- 0:06Speaker 1: NFL explained is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:09Speaker 1: with I Heart Radio. Oh. It is a brand new
- 0:17Speaker 1: edition of NFL explained Mike m joined as always by
- 0:21Speaker 1: a super Bowl champion. Ever, I'm ready to go. I
- 0:24Speaker 1: usually don't like doing this starting off shows pop Quiz?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Is it okay? Let's do it all right, Let's go
- 0:30Speaker 1: back into the memory palace six. What happened for m
- 0:35Speaker 1: rob on that day, memorable day, That was the day
- 0:38Speaker 1: I got drafted to the San Francisco forty Niners. That
- 0:41Speaker 1: back in those days, I feel like it was forever ago.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But back in those days, what happened was the draft.
- 0:47Speaker 1: You had the first night that was the first three rounds,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and then you had the second day and that was
- 0:51Speaker 1: rounds four through seven, and the fourth round started the day.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And I had a party in State College in Pennsylvania.
- 0:59Speaker 1: It pends. That's why I went to school at penn State.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Because I thought I was going in the third round. Mike,
- 1:03Speaker 1: I really did, man, I had the Pittsburgh Steelers called me.
- 1:06Speaker 1: They said, hey, we have two picks in the third round.
- 1:09Speaker 1: We're gonna get you with one of these picks. I waited,
- 1:13Speaker 1: I bought a car the day before I drove my
- 1:17Speaker 1: two thousand and At that time, it was it two
- 1:19Speaker 1: thousand and seven Tahoe Chevy time. And that's when they
- 1:23Speaker 1: first changed the body. I drove a right off the
- 1:25Speaker 1: showroom flow. I thought I was doing it. I thought
- 1:26Speaker 1: I was a big time And third round happened. Pittsburgh
- 1:30Speaker 1: Steelers picked. They picked the returner, uh Willie read I
- 1:33Speaker 1: remember the guy they picked out of Florida State who
- 1:35Speaker 1: we ended up beating in the Orange Bowl just a
- 1:37Speaker 1: few months earlier. They picked Willie Reid. And then they
- 1:40Speaker 1: picked the quarterback from Bowling Green, I think in the
- 1:43Speaker 1: third round in the in the end of the third round,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and I was crushed. I did not think I was
- 1:48Speaker 1: gonna get drafted. So did you try to return the top?
- 1:51Speaker 1: I thought about it, I really did. I I turned
- 1:54Speaker 1: to my mom and I said, Mom, look, I gotta
- 1:56Speaker 1: take this truck back, like I don't know if I'm
- 1:58Speaker 1: gonna get it, if I'm gonna be able to pay
- 1:59Speaker 1: for it. And I remember my agent called me, Joel Seagull.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I remember him calling me saying, dude, relax, You're gonna
- 2:05Speaker 1: be able to pay for your truck. Well, things worked
- 2:07Speaker 1: out okay for you, and as you made reference too,
- 2:09Speaker 1: part of that Penn State team, you were actually one
- 2:12Speaker 1: of six Nily Lions actually taken that day, which actually
- 2:15Speaker 1: leads us to our topic today here on NFL explained
- 2:18Speaker 1: which colleges send the most players to the league. You
- 2:21Speaker 1: got schools like l s U saying that their DBU.
- 2:24Speaker 1: By the way, we always throw out these phrases because
- 2:26Speaker 1: I've had you Dove so Washington Pro Day the last
- 2:29Speaker 1: few years, and I go up there to Seattle and
- 2:32Speaker 1: I keep saying that they're dB So we're gonna We're
- 2:35Speaker 1: gonna put all this step and maybe I've been wrong,
- 2:37Speaker 1: maybe some other fan bases have been wrong. Peters exactly,
- 2:41Speaker 1: Marcus Peters, who was there when I was covering the
- 2:43Speaker 1: Pack twelve for a long period of time there. But
- 2:46Speaker 1: when we're what we're gonna do is do some quick
- 2:48Speaker 1: dives into the number. See which schools can actually say,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know what we are NFL. You obviously some schools
- 2:54Speaker 1: have better resources than others, But is there anything else
- 2:57Speaker 1: that you can point to for maybe your time at
- 2:59Speaker 1: Penn State, m Rob that says, hey, this is the
- 3:01Speaker 1: reason why school X has more players than other universities
- 3:05Speaker 1: in the NFL. Well, to me, I think it obviously
- 3:07Speaker 1: comes down to who you have coaching the team. I mean,
- 3:10Speaker 1: let's be honest, guys. You know a lot of our
- 3:13Speaker 1: high school players, a lot of our collegiate players, they're
- 3:16Speaker 1: playing the game of football in college so that they
- 3:18Speaker 1: can have an opportunity to play in the National Football
- 3:20Speaker 1: League and have an opportunity to support their families for
- 3:23Speaker 1: a very long time. So we we can't be novice
- 3:26Speaker 1: to to that fact. But I know, for me, a
- 3:28Speaker 1: big reason why I chose Penn State was one I
- 3:31Speaker 1: always played the long game. Like I mean, I've always
- 3:33Speaker 1: played the long game, and so I'm not gonna be
- 3:36Speaker 1: playing football in my entire life. There will be an
- 3:38Speaker 1: opportunity or a chance for me to get employment someway
- 3:42Speaker 1: somehow by dipping into this alumni base. So that's a
- 3:46Speaker 1: big reason why I went to Penn State number one,
- 3:48Speaker 1: number two. When I went on to visit there, obviously
- 3:51Speaker 1: I was in the College of Communications. They had this
- 3:53Speaker 1: big set up for me, man pray, you know, the
- 3:56Speaker 1: drum major and all of that type of of set
- 3:58Speaker 1: up with my jersey and just how you're gonna look
- 4:01Speaker 1: and I act like I was sick, and I sent
