- 1:56Speaker 1: Pete Rock Peace Peace, What up bro man? And listen
- 2:00Speaker 1: Pete Right, let me tell you something. When I was
- 2:01Speaker 1: a kid, when you dropped your album, I think it
- 2:04Speaker 1: was the Soul brother Brother Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, what
- 2:08Speaker 1: was it? What was the album? You dropped your solo
- 2:10Speaker 1: album and it was like ninety eight ninety nine, uh
- 2:13Speaker 1: A Survivor, Soul Survivor. Yeah, that was the first time.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Like I'm thirty three, so at that time I was
- 2:19Speaker 1: like twelve or some shit. But that was the first time, right,
- 2:26Speaker 1: So I had come up on your ship without even
- 2:29Speaker 1: knowing about the cl smooth shit, right, So I like
- 2:31Speaker 1: had to go back and dig in. But I just
- 2:33Speaker 1: want to give your flowers. Man, You're a legend. Bro.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Welcome podcast. Thank you, boss man. You know what I'm saying.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I love hip hop, brother, I love what I do. Man.
- 2:42Speaker 1: You know it's as simple as that. Man, I met
- 2:45Speaker 1: you for the first time. I met you backstage at
- 2:48Speaker 1: Rock the Bells with did you I have a picture
- 2:49Speaker 1: with you and DJ Premiere Oh Okay, which is one
- 2:52Speaker 1: of the most legendary photos I've ever taken. To have
- 2:55Speaker 1: both of you guys together in a photo is a
- 2:58Speaker 1: big deal, yo, talk about let's let's get in real quick.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Just just you know, you're dropping a new project. Now
- 3:05Speaker 1: it's all instrumentals, right, yeah, all instrumentals, no samples. I
- 3:09Speaker 1: got a band now. Shout out to the Soul Brothers, Doro,
- 3:13Speaker 1: Jan Nick, Christopher McBride, Mono Neon, Jermaine Holmes, Marcus Machado,
- 3:19Speaker 1: Big Yuki. The list goes on, man, you know, I like,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I'm trying to be one of those great seventies bands,
- 3:29Speaker 1: like like Cooon the Gang and uh right, it's it's
- 3:33Speaker 1: crazy to hear you say you're putting out an instrumental
- 3:35Speaker 1: album with no samples. Yep, no samples at all. I mean, listen,
- 3:41Speaker 1: a producer is a producer, man. You gotta be able
- 3:44Speaker 1: to make music too, like without the sampling, you know
- 3:46Speaker 1: what I'm saying. And these are all my ideas with
- 3:49Speaker 1: the band just playing them over. Yeah, why why go
- 3:54Speaker 1: the instrumental route as opposed to I don't know, but
- 3:57Speaker 1: just your pete rock. You could get verses from whoever
- 3:59Speaker 1: you want. You've done it before, so like, why just
- 4:03Speaker 1: do the full instrumental route on this go round? Because
- 4:06Speaker 1: I want people to really fill the music without no
- 4:09Speaker 1: noise on it at first, you know what I'm saying, money,
- 4:13Speaker 1: because that's what happened with Donuts With Dyla, it was like, yeah,
- 4:16Speaker 1: I don't even want to hear anybody rapping on donuts.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You just want to press play on it and just
- 4:21Speaker 1: vibe and just vibe, because you know what music is
- 4:24Speaker 1: a vibe. It's medicine, it's heal, it's a healer. You
- 4:26Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. So that's my job first, is
- 4:30Speaker 1: to do that for the people. You know what I mean.
- 4:32Speaker 1: And you know you can bring the rappers in anytime.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'm ready to do something like that, you know what
- 4:36Speaker 1: I'm saying. I got a whole bunch of that coming
- 4:38Speaker 1: out soon with other rappers and with my own team.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Who do you have? Okay, I want to get get
- 4:46Speaker 1: to a few hours of your career. But out of
- 4:49Speaker 1: the new generation, who who's got your attention? Chris Alda facts?
- 4:58Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying a lot of other people too,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you know Action Bronson, you know all them type of cats,
- 5:06Speaker 1: Freddie Gibbs, you know what I'm saying. Like people like that,
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'm I'm that's that's that's my wave, That's my wave
- 5:14Speaker 1: right there? Have you tapped in with the core day kid?
- 5:18Speaker 1: Not yet? Know you got I feel like you guys,
- 5:20Speaker 1: would you guys would make some beautiful music together? Man,
- 5:25Speaker 1: your phone just just dipped out. You there, you're back, Okay,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you're back. I'm back. My phone died, man, I figured
- 5:37Speaker 1: that's what happened. Yeah, I'm on my other phone now.
