Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to Cardinal Territory. Kyle Gibson, Lance
- 0:12Speaker 1: Lynn here with me. Jim Hayes is on a break.
- 0:15Speaker 1: So it is Lance and I today. It is All
- 0:18Speaker 1: Star week, so we got a little bit of Cardinal
- 0:20Speaker 1: news we're going to talk about today. But Lance, you
- 0:23Speaker 1: and I are just gonna sit here and talk a
- 0:25Speaker 1: little bit about the All Star game, little Homer in
- 0:27Speaker 1: Derby and we get a two show Jim Hayes hiatus.
- 0:31Speaker 1: So I think maybe on Thursday would be a really
- 0:34Speaker 1: good time to bring in, like, you know, maybe the
- 0:37Speaker 1: biggest name guess we can uh and just have Jim
- 0:40Speaker 1: watch it, you know, after fact, I know how he's
- 0:43Speaker 1: going to tune in obviously and see how we did.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But you know, we'll have a big guest on Thursday
- 0:47Speaker 1: and see if we can make him jobs. Maybe.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't see many Sideline guys taking an All
- 0:52Speaker 2: Star break as a true all Star break, but you
- 0:55Speaker 2: know that's Jim for you. You know, he likes to
- 0:58Speaker 2: work very minimal and get paid the most. So we're
- 1:01Speaker 2: seeing that right now. So I'm not surprised that he
- 1:03Speaker 2: took his break. He expects us to join whenever we're
- 1:06Speaker 2: on things, but you know, not him so here.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Asking us to asking us to join in, uh, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 1: just random things. I'm out doing yard work the other day,
- 1:16Speaker 1: he just joined in. I'm like, no, I've already got
- 1:18Speaker 1: Tarps off. I'm not joining in on a podcast when
- 1:20Speaker 1: Tarps off doing yard work.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Jim, but he run across that run across the range
- 1:25Speaker 2: to get through your WiFi please so you can get
- 1:27Speaker 2: in right and kicking.
- 1:28Speaker 1: That's exactly right. The expectations are high, except when it's
- 1:31Speaker 1: All Star break for Jim. So, uh well, it's it'll
- 1:34Speaker 1: be a fun one today. I think talking about the
- 1:36Speaker 1: All Star Game and the home run derby is is
- 1:39Speaker 1: Uh this is kind of the halfway point almost, but
- 1:42Speaker 1: it gives a lot of fun things to talk about,
- 1:44Speaker 1: you know, celebrate first hast for some players, because there's
- 1:46Speaker 1: obviously been some players that we feel like should have
- 1:49Speaker 1: been in the game that didn't get in the game.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Uh So, now that it's Monday here, All Star Game tomorrow,
- 1:54Speaker 1: they're probably not going to add anybody unless we have
- 1:56Speaker 1: some you know, a crazy injury or somebody can't pitch,
- 1:59Speaker 1: or but who do you have out there in your
- 2:02Speaker 1: mind that should be in Philly, you know, either in
- 2:06Speaker 1: the home run derby or you know, ultimately in the
- 2:08Speaker 1: game tomorrow.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think everyone's kind of it's the
- 2:12Speaker 2: obvious that it's in it's in Philly, and and Wheeler
- 2:15Speaker 2: wasn't added from the get go, to be honest with you,
- 2:18Speaker 2: I think that's kind of the biggest and he's he
- 2:20Speaker 2: said it in media. It's like it's it's disrespectful, as
- 2:22Speaker 2: a slap in the face. There's so many positives for
- 2:26Speaker 2: why adding him with you know, the thrastic outlet surgery,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and then what he's done on the field this year
- 2:32Speaker 2: and dominated, and it's in his home ballpark. So the
- 2:34Speaker 2: fact that he wasn't an original ad or whatever you
- 2:38Speaker 2: would call it. You know, you have your van your
- 2:40Speaker 2: fan vote and your player vote and all that for
- 2:42Speaker 2: players and pitchers, and then that he wasn't the first
- 2:46Speaker 2: in right away, I understand why he's upset. And you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: like we've all said, we've gone through it. I've gone
- 2:51Speaker 2: through it, and I think Cleveland and nineteen they were like, hey,
- 2:54Speaker 2: if you can, if you'll pitch in the game, will
- 2:56Speaker 2: add you. And it's like, hey, I've got the first
- 2:59Speaker 2: game back and back then I think we came back
- 3:01Speaker 2: on a Thursday night, so I was like, hey, I
- 3:02Speaker 2: can't pitch in the game and pitch for my team
- 3:04Speaker 2: on Thursday. I guess if you don't think I deserve
- 3:07Speaker 2: to be there, then don't. Then don't add me. But
- 3:08Speaker 2: I'm not gonna be able to pitch. So every year
- 3:11Speaker 2: you'll have something like this. But it sucks that it
- 3:13Speaker 2: was in his home ballpark and they did it to
- 3:14Speaker 2: him like that.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't I don't really understand. You know, we
- 3:20Speaker 1: talked about it a little bit last week. I don't
