- 0:21We will begin with the addition dated July seventeenth to
- 0:25the twentieth, twenty twenty six. Our first article is titled
- 0:29Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Spreads to Kentucky by Olivia Morgan. Many states
- 0:35across America have been affected by the recent cyclosporiasis outbreak,
- 0:39including Kentucky. Cyclosporiasis is a food borne parasitic illness that
- 0:44leads to extreme gastrointestinal distress and severe explosive diarrhea. According
- 0:50to a statement from Appalachian Regional Health Care Director of
- 0:55Infectious Diseases, doctor Fairs Cotter, said the Cyclospora pathogen a
- 1:00fecal to oral illness is most commonly caused by unwashed
- 1:04fresh produce and contaminated water see Outbreak page eleven A.
- 1:10Our next article is titled Dream Center Seeking assistance with
- 1:14upcoming RAM Clinic by Terry L. May Community action organization.
- 1:19The Dream Center is currently seeking financial support and volunteers
- 1:23for its upcoming RAM Remote Area Medical Clinic in late August.
- 1:29RAM provides free medical services for anyone. Dream Center Executive
- 1:33director Rachel Dotson told members of the Pikeville Rotary Club
- 1:37during its regular luncheon meeting on July fifteenth. She talked
- 1:41to the group about the services the Dream Center provides
- 1:44to the community in addition to the annual RAM event.
- 1:47She said the clinic's services are provided at no cost
- 1:51by volunteer physicians, allied health professionals, and medical, dental, and
- 1:55vision students. However, the event costs the Dream Center about
- 1:59thirty one thousand dollars for lodging, food, cafeteria workers, janitors,
- 2:04and other expenses. The community's support is crucial, Dotson said.
- 2:08Last year we saw three hundred and forty six people
- 2:11and that was just in two days. It is a
- 2:13great thing. Dotson said services are open to anyone and
- 2:17are not based on income or availability of insurance. One
- 2:21of the things we learned last year was that eighty
- 2:24six percent of the people who showed up for the
- 2:26RAM clinic had insurance, she said, but they still have
- 2:29copays they can't afford sometimes see ram page ten A.
- 2:35Our next article is titled Hardy Family given Legacy Farm
- 2:39designation by Terry el May. The Pike County Farm Bureau
- 2:43has honored Walker Farms in Hardy and Lower John's Creek
- 2:47as the twenty twenty six Legacy Farm. According to Brent
- 2:51blakenshep Pike County Farm Bureau of Vice President. The Kentucky
- 2:57Farm Bureau Federation promotes and advocates for the agriculture industry
- 3:01across the Commonwealth and nationally legacy farms. A lot of
- 3:06times when people think of Kentucky Farm Bureau, they think
- 3:09of insurance only, he said. This is just a small
- 3:12part of what we do. We are a very big
- 3:15proponent and advocate for agriculture and farming. This award was
- 3:20established a few years ago. Blanket Ship said, we give
- 3:23this award to one local farm each year. He explained,
- 3:27it is a way to recognize our local farmers and
- 3:30what they mean to our communities. It is for local
- 3:32farms that participate in the county, have local engagement and
- 3:37have usually spread over multiple generations. Walker Farm's history Donald
- 3:43Don Walker eighty three and his son David are the
- 3:47primary operators of the family farm. They embody the legacy
- 3:51farm concept. I can't tell you how long the farms
- 3:54have been in our family, Don said. It goes back
- 3:57to at least my great great grandparents. At least. David
- 4:01confirmed that one of the farms belonged to the family
- 4:04before the Civil War. I have the tax ticket where
- 4:07they went after the Civil War and paid the taxes
- 4:10for eighteen and sixty two, sixty three, sixty four, sixty
- 4:13five and sixty six. He said. The thing was, nobody
- 4:17wanted to go into town then because they were afraid
- 4:21they would get volunteered by one side or the other,
- 4:24so they just stayed away until after it and paid
- 4:27all the taxes then. David said. The family has two
- 4:30primary farms. The first is on Walker's Branch on Lower
- 4:34John's see Legacy page nine A. This article is accompanied
- 4:39by two photos. The first, captioned Pike County Farm Bureau

