- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey everybody, so glad you've joined us. We are here
- 0:14Speaker 1: for part two of the Fearless Town Hall. We're going
- 0:18Speaker 1: to have a great time asking some fabulous questions from
- 0:21Speaker 1: around the world and discussing a topic that has become
- 0:24Speaker 1: very important in our day and time. Our world has
- 0:27Speaker 1: become drenched in a Niagara of fear. And so we're
- 0:30Speaker 1: going to take that on, and we're going to talk
- 0:32Speaker 1: about what we can do about that, how we can
- 0:35Speaker 1: be released from that. And I can't think of anybody
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'd rather continue that conversation with than Max Lucado. Max
- 0:41Speaker 1: is a longtime pastor here at Oak Hills that we're
- 0:44Speaker 1: coming to you live from in San Antonio, Texas. He's
- 0:47Speaker 1: a best-selling author of over 65 million books, and he's
- 0:51Speaker 1: my friend. Please help me welcome Max Lucado.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Hi, everybody. What a good-looking group. You don't look afraid.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Where do you go, and where will you turn, and
- 1:12Speaker 2: where will you be the next time you see a
- 1:17Speaker 2: reason for fear? Did you hear a siren on the highway?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Did you have questions about your health? How far do
- 1:27Speaker 2: you have to read in the newspaper before somebody is
- 1:31Speaker 2: forecasting Another downturn in the economy or upswing in global warming.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The plague of our day begins with the word terror.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It's enough to make you want to go underground, right?
- 1:47Speaker 3: And just kind of get.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Away from it all. And it's enough to make you
- 1:55Speaker 2: wonder what in the world was Jesus thinking when he
- 1:59Speaker 2: asked that question, why are you afraid? He asked it
- 2:04Speaker 2: in the middle of a storm. His disciples had followed
- 2:10Speaker 2: him onto a boat onto the Sea of Galilee. And
- 2:16Speaker 2: so the boat was just in the middle of this storm.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And the disciples looked over and they saw Jesus. And
- 2:24Speaker 2: Jesus was, does anyone know? He was sound asleep. Thunder roars,
- 2:31Speaker 2: Jesus snores. And when the disciples saw that he was asleep,
- 2:38Speaker 2: they were perturbed. They didn't like that thought. And so
- 2:44Speaker 2: they woke him up. And they woke him up with
- 2:46Speaker 2: this question. Mark is the one who wrote the question down. Teacher,
- 2:49Speaker 2: don't you care that we're about to perish? Teacher, don't
- 2:55Speaker 2: you care that we're about to perish? Now I want
- 2:57Speaker 2: you to notice what fear did to them. Fear caused
- 3:00Speaker 2: them to question the goodness of God. Their fear had
- 3:06Speaker 2: them so wound up that they thought God was a
- 3:08Speaker 2: bad God. He doesn't care. And Jesus looked at them
- 3:12Speaker 2: and he asked them that question. He said, now why
- 3:17Speaker 2: are you afraid? Why are you afraid? As we start,
- 3:24Speaker 2: can I ask you that question? That's a good question.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That is a very good question. Why are you afraid?
- 3:33Speaker 2: It's certainly not because fear does you any good. Are
- 3:37Speaker 2: you a better person because of your fear? Does your spouse,
- 3:42Speaker 2: do your children ever say, man, I'm so thankful that
- 3:44Speaker 2: my dad worries so much. Do you ever call your
- 3:50Speaker 2: doctor up and say, doc, ever since you told me
- 3:52Speaker 2: to be a hypochondriac, man, I have felt great. It
- 3:57Speaker 2: doesn't work. Nothing good comes of extended fear. So why
- 4:03Speaker 2: are you afraid? It could be because you live in
- 4:07Speaker 2: a fearful world. Or it could be because you don't
- 4:11Speaker 2: know that fear is an option. What if fear is
- 4:14Speaker 2: an option? And what if you could fear less tomorrow
- 4:18Speaker 2: than you do today? So we have some great questions.
- 4:22Speaker 2: We have an opportunity to have a conversation about fear.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And I'm looking forward to this and I hope you
- 4:27Speaker 2: are as well. Susan? Yes, Max.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Our first question is from Twitter. And it asks, Max,
- 4:33Speaker 1: what do you think people are most afraid of? And
- 4:36Speaker 1: are there any fears that you have struggled with?
- 4:40Speaker 2: The big fear that people have is this. The fear
- 4:43Speaker 2: that they don't matter. The fear that they don't count.