- 3:21Speaker 1: really understand the point of not adding him. You know,
- 3:25Speaker 1: he's got one of the best dras in the league.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You know, he missed what three starts maybe you know,
- 3:30Speaker 1: he still has almost one hundred innings. He qualifies for
- 3:32Speaker 1: the ERA I think with ninety two or ninety three
- 3:36Speaker 1: innings and he's ten and one. You know, he just
- 3:38Speaker 1: won his last game and punched out ten and six innings.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I think kind of has a little bit of here
- 3:42Speaker 1: here you go. I won't be there. But I don't
- 3:45Speaker 1: blame him at all. I mean, you know, I'm sure
- 3:48Speaker 1: it would have been great, you know, to stay there
- 3:50Speaker 1: in Philly. He might stay there in Philly anyways, with
- 3:52Speaker 1: it being you know there, but you know, it gives
- 3:55Speaker 1: him maybe a chance to go to his hometown and
- 3:57Speaker 1: spent a couple of days with some family. But yeah,
- 4:00Speaker 1: that's a battle. I think. The one that stands out
- 4:03Speaker 1: a little bit to me, and as I was looking
- 4:04Speaker 1: into it, is Mickey Moniac. You know, he missed a
- 4:08Speaker 1: few games, you know, on the I L. I think
- 4:10Speaker 1: he's only got you know, maybe just under two hundred
- 4:13Speaker 1: at bats or something, but he's got a nine to
- 4:16Speaker 1: twenty ops. He's got almost twenty homers. I think, you know, yeah,
- 4:21Speaker 1: he's missed some games, but you know there's other players
- 4:24Speaker 1: also that have been named before that had missed some games.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And I don't know, I think that's a tough one
- 4:29Speaker 1: for me to see a guy who probably doesn't get
- 4:32Speaker 1: a whole lot of love because it's in Colorado. You know,
- 4:35Speaker 1: they're they're struggling obviously, but man, he's been one of
- 4:38Speaker 1: the better NL outfielders except for the time that he
- 4:40Speaker 1: was you know, on the shelf on the I L.
- 4:42Speaker 1: But you know, there's always gonna be these guys. But
- 4:45Speaker 1: that was one position player that, man, it just didn't
- 4:47Speaker 1: make sense why he didn't make it. The other thing
- 4:50Speaker 1: that I think stands out to me is unless you
- 4:54Speaker 1: get saves, you're almost not considered for this All Star
- 4:58Speaker 1: name as a reliever.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like it's minerary believers don't exist. Really,
- 5:04Speaker 2: minerary lievers aren't real people. As Jesse Chavez used to say,
- 5:08Speaker 2: we don't exist. Just abuse this and let us go
- 5:10Speaker 2: about our day.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I'm looking. I'm looking at the list,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and I kind of looked through a few of them.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You know, Luke Weaver's got a one a d R
- 5:18Speaker 1: and almost forty innings. You know, Tyler Rogers has forty
- 5:22Speaker 1: three innings and a one point sixty RA. I mean,
- 5:26Speaker 1: there's quite a few guys. You know, a guy like
- 5:28Speaker 1: Jacob Latz gets in, Brian Baker gets in. You know,
- 5:30Speaker 1: they've got the saves and they've got the leverage innings,
- 5:33Speaker 1: but these seventh and eighth inning guys get no love
- 5:37Speaker 1: whatsoever for this All Star Game. Is that ever gonna
- 5:41Speaker 1: change or is that just because you know, starting pitchers
- 5:44Speaker 1: and saves kind of takes the cake in the All
- 5:47Speaker 1: Star Game?
- 5:48Speaker 2: Is there people who make a lot of money they
- 5:50Speaker 2: won them at the All Star Games, and usually guys
- 5:54Speaker 2: who get saves and starters make the most money, so
- 5:57Speaker 2: they're the ones you want at All Star Games. Is
- 6:00Speaker 2: the best pitcher know, it's who has some numbers and
- 6:04Speaker 2: the most money and the bigger names. And then you'll
- 6:07Speaker 2: get every once in a while you'll have the year
- 6:09Speaker 2: where you know, where guys have such great years you
- 6:12Speaker 2: can't keep them out. But closers will always get in,
- 6:15Speaker 2: especially if they're up in the top saves. They play
- 6:18Speaker 2: for big markets, they make big money. Same with starters,
- 6:21Speaker 2: unless you're a Wheeler. That's the only one I've ever
- 6:24Speaker 2: seen that is that's that was so obvious. Then they
- 6:27Speaker 2: messed it up when it's in his home ball parking.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You know, he's been an All Star the last two years.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So but yeah, I would say, no, it's not going
- 6:36Speaker 2: to change unless you have a zero E. R A
- 6:39Speaker 2: As a middle or you know, six seventh inning guy.
- 6:44Speaker 2: That's the only way you get in. You see it
- 6:45Speaker 2: very few times over our career, over the span of it,
- 6:49Speaker 2: where a guy gets in without without having saves.
