- 0:22Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Tortured Fans Department podcast.
- 0:28As always, I'm your host, Sean Boyle, and joining me today, it's one of our most recurring guests.
- 0:33It's a good friend.
- 0:35It is none other than one of the cousins, the better half, I'll add.
- 0:40It is Mr.
- 0:40Jeremy Good.
- 0:41Jeremy, how are you?
- 0:42Your words, not mine.
- 0:43Sean, I do approve the message.
- 0:45Hello, how are you?
- 0:46Great to be back.
- 0:47Great to, you know, shed some of the other voices that we've joined on the show.
- 0:51Not that they're not great, but you know, it's great to have one-on-one time.
- 0:55That's right.
- 0:56And it's a laid-back vibe.
- 0:58We've got good weather outside.
- 0:59There's a lot going on, but nothing too serious, nothing too intense.
- 1:03So we're just going to kick back, shoot the shit for a little bit, and talk about sports and then some other topics as we go on.
- 1:11Jeremy, I have to start by just a few housekeeping items.
- 1:14We launched the record club last week, which I'm not sure if you saw, but our first episode was with myself and Ryan Amade, who's been a regular on this program.
- 1:24We dove deep into Fleetwood Max rumors.
- 1:28The idea of the Record Club is for all of you, listeners, friends, fans, whatever, to get a chance to come on and talk about a record you are passionate about.
- 1:37So, Jeremy, you will obviously be doing one of these in in the future.
- 1:40I'm interested to know where you're leaning in terms of what album you'll select.
- 1:45Well, I'd have to do some research on some things.
- 1:47I have a diverse portfolio in the music scene.
- 1:50But, you know, right now, right here, if you needed me quickly for something, I'll give you some on the problem, Morgan Wallen.
- 1:57I'll be able to give you a good some good stuff on that.
- 2:00You know, I got I'm also good on uh Bruce Springsteen, The Rising album, one of my favorite albums.
- 2:05I know I think I mentioned this actually on the pod several pods ago, so I could give you some insight on that and some other things as well.
- 2:12But those are the first two hitters that uh, you know, I feel like I could throw some uh inspiration towards the listeners, I guess.
- 2:20Yeah, no, the first one's a veto from we're a strict no Morgan Wallen show.
- 2:25So unfortunately that one's out.
- 2:27Bruce, I'd be happy to have you.
- 2:28I'd be happy to have you.
- 2:29I know you're a Billy Joel guy, too.
- 2:30Maybe we can dive into that catalog a little bit.
- 2:32The Stranger, yeah, that would be great too.
- 2:34Sure.
- 2:35I see I I might know you guys better than you.
- 2:38Probably.
- 2:39Probably, obviously.
- 2:40Also, on the music note, the two of us will be going to the Noah Khan concert together this month now.
- 2:45So big, big stuff happening at the Torture Fans Department.
- 2:49Also, have to plug our Friends on Football podcast, which falls under the Torture Fans umbrella.
- 2:54We are pumping out World Cup previews this week.
- 2:58So please go over to that platform, like, subscribe, leave a comment, leave a review.
- 3:03We would appreciate that.
- 3:04We're putting a lot of work into that this week in the buildup to the World Cup, and then we'll start to shift our focus back over to this channel as the summer goes on.
- 3:12Also, one final reminder: go listen to the cookout draft before the poll is released this week.
- 3:18Jeremy, you took part in this and you provided some great moments.
- 3:22The baked potato clip is doing the rounds on social media.
- 3:26How do you think your draft performance went?
- 3:28Well, I love my draft.
- 3:29I love my team.
- 3:30Every draft I draft, I love.
- 3:32Yeah, it's just it's it's a good, it's a group, good group.
- 3:35I'm confident in them.
- 3:37I think uh if the goal is to draft just like the heavy hitters, the first things you think, maybe my draft isn't for you.
- 3:44Maybe the baked bean lovers are gonna be locked in.
- 3:46I don't know.
- 3:47But uh, and the hot dog people too.
- 3:49That's not the first thing I'd grab, but okay.
- 3:52I I like my draft.
- 3:53I think it's a good, like I said, good array of uh cookout stuff, and uh it really speaks to the mass amount of people out there, so I'm happy.
- 4:01I'm not so sure it's speaking to the masses, but I'm happy that you're happy with it.
- 4:06I think it's gonna be a close ballot.
- 4:07I'll say that.
- 4:08I'm I'm I might lose my first draft ever.
- 4:10So that's something to monitor as as the week progresses.
- 4:14The poll will be released on Thursday, so we'll see.
- 4:17We do know who runs these polls and who can make some strings, you know, you know, can move some things around.
- 4:23So don't be so uh sure that you might not win this one.
- 4:27That's that's all again, alleged, alleged wrongdoings.
- 4:31I don't think those are there's any truth behind them.
- 4:33Jarrell, let's dive into the NBA finals.
- 4:36They begin on Wednesday night.
- 4:37The stage is set for the New York Knicks to take on the San Antonio Spurs.
- 4:43It's an interesting finals.
- 4:45I will say that.
- 4:46I thought for sure that we would get whoever won the Western Conference would be a cakewalk champion, and I don't think that any longer.
- 4:53I think that the Knicks have proven to be a much more formidable opponent than I was giving them credit for.
- 4:59And I think we're in store for a pretty exciting finals.
- 5:03What do you think about the matchup?
- 5:05Yeah, I was pretty locked into the team, whoever came out of the West, regardless if it was OKC, San Antonio.
- 5:12The Knicks have been playing good basketball.
- 5:14They changed things up towards the end of the year where they're running their offense uh through cat at the high post.
- 5:20He's able to dribble, he's able to shoot, he's able to create, and also pass the ball, which is big.
- 5:24That's really worked for the Knicks.
- 5:26I want to give them their credit.
- 5:28They've blown through the playoffs, they swept the Sixers in the second round.
- 5:32They swept Cleveland in the in the Eastern Conference uh finals.
- 5:37They've gone on a run.