- 4:47Speaker 2: The fear that they make no contribution. And the big
- 4:50Speaker 2: answer to that fear is given through Christ. When he
- 4:55Speaker 2: talks to us about how much we matter to him.
- 4:59Speaker 2: He finds the most marginalized people in the world. Like
- 5:04Speaker 2: the Samaritan woman who had been through five divorces. Like
- 5:09Speaker 2: little Zacchaeus, the troublemaker who had ponzi'd his way into
- 5:14Speaker 2: wealth but didn't have any friends. Had a big mansion
- 5:17Speaker 2: but no one to come over for dinner. Jesus went
- 5:19Speaker 2: over and had lunch with him. The stories of the
- 5:21Speaker 2: Bible are full of the way Jesus went to people
- 5:24Speaker 2: who probably thought they didn't matter. And he said, you
- 5:28Speaker 2: do matter. But what about me and my fears? I
- 5:32Speaker 2: think it's possible to get to the point where you
- 5:36Speaker 2: can deal with fears quickly. And can I say I'm
- 5:40Speaker 2: learning to do that? I've been a worrywart all my life.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And I've been up early so many mornings that I
- 5:48Speaker 2: was up before the roosters because of anxiety. But you
- 5:51Speaker 2: know what I've learned to do? I've learned that the
- 5:54Speaker 2: moment those worries appear, I treat them with prayer. The
- 5:59Speaker 2: second thing I've learned to do is keep a list
- 6:03Speaker 2: of worries and then go back and read it every
- 6:05Speaker 2: so often to see if any of those worries have
- 6:08Speaker 2: come true. And you know what I've learned? Most of
- 6:12Speaker 2: them don't. They were just wasted energy. And you know
- 6:17Speaker 2: what else I've learned to do? I've learned to create
- 6:21Speaker 2: a group of friends to pray with me. And I've
- 6:24Speaker 2: found that that is so encouraging. A circle of people
- 6:27Speaker 2: you know who will covenant with you to pray about
- 6:30Speaker 2: your anxiety. Because I believe that with prayer, you can
- 6:35Speaker 2: move forward. Susan?
- 6:38Speaker 1: Thank you, Max. Janet says, one of my fears is
- 6:40Speaker 1: never finding who or what I was made to be.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I thought I was supposed to be a wife and mom,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but it's not worked out. I don't know where to begin.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Life just doesn't work out like we think it will,
- 6:52Speaker 2: does it? And the reason it doesn't is because life changes.
- 6:57Speaker 2: We don't like change. Change is very scary because change
- 7:03Speaker 2: takes us into the unknown. And fear, again, is this
- 7:06Speaker 2: resistance to chaos. We don't like the unknown. Now, fortunately,
- 7:13Speaker 2: the Bible talks a lot about change. In fact, in
- 7:16Speaker 2: the book of Ecclesiastes, there's a whole section of seasons.
- 7:21Speaker 2: There is a season for this, a season for that,
- 7:24Speaker 2: a season for this, a season for that. I count
- 7:26Speaker 2: 21 different seasons. And one of the messages of the
- 7:29Speaker 2: Bible is that life is always changing. So, if you
- 7:33Speaker 2: don't want any change, go to a soda machine. Because
- 7:37Speaker 2: that's the only place you won't find any change. Change
- 7:42Speaker 2: is coming. It's coming down the pike. So get ready
- 7:46Speaker 2: for it. And that was the message that Jesus gave
- 7:49Speaker 2: the disciples... The night before he was crucified. He was
- 7:54Speaker 2: preparing them. For the biggest change of their lives. That
- 7:58Speaker 2: their leader. Was going to be crucified. And he was
- 8:00Speaker 2: going to be buried. And so to prepare them. He said.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I want to introduce you. To the Holy Spirit. And
- 8:09Speaker 2: the way that God helps us cope with change. Is
- 8:12Speaker 2: through the presence of the Holy Spirit. In John chapter 14.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Jesus said. The spirit of the truth. Whom the world.
- 8:20Speaker 2: So the promise he says is not there will be
- 8:22Speaker 2: no change, but the promise he says is I'll be
- 8:24Speaker 2: with you during the change. In fact, he says change
- 8:28Speaker 2: is necessary in order for us to have the presence
- 8:30Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit over the whole world There needed
- 8:51Speaker 2: to be the exiting of God who came in the
- 8:54Speaker 2: flesh in the form of Jesus Christ. And Jesus said,
- 8:57Speaker 2: but the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
- 9:00Speaker 2: send in my name, he will teach you all things
- 9:03Speaker 2: and he will bring to your remembrance all things that
- 9:05Speaker 2: I have said to you. Peace I'll leave with you.
