- 2:50Speaker 2: director of Read Aloud West Virginia joints. It's good, good morning,
- 2:54Speaker 2: welcome to the show, good morning. I never know when
- 2:57Speaker 2: I start, because you know, with the two. Sometimes I
- 3:01Speaker 2: say good morning when it's afternoon. Sometimes I say good afternoon.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So I'm just going to start saying hello or good day,
- 3:08Speaker 2: good day, good day.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Hello.
- 3:10Speaker 5: How are you I'm good.
- 3:11Speaker 2: How are you you come? I'm doing fine. You come
- 3:13Speaker 2: on with us every year, but for people who may
- 3:15Speaker 2: not be aware, we'll talk about your specific event and
- 3:18Speaker 2: some other things. Do what is Read Aloud West Virginia.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Read Aloud West Virginia is a homegrown West Virginia nonprofit
- 3:23Speaker 5: full of volunteers who motivate children to read for fun.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And how difficult is that? Or is it difficult? Ad all?
- 3:31Speaker 5: It depends on the kid.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I guess it.
- 3:33Speaker 5: Depends on the kid. It depends on the child's experience.
- 3:36Speaker 5: It's a lot of fun to do because we do
- 3:39Speaker 5: it through recruiting volunteers who we match with classrooms. They
- 3:43Speaker 5: go into the classroom at the appointed time by the
- 3:45Speaker 5: teacher every week and they read to the children just
- 3:48Speaker 5: for pleasure. So kids all day have really important lessons
- 3:52Speaker 5: to do that come with assessments and everything you remember
- 3:55Speaker 5: from school. But then it's important to just slow down
- 3:58Speaker 5: and read a book us because you enjoy it, just
- 4:01Speaker 5: because you love football or you love baseball, or you
- 4:04Speaker 5: love salamanders, or you love American history or whatever it is,
- 4:08Speaker 5: or fiction, Charlotte's Web, whatever. And when we do that
- 4:12Speaker 5: with kids, we model good fluent reading and then they
- 4:14Speaker 5: get interested in the books that we share with them,
- 4:17Speaker 5: and then we help put books in their hands and
- 4:20Speaker 5: the next thing you know, when they have some time
- 4:22Speaker 5: on their own, they're reading on their own, which builds
- 4:25Speaker 5: their vocabulary, and they're reading comprehension, and then they're often
- 4:29Speaker 5: running able to seize all the opportunities in life.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And I think it's very important, and you and I
- 4:33Speaker 2: talk about this every year that you're on with me.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's very important for people to realize that once you
- 4:38Speaker 2: find something that they're interested in. You you mentioned football, salamanders,
- 4:43Speaker 2: what they exactly whatody salamander fans are there?
- 4:46Speaker 5: Well? We get requests for amphibian books probably one out
- 4:51Speaker 5: of every two or three classrooms.
- 4:53Speaker 3: You like what you like, you like.
- 4:54Speaker 6: What you like.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Xladel's are very hot right now? What isladles this little
- 5:00Speaker 5: salamander that they're exotic looking, little pink thing with little
- 5:05Speaker 5: proturberances around their head. They're they're just really popular with
- 5:08Speaker 5: kids right now.
- 5:09Speaker 2: It's like the end thing right now. See sometimes it's
- 5:11Speaker 2: based on something out of a cartoon or a video
- 5:13Speaker 2: game or something like that. So all right, we'll look
- 5:16Speaker 2: into that at another time. You got this big event
- 5:19Speaker 2: called rid A Palooza. Yah not talk about that.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Yes, read a lot of us. Virginia is turning forty
- 5:24Speaker 5: years old this year. We started with a group of
- 5:26Speaker 5: canag County parents back in nineteen eighty six and about
- 5:29Speaker 5: fifteen or so years ago we started this event called
- 5:32Speaker 5: rit A Palooza, which is an opportunity for people to
- 5:35Speaker 5: sponsor and support the program. Come together. We're selling tickets
- 5:39Speaker 5: for forty five dollars online. We come together for two
- 5:42Speaker 5: hours on April second, that's Thursday, from five thirty to
- 5:47Speaker 5: seven thirty. We'll have a few drinks, we'll have eat
- 5:50Speaker 5: a few more d'oures and talk about visit with each other.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Read Aloud. Readers and volunteers and supporters love to talk
- 5:57Speaker 5: about the program, the books we're reading, where we're going
- 6:01Speaker 5: from here, it's just a nice party afterword.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I mean I'm looking at it here. Yeah, it's going
- 6:05Speaker 2: to be in the Irma Bird Gallery at the UC
- 6:07Speaker 2: Wriggleman Hall, University of Charleston. And you got to ordures
- 6:11Speaker 2: and drinks, and you've got to this wine pole.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Yes, we got a couple of little easy fundraisers there.
- 6:18Speaker 5: We have donors to our board members, our friends. Some
- 6:23Speaker 5: retailers here donate bottles of wine, all of which are
- 6:27Speaker 5: worth twenty dollars or more, and then they're all masked.
- 6:30Speaker 5: They're in a pretty bag and then you pay twenty
- 6:33Speaker 5: dollars to read aloud for a random number, and so
- 6:37Speaker 5: you get to pull this random bottle of wine and
- 6:39Speaker 5: it might be a twenty five dollars bottle of wine
- 6:41Speaker 5: or it might be a fifty dollars bottle of wine,
- 6:42Speaker 5: so you get the value back in any case, and
- 6:45Speaker 5: it creates a little fun in buzz and oh what
- 6:48Speaker 5: did you get? So it's just a fun sort of
- 6:50Speaker 5: little party game and a little fundraiser for us.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And you got music going on too.
- 6:54Speaker 7: Yes.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Jordan Dyer he came last year and he was so
- 6:57Speaker 5: wonderful and we were really thrilled that he agreed to come.
- 7:00Speaker 5: He said he enjoyed our event and liked it, and
- 7:02Speaker 5: so he agreed to come back and play for us.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Talking to Don Miller again, the executive director of Read
- 7:07Speaker 2: Aloud West Virginia. Rita Palooza is happening Thursday. I guess
- 7:11Speaker 2: it's one week from one week from today, five thirty
- 7:14Speaker 2: to seven thirty on the campus of the University of
- 7:16Speaker 2: Charles of a Dave Island Show and five eighty Live
- 7:18Speaker 2: brought you in part by Generations Forward the hurricane Great
- 7:20Speaker 2: deals continue on their selection of used vehicles, shopping compare
- 7:23Speaker 2: any used vehicle Generations for dot Com and if you
- 7:26Speaker 2: need service, ask about their works package and their pickup
- 7:29Speaker 2: and delivery service to check them out today, just off
- 7:30Speaker 2: the hurricane exit of I sixty four to one destination
- 7:33Speaker 2: for every Generation Generations Forward Seat Dealer for details. We'll
- 7:36Speaker 2: get back to more Rita Palooza here in just a
- 7:40Speaker 2: few months give you all the details on that. But
- 7:42Speaker 2: what else is on your mind today?