- 5:38Give them credit.
- 5:39I still think San Antonio is much better.
- 5:42Uh, they have Wemby, who I think will take over the series.
- 5:46They have a lot of shooters to go with him, they defend like crazy.
- 5:50I don't think it'll be a sweep.
- 5:52I think it'll be maybe six for the Spurs.
- 5:55I thought last year OKC was gonna run away with it against Indiana.
- 5:59It won seven games.
- 6:01Indiana almost won the whole series.
- 6:03So maybe this is kind of similar where the East catches up.
- 6:06I still think the Spurs are a better team, but I think the Knicks are kind of playing with Fool's Gold.
- 6:11They just haven't beaten anyone good in the playoffs.
- 6:13I think the only team that they could have beat that was good is the Celtics.
- 6:16I don't even know how good they were, and of course the Sixers knocked them out.
- 6:19So we'll see.
- 6:20It'll be interesting, exciting.
- 6:22Definitely go Spurs go for sure.
- 6:23I can't handle uh a Knicks championship.
- 6:26I'm with you in terms of my rooting interest, it lies firmly with the Spurs.
- 6:31I do not want a Knicks title for a multitude of reasons, the biggest one being their obnoxious fan base, including some personal friends of ours.
- 6:41I will note I don't think it's fool's gold for the Knicks.
- 6:46I I also don't disagree with your point that the East, it's hard to tell who was good that they beat.
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:52But the margin in which they're beating teams, I think, is the impressive part.
- 6:56They're not even in basketball games with these, they're just running teams out of the gym in do or die situations, too.
- 7:02So it's been impressive from the Knicks.
- 7:04I do think they've figured something out and unlocked a new level.
- 7:06Whether that will be enough to beat the Spurs will be interesting.
- 7:10I'm a big fan of what I saw from the Spurs team.
- 7:13Just gritty, gritty basketball in that seven game series with the Thunder.
- 7:17They went to OKC in a game seven and they were just a tougher team.
- 7:20When Banyama, you can tell how much it meant to him as a 22-year-old.
- 7:24I mean, that guy, he's an alien, and the fact that he cares like that, in addition to all the physical tools he has, is uh that's scary.
- 7:31So give me the Spurs in seven will be my official pick.
- 7:35I do see it being a good series, and I think you brought up last year's finals as I think it's gonna be similar.
- 7:41Hopefully, there's no Achilles Terror like there was with Tyrese Halburton, which obviously that that played a big role in the finals.
- 7:47Yeah.
- 7:48If there were going to be an Achilles Terror, I don't again, I don't want there to be, but if there were to be, I wouldn't hate for it to be Jalen Brunson's.
- 7:57Yeah, I mean, uh if it ha you know, it if it happens, things happen.
- 8:02That's the game.
- 8:03We don't want we don't want it.
- 8:04We don't want it, but uh yeah, I think of course emotionally I'm picking the Spurs talent-wise, skill-wise, I'm picking the Spurs.
- 8:12I think they might smack the Knicks early on.
- 8:14I don't think the Knicks will ever recover.
- 8:16Maybe they'll win a game or two and they'll kind of make it a series, but like I think the Spurs are just gonna be too overwhelming.
- 8:22And maybe that that's what hurts the Knicks, the fact that like no one really matched up with them in the East, especially defensively, and now they're gonna have a maybe a juggernaut team and the Spurs come their way.
- 8:32It'll be good, it'll be fun.
- 8:34Yeah, it's also two historic brands of basketball.
- 8:38The Knicks having the finals at the Garden for the first time since '99, that's pretty cool.
- 8:43Even if you don't like them, that's an iconic venue.
- 8:46And then the Spurs, I mean, this could be the start of another dynasty, which we saw throughout the 2000s.
- 8:51There's a lot of similarities between Duncan's first appearance and Wembinama's.
- 8:55I hope that maybe we don't see a run quite like that again.
- 8:59It they don't have the legendary coach on their side in this in this version of the team, but boy oh boy, the nucleus that they have and how young they are.
- 9:06It's hard to not see them being in and around the finals almost every year.
- 9:11Yeah, you gotta start somewhere with uh Mitch.
- 9:14Maybe this is a starting point.
- 9:15It's not like the Spurs have had an elite player come from France and just be a poster child for their team for a decade plus.
- 9:22So we haven't seen that strip before, and uh maybe this is the first time we'll see it.
- 9:29And also just the fact that they win the draft lottery when there is a when there is a generational French talent, yeah, it's uncanny.
- 9:37It does help.
- 9:38So we'll be keeping an eye on the NBA Finals.
- 9:40We'll talk more about it as the series progresses.
- 9:42I kind of do hope it's a good series.
- 9:43I don't want to see a sweep or anything in either direction.
- 9:46And I would like to see some close games as well.
- 9:48Yeah, it's one thing for the series to be close, but a lot of times it felt like throughout these NBA playoffs, the series was close, but then each game in the series was a blowout, and we've gotten very few really close good games.
- 9:58So hopefully we at least see some tight action down the stretch.
- 10:02Totally.
- 10:03Let's talk about the NFL, Jeremy.
- 10:05We have a couple of big trades to get to.
- 10:08I guess let's cross off first the one that we've known about for months.
- 10:11The receiving variable trade really was what this one will be remembered for.
- 10:17It is also the AJ Brown deal.
- 10:19Jeremy, talk me through exactly what the trade was, first of all, because I I know it's I think it's a first-round pick, but I don't know when.
- 10:26And then talk me through your thoughts as an Eagles fan.
- 10:29The trade is AJ Brown to New England, of course, for their 2028 first round pick.
- 10:36And 2027 fifth.
- 10:39So it's a first and a fifth.
- 10:40The first comes in two years.
- 10:43Howie won a first from the start.
- 10:45That's great.
- 10:46It's sad for me as an Eagles fan, as an AJ fan, because he's done so much for the team.
- 10:51The Eagles have had their best five, six-year stretch in probably team history.
- 10:57Going to two Super Bowls when he won, AJ was a major part in that.
