- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to jag zon this morning on Penani Stevens, Brian section,
- 0:20Speaker 1: John Osier with me. We also have a special guest
- 0:22Speaker 1: host will introduce in a moment. But Jaguar's riding high
- 0:25Speaker 1: on that week one win, but also turning the page
- 0:27Speaker 1: as we start to look towards Cincinnati this weekend. It's
- 0:30Speaker 1: still of some of the big things here today on
- 0:32Speaker 1: jag z Am, starting off with Trader James as a
- 0:35Speaker 1: big trade went down on Monday evening, becoming official on Tuesday. Brian,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but we talked about that crowded running back room, not
- 0:42Speaker 1: as crowded now, thanks by we traded up to Philadelphia
- 0:45Speaker 1: for a couple of draft picks to come back.
- 0:47Speaker 2: We surprised by the move, No, I think it made
- 0:49Speaker 2: a lot of sense. And Ryan O'Halleran woke this in
- 0:52Speaker 2: the column, so I got to give him credit. Back
- 0:54Speaker 2: in mid August, Listen, it was too much value for
- 0:57Speaker 2: the Jaguars to pass on, to be able to take
- 0:59Speaker 2: a running back for whom there were not going to
- 1:02Speaker 2: be a substantial amount of carries, and to move him
- 1:05Speaker 2: for a fifth and sixth round pick next year. Now
- 1:07Speaker 2: they have thirteen picks. They have three in the third,
- 1:11Speaker 2: they've got two in the fourth, they've got two in
- 1:13Speaker 2: the fifth, they've got four in the seventh. That's great
- 1:16Speaker 2: value and that's what they were looking for overall. Remember
- 1:20Speaker 2: Travis etn is playing on the fifth year option and
- 1:23Speaker 2: is likely, no matter how good a year he has
- 1:24Speaker 2: this year, to be playing somewhere else because the Jaguars
- 1:27Speaker 2: used draft choices on ba shal Touton and Lequin Allen Junior.
- 1:31Speaker 2: The future here is set on those two guys. So
- 1:34Speaker 2: to be able to take Tank Bigsby and flip him
- 1:37Speaker 2: into two picks and put him in a situation where
- 1:40Speaker 2: he'll be happy in Philadelphia where they run the ball
- 1:42Speaker 2: a lot makes a lot of sense, James.
- 1:45Speaker 1: That's und certainly not afraid to make any trades and
- 1:47Speaker 1: now stacking up those picks. So we'll have to see
- 1:49Speaker 1: what that turns into. Big thing Number two today is
- 1:51Speaker 1: going to be tail of the taste. Obviously, take the
- 1:53Speaker 1: first half of the week to look back at that
- 1:54Speaker 1: game against the Panthers and while Brian Thomas Senior did
- 1:57Speaker 1: have a touchdown a Russian touchdown, he only had one
- 1:59Speaker 1: reception and he wasn't overly involved. Coach Coon talked a
- 2:02Speaker 1: little bit about some of the miscommunications between Trevor Lawrence
- 2:05Speaker 1: and Brian Thomasior.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I think we try to get him a touch on
- 2:09Speaker 3: the first or second drive of the game, first play
- 2:11Speaker 3: of the game, right, we don't convert it, throw him
- 2:15Speaker 3: a screen low doesn't come down with it. And then
- 2:18Speaker 3: the flow of the game, we missed him on an
- 2:21Speaker 3: inbreaker which he had a lot of room to run,
- 2:24Speaker 3: missed him on a corner route where he was fairly open,
- 2:29Speaker 3: and then missed you know, had the one on the
- 2:31Speaker 3: out of bounds. So you're talking about that's five catches
- 2:33Speaker 3: right there. That gets him into the flow of it.
- 2:36Speaker 3: It's just the way the game went, and you know,
- 2:38Speaker 3: we got to details of route running, timing, depth, the
- 2:43Speaker 3: quarterback protection, everything goes into it. So I fully anticipate
- 2:47Speaker 3: him being able to get going John.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We's also success from the running backs in this game,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and even Trevor Lawrence running around a little bit. Brian
- 2:55Speaker 1: Thomas Enior had a rushing touchdown. But how do they
- 2:57Speaker 1: get more involved? Is it just getting on the same
- 2:59Speaker 1: page again with Trevor Lawrence.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Yeah, this is sort of a first world problem.
- 3:05Speaker 5: You know, he won twenty six to ten, and I
- 3:06Speaker 5: thought Trevor in the first half had a lot of
- 3:09Speaker 5: good throws and a lot of good reads throwing the
- 3:11Speaker 5: ball downfield, and you got Jammy Brown involved. They tried
- 3:15Speaker 5: to get BTJ involved in the first play. I think
- 3:19Speaker 5: he has six or seven targets. I think there. I
- 3:22Speaker 5: think they'll continue to try to get everybody involved early.
- 3:26Speaker 4: And then after that.
- 3:27Speaker 5: I really think the reality of this offense is gonna
- 3:29Speaker 5: be You've got Travis Hunter, who's pretty good. You've got
- 3:34Speaker 5: Yammi Brown it's pretty good. You've got running backs pretty good,
- 3:36Speaker 5: You've got printing strange. I don't know that there's going
- 3:39Speaker 5: to be a huge serge or a huge need of
- 3:43Speaker 5: We've got to target Brian Thomas Junior seven or eight
- 3:46Speaker 5: times a game in order to be successful, and I
- 3:49Speaker 5: think it's a problem to take care of itself. He's
- 3:51Speaker 5: really good. The ball's gonna find him and he's gonna
- 3:54Speaker 5: have his games. But it's not gonna be last year
- 3:56Speaker 5: where mac Jones was feeding him twelve times a game.