- 5:40Speaker 1: All good man. Look, Pete Rock, we were talking about
- 5:43Speaker 1: some of the newer artists that you were working with.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You were saying, you love Griselda, Freddy Gibbs, have you
- 5:48Speaker 1: You and Gibbs haven't worked together yet, not yet, but
- 5:51Speaker 1: we're talking about it. We've been talking about it. You
- 5:54Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. Yeah, No, I'm you know, if
- 5:57Speaker 1: it happens, that would be dope. You know what I'm saying.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Right now, I'm more concentrated on because I see cats
- 6:05Speaker 1: as busy. So I'm doing, you know, my own stuff
- 6:08Speaker 1: with my artists. Amir, who's gonna be really me? Amir? Okay? Yeah? Hey?
- 6:15Speaker 1: You know what the album I really loved was the
- 6:17Speaker 1: record you and Smoke did it put out together? Yes,
- 6:21Speaker 1: Don't Smoke Rock. Don't Smoke Rock? Was crazy? And then
- 6:25Speaker 1: you put the instrumental album out. What would you guys
- 6:28Speaker 1: do a sequel to that? Of course? Has that been
- 6:33Speaker 1: talked about it all. Yeah, we talked about it. Yeah,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I think I think that in the Smith and Western Shore.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I feel like, like, you know, it's funny because you
- 6:42Speaker 1: got you've you've been doing these joint projects, and I
- 6:44Speaker 1: feel like this year and last year we're really kind
- 6:47Speaker 1: of like the wave of like artists fully tapping in
- 6:49Speaker 1: with a producer. You know, hit Boy did his thing
- 6:51Speaker 1: with Benny Fred did his thing with Alchemist. You know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: Conray did something with Alchemist. Who's somebody who you would
- 6:58Speaker 1: like to just zone out with and do a whole
- 7:00Speaker 1: album with that you haven't yet? Ghost Face? Ghost Face?
- 7:06Speaker 1: Oh yep, that would be legendary. Well we have you
- 7:12Speaker 1: have you guys spoken about that? Ever? We talked like
- 7:17Speaker 1: a lot. We talked like a lot all the time,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and you know what you have to see, man, ghost
- 7:25Speaker 1: Face would be insane. Yeah, he's my personal top five. Ever,
- 7:30Speaker 1: my personal you know what I'm saying. Like yet my
- 7:34Speaker 1: personal list too. There's two lists, right, there's like your
- 7:37Speaker 1: personal list and then like the list that you you know,
- 7:39Speaker 1: the like. So when people be like, what's your top
- 7:42Speaker 1: five or top ten? Man? I got top twenty, man,
- 7:45Speaker 1: It's like, what are we talking about? Were we talking
- 7:47Speaker 1: about like everyone's list or like my favorites, because there's
- 7:51Speaker 1: like a difference my security list, my most important list
- 7:55Speaker 1: has Jada kiss on it and ghost Face. That's fair gods, Okay, okay, yeah,
- 8:02Speaker 1: ghost Face the most consistent, uh, one of the most
- 8:06Speaker 1: consistent rappers ever discography wise, album for album he could
- 8:10Speaker 1: go against it's like him and yeah, yep, so do
- 8:14Speaker 1: And I know, like if we ever work together, it
- 8:17Speaker 1: would be so easy. Is it easy to work with
- 8:23Speaker 1: Pete Rock? Yeah? How fucking yeah, I just the most
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know what, you know what, you know what, It's
- 8:31Speaker 1: easy to work with me when you respect me. Okay,
- 8:35Speaker 1: So you got to make sure that the artists understand, see,
- 8:38Speaker 1: because I think that that's an important thing to say,
- 8:41Speaker 1: because if someone's gonna do something with Pete Rock, they
- 8:44Speaker 1: gotta understand it's a full collaborative process. You're Pete Rock.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Yeah, you can't. You can't
- 8:48Speaker 1: be disrespectful to my, to my to the way I do,
- 8:54Speaker 1: you know, to the way I'm great right, Because I
- 8:58Speaker 1: do feel like like guys like yourself, guys like Primo.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I wish that there was more of records like the
- 9:06Speaker 1: record you do with Dizza. I wish that there was more.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Like I like, I can't tell you how excited I
- 9:11Speaker 1: was when you did the joy with with with Ye
- 9:17Speaker 1: and when you had when when you were in that
- 9:19Speaker 1: pocket where where Ye was doing the Good Friday Records
- 9:21Speaker 1: and you were working with Kanye. Yeah, I was just
- 9:25Speaker 1: so excited because I'm like, this is what I want
- 9:27Speaker 1: to hear Pete Rock and Kanye. Why didn't happen sooner?