- 11:00It's sad how things have kind of transpired.
- 11:03It's a tough loss, too, because he's such a dynamic player, such a great player.
- 11:08These are the types of players that teams want to trade for.
- 11:12I think that we get what gets lost in the sauce is these are the players that good teams that want to be great want to trade for, but they don't originally have.
- 11:23And the Eagles are worse off for it right now, at least.
- 11:26In the future, we'll see how they'll bounce back, but they're definitely a worse team off now.
- 11:30I think the compensation is a little light.
- 11:33Jalen Waddell went for a first, a third, and a fourth round pick swap.
- 11:37He's a year younger.
- 11:39AJ Brown, and and I've Jalen Waddell is one of my guys, roll tied.
- 11:44But he's nowhere close to AJ Brown.
- 11:47DJ Moore went for a second round pick who's older than AJ Brown.
- 11:50Nowhere, nice, nice player.
- 11:52Nowhere close to AJ Brown.
- 11:54So I think that the compensation's a little light.
- 11:56I think they wanted to get this deal done to move on officially.
- 11:59Just unfortunate.
- 12:01And uh now for the Eagles, they move on, and we see how they adjust with Devontae Smith, rookie Mikhail Lemon, Wicks, and uh yeah, we'll see.
- 12:11It's a new kind of feels like a new era in Philadelphia football.
- 12:14So big move for both teams in their own way.
- 12:17I think from an on-the-field standpoint, there certainly is something to be said that the Eagles did get worse.
- 12:23I agree.
- 12:24It's hard to argue.
- 12:25AJ Brown is physically just one of the best receivers in the NFL.
- 12:28He's imposing, he's immediately somebody you have to game plan around.
- 12:31I also think that there might be a bit of levity in the locker room now.
- 12:37There always just seemed to be, at least more recently in the last couple of seasons, I would say, there always just seemed to be something percolating around AJ Brown and Jalen Hurts, or just around AJ Brown himself, like in his orbit when he's reading a book on the sidelines, or cryptic messages post-game, just typical wide receiver one diva shit, which which we've seen a million times throughout the NFL.
- 12:59There's every all these wide receiver ones have that ego, that diva mentality at times.
- 13:04And AJ, I would say he was moody for the last year.
- 13:07And even his comments since he got to New England, he's been there for a cup of coffee, and he's already saying how this was his dream and this is his home, and he's had a Patriots rug in his house, even though when he was on the Eagles, it's like, okay, AJ, enough's enough.
- 13:20And that's not exactly commendable that you're just a Patriots fan because they won a lot when you were younger.
- 13:26So I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing.
- 13:28And my guy, Devontae Smith, now gets a chance to be the number one.
- 13:32I've always been a big Smitty guy.
- 13:33I'm happy for him.
- 13:35I do think the Eagles are a little bit worse off, but it might be in some ways addition by subtraction, just getting off of that contract, getting the bad vibes out of the locker room.
- 13:43They eat a lot cap-wise in the in dead cap 27 million.
- 13:48They still have cash that they're able to give out decently.
- 13:53Maybe this move allows them to pay for their young defense that they're gonna have to pay.
- 13:57So in the next few years, hopefully it frees up some things, and it'll be interesting how they adjust uh now immediately going to this season.
- 14:04And one thing also to watch as the season progresses will be I don't know if it's necessarily fair, but people will be comparing how Jalen Hurts performs to how AJ Brown performs.
- 14:14That's just gonna be natural.
- 14:16So I know it's it's gonna be an interesting season for Eagles supporters because it's kind of make or break in some ways for just what level of good Jalen Hurts is.
- 14:27Is he elite or is he good?
- 14:29And I think now we're gonna get a really good, we're gonna get a good sample size of what he is.
- 14:34That's a great point, Sean.
- 14:36There's always something going on in Philadelphia when the team's 14 and 3, when the team's 7 and 10.
- 14:41It does, it's it just depends on the mood and the record, but it's always something.
- 14:46And we we will see.
- 14:47Be careful what some people wish for because uh it can go south.
- 14:51We've seen it go south here.
- 14:53It's not fun, and uh yeah, so one that's why I've always been one in doubt.
- 14:58Talent, talent, talent.
- 15:00You go for the guys.
- 15:01So it'll be it'll be as a diehard fan, it might not be fun for me, but it'll definitely be revealing to the world to see what happens uh because of this.
- 15:10Interesting for sure.
- 15:11A little foreshadowing of where maybe Jeremy thinks Jalen Hurst might might end up.
- 15:16I I will say it's not always sunny in Philadelphia, but it is always something.
- 15:20So that that's a good place to leave the Eagles talk.
- 15:23Yeah, because like you said, AJ, they could be 14 and 3, and that's when he was reading the book on the sidelines.
- 15:29So it's really it's really yeah.
- 15:31We'll we'll see how that all plays out.
- 15:33But it is it definitely an interesting storyline in the NFL.
- 15:36The biggest storyline in the NFL was the Miles Garrett trade, partially because it involves the defensive player of the year, and also because it came out of nowhere, or at least to the casual fan.
- 15:47I don't know that anybody was expecting this.
- 15:49I certainly wasn't, and I would consider myself a casual.
- 15:52Miles Garrett joins the Los Angeles Rams.
- 15:56It's going to be the first time in NFL history that the reigning offensive MVP and defensive player of the year are on the same team in the following season.
- 16:07Which, I mean, that bodes well for Rams fans, I think.
- 16:10Yeah, if you're trying to win now, I think that's pretty decent to have.
- 16:13I will say the Browns did get a lot in return.
- 16:18I don't think they got anything close to Miles Garrett, who's a once-in-a-generation player.
- 16:22Right.
- 16:22But I don't think this would be ridiculous to call this a win-win for both teams.
- 16:26What do you think?
- 16:28I would agree.
- 16:29I think the return is fine for the Browns.
- 16:31They get Verse, they get several draft picks, including a first, second, third, I think.
- 16:36Yeah.