- 4:00Speaker 5: That's not good and it's not necessary in this offense.
- 4:03Speaker 1: We'll have to see how things evolve as the season
- 4:05Speaker 1: goes along. But good point, he did get a lot
- 4:07Speaker 1: of targets last year because he was the only option.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So now we'll do our final big thing today, which
- 4:11Speaker 1: is on to Cincinnati midweek. Start turning the page looking ahead.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Next opponent, it's going to be the Bengals. Now we're
- 4:17Speaker 1: gonna bring in our extra host today, marked up their
- 4:19Speaker 1: former linebackers fast to the Dagwars, but also a former
- 4:22Speaker 1: friends assistant with the Cincinnati Bengals. So we talked a
- 4:24Speaker 1: little bit about the defense pre show. We talked they
- 4:27Speaker 1: played great against the Panthers. Different story when you take
- 4:30Speaker 1: on the Bengals. A lot of targets there that are
- 4:33Speaker 1: of a different colgo. When we talked about Jamar Hayes
- 4:35Speaker 1: and Jamar Chase and T Higgins. So what are the
- 4:38Speaker 1: Daguars defenders going to be up for this week?
- 4:40Speaker 6: Well, I'll tell you what. Thank you guy for letting
- 4:42Speaker 6: me be with you. They're loaded in terms of weapons.
- 4:45Speaker 6: I mean, shoot, when you look at what Jamar Chase
- 4:48Speaker 6: has meant to their offense, T Higgins, Mike Yoseki, they
- 4:50Speaker 6: added Noah Fant at tight end. The fact too that
- 4:54Speaker 6: in the running game they've had Chase Brown now active
- 4:57Speaker 6: in terms of both a runner and a receiver. So
- 5:00Speaker 6: they've got weapons across the board and speed and they're
- 5:03Speaker 6: gonna distribute that. In this past game again, their opening
- 5:07Speaker 6: game against Cleveland, they struggled a little bit. They didn't
- 5:09Speaker 6: meet their standard. So we're gonna get their best shot
- 5:12Speaker 6: in terms of what Joe burrowin the offense and company
- 5:15Speaker 6: are gonna try to present to the Jaguars.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Excellent. All right, we're happy to have you here. Mark.
- 5:19Speaker 1: We're gonna talk a little bit more specifically about what
- 5:21Speaker 1: the Bengals bringing to the table and week tune what
- 5:23Speaker 1: the Jaguars are gonna need to do to get a
- 5:25Speaker 1: win in week two. So say with us here on
- 5:27Speaker 1: jag Zam jag zambrock you by Field to Auto Group,
- 5:36Speaker 1: Seafield's first Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. Head over to
- 5:39Speaker 1: Fields Auto Dot. Come up, we'll go back ato jags
- 5:43Speaker 1: Am here midweek. We're getting ready for week two already,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but we should still enjoy the victory from week one.
- 5:49Speaker 1: We try to turn the page and get prepared though.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Mark Dufner joining us today and a perfect time for
- 5:54Speaker 1: you to join us. Obviously a longtime coach to the Jaguars,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but you were in Cincinnati as well, so we can
- 5:58Speaker 1: kind of pick your brain a little bit about what's
- 6:00Speaker 1: going on in Cincinnati this week.
- 6:01Speaker 6: Well, I'm happy to share with you right now, and
- 6:05Speaker 6: I know for a fact right now that they're in there.
- 6:07Speaker 6: Even though today is an off day for the players
- 6:09Speaker 6: at the offensive particularly the offensive players are receivers, a quarterback,
- 6:12Speaker 6: they're all in there in the walk through where going
- 6:15Speaker 6: through their footwork, catching tennis balls, doing all the little
- 6:18Speaker 6: things to try to improve their game, to up their skills.
- 6:21Speaker 6: So they didn't I think they felt like they didn't
- 6:23Speaker 6: meet their standard coming out in the first game against
- 6:25Speaker 6: the Browns. It's in terms of explosive plays and things
- 6:28Speaker 6: of that nature. So they're in there working hard right
- 6:30Speaker 6: now in full respect for the challenge playing the Jaguars.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Tell us about Joe Burrow. We've talked at length about
- 6:37Speaker 2: him on the practice field. He's one of those guys
- 6:40Speaker 2: that because the Bengals haven't gone deep into the playoffs
- 6:42Speaker 2: except that one Super Bowl year, people tend to forget
- 6:45Speaker 2: that when you talk about Mahomes and Josh Allen and
- 6:48Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow is right there at the top with.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Them, absolutely, And I'll tell you right now. I'm very
- 6:54Speaker 6: pleased that I had the opportunity to be around this guy.