- 7:44Speaker 5: What else is on my mind? I cannot get off
- 7:47Speaker 5: my mind the success we are having with a book
- 7:50Speaker 5: distribution we created two years ago called book Bundles. This
- 7:54Speaker 5: is how I know about the ax Lodels. We found
- 7:57Speaker 5: some research that says when you give kids multiple bookooks
- 8:00Speaker 5: on the same subject, and it's a subject they're passionate about,
- 8:04Speaker 5: and those books, some are easy and some are a
- 8:06Speaker 5: little more difficult, they're reading. Comprehension in that subject not
- 8:09Speaker 5: only increases, but it increases faster than if we gave
- 8:13Speaker 5: them books all on their reading level on different subjects.
- 8:17Speaker 5: This amazed us, so we started asking kids, what subject
- 8:19Speaker 5: would you like to have and would you like to
- 8:21Speaker 5: know what West Virginia kids choose When you ask them
- 8:24Speaker 5: what they choose basketball and drawing, and football, and hunting
- 8:31Speaker 5: and fishing, and cats and dogs and some horses.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Probably I could have guessed that, yeah, exactly.
- 8:38Speaker 5: But when you typically give kids books, we still give
- 8:41Speaker 5: out a lot of fiction, and children ask for that.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Sometimes they ask for scary books.
- 8:46Speaker 2: They asked for.
- 8:46Speaker 5: American history and world history. One time last year a
- 8:50Speaker 5: kid asked me for books on the Black Death, so
- 8:53Speaker 5: they were interested in a certain era of you know,
- 8:55Speaker 5: the plague in Europe. But when you find these books
- 8:59Speaker 5: and you get the five books on this subject, what
- 9:01Speaker 5: we see in the classrooms is the kids open up
- 9:03Speaker 5: their little bundles of books and they immediately dive into them.
- 9:07Speaker 5: They hoop, they squeal, they hold them up and show
- 9:10Speaker 5: their friends. They say things. I literally had a volunteer
- 9:13Speaker 5: tell me after she had distributed these books. She said,
- 9:16Speaker 5: one of the boys said, I finally have books I
- 9:18Speaker 5: really want.
- 9:20Speaker 2: And that's that child.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Is going home and looking at books when nobody's nagging
- 9:24Speaker 5: him to. He doesn't have to be a signed reading
- 9:27Speaker 5: on whatever that subject was, because his innate curiosity is
- 9:32Speaker 5: driving him to go spend time with that, and when
- 9:34Speaker 5: he does that, he is learning new words on the
- 9:38Speaker 5: easy books, carrying that knowledge over into the more difficult books,
- 9:42Speaker 5: so that when he goes to school when somebody there's
- 9:44Speaker 5: a reference to something, or he has background knowledge which
- 9:48Speaker 5: will then enable him to seize on the lessons that
- 9:51Speaker 5: he encounters at school and build more knowledge and more
- 9:54Speaker 5: skills and do all the things that we want our.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Kids to be able to do. You know my place
- 10:00Speaker 2: to question educators, right, because you know that's certainly not
- 10:03Speaker 2: my place. But I have always wondered, and I understand
- 10:06Speaker 2: that when you go to school, you know you whether
- 10:09Speaker 2: it's public school or private school, or homeschool or college
- 10:13Speaker 2: or whatever the case may be, you have to study
- 10:15Speaker 2: things that you don't necessarily want to. But when it
- 10:17Speaker 2: comes to reading, I have always and again not my
- 10:19Speaker 2: place to question the education system, but I have always
- 10:22Speaker 2: questioned assigning people. And we want kids to know the classics,
- 10:26Speaker 2: but let's face it, a lot of us when we
- 10:27Speaker 2: were in school went through about the first five pages
- 10:31Speaker 2: and just said, I don't like this, and I know
- 10:33Speaker 2: that they. I did the same thing with the math
- 10:35Speaker 2: book too, but that's another story for another time. It
- 10:37Speaker 2: sunded up in radio. But I've always questioned that. I mean,
- 10:40Speaker 2: you know, if I've always thought, if you're reading something
- 10:44Speaker 2: that you that you like, I understand you want wanted
- 10:47Speaker 2: them to learn the class and do you understand where
- 10:49Speaker 2: I'm going to this. I've always thought that was kind
- 10:52Speaker 2: of weird.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Davey put your finger right on it, and I think
- 10:55Speaker 5: it is our place to constructively question what's going on.
- 10:59Speaker 5: So what we understand and better today. Brain science is amazing,
- 11:02Speaker 5: Behavioral research is amazing. It's come on a lot in
- 11:05Speaker 5: the last forty years, and you need both. There are
- 11:08Speaker 5: times when we need to study things we don't particularly enjoy.
- 11:12Speaker 5: But if you only get that, then all that you
- 11:16Speaker 5: learn about school and learning is that you don't like it.
- 11:18Speaker 5: But if when possible, the child who is really fascinated
- 11:23Speaker 5: by extreme weather can read on that, and the child
- 11:26Speaker 5: who really wants to read European history can read that,
- 11:29Speaker 5: and the childhood know exactly and it really makes a
- 11:34Speaker 5: difference in that relationship, in the attitude that that child
- 11:37Speaker 5: spends with books. There's also a time and a place
- 11:39Speaker 5: for fiction.
- 11:40Speaker 8: A lot of what's has.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Been assigned in school is fiction, which is fantastic. But
- 11:44Speaker 5: in that period when you first learn to read and
- 11:46Speaker 5: you're eight, nine, ten years old, and you're curious about
- 11:49Speaker 5: everything and you're just a sponge just trying to just
- 11:53Speaker 5: trying to absorb knowledge, we should lean into that and
- 11:56Speaker 5: maybe save some fiction for share times, bedtime reading aloud
- 12:02Speaker 5: as a class, rather than assigning a fiction book that
- 12:05Speaker 5: a kid's not really interested in.