- 9:08Speaker 2: My peace I give unto you. So here's the thing
- 9:12Speaker 2: about change. You don't know what's coming down the pike.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I don't know what's coming down the pike. But we
- 9:18Speaker 2: do know who is leading us down the pike. And
- 9:21Speaker 2: he will not leave us alone. He'll walk with us
- 9:27Speaker 2: through the change that comes. So just relax. Embrace the
- 9:31Speaker 2: change as something good. And know that if God brings change,
- 9:36Speaker 2: it's because he thinks you're better off with it than
- 9:39Speaker 2: without it. Susan?
- 9:41Speaker 1: Sir, tell us your name and where you're from.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Hi, my name is Mark and I'm from Houston, Texas.
- 9:47Speaker 4: And what I'd like to discuss tonight with you, Max,
- 9:51Speaker 4: is the fear that I have in my family. We've
- 9:54Speaker 4: had a lot of illness, and from those illnesses, some loss,
- 9:58Speaker 4: and currently... some elderly parents who are facing infirmities of
- 10:03Speaker 4: getting old. And I'm hoping you have some advice for
- 10:06Speaker 4: my family and others who are in these straits.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I think that this type of fear of physical infirmity
- 10:14Speaker 2: comes at us on two levels. Number one, the suffering
- 10:17Speaker 2: that I'll experience on this earth. And then number two,
- 10:21Speaker 2: what it signals that's about to happen as I depart
- 10:24Speaker 2: from this earth. And I believe that Jesus deals with
- 10:28Speaker 2: the issue of physical suffering first and foremost by the
- 10:31Speaker 2: promise of physical resurrection. If you don't have in your
- 10:37Speaker 2: toolkit the promise that you will someday be called from
- 10:41Speaker 2: the grave into an eternal existence where there is no pain,
- 10:45Speaker 2: no disease, and no death, I'd be afraid to. But
- 10:53Speaker 2: if you believe that Jesus was speaking the truth when
- 10:56Speaker 2: he told his disciples on the night before his death,
- 11:00Speaker 2: don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God. Trust
- 11:06Speaker 2: also in me. For in my Father's house there are
- 11:10Speaker 2: many mansions. And if it were not so, I would
- 11:13Speaker 2: not have told you. And I am going there to
- 11:15Speaker 2: prepare a place for you so that you may be
- 11:18Speaker 2: where I am. And I will come back. and take
- 11:21Speaker 2: you to be with me where I am. The promise
- 11:24Speaker 2: there is that the second you close your eyes and
- 11:27Speaker 2: take your final breath on earth will be the second
- 11:30Speaker 2: that you open your eyes and see Jesus himself. Now,
- 11:33Speaker 2: how can we believe this? How can we believe this? Well,
- 11:38Speaker 2: we believe this because of the empty tomb of Jesus himself.
- 11:43Speaker 2: We believe this because when Peter stood up 50 days
- 11:46Speaker 2: later after the crucifixion of Christ and said that Jesus
- 11:50Speaker 2: had been Risen from the dead, nobody in the audience said,
- 11:53Speaker 2: oh no, he wasn't. And nobody could ever produce the
- 11:57Speaker 2: body of Christ. And the reason they couldn't is because
- 12:00Speaker 2: Jesus was resurrected in a physical body. And he appeared
- 12:03Speaker 2: not just to Peter and James and John and the twelve,
- 12:06Speaker 2: but he appeared to several hundred of the disciples at
- 12:09Speaker 2: one time. They touched him. They felt his wounds. He
- 12:15Speaker 2: ate fish in their presence. He was with them. So
- 12:18Speaker 2: armed with this understanding of the grave... we are then
- 12:21Speaker 2: able to understand and walk into times of illness. And
- 12:26Speaker 2: many of us have. From God's providence, during the season,
- 12:31Speaker 2: I wrote this book. I was experiencing heart problems. And
- 12:34Speaker 2: I had to ask the questions that many of my
- 12:36Speaker 2: friends have had to ask. You know, what if I
- 12:38Speaker 2: don't come out of this surgery alive? And I finally decided,
- 12:43Speaker 2: you know, I guess that's not so bad. I mean,
- 12:47Speaker 2: the worst that can happen is I go to heaven. Hmm.
- 12:55Speaker 2: That's not a false courage. That's not a false bravado.