- 4:02Speaker 1: everybody home and I went back to my hotel and
- 4:04Speaker 1: then my me and my parents, my brother, we walked
- 4:07Speaker 1: over by ourselves to the College of Communications and I
- 4:11Speaker 1: had what sold me on Penn State. And I know
- 4:13Speaker 1: this has nothing to do with football, and we work
- 4:15Speaker 1: at a national football and there's a football podcast. But
- 4:19Speaker 1: what sold me on Penn State was an undergrad, a
- 4:22Speaker 1: young lady. I can't remember her name right now. She
- 4:25Speaker 1: was a sophomore. She literally walked me through the entire program,
- 4:30Speaker 1: the entire building. She walked me through how to use
- 4:33Speaker 1: Final Cup pro she I mean everything, And I told myself,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I want to know communications. I want to learn communications
- 4:39Speaker 1: at a level where I can do that. And quite frankly,
- 4:42Speaker 1: I remember calling Joe Paterno at the time and saying,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I'm sorry, old man, you didn't sell me. You didn't
- 4:48Speaker 1: convince me. This young lady did. And that's why I
- 4:50Speaker 1: went to Penn State. So when you're in the league,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and I know for a fact that there's a lot
- 4:55Speaker 1: of pride that NFL players have and where they went
- 4:57Speaker 1: to school and the conversations that are happening within games,
- 5:00Speaker 1: but I don't know, if I've ever heard of a
- 5:02Speaker 1: player pretending that they were sick on a recruiting DA
- 5:05Speaker 1: said that they could do their own thing on campus
- 5:08Speaker 1: and really learned. Have you heard, like your teammates in
- 5:10Speaker 1: the NFL, anyone else ever tell you a similar story. No,
- 5:13Speaker 1: nobody has ever told me that. You know, I advised
- 5:15Speaker 1: a lot of young people coming out of high school,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and some of these guys are starting to, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: filter into the National Football League. And I always tell
- 5:22Speaker 1: a lot of these guys, look, this is one of
- 5:24Speaker 1: the biggest decisions that you're gonna make in your entire life.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I was never This is before the transfer portals, so
- 5:29Speaker 1: we didn't have free agency or college free agency as
- 5:32Speaker 1: I like to say it now. We didn't have that
- 5:34Speaker 1: back in those days. So I knew that this, this
- 5:36Speaker 1: decision was gonna affect me for the rest of my life.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And and and at the end of the day, guys,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I'm proud that my school, Penn State. I'm proud of
- 5:43Speaker 1: my school because we've had three hundred and seventy five
- 5:45Speaker 1: players drafted all time, and our seventh most of any school.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So I have a lot of pride about Penn State. Well,
- 5:52Speaker 1: Emrod how about the Irish Yere Notre Dame. They actually
- 5:55Speaker 1: lead the way with five hundred and twenty two picks. Overall.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Part of me feels like that's because they were good
- 6:00Speaker 1: really before face masks, right, like a million nears dinosaurs
- 6:06Speaker 1: were out there and you got noted Dame helmets and logos,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know, fighting off like pterodactyls and the whole thing.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Number two, by the way, is actually one of their
- 6:14Speaker 1: rivals in USC, so I know, writting a lot right now,
- 6:16Speaker 1: is smiling somewhere. And William mc ginnis, who are gonna
- 6:18Speaker 1: be working with the total you know, throwing up yes,
- 6:23Speaker 1: which is still weird to say. In speaking of the
- 6:25Speaker 1: Big ten, I'll throw Ohio State into them. Makes they
- 6:27Speaker 1: actually sit at number three all time. The Buckeyes do.
- 6:30Speaker 1: They can flex a little bit. The most first rounders
- 6:33Speaker 1: with eighty seven, which is obviously a huge total. But
- 6:36Speaker 1: let's like a look at the construction of current NFL
- 6:38Speaker 1: rosters as of July this year. It's no surprise Alabama's
- 6:42Speaker 1: got the most rostered players with seventy three. That's just
- 6:46Speaker 1: over two Obama players per squad. They're followed by another
- 6:50Speaker 1: SEC rival. You're right, it is crazy l s U
- 6:52Speaker 1: with sixty nine. Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan round out the
- 6:55Speaker 1: top five this year Bulldogs. I mean, it felt like
- 6:58Speaker 1: I was covering the draft on NFL dot Com. It
- 7:00Speaker 1: felt like every other pick was one of Kirby Smarts guys.
- 7:03Speaker 1: But they set a record in the seven rounds AFT
- 7:06Speaker 1: Model fifteen players taken. But I think we should focus
- 7:09Speaker 1: in on quarterbacks like we usually do on NFL rosters
- 7:12Speaker 1: because this one is a little bit of a surprise
- 7:14Speaker 1: to me. Cal actually has the most quarterbacks on a roster.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So there's something in the water in Berkeley, right. Aaron Rodgers,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Jared Goff certainly comes to mind. Davis Webb chased yeah, yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 1: man getting a little burned with it with the Giants,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and then Garbage now in Vegas but tied for number two.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Explain this one to me. North Dakota State, the Bison
- 7:33Speaker 1: really three du It's exactly Trey Lance Carson Wentz Eastern Stick.