- 12:07Speaker 2: It is it's balanced in your opinion, Does it matter
- 12:09Speaker 2: whether they're reading the classic book or whether it's online,
- 12:14Speaker 2: a kindle or something.
- 12:15Speaker 5: Like that doesn't have anything to do with my opinion. Okay,
- 12:19Speaker 5: the best science we know right now, the paper books
- 12:22Speaker 5: are better for our brains, and the younger you are,
- 12:25Speaker 5: the more that's true. Now that might change as more
- 12:29Speaker 5: is discovered. But for small children in particular, paper books
- 12:33Speaker 5: are better. But there's even some indication that adults, our
- 12:36Speaker 5: brains behave differently. Handwriting with crayons and pencils causes our
- 12:42Speaker 5: brain to react differently into store knowledge differently than tapping
- 12:46Speaker 5: and swiping on a device. I use devices all day long,
- 12:50Speaker 5: but there's something about our developing brains when we're kids
- 12:53Speaker 5: that things that we hold in their hands and write
- 12:56Speaker 5: and read on paper. The indications right now are that
- 13:00Speaker 5: that is better for us.
- 13:01Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Don Meller, executive director Read Aloud West Virginia, give us
- 13:05Speaker 2: all the details again on read a Palooza.
- 13:06Speaker 9: Okay.

- 16:44Speaker 9: Yeah, I did not. Yeah, come on the Sankyes, don't
- 16:47Speaker 9: open up baseball the stankies.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Is that what you called them?
- 16:51Speaker 9: You got it, you.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Got So who do your Orioles have in one of
- 16:54Speaker 2: the prospects for this season?
- 16:57Speaker 9: Three o'clock to night, three o'clock to say afternoon in
- 16:59Speaker 9: the newly renovated Camden Yards in Baltimore. They will be
- 17:04Speaker 9: hosting the Minnesota Twinkies. That is opening game, and I
- 17:09Speaker 9: can't wait to get up to the ballpark. A lot
- 17:11Speaker 9: of a lot of renovations that have taken place, and
- 17:14Speaker 9: it looks pretty good. You never can have too much pitching,
- 17:18Speaker 9: but they did some off season acquisitions and look for
- 17:22Speaker 9: the starting staff's got some possibilities. And then we got
- 17:25Speaker 9: Pete Alonzo playing first base now and in that home
- 17:28Speaker 9: run friendly ballpark of Candon Yards, I like to see
- 17:32Speaker 9: about fifty five or sixty you'd ever know. But you know,
- 17:35Speaker 9: we're all starting even though the Sankies did win last night,
- 17:38Speaker 9: we're all starting out zero and zero. And it's only
- 17:43Speaker 9: up from here from after a last season. Hey, by
- 17:46Speaker 9: the way, you've got mister Jenkins and Cook coming on
- 17:50Speaker 9: to rent baseball. Just a side note. On April the eighteenth,
- 17:55Speaker 9: here in the city of Nitro, Chris Sabo, a member
- 17:58Speaker 9: of the nineteen ninety Cincinnati Reds, World Series championship team
- 18:04Speaker 9: will be coming be the grand marshal for the Nitro
- 18:08Speaker 9: Little League Parade opening season parade. Then he will be
- 18:11Speaker 9: throwing out the first baseball pitch and softball pitch for
- 18:15Speaker 9: the Little league folks, and then we'll be at the
- 18:19Speaker 9: Nitro Baseball Card Show signing autographs from noon until two.
- 18:24Speaker 9: I have been asked by numerous people if he will
- 18:27Speaker 9: be wearing his goggles. I don't know. It is going
- 18:31Speaker 9: to be a request and we'll see. But Chris Sabo
- 18:35Speaker 9: of the nineteen ninety World champion Cincinnati Reds and a
- 18:38Speaker 9: member of the nineteen ninety four Baltimore Oils, as it
- 18:41Speaker 9: may be, will be in Nitro on April the eighteenth, Davo.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I'm very excited about that, and I'll make sure I
- 18:48Speaker 2: would say that those three already know about it, but
- 18:50Speaker 2: if not, I'll make sure that they do, and almost
- 18:54Speaker 2: one other thing about baseball, and then I'll move on
- 18:56Speaker 2: to while you're actually here. I remember a time when
- 18:59Speaker 2: Camden Yard, I mean Camden Yards was kind of a
- 19:02Speaker 2: huge deal when when it was opened back in the
- 19:05Speaker 2: day because it kind of it was one of the
- 19:07Speaker 2: first stadiums that got away from that cookie cutter, god
- 19:10Speaker 2: awful stadiums that everybody had in the nineteen seventies. Think Riverfront,
- 19:14Speaker 2: think Three Rivers, you know those those type stadiums. And
- 19:17Speaker 2: Camden was one of the ones. And when did it open,
- 19:20Speaker 2: Like ninety three or something like that, do you four
- 19:23Speaker 2: ninety four?
- 19:23Speaker 9: Okay?
- 19:23Speaker 2: I thought, yeah, the ninety four and that opened up,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and it was like revolutionary because everything that was old
- 19:30Speaker 2: is new again when that. And it's hard to believe
- 19:32Speaker 2: that it's been that many years since Camden Yards opened.
- 19:36Speaker 9: And one of these days I hope so that my
- 19:40Speaker 9: kid and myself will be able to enjoy a winning
- 19:43Speaker 9: playoff game in Camden Yard, since we do have a
- 19:47Speaker 9: losing streak going into double digits. So yes, I think
- 19:52Speaker 9: it revolutionary. It was revolutionary as in the fan experience
- 19:57Speaker 9: for Major League Baseball.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Indeed it is.
- 19:59Speaker 2: We're talking to Joe C from the City of Nitro.
- 20:01Speaker 2: We'll get off baseball, but we'll go back to it
- 20:03Speaker 2: with Jenkins and Jim Workman and Coop a little bit
- 20:05Speaker 2: later on. You know, Joe, no other city that I
- 20:08Speaker 2: know does more dissolute veterans than the city of Nitro does.
- 20:11Speaker 2: And you have something coming up on Monday, Welcome Home
- 20:14Speaker 2: to Vietnam Veterans, but it's actually open to all veterans.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Talk about this event.