- 6:53Speaker 1: It's crazy, crazy because those guys, you know, we've got holds,
- 6:55Speaker 1: We've got a lot of things that you'll help those
- 6:58Speaker 1: guys get some recognition. But yeah, that was one thing
- 7:01Speaker 1: whenever we see relievers have good first afts and just
- 7:04Speaker 1: get left off as not much you can say in
- 7:06Speaker 1: the locker room other than man, if you're a pitching
- 7:09Speaker 1: the ninth, then you'd be in the All Star Game.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Well that Joe Kelly used to always say, closers have
- 7:14Speaker 2: it the best because their eras are lower than everyone
- 7:17Speaker 2: else is because they're bad. Inning never goes bad because
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's just a blown save and it's one earned or
- 7:21Speaker 2: two earned. They can never give up five, so they
- 7:24Speaker 2: can't have it. As you said, you can't have a
- 7:26Speaker 2: shitty era because you're a closer. The game is over
- 7:28Speaker 2: and they can't give up all your runs. He goes,
- 7:31Speaker 2: you come in and give up all my runs, but
- 7:32Speaker 2: I don't get to give up all yours. They just
- 7:34Speaker 2: stop the game. Thanks. So yeah, great point, typical joke, Keller,
- 7:39Speaker 2: Great point.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. Well, the reliever for the Cardinals that
- 7:43Speaker 1: got in, Riley O'Brien really excited. You know, hopefully he
- 7:46Speaker 1: can get it inning and have a little bit of fun. Uh,
- 7:49Speaker 1: let's move to the home run derby. You know it's
- 7:53Speaker 1: going to be a little different set up, like they
- 7:56Speaker 1: almost kind of like they used to do it. You know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: each hitter in the first round is going to get
- 7:59Speaker 1: twenty swings, not twenty pitches, not a time limit. It's
- 8:03Speaker 1: gonna be how many of those swings leave the ballpark.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You cannot end your round on a homer. So you know,
- 8:09Speaker 1: if your twentieth swings a homer, you get a twenty
- 8:12Speaker 1: first swing, and if that's a homer, you get a
- 8:14Speaker 1: twenty second swing. So I think it'll be a really
- 8:18Speaker 1: cool setup. Get hot at the end, and you can
- 8:21Speaker 1: make up a lot of distance, make up a lot
- 8:22Speaker 1: of room. So I think it'll be a lot of fun.
- 8:25Speaker 1: You know, you mentioned before just a few minutes ago.
- 8:27Speaker 1: You know, are we gonna have people taking pitches? Well, possibly,
- 8:31Speaker 1: but you know, the goal here is to watch people
- 8:33Speaker 1: hit homers. And I don't think it's gonna be any
- 8:35Speaker 1: longer than it was, you know before they did the timer.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But I think it's good we get timers out of
- 8:40Speaker 1: the game for a little bit. Let let these guys
- 8:42Speaker 1: sit up there and hit some homers, watch them a
- 8:44Speaker 1: little bit, admire them a little bit, and it'll be
- 8:47Speaker 1: a little bit of fun. So let's start with who
- 8:49Speaker 1: is your pick to win, and then we're gonna do
- 8:52Speaker 1: something fun where we draft the other six guys and
- 8:56Speaker 1: let's see who has more homer total at the end
- 8:58Speaker 1: of the night.
- 9:00Speaker 2: You can let me go first, Yeah, you go first,
- 9:02Speaker 2: go for all?
- 9:03Speaker 3: Right?
- 9:03Speaker 2: Well, I appreciate that. I'm going with Swarves right out
- 9:05Speaker 2: of the gate, and I knew you would probably pick
- 9:07Speaker 2: him too, so I'm glad you let me go first.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I was expecting to get a second pick.
- 9:12Speaker 1: No, I Shwarves Sharps was gonna be my pick. But
- 9:17Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna stick with the Philly connection and
- 9:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna pick Harper. I think, uh, I would be
- 9:26Speaker 1: in a lefty I think I mean citizens mank is
- 9:29Speaker 1: a phone booth, right, So I mean everybody's gonna be
- 9:32Speaker 1: hitting hitting homers there. But I do think the lefties
- 9:34Speaker 1: probably have a little bit of an advantage with right
- 9:37Speaker 1: center versus left center. So I'm gonna go Harper uh
- 9:40Speaker 1: as my pick to win. And you know, he's he's
- 9:43Speaker 1: the greatest showman. They call him that for a reason,
- 9:45Speaker 1: So uh, he's gonna he's gonna try to dip into
- 9:48Speaker 1: that Philly magic. And I think both those guys are
- 9:50Speaker 1: gonna have some.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Fun, all right. I like that one. Then now we go.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Now we got those are winners. Now let's figure out
- 9:56Speaker 2: our rest of our team. Get you will go, We'll
- 9:58Speaker 2: go Snake Draft, So you go?
- 9:59Speaker 1: Now, I think all right? Yeah, all right, So I
- 10:04Speaker 1: think I'm gonna go to a Arriety and I'm gonna
- 10:06Speaker 1: go to the raining champ. I'm gonna go to cam
- 10:08Speaker 1: and Narrow Uh to be my second pick.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with I'm gonna stay left him and
- 10:15Speaker 2: go with Rice.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Man.
- 10:17Speaker 1: He's got a bunch of homers this year toom.
- 10:21Speaker 3: You know what?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Uh? Oh, Snake Draft. You're right? So you got Shoreburn? Rice?
