- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Hey friends, welcome to the Empowered Homes Podcast.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: The purpose of this podcast is to grow strong families and get resources in your hands to help you win at home.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm Bobby, joining in studio with my pal, Meg.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Hey friends.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We took the summer off.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: A summer minute.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And uh we're we're back rocking and rolling.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Uh we got all the things.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: We got school starting.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Are you ready?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: I'm not.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Actually, I'm not ready.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I kind of want summer to to last a little longer, which is this is like the first year that I've ever really wanted summer to go just like a little bit longer.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, can can we not start school yet?
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: I know, but I know the majority of parents are like like cheering, they're so excited.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Like, let's get this routine party started because you know, and I I was talking to a mom yesterday at Meet the Teacher, and she was like, I am tired of being my kids' activities director for the summer, and we need a routine so that they have something to do.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Well, that's fair.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Like, I can understand that.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Under understood.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: But summer's super fun.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I thought, you know, as we kick off this new season of episodes, we're wanting to be more strategic in how we organize.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Most of the time we're just saying random stuff when we get on here.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: But uh very important random stuff.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, but you know, being more strategic and getting some wise counsel um about kind of how we format so that you know the audience and the listeners are like, oh, I'm expecting when they talk about this segment or this topic or whatever.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And so starting off with a a new segment, it's it's called This Week in My House, where you're just gonna hear from me and Meg about what's going on in our homes.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: But instead of this week, let's talk about summer.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: This summer at my house.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Uh Meg, how was your summer?
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: It was a great summer.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: We we had a like good mix of church activities, so mission trips and camps and um different things like that.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: And then we had a chance to go on a vacation and we got to see family and and then honestly the days in between were just kind of like very chill, which was so great for us.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Like we weren't we weren't over involved in things outside of of some of our trips and stuff, so yeah, it was good.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, summertime for us.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Um, man, it I I was joking with someone yesterday.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I was like, why did it go so fast?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Like for whatever reason, this summer went faster than any other summer.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know how that works with time travel, but well, um I mean maybe the earth is spinning faster, El Nino has has changed.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Weather weather patterns, I don't know.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: It just felt like it was like we got out of school and now it's over.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but we had a lot of fun, a lot of church trips, camp, mission trips with uh two of my kids, and it was it was super fun.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Um, Meg, what was like I don't know, not top five moments, but is there one or two things that you're like looking back on summer 2026, you're like, oh, I'll never forget this.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I I just felt like the nights when we stayed in and just kind of like all piled on the couch and watched a movie and just like chilled.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: I think those, I don't know, they were just like my favorite this summer, even though we got to do some really fun things and um we we got to cruise in the Caribbean, so that was really fun, um, memorable, but I just feel like I don't know, it was like just just the kind of like more down milder moments, I guess, were sweet.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, slow moments.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: We had a lot of those, not many, but we had we had several days where we, you know, get going in the day and we look up and the kids have been playing on their devices for way longer than they're supposed to.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that was there, definitely.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: We'll talk about some of that later, but uh something that's super random that I did this summer, and he's gonna make fun of me if he ever hears this, which he never listens, but my oldest son.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, when he was younger, he would want me to like sit and play with him and like play Legos or when we started playing video games, like man, like watch me play uh Minecraft, which is oh hurts my head watching how fast they do stuff.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: It just makes me sick to my stomach.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: But this summer, um I learned how to play Rocket League.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Are you familiar with Rocket League?
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think I've heard it mentioned by our 16-year-old son, but I don't know it.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Hey Zeus, do you you play Rocket League?
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I used to.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So I I I think it was popular a couple years ago and now it's like back.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Um basically you're you drive a car and you play soccer.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: I think the World Kit World Cup this summer brought it back.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Like you drive a car somewhere to play soccer?