- 6:57Speaker 6: I mean the attention to detail he does, competitiveness to work, ethic,
- 7:02Speaker 6: the study, the leadership, trying to improve his skills that
- 7:06Speaker 6: he does just off the charts. He is as tough
- 7:09Speaker 6: as they come. I called him Buckets because he'd go
- 7:11Speaker 6: into the games and he'd take shots, and he put
- 7:13Speaker 6: himself out there to try to make plays and to
- 7:15Speaker 6: move the offense in a way I haven't changed, so
- 7:18Speaker 6: I never could try to crack in the guy in
- 7:20Speaker 6: terms of something that wasn't good, wasn't something that I
- 7:23Speaker 6: highly respect him.
- 7:24Speaker 7: I mean he is off the chart.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Yeah, full disclosure.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Outside of the fifty three players for the Jaguar, he's
- 7:30Speaker 5: my favorite.
- 7:31Speaker 4: NFL player right now. I love the way the guy plays.
- 7:35Speaker 5: And if I'm wondering from Afar, my sense is this
- 7:39Speaker 5: is a guy that maybe everybody in.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Their locker room doesn't love him or is his best friend.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Maybe he is.
- 7:46Speaker 5: My guess is he doesn't care about that, And my
- 7:48Speaker 5: guess is he's a guy that everybody in that locker
- 7:51Speaker 5: room believes as long as he's in the game, they
- 7:53Speaker 5: have a chance to win him at his score.
- 7:55Speaker 4: He's that kind of inspirational.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Leader without a doubt, John, I mean, there's no doubt
- 7:59Speaker 6: about that. I know they go as Joe goes, and
- 8:02Speaker 6: they're gonna follow him anywhere, any place, and they have
- 8:05Speaker 6: great respect for him.
- 8:07Speaker 7: You're right, he doesn't really care about anybody else, thinks.
- 8:09Speaker 6: His focus and his determination and trying to make the Jaguar,
- 8:13Speaker 6: I mean, make the Bengals be the best they possibly
- 8:15Speaker 6: can be.
- 8:15Speaker 7: As off the.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Chart we talked a little bit about them. They've had
- 8:19Speaker 1: slow starts right to the season before, probably didn't play
- 8:22Speaker 1: the way that they wanted to play last week against
- 8:23Speaker 1: the Browns, still got the win. You can't underestimate them
- 8:26Speaker 1: going in though, because Joe Burrow has the ability to
- 8:29Speaker 1: kind of flip that switch.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Without a doubt. And I promise you, like I said,
- 8:32Speaker 6: we're gonna get their best shot. I promise you that
- 8:35Speaker 6: they're happy to be one. And oh, they kind of
- 8:37Speaker 6: got that monkey off their back, but they didn't, don't.
- 8:40Speaker 6: I know, they don't think they played as well across
- 8:42Speaker 6: the board offensively or defensive as they think they can
- 8:45Speaker 6: and they want to try to rectify that. No matter
- 8:47Speaker 6: who their playing, their focus is it's really about us,
- 8:50Speaker 6: meaning they're thinking about the Bengals and how they can
- 8:52Speaker 6: get better on offense, defense and special teams, and I
- 8:55Speaker 6: suspect it's a scene for us right now on the
- 8:58Speaker 6: Jaguars down there downstairs as they're prepared, and it's about us.
- 9:00Speaker 6: How we can get better at moving the ball, how
- 9:03Speaker 6: we get better at stopping them, how we can get
- 9:05Speaker 6: better at field positions and special teams.
- 9:06Speaker 7: All those will be the focus this week.
- 9:08Speaker 2: If you were in the meeting room here and on
- 9:10Speaker 2: the practice field here, how would you advise teams this
- 9:13Speaker 2: team to get ready for Jamar Chase and t Higgins.
- 9:17Speaker 6: Well, you you know, you've got to still rely on
- 9:21Speaker 6: your fundamentals.
- 9:21Speaker 7: I mean, I think if you get too you.
- 9:24Speaker 6: Know, over anxious about what they're gonna do, you're gonna
- 9:27Speaker 6: lose focus and they're gonna beat you badly as far
- 9:29Speaker 6: as that's concerned. So you're gonna have to still rely
- 9:32Speaker 6: on fundamentals, have your eyes where they've got to be,
- 9:35Speaker 6: Concentrate on understanding what your job is, and do your job.
- 9:38Speaker 6: They're tough, you know, I've never seen Jamar Chase get
- 9:43Speaker 6: taggled by the first defender ever and I mean, this
- 9:46Speaker 6: guy can make you miss in a minute, and that's terrific.
- 9:49Speaker 6: And then t Higgins always says a way of coming
- 9:51Speaker 6: up to make the play. He'll go up and get
- 9:53Speaker 6: the ball when you don't think he can. So fundamentals
- 9:57Speaker 6: being where you should be. In other words, executing a defense.
- 10:00Speaker 6: Execution is going to be paramount against these guys. And
- 10:03Speaker 6: and Burrow has a way of finding ways to win.
- 10:05Speaker 6: You know, he's he finds the guys and so all
- 10:08Speaker 6: those things.
- 10:09Speaker 7: It's gonna challenge.
- 10:10Speaker 6: Every team that plays him to be at their best.
- 10:14Speaker 6: Henderson highly competitive guy. Trey is another one right now
- 10:19Speaker 6: that he thinks he can't be blocked. I promise you
- 10:23Speaker 6: he's another one that's in there today when they don't
- 10:25Speaker 6: have to be studying working on movement, is get off
- 10:28Speaker 6: all the little things that are going to make a difference.
