- Cade Cunningham dropped FORTY-FIVE points last night. A franchise playoff record for Detroit. And they still might lose this series. That's the kind of cruel and unusual punishment the basketball gods specialize in. Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Let's start with what everyone in New England is still talking about — the Vrabel situation. Because this thing is not going away. It's getting louder. Albert Breer went on Boston radio and said, quote, "He has not been the same the last two weeks in that building. The bravado and everything else — this has taken a chunk out of that." And look, that tracks. The guy missed Day Three of the NFL Draft to fly to Utah for counseling. His family has a house out there, fine, but you're the head coach of the Patriots and you're not in the war room for the final day of the draft. That tells you everything about where his head is at. Now here's where it gets interesting. Vrabel showed up to a season ticket holders event on Tuesday and got a standing ovation from the fans. So the fan base is with him. His players are with him — Robert Spillane said, "I love Coach, and I'm going to be here to support him." Hunter Henry gave the classic stay-focused answer. But there's now real speculation about whether Vrabel makes it to training camp. Matt Cannata from Pro Football and Sports Network predicted this could lead to a resignation or a leave of absence. And Dianna Russini has already resigned from The Athletic. Her career in journalism is likely over. This whole thing went from whisper to wildfire in about a week, and I don't think we're anywhere near the end of it. The Patriots finally had their guy. Finally had stability. And now? Total uncertainty. Again. Staying in the NFL world — Aaron Rodgers got hit with the UFA tender from the Steelers. What this basically means is Pittsburgh's saying, "You're playing for us or you're retiring." Because if another team signs him, the Steelers get draft compensation. And nobody's giving up picks for a forty-two-year-old quarterback. So this is it. Rodgers to Pittsburgh or Rodgers to the couch. The Steelers also drafted Drew Allar in the third round, so they've got their future guy. But right now? They need the old man to commit. And he still hasn't. The A.J. Brown situation is heating up too. Schefter went on the Pat McAfee Show and basically said the deal to New England is going to happen after June first. His exact words — "The Eagles are open to moving him, the Patriots want him, and I believe in the end it will involve a future first-round draft pick — my guess is twenty twenty-eight." That dead money drops from forty-three point four million to sixteen point four million after June first, so Philly's just waiting for the calendar to flip. If you're a Pats fan and you just gave Vrabel a standing ovation, this is the other reason to be cautiously optimistic. A.J. Brown in that offense changes things. Quick hits around the league — Panthers picked up Bryce Young's fifth-year option, locking him in at twenty-five point nine million fully guaranteed for twenty-seven. Bold move for a guy they benched a year and a half ago, but I guess they're all-in now. Bo Nix had a clean-up procedure on his ankle. George Kittle wouldn't commit to being ready for training camp after that Achilles tear. And Heisman runner-up Diego Pavia signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent. That kid at Vanderbilt was electric. Baltimore's gonna find a way to use him. Alright, let's get to the court. Cade Cunningham went for forty-five in a win-or-go-home Game Five. Paolo Banchero matched him with forty-five of his own. That's ninety combined points from two guys under twenty-four years old, and it was every bit as good as that sounds. Detroit won one sixteen to one oh nine, but Orlando still leads three to two. Pistons gotta win two more, including one on the road. It's a tough ask. In Cleveland, the Cavs took care of business — one twenty-five to one twenty. Harden and Mobley both had twenty-three, and Toronto went cold in the fourth. Cleveland leads three to two. And down in LA, the Rockets kept their season alive without Kevin Durant. Jabari Smith Jr. had twenty-two, Tari Eason added eighteen, and Houston won ninety-nine to ninety-three. LeBron had twenty-five but seventeen of those came in the second half when it was already getting away from them. Lakers still lead three to two, but this series is heading back to Houston for Game Six on Friday. KD's missed four of five games in this series. If he can't go Friday, things get real interesting. Over in the NHL, the Flyers closed out the Penguins in Game Six. Cam York scored with two twenty-eight left in overtime to win it one to nothing. Pittsburgh had come back from down three to nothing to force a Game Six, and for a minute there, you could feel the hockey gods leaning toward chaos. But Philly slammed the door. They'll face Carolina in the second round. Here's my Hangover Take. The Steelers need to stop being polite and start being aggressive. You've got Rodgers on the UFA tender. You drafted Allar. But what's the actual plan for September? Because right now the Steelers are just sitting there hoping a forty-two-year-old decides he wants to play football. That's not a plan. That's a prayer. If I'm Pittsburgh, I'm on the phone every single day making Rodgers feel wanted. You roll out the red carpet. You tell him exactly what the offense looks like with him. You make him feel like this is HIS team for one year. Because if Rodgers retires and you're rolling out a third-round rookie in Week One, that defense is gonna be wasted. That roster is too good to gamble on indecision. Force the issue, Pittsburgh. Pick up the phone. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