- 10:29Speaker 2: Am I going? Am I gonna stay lefty? Am I
- 10:32Speaker 2: gonna go? I think I'm gonna go heavy lefty. I
- 10:35Speaker 2: like there's nothing watching better than watching lefties swing and
- 10:39Speaker 2: hit home runs. I just remember Griffey Jr. And then
- 10:42Speaker 2: uh and Hamilton back in the day at Sammich So
- 10:45Speaker 2: was it always say his name wrong?
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah? All right, all right, so you've got all lefties
- 10:58Speaker 1: Shore Rice and Kaglion, Uh, Harper, Kimon ro Uh. You
- 11:05Speaker 1: know what, I'm gonna go with Walker because I'm you know,
- 11:10Speaker 1: just gonna take him making my third round selection, and
- 11:14Speaker 1: you know what, I don't. I feel like rookies and
- 11:17Speaker 1: young guys struggled a little bit, so this might be
- 11:20Speaker 1: a little bit uh of a of a risk here.
- 11:24Speaker 1: But murk Commy, I wonder. Nope, Nope, I'm going Contrarast.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I'm going with I'm going with the guy who who
- 11:35Speaker 1: loves the line the spotlight too, So I'm gonna go
- 11:38Speaker 1: with Walker Contreras. I think I'm gonna avoid I've already
- 11:43Speaker 1: got Walker my first year home run derby guy, so
- 11:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna avoid having two of those guys.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I'm gonna go mry commy. All right, sounds good to me.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I thought I was getting.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I thought I was getting contrasts at the end. To
- 11:57Speaker 2: be honest with you, that's why I picked the way
- 11:58Speaker 2: I did.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Round.
- 12:02Speaker 1: No, I think it would. That'll be fun lefty heavy
- 12:06Speaker 1: with comy for you. Yep, right here we go. It
- 12:12Speaker 1: should be a lot of fun. You do all right? Good?
- 12:20Speaker 1: All right? So one thing that we don't have Cardinals games,

- 13:36Speaker 1: Welcome back to Cardinal Territory. It's Lince Lynn and Kyle
- 13:38Speaker 1: Gibson here talking about some Cardinal baseball, some All Star baseball.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So if you missed the first part, go ahead and
- 13:44Speaker 1: rewind and you can listen to the whole thing. But
- 13:47Speaker 1: no Jim Hayes today the Big Cats on All Star Brave.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But Lance, the Cardinals just finished up the first half
- 13:53Speaker 1: with another series win against the Braves. Really close game yesterday.
- 13:58Speaker 1: You know, a couple unfortunate things happened with a clear
- 14:02Speaker 1: hit bitch uh and then you know unfortunate air there
- 14:06Speaker 1: in the ninth any. But what do you think about
- 14:08Speaker 1: the Cardinals how they face the Brewers lost the close games.
- 14:12Speaker 1: You know, the Brewers are just playing really well right now.
- 14:14Speaker 1: But you know they come back and get the series
- 14:16Speaker 1: win against the Braves. What kind of momentum can the
- 14:18Speaker 1: Cardinals use from that first half finish to come in
- 14:21Speaker 1: after the break and play well.
- 14:23Speaker 2: No, I think that, you know, I think you're looking
- 14:25Speaker 2: at a team that in general has played let's say,
- 14:28Speaker 2: above expectations, and they just keep doing it. So now
- 14:32Speaker 2: I think we're starting to see what we should expect
- 14:34Speaker 2: from them, right they bounce back every time they get
- 14:36Speaker 2: kind of kicked and knocked down a little bit, and
- 14:39Speaker 2: you start seeing them they figure out how to win series,
- 14:42Speaker 2: or they figure out how to not get swept. They
- 14:45Speaker 2: keep games close, they do They're doing a lot of
- 14:48Speaker 2: the little things that you need. So I think, all
- 14:50Speaker 2: in all, the first half was a huge success, and
- 14:54Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to, uh, you know, seeing how they
- 14:57Speaker 2: how they come back after the break, what it looks like,
- 15:00Speaker 2: what they're you know, you know, what they're their ideas
- 15:04Speaker 2: are going to be. So yeah, I think I think
- 15:06Speaker 2: that into the end of the first half with the
- 15:08Speaker 2: Braves winning the series, doing what they've done, all in
- 15:13Speaker 2: all has been a you know, a great first half
- 15:14Speaker 2: if you if you look at you know, what the
- 15:16Speaker 2: projections were to start the year. So now after the break,
- 15:19Speaker 2: we get a regroup and see what we uh, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 2: what we're made of and what that push looks like.
- 15:24Speaker 2: You know, we've all gone through it, you and I.