- 10:31Speaker 6: So again, he commands your attention, that's for sure. And
- 10:34Speaker 6: he not only in terms of pass rushing, effecting the quarterback.
- 10:37Speaker 6: He can set the edge and you know, play good
- 10:40Speaker 6: run defense too. So and they used him a lot
- 10:42Speaker 6: in the game. I watched that game closely. He played
- 10:44Speaker 6: over fifty snaps more than you might think in terms
- 10:47Speaker 6: of an elite pass rusher, and he helped him as
- 10:50Speaker 6: far as that's concerned. So he's certainly a guy that
- 10:53Speaker 6: will command our offense's attention.
- 10:56Speaker 1: We talked a little bit about what Liam Cohen did
- 10:59Speaker 1: in that in that Week one contest in terms of
- 11:01Speaker 1: play calling. If you were kind of trying to game
- 11:04Speaker 1: plan for that offense, is that something you look at
- 11:07Speaker 1: just week one? Do you look at what he did
- 11:09Speaker 1: in Tampa all of it together, or do you focus
- 11:11Speaker 1: on something else?
- 11:12Speaker 7: No, I think what you ask is a great question.
- 11:15Speaker 6: Ky I would focus on what he did in Tampa,
- 11:17Speaker 6: especially in the latter part of the season, and then
- 11:20Speaker 6: clearly in this first game, and he showed a lot
- 11:22Speaker 6: of what his DNA is and really, I mean in
- 11:24Speaker 6: the first drive of the game the other day. So
- 11:26Speaker 6: they're going to run the football, they're gonna be physical,
- 11:28Speaker 6: they're gonna challenge you with distribution of the ball, quick throws, screens,
- 11:33Speaker 6: he ran four screens. He's gonna challenge you with bootleg pass,
- 11:37Speaker 6: faking the run and having a quarterback get out on
- 11:40Speaker 6: the move. And then he's got all these weapons now
- 11:42Speaker 6: that you've added. So I think that again, you know,
- 11:46Speaker 6: Al Golden's going to have his hands full with what
- 11:48Speaker 6: he sees from this offense, and he'll be very organized
- 11:51Speaker 6: in detail too, and his approach trying.
- 11:54Speaker 7: To stop it.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Thought that the Jaguars, they're obviously the more physical team
- 11:57Speaker 2: on Sunday, but I thought they display the physical ability,
- 12:02Speaker 2: the physicality as coaches like to say, to be able
- 12:04Speaker 2: to line up and play that way every Sunday. How
- 12:07Speaker 2: hard is that to do.
- 12:09Speaker 7: It's tough. It can be tough, you know, there's no
- 12:12Speaker 7: doubt about that. Where in Terear.
- 12:14Speaker 6: It takes on your body, the mental state of mind
- 12:16Speaker 6: you've got to be to be a fit in the
- 12:17Speaker 6: most physical team. But that's where it's won. And they
- 12:20Speaker 6: won the game in the trenches the other day in
- 12:22Speaker 6: terms of you saw it in terms of the run game.
- 12:24Speaker 6: You saw it in terms of pass protection. I'm talking
- 12:25Speaker 6: about the offensive line, no hits on the or one
- 12:28Speaker 6: hit on the quarterback, no shacks the defense, in terms
- 12:31Speaker 6: of rallying to get the run game stopped.
- 12:33Speaker 7: So that I think it's tough to do.
- 12:36Speaker 6: But that's a challenge teams that want to be great
- 12:38Speaker 6: have to meet.
- 12:39Speaker 5: You know, def I haven't had a chance to talk
- 12:41Speaker 5: to you much since you've been working with us. I
- 12:44Speaker 5: know you've been digging deep into the Jaguars and probably
- 12:49Speaker 5: like studying for an exam, right, like learning this team defensively,
- 12:55Speaker 5: give me one thing that just sort of stands out
- 12:57Speaker 5: about this defense that you'll like.
- 13:00Speaker 7: Well. I really liked their energy and effort. There was
- 13:03Speaker 7: good pursuit in the game.
- 13:04Speaker 6: They're tackling for the first game I thought was excellent,
- 13:07Speaker 6: and that's critical critical components.
- 13:10Speaker 7: You win with fundamentals, and I saw them out there.
- 13:12Speaker 7: They gave up maybe.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Three explosive plays, one on a quarterback scramble. And when
- 13:16Speaker 6: you have little or few explosive plays, that means assignment wise,
- 13:21Speaker 6: guys are in the right spot. You don't have coverage
- 13:23Speaker 6: bus or misfits.
- 13:24Speaker 7: In the run game, Jew but I.
- 13:26Speaker 6: Think had one run that was over fifteen yards, and
- 13:29Speaker 6: that can happen.
- 13:30Speaker 7: He aren't a good runner.
- 13:31Speaker 6: But I was impressed with their alignment, assignment adjustment, which
- 13:34Speaker 6: they had addressed in the preseason. I was impressed with
- 13:37Speaker 6: their ability to get the ball off them. They got
- 13:39Speaker 6: three takeaways, which three generally equate to a win. They
- 13:43Speaker 6: had fourth down stops twice. I think that were again
- 13:46Speaker 6: critical and of course of the game, the offense scored
- 13:49Speaker 6: ten points off the takeaways, So I really liked what
- 13:53Speaker 6: I saw, you know, totally. I liked how hard they played,
- 13:55Speaker 6: They seemed to trust each other. I like the way
- 13:58Speaker 6: that Anthony called the game to run in our pressure
- 14:01Speaker 6: and coverage together, where the quarterback as the game went on,
- 14:04Speaker 6: had his eyes trying to find a rush.
