- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff, let's start with Jonathan Cooper. He was in court
- 0:05Speaker 1: earlier Monday morning, Douglas County Courtroom. What's all the latest
- 0:09Speaker 1: on what's going on with Jonathan Cooper in his weekend
- 0:12Speaker 1: missing Well, I mean just the.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Mostly a procedural, you know, next step a plea hearing,
- 0:21Speaker 2: pled not guilty as you would expect, and then basically
- 0:25Speaker 2: they searched the docket for dates the judge thinks will
- 0:30Speaker 2: work for the next stages, that there'll be some kind
- 0:32Speaker 2: of motions hearing soon where if attorneys for either side
- 0:39Speaker 2: have some things they want to present that the judge
- 0:42Speaker 2: should consider or you know, to get removed or put in,
- 0:46Speaker 2: whatever it is, and then a trial date. In late July,
- 0:52Speaker 2: Cooper's legal team asked for a trial date as quickly
- 0:55Speaker 2: as possible because of training camp, and the judge's first
- 0:59Speaker 2: open day was just before training camp's going to open.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So if it's a one or two day trial, if
- 1:07Speaker 2: it goes to trial, then then that's when it would happen.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Jeff, this is a situation and there were multiple charges
- 1:15Speaker 1: brought against multiple parties in all of this. In such
- 1:19Speaker 1: a situation, is this thing sure to get to that trial?
- 1:23Speaker 1: In July or could charges still be dropped?
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I think all around.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I mean it is, you know, it's obviously notre getting
- 1:31Speaker 2: notoriety because of who he is. But in the legal picture,
- 1:37Speaker 2: you know, it's it's a domestic confrontation with two very
- 1:43Speaker 2: differing stories, and you know, I'm sure each person involved
- 1:48Speaker 2: is going to have a different approach maybe to how
- 1:50Speaker 2: this goes. But yeah, I mean it's it's always possible
- 1:56Speaker 2: something like this doesn't go to trial if it didn't
- 1:58Speaker 2: include a notable person. You know a lot of times.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know, it's been decades, but when I was on
- 2:09Speaker 2: the police beat in Chicago long ago, these were the
- 2:12Speaker 2: types of things that got that didn't see a jury trial,
- 2:16Speaker 2: as it were. But you know, I can't say how
- 2:18Speaker 2: this this one will go, all.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Right, Jeff, Week two of the off season program, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 4: ta is whatever you want to call it.
- 2:26Speaker 3: What are we expecting from this week? What? What? What?
- 2:30Speaker 4: Possibly would you go out there and watch off of
- 2:32Speaker 4: building off of last week's momentum?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Well, you know, Andy, I watch everything.
- 2:37Speaker 4: No, I know, people don't know you're watching.
- 2:42Speaker 1: On Thursday, I was standing in front of Jeff like
- 2:45Speaker 1: wald nice, and I felt terrible about that mostly because
- 2:50Speaker 1: I need Jeff to come on my show and tell
- 2:51Speaker 1: me everything that happened, so I can't be blocking him,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and then and then I don't know what's going on,
- 2:57Speaker 1: and then our listeners don't know what's going on.
- 3:00Speaker 5: It was extremely rude to me, and I apologize.
- 3:01Speaker 4: So I'm just going to tell you right now, you
- 3:03Speaker 4: you can have a high opinion of yourself.
- 3:04Speaker 3: If Legwall doesn't want to be blocked, he won't be blocked.
- 3:07Speaker 3: In fact that you were in the way meant he
- 3:09Speaker 3: allowed you to be in the way.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That's that's a good point because when I turned to
- 3:13Speaker 1: Jeff and I was like, sorry, Jeff, up in your way,
- 3:14Speaker 1: he was just like I didn't even notice.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he was up to something. Is what
- 3:19Speaker 3: that means. I deferred.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I deferred kindly, he did. I deferred the prime real
- 3:23Speaker 2: estate very kindly because I was in I had my
- 3:27Speaker 2: angles covered. That was all good.