- 7:37Speaker 1: That's the one that I didn't really know about. Explain
- 7:40Speaker 1: to me how a school like that has three quarterbacks
- 7:44Speaker 1: in the NFL. Well, I think, especially when you look
- 7:46Speaker 1: at North Dakota State, it has to be the construction
- 7:49Speaker 1: of their offense. Right, they have a very very QB
- 7:53Speaker 1: friendly style of an offense, an offense that's a matchup base,
- 7:57Speaker 1: an offense that spreads you wide open and allows the
- 8:00Speaker 1: quarterback to have a lot of different tools to use
- 8:02Speaker 1: at his disposal to beat any defense. And I think
- 8:05Speaker 1: started with Carson Wentz. Carson Wentz, I think opened up
- 8:08Speaker 1: a lot of people's eyes to what's going down out
- 8:11Speaker 1: there in North Dakota. But our listeners have to understand
- 8:14Speaker 1: the style of offense makes a difference. When I was
- 8:17Speaker 1: getting recruited to Penn State, one of the biggest knocks
- 8:20Speaker 1: on Penn State that a lot of opposing school said
- 8:23Speaker 1: was they don't have a pro style offense. And I
- 8:25Speaker 1: didn't say it out loud, Mike, but I kept on
- 8:27Speaker 1: asking about, saying to myself, what the hell does that mean?
- 8:29Speaker 1: What does that mean that? What is having a pro
- 8:32Speaker 1: style offense? We're still just throwing the ball and catching
- 8:35Speaker 1: the ball, running the ball, trying to score a touchdown.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Like I didn't quite get it. And then I got
- 8:40Speaker 1: the Penn State And this is no knock on on
- 8:42Speaker 1: my school or anything on the coaching there at the time.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It was just it just was what it was. So
- 8:46Speaker 1: I got I'll give you an example of a play
- 8:48Speaker 1: when I was at Penn State, UM Rocky Pistol hot
- 8:53Speaker 1: red ninety one. Okay, I'm having a flashback to once
- 8:56Speaker 1: again my Netflix password from my cousin and our play
- 9:00Speaker 1: offensive play Calling episode. So tell me about very different
- 9:04Speaker 1: Rocky than the one I'm thinking of. It was again,
- 9:06Speaker 1: it was just basically, you know, the formation and in
- 9:08Speaker 1: ninety one was the protection, but it was also the route, quick,
- 9:14Speaker 1: easy right. They were trying to make it as simplified
- 9:17Speaker 1: as possible for the collegiate athlete. Same play in the
- 9:21Speaker 1: National Football League is double wing right, quick case right
- 9:25Speaker 1: to twelve a flat. I mean, it's telling every single
- 9:28Speaker 1: person what to do, right. And so guys that go
- 9:31Speaker 1: to Alabama, people that go to North Dakota State, these
- 9:34Speaker 1: quarterbacks are for four and five years actively saying the
- 9:37Speaker 1: vernacular that most of the National Football League is using.
- 9:40Speaker 1: So to me, that's what gets the guys ready. And
- 9:42Speaker 1: that's why you can go down to North Dakota State,
- 9:45Speaker 1: you can go to Kyle and say, man, it's something
- 9:46Speaker 1: in the water, because these quarterbacks come out a lot
- 9:49Speaker 1: more ready than other quarterbacks. It's funny because at the
- 9:51Speaker 1: top of the show you made reference to coaches, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: Justin Wilcons is now the head coach at Cal defensive
- 9:57Speaker 1: minded guy. But yet Chase Garber's was his quarterback that
- 10:00Speaker 1: now finds his way to the NFL. And yes, there's
- 10:02Speaker 1: been a little bit of a revolving door in terms
- 10:04Speaker 1: of offensive coordinators. But they did bring and a guy
- 10:06Speaker 1: in Bill Musgrave who is their o C NFL experience,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and I think it speaks to what you're talking about
- 10:11Speaker 1: with the verbage that some of these players are are
- 10:14Speaker 1: practicing on a regular basis. I also mentioned Alabama most
- 10:18Speaker 1: rostered players in the NFL. They also have a ton
- 10:21Speaker 1: of resources that always helps. Um. They are cornerbacks coaches
- 10:25Speaker 1: and safety coaches making at least eight hundred k year
- 10:28Speaker 1: sign me up director football recruiting, by the way, which
- 10:32Speaker 1: is probably more my skill set making a D sixty
- 10:35Speaker 1: five k dude coach. Can we get this dude to
- 10:38Speaker 1: raise please? Tied currently the most running backs and dbs
- 10:42Speaker 1: in the NFL, tied for the second most wide outs
- 10:45Speaker 1: and d lineman, and they have the fourth most linebackers.
- 10:49Speaker 1: They are a football factory. They're also a national championship
- 10:52Speaker 1: winning factory. Obama actually has the most first round draft
- 10:56Speaker 1: picks in the league by a margin of to fifteen
- 10:59Speaker 1: over Ohio State with the buck Eyes. No question, no
- 11:01Speaker 1: slatches when it comes to the wide receiver spot in
- 11:04Speaker 1: the league's second most line backers and D lineman. L
- 11:07Speaker 1: s U may not exactly have the most dbs in league,
- 11:10Speaker 1: trailing Alabama seventeen to fourteen, but they are tied for
- 11:14Speaker 1: the second most wideouts and tied for the number one
- 11:17Speaker 1: D lineman. So I know there's a lot there, and
- 11:20Speaker 1: you made reference to it. Your your old squad, Penn
- 11:22Speaker 1: State ninth most players on a roster. But there's a
- 11:25Speaker 1: lot of love for Nick Saban's crew. Yeah, it's a
- 11:27Speaker 1: lot of love for Nick Saban's crew. And not only
- 11:30Speaker 1: does the talent in college football kind of follow Nick
- 11:34Speaker 1: Saban and kind of is funnel to Alabama. Look at coaching, alright,
- 11:38Speaker 1: look at some of the x NFL coaches. Whether you
- 11:41Speaker 1: talk about Bill O'Brien he was a coach at Penn State,
- 11:44Speaker 1: whether you talk about Kiffen was there tea with the thousand,
- 11:49Speaker 1: All of these guys kind of going to hiding or
- 11:52Speaker 1: so to speak, down there in Alabama. And to me,
- 11:55Speaker 1: that's what sets down Alabama part the coaching. I mean,
- 11:58Speaker 1: if your position coach to have some of the experiences
- 12:01Speaker 1: some of those coaches have down in Alabama, it's a
- 12:04Speaker 1: recruiting tool. And I've been saying this for a while now.