- 16:36Maybe a fourth, too.
- 16:37That's a good haul.
- 16:38I like Verse.
- 16:39He's very good.
- 16:39He's younger.
- 16:40That's great.
- 16:41The only thing that I, and of course, if you're the Rams, you're getting one of the best edges and NFL history.
- 16:49And he's still in his prime.
- 16:51He just broke the record last year for most sacks.
- 16:53Wow, what a player.
- 16:55The only thing that I don't like about the narrative is like people are like supporting the Browns, like, that's a great haul.
- 17:00And it's not like they're gonna win now, so they can wait, but it's like you can't have it both ways.
- 17:05If you're not gonna win now, then you're wasting some of Versus youth too.
- 17:09So like I get it.
- 17:11Like it like Miles Garrett is just better than in Jared Verse.
- 17:17Not a bit, not it doesn't, it's not a bad thing.
- 17:19Verse is a very good player.
- 17:20Garrett's generational, so the picks are nice.
- 17:24I get the move that the Browns are making, but like you gotta punish a team like the Browns who are trading a talent like Garrett, who didn't do anything for their team ultimately because their team was never serious, and they still don't have a quarterback, even though they have four who are all young, and none of them are that good.
- 17:39Maybe Shador is uh you can develop him.
- 17:42I I don't I I don't really see it.
- 17:44I'll spoil that one for the listeners.
- 17:46He stinks.
- 17:47That's that's sort of what I was thinking too, Sean.
- 17:50But like, oh my god, like we can't throw a party for the Browns for failing Miles Garrett and then trading him probably a year or two later than they should have, getting a nice return and then saying, Oh, they're back.
- 18:01I don't know.
- 18:02It's good.
- 18:03I agree with you.
- 18:03I think it's good for both teams ultimately, but like enough of the parades for the Browns.
- 18:08They traded away Miles Garrett.
- 18:11Yeah, I do think you made a really good point in that, that they failed Miles Garrett by not surrounding him.
- 18:18When you have a player of that caliber, it's it seems like it's a lot easier to build a really good team than it would be to not build a good team when you have a guy who single-handedly disrupts every game, every play that he's on the field.
- 18:30And for years, I think he was there nine seasons, for years they wasted his prime.
- 18:35He had requested a trade a year ago, and ultimately that wish wasn't granted.
- 18:41You know, the restructure, whatever went on behind the scenes.
- 18:44He he comes back, he says he's happy, he's content, and then eventually he gets to move a year later.
- 18:49I'm sure he's thrilled.
- 18:50The biggest winner in all of this is Miles Garrett.
- 18:52He gets to go from living in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 18:55Michael Collins is one of Michael Collins' six favorite cities, to sunny Los Angeles.
- 19:01Yeah.
- 19:02Really, really a big upgrade for him.
- 19:05Jared Verse, poor guy.
- 19:07Yeah, that's brutal for him.
- 19:08Oh my god.
- 19:09It doesn't get much worse downgrade-wise.
- 19:12Now, I will say I'm shitting on Cleveland a little bit.
- 19:14Miss Taylor Swift was recently courtside at a game there.
- 19:17Travis pulling her down into the mud of New Heights, Ohio.
- 19:21Fine, fine.
- 19:22Maybe Cleveland's on the rise.
- 19:24But yeah, I don't think that this trade gets Cleveland over the hump in any way.
- 19:29I guess it's the start of yet another rebuild, but I don't think that's exactly what Browns fans want to hear.
- 19:35It's kind of if not now, when?
- 19:37If not me, who, that sort of thing.
- 19:39When will we be good?
- 19:41Yeah.
- 19:42I if they had a quarterback, maybe it'd be a young quarterback, maybe it'd be more intriguing.
- 19:47I feel bad for Jared Verse.
- 19:49Besides leaving LA for Cleveland, obviously, he's going to a team that just has no identity, doesn't have much talent.
- 19:57Yeah, they have some pieces here and there, but like they're really like gonna be bad for a little bit and they're gonna rely on the draft picks.
- 20:04And it's like you have versus what 25, how many years until they become relevant?
- 20:09And then what is he, 28, 29, and then still probably has some good stuff in the tank, but like at that point, he's definitely in his prime, maybe on the other end of his prime.
- 20:18So we'll see.
- 20:19Again, yeah, I like the return in ways, but like you can't like we can't forget about how good Miles Garrett is.
- 20:26It's it's kind of funny how that works.
- 20:28And yeah, for the Rams outlook, they're certainly going all in.
- 20:32It does make me question their draft strategy to take a quarterback in the first round, which I questioned at the time, so I'm gonna maintain my consistency in that.
- 20:42There, they've always been since McVay got there, a team that pushes their chips in every year, which I respect.
- 20:48I like owners and teams that do that.
- 20:50I hate, I can't stand owners that don't care about winning, which we see a lot in other sports as well.
- 20:55It's hard when there's a salary floor, but in baseball, we see it all the time.
- 20:58There's owners that just straight up don't care about putting a good product on the field.
- 21:02The Rams do try to put a good product on the field each year.
- 21:05They don't tank, they don't try to accumulate picks, they go all in.
- 21:08I just think it was weird to take a project quarterback in the first round that's going to sit for the next two to three seasons when that's their peak window to win a Super Bowl in these next two to three seasons.
- 21:21You're pretty you're pretty spot on that, Sean.
- 21:23That pick at 13.
- 21:25I I don't have the draft in front of me.
- 21:27I'm sure I could find a few guys who could help them immediately right now.
- 21:30It just shows too that the Rams don't really prioritize taking first round picks and selecting them.
- 21:35They'll trade them and get whoever through trades, which is kind of commendable in that way.
- 21:39They won a work a Super Bowl uh few years doing that.
- 21:43It gutted kind of their system, but then they bounce back pretty quickly.
- 21:47Um, yeah, good.
- 21:48They they go all in, and they're probably after this trade the favorites out of the NFC, I'd say.
- 21:55Yeah.