- 14:07Speaker 7: And struggle in terms of being able to move the ball.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Just a nice change of pays on defense to see
- 14:11Speaker 1: what they've turned into talking about it in the training
- 14:14Speaker 1: camp and seeing it executed in week one. Mark, thanks
- 14:17Speaker 1: for joining us so far. We're going to talk a
- 14:19Speaker 1: little bit more about the division as we check in
- 14:21Speaker 1: on the AFC South coming up after the break. For
- 14:27Speaker 1: twelve years, dream Finders Homes have been proud to call
- 14:29Speaker 1: themselves the official home builders of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit dreamfinders'
- 14:32Speaker 1: Homes dot com for all of the available inventory and
- 14:35Speaker 1: go Jags. Looking back into Jags Am here midweek as
- 14:40Speaker 1: we're looking back a little bit on last week, but
- 14:43Speaker 1: also looking forward now, we're going to look a little
- 14:44Speaker 1: bit around the AFC South and see what went down
- 14:47Speaker 1: within the division, so we'll know where everybody's at. First
- 14:50Speaker 1: of all, John, the Colts beats Dolphins and boo them out.
- 14:53Speaker 1: But the Colts really good or the Dolphins really bad
- 14:55Speaker 1: or combo both.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Well, it's so hard to tell and not definitely tell
- 14:58Speaker 5: you this too week one. It's so hard to draw
- 15:00Speaker 5: a conclusion like that. My senses, they may be a
- 15:04Speaker 5: little similar to the Jaguars, who beat a team that
- 15:07Speaker 5: I feel like they should have beaten handled business, which
- 15:10Speaker 5: is what you want to do. It feels a little
- 15:13Speaker 5: bit like the Dolphins may be in for a struggle
- 15:16Speaker 5: this year.
- 15:17Speaker 4: But the Colts, I think there was some inspiration involved.
- 15:21Speaker 5: They had a halftime ceremony for Jim Mersey, so I
- 15:24Speaker 5: think there was some adrenaline there in the building for that.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Peyton was back, so I mean there was a little
- 15:30Speaker 4: bit of energy there.
- 15:33Speaker 5: But look, the Colts were a good team last year
- 15:36Speaker 5: that really never figured out the quarterback position. Daniel Jones
- 15:40Speaker 5: could be sort of a renaissance story, so this may be.
- 15:44Speaker 4: There may be legit maybe something to watching him. Listen.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I thought that Daniel Jones was a solid contributor of
- 15:51Speaker 2: addition in the offseason because of Jonathan Taylor Duff and
- 15:55Speaker 2: when you look at Jonathan Taylor. He is an outstanding
- 15:58Speaker 2: running back. And because they've struck in Indian he's had
- 16:02Speaker 2: an ankle injury that has kind of lingered through the
- 16:04Speaker 2: last two or three seasons, people may have forgotten how
- 16:08Speaker 2: good he is. But when you have a competent quarterback
- 16:10Speaker 2: who has that kind of a running back behind him,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and the Colts offensive line, he's still fundamentally a good group.
- 16:17Speaker 2: They're going to be a hard out. They're going to
- 16:18Speaker 2: be a really difficult team for people to handle because
- 16:20Speaker 2: that quarterback can move too.
- 16:22Speaker 6: No question, Daniel Jones played like Indiana Jones. I mean
- 16:25Speaker 6: Jesus Pete. He found ways to make plays and they
- 16:27Speaker 6: made him in bunches. And then on defense, I mean
- 16:31Speaker 6: that game was dominant early on for the defense that
- 16:34Speaker 6: lou Ana Roumo dialed up for them.
- 16:35Speaker 7: I mean, Miami.
- 16:36Speaker 6: Couldn't move the ball, lick, And so I thought that
- 16:39Speaker 6: really the Colts offense and defense working together really put
- 16:42Speaker 6: forth a tremendous effort and held on to that thing
- 16:45Speaker 6: almost for the whole sixty minutes.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know, I saw that the Colts were
- 16:50Speaker 2: the first teams it's nineteen seventy seven to score on
- 16:52Speaker 2: every one of their possessions in a single game.
- 16:54Speaker 7: Unbelievable. Yeah, I mean it was unbelievable.
- 16:56Speaker 6: I'm glad I wasn't on the other side of that now,
- 16:58Speaker 6: but I mean that was very efficient production on offense
- 17:03Speaker 6: from defense for the Colt start.
- 17:04Speaker 1: NOWT definitely not a fun spot to be from Miami,
- 17:06Speaker 1: that's for sure. Let's look at the Texans a little bit.
- 17:09Speaker 1: A lot of people's favorites to win the division but
- 17:12Speaker 1: drop their season.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Opener to the Rams.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Some struggles on offense for CJ. Stroud and just their
- 17:19Speaker 1: defense is obviously very good, but their offense has a
- 17:22Speaker 1: lot of holes. Brian and we talked about that offensive
- 17:24Speaker 1: line with a deal with injuries as well, that's been
- 17:28Speaker 1: hurting them.
