Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to another episode of the Elon Musk
- 0:04Podcast. This is your go to source for
- 0:06everything Elon Musk and his array of disruptive
- 0:10technologies. Now, today we're going to be
- 0:13talking about a huge shift in the automotive and energy
- 0:17sectors. Tesla's $100 million deal to
- 0:22sell Supercharger hardware to BP.
- 0:25Yeah, you heard that right. The electric vehicle giant is
- 0:28partnering with one of the world's largest oil companies
- 0:31and the purpose to expand electric vehicle charging
- 0:34infrastructure across the United States.
- 0:37So this agreement sees Tesla's Supercharger units getting
- 0:40installed at various BP locations.
- 0:43We're talking about BP, Amoco, Thornton's Travel Centers of
- 0:46America, and BP Pulses Giga Hub sites.
- 0:50This deal sets a new precedent and potentially opens the doors
- 0:53for other major players in the energy sector to join the EV
- 0:57revolution. Let's start by acknowledging
- 1:00that Tesla has long held the crown for fast charging networks
- 1:03in North America, and until now, Tesla has exclusively built,
- 1:07deployed, and operated its own Superchargers.
- 1:09The company's connector design has become so advanced that even
- 1:13competitors are adopting it and Tesla's charging network isn't a
- 1:17small fee and automakers want a piece of their pie.
- 1:20Now, in a ground breaking move, Tesla is selling its
- 1:23Supercharger hardware to BP. This marks a historic first BP
- 1:28will deploy Tesla built BP branded charging stations at its
- 1:32own sites. It's an acknowledgement that
- 1:34Tesla's tech is key to advancing the entire EV market and it also
- 1:39offers Tesla a brand new revenue stream.
- 1:42And the specifics are very tantalizing.
- 1:44BP will be getting Tesla's latest Supercharger hardware,
- 1:47complete with Magic Dock, which accommodates CCS vehicles in
- 1:51addition to Tesla's own. And locations for these new
- 1:54Superchargers have already been chosen, including key cities
- 1:58like Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington
- 2:02DC, and the rollout will commence in 2024.
- 2:05Now Tesla's Rebecca Tanucci, the head of charging infrastructure,
- 2:09stated at Tesla were driven to enable great charging
- 2:13experiences for all EV owners. BP is also throwing its weight
- 2:17behind the venture. Richard Bartlett, the global CEO
- 2:20of BP Pulse spoke about enhancing B PS Pulse network
- 2:25with Tesla's high grade hardware is a major leap forward for the
- 2:28company and we've talked about how innovative this deal is, but
- 2:32let's discuss the monetary side of things.
- 2:34This $100 million agreement is a fraction of BP Pulse's larger
- 2:39strategy to invest up to a billion dollars in US charging
- 2:43stations by 20-30 a billion dollars.
- 2:46And while the exact number of stations involved in the Tesla
- 2:49BP deal remains undisclosed, the scale is undoubtedly massive.
- 2:54Both companies stand to benefit significantly.
- 2:56For Tesla, this deal offers a lucrative new revenue stream.
- 3:00For BP, It's just strategic move that aligns the company with the
- 3:04undeniable future of transport electric vehicles.
- 3:08And as Tesla navigates new business ventures, the company
- 3:11is also sailing through a little bit of choppy political waters.
- 3:15The adoption of electric vehicles in the United States
- 3:17has become a topic of heated debate increasingly aligned with
- 3:21partisan ideologies. A Bloomberg News report
- 3:24highlighted that electric vehicle ownership is closely
- 3:27linked to voting patterns in the USA polarization that transcends
- 3:31demographic and socio economic indicators.
- 3:34This political split has intensified over the past
- 3:36months, with some GOP members advocating for the rollback of
- 3:40EV incentives that were enacted during the Biden administration.
- 3:45And Donald Trump, a figure not unknown for stirring the pot,
- 3:47has been vocal in his criticism of the electric vehicle push.
- 3:51He's argued that the growth of the EV sector could endanger the
- 3:54US auto industry, claiming that electric vehicles would
- 3:58inevitably be produced in China, thus risking American jobs.
- 4:02In this viewpoint doesn't consider the contributions made
- 4:06by companies like Tesla and keeping the automotive
- 4:08production very much an American endeavor.
- 4:11Tesla's complete range of vehicles, Model Y, Model 3,
- 4:14Model X, Model S was recognized as the most American made cars
- 4:18in a 2023 list. Debunking the notion that EVs
- 4:22threaten the American auto sector and further complicating
- 4:26the political scenario is Elon Musk, who has built a unique
- 4:29narrative around Tesla and EVs. The move of Tesla from
- 4:32California to Texas and Musk's engagement with conservative
- 4:36politics indicate an attempt to make Tesla and its product
- 4:40lineup more palatable to a wider ideological spectrum.
- 4:44And report suggests that Musk aims to bridge the gap further
- 4:47with the launch of Tesla Cybertruck, a vehicle that by
- 4:49its very design and utility, could appeal to some of the
- 4:53traditional truck loving American consumers.
- 4:56And Tesla's focus is not just on market expansion.
- 4:59The company aims for a sweeping production rate of around
- 5:01250,000 cyber trucks per year by 2025.
- 5:06This number dwarfs the current sales figures for all electric
- 5:09pickup trucks in the market, while Tesla holds a dominant
- 5:12share, making up approximately 60% of all EV sold in the US,
- 5:18and the company shows no signs of complainancy.
- 5:21And whether Musk's endeavors to broaden Tesla's appeal across
- 5:24the political divide will bear fruit remains an open question.
- 5:28It was clear that the company is actively engaging in shaping not
- 5:31just the future of transportation, but also the
- 5:34discourse surrounding those vehicles.
- 5:37Now, Tesla is a complex machine. The cyber truck's launch, and
- 5:41it's moved to Texas, could be Elon Musk's attempt to make EVs
- 5:45appealing to everybody. And while these challenges and
- 5:50this BP Tesla deal serves as a unique neutralizer, it
- 5:53symbolizes that a union of two disparate industries for a
- 5:57common goal. Sustainable energy for
- 5:59transportation, electric cars, and sustainability shouldn't be
- 6:03a partisan issue. But in America, that's easier
- 6:05said than done. And we all know this Tesla holds
- 6:08a whopping 60% of electric vehicles ever sold in the US.
- 6:12However, with deals like this, Tesla might just be successful
- 6:15in making EVs the choice for everyone.
- 6:18So thank you so much for listening to the show today.
- 6:21Got a little bit political, but not too much.
- 6:23So hope it didn't turn you guys off for that.