- 3:29Speaker 5: He was good to go.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He didn't need to see whatever crap I was looking at.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I promise you that.
- 3:33Speaker 2: It is interesting though, that a lot of teams sort
- 3:37Speaker 2: of going incremental, you know, one OTA, then they ramp
- 3:40Speaker 2: up slightly for the next OTA set, and then a little.
- 3:44Speaker 3: More for Mini Camp.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Sean Payton has gone out of his way to sort
- 3:48Speaker 2: of say all three are going to look the same roughly,
- 3:51Speaker 2: just with time spent in meetings, uh, and time spent
- 3:55Speaker 2: on the field can be slightly more during the mini
- 3:58Speaker 2: camp next week. So I think that's a factor of
- 4:04Speaker 2: how he constructs the offseason as a whole. They stay
- 4:07Speaker 2: in the phase one with in the CBA, Phase one
- 4:11Speaker 2: is listed as conditioning only, and they stay in that
- 4:16Speaker 2: longer than any other team. There are some teams that
- 4:19Speaker 2: have already I think two teams have already done them
- 4:21Speaker 2: any camp, including the Steelers, I believe.
- 4:25Speaker 3: But you know, he likes this.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Construction of the offseason, so honestly, I think the two
- 4:33Speaker 2: sets of OTAs in the mini camp will look very
- 4:35Speaker 2: similar because that's the way he likes it.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah, at that point, Jeff, and that's that's how he's
- 4:39Speaker 1: handled the conditioning side of things. We have certainly seen
- 4:42Speaker 1: that given that he has a team that played in
- 4:46Speaker 1: the AFC Championship, so they played deeper than almost everybody else.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And then oh, by the way, there's like almost like
- 4:51Speaker 1: no roster turnover on this team. How has all of
- 4:56Speaker 1: that informed his approach in terms of the football preparation,
- 5:01Speaker 1: install and everything else, not just the conditioning side of things.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I don't I don't think they feel very compelled to
- 5:08Speaker 2: do a whole lot of you know, furious install right now.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I think they are more getting the young guys up
- 5:16Speaker 2: to speed so they can practice the way they want
- 5:18Speaker 2: to practice. I can say this, this will be my
- 5:22Speaker 2: fortieth full season doing this as a beat writer. I
- 5:26Speaker 2: have not in the free agent even though it includes this,
- 5:30Speaker 2: really dates me before free agency. This this is like
- 5:35Speaker 2: a team that would come to camp before free agency.
- 5:39Speaker 2: This is this is how it looked back in the day,
- 5:42Speaker 2: and so it's intriguing to me. I've never seen this
- 5:46Speaker 2: in any team I've covered in the free agency era.
- 5:49Speaker 2: So I am intrigued to see how it all plays out,
- 5:52Speaker 2: because you know, it was a very concerted effort and
- 5:55Speaker 2: it's very rare. And when you look at them in
- 5:59Speaker 2: the big picture, it's kind of you know, they're positioned
- 6:06Speaker 2: better than most other a Timmy, they're thirty first in
- 6:09Speaker 2: dead money. Only the Seahawks have less, So you're talking
- 6:14Speaker 2: to the final four teams from last year or near
- 6:17Speaker 2: the bottom in terms of least dead money. And they
- 6:22Speaker 2: have salary cap space, so and oh yeah, they have
- 6:25Speaker 2: a mountain of cash no one else has. So life
- 6:29Speaker 2: is pretty good on the part of the team. We
- 6:32Speaker 2: don't really tell, you know, the financial side, that's behind
- 6:35Speaker 2: the scenes. But and there's a you know, gleaming palace
- 6:39Speaker 2: that's going to be open by the time they all
- 6:41Speaker 2: come back for training camps. So it is an interesting
- 6:46Speaker 2: place where they've put themselves. And if they're healthy, you know,
- 6:50Speaker 2: I know Vegas doesn't agree, but if they're healthy, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'll be interested to see how all this plays out
- 6:55Speaker 2: when September rolls wrong?