- 21:56Yeah, on paper, it's hard to pick against the team with arguably the best.
- 22:00On offense and defense, but we'll see how the rest of their roster holds up.
- 22:04It's not exactly the deepest of teams.
- 22:07They're pretty top-loaded with a lot of those positions and talent they have, but they do have an elite coach, and they're certainly a contender in the NFL.
- 22:14The NFL finds a way to creep its itself into our conversations, even in the middle of June.
- 22:19Somehow, some way it's this league is always near the front of the sports landscape.
- 22:24Jarrell, let's take a detour.
- 22:25We have a little segment across our desks.
- 22:28We've done this before.
- 22:29This is just a hodgepodge of things that have made their way across our desk.
- 22:33The last sports item we're going to talk about today, I've stumbled into this.
- 22:38It wasn't even like I was seeking it.
- 22:41But the college baseball and college softball postseason NCAA tournaments, they've been electric from the highlights I've seen, from some of the clips I've seen online.
- 22:50Let's start with baseball, a tough one for my Kentucky Wildcats.
- 22:54West Virginia won back-to-back games in dramatic fashion to send themselves to Omaha.
- 23:00What do you think, just in general, about the baseball side of the NCAA tournament?
- 23:05I think the structure of it's pretty cool, and I think Omaha creates a really cool environment.
- 23:09I think it's very cool too, Sean.
- 23:12I like it.
- 23:12It's very passionate.
- 23:14I like that they're you always each each, I guess, segment, you're playing to be the home team so you can host.
- 23:22That's cool.
- 23:23It's a little confusing at first.
- 23:25I'm trying to like get like regionals, supers, where's the World Series next?
- 23:30Where does that fall?
- 23:31Once you pick that up, it's pretty cool.
- 23:33I like, you know, to win two games out of three or whatever it is.
- 23:36The atmosphere is electric.
- 23:38It's amazing that college baseball uses metal bats.
- 23:41Some of these hitters are too, most of the hitters are too good for that, I think, but it's kind of cool to see guys with that strength use metal.
- 23:48It's great.
- 23:48It's a great environment, a lot of passion, a lot of celebrations, a lot of great finishes at the end of the game.
- 23:55I know uh your cats had a few uh disappointing ones, but uh but it's pretty cool.
- 24:00And it's uh I feel like it's uh glowing up sort of right now at the right time overall.
- 24:05Maybe it has been like this for a little bit, but now it really feels uh awesome for sure.
- 24:11Yeah, it feels like the last few years there's certainly been a movement of positive direction.
- 24:14But I think right now each year continues to build.
- 24:17There's been a ton of upsets this year.
- 24:19The numbers like one, number number one seed UCLA, number two seed Georgia Tech.
- 24:23They've all been bounced.
- 24:24I believe like the six, seven seeds are out.
- 24:27So it's kind of created madness heading into Omaha, which is exciting.
- 24:31But then I have to say, even more exciting than what we've seen on the men's side is the women's side.
- 24:36The softball tournament, because of the pace of the game, these games go so quick, they're full of energy.
- 24:43I would call them an electric factory.
- 24:45And anybody who hasn't tuned into any postseason softball, I think you're missing out.
- 24:50We had Texas Tech Mia Williams, who's Jason Williams' daughter, hit a walk-off home run to send Texas Tech over your beloved crimson tide.
- 24:59Yeah.
- 25:00Exciting stuff, Jeremy.
- 25:01You might be a torture fan this week.
- 25:03Maybe that's a good uh selection.
- 25:05Never want to be too personal with this stuff, but maybe I should uh take the reins on that.
- 25:09Softball's great, Sean.
- 25:11It is, like you said, it is smaller fields, some smaller dimensions.
- 25:15The game flies, a lot of action, really cool.
- 25:19Uh I've I've been into the softball since Enrolling in Alabama because they've always had a strong program.
- 25:26It's great.
- 25:26Uh tough finish for, of course, the Crimson Tide, losing two in a row on the same night to Texas Tech.
- 25:33Very good team, though, uh, in Texas Tech, of course.
- 25:36But softball's great.
- 25:37They they have they they really have something good going with baseball, it seems like, right now, um, where there's a lot of passion, a lot of fans, a lot of people getting into it that probably wouldn't have beforehand.
- 25:48I don't know what what what that reason is, but I mean it's strong competition, great softball play, so maybe maybe that's what uh what's doing it.
- 25:58Just just the overall talent, maybe.
- 26:00Yeah, and now we have the final two teams standing on the women's side.
- 26:04We have Texas and Texas Tech.
- 26:07That is a best of three series happening in Oklahoma City, and they start on Wednesday, June 3rd.
- 26:13So as you're listening to this episode, the night the night of the first game is Wednesday.
- 26:18Three-game series, two teams that absolutely hate each other.
- 26:20Texas and Texas Tech are bitter rivals.
- 26:23Specifically, Texas Tech really can't stand Texas.
- 26:25It seems like all the schools in Texas that aren't UT have a real problem with the UT.
- 26:30So that'll be exciting.
- 26:32I I'm gonna try my best to tune in for a little bit of that.
- 26:35Yeah, me too.
- 26:36That'll be fun.
- 26:37Short series too, which I think makes it uh cooler for a finish and more uh you can lock in instead of a long, dragged-out seven-game series.
- 26:44Although maybe that would be good with the way the sear the sport's going, maybe it wouldn't be that bad.
- 26:49Yeah, maybe we could build the five, but it does create now in the moment a real action-packed.
- 26:55You you feel like if you lose one, you're in a real pickle.
- 27:00That's right.
- 27:01So let's talk about some non-sports topics, Jeremy.
- 27:04Some of the biggest news, at least on my desk this week, was Miss Taylor Swift.
- 27:09She's back in the headlines.
- 27:11Not only is she sitting courtside for Cleveland Cavalier's blowouts, she is dropping new songs for Toy Story 5.
- 27:19They're calling it Tay Story.
- 27:21They've the game is gone.
- 27:23They have completely done, they've rolled this out as if it was her next studio album.