- 12:08Speaker 1: With the n i L now being prevalent in collegiate sports,
- 12:11Speaker 1: with guys being able to make real salaries and be
- 12:14Speaker 1: able to make real money, I no longer think that
- 12:18Speaker 1: recruits go to college to win a national title anymore.
- 12:21Speaker 1: See when I was in school, that was big to me.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Do we have an opportunity to win a national championship?
- 12:27Speaker 1: I don't think that's the case anymore. I think now
- 12:29Speaker 1: kids are picking and choosing a school based off first
- 12:32Speaker 1: and foremost, how can this financially help my situation at home?
- 12:37Speaker 1: Number one? Number two, how can this training help me
- 12:42Speaker 1: to be ready to build my resume for the National
- 12:45Speaker 1: Football League? And that's I think winning a championship comes
- 12:50Speaker 1: a little bit later in the recruits thinking and development.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And so when you look at the team like Alabama,
- 12:56Speaker 1: that's why they get all the bigger recruits, that's why
- 12:58Speaker 1: they get the best players, they get all the five
- 13:00Speaker 1: star recruits or how State. I know Larry Johnson senior,
- 13:03Speaker 1: he used to be at Penn State. He's the big,
- 13:04Speaker 1: big time d Lina there. The reason why they dominate
- 13:07Speaker 1: and recruiting is because of the great coaching that both
- 13:10Speaker 1: of those schools have. You bring up an interesting point
- 13:12Speaker 1: on N I L. I'm wondering now if college football
- 13:15Speaker 1: the talent disperses a little bit, not only because of
- 13:18Speaker 1: N I L, but knocking on the door of an
- 13:20Speaker 1: expanded playoffs, all of a sudden, some more more people
- 13:23Speaker 1: get to sit at that table and go and eat.
- 13:25Speaker 1: And I'm just wondering, like, does that hurt teams like
- 13:27Speaker 1: Ohio State in Alabama? Well, I think it should. In theory,
- 13:30Speaker 1: it should hurt those teams, But um, I think and
- 13:35Speaker 1: I may get in trouble for saying this, but you
- 13:36Speaker 1: know we're on the podcast. It doesn't matter. I don't.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I think the big reason why Nick Saban was upset
- 13:41Speaker 1: early on when he made those comments about you know,
- 13:44Speaker 1: other schools paying players and and things like that, because
- 13:48Speaker 1: when there's rules set in place, that's the fence right
- 13:51Speaker 1: that you can operate in. And when schools and people
- 13:55Speaker 1: that know that that's the fence that you can operate in.
- 13:58Speaker 1: You also know what's the out of bounds, what are
- 14:00Speaker 1: the things you can do to give you an advantage.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And with n IL is doing now, with schools and
- 14:07Speaker 1: companies being able to pay real money to these kids,
- 14:10Speaker 1: is there's no longer that fence around the field anymore.
- 14:13Speaker 1: You know, there's no longer that out of bounds. And
- 14:15Speaker 1: I think that's why you have so many of those
- 14:17Speaker 1: big time coaches complaining player development, whether you're getting players
- 14:21Speaker 1: from n I L or just feuding with other programs.
- 14:23Speaker 1: And Nick Savan and Jimbo Fisher probably not on each
- 14:25Speaker 1: other's Christmas cards list, I would imagine. Just because you
- 14:29Speaker 1: go when you play for a particular school does not
- 14:32Speaker 1: guarantee success at the next level. In fact, Alabama hasn't
- 14:37Speaker 1: exactly done great at quarterbacks. People are gonna be at me.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I'm just telling you, like the numbers speak for themselves.
- 14:43Speaker 1: In fact, a few of the top colleges have really
- 14:45Speaker 1: struggled at the position. In Alabama, not the team that
- 14:48Speaker 1: I'm referencing here, there's one squad that hasn't had a
- 14:51Speaker 1: quarterback win a game in the NFL in its last
- 14:54Speaker 1: twenty four tries. Really Yeah, really, that's right. Oh in
- 14:59Speaker 1: twenty four find out who that is? Cot up backs
- 15:02Speaker 1: NFL explained. Welcome back to NFL, explained my cam m
- 15:13Speaker 1: rob with us all right, before the break, we said
- 15:15Speaker 1: that there was one university at hadn't had a quarterback
- 15:19Speaker 1: get a win in the NFL and its last twenty
- 15:21Speaker 1: four tries. You had a couple of moments to to
- 15:23Speaker 1: rack your brain. You got a guess for me, um,
- 15:28Speaker 1: why why? Don't know? Why do the Tennessee volunteers keep
- 15:30Speaker 1: popping up in my head? I don't know why. I
- 15:32Speaker 1: know that's probably not the answer, but I'm gonna go
- 15:34Speaker 1: with Tennis. Okay, I know why because they haven't won
- 15:37Speaker 1: a whole lot of football games at the college level
- 15:39Speaker 1: for a significant period of time. Not an awful guest,
- 15:42Speaker 1: Tennessee fast man. I am not making friends in the SEC.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I know that. Notre Dame. How about the Irish? Here?
- 15:48Speaker 1: All right? Brady Quinn, Jimmy Clastum, Shawn kaiser Ian book.