- 20:19Speaker 9: Well, it's an annual event by legislature. By it was
- 20:24Speaker 9: deemed through legislation in the West Virginia legislature that on
- 20:29Speaker 9: March the thirtieth, annually an event would be held to
- 20:33Speaker 9: welcome home Vietnam veterans. And like you said, Dave, it
- 20:37Speaker 9: is open to all veterans, but it is really focused
- 20:40Speaker 9: on the welcoming home the Vietnam veterans. They when they
- 20:45Speaker 9: came home from Vietnam, they didn't get the greeting that
- 20:48Speaker 9: a lot of the servicemen deserved and get today. So
- 20:52Speaker 9: it's just it's a reminder of that. And we've been
- 20:56Speaker 9: proud to be able to be asked to host it
- 20:59Speaker 9: and the event, and this is the third year that
- 21:01Speaker 9: we have hosted the last two years and now this year.
- 21:05Speaker 9: But it doesn't matter if March thirtieth is on a Sunday, Monday, Wednesday,
- 21:09Speaker 9: whatever day of the week, they will celebrate it. And
- 21:13Speaker 9: we are doing that this coming Monday.
- 21:14Speaker 2: And again it is open to all veterans. And you
- 21:17Speaker 2: talked about this. I was having a conversation last night.
- 21:20Speaker 2: It was Texan back with a friend of mine who's
- 21:22Speaker 2: a military you know, he's around my age, but he
- 21:23Speaker 2: served in the military, and we just had this conversation
- 21:26Speaker 2: going last night about what the Vietnam veterans, of which
- 21:30Speaker 2: everybody knows. You know, my father was one the response
- 21:35Speaker 2: that they got when they came when they came back,
- 21:38Speaker 2: and it was it was not. It was not World
- 21:41Speaker 2: War two ticker tape parade when a lot of the
- 21:44Speaker 2: Vietnam veterans came back.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Joe, No, it wasn't.
- 21:47Speaker 9: I had three brothers that served during the Vietnam War.
- 21:51Speaker 9: In fact, I had one brother in the USS Forestall
- 21:54Speaker 9: when it actually blew up, and we didn't even know
- 21:57Speaker 9: he was he made it through the exploit and until
- 22:00Speaker 9: we saw him carrying litters on the deck of the
- 22:04Speaker 9: forest All. But I remember when my brothers would come
- 22:08Speaker 9: home that they quickly got out of their uniforms and
- 22:12Speaker 9: really because of what people would indicate or say to
- 22:16Speaker 9: them and that sort of thing. But you're right, Dave,
- 22:18Speaker 9: but the event on Monday is totally one hundred and
- 22:21Speaker 9: eighty degrees of that. It is a celebration of that
- 22:24Speaker 9: wartime era. It starts on about ten am at the
- 22:29Speaker 9: Living Memorial Park in Nitro, right there at the corner
- 22:33Speaker 9: of twenty first Street and Second Avenue. That's the City
- 22:36Speaker 9: Hall and then Nitro Antique Mall. It's right there. Well.
- 22:39Speaker 9: The event starts at ten o'clock and we'll go to
- 22:42Speaker 9: one thirty. There'll be some vendors out here. A neat thing, Dave,
- 22:46Speaker 9: is that a lot of the vendors. When I say vendors.
- 22:51Speaker 9: The Veterans Assistance of West Virginia will be here, the
- 22:55Speaker 9: Woody Williams VA Hospital folks will be here. There will
- 22:59Speaker 9: be a lot of veterans organizations here being able to
- 23:02Speaker 9: answer questions, not only for the Vietnam veterans, but like
- 23:05Speaker 9: you said, for all the veterans that will be an attendance.
- 23:08Speaker 9: So it's an overall type of information service and a
- 23:12Speaker 9: celebration of that wartime era. One really keynote the keynote
- 23:17Speaker 9: speaker again this year, as he has been the last
- 23:20Speaker 9: couple of years. He is now the retired president of
- 23:24Speaker 9: the UMWA, and that's Cecil Roberts. If you have not
- 23:27Speaker 9: heard Cecil Roberts speak, my goodness, gracious, I know you
- 23:31Speaker 9: being a Logan boy David. You've heard him speak numerous times,
- 23:36Speaker 9: but he rocks the crowd. He brings it home.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I have always said that, if you know, mister Roberts
- 23:42Speaker 2: is retired now, I've interviewed him several several times, but
- 23:45Speaker 2: I have always said that, as bizarre's this may sound,
- 23:48Speaker 2: I think when I die, I want Cecil Roberts to
- 23:50Speaker 2: do my funeral.
- 23:51Speaker 9: I really do, because I think he didn't miss as
- 23:55Speaker 9: calling as being a union organizer and fighting for the
- 24:00Speaker 9: lights of his workers. But if he stood up in
- 24:04Speaker 9: a pumpit at a church, people would be listening.
- 24:06Speaker 13: Oh.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Absolutely. We're talking to Joe Stevens from the city of
- 24:08Speaker 2: Nitro about this big event that is going to be happy.
- 24:11Speaker 2: This sort of a welcome home to Vietnam veterans but
- 24:14Speaker 2: open to all veterans, will be held on Monday therein Nitro.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Starts at ten am at the Nitro Living Memorial Park.
- 24:21Speaker 2: One of the great things, Joe, that I like about
- 24:22Speaker 2: when you guys do these sorts of events for veterans.
- 24:25Speaker 2: And again, no city, in my opinion, with all due
- 24:27Speaker 2: respect to all the others, no city in the state
- 24:29Speaker 2: of West Virginia, maybe in the country, does more for
- 24:31Speaker 2: veterans of what Nitro does. I mean, it was a
- 24:33Speaker 2: city that was born out of that. One of the
- 24:36Speaker 2: things I like that you folks do there is that
- 24:39Speaker 2: when you have these events, it's not just like you know,
- 24:42Speaker 2: a parade, or it's not just like a speaker. A
- 24:45Speaker 2: lot of valuable information available in one spot for veterans
- 24:49Speaker 2: right there. They don't have to make an appointment. They
- 24:51Speaker 2: don't have to drive anywhere other than to Nitro. I mean,
- 24:53Speaker 2: they don't have to go in some big hospital or whatever. Everything.
- 24:56Speaker 2: You got a lot of stuff, Joe available right there
- 25:00Speaker 2: during this event.
- 25:01Speaker 9: What the good thing is, Dave, you don't have to
- 25:04Speaker 9: make a phone call and then push numbers to get
- 25:07Speaker 9: this extension, that extension. This person or that person, the
- 25:11Speaker 9: person that you need to talk to is right in
- 25:13Speaker 9: front of you. You can ask questions and get answers
- 25:16Speaker 9: on the spot. If not, they take your name and
- 25:19Speaker 9: they get back to you. It's face to face. And
- 25:24Speaker 9: you and I both grew up with that, and it
- 25:27Speaker 9: is so accommodating to some of these folks because some
- 25:30Speaker 9: of these veterans, like myself, is technically challenged and sometimes
- 25:35Speaker 9: just can't get through. And you get frustrated not being
- 25:38Speaker 9: able to get to a real person and they give up.