- 27:29It is just going to be a new single that she is contributing to the movie, which of course I'm excited to hear.
- 27:36And it was produced with Jack Antinoff.
- 27:38So good news for me.
- 27:40And there's also rumors, Jeremy, this might be her return to country.
- 27:44That would be cool.
- 27:45I'm excited about this.
- 27:46This is iconic for Taylor.
- 27:48This is great for her.
- 27:49Getting a song in an original movie like Toy Story is sort of what I it's a big deal, of course.
- 27:56I would love her to do a cover of You've Got a Friend in Me as well.
- 28:00That's a hopeful wish.
- 28:02I don't know if that's in the cards, in the plans.
- 28:04That would be very cool if she did that.
- 28:06My goodness, that would be awesome.
- 28:08But I'm excited for the single.
- 28:09Great for her.
- 28:10Uh, great for her career, of course.
- 28:12Not that she really needs to boost her career, but it's just different.
- 28:15It's more versatility, more new stuff like this to add to the resume, the repertoire.
- 28:21Uh, so that's awesome.
- 28:23Yeah, it feels like Taylor Swift Disney Pixar, they go hand in hand.
- 28:27It feels like they're it was a match made in heaven.
- 28:29So again, I'm I'm here for all new Taylor Swift music, so I will be seated when this one comes out.
- 28:36I just I don't love that the song title is stolen from Gracie Abrams.
- 28:40Now, also on the music front, another pop girl.
- 28:43Jarrell, let me ask you your thoughts on Olivia Rodrigo.
- 28:45And I'll go first in saying that I've never really been a fan, and it's weird because she usually fits what people associate my music taste to be.
- 28:55I'm a pop, I'm a big fan of the pop girlies.
- 28:58I just have never really clicked with Olivia Rodrigo's music.
- 29:02It's all felt a bit immature for me, which makes sense as I'm older than she is, so it's kind of felt like, yeah, it's not necessarily for me.
- 29:10Not saying it was bad, but I just the second album in particular just wasn't a fan.
- 29:14She has a new album coming out in just under two weeks.
- 29:17She's released two singles called The Cure and Drop Dead.
- 29:20Before you give me your thoughts on the songs, Jared, what do you think about her in general?
- 29:25I like her.
- 29:27She isn't a go-to for me.
- 29:29I appreciate what she brings to the table and think she's very talented.
- 29:34Again, kind of like what you said, Sean.
- 29:36It's not my cup of tea, it's not my go-to.
- 29:39But if I spent more time with it, I'd probably like her a little more.
- 29:44It's nothing really against the music too much.
- 29:47It's just like, yeah, it's kind of some of the titles like drop dead.
- 29:51It's like everything's so like aggressive.
- 29:54And but like she's good, like when Driver's License came out, I go, wow, this is an amazing.
- 30:00Like the lyrics are great, the song is great, what a talented voice.
- 30:05And she and she's still that.
- 30:06She's just not a go-to for me, but I respect I respect the game.
- 30:10I think she's very talented.
- 30:11Yeah, definitely not a go-to for me either.
- 30:13But the two singles, I will say, it has me intrigued for the upcoming album.
- 30:17I think I might be a fan of this album because I do like what I've heard so far in these two.
- 30:21So that's, I guess, progress for me becoming a fan of Olivia Rodrigo.
- 30:25I don't think she's ever going to crack my top 50 artists, but it's nice to know that I don't actively avoid her music, which I kind of have done in the past.
- 30:35It's not like I hate her or anything.
- 30:37It's just kind of like, oh, no, thanks.
- 30:38You know, I'm good.
- 30:39I don't, I don't need that.
- 30:41Now I I like these two songs.
- 30:42Now I'm starting to meet fans of hers in the middle.
- 30:45Yeah, I like both of the songs.
- 30:47They're fine, especially the cure.
- 30:48I thought it got better as the song went on.
- 30:50Not that it was bad early on, but I think it picked up a lot of her music music is very catchy.
- 30:56The choruses are very catchy, and I think I think the cure is a good song.
- 31:00Didn't love Drop Dead as much.
- 31:02Again, it's fine.
- 31:04It's very poppy.
- 31:05She's very poppy, she's very catchy with her music, with her lyrics, with the chorus.
- 31:10Both songs are fine in a good in a good way.
- 31:13I don't I didn't love them.
- 31:14They're not great, but like I don't hate them.
- 31:16They work, you know.
- 31:17There you go.
- 31:18And and that's I I guess that's progress for somebody who's not a big Olivia fan.
- 31:23It might be a step in the right direction.
- 31:25I think it definitely is more developed than some of her other work.
- 31:27So I'm excited to see what the album holds.
- 31:30Jeremy, we're bringing it back, fair or foul.
- 31:34It's a fan favorite.
- 31:35We've done it a couple of episodes.
- 31:37I like doing it.
- 31:39I will say I do feel like we have the propensity to lean foul in a lot of the topics we bring up.
- 31:45So hopefully we find something today that we can say is fair and in bounds.
- 31:50But I'm not so sure looking at this list.
- 31:52I'll let you get started with what your first one is in the sheet.
- 31:55All right, Sean, this is a good one, I think, in my opinion.
- 31:59Um, the first fair foul we have getting out of your seat and standing in the aisle once your airplane has landed, even if you're in row 22.
- 32:10So I'll set the preference, I'll set the scene.
- 32:13The plane lands, planes they unload from the front to back, first row, second row, third.
- 32:20Some of you people just get up as soon as the flight lands, regardless, and you clog the aisles.
- 32:25It doesn't work, but I I won't get too into it yet.
- 32:30Is this fair or foul, Sean, to get up, clog the aisles if you're all the way in the back of the plane or not, or even like not the first few rows of the plane?
- 32:38It's so foul, in my opinion.
- 32:41I hate it, man.
- 32:42It's one of my biggest pet peeves, is when there's people, I I guess there is a little bit of a distinction.