- 9:30Speaker 1: You know what I mean? It would have, but you
- 9:34Speaker 1: know like I look at it like you could just
- 9:36Speaker 1: set it down right there. Thank you, Thank you. I
- 9:38Speaker 1: look at it like, you know, like he's from my
- 9:42Speaker 1: school and that was bound to happen regardless, you know
- 9:45Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Talk talk about that era where you
- 9:48Speaker 1: were tapping in with Ya and and and the Joys.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Those are my two favorite Kanye versus probably ever. Thank
- 9:54Speaker 1: you when he said, uh, the Holy Trinity, a bad
- 9:59Speaker 1: bitch and a bag some hennessy, I see my only enemy.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Let me tell y'all something about Kanye on the lyric
- 10:07Speaker 1: tip Homeboy's nice. He's super nice that I will not
- 10:13Speaker 1: never take that away from him. And he's very talented,
- 10:16Speaker 1: you know, nah, for sure. Man. Was there any record
- 10:22Speaker 1: you did with you that we didn't hear? Yeah, I
- 10:26Speaker 1: did a I laid about eight beats, but I think
- 10:29Speaker 1: he might have went in on more than just one, right,
- 10:34Speaker 1: but I never heard it, and I doubt if he's
- 10:37Speaker 1: using anything. But you know what I mean, right right, right,
- 10:41Speaker 1: right right, all right? So so you got the you
- 10:45Speaker 1: put the band together. We're getting, uh, some some great instrumentals,
- 10:49Speaker 1: some great music, uh from you? The person who haven't
- 10:55Speaker 1: let's talk about you, and and and and and and
- 10:57Speaker 1: why why haven't we seen a verses with Pete? I
- 11:03Speaker 1: feel like I feel like you're the obvious guy to
- 11:05Speaker 1: do one. As far as the producer, I wouldn't mind
- 11:08Speaker 1: seeing you an alchemist. I mean, I put it out
- 11:12Speaker 1: there already, man, But nobody's biting, so it's all good.
- 11:15Speaker 1: How how how dope was it for you as a
- 11:17Speaker 1: fan of the culture to see there is a primo battle.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I liked it. I liked it, you know what I'm saying.
- 11:24Speaker 1: But I just felt that there was a lot of
- 11:27Speaker 1: things that needed to be rectified with the way it
- 11:31Speaker 1: was coming over the Instagram. And oh, definitely, yeah, there
- 11:34Speaker 1: was some that was before they were doing them in
- 11:36Speaker 1: person and it was a big production. Yeah yeah, you
- 11:39Speaker 1: get out in and out, and you know, it was
- 11:42Speaker 1: a lot of it was just a lot of stuff
- 11:44Speaker 1: that needs to be fixed. You know what I'm saying.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Let me ask you this, Pete. Do you feel like
- 11:49Speaker 1: you're underappreciated as when it comes to hip hop overall?
- 11:53Speaker 1: Do you feel like you get your flowers you deserve?
- 11:56Speaker 1: I feel like I get my flowers sometimes. You know
- 11:59Speaker 1: what I'm saying. You know, I really I really don't care, man,
- 12:03Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, because I love music. Regardless
- 12:06Speaker 1: of how people were people on the place, I don't
- 12:09Speaker 1: care about that shit. You know what I'm saying. What
- 12:11Speaker 1: I care about is what's already up there in the sky.
- 12:14Speaker 1: It's already everything I've done, man, is on top tip.
- 12:17Speaker 1: So I'm not mad at nobody or nothing or Cat's
- 12:21Speaker 1: not recognizing you know my talent. You know what I'm saying.
- 12:25Speaker 1: But you know, real people know what time it is.