- 17:28Speaker 2: More well, and Duff can talk about Joe Mixon and
- 17:32Speaker 2: what he needs, and he's obviously out right now and
- 17:34Speaker 2: that has hurt them.
- 17:35Speaker 1: But I was.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Impressed by what I saw from Mit Chubb, who has
- 17:40Speaker 2: had serious d jury in the last two years, and
- 17:42Speaker 2: he had a couple of ten yard runs. I think
- 17:44Speaker 2: he had thirteen carries for sixty yards. If he can
- 17:47Speaker 2: come back and keep them balanced, you can keep CJ.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Stroud on his feet and then I mean he's an
- 17:52Speaker 2: electrofnic player. We know that mix it out really hurts
- 17:56Speaker 2: them though.
- 17:56Speaker 7: No doubt.
- 17:57Speaker 6: I mean Joe is an outstanding back both protection and
- 18:00Speaker 6: coming out of the backfield, catching them just running the ball.
- 18:02Speaker 7: I'd love having that opportunity to be with him.
- 18:06Speaker 6: But what you said about Chubb is strong too. That
- 18:08Speaker 6: guy into a pain that back then too. All he
- 18:12Speaker 6: does is go north and south and make plays and
- 18:14Speaker 6: getting sixty six yards whatever it was, and the ballgame
- 18:16Speaker 6: was again a productive DESIPI.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it'll be interesting to me to see what the
- 18:21Speaker 5: texting has become. Offensively, Stroud has some comments after the
- 18:24Speaker 5: game about, you know, we were lilly gagging a little bit.
- 18:26Speaker 5: I mean, I'm paraphrasing it, and I called a.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Wake up call.
- 18:31Speaker 5: They had trouble last year sort of becoming what they
- 18:34Speaker 5: wanted to be offensively. So they're an interesting storyline. I
- 18:39Speaker 5: think they are the favorite in the division. They're a
- 18:42Speaker 5: physical team and when these two teams play in a
- 18:44Speaker 5: couple of weeks, that's gonna.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Be where it's decided. But CJ.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Stroud and that offense, they're dangerous because he's really good.
- 18:52Speaker 4: When can they get to what they want to be.
- 18:55Speaker 4: It feels like that's their challenge early.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Well, and they're undergoing some sort of a metamorphosis at
- 18:59Speaker 2: white receiver. I mean, Stefon Diggs has moved on. He's
- 19:01Speaker 2: playing in New England this year. And Tangdell suffered that
- 19:05Speaker 2: horrendous injury in the playoff game in Kansas City last year.
- 19:08Speaker 2: And Nico Collins, who is a Pro Bowl caliber player
- 19:10Speaker 2: and a really difficult guy to handle, was a non
- 19:13Speaker 2: factor in Los Angeles. And I didn't see the game,
- 19:16Speaker 2: so I don't know whether it's because they just tilted
- 19:18Speaker 2: everything in his direction. It would make sense when the
- 19:20Speaker 2: other two guys aren't there, go get Nico Collins and
- 19:23Speaker 2: get him out of the game. But right now they've
- 19:25Speaker 2: got question marks at receiver. Dn Schultz, their tight end
- 19:28Speaker 2: is their number one target.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Yeah, there's some frustration there. That'll be interesting to see
- 19:32Speaker 4: how they You hope that they don't figure it out
- 19:35Speaker 4: until week four.
- 19:36Speaker 6: Yeah, amen to that, John, What you say is right.
- 19:39Speaker 6: I already looked at that film. Yeah, and they just
- 19:41Speaker 6: couldn't get in rhythm and they just and that a
- 19:43Speaker 6: lot of it was they were stopping themselves, you know,
- 19:46Speaker 6: no disrespected the opponent, but in the rams, but they
- 19:49Speaker 6: stopped themselves.
- 19:50Speaker 7: So they're struggling right now.
- 19:52Speaker 6: We hope that it becomes an internal itch on them.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Right now, part of the offensive line, as you talk about.
- 19:58Speaker 6: I think their center was banged up a little bit.
- 19:59Speaker 6: They had tackle another player got hurt, so it starts
- 20:02Speaker 6: there too, But they just didn't get in sync.
- 20:04Speaker 7: And we hope that continues.
- 20:05Speaker 2: And by the way, I don't think Christian Kirk is
- 20:06Speaker 2: supposed to play for the first month.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Of the season as well, which you know can linger
- 20:11Speaker 1: with him sometimes that he's been injured a couple times
- 20:13Speaker 1: the last couple of seasons here in Jacksonville. All right,
- 20:16Speaker 1: let's close things out the Titans. Cam Ward makes his debut.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I think made some good decisions. Obviously, with a rookie quarterback.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Do you try to just pressure him.
- 20:24Speaker 6: As much as you can, try to do everything you
- 20:27Speaker 6: can to make sure he's not can't see things you
- 20:30Speaker 6: want Sure, we want to disguise him. We want to
- 20:32Speaker 6: get him wondering what's going on, so we can't produce sure.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So he had some strong throws, stayed in the pocket.