- 32:48When there are people behind you that are acting as if their time is more important than yours, and they're running late for their connection, and they're in such a hurry to get off, and oh my god, and they're trying to push through the crowd and make their and worm their way up to get off the plane first.
- 33:07That's entirely foul.
- 33:08Those people that they should have air marshals just picking them up as they make their way through the hall and not letting them off the plane, keep detain them.
- 33:17But standing up, it's tough.
- 33:19If you've been on an eight-hour flight and you have an aisle seat, and you and the other aisle seat next to you both decide to stand up and to stretch the legs a little bit.
- 33:27I'm not gonna say you're crazy for that.
- 33:29I guess that's a little bit different, but you cannot inch forward.
- 33:32I think the moment you start making positive momentum forward, it's foul.
- 33:37If you stand neutral and almost act as a blocker to those heathens behind you, I would say that is inbounds.
- 33:45So I'm gonna say fair in some instances.
- 33:49If you're just referring to standing, if you're acting any forward progress, foul.
- 33:55What do you think?
- 33:56Yeah, I mean, like every good question, the answer lies between a little of both, yes or no.
- 34:02If you're Sean Boyle and you're 6'10, you gotta stand.
- 34:07You're too tall to sit down for that.
- 34:09Like, you gotta stretch the legs.
- 34:10I get that.
- 34:11You can't move forward for sure.
- 34:14You can also get up and be in the aisle if you have a connecting flight and it connects, you only have 45 minutes or less to get to that flight.
- 34:23Some of these terminals, Chicago, Phoenix, Dallas, any Houston, any airport in Texas, massive airports.
- 34:32You gotta, you gotta run, you gotta catch the tram or whatever.
- 34:35You have the right to go out there, but you have to tell people, you have to let people know.
- 34:39I see, I'm I'm against you on that.
- 34:41I think those people you fucked up when you booked.
- 34:44And if you got delayed or something, if you got delayed or something, that's just how the cookie crumbles.
- 34:49I I don't like anybody pushing through because then what if I'm in a situation where I'm in a hurry as well, yeah, and I'm just choosing not to be a disruptor, and you because you have a little more boldness about you, a few rows back in the cheap seats or trying to push through because your time's more valuable than mine.
- 35:07I don't like it, Jeremy.
- 35:08And that's why I would rather say shut the whole thing down, nobody stands until your row's ready to go, than to do a oh, but mine's leaving in 20 minutes.
- 35:18I don't want that.
- 35:19I don't want it.
- 35:20Don't open up in the word box.
- 35:22I'm switching my opinion completely then.
- 35:24I agree with that.
- 35:25Everybody should stand up when it's your row's turn.
- 35:28You stand up in unison, you look around your row, you say, Are we ready?
- 35:31Yes, stand up.
- 35:32Uh, that's fine.
- 35:33I'd proceed that way.
- 35:34And that works.
- 35:35So I I approve actually.
- 35:37That would be I would approve of that.
- 35:38If we could sign into law, a fact where it's it's like being dismissed from the auditorium in high school.
- 35:45Yeah, it's row by row.
- 35:47When your row's called, you could stand up and go.
- 35:49That's what we need to do on airlines because it creates it's madness.
- 35:52It's madness when people start flying around and grabbing bags.
- 35:56Oh, my bag's up there.
- 35:57I have to get eyes on it.
- 35:59It's like, no, you don't don't put it up there then.
- 36:01Yeah, I don't know.
- 36:02Well, that's why we had auditorium and dismissal to practice stuff like this in the real world.
- 36:06So I I I don't hate it, yeah.
- 36:09And people lose their minds when they travel too.
- 36:12It's like they're completely different animals.
- 36:13They it's yeah.
- 36:15And it's federal too.
- 36:16Like, I don't get I don't get these people because like anything you do that's dumb, breaking the law, is gonna be federal.
- 36:24So kind of dumb.
- 36:25And these people, yeah, you're right.
- 36:27These people turn into vultures in airports.
- 36:29I don't get it, but yeah, let's fix that.
- 36:31Absolute monsters.
- 36:33Jared, what's your next one in Fairfell?
- 36:35All right, my second one I have this is interesting.
- 36:40This could this could expand to a lot of things, but I'll narrow it down to uh tipping baristas for taking your order and not like tipping them for their service that they do.
- 36:50Literally, you order your drink and you pay with card, and the first screen that comes up is do you want to tip this amount?
- 36:59Fair or foul.
- 37:02Yeah, let's start with the one you just posed because we this could we'll have this conversation branch off in a few different directions.
- 37:08I think it's fair for them to have that built into their system to ask for a tip because they are give they are providing a service.
- 37:18Now, they are just taking your order and essentially pouring you a cup of coffee, like I get black coffee, it's doing this, it's just it's not much work, and that is what they're paid to do.
- 37:28So there is that argument.
- 37:31But I think since they are providing a service to you, you're choosing to go to that coffee shop, you're choosing to have them pour you your coffee instead of doing it yourself.
- 37:40It's fair to ask for a tip.
- 37:41There's other situations where that screen comes up for a tip and it's out of bounds.
- 37:45Yeah, so where I stand is I'm not gonna tip$2 on a$4 cup of coffee, but I don't think it's unreasonable for the place you're ordering coffee from to put that screen in there.
- 38:00And I don't think it's unreasonable if you do want to tip them something.
- 38:02What do you think?
- 38:03Is that fair or foul?
- 38:05That's fair.
- 38:06I think that they work.
- 38:08It's fair to ask for tips, regardless.
- 38:10You have the option to tip or not tip.
- 38:14Oh, that's fair.
- 38:15I think that they work very hard as well, but probably not for much money, too.
- 38:20So I don't hate, like, I get where they're coming from, and that's uh that's fine for that.
- 38:26It is unfortunate that the people they're asking the tips for are kind of shelling out, you know, their pennies in their drawers to get that cup of coffee in the morning many times.
- 38:35So I think they're targeting the wrong people a good bit.
- 38:39But it's fair to ask.
