Transcript
- 0:01I love this time of year because the heat is subsiding and we're moving into
- 0:06fall and we're going to talk about going from the air conditioning to the heating on today's episode.
- 0:14And my guest today is Nathan Schaefer, a good friend of mine from Schaefer Heating
- 0:19and Cooling. Oh, and you guys do electrical and other stuff as well.
- 0:24That's right. How are you, Jim? Good to see you. I'm doing well, living the dream.
- 0:27Thank you so much for joining me today. Hey, we got a question for you from
- 0:30one of our listeners okay danny and danny's in greenfield his questions his
- 0:36question is nights are getting cooler but afternoons are still warm,
- 0:41is it too early to switch my thermostat over and should i have my furnace checked
- 0:46before i need to and before you answer that question.
- 0:50Some thermostats don't need to be switched over do they uh good point yeah so,
- 0:55in some thermostats you can't have the uh capability the feature to be able
- 0:58to turn it into what they call automatic mode.
- 1:02And obviously some thresholds can be set there, which we take care of.
- 1:06In the program, we set that up so that it's not just constantly kicking back
- 1:09and forth. There's a couple of degrees swing.
- 1:11But basically at my house, I'll set it at, you know, let's just say 70 degrees this time of year.
- 1:17And it'll automatically switch back and forth as needed because yeah,
- 1:21we do have those days where we're wearing shorts during the day and we got hoodies
- 1:25or jackets on, you know, at night and it's chilly and we need some heat to take the edge off.
- 1:29And so it just makes it real easy. You don't forget and go to bed and you wake
- 1:31up cold, right? Or forget when you leave for work the next morning.
- 1:34Oh, shoot. If I turn the AC back on, you come home and it's hot in the house.
- 1:37It just makes it simple and you don't have to worry about that.
- 1:39So that is definitely an option. And some people really like that,
- 1:42you know? And so, yeah, definitely an option.
- 1:45So to his question, should he be just switching it over?
- 1:51Or should he have his furnace checked out? Because that was really his question,
- 1:54right? Like, should I have this thing?
- 1:55Should I have my furnace checked out before I turn my air conditioning off for
- 1:59the year and turn my heat on?
- 2:01Yeah, heat on. Yeah. So definitely a good idea. And so I always like to say
- 2:06to and remind people, so think back to a car, right? We all drive a car.
- 2:11We maintain those vehicles.
- 2:13And it's not so much timing of the year when we do it. It's miles,
- 2:17right? Typically, most of your maintenance records or time you change the oil
- 2:20or do these different things is off of so many miles driven.
- 2:23And so picture your heating and cooling system a lot alike. And so obviously
- 2:27spring and fall times, you have to be transitioning to the next season as a
- 2:31very common time. And we're running a lot of those tape tune up calls.
- 2:35But it's not necessarily something
- 2:36like, hey, that's the only time or the time that I have to do it.
- 2:39As long as you're having that routine maintenance, we like to call full system
- 2:44rejuvenation, right? full cleanings, services, checks on the system,
- 2:48everything checked out for safety performance and all of the above, right?
- 2:52Biannually, once in heating mode, once in cooling mode, that may fall any time in that season.
- 2:57But I mean, if you can do that those two times, that really completely typically
- 3:01protects both you and your comfort, but as well as the health and efficiency of that system.
- 3:08And so, yes, if it has been a while and the system hasn't been checked and we
- 3:12haven't been doing that routinely?
- 3:14Yes, definitely, definitely a good idea. Hey, let's get that checked out before
- 3:17switching it over just to make sure everything is, you know, correct.
- 3:20It's safe, especially depending if it's like a gas furnace, right?
- 3:23Versus electric, let's make sure gas pressures are good. No carbon monoxide,
- 3:27exhaust flues, intakes, everything's good and free there. So definitely some
- 3:31great, some good things there to make sure that they have us check out.
- 3:34I recommend for us in this part of Ohio to have our air conditioning systems
- 3:40look at by April latest, and then our furnace by September.
- 3:46So now we're ready for both those seasons. Does that sound good?
- 3:50Yeah. And once again, we run those checks all year long. So as long as during
- 3:54that season, it'll have to depend on the weather, just different things.
- 3:57As long as it's being done biannually, it doesn't necessarily have to be by,
- 4:01a certain time of the year.
- 4:03We have guys that are in that department that literally every single working
- 4:07day of the year, they're running those tune-up type calls and keeping those
- 4:11systems up and running and efficiently.
- 4:14Nathan, thank you as always for joining me. By the way, everybody,
- 4:18all of Nathan Schaefer's information is located in the description of this podcast.
- 4:23Thank you, my friend. I appreciate your expertise here on the show.
- 4:26Hey, my pleasure. Thank you, Jim.