- 5:20will be held on July twenty first. Coal Run Assistant
- 5:24City Clerk Jennifer Shepherd, event organizer said, each backpack will

- 5:33free and will be giving them away on July twenty
- 5:35first from ten a m. Until three p m. Or
- 5:38until they are all given away. Shepard said. The only
- 5:41thing we ask is that the child or children be
- 5:44with the parent to receive the backpack. The event was
- 5:46sponsored by the City of coal Run Mayor Andrew Scott
- 5:50and City Commissioners Joe Adkins, Trade Deskins, Beverly Joe Osborne,
- 5:55and Mike Steele. The event will be held in the

- 6:10ec Honors de Bourbon by Gary Sloan. The Elkhorn City
- 6:14Council had held its first meeting on July fourteenth since
- 6:18the passing of City Attorney Michael de Bourbon. De Bourbon
- 6:21died July eleventh at UK Chandler Medical Center in Lexington.
- 6:26We not only lost a city attorney, but we have
- 6:29lost a friend. Mayor Nathan Bryant said, Mike was so
- 6:32excited about the things we have planned for the city
- 6:35and told me he was so happy to be a
- 6:37part of this forward movement. The city of Elkhorn City
- 6:41has lost a true legal expert, and our condolences go
- 6:45out to his family, colleagues, and many friends, Bryant added.
- 6:49City officials placed a candle, flowers and a picture of
- 6:52de Bourbon on the table where he sat for council
- 6:54meetings and held a moment of silence in remembrance for him.
- 6:58Bryant had sworn to Bourbon in as a city attorney
- 7:01in April of this year. In other business, the council
- 7:05voted to table the final reading of the twenty twenty
- 7:07six slash twenty twenty seven proposed budget until the August meeting.
- 7:12Some of these numbers are going to change very shortly,
- 7:15probably by the end of this month, Brian said, so
- 7:18to be completely transparent, I recommend we table this item
- 7:21until the next meeting so we can add in money
- 7:24that is going to be released very shortly, so it
- 7:27can be added to the budget and the proposed budget
- 7:30be more accurate. Brian said that since the final passage
- 7:34of the budget hasn't occurred yet, it made sense to
- 7:36table until the next regularly scheduled meeting instead of calling
- 7:40a special meeting just for passing passage of the budget.
- 7:43The motion to table the second reading of the proposed
- 7:46budget was passed unanimously. A resolution regarding Elkhorn City Water
- 7:51Loss Reduction Phase two was passed unanimously by the council.
- 7:55Money for the water loss Reduction Phase two is a
- 7:58capital project as identified in the Water Resource Information System
- 8:02for assistance with troubled or economically restrained systems of the
- 8:07Kentucky Water and Wastewater Assistance ky W WATERS Program. The
- 8:12Elkhorn City water loss reduction projects will receive funding from
- 8:15the Kentucky General Assembly through the k y W Waters Program.
- 8:20Water loss in Elkhorn City has dropped significantly from last September.
- 8:24At that time, water loss was more than seventy percent,
- 8:27and it was forty five percent in June twenty twenty six.
- 8:31The city water crews have done a tremendous job finding
- 8:34water leaks and making repairs. Brian said, more work will
- 8:38be done to bring that percentage down even more, but
- 8:41this is a fabulous start. The Remote Area Medical RAM
- 8:45Clinic event was also briefly discussed, as volunteers are needed
- 8:49to help set up the event, which is scheduled for
- 8:52August twenty ninth to the thirtieth at East Ridge High
- 8:55School at Lick Creek. This year's RAM clinic will have medical, dental,
- 9:00vision and densure's service available, according to the RAM website,
- 9:05we have always been ready and willing to help the
- 9:07RAM clinics when they come into the area, Brian said,
- 9:10we will once again help in any way we can
- 9:12so they can have a successful event. The RAM Clinic
- 9:16is sponsored by the East Kentucky Dream Center and the
- 9:19Elkhorn City Area Heritage Council. The next regularly scheduled meeting
- 9:23of the Elkhorn City Council is set for seven p m.
- 9:26On August eleventh at Elkhorn City Hall. This article is
- 9:29accompanied by a photo captioned the Elkhorn City remembers City
