- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 17th of
- 0:15December, and in the midst of this pre Christmas madness, you
- 0:19have invited me into your day so that we can read a chapter of
- 0:23God's words together. Well done and thank you for the
- 0:26invitation. We are going to continue reading
- 0:29this fascinating story of Paul caught up in the power
- 0:33structures of Rome and Jerusalem, that interplay
- 0:37between the Jewish leadership and the Roman leadership, going
- 0:41up the chain all the way through the royalty to reach the
- 0:45emperor, the Caesar, to appeal his case.
- 0:49And we hear these words, but we hear these words through so many
- 0:52different lenses. Here we have these speeches
- 0:56spoken by Paul, this incredible communicator of the gospel
- 0:59message, interpreted and captured, written down by Luke,
- 1:04this amazing, intellectual, wonderful communicator with an
- 1:09excellent command of language. And then taken by these scholars
- 1:13who have found it in the original language and worked it
- 1:17into English in a way that can capture the heart and the
- 1:20essence of the message that was being communicated.
- 1:24So this comes from Paul, through Luke, through the translators,
- 1:29and through me reading it to you so that the Holy Spirit can work
- 1:34in you and in me to share the news that He has for us.
- 1:39What a crackerjack. So let us share this story.
- 1:43Paul shares his testimony for you today, friend.
- 1:47So let's read it together in Acts chapter 26.
- 2:00Then Agrippa said to Paul, you may speak in your defence.
- 2:05So Paul gesturing with his hand started his defence.
- 2:10I'm fortunate, King Agrippa, that you are the one hearing my
- 2:13defence today against all these accusations made by the Jewish
- 2:17leaders, for I know that you are an expert on all Jewish customs
- 2:22and controversies. Now please listen to me
- 2:26patiently. As the Jewish leaders are well
- 2:29aware, I was given a thorough Jewish training from my earliest
- 2:33childhood among my own people and in Jerusalem.
- 2:38If they would admit it, they know that I have been a member
- 2:41of the Pharisees, the strictest sect of our religion.
- 2:45Now I am on trial because of my hope in the fulfilment of God's
- 2:50promise made to our ancestors. In fact, that is why the 12
- 2:55tribes of Israel zealously worship God night and day, and
- 2:59they share the same hope I have. Yet, Your Majesty, they accuse
- 3:06me for having this hope. Why does it seem incredible to
- 3:11any of you that God can raise the dead?
- 3:14I used to believe that I ought to do everything I could to
- 3:18oppress the very name of Jesus the Nazarene.
- 3:22Indeed, I did just that in Jerusalem, authorised by the
- 3:28leading priests, I caused many believers there to be sent to
- 3:32prison, and I cast my vote against them when they were
- 3:35condemned to death. Many times I had them punished
- 3:40in the synagogues to get them to curse Jesus.
- 3:43I was so violently opposed to them that I even chased them
- 3:47down in foreign cities. One day I was on such a mission
- 3:51to Damascus, armed with the authority and Commission of the
- 3:55leading priests. About noon, your Majesty, as I
- 3:59was on the road, a light from heaven brighter than the sun,
- 4:03shone down on me and my companions.
- 4:06We all fell down, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic.
- 4:11Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?
- 4:16It is useless for you to fight against my will.
- 4:20Who are you, Lord? I asked, and the Lord replied.
- 4:24I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.
- 4:28Now get to your feet, for I have appeared to you to appoint you
- 4:32as my servant and witness. Tell the people that you've seen
- 4:36me and tell them what I will show you in the future, and I
- 4:40will rescue you from both your own people and the Gentiles.
- 4:45Yes, I'm sending you to the Gentiles to open their eyes so
- 4:49they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of
- 4:54Satan to God. Then they will receive
- 4:58forgiveness for their sins and be given to place among God's
- 5:02people who are set apart by faith in Me.
- 5:07And so, King Agrippa, I obeyed that vision from heaven.
- 5:11I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem, and
- 5:15throughout all Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that all must
- 5:19repent of their sins and turn to God and prove that they have
- 5:24changed by the good things they do.
- 5:28Some Jews arrested me in the temple for preaching this, and
- 5:31they tried to kill me. But God has protected me right
- 5:35up to this present time, so I can testify to everyone from the
- 5:39least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the
- 5:44prophets and Moses said would happen, that the Messiah would
- 5:48suffer and be the first to rise from the dead and in this way
- 5:53announce God's light to Jews and Gentiles alike.
- 5:59Suddenly fester, shouted Paul. Are you insane?
- 6:03Too much study has made you crazy.
- 6:06But Paul replied, I'm not insane.
- 6:09Most excellent, Festus. What I'm saying is the sober
- 6:13truth, and King Agrippa knows about these things.
- 6:17I speak boldly, for I'm sure these events are all familiar to
- 6:21him, for they were not done in a corner.
- 6:24King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets?
- 6:27I know you do. Agrippa interrupted him.
- 6:30Do you think you can persuade me to become a Christian so
- 6:35quickly? Paul replied.
- 6:38Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that both you and
- 6:42everyone here in this audience might become the same as I am,
- 6:47except for these trains. Then the king, the governor,
- 6:52Bernice, and all the others stood and left.
- 6:56As they went out, they talked it over and agreed.
- 6:59This man hasn't done anything to deserve death or imprisonment.
- 7:04And Agrippa said to Festus he could have been set free if he
- 7:08hadn't appealed to Caesar. Oh Jesus, what a wonderful story
- 7:21of Paul sharing his faith in you so clearly and so boldly, and as
- 7:27it so many times does. The story of faith and trust in
- 7:32you sounds completely crazy to those who don't know you.
- 7:38Our Lord, change the hearts of people in this world.
- 7:42Soften their hearts. Make them more open to you so
- 7:46that your message, your glorious message of love and forgiveness
- 7:50and acceptance, doesn't need to sound crazy.
- 7:55And as Festus shouted, are you insane?
- 7:59But it can tap into and fulfil that great human need that
- 8:05everyone of us walks around with in our heart of hearts.
- 8:11Oh Jesus, let your love be known.
- 8:14Use us to make your love known. And not just in the words that
- 8:19we say, but in the lives that we live and the things that we do.
- 8:23Thank you for your transformative love, and I pray
- 8:26that it's transformative work would go through us into the
- 8:31world around us. We love you and we pray all
- 8:35these things in your holy and precious name, Jesus, Amen.