- 25:41Speaker 9: Well you don't have to give up. You just come
- 25:43Speaker 9: here on Monday between ten and one thirty or so
- 25:46Speaker 9: and you can get your questions answered face to face.
- 25:50Speaker 9: And that is so cool. And also, Dave, I just
- 25:52Speaker 9: want to remind everybody we have the Nitro History and
- 25:54Speaker 9: Wars Museum which is right there on twenty twentieth Street,
- 25:58Speaker 9: right next to the park, that will be open from
- 26:01Speaker 9: ten until seven o'clock on Monday. A lot of the
- 26:04Speaker 9: veterans enjoy. We are the site of the West Virginia
- 26:09Speaker 9: Vietnam War Memorial that is inside the museum, so we
- 26:13Speaker 9: expect a pretty big crowd going into the museum. But
- 26:16Speaker 9: that'll be open starting at ten o'clock and going until
- 26:19Speaker 9: seven o'clock Monday night.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Before we let you go, Joan, we'll go back and
- 26:23Speaker 2: give you all the details in a moment. I won't
- 26:25Speaker 2: want to give you an opportunity anything else going on
- 26:27Speaker 2: to the city of Nitro that while you got the time
- 26:29Speaker 2: here that you want to talk about.
- 26:30Speaker 9: You know, we just kind of just sweep in the
- 26:32Speaker 9: streets and getting ready for summertime. Riding now our lake is.
- 26:37Speaker 9: We've been stocking it. We're expecting another stocking here real soon.
- 26:41Speaker 9: Be het seeing a lot of hikers and mountain bikers
- 26:44Speaker 9: out there. We've got twenty one miles of brand new trails.
- 26:47Speaker 9: I mean Tracy Toller and his Adventures team. They've been
- 26:52Speaker 9: out there and they've cut up some new trails and
- 26:56Speaker 9: coming soon to ride now our lakes sometime soon will
- 27:00Speaker 9: be a new disc golf course, but we'll give you
- 27:02Speaker 9: those details coming up. Like everybody else, we're ready for
- 27:05Speaker 9: the cold to get out and the warm to get
- 27:07Speaker 9: in so we can get out and play.
- 27:08Speaker 2: I never thought, Joe, in your other life, that I
- 27:10Speaker 2: would ever hear you make a statement like that, because
- 27:13Speaker 2: you're the guy who got on me big time because
- 27:15Speaker 2: I referred to as junk a couple of years ago
- 27:17Speaker 2: your association with the Ski Association. But I never thought
- 27:20Speaker 2: i'd hear Joe Stevens say something like you were ready
- 27:22Speaker 2: for warm weather.
- 27:24Speaker 9: When the resorts are open and skiing.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Ah, that's the difference.
- 27:30Speaker 5: I gotch.
- 27:31Speaker 9: I'll tell you what, I don't care what a bandit
- 27:33Speaker 9: says about you. You catch you on quick.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I like it all right. So the event is
- 27:39Speaker 2: going to be Monday, starts at ten am. Nitro Living
- 27:42Speaker 2: Memorial Park, Second Avenue, twenty first Street starts at ten.
- 27:45Speaker 2: It is a welcome home to Vietnam veterans, but it's
- 27:47Speaker 2: open to all veterans. He Sol Roberts will be the
- 27:49Speaker 2: keynote speaker. Lots of information, lots of good stuff going on.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Everything's free to the public, so come on out and
- 27:55Speaker 2: enjoy it. Joe, as always, we appreciate you being here
- 27:58Speaker 2: and we'll talk again soon. And best of luck your
- 28:00Speaker 2: team today.
- 28:01Speaker 9: Hey go Reds go. Oh, let's go. I had my
- 28:04Speaker 9: ticket for July fifth at Great American Ballparks. The o's
- 28:08Speaker 9: taken on the Reds already. I'm ready to go.
- 28:10Speaker 2: All right, Joe, Steve, appreciate it. Man, thanks a lot.

- 32:38Speaker 7: Well nineteen ninety World Series right goggles, Yeah, goggles.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Joe said that he's put a request in for Sable
- 32:45Speaker 2: to bring the goggles.
- 32:46Speaker 3: They should have Kurt Rambus too, and they could have
- 32:47Speaker 3: like Goggle day.
- 32:49Speaker 14: Sable was a heck of a player, Jim, he was Spuds,
- 32:52Speaker 14: he was solid man right beside Barry Lark.
- 32:55Speaker 18: And like you said, in the nineties.
- 32:56Speaker 2: That team, I mean, everybody talks about the teams of
- 32:59Speaker 2: the seventies and you know they probably wore a few
- 33:01Speaker 2: of those were probably better, but there was was there
- 33:03Speaker 2: a more exciting team to watch that nineteen ninety Reds team.
- 33:06Speaker 3: When when you had all of the ingredients that were
- 33:08Speaker 3: together there. I mean, Eric Davis is maybe a legendary
- 33:11Speaker 3: talent that was lost to injuries. I mean his career
- 33:14Speaker 3: arc still a very good player and retire as he retired,
- 33:17Speaker 3: but he probably would have been, you know, maybe a
- 33:19Speaker 3: top thirty player all time if he would have been
- 33:21Speaker 3: healthy for his entire career. So, I mean that was
- 33:23Speaker 3: certainly part of it. You know, you had the Jose
- 33:25Speaker 3: Rio on that team and the role players that did
- 33:28Speaker 3: so well to help me out. Billy Hatcher, I remember
- 33:30Speaker 3: like he had a great year that year.
- 33:32Speaker 7: That Don Duncan played second beats.
- 33:34Speaker 3: That's the guy I was trying to think about yesterday with.
- 33:37Speaker 7: Top day Zinger played first.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Of course, Benzinger was great, and those teams, it was
- 33:41Speaker 3: just that was a team that really did it all
- 33:43Speaker 3: the Nasty Boys. We always forget about the Nasty Boys,
- 33:45Speaker 3: it seems like, but that was really the thing for
- 33:47Speaker 3: the team.