- 12:58Speaker 2: That's just realizing how strong my father is. And I
- 13:02Speaker 2: believe that he called his son out of the grave
- 13:05Speaker 2: so he can call me out of the grave. And
- 13:08Speaker 2: that gives me some courage. Yes, let's pray through it.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Let's encourage each other. Let's ask God for healing. Let's
- 13:14Speaker 2: ask him to use the healing to demonstrate how strong
- 13:17Speaker 2: he is. But if he then says, no, it's your
- 13:19Speaker 2: time to come home. That's okay.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Okay.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Because who doesn't want to go home? Right? Thank you.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Great question. Thank you. Susan?
- 13:30Speaker 1: Next question we want to take. Max comes in through maxlocator.com, email.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I often get anxiety attacks in which I feel something
- 13:38Speaker 1: bad is going to happen to my loved ones, especially
- 13:41Speaker 1: my spouse, since he's a firefighter. I believe in God
- 13:43Speaker 1: and often pray when I start feeling this way. Does
- 13:46Speaker 1: this mean I don't have enough faith?
- 13:48Speaker 2: Do you think Jesus was ever afraid? When? When? In
- 13:53Speaker 2: the garden of Gethsemane. I mean you cannot read the
- 13:57Speaker 2: account of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. And think
- 14:00Speaker 2: that he escaped fear.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Why?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Because he knew what he was about to face. Even
- 14:06Speaker 2: though I don't think we can comprehend what he was
- 14:09Speaker 2: about to face. But he said Lord take this cup
- 14:12Speaker 2: away from me. And remember the description in the gospels.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Is that he fell on the ground. And he prayed.
- 14:19Speaker 2: And he prayed so urgently.
- 14:21Speaker 5: That.
- 14:22Speaker 2: His blood began to come out of his skin. It
- 14:25Speaker 2: was such a physical manifestation of fear. So he is
- 14:29Speaker 2: really facing fear. So there's a good place for us
- 14:33Speaker 2: to go and say, now how do we deal with fear?
- 14:36Speaker 2: Here's how Jesus dealt with it. What did he do? Well,
- 14:41Speaker 2: he went to the Garden of Gethsemane. He went to
- 14:44Speaker 2: the Garden of Gethsemane and he prayed. He prayed urgently.
- 14:49Speaker 2: He prayed fervently. And you know what else he did?
- 14:54Speaker 2: He prayed specifically. Take this cup away from me. I
- 15:00Speaker 2: really believe that you have a weapon against fear that's
- 15:04Speaker 2: with you all the time, and that is prayer. And
- 15:08Speaker 2: I believe if you're not living in a semi-state of prayer,
- 15:12Speaker 2: you're missing out on some courage. And you and I
- 15:15Speaker 2: should be praying all the time. Your fears appear foolish
- 15:20Speaker 2: standing there naked. In front of God. And prayer just
- 15:24Speaker 2: disrobes them.
- 15:25Speaker 5: See?
- 15:26Speaker 2: So get specific. That's what Jesus did. He said, take
- 15:29Speaker 2: this cup away from me. There's something else you can
- 15:33Speaker 2: do about these moments of sudden anxiety. You can have
- 15:37Speaker 2: a circle of friends to pray with you. That's what
- 15:40Speaker 2: Jesus did. Now, his friends didn't really get an A
- 15:44Speaker 2: plus on their prayers that night, if you remember. But
- 15:48Speaker 2: they fell asleep, didn't they? Peter, James, and John. You
- 15:51Speaker 2: know what? But listen, if Jesus wanted the prayerful support
- 15:56Speaker 2: of friends, how much more do we? Get a group
- 16:01Speaker 2: of four or five people and say, do you mind
- 16:03Speaker 2: if I send you a text message or an email
- 16:06Speaker 2: or just call you when I feel this fear coming?
- 16:09Speaker 2: Just send you an alert and you pray for me.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Let's covenant to pray together. And I think you'll be
- 16:16Speaker 2: amazed what happens.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Max, here's another question from Twitter. This is from Diana
- 16:20Speaker 1: from Raleigh, North Carolina. My family tells me I am
- 16:23Speaker 1: a control freak. I think I'm just being responsible. Who
- 16:28Speaker 1: do you think is right?
- 16:32Speaker 2: Let's talk a little bit about control freaks and why
- 16:36Speaker 2: we like to control things. The reason we like to
- 16:39Speaker 2: control things is because the rest of life seems out
- 16:42Speaker 2: of control. We want to have one little segment of
- 16:46Speaker 2: life that is predictable. And so we try to control it.