- 15:52Speaker 1: You almost feel bad saying that, just because sometimes it's situationals, right,
- 15:57Speaker 1: Notre Dame quarterbacks. Those wins combined at sixteen and sixty
- 16:00Speaker 1: four since two thousand. Wow, that even hurts me saying
- 16:04Speaker 1: that not to be outdone. You've got schools like a
- 16:06Speaker 1: high state in Alabama, they've also had some struggles. Buck
- 16:09Speaker 1: Eys quarterback seventeen and thirty four since two thousand tied,
- 16:15Speaker 1: so just three games under five hundred. So m robs.
- 16:18Speaker 1: What is it about the larger schools that doesn't always
- 16:22Speaker 1: equal quarterback success? Man, it's crazy hearing that list of
- 16:25Speaker 1: Notre Dame quarterbacks. Brady Quinn, we both were Haisman finalists
- 16:30Speaker 1: and two thousand five we both scored six touchdowns on
- 16:33Speaker 1: the same day. I mean, it's crazy. It was an
- 16:36Speaker 1: n C double A record. It was crazy. Um, I
- 16:39Speaker 1: digress a little bit. I'm like, I'd be puffing checked
- 16:43Speaker 1: out if I could say something like that. But you know,
- 16:46Speaker 1: it's a double as sword when you talk about quarterbacks
- 16:49Speaker 1: at these bigger schools, because on the one end, yes,
- 16:53Speaker 1: you're playing against the best of the best talent, so
- 16:56Speaker 1: you're able to show an NFL scout like, look what
- 17:00Speaker 1: I can do versus the Alabamas, Look what I can
- 17:02Speaker 1: do versus the l s Us. But on the other
- 17:06Speaker 1: side of that sword is you also play with a
- 17:11Speaker 1: lot of talent. On your side of the football as well,
- 17:13Speaker 1: with all the five star recruits that these schools get,
- 17:16Speaker 1: the four star recruits and so oftentimes a lot of
- 17:19Speaker 1: the quarterbacks and some of these bigger schools, the wide
- 17:21Speaker 1: receivers are running wide open. They have dominant defenses, they
- 17:25Speaker 1: have offensive lines that out of five blockers in front
- 17:28Speaker 1: of them, three four of them are first rounders. So
- 17:31Speaker 1: when you're playing with that much talent, to me, it's
- 17:34Speaker 1: hard to truly evaluate the quarterback position when you have
- 17:37Speaker 1: so many ferraris around you. That's why I think you
- 17:39Speaker 1: get a school like a North Dakota State, or you
- 17:42Speaker 1: get you know, some of the smaller, big, big, you know,
- 17:44Speaker 1: big time schools still but just smaller. You get those
- 17:47Speaker 1: quarterbacks sticking out a little bit more because they do
- 17:50Speaker 1: more with less. To me, they're the reason why their
- 17:53Speaker 1: team is so good, and so I think that's why
- 17:56Speaker 1: they stick out amongst the rest. Okay, so this is
- 17:58Speaker 1: probably a little old school, right. Bill Parcels had a
- 18:01Speaker 1: rule when it came to drafting quarterbacks had to be
- 18:04Speaker 1: how to have thirty star arts, at least twenty three
- 18:07Speaker 1: wins and a college degree. Now things have changed dramatically
- 18:11Speaker 1: in the college game. We're talking about freshman. If you
- 18:12Speaker 1: don't start when you get to a campus, you're like,
- 18:14Speaker 1: oh my god, I gotta go into the portal and
- 18:16Speaker 1: do the whole deal. So things have changed a little bit.
- 18:18Speaker 1: But is there something that you would point to in
- 18:21Speaker 1: that philosophy that does make sense where if you were
- 18:24Speaker 1: a GM you would point to a couple of those categories. Yeah.
- 18:27Speaker 1: For me, first and foremost, you have to pass the
- 18:30Speaker 1: common sense I tests, like I have to be able
- 18:34Speaker 1: to look on tape and clearly you're the best player
- 18:38Speaker 1: on the football field. Clearly you have all the movement skills.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And then obviously accuracy. I mean the number one job
- 18:45Speaker 1: of the quarterback is to throw the ball accurately to
- 18:48Speaker 1: the ball carriers, to throw the ball accurately to the
- 18:50Speaker 1: playmakers and let those guys go do work. But for me,
- 18:52Speaker 1: also it's the leadership skills. It's the soft skills, It's
- 18:56Speaker 1: how do you command to huddle, It's your communication skills. Right,
- 19:00Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, I would in
- 19:01Speaker 1: a perfect world, I would like you to have two
- 19:04Speaker 1: years of experience. Big knock on me as to why
- 19:07Speaker 1: I didn't get an opportunity to play quarterback, will get
- 19:09Speaker 1: an opportunity to try to play quarterback in the National
- 19:12Speaker 1: Football League was in. A general manager told me this.
- 19:15Speaker 1: The other quarterbacks in this draft, which was Matt Liner
- 19:18Speaker 1: J Cutler, guys like that, Mike, they have about ten
- 19:21Speaker 1: thousand more game reps than you do at the position,
- 19:24Speaker 1: and that was important for it does make sense. And
- 19:27Speaker 1: while you were talking, I was looking up trying to
- 19:28Speaker 1: find my notes from the year Trey Lance was drafted.