- 6:57Speaker 3: All right, Jeff Miles Garrett, he gets traded last week.
- 7:01Speaker 4: You know, it feels like Rams are back into We
- 7:04Speaker 4: won't worry about the future when the future arrives.
- 7:06Speaker 2: We're going to.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Build for this right now. And you mentioned Vegas right
- 7:10Speaker 4: there in the odds. I know, I think I heard
- 7:13Speaker 4: Dan Tanner saying that all of a sudden in a
- 7:15Speaker 4: lot of places that the Rams have leave brogged everybody
- 7:18Speaker 4: to be the favorite.
- 7:20Speaker 3: How do you.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Break this out as far as the top five or
- 7:23Speaker 4: six contenders? You and I how about I put it
- 7:25Speaker 4: this way to give you better of a map of
- 7:27Speaker 4: what I'm looking for here. You used to tell me
- 7:29Speaker 4: all the time when we were talking Broncos, when Maning
- 7:31Speaker 4: was here, you got one of the four guys. Therefore,
- 7:33Speaker 4: you're always going to be in one of those final
- 7:35Speaker 4: four conversations. With all the stuff that's going on in
- 7:38Speaker 4: the off season, Lugarius Sneen signs a one year deal
- 7:40Speaker 4: to stay at the Chiefs this week and all that,
- 7:42Speaker 4: where do you think the Broncos are because Vegas? What
- 7:45Speaker 4: is Vegas pushed them down six or seven something like that?
- 7:47Speaker 4: Where where do you think the Broncos are as far as.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Twenty to one to win the Super Bowl right now?
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 7:52Speaker 5: They're not. They're not high at all.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Well, and I think you know, the Knicks component for
- 7:57Speaker 2: the betting world can't be underestimated. To me, that's that's
- 8:00Speaker 2: just you know, I think already you know he would
- 8:04Speaker 2: not be because he's young a and in that part
- 8:08Speaker 2: of developmental part of his career. You know, where does
- 8:11Speaker 2: he fit on the tier of quarterbacks. The Broncos love him,
- 8:15Speaker 2: and but I'm not sure you know that level of
- 8:19Speaker 2: love would translate to betters or fans of other teams.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I think the I think the Broncos are sort of
- 8:27Speaker 2: that body of work team, you know, really good defense,
- 8:32Speaker 2: a coach highly respected, you know, and you know they've
- 8:37Speaker 2: won twenty four games in the last two years, so
- 8:39Speaker 2: that puts you in a different tier from most teams.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But I'm not sure the Rams going to or Garrett
- 8:48Speaker 2: going to the Rams impacts sort of the whole pecking order.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I think people thought highly of the Rams before they
- 8:54Speaker 2: even made that deal. So I think the Broncos, for
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, the league when I talk to people, have
- 9:02Speaker 2: the sort of same status, and it's the things we've
- 9:05Speaker 2: all talked about. You know, they're a team constructed, they
- 9:09Speaker 2: got to stay healthy, Wattle's going to have to be
- 9:13Speaker 2: really good, and the defense is going to have to
- 9:16Speaker 2: be on a level near of the last two years.
- 9:20Speaker 2: And then I think they're in the conversation.
- 9:22Speaker 1: What do you think is the next step that Sean
- 9:24Speaker 1: is looking for from bow Knicks and how does the
- 9:28Speaker 1: offseason injury impact his ability to get there?
- 9:32Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know, any lower body injuries you're
- 9:36Speaker 2: throwing platform. Yeah, and what's the big thing they've tried
- 9:40Speaker 2: to address in both play call and and personnel is
- 9:47Speaker 2: you know, start with twenty yards plus down the field.
- 9:50Speaker 2: It's been a disaster.