- 16:52Speaker 2: sometimes this manifests itself in perfectionism. Sometimes this manifests itself
- 16:58Speaker 2: in obsessive-compulsive behavior. And sometimes this manifests itself in an
- 17:04Speaker 2: unhealthy attempt to control other people. Again, fear can be
- 17:09Speaker 2: good because it alerts us to dangers. But inappropriate treatment
- 17:14Speaker 2: of fear can be devastating. So when you begin to
- 17:18Speaker 2: trust your Heavenly Father more, And fear less. You're actually
- 17:24Speaker 2: going to be a better wife. You're going to be
- 17:27Speaker 2: physically healthier. You're going to be better to work with.
- 17:32Speaker 2: You're just going to be a better human being. By
- 17:34Speaker 2: the way, did I already mention to you that do
- 17:37Speaker 2: not fear statements are the most common statements from Jesus
- 17:40Speaker 2: in the Bible? By far and away, his most common
- 17:43Speaker 2: command is something like do not be afraid. And that's
- 17:47Speaker 2: because he knows what it does to us. He sees
- 17:50Speaker 2: what it does to us. So congratulations to you for
- 17:53Speaker 2: taking your fear seriously. And you're going to be a
- 17:55Speaker 2: better person with more courage. Yes, sir.
- 18:00Speaker 6: I'm Daniel from Plano, Texas. And my question is, Mr. Cato,
- 18:05Speaker 6: I'm 13 and kids my age don't really remember the
- 18:08Speaker 6: time before 9-11, the wars and terrorism. And now there's
- 18:12Speaker 6: all this like crazy financial stuff. How can kids my
- 18:16Speaker 6: age have a life of courage instead of fear?
- 18:20Speaker 2: Monitor your fear intake. Fear is coming from everywhere. All
- 18:25Speaker 2: sources of media are telling you to be afraid. You
- 18:28Speaker 2: know why? Because fear sells. Fear sells magazines. Fear sells
- 18:35Speaker 2: advertising space. You've heard probably how the news broadcasters have
- 18:43Speaker 2: learned to keep us in our couch during the commercial
- 18:47Speaker 2: because right before they go into a commercial break, they'll say,
- 18:50Speaker 2: coming up next, what you don't know about the water
- 18:53Speaker 2: you drink. We go, oh, ah. So I would encourage
- 19:00Speaker 2: you to get in the habit of monitoring your fear
- 19:04Speaker 2: intake For me, that means turning off the radio, turning
- 19:08Speaker 2: off the television, going a few days without newspaper reading.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I've survived. I did all right. Counterbalance all the fear
- 19:18Speaker 2: intake with faith intake. Memorize Bible verses. Be around people
- 19:22Speaker 2: of faith. And most of all, pray. Because the truth
- 19:27Speaker 2: is this. Courage is fear that says it's prayers. I'm
- 19:34Speaker 2: wanting to recruit an army of courage. And I'm wanting
- 19:37Speaker 2: to find some people who are willing to say, you know,
- 19:40Speaker 2: enough of this fear. Enough of this fear. I just
- 19:43Speaker 2: realized that fear is an option. So here's what I
- 19:46Speaker 2: want you to do. I want you to go to maxlocato.com.
- 19:50Speaker 2: and I want you to put a stake in the ground.
- 19:52Speaker 2: What does that mean? That means you're going to sign
- 19:54Speaker 2: up to be a part of the army of courage.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Just put your name there. Just so we'll all know
- 19:59Speaker 2: we're in this thing together. Nobody's going to send you
- 20:01Speaker 2: anything or sell you anything. We're just going to get
- 20:03Speaker 2: all our names on there, and then we'll all read
- 20:06Speaker 2: those names, and we'll say, you look at all these
- 20:08Speaker 2: people all over the world, from Australia to London to
- 20:11Speaker 2: Switzerland to San Antonio, who are declaring war on fear.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I'm a part of that army of courage. And we'll
- 20:18Speaker 2: pray for each other. We may not know each other's stories,
- 20:21Speaker 2: but we'll see the names, and we'll just read over
- 20:23Speaker 2: those thousands of names and say, Lord, wherever that person
- 20:26Speaker 2: is today, Give them some courage and grant me some
- 20:29Speaker 2: courage too. You want to enlist? I hope you will.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Let's see if we can declare war on fear. Let's
- 20:37Speaker 2: see if we can trust more and fear less. Amen.
- 21:11Speaker 3: You don't have to be known You.
- 21:17Speaker 5: Don't have to stay close As long as you're somewhere
- 21:24Speaker 5: out there.
- 21:28Speaker 3: That's enough for me I.