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: No, you are basically driving a car in a ring.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, and you are you are playing soccer with the car.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're hitting the ball.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Interesting, and there's rockets on your car.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Um, I know there's probably listeners going, you explain that terribly.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: But essentially, you're you're you got a soccer ball and you play with like three other friends, and you're trying to score on the other team.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but there's also like saves and blocks, and I I I got pretty good at Rocket League this summer playing with Charlie.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And uh that's awesome.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: It was one of the things where he invited me in, and then I started he started getting really good, and then I started playing with his friends, and then they all started getting mad at me because I'm not that good.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: They're like, uh, Mr.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Bobby, you you missed, you blew it.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And so I have this like pressure from 13, 14-year-olds on me.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I'm like, guys, like stop talking trash.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: But um that was a fun thing, and then we had several TV shows that we you know, we watched stuff with Chandler.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: It was just me and Jen, and Chandler got really heavy into documentaries.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: She's yeah, we watched some crazy stuff, and then some of the Disney shows that we haven't watched.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Um, me and Charlie and Chapman watched a bunch of Marvel stuff.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, those were probably the the the highlights for for us being at home and just the kids inviting us into hanging out and into their world.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And there's times where we were like, y'all leave us alone.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Like we but trying we we said several times, let's be a yes parent, you know.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And so Rocket League.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: So if anybody wants to play or look me up, my gamer thing.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, what was it called?
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: You're gonna throw it out there, a handle?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: My handle.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: What's it called?
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Gamer tag.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Gamer Tag.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, gamer tag.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: See, we know nothing.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: My gamer thing handle tag, yeah.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Uh Coolie Dad.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: That's me.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: So that's awesome.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: If you see a coolie dad cooking on some 14-year-olds, or not disappointing 14-year-olds, yes, yes, mostly.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Well, you brought up yes parent, and uh you know, I was just looking at our social media, which I did not consistently post on our social media for empowered homes this summer because we were just like doing all the things.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we were everywhere, but I was looking at because our friend Brad Fleury was on the homeward podcast, and so they collaborated with us on a post about him talking about being a yes dad.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and in the world of Empowered Homes, it has gone viral.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: It has.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: I think it's because you know, we got like 500 views on some, 1900 views on some.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: That's almost at 200,000 views.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: So shout out to our to our friend Brad.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Brad's going viral.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, being a yes parent.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Be a yes parent.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: So anyway, I just thought that was fun.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if you're not following us on socials, we got stuff on there.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: We do.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: So that's our segment this week at my house or this summer at my house.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Let's transition.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Um, let's let's highlight a resource.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: We want to highlight a resource every time we we get on here because the podcast is to get resources in the hands of parents so they can win at home.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: And uh, we have a new one as school is starting.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Meg, what do we have?
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: You did an incredible job putting this thing together.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: What is this?
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's our it's our kind of our annual now back to school guide for the 2026 fall, um, jumping back into school and routine and really um, you know, it it's it's meant to be a resource for parents and for kids, um, but mostly for parents to help guide their kids through just different aspects of going back to school.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: And so we kind of switch it up every year.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: And this year, the focus was um what I love is you and I had talked about um just a a word and a scripture that God had laid on your heart about, you know, what's really important when you go into um back to school or or really just parenting in general, and and how are you, you know, um, how are you seeing your kids and and and what are you what are you really highlighting in their lives?
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: And so um a parent's greatest joy, and and um that was uh an article that we added in there.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: And then there's a couple other um resources too about making wise decisions, um a pack, a pack your heart family devotional for families to walk through, and then um a really fun back to school bingo.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of this challenge of and and and I'm sure parents have seen, you know, bingo of kind of a get-to-know-you type of bingo, but really it's to help your kids go to school and identify the people around them that maybe need encouragement or blessing or they want to pray for them.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: And and it also is a way for them to learn their names and then come home and maybe write down their names and you try to get a bingo for the whole semester or the year or whatever it is.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Um anyway, but just just super fun things.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Um hopefully it's it's easy for parents to take and and use so that they can um lead their kids to make wise choices and really to to pack God's word in their heart um more than they worry about packing up their backpacks.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I know you've mentioned this.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Uh this is kind of one of your favorite ones that you've done.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: And I think because it's so practical and there's so much like just immediate application through everything, like let's go through the before I say yes section because I think there's so many times where parents feel overwhelmed, and we feel that, even going starting school soon, and and we're feeling that.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Explain to to us like what this section's all about.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, before I say yes, it actually came from um uh just a resource that was given to some of our staff here at Kingsland, and it was just sort of this framework for um, you know, how how do we really put boundaries and kind of guardrails over our time?