- 12:28Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. That's real people, Real people
- 12:31Speaker 1: know what it is. I'm not bothered by none of
- 12:34Speaker 1: this shit because I have real talent. Yo. What I
- 12:37Speaker 1: appreciate about you is you're extremely unfiltered on Twitter. Yeah,
- 12:41Speaker 1: your Twitter is going up, Yeah, because you know, I'm
- 12:48Speaker 1: just trying to show people that, you know, there's a
- 12:50Speaker 1: real side to me and that you know, even with
- 12:53Speaker 1: the disrespect, I really don't care about that. You know
- 12:55Speaker 1: what I'm saying. I'm saying things for me and for
- 12:58Speaker 1: people who agree with or disagree in a respectful way,
- 13:02Speaker 1: not in a disrespectful way, because you could disagree, but
- 13:05Speaker 1: you don't got to be disrespectful. I think that that's
- 13:08Speaker 1: something that we've lost sight of, right, is that you
- 13:13Speaker 1: if you know, if you don't see eye to eye
- 13:16Speaker 1: with someone, I feel like in twenty twenty, is automatically
- 13:19Speaker 1: an enemy or really really contentious conversation. Like you could
- 13:24Speaker 1: be texting somebody and somebody will take you take it
- 13:28Speaker 1: totally the wrong way because they can't see a facial
- 13:31Speaker 1: expression or you know, they assume that you're getting at them,
- 13:35Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Even like, even like if
- 13:40Speaker 1: you have any sort like you know, I don't fuck
- 13:43Speaker 1: with Donald Trump, right, I don't. Yeah, yeah, right. I
- 13:47Speaker 1: voted for Joe Biden at the same time I have
- 13:51Speaker 1: my critiques of Joe Biden too. It's like you did
- 13:54Speaker 1: I see on your I saw, I saw some things
- 13:56Speaker 1: you've said. But what's crazy is you can't say those
- 13:58Speaker 1: things out loud without without people coming at you like
- 14:02Speaker 1: bro like yeah, Like It's it's almost like you can't
- 14:06Speaker 1: even critique people anymore. I don't care, yo, Yo. Let
- 14:13Speaker 1: me tell you something. In the beginning, I used to
- 14:15Speaker 1: be like, oh my god, oh my god, oh he
- 14:18Speaker 1: just called me this, He just disrespected me. But I
- 14:21Speaker 1: see what it is, man, I see these low lines. Man,
- 14:23Speaker 1: they just like to comment to get that that that,
- 14:27Speaker 1: you know, so they could go back and run back
- 14:29Speaker 1: and tell it for yo. I was arguing with people
- 14:31Speaker 1: like yo, yah da da da, and then he gets
- 14:33Speaker 1: some followers behind that. Yeah. It's almost like there's people
- 14:36Speaker 1: who wait around online all day to be offended. It's like,
- 14:42Speaker 1: what are you doing with your life? Were you're just
- 14:44Speaker 1: sitting on Twitter waiting and waiting to get offended. They
- 14:46Speaker 1: not doing nothing, you know what I'm saying. So that's
- 14:49Speaker 1: another thing that's in thought. You know, like all these
- 14:51Speaker 1: cats ain't nobody. They just home rubbing on their peas
- 14:56Speaker 1: right right right right right right here. Yeah, I saw, Hey,
- 15:00Speaker 1: give me your honest thoughts. I really enjoyed. I saw
- 15:03Speaker 1: you tweeting about the Tyson fight. I really enjoyed watching.
- 15:07Speaker 1: First of all, Mike looked nice. Yeah, he looks sharp.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Let me tell you, man, I look back on both
- 15:13Speaker 1: of them dudes careers, and I look at how they
- 15:17Speaker 1: used to just dance on people like Roy is the
- 15:19Speaker 1: best boxer dancer ever, you know, back in his heyday.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Of course, even them giving this us, you know, giving
- 15:28Speaker 1: us this fight. Now it's like it's well appreciated because
- 15:32Speaker 1: it's great entertainment for the times we're in. Man. We
- 15:35Speaker 1: need some type of picker upper, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 15:37Speaker 1: I thought they did a great job. Whoever the Triller
- 15:39Speaker 1: people are they did? You know, even the Jake, the
- 15:42Speaker 1: Jake Paul shit, you know that was that was That
- 15:45Speaker 1: was crazy. That was crazy. And I mean I love
- 15:48Speaker 1: Nate Robinson, He's a nick you know what I'm saying.
- 15:50Speaker 1: But when you when you pop in that ship and
- 15:53Speaker 1: you ain't backing that ship up man, and you you
- 15:56Speaker 1: you really not going back that up, man, that's a
- 16:00Speaker 1: people disaster. We have a Did you pay attention to
- 16:04Speaker 1: the Grammy nominations? No? So the Best Rap Album category
- 16:10Speaker 1: this year was extremely It was some real hip hop
- 16:15Speaker 1: ship that got nominated. Yeah, something online I know. Freddy
- 16:20Speaker 1: Gibbs got nominated. Freddy Gibbs got nominated, Royce the five
- 16:24Speaker 1: nine got nominated. J J Electronica, uh NAS for King's
- 16:31Speaker 1: Disease and uh and this kid from LA named d Smoke.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'm wondering. D Smoke is really dope, talented kid from
- 16:40Speaker 1: Englewood out here in LA. He's uh. He was on
- 16:42Speaker 1: that show Rhythm and Flow on Netflix, but really fucking
- 16:45Speaker 1: amazing artists. I'm wondering though, what was your favorite album
- 16:48Speaker 1: of the year of this year of this year. Oh,
- 16:53Speaker 1: it's so good. It's so good, yo. Tell me how
- 16:59Speaker 1: crazy see the Fhara con speeches on there and how
- 17:03Speaker 1: it leads into bus of spasm. Man, people are so
- 17:07Speaker 1: afraid of the truth, bro, you know what I'm saying.