- 20:38Speaker 1: He has some strong arm. But Calvin Ridley had a
- 20:40Speaker 1: couple of drops, had a couple other drops from his
- 20:42Speaker 1: wide receivers. That makes it hard as a rookie quarterback
- 20:45Speaker 1: when you're already going up against that. But Denver Broncos
- 20:49Speaker 1: defense tough too, So the Titans fault for the Broncos
- 20:51Speaker 1: in their season opener as well.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Well, I think correct if I'm wrong. He got sacked
- 20:56Speaker 2: six times. He was never able to set his feet
- 20:59Speaker 2: and be comfortable because the Broncos defensive front is really
- 21:02Speaker 2: good and the Titans offensive line, you know, they brought
- 21:05Speaker 2: in the big tackle from Pittsburgh. They's pent sixty million
- 21:09Speaker 2: bucks on him, and they have the right tackle that
- 21:11Speaker 2: they dropped from Alabama last year. But they're still in
- 21:14Speaker 2: flux with their offensive line, and you know, doctor trying
- 21:16Speaker 2: to make the transition from cave man football where they
- 21:19Speaker 2: just beat the hell out of you with Derek Henry
- 21:21Speaker 2: right to a more modern offense that doesn't happen.
- 21:24Speaker 7: Overnight, not even close.
- 21:26Speaker 6: And that's it again, getting everybody to gel together right now.
- 21:29Speaker 6: I mean they they struggled running the football. Like you said,
- 21:32Speaker 6: Denver gave that quarterback a lot of different looks, so
- 21:35Speaker 6: as you said, he couldn't get set right now, he's
- 21:37Speaker 6: got feeling pressure, he's getting hit six sacks. I mean,
- 21:40Speaker 6: it was just again trying to get going. Anything get
- 21:43Speaker 6: going was uphill and toughs lading for him.
- 21:45Speaker 4: I only saw highlights. The highlights I saw.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Late involved a really good Denver defense with a rookie
- 21:52Speaker 5: quarterback who at times late was fleshed enough that he held
- 21:55Speaker 5: the ball too long, which is sort of if you're
- 21:59Speaker 5: writing the script.
- 21:59Speaker 4: For that game, how that's gonna go would have been
- 22:01Speaker 4: how you thought. But it looked to me like.
- 22:05Speaker 5: The first three or four games you expect that from
- 22:08Speaker 5: rooky quarterback Like that, he looked like the arrows up,
- 22:11Speaker 5: you know.
- 22:12Speaker 6: I think the other thing that rookies don't understand until
- 22:14Speaker 6: they get in the season is the speed of the game.
- 22:17Speaker 6: It's a little different in preseason. Each and every week
- 22:20Speaker 6: it gets faster, and then when you get into the
- 22:22Speaker 6: season it picks up then and it picks up as
- 22:24Speaker 6: the season goes on. So for young players, first time players,
- 22:28Speaker 6: speed of all that's going on, it's hard to underestimate that.
- 22:31Speaker 4: It came in a couple of players where it looked like, oh,
- 22:33Speaker 4: that guy's here already.
- 22:34Speaker 7: Yeah, well, no, that's right.
- 22:36Speaker 4: That happens.
- 22:37Speaker 7: Never good.
- 22:38Speaker 1: All right, stick with us one more break and we'll
- 22:39Speaker 1: tell you what's coming up the rest.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Of the week.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Jags fans, you want to customize Dagwarsh furniture for your home,
- 22:47Speaker 1: check out zipchair dot com to browse all the customizable options.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Zip chair is furniture for fans.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Some footwork things, you know, there was a couple on
- 22:57Speaker 3: the mistargeted throws that you know, if you look at
- 23:01Speaker 3: he's nineteen at thirty one. We missed four screens, no,
- 23:06Speaker 3: three screens on O Maha to Diami on the right sideline,
- 23:12Speaker 3: and then you talk about the one to BT. It's
- 23:15Speaker 3: like a few of those, and he's twenty five at
- 23:17Speaker 3: thirty one for two hundred plus. And now you're talking
- 23:22Speaker 3: it's not about the stats, it's about the balance. You know,
- 23:25Speaker 3: it's about the balance. And so if you're sitting there
- 23:28Speaker 3: saying he could have been twenty five or thirty one
- 23:30Speaker 3: for two hundred plus and you try to eliminate the turnover,
- 23:34Speaker 3: you're sitting there saying he had a damn good game.
- 23:36Speaker 3: So what's nice is that I thought he operated the
- 23:39Speaker 3: offense really well. I thought he had a great command,
- 23:42Speaker 3: He used his cadence. We got the free play response.
- 23:45Speaker 3: There were some really good things that did show up.
- 23:50Speaker 1: They tooked tween Cohen talking a little bit about what
- 23:52Speaker 1: he saw when he looked at the tape of Trevor
- 23:54Speaker 1: Lawrence's performance, described him as solid but obviously, pointing out
- 23:57Speaker 1: a couple of throws that were missed, things that switch
- 24:00Speaker 1: the tide on. It looks a lot better, Brian, when
- 24:03Speaker 1: you looked back at Trevor's performance, solid.
- 24:06Speaker 2: But more to do well the second half. Obviously he
- 24:11Speaker 2: wasn't as efficient, and that's got to be The word
- 24:15Speaker 2: is consistency, right, stuff. You've got to be consistent from
- 24:18Speaker 2: the start of the game to the end of the game.