- 15:26Speaker 2: It's a difference down the stretch when you've got to
- 15:28Speaker 2: go for it and you're you know, you're trying to
- 15:30Speaker 2: make playoff pushes, so they put themselves in a good
- 15:33Speaker 2: spot to do that. So I think all fans should
- 15:35Speaker 2: be excited for that.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, probably not going
- 15:41Speaker 1: to come down to a head to add season series
- 15:44Speaker 1: win for the Cardinals when it comes to the wildcard spot,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but it's always great to have, you know, the Phillies
- 15:50Speaker 1: have been playing really well. Uh if they do pass
- 15:52Speaker 1: the braves when and at least Cardinals stay and where
- 15:55Speaker 1: they're at, that could be kind of a big, a
- 15:57Speaker 1: big season series win when comes out last spot for
- 16:01Speaker 1: the wildcard. So I think that's always a good thing
- 16:03Speaker 1: when you're being the teams ahead of you. Obviously they
- 16:06Speaker 1: played really well in this series. You know, they would
- 16:09Speaker 1: have had a chance to walk it off if not
- 16:10Speaker 1: for obviously that kind of weird hit by pitch instance
- 16:14Speaker 1: that clearly Ali didn't like. Uh. I did like to
- 16:17Speaker 1: see the fans they were they were on their feet,
- 16:20Speaker 1: given all a nice round of applause. Is he walked
- 16:23Speaker 1: off the field after being thrown out, and uh, hopefully
- 16:26Speaker 1: we can get maybe a little bit of lip reading
- 16:28Speaker 1: on that interaction because I think all that kind of
- 16:32Speaker 1: right there.
- 16:33Speaker 2: It's specially when he gets going. Some of the things
- 16:35Speaker 2: that that that comes out of his mouth are special.
- 16:38Speaker 2: And I think he tied Whitey Herzog for a second
- 16:40Speaker 2: all time for most ejections. So he's getting his name
- 16:43Speaker 2: where it needs to be for the Cardinals all time manager.
- 16:46Speaker 2: The only person he asks to catch is Larusa, And
- 16:49Speaker 2: then you're looking at hey, if you if you managed
- 16:52Speaker 2: long enough to beat Larusa and Whitey and ejections, you've
- 16:56Speaker 2: done it right. So he's on pace.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I like it.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. The ground ball there, obviously, the Mason unfortunate,
- 17:05Speaker 1: a Gold Globe guy that I don't know, obviously was
- 17:07Speaker 1: hot human who knows. I'm guessing that ball just got away.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But like I said, the Cardinals playing really well down
- 17:13Speaker 1: the stretch. One thing that they have not done well though,
- 17:17Speaker 1: is they haven't finished games against the Brewers. What did
- 17:20Speaker 1: I mean? Obviously, the Brewers are really good, you know,
- 17:22Speaker 1: one of the best teams in baseball, not only record wise,
- 17:25Speaker 1: but just how they're playing. You know, they're a team
- 17:27Speaker 1: that always outperforms expectations. People expected the Cubs to kind
- 17:31Speaker 1: of run away the last couple of years with this
- 17:33Speaker 1: division and the Brewers just keep coming back and doing it,
- 17:37Speaker 1: you know, with with big time starts like from Harrison.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I mean they Misowski's obviously turned it into an ace.
- 17:44Speaker 1: What do you think the Cardinals need to do here
- 17:46Speaker 1: in the second half? You know, I don't know how
- 17:49Speaker 1: much they're going to be able to close the division gap,
- 17:51Speaker 1: but when it comes to a three game or a
- 17:54Speaker 1: five game series if they play the Brewers, what is
- 17:57Speaker 1: something that the Cardinals need to do in your mind
- 18:00Speaker 1: to possibly come out on top because it's really tough.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I feel like when a team has your number, kind
- 18:05Speaker 1: of like a Brewers seem like they have this year.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I think when you see a team like that
- 18:10Speaker 2: and the Brewers just don't give games away, right, I
- 18:13Speaker 2: think that's the main thing down the stretch. The Cardinals
- 18:16Speaker 2: are a young team, So when you play a team
- 18:18Speaker 2: like the Brewers that do not give games away, usually
- 18:21Speaker 2: younger teams will make that mistake or not make that play.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So I think down the stretch, not worrying about so
- 18:30Speaker 2: much Milwaukee is when you're down the stretch here, it's hey,
- 18:34Speaker 2: how can we make that play or get that one
- 18:37Speaker 2: hit or strike that one guy out to win the
- 18:41Speaker 2: game or situation or a series and stuff like that.
- 18:45Speaker 2: And as a young team they're able to do it
- 18:49Speaker 2: for the most part all year so far, but for
- 18:51Speaker 2: some reason it's Milwaukee. They don't so realize that, hey,
- 18:55Speaker 2: just because you're playing Milwaukee and you don't have to
- 18:57Speaker 2: have or it doesn't have to be to have to
- 19:00Speaker 2: you have to make it more than it is just
- 19:02Speaker 2: because it's a division opponent. You know, in the playoffs
- 19:05Speaker 2: that will be heightened if you get there. But right now,
- 19:08Speaker 2: you have to take one game at a time, and
- 19:10Speaker 2: every team that you're playing the same way. It's how
- 19:13Speaker 2: do we stay in the game, how do we not
- 19:15Speaker 2: give them the game or give them a situation to
- 19:18Speaker 2: have the upper hand in each game. And as a
- 19:21Speaker 2: young team, if you start doing that series game in
- 19:24Speaker 2: and game out series as you go down the stretch here,
- 19:27Speaker 2: that will make it easier to accomplish those things in
- 19:30Speaker 2: the playoffs, because every true playoff team will be like Milwaukee,
- 19:34Speaker 2: where you can't give them that one little thing that
- 19:37Speaker 2: might give them an edge in a game. And it
- 19:39Speaker 2: seems to be like every time the situation happens, Milwaukee
- 19:42Speaker 2: makes the play or the Cardinals don't quite make the play,
- 19:45Speaker 2: or something happens where it's always in Milwaukee's favor. But
- 19:48Speaker 2: figure out what those are and be aware of them
- 19:51Speaker 2: and figure and fix them just as the time goes
- 19:53Speaker 2: on this season, so you're ready to go when you
- 19:55Speaker 2: know playoffs do happen. Hopefully.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah. This was one thing, excuse me, that we talked
- 20:01Speaker 1: about in Baltimore before twenty twenty three, having a young team,
- 20:05Speaker 1: having a team that you know on paper wasn't just
- 20:08Speaker 1: gonna be a runaway for frequent the playoff spot. We
- 20:11Speaker 1: talked a lot about making sure we're doing the right
- 20:14Speaker 1: things so that we're not giving extra outs, we're not
- 20:17Speaker 1: giving free bases. If we do that, then we're gonna
- 20:20Speaker 1: have a chance to win every game. I think that's
- 20:22Speaker 1: something the Cardinals in the second half is going to
- 20:24Speaker 1: be important. Playoff push everything is when you're facing these teams.