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: And so it was a resource I think that Brad gave or someone gave, um, and it was this series of questions of before you say yes to something, ask these questions of yourself.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: And so I took that and and thinking through the lens of a parent and and a child and how so easily we get um overpacked in our schedules.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: And so really taking this framework and kind of making it a little bit more simple so that you and your kid can walk through it.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Or really, this is like teaching your kid this process so that they can learn it.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: And eventually when they're having to make decisions on their own, they're doing it themselves, you know.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: But I boiled it down to just these few questions that they can ask when they're sort of evaluating.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's a new activity, maybe they want to join a club team for a sport or a band, um, an extra band curricular activity, or um maybe it's even like going to a sleepover or committing to volunteering or whatever it is.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: And we talk often about how you know you can have all good things.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: And you can even be so overcommitted to good things that it leads to overwhelm, it leads to um, can lead to anxiety, it can lead to a lack of connection amongst your family.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: So anyway, going through these questions and and walking with your kids until they kind of can do this process for themselves.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: So the first page is just these questions that you can go through.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Um, have I prayed about this and asked God for guidance?
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Have I talked to my parents or guardian?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Why am I saying yes?
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And do I have enough time or room in my schedule?
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: And so just there's questions within those, those little sections that can help you process.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: And honestly, I took this to um our support staff meeting.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's like, you know, there's there's like 40 of us or something.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: And I and I brought this to them and I was like, I think this is good for even us as adults.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: You may not still ask your parents, yeah, yeah.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: You know, but you may need to ask wise counsel.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: And so um it was fun just to to share it because I think it's good for for kids and for adults and parents.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love this part.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Have I talked to my parents or guardian?
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, remember, your parents may see potential issues or concerns that you don't.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you need to trust without always understanding.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Man, what a time to be alive where that is a true statement.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: You know, you you tell your kids, hey, here's some things that I see.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: It's ultimately your decision.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Because it's it is their decision on some stuff.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, here's some stuff I see, and then you know, fast forward six months, everything that you told them was possibly gonna happen, happens.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: You're stuck in this weird thing of teaching and training your kids where you're like, I kind of need you to fail in experiences because you didn't trust or believe me ahead of time.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: But yeah, uh if kids could remember that, I know that's a that's a key one.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, and I think the why am I saying yes part is is so interesting, I think, to to teach kids to think through because you know, how often do we, as especially when we were younger, like how often do we say yes because oh my friends are saying yes or oh, everybody else is doing it?
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: And and I get it.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Sometimes like that is that's a part of growing up and learning and stuff like that.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: But you know, asking yourself, like, do I really want to do this?
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Do I think that God is leading me to do that?
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Or am I afraid of missing out?
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: And I mean, I know adults that they don't they say yes because they're afraid of missing out, you know, and and or maybe you don't want to disappoint something, someone, you know, learning that it's okay that somebody might be disappointed that you say no, but that it's still okay.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Like they can be disappointed and you can be okay, and that's fine, you know.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so yeah, it's so good.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: And then flip it over.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: I love the test.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Break down the test for me.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so the yes test is really just kind of taking these um questions and and putting it in like a little bit of a checklist.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: And so as I would I would assume that as parents and and kids start to do this process more often, then they can just go straight to this little test and each decision they can walk through.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: And if they can check most of these these boxes off, then it's either maybe a good time to say yes, or if, or if it's not a good time, then they can learn how to say a wise no and and say it with confidence because they're sure that they've gone through this process.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, it's just it says, this helps me become who God made me to be.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Can you check that as a as a yes, it does?
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Um, I have enough time for this commitment.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: This opportunity helps me grow.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I'm choosing it for the right reasons.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: It won't distract me from my priorities.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: That's a big one.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Or I will be thankful I said yes a week, a month, or when the opportunity is happening.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: I think that's a big one too, because sometimes we don't think through when it's further out, like, oh, we say yes, and then all of a sudden all these things have piled up.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: And we're like, oh my goodness, what am I gonna do?
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: I already said yes, I can't get out of it.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so thinking, learning how to think out further is important to you.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And so, and then yeah, and then that leads us to okay, if you can't really check yes on these boxes, then how do you say no?
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: And and how do you do that in a healthy way?
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: And how do you like be okay just going no?
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Or if people are pressuring you, you know, like they're pressing you to say yes, like you can just say, nope, that's not for me, or I'm choosing something else, or it's not the right opportunity, or you can even say, I don't feel comfortable doing that, yeah, and that's okay.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Giving you we're we're teaching and training our kids how to respond to these decisions and um every yes is a no to something, you know, and we we hear that all the time.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: But you know, when you your kids get busier and busier, because that's kind of the season we're in right now, like we're genuinely helping our kids have to process this for themselves, and we want to raise them in such a way that they can make these decisions.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: We don't want to just make the decisions for them, right?