- 33:47Speaker 7: You could shut it down after the seventh inning they
- 33:49Speaker 7: were going to the Natcleus and nasty boys are so
- 33:51Speaker 7: Charlton and Dibble and Myers on the back end of
- 33:55Speaker 7: the bullpen. And what was great about that team and
- 33:59Speaker 7: what we've missed for the last several years and maybe
- 34:02Speaker 7: I don't know if we can get it this year
- 34:03Speaker 7: or not, is a strong start by a Reds team.
- 34:06Speaker 7: That team was like I want to I mean, they
- 34:08Speaker 7: were really strong. I want to say, like I don't know,
- 34:11Speaker 7: eleven and two or something like that. After the first,
- 34:14Speaker 7: I mean they were really good and they were just
- 34:16Speaker 7: a five hundred team or below the five hundred team
- 34:18Speaker 7: in the second half of the season, the nineteen ninety team.
- 34:21Speaker 7: But then they beat the Pirates, an up and coming
- 34:24Speaker 7: Pirates team in the playoffs in five games I think
- 34:28Speaker 7: it was five games. And then and then swept you know,
- 34:31Speaker 7: they swept the Ace.
- 34:32Speaker 3: And probably luxy for that nineties team that was back
- 34:34Speaker 3: when you still just had the NLCS. And then the
- 34:37Speaker 3: World Series're gonna have to get through a wild card
- 34:39Speaker 3: round or multiple rounds, which frankly might have been a
- 34:42Speaker 3: good thing for that team.
- 34:43Speaker 7: But the Reds have not won a playoff series day
- 34:45Speaker 7: since nineteen ninety five. Nineteen ninety five is the last
- 34:50Speaker 7: time the Reds won a playoff series. And that one, yeah,
- 34:54Speaker 7: nineteen ninety five, nineteen ninety five, and that was that
- 34:59Speaker 7: was the either for the Divisionals when their business changed
- 35:02Speaker 7: and they and they won series in nineteen ninety five.
- 35:05Speaker 7: And in what twenty twelve they were head was at
- 35:08Speaker 7: twenty ten to twenty ten, three to one, they were,
- 35:11Speaker 7: they were up two, they were up two games two
- 35:16Speaker 7: in the best of five series against the Giants. Won
- 35:19Speaker 7: both of those games in San Francisco, came back home
- 35:22Speaker 7: and got swept by the Giants who won the World Series.
- 35:24Speaker 7: But they dropped three straight home. It's three straight games
- 35:27Speaker 7: in Cincinnati. And that's really the closest taste since until
- 35:32Speaker 7: you know, last year they got in the playoffs, got
- 35:34Speaker 7: swept by the Doctors.
- 35:35Speaker 3: There was the COVID year, but that was kind of
- 35:37Speaker 3: the same as like, they didn't score single run. If
- 35:38Speaker 3: I remember, I didn't score single run. What about this year?
- 35:42Speaker 2: Now that's about this year.
- 35:43Speaker 18: Well, let's also let's about the ninety season. Let's not
- 35:47Speaker 18: forget probably my favorite manager, Loup Panillah. I mean, because
- 35:52Speaker 18: of that fast start, they're known as the Wired to
- 35:54Speaker 18: Wired champ.
- 35:55Speaker 3: They were, so, yeah, pretty cool year.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Somebody sent me a picture of the other day and
- 35:59Speaker 2: I've seen I've actually we've seen it before and it
- 36:01Speaker 2: was one of my friends just said getting ready for
- 36:03Speaker 2: the season or whatever. It was a picture of Panela
- 36:04Speaker 2: in the reds uniform with his feet propped up on
- 36:07Speaker 2: the table with a pack of Marlboroughs and a bud
- 36:09Speaker 2: light sitting the sudding. That was pretty much Panilla and
- 36:13Speaker 2: we know it was the Nasty Boys.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think this year's team that it should
- 36:18Speaker 3: be exciting this year. I hope the Reds were so close.
- 36:22Speaker 3: I think that last year they made the playoffs, but
- 36:24Speaker 3: I think that there was a little bit of a
- 36:26Speaker 3: sense of maybe what could have been, or maybe that
- 36:29Speaker 3: it was a little because nobody had a good season.
- 36:31Speaker 3: It seemed like like nobody for the Reds really had
- 36:32Speaker 3: a great season last year. You know, Hunter Green had
- 36:35Speaker 3: a good season when he was healthy, you know, but
- 36:37Speaker 3: he was heard a lot last season. And you look
- 36:39Speaker 3: at some of the young guys they brought up, but
- 36:40Speaker 3: I mean like de La Cruz had kind of an
- 36:42Speaker 3: off season, Spencer Steer had a little bit of an
- 36:44Speaker 3: off season, Matt McClean didn't have the kind of season
- 36:46Speaker 3: that people thought he was going to have, And that,
- 36:48Speaker 3: right there is your core. You didn't get Martee he
- 36:50Speaker 3: was he was suspended for a lot of the season,
- 36:54Speaker 3: that's right. Yeah, so he just had kind of a Yeah,
- 36:56Speaker 3: he was late getting to the to the party as
- 36:59Speaker 3: far as of catching fire last year. So a lot
- 37:02Speaker 3: of players are kind of a down year. So when
- 37:03Speaker 3: you look at it this year and you're thinking, well,
- 37:06Speaker 3: you know, dal La Cruz was hurt for two thirds
- 37:08Speaker 3: of the season or whatever last year, and you had
- 37:09Speaker 3: all these different things. So you wonder if you can
- 37:11Speaker 3: capture lightning in a bottle. You got Genos Warrez back
- 37:14Speaker 3: that can finally hit some home runs for you because
- 37:16Speaker 3: the Reds have been power depleted since he left. Frankly,
- 37:19Speaker 3: I mean, if de la Cruz isn't hitting home runs,
- 37:21Speaker 3: nobody is for the Reds. So I mean they finally
- 37:23Speaker 3: got somebody there, salth Stewart. We just had Jeff Erickson
- 37:27Speaker 3: one yesterday, who's one of the premier Fantasy editors out there.
- 37:32Speaker 3: He's he's a one Fantasy Awards for the last ten years,
- 37:36Speaker 3: I think. But anyway, he's like that that one of
- 37:39Speaker 3: the hottest guys in fantasy drafts right now are south Stewart.
- 37:41Speaker 3: They they're adp or is just climbing like crazy because
- 37:44Speaker 3: people think that this guy's going to be a monster.
- 37:46Speaker 3: So you're starting to see what this Reds team. I
- 37:48Speaker 3: think that if you start seeing a guy like if
- 37:51Speaker 3: Sal Stewart and Gino and dal la Cruz and then
- 37:54Speaker 3: you start getting production out of McLean again, suddenly that
- 37:57Speaker 3: lineup gets a lot longer and gets a lot deeper,
- 38:00Speaker 3: and you hope you can score some runs.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Jim.