- 20:29Speaker 1: It's one thing that Milwaukee does really well. They don't
- 20:32Speaker 1: give you extra extra chances, and when you're facing those teams,
- 20:35Speaker 1: you can't give in. You can't give extra chances, you know,
- 20:37Speaker 1: down the stretch, especially late in the games, we're gonna
- 20:40Speaker 1: take a quick break, finish up with the next two
- 20:42Speaker 1: weeks for the Cardinals for watching Carbon Territory.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Many people have this problem. I want to eat healthy.
- 20:51Speaker 5: I have the willpower, I don't have the time and
- 20:54Speaker 5: the organization. I need help. What do you do?
- 20:57Speaker 4: I mean you go to Factor. I got two boys
- 20:59Speaker 4: that look for the gains and they always come in
- 21:01Speaker 4: the house which I'm looking for food. Now they have
- 21:06Speaker 4: actual healthy food that is great for them, and you
- 21:09Speaker 4: know what, it's ready in the fridge for them to
- 21:11Speaker 4: pop in and make it right away.
- 21:13Speaker 5: And they have meals built around your goals. It could
- 21:16Speaker 5: be weight loss, overall nutrition gains, more protein, fresh never frozen,
- 21:22Speaker 5: over one hundred rotating weekly meals, including globally inspired flavors
- 21:27Speaker 5: like Mediterranean and Asian. I get all kinds of different
- 21:30Speaker 5: salads from Factor that I love, quick easy. They can
- 21:34Speaker 5: be ready in two minutes. Head to Factor Meals dot com.
- 21:37Speaker 5: Slash foul fifty off and use code foul fifty o
- 21:42Speaker 5: FF to get fifty percent off and free daily greens
- 21:44Speaker 5: per box with new subscription only, while supplies last until
- 21:48Speaker 5: nine twenty seven, twenty twenty six.
- 21:50Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to Cardinal Territory. Lance Lynn Kyle
- 21:53Speaker 1: Gibson here. No Jim Hayes and kind of a nice
- 21:56Speaker 1: back and forth. Ya haven't had to deal with some
- 21:59Speaker 1: of his questions every now and that he comes out
- 22:01Speaker 1: of right field, you know. Anyways, we got two weeks
- 22:05Speaker 1: here basically, once they get games going until the trade deadline.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I'm looking at the schedule now, they're in Arizona, they're
- 22:13Speaker 1: in LA. They come back home for one game against Arizona,
- 22:17Speaker 1: and then they have Cincinnati for three before they have
- 22:20Speaker 1: the Cups come to town. And then the Toronto first
- 22:24Speaker 1: game is right before the deadline. So important two weeks here,
- 22:28Speaker 1: I think you know, as former players, I think you
- 22:31Speaker 1: and I both are in the same boat here, is
- 22:33Speaker 1: that we want to win. We want the team to
- 22:35Speaker 1: add people at the deadline, not subtract. I know there's
- 22:39Speaker 1: a long term plan here for the Cardinals. Him's got
- 22:42Speaker 1: a plan in place. We'll see, you know how this
- 22:44Speaker 1: happens at the deadline. But with a few teams here,
- 22:47Speaker 1: especially the start, that are beatable and teams below you
- 22:51Speaker 1: in record and standings. You know, three six, you got
- 22:55Speaker 1: ten games here to open up with teams that are
- 22:58Speaker 1: not as good as you on paper. How important do
- 23:01Speaker 1: you think these next two weeks are or do you
- 23:04Speaker 1: think the mind's been made up here? And even if
- 23:06Speaker 1: the Cardinals go on a stretch of you know, eight
- 23:09Speaker 1: and two here in the first next ten, does it
- 23:12Speaker 1: matter or what's your thoughts on that?
- 23:16Speaker 2: I think an eight and two might be like, Okay,
- 23:20Speaker 2: what can we add that isn't going to let's say,
- 23:25Speaker 2: deplete our system. You know, what are some things that
- 23:29Speaker 2: we're okay with giving up to give this a go?
- 23:34Speaker 2: So I think an eight and two does that? Does it? Two?