- 19:31Speaker 1: One of my good buddies, Evan Moore's tight end in
- 19:34Speaker 1: the NFL, played at Stanford. We had worked together for
- 19:36Speaker 1: years and he used to say, Hey, if you go
- 19:38Speaker 1: through and I don't have the exact numbers, but the
- 19:40Speaker 1: last like that was my guy. Man, I've heard a
- 19:47Speaker 1: couple of those stories. That's for another edition of the
- 19:50Speaker 1: podcast that's not called NFL Explained. Um, that's like NFL
- 19:54Speaker 1: after Dark it is. It's probably for that show. But
- 19:57Speaker 1: he he'd always said this, and I don't have the
- 19:58Speaker 1: exact numbers, but it was like, Hey, the last fifteen
- 20:01Speaker 1: Super Bowl winning quarterbacks had that two year or so
- 20:04Speaker 1: threshold of some of those starts, and that's what sometimes
- 20:07Speaker 1: that conversation about Trey Lands made things really interesting at
- 20:10Speaker 1: number three deciding to go up and draft him because
- 20:13Speaker 1: of the lack of experience, which by the way, is
- 20:15Speaker 1: going to be on full display this entire season. We'll
- 20:17Speaker 1: find out what Trey has from a Niners perspective, but
- 20:20Speaker 1: we have established that quarterbacks that have the most accolades
- 20:23Speaker 1: don't always thrive in the NFL. Got another quick quarterback
- 20:27Speaker 1: staff for you. There's been three instances where four quarterbacks
- 20:31Speaker 1: from the same school found themselves starting on the same week.
- 20:34Speaker 1: This is wild NC State, right, Philip Rivers, Jacobi percent
- 20:38Speaker 1: Mike Lennon, Russell Wilson. Remember, yeah, you're gonna count that
- 20:43Speaker 1: one who transfer to Wisconsin. Of course, Michigan State, and
- 20:46Speaker 1: this is if we're gonna count Russell. We actually can
- 20:48Speaker 1: find a fourth name here Michigan State. Kirk Cousins, Brian Hoyer,
- 20:52Speaker 1: Drew Stanton, and Nick Foles, who I always think about
- 20:55Speaker 1: it as an Arizona Wildcat, so but obviously spent one
- 20:58Speaker 1: year at Michigan State. And then sc you just talked
- 21:01Speaker 1: about Liner, Mark Sanchez, Matt Castle, Carson Palm are all
- 21:04Speaker 1: starting on the same week, which is to me kind
- 21:08Speaker 1: of cool. A couple of those universities getting some dudes
- 21:10Speaker 1: out there is super cos I've got a staff for you.
- 21:13Speaker 1: The only Power five teams that haven't logged, and he
- 21:17Speaker 1: starts in the NFL since two thousand, Arkansas, Minnesota, Georgia Tech,
- 21:22Speaker 1: and Nebraska. For all the success Nebraska has had historically,
- 21:26Speaker 1: they haven't had one guy take a snap. That's a
- 21:30Speaker 1: pretty shocking step. Welcome back to NFL, explains Mike m
- 21:41Speaker 1: and m ROB with you, Rob, Look, there is a
- 21:44Speaker 1: color that is meaningful, yellow yellow jackets, and you just
- 21:47Speaker 1: dropped Georgia Tech. I'm no, I'm not not talking about
- 21:49Speaker 1: those dudes. I'm talking about Hall of Famers schools with
- 21:53Speaker 1: the most Hall of Famers sc checking in at fourteen.
- 21:58Speaker 1: They got some dudes. Notre Dame eleven. Miami actually has nine,
- 22:02Speaker 1: and there was a hey, damn, maybe we're getting back
- 22:04Speaker 1: to that hey day with Mario Cristo Baul out there.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Uh Pitt also with not and then you've got three
- 22:08Speaker 1: teams m ROB with eight, Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State Syracuse,
- 22:13Speaker 1: who I always think of as a basketball school. Yeah,
- 22:15Speaker 1: they got seven dudes. And then l s U Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 22:20Speaker 1: we got yeah, we got my school up on there.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You gotta have pens. They gotta talk a little bit
- 22:24Speaker 1: sc which doesn't not super shocking, right when you think
- 22:29Speaker 1: about some of the guy I know a second time
- 22:31Speaker 1: on reference Ronnie Lot, but they've had a ton of
- 22:33Speaker 1: dudes come through that program as well. And I'll throw
- 22:35Speaker 1: this year way like, I think Willie is going to
- 22:38Speaker 1: be kind of adding to that list will beginners. I
- 22:42Speaker 1: think Willie will get in at some point, I mean
- 22:44Speaker 1: to be the NFL playoff sack leader. I mean when
- 22:47Speaker 1: the game was the biggest, Willie showed up. Now. But look, yeah,
- 22:51Speaker 1: I got another one for you. Okay, Look, the schools
- 22:53Speaker 1: that have had the most number one draft picks is
- 22:56Speaker 1: definitely the familiar teams, right Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Georgia
- 23:01Speaker 1: all have had five. Okay, not shocking because their dudes.
- 23:04Speaker 1: They got crazy programs. You ronicled what makes a successful
- 23:08Speaker 1: college program, player development, and coaching. How about the little
- 23:11Speaker 1: guys though, I mean this one sort of surprised me.
- 23:15Speaker 1: The Nonpower five teams that have had a number one
- 23:18Speaker 1: overall pick two Lane Tennessee State, Tampa, SMU Rice comes
- 23:25Speaker 1: to mind, pen Pen, Yeah, Louisiana Tech, by the way,
- 23:29Speaker 1: Terry Bradshaw, They're one of our guys. We're not surprised, right,
- 23:32Speaker 1: David Carr's out there, He's like, Yo, make sure you
- 23:34Speaker 1: include me in your show. Fresno State, I got you,
- 23:37Speaker 1: I got you, Colorado State, Chicago and then Central Michigan,
- 23:42Speaker 1: Eric fisherback in. So some familiar names that are out
- 23:45Speaker 1: there as well. And if we're gonna talk a little
- 23:48Speaker 1: bit about the really really little guys, there are four
- 23:51Speaker 1: draftees from Division three, two of them from Wisconsin Whitewater. What. Yeah,
- 23:58Speaker 1: you know they always say like, if you're good, the
- 24:00Speaker 1: NFL will find you will and like I used to
- 24:03Speaker 1: say that, but like not really believe it. I give
- 24:06Speaker 1: a stat like that, I'm like, actually it's kind of true.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Well they will, And like again, I tell a lot
- 24:11Speaker 1: of young football players in college, they go to small schools.
