- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. Let's talk about the Band-Aid
- 0:30effect. What exactly is the Band-Aid
- 0:33effect? Well, it's often referred to in
- 0:36Buddhism as you know, you're, you're not really fixing the
- 0:39problem. What you're doing is you're
- 0:40putting a Band-Aid on it. So you stop the suffering, but
- 0:44you don't really fix the problem.
- 0:46But the suffering still exists because it's still going on
- 0:48underneath the Band-Aid. So when you decide that you have
- 0:53a real challenge with something and that you really need to look
- 0:56at it from a different perspective, you have to include
- 0:59that perspective of suffering. You have to look at it and say,
- 1:02okay, we've all heard that little phrase.
- 1:04Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional and, and I
- 1:08actually do agree with that because suffering is US inducing
- 1:13an attachment to something that we choose to have a point of
- 1:16view and we can't get past or we choose not to get past.
- 1:18I, I don't even say can't get past.
- 1:19It's like you really choose not to get past it.
- 1:22So we will all experience pain. We will all experience pain.
- 1:26Pain is part of life. It's just part of being human.
- 1:29If you're a human, you experience pain, physical pain,
- 1:31mental pain, spiritual pain. We all go through it and it's
- 1:36just part of our experience and whether you like it or not, it's
- 1:41irrelevant. It will happen.
- 1:43And first thing is accepting it and recognizing that you're not
- 1:46just going to throw a Band-Aid on things.
- 1:48You're going to have to, you know, suck it up and fix it.
- 1:51Now, this often comes up out here for me working with
- 1:55animals, the farm, all of it. I have to come up with
- 1:58alternative solutions because I'll be doing something like
- 2:01last year's tomato plague, the the dreaded tomato plague.
- 2:04This year I have to come up with something.
- 2:06Last year was it was very painful.
- 2:07I had done so many amazing tomatoes.
- 2:10They were all growing so well. I was super excited.
- 2:12And then I came out one morning and they were half like dead on
- 2:15the plant. Not the tomato part, but the
- 2:17actual plant itself, which was nourishing.
- 2:19It was dying off and I was devastated.
- 2:22I tried to figure out right away what could it be.
- 2:25I was frantic and that just jumped from plant to plant to
- 2:28plant to plant and to watch your hard work going down the tubes.
- 2:32It, it very much was like that scene in A Christmas Story when
- 2:36the dog, the bumpus dogs eat their Turkey on the table and
- 2:40the kids are going no Turkey, no, no Turkey this, no Turkey
- 2:43that, no Turkey Ala King, no Turkey sandwiches.
- 2:46And, and that's how I felt in my head because I was going through
- 2:49all the things that I could not make because I wouldn't have my
- 2:52tomatoes. And I was in my head so much.
- 2:56I was definitely suffering. And I thought about it for days
- 2:59and days. And then I moved from suffering
- 3:02to pain and said, OK, I have to come up with a solution.
- 3:04And this year we're trying a completely different solution as
- 3:08opposed to growing tomatoes in the ground.
- 3:10We are going to do them in grow bags and see if that will help.
- 3:14They'll be above the ground. The roots will not be able to
- 3:16get into where the virus exists. And then we'll be able to see if
- 3:19that will generate some great tomatoes, which is what we're
- 3:22shooting for. But this year, rather than just
- 3:25waiting and getting myself into the suffering state, I will not
- 3:29put a Band-Aid on it. We're doing it multiple
- 3:31different ways. So we'll do the bags.
- 3:33I'm also going to pot some and I'm going to grow them right
- 3:35outside my studio door so I can see them every day and make sure
- 3:39I'm taking care of them. No mistakes on this one, my
- 3:42friends. So Needless to say, the Band-Aid
- 3:46is often when we just want a quick fix, a small fix,
- 3:49something that can be, you know, temporary.
- 3:52And we say, well, this is good enough for now.
- 3:55And sometimes it's OK to do that.
- 3:56Just like when you have a paper cut, it's OK to put a Band-Aid
- 3:58on it. But often times we do use the
- 4:01Band-Aid when we should actually be using something a hell of a
- 4:04lot bigger. And we just have to figure out,
- 4:07OK, am I, is it because I genuinely have to wait?
- 4:10Maybe for financial reasons, you have to wait for something or
- 4:13for another person, you have to wait.
- 4:15Or is it just that you're, you're just trying to avoid it?
- 4:18And that's the one that where it comes into play in the big, big
- 4:21way. So avoiding things does not get
- 4:23us where we want to go. It just causes more suffering.
- 4:26So if you look at it from that perspective and you just say,
- 4:29OK, I'm not going to allow myself to suffer with this.
- 4:32I'm going to choose something different.
- 4:34I'm going to choose something different.
- 4:36I'm going to choose to make this a different situation overall by
- 4:40making a different choice. Then all of a sudden things are
- 4:42going to move in a different direction and everything's going
- 4:45to come back around and you won't need the Band-Aid.
- 4:49But you have to somehow start yourself off by taking in.
- 4:53Am I suffering for real? Is this just painful?
- 4:56Is it the Band-Aid I need? Or is it do I need more than the
- 4:59Band-Aid you have? Because if you don't know where
- 5:01you're starting, you can never know where you're finishing.
- 5:03So go find out about that and I will see you guys tomorrow.
- 5:08Bye.