- 17:10Speaker 1: And that's one thing I commend about bust the rhymes,
- 17:13Speaker 1: like you know, doing this album. You know what I'm saying,
- 17:15Speaker 1: because it's real times right now, and you you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: to say to do something else other than something real,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you know, ain't the move. You know what I'm saying.
- 17:26Speaker 1: So ELI is the best album in twenty twenty. Yo,
- 17:32Speaker 1: It's crazy too, because it tells you how important it
- 17:36Speaker 1: is to make timeless music because a lot of this album,
- 17:40Speaker 1: some of these songs are ten years old, yeah, and
- 17:42Speaker 1: the fact that they still resonate right now, like and
- 17:48Speaker 1: then so you're a part of the intro talk about
- 17:51Speaker 1: how old that record is. Man, nineteen ninety two, and
- 17:58Speaker 1: you know it was you know the joint I did
- 18:00Speaker 1: for Nasen. He brought it back on some next you
- 18:04Speaker 1: got the I thought it was dope. He gave you
- 18:05Speaker 1: the feature like it's a feature in Pete Rock Love.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I love Buster Rhymes. We have a really good relationship
- 18:13Speaker 1: going back since nineteen ninety one. So that's my guy,
- 18:18Speaker 1: you know what I mean? And you know, shit, man, Look,
- 18:24Speaker 1: there was a lot of great music that came out,
- 18:26Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. But the way some of
- 18:30Speaker 1: the music that you hear, there's no real structure on
- 18:33Speaker 1: the album. This bust. The album has structure. M it's
- 18:38Speaker 1: front to back, front to back, and you can tell
- 18:41Speaker 1: that Buster cares about his audience. You could tell that
- 18:44Speaker 1: he made this album for them, and you could tell
- 18:47Speaker 1: that he is a hip hopper in his heart. All
- 18:52Speaker 1: the way he took he took the time on this album,
- 18:55Speaker 1: and in an era where no one takes time on
- 18:59Speaker 1: their projects. Everybody's just rushing and throwing stuff out and
- 19:02Speaker 1: there's no rush to throw music out. I want you
- 19:05Speaker 1: to take me back to obviously you're a part of
- 19:08Speaker 1: my favorite album ever, Illmatic, which is probably if you
- 19:11Speaker 1: were to, you know, interview one hundred taste makers and
- 19:15Speaker 1: hip hop, it'd probably get the most first place votes.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. I think it's probably undisputedly
- 19:21Speaker 1: that's amount Rushmore album. Yes, when did you first meet Nas?
- 19:27Speaker 1: Nineteen ninety on ninety one when I was hanging around
- 19:33Speaker 1: with Large Professor and the Queens shout out to Large
- 19:37Speaker 1: Professor now that this was? Was this around the time
- 19:40Speaker 1: Live at the Barbecued release or was it before that?
- 19:44Speaker 1: It was it was around that this around that time?
- 19:47Speaker 1: And and did that before that? And when you're working
- 19:51Speaker 1: on Illmatic, when you're working on with Nas, are you
- 19:55Speaker 1: like aware at the moment? Because I feel like so
- 19:58Speaker 1: much we're we're living in the moment, so sometimes you
- 20:00Speaker 1: don't realize like the history were a part of or
- 20:03Speaker 1: or like like, were you like aware at the time?
- 20:06Speaker 1: Are you conscious of like, Yo, this ship is like
- 20:08Speaker 1: this is going to change hip hop. Well depending on
- 20:12Speaker 1: who got the beat, and anytime I'm working with him,
- 20:15Speaker 1: you know, something good is gonna happen. So that's basically
- 20:20Speaker 1: what that was. And when I when he heard the beat,
- 20:23Speaker 1: it triggered something in him and you know, he on
- 20:27Speaker 1: the spot. He came up with the hook and he
- 20:29Speaker 1: was like, Yo, I want you to I want you
- 20:31Speaker 1: to say this hook. I want you to sing this hook.