- 38:41I would I would just say, like, if you ask on the first screen, maybe they should be required to like run to the other side of the cafe so people can make decisions on their own and not be pressured, and then they come back in 20 seconds.
- 38:54But but it's all fair, like they can they can ask as as long as there's an option and as long as uh no one's spitting in coffee for answers.
- 39:02Uh it's it's all fair, I guess, to me.
- 39:05Yeah, a recent development in years is this new asking you to tip feature.
- 39:10Like this didn't used to exist, yeah, and now it's provided some ease when you're eating at a restaurant and they come to your table with the mobile machine and you're able to pay all in one fell swoop and get out on your way.
- 39:21I love that.
- 39:21Uh but there are times now, Jeremy, where uh we do the work.
- 39:25So, for example, say we go to a convenience store and we grab what we need and they go and ring us up and it's asking, would you like to round up or would you like to tip?
- 39:37And that is a no from me, dog.
- 39:39That's not fair, those are foul.
- 39:42That's that's crazy behavior, I think.
- 39:44Asking for a tip when you don't provide a service shouldn't be allowed.
- 39:48Maybe it's an extra step that makes us jump through.
- 39:51Maybe some rich folk are able to tip in those situations.
- 39:53I'm not.
- 39:55Yeah, I agree with you entirely there.
- 39:57That is uh that is fair.
- 39:59I don't even think in those situations the tips go to the employees.
- 40:03I think it just goes to the corporation.
- 40:04I could be wrong, but like definitely go to the corporation, whatever the right.
- 40:09So like miss miss me on that.
- 40:11Yeah, we uh we need some form of service for consideration for tips.
- 40:16That should be bottom floor, bare minimum, no doubt.
- 40:20There's nothing worse than accidentally hitting the roundup when your purchase was like 46.02.
- 40:25It's like mother, it's a full dollar 98 cents.
- 40:28I rounded up.
- 40:29It's like I didn't mean to hit that.
- 40:30There are times for me, for me, acme is my main grocery store, and there's a one, there's a five, and there's like a ten dollar tip.
- 40:39And the ten dollar tip is next to the credit button.
- 40:42So whenever I pick press credit, I'm scared that I'm gonna miss and hit tip ten dollars or whatever.
- 40:48So uh it's never happened yet, but I think it might eventually.
- 40:52So I'm I'm I'm on I'm watching.
- 40:56The last one for fair or foul, it's one I brought to you.
- 40:59And it's an age-old question.
- 41:02Okay, it is are unpaid internships fair or foul?
- 41:06I will let you lead the proceedings on this one.
- 41:11Alright, so this is a great one, Sean.
- 41:13One of my favorites.
- 41:15It's foul.
- 41:17You have to pay people to work.
- 41:20It doesn't matter if they're interns or whatever, if they're doing work, they're providing a service, you gotta pay for that.
- 41:28Now, I guess if if we're trying to make it work for everybody, if you promise them the job afterwards and you want to see them perform for a few months for free, it still sucks.
- 41:42Just pay the minimum wage.
- 41:44Yeah.
- 41:44That's not gonna kill you.
- 41:45But yeah, no, I'm I'm gonna scrap that entirely.
- 41:48It's foul.
- 41:49You gotta you gotta pay people minimum wage at the very least, probably more too for incentives.
- 41:55But like, yeah, let's no, no more free labor, no free work.
- 42:00That's uh enough of it.
- 42:01Let's let's stop with the crap.
- 42:02It's it's why we're in the troubles that we are with this uh this world.
- 42:07I don't know how they became so prevalent, too.
- 42:10The unpaid internships when especially when we were in college, they there were several it was almost 50-50 in terms of paid versus unpaid.
- 42:19Yeah, and I just don't know where these companies these people get off.
- 42:24It like you said, it's it's extortion, it's awful.
- 42:27I don't know how that those are allowed.
- 42:30We have labor unions out there, put a stop to that.
- 42:34We need we need absolutely no uh unpaid internships.
- 42:38I completely agree with you.
- 42:40Even if you're promised the job after the fact, it's like I'm still doing the job before.
- 42:45Right.
- 42:45Yeah, honestly, there's no strings attached for you to say I take it back.
- 42:49You know what I mean?
- 42:49Like, uh no, you actually didn't do a great job when it was unpaid, so you're not gonna get the job now.
- 42:54A promise is just words, like I think that's disgusting stuff.
- 42:57I I was kind of hoping you would say fair just so we could have a real heated argument there, and I would call you a monster, but I'm glad I'm glad to know that you're a recent.
- 43:05Listen, I can for the just for the for the content.
- 43:08No, no, no.
- 43:09The I know I want your actual opinion.
- 43:11I was just hoping you were one of those hoity toity.
- 43:15No, no, no, no.
- 43:16You gotta you gotta pay.
- 43:17Like it's great, like in theory, I guess maybe in a perfect world, but in this in this economy, in this job market, no, no way.
- 43:25Enough with the games like that.
- 43:26You gotta take care of people at the very minimum.
- 43:30My goodness, it's not even much money to like, oh my god.
- 43:34Yeah.
- 43:34If you can't afford to pay somebody for work, then you can't have them doing a job for you.
- 43:38So even if that's getting you coffee in the morning, whatever it is, if you're employing them to do something, you gotta pay.
- 43:45You gotta pay them.
- 43:46So I'm glad we agree on that.
- 43:48Jeremy, I think that does it for today's episode.
- 43:51It was a nice quick hitter, fun-hearted, some light conversation, got to catch up on a few things.
- 43:57Do you have anything before we go?
- 44:00Nah, I don't think so.
- 44:01Summer's heating up, of course.
- 44:04That's exciting.
- 44:05Yeah, like you said, no later of the month.
- 44:07Morgan's coming in early August.
- 44:09I know Sean will be locked in on that.
- 44:11Got him a ticket.
- 44:13Uh, but yeah, excited to get into warmer weathers.
- 44:16A little more baseball in the summer, we'll see.
- 44:18But uh yeah, that'll be uh that'll be fun.