- 9:51Speaker 3: You know, he.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Thirty eight percent completion rate, and you know, I always
- 9:58Speaker 2: say you're if you're a high value passing team and
- 10:03Speaker 2: your low efficiency, that's a bad combo and the Broncos.
- 10:08Speaker 2: You know, Nicks led the league in attempts, and the
- 10:11Speaker 2: Broncos were third in the league in pass attempts of
- 10:16Speaker 2: twenty yards or more and they were only completing thirty
- 10:20Speaker 2: eight percent of those. So your high volume, low efficiency,
- 10:25Speaker 2: and I don't think they will really challenge at defenses
- 10:29Speaker 2: and get the kind of looks they want in the
- 10:31Speaker 2: run game until that's repaired. You have to force defenses
- 10:36Speaker 2: to do. You have to punish them for their decisions
- 10:40Speaker 2: against you. And the last two years the Broncos have
- 10:43Speaker 2: not punished defenses enough for the decisions they've made. They've
- 10:48Speaker 2: been carried by their own defense keeping them around in games.
- 10:53Speaker 2: So Bo could be really good at what he's best
- 10:56Speaker 2: at early in his career, and that's those late moments,
- 11:00Speaker 2: fourth quarter drives, when the menu gets shorter and he
- 11:04Speaker 2: can work at the pace he wants to work at.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Is the hope that and Jeff, the hope is is
- 11:11Speaker 1: that Bonnicks becomes better at completing intermediate throws. Obviously, is
- 11:16Speaker 1: it possible that Jalen Wattle can be a little bit
- 11:18Speaker 1: of a workaround for that, that the Broncos can still
- 11:22Speaker 1: find those kind of chunks of yardage without necessarily being
- 11:26Speaker 1: able to complete those kind of throws just because of
- 11:28Speaker 1: Wattle's catch and run threat.
- 11:31Speaker 2: What he gives them they don't what they don't have
- 11:33Speaker 2: is and I was talking about this with Andy the
- 11:35Speaker 2: other day, is what he gives them is he wins
- 11:39Speaker 2: on the release. Yeah, and they have guys that win
- 11:42Speaker 2: on the release, but as the play develops, the defender
- 11:46Speaker 2: makes up ground on the current Broncos. When Sutton wins
- 11:51Speaker 2: on the release, or Pat Bryant wins on the release,
- 11:55Speaker 2: Evan Ingram wins on the release, they win. But if
- 11:59Speaker 2: the ball's not out right, then the defender closes ground.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Wattle wins on the release and he maintains the margin
- 12:07Speaker 2: of victory longer in the play. So that gives you
- 12:10Speaker 2: an option or the opportunity to create something. Uh. And
- 12:16Speaker 2: they've they were they've been hoping Troy Franklin could be that,
- 12:19Speaker 2: but he's been much better down the field than he
- 12:21Speaker 2: has in the intermediate zone. And some of that is
- 12:24Speaker 2: just because you got to be physical and feisty in there,
- 12:28Speaker 2: and and Wattle is those things, uh, and that's what
- 12:32Speaker 2: he gives them. He I mean, you can only you
- 12:36Speaker 2: only have to watch like two routes and OTAs last
- 12:38Speaker 2: week to see he's gonna win on the release virtually
- 12:41Speaker 2: against anyone. But it's that he maintains that, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 2: margin of victory as it were, to get to get
- 12:49Speaker 2: the play all.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Right, Jeff. See that's interesting because.
- 12:56Speaker 4: What what one position could benefit then the most, obviously
- 13:00Speaker 4: the receivers. There's an answer I'm trying to get out
- 13:03Speaker 4: of him. I feel like I feel like a prosecutor
- 13:05Speaker 4: right now. Well, wat'll open up Evan Ingram.