- 20:34Speaker 1: You know, did it. I ain't want to do it
- 20:36Speaker 1: at first, but I did it. I ended up doing it. Yeah,
- 20:39Speaker 1: it's crazy because I also feel like you don't get
- 20:40Speaker 1: you don't get enough. You don't get props as much
- 20:42Speaker 1: as you should as a also as a as a
- 20:45Speaker 1: as an artist, I mean as a producer. You know.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I just feel like as an artist as well, I
- 20:51Speaker 1: feel like you don't get the respect. Maybe I'm not
- 20:55Speaker 1: supposed to be getting all this respect and stuff from like,
- 20:58Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't care, bro, you know what
- 21:01Speaker 1: I'm saying, because you know what people are gonna be
- 21:04Speaker 1: who they are. It's all good man. You know, you
- 21:06Speaker 1: got people out here who are clueless on what Pete
- 21:10Speaker 1: Rock has done. You know how important he is. All
- 21:13Speaker 1: that you know what I'm saying. And then you got
- 21:16Speaker 1: people that show love. You got people that's like, yo,
- 21:19Speaker 1: you are that nigga? Still you know what I'm saying.
- 21:22Speaker 1: And hey, man, you know it is what it is.
- 21:26Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. I'm not I'm not mad
- 21:28Speaker 1: at nobody. You know. There's so many dope people that producers,
- 21:32Speaker 1: rappers that I want to work with. Still, you know
- 21:35Speaker 1: what I mean? Yeah, I would love to hear the
- 21:38Speaker 1: Freddy Gibbs for me, would be would be would be
- 21:41Speaker 1: special and listen, I would put my foot in that
- 21:45Speaker 1: one and the and a ghost Face A ghost Face
- 21:48Speaker 1: project would be fucking insane to that that put two
- 21:51Speaker 1: feet in that. I feel like you've you've definitely probably
- 21:55Speaker 1: answered who are your favorite producers of all time? I
- 21:59Speaker 1: want to know who do you think is the most
- 22:03Speaker 1: slept on? Two or three producers? Ever? Two or three
- 22:07Speaker 1: producers you mean, like two or three producers that that
- 22:10Speaker 1: you think deserve to be in more conversations, because I
- 22:12Speaker 1: do think there are a lot that are you know,
- 22:14Speaker 1: I think large professors one of them. I think there's
- 22:16Speaker 1: a lot. But like, who do you got in that
- 22:18Speaker 1: in that? In that list? Black milk, Black milk is
- 22:22Speaker 1: so cold. Black milk needs more props. You know what
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'm saying. He's dope. You know what I'm saying. So dope.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And I don't know if people up on vitamin D,
- 22:32Speaker 1: but he dope too. Oh my goodness, he's a He's
- 22:36Speaker 1: one of my new favorite dudes. Yeah right, Yeah, Darrenger's dope.
- 22:41Speaker 1: The Griselda guy, he's he's great. I think, like, yeah,
- 22:45Speaker 1: d gets it in. You know what I'm saying. But
- 22:47Speaker 1: I was an Alchemist fan. You know what I'm saying.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Of course alc Man, Yeah, yep, Alchemists and you know
- 22:56Speaker 1: everyone else. I'm a fan of all producers. It's not
- 22:59Speaker 1: a fan like Ninth one. Everybody. I like everyone. You
- 23:03Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, is there. I'm gonna say Dila
- 23:07Speaker 1: and mad Lib on my two favorites. Yo, How crazy
- 23:12Speaker 1: were both of those mad Lit projects with Fred? Wow? Stupidity?
- 23:18Speaker 1: Come on, man be having joints man beat. I heard.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I heard he made a lot of bandana on an iPad,
- 23:26Speaker 1: which is crazy. He's played me so many joints and
- 23:31Speaker 1: sent me so much stuff. We talk almost every other day.
- 23:34Speaker 1: And then you know, when I tell people that they're
- 23:36Speaker 1: like I can't get him on the phone for nothing,
- 23:38Speaker 1: I can't find him. That's all right, Yo, do you
- 23:44Speaker 1: like shout out to mad Lib? But do you think,
- 23:51Speaker 1: like how often do you cause you know, I always
- 23:54Speaker 1: I heard this story that Kanye once snatched drums from
- 23:57Speaker 1: Doctor Dre back in the day, he probably did. How
- 24:01Speaker 1: often do you like as producers share like sounds or like,
- 24:06Speaker 1: have you ever hit somebody up? Like, Yo, where'd you
- 24:09Speaker 1: get those drums? No? Not not Pete Rock. I find
- 24:14Speaker 1: my own kicks and snares. Man, I got. I'm a
- 24:17Speaker 1: dig I'm a heavy digger man. That's all we do.