- 38:03Speaker 18: You know, I think I agree with Dale about all
- 38:05Speaker 18: those names that he mentioned. I think in the last
- 38:07Speaker 18: couple of years, we've seen glimpses of, you know, really
- 38:11Speaker 18: good players, and I think that's what Tito saw when
- 38:15Speaker 18: he came back to the Red So I think this
- 38:17Speaker 18: is the year that if everything falls into place, they
- 38:20Speaker 18: can be in contention.
- 38:22Speaker 7: So you've got to get pitching right. Pitching is number
- 38:25Speaker 7: one here, and so what's concerning at the beginning of
- 38:27Speaker 7: the years. Hunter Green is going to be out properly
- 38:30Speaker 7: least until July and maybe to the first of August,
- 38:34Speaker 7: so he won't be there for two thirds of the season,
- 38:37Speaker 7: which that's your ace, that's you, that's your shutdown guys,
- 38:40Speaker 7: So that's very disappointing. Now they are deep in starting pitching,
- 38:43Speaker 7: but they're young. Lodolo's going to miss the first he's
- 38:46Speaker 7: going to miss two starts, probably because his last Springs
- 38:49Speaker 7: training start it was ninety five degrees in Arizona and
- 38:52Speaker 7: he's had blister problems. He developed a blister, so he's
- 38:55Speaker 7: on a disabled list, a retroactive DAT so he's going
- 38:57Speaker 7: to be on for about twelve days. But they're hopefully
- 39:00Speaker 7: He's going to be fine.
- 39:01Speaker 13: Uh.
- 39:02Speaker 7: Andrew Abbitt is the starting pitcher today on opening Day.
- 39:04Speaker 7: He was named the name the starter a few weeks ago.
- 39:07Speaker 7: He didn't have a really good spring training. Now you
- 39:09Speaker 7: know spring training, you know you can throw a lot
- 39:12Speaker 7: of that out. Hopefully he's Andrew Rabbit today and for
- 39:16Speaker 7: this season they're going to need him to be. Brady
- 39:18Speaker 7: Stinger is in the number two spot now. He's an
- 39:21Speaker 7: innings eater, had a great year last year and he's
- 39:23Speaker 7: just going to be consistent. And then you've got you've
- 39:26Speaker 7: got the young guys. You got Burns and Rhet Louder,
- 39:33Speaker 7: you know, two young guys. Louder coming off Tommy John surgery.
- 39:36Speaker 7: Burns is going to be in there. He's still a rookie,
- 39:39Speaker 7: but he pitched last year. And then then Williams Simpson, Yeah, Williamson,
- 39:44Speaker 7: who had a real who's coming back also from Tommy
- 39:46Speaker 7: John surgery. So we'll we'll see. We're hopeful. We're hopeful.
- 39:50Speaker 7: I mean, these guys are good, they're young, and they're good,
- 39:52Speaker 7: but hopefully, you know, you're going to have to have
- 39:55Speaker 7: the pitching the back end of the bullpen where they
- 39:57Speaker 7: strengthened the back end of the bullpen, which they spent
- 40:00Speaker 7: some money there. And as you know, Matt McClain, the
- 40:04Speaker 7: second baseman, had an off year last year after the
- 40:06Speaker 7: shoulder surgery of the year before. They say it always
- 40:09Speaker 7: takes a year to come back from that. He had
- 40:11Speaker 7: a great spring training. Tied the Reds record for most
- 40:14Speaker 7: home runs in the spring training with seven.
- 40:16Speaker 3: And that's what happened his rookie year. He just he
- 40:18Speaker 3: just made the team out of spring training because he
- 40:20Speaker 3: crushed it in spring training.
- 40:21Speaker 7: So hopefully that continues, right, And then you've got Suth Stewart,
- 40:24Speaker 7: the rookie, as Coop mentioned that everybody's excited about he's
- 40:27Speaker 7: going to be playing first base. In fact that they
- 40:29Speaker 7: didn't have a Retz caravan this year, but the two
- 40:31Speaker 7: prior year, south Stewart was here in Charleston and we
- 40:35Speaker 7: had him on the air here on five ad w
- 40:36Speaker 7: C CHS. So looking forward to that. You got Hayes
- 40:40Speaker 7: at third base, Della Crue, you know, La and short stuff.
- 40:43Speaker 7: Hopefully he's in for a huge year, going to stay healthy.
- 40:47Speaker 7: And they've added some outfield pieces, so you know, and
- 40:50Speaker 7: you got swore As at third base well d H and.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Dirty Yeah, I mean, kee bro On Hayes might be.
- 40:57Speaker 3: I mean, he's going to get plenty of plan time,
- 40:59Speaker 3: but he's not going to be like you're not going
- 41:00Speaker 3: to put him in every single day at third base
- 41:02Speaker 3: to be moving around here.
- 41:03Speaker 7: He's the best defender, no question. He's the best probably
- 41:06Speaker 7: maybe the best defender in baseball. So you hate to
- 41:09Speaker 7: take him out of there much. But he's got to
- 41:11Speaker 7: hit a little bit, so hopefully you'll hit some.
- 41:13Speaker 3: They might do some of those late ending replacements with
- 41:15Speaker 3: him and stuff like that too, because I know Tito
- 41:16Speaker 3: likes to do that.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but the textasys seem the Reds have had bad
- 41:19Speaker 2: luctions to classic Riverfront Stadium was demolished. Is a coincidence
- 41:25Speaker 2: there's at Riverfront Stadium.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Too, I can tell you there's that a lot of
- 41:28Speaker 3: people thought that Griffy would have a lot better time
- 41:30Speaker 3: at Great American Ballpark because you know, that was the
- 41:32Speaker 3: that was the park that he was supposed to play in.
- 41:34Speaker 3: You know that right field Port was built for me
- 41:36Speaker 3: and it didn't quite work out the way it was
- 41:37Speaker 3: supposed to.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Who's the one player that you're most excited about this season? Jim?
- 41:42Speaker 18: You know, I think i'd like to see Ellie play
- 41:44Speaker 18: to his potential. Again, I think sometimes he tries to
- 41:47Speaker 18: make highlight plays, especially on defense when it's not really necessary.