- 24:14Speaker 1: You want to get noticed. First of all, put yourself
- 24:16Speaker 1: in the scout shoes. They show up to your game,
- 24:19Speaker 1: they're watching the game. You have to clearly be the
- 24:23Speaker 1: best player on the field and just proceed to go
- 24:26Speaker 1: out there and break every single record that the school has.
- 24:29Speaker 1: That will definitely get you noticed. Okay, So I'm gonna
- 24:31Speaker 1: throw something and this we're gonna call an audible here
- 24:34Speaker 1: because you and I did not discuss this before coming
- 24:36Speaker 1: out here for the show. But I think you're uniquely
- 24:38Speaker 1: qualified because you mentioned it a little bit with some
- 24:40Speaker 1: of that, and I'll use air quotes around little guy,
- 24:43Speaker 1: but the resources, and I think Dion Sandras is sort
- 24:45Speaker 1: of changing this narrative. But the other week on NFL
- 24:47Speaker 1: Network we had the Black College Hall of Fame Classics.
- 24:51Speaker 1: So you've got to HBCUs squads squaring off and all
- 24:54Speaker 1: of a sudden we're seeing an influx of talent deciding
- 24:56Speaker 1: to go down that path. How much do you think HBCUs,
- 25:00Speaker 1: who have by the way, already had success finding guys
- 25:03Speaker 1: in the Michael straighthand rights like, there's just significant list.
- 25:06Speaker 1: How do you think that's changing the game. Yeah, it's
- 25:08Speaker 1: changing the game for the better and it's powerful. And
- 25:12Speaker 1: shout out to Prime Dion Sanders, one of my big homies,
- 25:15Speaker 1: one of my mentors, a guy that we all in
- 25:18Speaker 1: this game, especially in youth sports. We look up to
- 25:21Speaker 1: him as to how much he affects young people and
- 25:23Speaker 1: he has the cool factor to so Prime definitely understands
- 25:26Speaker 1: what he's doing. But yes, the n I L whole
- 25:28Speaker 1: situation is spreading the resources out. And I also think
- 25:33Speaker 1: today's young person, especially today's black player, I'm just gonna
- 25:37Speaker 1: be frank with you, they have access to a lot
- 25:40Speaker 1: of because of the Internet, because of you know, social
- 25:44Speaker 1: media and all those things. They have access to so
- 25:46Speaker 1: much information, and they're learning about the guys that came
- 25:50Speaker 1: before them. They're learning even more than my generation. They're
- 25:53Speaker 1: learning more about the people from black colleges that came
- 25:56Speaker 1: before them that paved the way. And so when I
- 25:59Speaker 1: talk to young people, what I'm hearing is they feel
- 26:01Speaker 1: kind of indebted. They kind of feel like they have
- 26:04Speaker 1: to go back to continue you the legacy, to continue
- 26:07Speaker 1: to allow resources to be headed towards the schools that
- 26:11Speaker 1: definitely needed. You started this show talking about coaches. Prime
- 26:14Speaker 1: for me was one of the coolest dudes. And then
- 26:17Speaker 1: you know, I think we've seen the documentaries. He's the
- 26:19Speaker 1: one guy that I think started to get other former
- 26:21Speaker 1: players right, like Eddie George is another guy. Do you
- 26:23Speaker 1: think we'll see more former NFL players of that caliber
- 26:28Speaker 1: start taking over HBCUs and pulling because of n I
- 26:32Speaker 1: L being able to pull more talent, oh, you know,
- 26:34Speaker 1: five star recruits. I mean, Prime is able to get
- 26:36Speaker 1: one of those dudes. The game needs us to do that.
- 26:39Speaker 1: We have to be that football at a PhD level
- 26:44Speaker 1: is us being all pros, us winning super Bowls. And
- 26:47Speaker 1: it's our duty as gladiators, as our duty as football
- 26:50Speaker 1: players to go back into the well and teach what
- 26:54Speaker 1: we know. And again we also come when I talk
- 26:56Speaker 1: about what we talk talking about former players, we come
- 26:59Speaker 1: with their street credibility. Right. Players know they've watched us,
- 27:02Speaker 1: they've seen us, they know we've gone through exactly what
- 27:05Speaker 1: we're telling them, and it goes along way in the
- 27:06Speaker 1: locker room. All right, before you wrap up here, you're
- 27:08Speaker 1: on the football field, you're playing used to wear the
- 27:11Speaker 1: Penn State uniform. Older guy that you didn't play with,
- 27:14Speaker 1: younger guy that you didn't play with, you know they
- 27:16Speaker 1: went to Penn State. What's that interaction before or after
- 27:18Speaker 1: the game? Oh man, it's you know, it's especially the
- 27:23Speaker 1: older guys, right because we all played for one yeah,
- 27:29Speaker 1: for one coach, the same story. It unites us all
- 27:34Speaker 1: I remember, you know, playing against a bunch of different
- 27:37Speaker 1: Penn Staters and we all give the your paternal voice.