- 24:20Speaker 2: And you can point to the long layoff or whatever
- 24:23Speaker 2: it is. I don't know that anybody's made any excuses
- 24:26Speaker 2: for it. But in the first half he was better
- 24:28Speaker 2: than he was in the second. So there's a lot
- 24:30Speaker 2: of upside there. And I think if you go back
- 24:32Speaker 2: and look at last year when Liam was in Tampa,
- 24:35Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield really took off after Week four. That's when
- 24:38Speaker 2: all of a sudden you started to go, wow, look
- 24:40Speaker 2: at what he's doing. So there's a curve that we
- 24:44Speaker 2: haven't quite got to yet, and John, part of that
- 24:47Speaker 2: is you've got to get into the meeting rooms and
- 24:49Speaker 2: you've got to make corrections, and you've got to coach,
- 24:51Speaker 2: and you've got to get him closer to where you
- 24:53Speaker 2: want him to be with respect to the offense and
- 24:56Speaker 2: the game plan.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Well, you can win with the guy in the first half.
- 24:59Speaker 5: You can win with the guy in second half if
- 25:00Speaker 5: you have a big lead. So he struggled in the
- 25:04Speaker 5: third quarter. But I think the big thing with Trevor
- 25:08Speaker 5: that you saw when it was going right and when
- 25:12Speaker 5: they kept him out of the gray in the first half.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Like Leam likes to talk about, they were throws he made.
- 25:17Speaker 5: There were decisions he made. They were very positive. I
- 25:20Speaker 5: thought it was a good way to build. But you
- 25:23Speaker 5: can't have stretches like he had in the third quarter
- 25:26Speaker 5: against the teams they're about to start playing from week
- 25:29Speaker 5: two to week eight.
- 25:31Speaker 1: All right, busy week coming up. Who are you guys
- 25:33Speaker 1: talking to this week? What do you got going on?
- 25:35Speaker 5: I'm supposed to have Jordan Lewis nasone podcast. I'm excited
- 25:39Speaker 5: about it. I did not have him on it in
- 25:41Speaker 5: the off season, and I have not a chance to
- 25:43Speaker 5: talk to him a whole lot, but as impressive as
- 25:47Speaker 5: you can be coming in as a free agent. And
- 25:50Speaker 5: he's got a great story. What was almost a career
- 25:53Speaker 5: ending injury in twenty three or so where he basically
- 25:55Speaker 5: shattered his foot. And I'm not going to compare him
- 25:59Speaker 5: to Kalais because that was a special.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Thing in twenty seventeen.
- 26:03Speaker 5: But this guy's impact as a leader as a free
- 26:06Speaker 5: agent is pretty impressive.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I'm going to talk to Sean Sharrott, the offensive line coach,
- 26:10Speaker 2: and Duff we were talking about it. The offensive line
- 26:12Speaker 2: in his first game together with a couple of new
- 26:15Speaker 2: starters and a new coach and a new scheme. It's
- 26:18Speaker 2: pretty impressive how physical they were able to play.
- 26:20Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, you got rush for two hundred yards.
- 26:22Speaker 6: The quarterback doesn't get shocked, he gets one hit in
- 26:25Speaker 6: the game. I mean, excellent, very very good as far
- 26:28Speaker 6: as were concerned. A couple penalty things, but that's gonna happen.
- 26:31Speaker 6: Some of that was just over aggression. But jeez, I
- 26:34Speaker 6: think you'd be very happy with that guy.
- 26:36Speaker 5: That's a good Sunday night for an offensive line coach, right, Yeah,
- 26:39Speaker 5: absolutely it is.
- 26:40Speaker 2: And you can appreciate the fact that offensive line coaches
- 26:42Speaker 2: are interesting to talk to.
- 26:44Speaker 4: You never know what you're getting, right.
- 26:46Speaker 2: You might get the guy who's happy coming off of performance,
- 26:49Speaker 2: but he might just be like they call him the
- 26:51Speaker 2: mushroom society right there in the.
- 26:53Speaker 7: Dark and get over it.
- 26:55Speaker 2: He might be a little little crankedy. He might want
- 26:57Speaker 2: his guys to play just a little bit harder, or
- 26:59Speaker 2: you know, not be so full of themselves. I don't know.
- 27:01Speaker 2: I'm just throwing it out there, but offensive line coaches
- 27:04Speaker 2: are the most interesting assistant coach interviews that I have
- 27:08Speaker 2: ever done in thirty plus.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Years of doing this.
- 27:10Speaker 1: All the hard working out of the glory.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Right.
- 27:12Speaker 1: So it's a line as motto, Mark, you will be
- 27:14Speaker 1: back on happy Hour. You've been on Thursday happy Hours
- 27:17Speaker 1: with JP and Jeff. I imagine you'll have a full
- 27:20Speaker 1: game plan by.
- 27:20Speaker 7: Then for them looking forward to it.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yes, I will, absolutely, Well we have we're happy to
- 27:23Speaker 1: have you on am.
- 27:24Speaker 2: The doors right over there and you tell me where
- 27:25Speaker 2: to walk in.
- 27:28Speaker 6: To get out, well that's no saying.
- 27:35Speaker 4: It's right there.
- 27:35Speaker 2: If you want to come through it, come through.
- 27:36Speaker 7: Thank you so much.
- 27:37Speaker 4: All right, Mark will be back for happy Hour.
- 27:38Speaker 1: We will be back on Thursday. As well as we
- 27:40Speaker 1: talk more Bengals here on jack zam