- 23:37Speaker 2: Does it? Two? And eight automatically go to what the
- 23:42Speaker 2: you know what the game plan was all year? I
- 23:46Speaker 2: don't know if that does either. I think they're in
- 23:48Speaker 2: a weird boat because you're looking at you're starting to
- 23:51Speaker 2: see some young guys. Well with the extension to JJ,
- 23:54Speaker 2: I think there might be some other guys that could
- 23:57Speaker 2: be in that ballpark. Two. And as you know, when
- 24:02Speaker 2: you have a lot of young guys, there comes a
- 24:05Speaker 2: time when everyone needs a forty man spot. So I
- 24:09Speaker 2: know that they should have a good idea when these
- 24:11Speaker 2: guys are coming into needing the forty man spot all
- 24:15Speaker 2: that good stuff. So there's usually three or four guys
- 24:19Speaker 2: that are going to be let's say expendable because you're
- 24:23Speaker 2: not going to have a room for them, You really aren't.
- 24:26Speaker 2: So who are they? What can they get you to
- 24:28Speaker 2: help this team not only this year, but maybe even
- 24:31Speaker 2: next year and help your window. So I think that's
- 24:35Speaker 2: where that How can we add by giving guys away
- 24:39Speaker 2: that are expendable because our forty man roster with Because
- 24:42Speaker 2: here's what everybody needs to realize. This team's really young.
- 24:45Speaker 2: So your forty man roster is already up there and
- 24:49Speaker 2: it's young in age, but it's also you have all
- 24:51Speaker 2: these guys that are coming behind them and double a
- 24:53Speaker 2: triple ay. As you and I have seen in our careers,
- 24:56Speaker 2: is you're going to have to get rid of some guys.
- 24:58Speaker 2: So why not get rid of them in a fashion
- 25:00Speaker 2: to make a playoff push? Because it makes it a
- 25:02Speaker 2: little bit more worth it, that's my opinion. So I
- 25:05Speaker 2: makes you to see if they do something like that
- 25:06Speaker 2: where it's like, hey, we're not giving up any of
- 25:08Speaker 2: our top ten prospects, but pick prospects from eleven to
- 25:13Speaker 2: twenty might not ever get a chance because we don't
- 25:17Speaker 2: have forty mini spots for them. So how can we
- 25:18Speaker 2: use those guys to get us big League guys now
- 25:21Speaker 2: to make this push, so I makes you to see
- 25:23Speaker 2: if they do something like that.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I do think it's very interesting because I think we
- 25:28Speaker 1: both believe that there's a few guys on this team
- 25:31Speaker 1: that contenders are going to want and can really be
- 25:35Speaker 1: difference makers. You know, Jojo Romero is a really big
- 25:38Speaker 1: left handed arm out of the pen, and he's been
- 25:40Speaker 1: throwing the ball well. Dustin May is the starter that
- 25:42Speaker 1: you know, we both would probably like to see stay
- 25:45Speaker 1: here long term. Yeah, I mean, it's it's a it
- 25:48Speaker 1: shouldbutioning Riley O'Brien. You know, I know Age seems to
- 25:52Speaker 1: be a factor there, but with team control, you know,
- 25:55Speaker 1: that's a that's a really good arm. If you're adding
- 25:58Speaker 1: that to your pen, you're probably not going to have
- 25:59Speaker 1: him a closer if you're a contender. But my word,
- 26:02Speaker 1: you put that stuff into seventh or eighth inning, that
- 26:05Speaker 1: really shortens the game for you. The thing that I
- 26:07Speaker 1: think is interesting here the next two weeks, if you
- 26:10Speaker 1: look at Miami and Philly is their schedules. I probably
- 26:15Speaker 1: think that Saint Louis needs to be either tied with
- 26:20Speaker 1: or ahead of Philly or Chicago to really press the
- 26:23Speaker 1: hand here of the front office. So when it comes
- 26:26Speaker 1: to Philly, they play the Mets, open up the Dodgers Yankees,
- 26:30Speaker 1: and then Miami. Miami plays in Milwaukee, and then they
- 26:35Speaker 1: have San Diego mixed in. I think they have a
- 26:37Speaker 1: lesser team in between the two, and then Philly Chicago
- 26:41Speaker 1: plays kind of middle of the road teams. I think Detroit,
- 26:45Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and maybe one other team. But I think it
- 26:49Speaker 1: should be if the Cardinals, by the time they're playing
- 26:52Speaker 1: the Cubs, if they have a chance that series will
- 26:54Speaker 1: be over before the deadline. I think those first two
- 26:57Speaker 1: games of that four game series could really press the
- 27:00Speaker 1: hand of time in the front office. And if the
- 27:02Speaker 1: Cardinals win those first two games that series, and they
- 27:05Speaker 1: played well in the ten before and now all of
- 27:07Speaker 1: a sudden you're a game or two ahead of the Cubs,
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think it really forces the hand a little bit
- 27:13Speaker 1: to say, hey, I think this is something that we
- 27:15Speaker 1: need to add. If you have a rough ten games
- 27:18Speaker 1: and now the first game against the Cubs doesn't go
- 27:22Speaker 1: your way and you're three games behind Philly, your two
- 27:25Speaker 1: games out of the wild card, you're six behind Cubs,
- 27:29Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna have a choice other than
- 27:31Speaker 1: to kind of go with their long term plan. I
- 27:33Speaker 1: don't love it, but that's kind of how I see
- 27:36Speaker 1: it working out.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I'll make to see what they do. Man, You've got, like,
- 27:41Speaker 2: you got guys that are on the forty man that
- 27:43Speaker 2: have been passed by people, but they're still young and
- 27:46Speaker 2: they still have some value. And then you have forty
- 27:49Speaker 2: man guys that are going to have to be added
- 27:50Speaker 2: to the roster next year that are in Douba Tribaa
- 27:54Speaker 2: that are high prospects. So what are those guys that
- 27:57Speaker 2: have been quote unquote passed over by the people that
- 28:00Speaker 2: are already on this roster that are even the same
- 28:02Speaker 2: age or are younger. How can you use those pieces
- 28:07Speaker 2: to get something to like make it? It at least
- 28:10Speaker 2: gives a little bit like, hey, hey, we're adding some
- 28:13Speaker 2: things that are going to help you because you know,
- 28:15Speaker 2: we're giving these guys a chance to move on because
- 28:17Speaker 2: it didn't work here. They've been passed by you know,
- 28:20Speaker 2: someone below them or you know younger, whatever it may be.