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Because that's a whole nother can of worms.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Either your kids are gonna resent you um because you've made them do this, or they're they're just gonna be so overwhelmed because they don't they don't fully understand like what saying yes to X, Y, and Z can bring.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: And then you're having to walk them off a ledge of like, hey, right, you committed to this stuff.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: We're gonna see it through.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Um what what's your phrase about quitting?
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Well, it's a part of our core values that um the landies we never quit.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: The N and Landy's never quit until God tells you to.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: We added that part later because we did realize that um while we want to teach our kids, our family, to not just quit when things get hard.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but there are times when God is asking us to step away or he's asking us to say no to something.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: It's so good.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: So I that's one of my favorite parts of this.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: And then you have the devotional uh guide that uh pack your heart six weeks um to go through with your kids.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Super simple, easy.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and then the bingo is super fun.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I was asking my kids uh yesterday.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I was like, Do you know the names of any cafeteria workers?
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: They were like, No.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I said, Well, you gotta put that on your bingo card and and get to know people.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: And then they were going through it and they were naming names of uh like some of the police officers on campus.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: They were like, Oh, Mr.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: So-and-so, blah, blah, blah.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: And uh, and so they were already trying to get ahead of this.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: But I love it.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Super fun to to challenge our kids just to be aware of who's around them.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Notice people.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just to notice people, um, and and know their name.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Like that that's one of the things that even at church, we've got so many staff, and we have, you know, custodial staff.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: We have uh I try to make sure I know everybody's name and say hi to them and and talk to them no matter if this is the senior pastor all the way to you know, volunteer greeter.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Like it's it's powerful to see people and know people and and call them by name.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: And it matters, um or it builds confidence in our kids, especially with adults, like as they're going through it.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: I know my fourth grader, if he can ask the questions and not be shy or like be confident in in getting to know people, the librarian or you know, not just the easy ones that are teachers he sees every day, but to to go into the main office and ask and get to know other adults, like it's just gonna make him more confident in himself and and stretch him to like I have to shake my make eye contact, shake hands with someone.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: And anyways, that's that's a lost art, I think a lot of a lot of kids.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, and our you know, now that our world is so um digital too, yeah.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: It's it's I I feel like I I love things like this that you know, really like you're saying, they encourage face-to-face communication because I mean maybe not elementary kids, but like once they get up into the older grades, now I know that they're putting more safeguards around not having phones in classrooms and stuff like that.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: So I I heard that kids are talking more or whatever.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: And but outside of that, like it's kids can get on and they can just like talk and they think like I've had a connection with somebody, which I mean, maybe you haven't a bit, you know, but like I just I just love the like we're always trying to encourage face-to-face, meeting new people, and like you said, building confidence.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And I I always think back to when um our son, he's 16 now, but when he was little, we would go to a playground and he has never met a stranger.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Like he would walk up to everybody.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: So he like this wasn't his problem, but he wouldn't learn their names.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: And so he'd play with kids, which I think is normal for kids.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: You know, he would play with them and he he didn't he didn't have to learn their names, but I'd be like, Well, what was their name?
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: It was the guy with the blue shirt.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know, it was the guy with the red shirt, you know.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, okay, like let's not just describe their clothing, let's learn their names.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: So encouraging them.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: That's super fun.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: So the back to school guide is out.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Where can they get access to it?
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Right on our website, empoweredhomes.org.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: It's actually a featured resource um right now.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And and when this drops, it'll be a featured resource.

- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Go to that search bar and search up those resources, and you'll you'll find free resources that will help you.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: So super fun.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Um, thanks for all your hard work putting this together.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, it's gonna bless a lot of families.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Well, also uh we've got this posted up on social media, so Instagram and Facebook, uh Empowered Homes Resources.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: You can just search it and uh love for you to follow that as well.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: So follow Bobby's gamer tag and follow Empowered Homes also on social media.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: As soon as school starts, I will probably never play uh what's it called?
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Rocket League again.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Although I I I must admit, I've got really good at it this year.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: So I can do aerials, which I didn't, I just learned what that was.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: You know what that is?
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: You know what an aerial is?