- 24:19Speaker 1: When as soon as we put the needle down where
- 24:21Speaker 1: we don't you know, we're looking for samples. But sometimes
- 24:24Speaker 1: when we put the needle down, you hear a popping
- 24:26Speaker 1: ass snare bop, you know what I'm saying, or I
- 24:29Speaker 1: had or you know, right, make snares some scratch, homie.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Let me ask you this because in twenty twenty, how
- 24:39Speaker 1: are like, like, what what do you use to make beats?
- 24:42Speaker 1: Are you using like like this? Because obviously times have changed,
- 24:45Speaker 1: technologies change. Back in the day, we used to carry
- 24:47Speaker 1: records when we were DJ. Now we don't need records.
- 24:50Speaker 1: How are you still using your old school equipment? Are
- 24:53Speaker 1: you on like reason pro tools? Like what are you
- 24:55Speaker 1: using or vinyl forever? I'm not a digital motherfucker. You
- 25:00Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. You ain't digital at all? You haven't.
- 25:03Speaker 1: You have a compromise on that. Do the digital work,
- 25:06Speaker 1: don't get it fucked up? Right? I do that shit.
- 25:09Speaker 1: But I'm when I'm home, man, it's it's viinal man.
- 25:12Speaker 1: And even like certain forty five parties, I may pop
- 25:16Speaker 1: up and do I'm bringing a little box out of vinyl.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Damn the forty fives. It's a beautiful thing. Man. Are
- 25:26Speaker 1: you do you have anything else that you have in
- 25:28Speaker 1: the can right now, Pete, that you're working on outside
- 25:30Speaker 1: of this instrumental project is about to drop. Yes, a
- 25:33Speaker 1: whole bunch of stuff, A whole twenty twenty one is
- 25:36Speaker 1: gonna be an awesome you know. Can you kind of
- 25:38Speaker 1: give us any sort of hints? I got my band,
- 25:44Speaker 1: Pete Rock and the Soul Brothers album we're working on
- 25:48Speaker 1: right not the Peastrumentals three. They're they're they're featured on that.
- 25:52Speaker 1: On every beat they're playing over every joint that you hear.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Right then, we drop an album, right and then my
- 26:00Speaker 1: man the Mayor comes the rapper the MC, and we
- 26:05Speaker 1: got a mixtape coming out called Worth Its Weight and
- 26:08Speaker 1: Soul where I just just taking anything Rick James outstanding
- 26:13Speaker 1: and fat back then and in certain you know, obscure
- 26:16Speaker 1: beats and mixing it all together and you know, give
- 26:19Speaker 1: people a feel of who this guy is. And you know,
- 26:23Speaker 1: it's just one of those things that you could just
- 26:25Speaker 1: it's a mixtape, it's free and you could just like
- 26:27Speaker 1: kind of jam to it and lyrically do this dope.
- 26:32Speaker 1: How what is your temperature on hip hop currently? I
- 26:35Speaker 1: feel like it's been in a dark place and I
- 26:37Speaker 1: feel like things are starting to turn around a little.
- 26:39Speaker 1: It's starting to turn around. So my temperatures right now,
- 26:42Speaker 1: it's sixty five degrees. Okay, you're not freezing. No, I'm
- 26:48Speaker 1: not freezing, but I'm in the middle somewhere, you know
- 26:50Speaker 1: what I'm saying, And I'm trying to get to the heat.
- 26:52Speaker 1: A couple of years ago, you might have been freezing.
- 26:54Speaker 1: A couple of years ago, I was. I was in
- 26:56Speaker 1: an igloo. Shit was rough, ship was rough, I was
- 27:02Speaker 1: angry and upset. You know what I'm saying. You know,
- 27:04Speaker 1: because I can't stand whack beats and lyrics. I can't. Yeah,
- 27:09Speaker 1: it's it's like some some some somewhere down the line,
- 27:12Speaker 1: this this like idea of like super overmodulated just very
- 27:17Speaker 1: just just just a lot of this ship that was
- 27:19Speaker 1: coming out just sounded like noise bro exactly, man. And
- 27:23Speaker 1: it was just like, I know, I was angry in
- 27:26Speaker 1: the beginning because it was going over my head like damn,
- 27:28Speaker 1: these guys ain't learned. Maybe we got to reteach them. Mmmm.
