woman while I was at the window of my house,
- 2:33looking through the curtain, I saw some naive young men, and
- 2:37one in particular who lacked common sense.
- 2:40He was crossing the street near the House of an immoral woman,
- 2:43strolling down the path by her house.
- 2:46It was a twilight and the evening as deep darkness fell,
- 2:50the woman approached him. Seductively dressed and sly of
- 2:54heart, she was the brash, rebellious type.
- 2:57Never content to stay at home, she is often in the streets and
- 3:01markets, soliciting at every corner.
- 3:04She threw her arms around him and kissed him.
- 3:06And with the brazen look she said I just made my peace
- 3:10offerings and fulfilled my vows. You're the one I was looking
- 3:14for. I came out to find you and here
- 3:17you are. My bed is spread with beautiful
- 3:20blankets, with coloured sheets of Egyptian linen.
- 3:24I've perfumed my bed with Mer, Aloes and cinnamon.
- 3:28Come, let's drink our fill of love until morning.
- 3:32Let's enjoy each other's caresses, for my husband is not
- 3:35home. He's away on a long trip.
- 3:38He has taken a wallet full of money with him and won't return
- 3:41until later this month. So she seduced him with her
- 3:45pretty speech and enticed him with her flattery.
- 3:48He followed her at once, like an ox going to the slaughter.
- 3:53He was like a stag caught in a trap, awaiting the arrow that
- 3:57would Pierce its heart. He was like a bird flying into a
- 4:01snare, little knowing it would cost him his life.
- 4:04So listen to me, my sons, and pay attention to my words.
- 4:09Don't let your hearts stray away toward her.
- 4:12Don't wander down her wayward path, for she has been the ruin
- 4:17of many. Many men have been her victims.
- 4:20Her house is the road to the grave.
- 4:23Her bedroom is the den of death, my Lord.
- 4:37What a graphic picture of temptation.
- 4:41We hear the author warning his son, warning his students not to
- 4:46be drawn into that, but to stay true.
- 4:52Our Lord, help lift our eyes from the temptations around us
- 4:55in this life. The things that would draw us
- 4:58away from you. The things that would test our
- 5:00fidelity to you. Draw our eyes up.
- 5:05Draw our gaze to Jesus so that we can see Him standing there
- 5:11with his arms wide open, and that through him we can feel the
- 5:16acceptance and the love of her Father and feel the warm embrace
- 5:23and presence of the Holy Spirit. Draw us back to you, a
- 5:29wonderful, kind and loving God who will fill everyone of our
- 5:33needs. Now we pray all of this in your
- 5:37name, Jesus, Ah, man.