- 28:23Speaker 2: They just just hadn't worked out for him here. So
- 28:26Speaker 2: I mean, they have some pieces that can bring back
- 28:30Speaker 2: even rentals. Right, It's like, hey, we're gonna have to
- 28:33Speaker 2: do some roster crunching anyways, So let's get something for
- 28:35Speaker 2: him now and then maybe they can go for another
- 28:37Speaker 2: team and have some sort of success. But for us there,
- 28:41Speaker 2: they've been kind of they've been passed, So let's see
- 28:44Speaker 2: if we get something for him now. So I'm anxious
- 28:46Speaker 2: to see what the break and tails of how they're
- 28:50Speaker 2: going to do it, because, as you know, when you're
- 28:53Speaker 2: super young as they are, you're gonna lose guys because
- 28:57Speaker 2: of how young you are because you can't hold onto
- 28:59Speaker 2: everybody with the four man the way it's going to be,
- 29:01Speaker 2: and they're gonna have to add things externally next offseason
- 29:06Speaker 2: to start the push too. So what are some pieces
- 29:09Speaker 2: that are young that are on your forty man that
- 29:11Speaker 2: you can maybe start adding for next year now with
- 29:15Speaker 2: those guys, because you know you're gonna have too many
- 29:16Speaker 2: guys on the forty man, so there's ways to do it.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I'm anxious to see it, but I'm all for adding now,
- 29:22Speaker 2: but also have control over what you're adding now, especially
- 29:25Speaker 2: if you have a lot of assets that are all
- 29:28Speaker 2: going to be tied into forty man spots at the
- 29:30Speaker 2: same time, you can't ever everybody go to arbitration. You
- 29:33Speaker 2: can't everybody go to free agency. You can't everybody need
- 29:35Speaker 2: to be on the forty man at the same time,
- 29:37Speaker 2: or you're in a shit problem. So I'm anxious to
- 29:39Speaker 2: see how how how he maneuvers all this because there's
- 29:43Speaker 2: been a lot of those things going on right now.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Definitely gonna be a lot of shuffling. I think that's
- 29:49Speaker 1: one of all those points you made are one of
- 29:52Speaker 1: the reasons why I think trading some of these guys
- 29:53Speaker 1: away and packaging them to get certain pieces that it
- 29:57Speaker 1: really makes sense going forward. But I get it, we're
- 30:00Speaker 1: into the future. You want to give these guys as
- 30:01Speaker 1: much time as possible to figure out who's going to
- 30:03Speaker 1: be your long term and see which of those guys
- 30:05Speaker 1: you're gonna need, you know, down on the farm later on.
- 30:08Speaker 1: But all right, Lance, until next time, Well, you know
- 30:11Speaker 1: what I want to mention. I don't think we got
- 30:13Speaker 1: the chance to congratulate Avon Herrera on the All Star Game.
- 30:17Speaker 1: It was after Thursday Show. Huge congratulations to Evon. Herrera
- 30:22Speaker 1: has been a staple now the last few years for
- 30:25Speaker 1: these Cardinals. Has hit the ball so well as catching
- 30:29Speaker 1: his defense. He's really worked hard on it. The hands
- 30:32Speaker 1: far away from the body, really excited for him. So
- 30:36Speaker 1: good luck to avon the All Star Game, good luck
- 30:38Speaker 1: to Jordan Walker tonight in the home run derby in
- 30:40Speaker 1: the All Star Game, and Riley O'Brien hopefully he makes
- 30:43Speaker 1: it in the game and throws will also. But we'll
- 30:45Speaker 1: see you guys next time on Cardinal Territory where we'll talk
- 30:48Speaker 1: more about the second half and enjoy the All Star
- 30:50Speaker 1: Break and enjoy Home Run Durban the All Star Game.
- 30:52Speaker 1: And we'll see you next time on Cardinal Territory. Thanks
- 30:54Speaker 1: for