- 27:34Speaker 1: And then I snapped out of it, you know what
- 27:36Speaker 1: I'm saying, and was like, all right, you know, let
- 27:39Speaker 1: me just put some music out and see who bites.
- 27:43Speaker 1: That's fair. Hey, when you worked with with ya on
- 27:46Speaker 1: the Joy were you were you in? Was that when
- 27:48Speaker 1: you did you go to Hawaii for that? Yes? I did?
- 27:51Speaker 1: What was that? What was that? What was that trip? Like?
- 27:53Speaker 1: What was it like being out there working on history?
- 27:55Speaker 1: Because obviously that ended up on Watched the Throne? But
- 27:59Speaker 1: you know that was my beautiful dark twits, the fantasy
- 28:01Speaker 1: you know sessions yep, yep, yep. And it was great.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I mean, ship, that dude is living like a prince,
- 28:10Speaker 1: you know, at least on the Hawaii side. I've been
- 28:13Speaker 1: to his malleible, but that was that No, no, no,
- 28:16Speaker 1: that was Russell the comedian. I went to hang yes
- 28:22Speaker 1: in Malibu and he told me who lives around him
- 28:25Speaker 1: and near him? And I think jay Z lived down
- 28:27Speaker 1: the street and Kanye lived over there and so so.
- 28:30Speaker 1: But anyway, we was in Hawaii and had a huge
- 28:36Speaker 1: you know, it was it was great. I had I
- 28:38Speaker 1: had fun. Yeah, it was crazy because at that time,
- 28:41Speaker 1: he brought Riza into the fold. He brought you into
- 28:44Speaker 1: the fold, and it was like finally, like this, this
- 28:48Speaker 1: is the people we want to see Kanye work with.
- 28:50Speaker 1: These are the people who inspired him. Like I laid
- 28:52Speaker 1: I laid eight beats. I laid eight of my own beats,
- 28:55Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. And and it just we
- 28:58Speaker 1: narrowed it down to one, right, you know what I'm saying.
- 29:02Speaker 1: That's crazy. Yes, but I mean, you know, I had
- 29:05Speaker 1: so much fun. I met that was my first time
- 29:08Speaker 1: meeting Rick Rose, Rick, I mean Rose, you know what
- 29:11Speaker 1: I'm saying. I met Kick Cuddy that day. Yeah. I
- 29:19Speaker 1: met John Legend and his wife that day. Wow. Yeah.
- 29:25Speaker 1: And while we were working all day and then Kanye
- 29:27Speaker 1: had these little pieces of paper up all over the
- 29:31Speaker 1: studio saying no Twitter, no Twitter. Yeah, that tells you
- 29:37Speaker 1: how how long ago it was, because now would be
- 29:39Speaker 1: no Instagram. Yeah. I remember he did something like that
- 29:42Speaker 1: online where he talked about you know, and then when
- 29:45Speaker 1: I went over there and it was in the studio,
- 29:48Speaker 1: you know, he had it all over the studio. Were
- 29:51Speaker 1: you were you there to witness Rick Ross laying down
- 29:54Speaker 1: his verse for Devil in a new dress? No, I didn't.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I didn't see that go down because that that's one
- 29:59Speaker 1: of my favorite versus. But look, uh, the project comes
- 30:02Speaker 1: out next Friday or tomorrow or tonight eleven, December eleven,
- 30:07Speaker 1: so next Friday, yes, the volume three mm hmm and
- 30:13Speaker 1: then and then twenty twenty one, so much more coming
- 30:17Speaker 1: what I can't wait to start. And there it is, Hey, hey, hey,
- 30:24Speaker 1: and and uh shout out your artist amir, like how
- 30:26Speaker 1: can we find him online? And all that just we
- 30:27Speaker 1: could tap in with him. He goes by a m
- 30:31Speaker 1: x x R for showing on Instagram with you know,
- 30:36Speaker 1: periods between each syllable. All right, my g will Look,
- 30:39Speaker 1: I appreciate your time and and and thank you for
- 30:42Speaker 1: charging your phone up. Yeah, and you also you know,
- 30:46Speaker 1: go on my page if you want to hear like
- 30:48Speaker 1: two clips of the mixtape. You'll see you'll see the
- 30:52Speaker 1: cover with me and him on there. Are you gonna
- 30:55Speaker 1: be doing a vinyl pressing it all? Yes, yep, boom
- 30:58Speaker 1: go support man, have fun with it. You know what
- 31:01Speaker 1: I'm saying. You got to peep rock. Thank you for
- 31:04Speaker 1: your time, bro, God bless you kids. Yes, sir, all right,
