- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we are talking about expectations and
- 0:33disappointments. Boy oh boy, they are everywhere
- 0:38around us, disappointments happen because of missed
- 0:43expectations. There's an old phrase that says
- 0:45the road to disappointment is paved with missed expectations,
- 0:50and that is so true. And we have expectations,
- 0:54constantly conscious or unconscious.
- 0:57We have them. They can be implicit thoughts,
- 1:00explicit thoughts, but we have them all the time.
- 1:04And if you think you are void of expectations, you are silly
- 1:08because we all have them and you are flat out basically wrong.
- 1:12We want to say, oh, I didn't have any expectations, but the
- 1:15truth is, underneath we did. And that's where we have pain
- 1:19show up because we had an expectation and we either chose
- 1:23not to share it with people, chose not to focus our attention
- 1:27on making it happen. Whatever it is, we have these
- 1:30expectations and then it blows up in our face.
- 1:34Now one of the interesting ones that happens is when we put it
- 1:37on other people. So often we have expectations of
- 1:42how another person is going to show up and.
- 1:46We don't always tell them because we want to see how
- 1:48they're going to show up. And then when they don't show up
- 1:51the way we want them to, we are disappointed.
- 1:54So is that actually fair? Well, not really fair because if
- 1:58they didn't know, then they didn't know.
- 2:01And how could they meet the expectation?
- 2:02And you're asking them to show up in a way that they may not
- 2:06even have the skill set to show up.
- 2:08They may not even know how to do this.
- 2:09They may have never, you know, been taught.
- 2:12It's interesting because lots of times.
- 2:14Especially women. We have this thing where we
- 2:18think people men, Let's be very clear talking about men.
- 2:22Women often have a tendency to think men will be able to figure
- 2:27out what they want, and we want them to do that.
- 2:30Let's be very clear, I'm a committer of this as well, and
- 2:34they just don't. And we think, God, why can't
- 2:37they just get it? Why can't they just understand
- 2:40what I'm looking for? Why can't they just show up that
- 2:42way? Well, it's partly because
- 2:46they're just hardwired differently, and it's partly
- 2:48because they perceive the world differently.
- 2:50And it's also because we don't necessarily come right out and
- 2:54say it. Now, I first want to admit there
- 2:57are times when I will say exactly what I need to my
- 3:00husband, and he does nothing about it.
- 3:03And we all sit there dumbfounded because we're like, how could
- 3:06this possibly be? And I coach a lot of women, and
- 3:10a lot of women say the same thing to me.
- 3:12And it's like, just miss it, don't even pay attention to it.
- 3:17And I think that part of the challenge that you have in that
- 3:22moment is how to approach it. Because once the missed
- 3:25expectation happens, we go into a place of reaction, sadness,
- 3:30whatever it might be. And all of a sudden our partners
- 3:34are, you know, on the other side of that.
- 3:38And they don't even really understand what happened
- 3:40because, well. Did we actually say this was a
- 3:43big deal? Did we actually say, I'm going
- 3:45to care about this? Did we actually give them
- 3:47information? And somebody on here might be
- 3:48thinking right now, well, why should I have to?
- 3:50If I've already said it, why should I have to say it's a big
- 3:53deal? And you might be right, You
- 3:54might actually be right. Why should you have to say it?
- 3:57But the truth is, if you want the outcome, you're probably
- 4:00going to have to express the level at which you want that
- 4:04outcome to take place, because that's.
- 4:08That's how we we have to interpret somebody else's
- 4:12position and where they are. That's their model of the world
- 4:15up against our model of the world, and they're running into
- 4:17each other and they're not necessarily going to do well.
- 4:20When worlds collide, it doesn't always do well.
- 4:23Sometimes it's fantastic and it makes something you know
- 4:27exponentially better than what you had, but often.
- 4:31What happens is just becoming more and more torn up by the
- 4:34fact that the expectations were not met and then the
- 4:38disappointment start to stack it.
- 4:39Before you know it, you blow your top.
- 4:41So how you handle it right from the very beginning is where the
- 4:47the power you have to decide how you want to handle things from
- 4:51the very beginning. Often times it's sitting down
- 4:54with your person and saying hey, I, I, we are going into this.
- 5:00You know, frame at time of year where there are lots of things
- 5:03happening and I have these expectations that I realized and
- 5:07I'd like to communicate them to you so that we can both talk
- 5:11about it and figure out the best way to handle those
- 5:13expectations. And I know it seems arduous to
- 5:18have to do that in certain cases, but the truth is it then
- 5:21you at least have a fair opportunity for the other person
- 5:25to respond. So do yourself a favor, don't
- 5:28drive straight to the town of disappointment.
- 5:31Please handle the expectations up front with your people and
- 5:36hopefully you will be able to circumvent that.
- 5:39OK my friends, I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:42Bye.