- 41:51Speaker 18: I'd like to see him settle in. But a player
- 41:54Speaker 18: that rarely gets mentioned that I really like is the
- 41:57Speaker 18: catcher Tyler Stevenson. I mean, I think he had glimpses
- 42:01Speaker 18: in the past couple of years where he would carry
- 42:03Speaker 18: the Reds through a three game series with his offense.
- 42:06Speaker 18: And he's not a bad defender either, so I like
- 42:08Speaker 18: him both.
- 42:09Speaker 3: He needs to get something Stevenson is and I agree
- 42:12Speaker 3: with you, he's almost kind of the lynchpin key to
- 42:14Speaker 3: that because if you have Stevenson of two years ago,
- 42:16Speaker 3: suddenly you have a guy that's like a six hitter,
- 42:18Speaker 3: five hitter even, and he really lengthens out that lineup.
- 42:21Speaker 3: If you've got a guy that can hit twenty home
- 42:23Speaker 3: runs a catcher and hitting the two sixties or something
- 42:25Speaker 3: like that, the Stevenson that we had last year, you
- 42:28Speaker 3: need to you need a little bit more out of it.
- 42:30Speaker 3: This is a free agency, so he needs he needs
- 42:33Speaker 3: to come out with something.
- 42:34Speaker 7: So a lot of times players when it's their contract season,
- 42:38Speaker 7: obviously they have a bigger season so I would think
- 42:41Speaker 7: that he's quite.
- 42:41Speaker 3: Hope he does. Yeah, because that would really You're right,
- 42:43Speaker 3: that would really lengthen that lineup a lot if Stevenson
- 42:45Speaker 3: was was back to where he was two years ago.
- 42:47Speaker 2: I want to ask you, but we'll let you go
- 42:49Speaker 2: because I know everybody's get things to do. What except
- 42:51Speaker 2: for Jim, Jim got miss Jim got mistaken for John
- 42:54Speaker 2: for John Fetterman Senator Senator John Federman in a parking
- 42:58Speaker 2: lot at Kroger.
- 42:59Speaker 3: There address today or what?
- 43:01Speaker 2: He just told me that story. So the lady asked
- 43:03Speaker 2: asking him how much he looked, told me how much
- 43:05Speaker 2: he looked like Fatterman, And I can see it now.
- 43:08Speaker 3: And I didn't.
- 43:09Speaker 18: I didn't realize it because I get all my news
- 43:11Speaker 18: on the radio, so I have no idea all day.
- 43:14Speaker 2: I like that, right, what is you don't need to
- 43:17Speaker 2: get tell us the number of wins losses? But what
- 43:19Speaker 2: place in the division would I mean, we'd all like
- 43:21Speaker 2: to see him in first, But if you had.
- 43:22Speaker 7: To pick, well, I mean a little texts text chain
- 43:28Speaker 7: with with some other with some other Reds fans here.
- 43:32Speaker 7: And so today was the deadline that I had to,
- 43:34Speaker 7: you know, choose what how many wins. And I know
- 43:37Speaker 7: the national predictors like Fangrafts, and they don't like the
- 43:41Speaker 7: Reds this year. I mean they've got him below five
- 43:43Speaker 7: hundred last year, right, yeah, less than last year. But
- 43:46Speaker 7: I'm going with eighty five wins, which would be you know,
- 43:49Speaker 7: like a four win improvement or maybe a three win
- 43:53Speaker 7: improvement over last year. And and hope it's low, but
- 43:58Speaker 7: I mean, I'm going to go eighty five wins.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Okay too.
- 44:01Speaker 3: I'm almost never optimistic because I think that it's a
- 44:03Speaker 3: curse to be overly optimistic, you know. I think you say, hey,
- 44:06Speaker 3: we're gonna win one hundred games, that you're going to
- 44:07Speaker 3: win sixty, you know, like I hate to do that. However,
- 44:10Speaker 3: I am going to try to be on the positive
- 44:12Speaker 3: side of these things this year. I think that the
- 44:13Speaker 3: Reds have had some bad luck. They haven't had any
- 44:16Speaker 3: of these players gel together and have good seasons, you know,
- 44:19Speaker 3: like a few years ago the COVID year when they
- 44:22Speaker 3: had Winker and Costadanos they both had were having those
- 44:25Speaker 3: monster seasons at the same time. They need something like that,
- 44:27Speaker 3: and I think it's going to happen this year, and
- 44:29Speaker 3: so I'm want to stay second in the division whatever
- 44:31Speaker 3: that is, and they'll be in the playoffs, all right, Jim.
- 44:34Speaker 18: I concur with the second place, and all I can
- 44:36Speaker 18: say is trust Tito. He's had some time with this
- 44:39Speaker 18: roster and I think, I mean, he's a master at it.
- 44:41Speaker 18: He's probably going to be a Hall of Fame manager.
- 44:44Speaker 18: So I think he'll manage this season correctly using the
- 44:47Speaker 18: talent that we believe that they have, and they're going
- 44:49Speaker 18: to do well.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Jim, Markman, Wally and Weppees, Yeah, and the Western New

- 49:57Speaker 9: Well?
- 49:57Speaker 2: I always think the military should have a heroes welcome
- 49:59Speaker 2: no matter what. That's not feasible, that's not practical. But
- 50:04Speaker 2: I don't think that people like my dad when they landed,

- 50:11Speaker 2: called baby killers.
- 50:13Speaker 9: I don't.
- 50:14Speaker 2: I don't go with that. If you were against the
- 50:17Speaker 2: Vietnam this is the way I feel about it. If
- 50:20Speaker 2: you're against the Vietnam War or any conflict, you know,

- 50:50Speaker 2: of us.
- 50:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:51Speaker 2: I had a you know, father that died of agent
- 50:53Speaker 2: orange poisoning. You know that he got in Vietnam serving
- 50:55Speaker 2: his country. So yeah, it's a little personal with me.
- 50:57Speaker 20: People in the military follow orders. They do what they
- 51:01Speaker 20: are ordered to do through the chain of command. Your
- 51:03Speaker 20: point is exactly right. If you have a problem with that,

- 51:48Speaker 20: and they're trying to collect twenty dollars gift cards.
- 51:49Speaker 2: For them to keep them going.
- 51:52Speaker 20: That's the society we live in today.
- 51:54Speaker 3: That's what politics has come to.
- 51:55Speaker 20: That we're just taking a group of people that are
- 51:58Speaker 20: trying to earn a living working for the government and
- 52:00Speaker 20: making them political pawns in the game. Yeah, no arguments here.
- 52:04Speaker 20: I mean, it's it's a sad state of affairs. So