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: I'm too old now, too old.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: So aerials you fly through the air, whatever.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: It's dumb.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's our resource highlight.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: We want to end today's episode with a new segment, brand new.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: We've never done this before.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: And we probably won't do this every week because we'll run out of stuff.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Well, but uh you know, if you if we want people to tell us what they personally want people to to like get on Instagram and tell us uh what you have experienced in this segment.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: So this segment is called Things You Never Thought You Say as a Parent.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Things You Never Thought You Say As a Parent.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: I've got a couple just from the summer.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Uh I'll start with one and then I'll kick it over to you.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Um, this this was a phrase that I caught myself saying a lot, and I was like, in what world did I think that this would be a phrase in my house?
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: And it is who didn't flush?
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Who went to the bathroom and who didn't flush?
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Like that that I would have to like announce that in my home.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Who didn't flush, and then uh make them come flush the toilet.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Well, we have one of those, and we know who it is.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: I won't say because I don't want to embarrass them, but um, we have one of those as well.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: Is it your husband?
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Well, no, it's not, it's not.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: I'm glad.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: So who didn't flush was one of mine.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: I've got I've got two more.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So you got one?
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, I have one.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, it was not this summer.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: This has been a while since I've had to say it, but when I had to say it, I literally like said it, and then I was like, What?
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: Like, why?
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: Why am I having to say this?
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: So um, we went through a period where someone was showing up in their underwear every day to dinner at the dinner table.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: And um where we live, like I don't have curtains on the front windows, so they're just showing up in their underwear, and there's people driving by, walking by, they can see in.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: And finally, three people showed up to the table in their underwear, to which, and I was not one of them, just to be clear.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: And to which I had to say, You are not allowed to show up to the dinner table in your underwear any longer.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: And then I was like, I cannot believe that I have to tell you people.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: And I don't know, maybe this is normal.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Do people just come to dinner in their underwear?
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Do they I mean I know people walk around in their own homes in their underwear, fine, whatever, but we're not big underwear people.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: I mean so that's a that's a phrase that I don't know if many people are having us things I never thought I'd say as a parent.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: You can't come to dinner in underwear.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, you have to have other clothes on besides just the underwear.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Now, when I'm retired and old, yeah, I'll probably do it.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: That'll be a phrase that we say.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: But right now, that's a that's a unique one.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: But all three.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: I was like, what is happening?
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Did they like come together and huddle up and be like, No, look, this is what we're gonna do now?
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: No, it was just like they just did it.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Well, and and before that, I would make our teenager put on a shirt.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Like he would come without a shirt on, and I was like, no, we're gonna wear a shirt, you know.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: And then I don't know.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Just got loose.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Then then they just started showing up in their underwear.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: So so this doesn't happen anymore, right?
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: No, it has not happened again.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, good.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: We just stopped eating dinner at the dinner table.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: No, I'm just kidding.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: We just we eat by the TV.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: I'm kidding.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: We do.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: All right, here's one that happened this summer.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Uh phrase I never thought I'd say as a parent.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Why is your iPad sticky?
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: It's kind of gross.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: I remember grabbing it because I needed to update something.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Like, can you download this new game?
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: Blah blah blah blah blah.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, hand it to me.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: And I like go to swipe.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: I was like, why is this sticky?
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: I had to like take the case off and clean it.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: And it was gross.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, I still don't know what it was.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Fruit snacks.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: I'm I don't know.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: No idea what was on it.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: Something that they ate and licked their fingers and wiped all over it.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: So that was one.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: And then the last one, um, he's going to hate me.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Um, but he's in fourth grade.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: And he probably will think it's funny.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Um, because he does think it's funny.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: But several times this summer, the phrase that we have had to say um to my youngest son is stop showing people your butt.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: He would just pull his pants, moon people.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Mostly in our house, but every once in a while we caught him doing it to like his grandma.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: Oh I'm like, bro, it's a grandma.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: That's hilarious.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: Showing people your hiny.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: So that was a a fun one in the summer.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and I don't know how to get him to stop it, but he thinks it's hilarious.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: So, anywho, that's our segment.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, things you never thought you'd say as a parent.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: If you have something funny that you have said and caught yourself going, gosh, I can't believe I said that.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Please share with us so we can share uh next time we do this segment.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: But that's all I got for today.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Meg, you got anything else?
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: That's it.