- 27:41Speaker 1: We see each other, we take pictures and we go right,
- 27:44Speaker 1: said what do you do and stand up? I mean
- 27:49Speaker 1: we all do the same voice. So yeah, man, it's
- 27:52Speaker 1: a pretty special feeling. And again because we all played
- 27:54Speaker 1: for the same coach, it kind of brings us closer together.
- 27:57Speaker 1: It's pretty cool. Yeah, it is really cool. You know,
- 27:58Speaker 1: it was a thrill from me. I was hosting Total
- 28:00Speaker 1: Access and it doesn't happen that often. Now. I went
- 28:03Speaker 1: to Fordham University in the Bronx and I had to
- 28:05Speaker 1: tell you on the shortlist. And I've been pretty fortunate
- 28:08Speaker 1: here since I started to be able to interview a
- 28:09Speaker 1: lot of like really talented current NFL players. I could
- 28:13Speaker 1: not have been more excited to talk to Chase Edmonds
- 28:15Speaker 1: really like I get him and I'm like, dude, Arthur Avenue,
- 28:19Speaker 1: Pugsley's chicken rolling. It's but it's like those moments that
- 28:23Speaker 1: you know, like not for nothing, like Chas isn't. There's
- 28:25Speaker 1: not a lot of a lot of Fordham dudes, right,
- 28:27Speaker 1: And there's only thirty two players from NFL drafted, twenty
- 28:30Speaker 1: nine of those coming from nine or sooner. You got
- 28:34Speaker 1: John Skelton, the quarterback who was actually with Arizona for
- 28:36Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah. Um, and I obviously made reference
- 28:40Speaker 1: to Chase Edmonds who's now with the Dolphins, and then
- 28:42Speaker 1: think zakel who got drafted by the Niners. I was
- 28:45Speaker 1: doing the draft for NFL dot Com. I see Fordham
- 28:49Speaker 1: six round, dude, I went crazy in the break and
- 28:51Speaker 1: everyone's looking at me. I'm like, guys, Fordham, there's not
- 28:54Speaker 1: many Can we just own it a little bit? And
- 28:56Speaker 1: I think that's one of the coolest things. People always
- 28:58Speaker 1: ask me, Hey, what's the difference between, you know, covering
- 29:00Speaker 1: in the college game and covering the pro game. And
- 29:03Speaker 1: it's those moments, right, like the paternal voice that for
- 29:05Speaker 1: turn right, Like those little subtle things from being on
- 29:08Speaker 1: that campus. I think is always cool. But you go
- 29:10Speaker 1: into any NFL city and to see the jerseys of
- 29:13Speaker 1: all all those teams, I mean, you know, you experience
- 29:15Speaker 1: it like being on the field is pretty bad as
- 29:17Speaker 1: it is, it's cool. And again like the jersey swaps,
- 29:21Speaker 1: I mean, like most of the pens, they guys that
- 29:23Speaker 1: I've played against, I mean I get their jersey afterwards.
- 29:25Speaker 1: You you know, you get to exchange ideas and not
- 29:28Speaker 1: only seeing them after you play them in the National
- 29:30Speaker 1: Football League, playing against them in the National Football League,
- 29:33Speaker 1: and then seeing them when you go back to college
- 29:36Speaker 1: is even bigger treatment. Yeah, it's uh, it's pretty wild man.
- 29:39Speaker 1: And to see these dudes celebrate. I was at the
- 29:41Speaker 1: Rose Bowl. Actually it was USC Penn State. Barkley was there.
- 29:44Speaker 1: It was Kwan's year at the Rolls. But that wasn't
- 29:46Speaker 1: great for yours. It was to remind me. Yeah, I'm
- 29:50Speaker 1: on the sideline and it's Ronnie lot Liner, Sanchez, Lynn Swat,
- 29:54Speaker 1: like those dudes are celebrating like their college kids on
- 29:57Speaker 1: the sideline. It's it's it's kind of awesome to see
- 30:00Speaker 1: some of that because the legends it does. It does
- 30:03Speaker 1: all right, final thing here before you let everyone going NFL,
- 30:07Speaker 1: You like, is there one program or you just say,
- 30:09Speaker 1: you know what, like this squad's got the bragging rights,
- 30:11Speaker 1: because yeah, you could go most drafted, Notre Dame, you
- 30:14Speaker 1: could go most you know, Hall of famers that see
- 30:16Speaker 1: most first round pick. You know, we we've chronicled a
- 30:18Speaker 1: lot of it. I would have to go, at least
- 30:21Speaker 1: in the modern times. It has to be Alabama. Yeah,
- 30:24Speaker 1: I mean, it just has to be. I mean, I
- 30:25Speaker 1: don't know if there's been another program that's dominated for
- 30:28Speaker 1: so long with athletes being able to go almost anywhere
- 30:32Speaker 1: in the country. I mean, they've just dominated for a decade,
- 30:35Speaker 1: almost two decades. It's pretty wild. It's that saving guy
- 30:38Speaker 1: who apparently is pretty good NFL you. It has been
- 30:43Speaker 1: awesome to go through some of these teams. Perfect job
- 30:45Speaker 1: by you as always. Man, having a blast doing this podcast.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Of course, you can find us on social media at
- 30:50Speaker 1: Mike Underscore Yeah, and I know you're you're kind of
- 30:53Speaker 1: a social media yeah, on my Twitter at real mic Rob,
- 30:56Speaker 1: Instagram at Real Underscore, Mike Underscore Rob. I gotta say
- 31:00Speaker 1: all Mike Yeah. If there's a topic that you'd like
- 31:03Speaker 1: us to cover, or a question you just don't know
- 31:04Speaker 1: an answer to, you can add us and I prompise
- 31:07Speaker 1: it will make one of our NFL Explained episodes. Thanks
- 31:10Speaker 1: so much for listening.