- 13:08Speaker 2: He should. I mean, he's gonna he's gonna dig a
- 13:11Speaker 2: defender out somewhere. You're gonna have to help if he
- 13:16Speaker 2: is everything they hope he is, and there's no reason
- 13:18Speaker 2: to think he's not. I think I think he had
- 13:21Speaker 2: the big drop in production in Miami because of other
- 13:25Speaker 2: things in the offense. I don't think suddenly he was
- 13:28Speaker 2: forty receptions worse you know than he was. I think
- 13:32Speaker 2: they had other issues going. But he he forces everything
- 13:37Speaker 2: to be different. You know, you can't look out teams
- 13:40Speaker 2: down the stretch the last four games, including the playoffs.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Look how they play Sutton. He's just getting all the
- 13:46Speaker 2: help all the time, you know. And when Ingram wins
- 13:49Speaker 2: in the middle of the field, they can run him
- 13:51Speaker 2: down before the ball's out. So all those things are benefited.
- 13:57Speaker 2: If a guy can create space somewhere, force force issues,
- 14:02Speaker 2: you know, force response, and if you're an offense that
- 14:06Speaker 2: can force a response that you can predict, that's the
- 14:10Speaker 2: best thing for an offense. If you can say we
- 14:14Speaker 2: do this, they're going to do that, then suddenly you've
- 14:17Speaker 2: got a lot more things that work that you didn't
- 14:21Speaker 2: have before.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Jeff, you've covered this league a long time, as you said,
- 14:24Speaker 4: going into your forty here. Now I have been around
- 14:28Speaker 4: a long time as well. Never have I heard three
- 14:30Speaker 4: hosts and a beat writer laud the exploits of a punter.
- 14:35Speaker 4: But aside from you and a crakman, Vick Lombardi had
- 14:38Speaker 4: to jump on that thing too. Should I read into
- 14:42Speaker 4: the cross Shawn missiles that are being launched, because we
- 14:44Speaker 4: don't really want to see a lot of those, Jeff,
- 14:46Speaker 4: I mean.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Oh, he launched them last year. It's just you just
- 14:50Speaker 2: didn't know when the very non missile was going to
- 14:54Speaker 2: show up.
- 14:54Speaker 5: It did from time to time.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, the scud.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Yeah, or the Christmas lights shot is the you know,
- 15:04Speaker 2: the roof shot is as Sean would call it. But yeah,
- 15:08Speaker 2: you know, just a consistency factor is what you're looking
- 15:11Speaker 2: for in a punter. I I still do, you know.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I was taught scouting the old way, you know, by
- 15:18Speaker 2: by many, including my man the Late Sea a Verocado.
- 15:21Speaker 2: But I do sometimes still with kickers and punters do
- 15:25Speaker 2: the look away because a sound is worthy of paying
- 15:30Speaker 2: attention to. And when he hits it right, that's that's
- 15:34Speaker 2: uh not many guys can create that kind of that
- 15:38Speaker 2: kind of impact, you know. And again we're talking about
- 15:40Speaker 2: a punter, and I know that's not rocking the confetti
- 15:43Speaker 2: cannons or anything, but when he does get a hold
- 15:46Speaker 2: of one, it is a BP shot that's worthy of watching.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Jeff I said to a friend of ours, this is
- 15:52Speaker 1: the second most impressive punting display I've ever.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Seen out here.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Trailing only routed up Todd Sauerbrunt that that was how
- 16:02Speaker 1: it could cross all Look.
- 16:03Speaker 5: The other day, I.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Tell you my benchmark for pure sound and fury of
- 16:09Speaker 2: a kicker is Mason Crosby at the Senior Bowl. I
- 16:14Speaker 2: really thought he was gonna dent the bleachers. And I'm
- 16:16Speaker 2: not exaggerated.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Hell yeah it was.
- 16:19Speaker 2: You could look down, uh and you just knew it
- 16:23Speaker 2: was just it was unbelievable.
- 16:25Speaker 3: But yeah, that's that's always.
- 16:27Speaker 2: My my pinnacle benchmark for the sound and fury when
- 16:31Speaker 2: I'm when I'm doing the audio scouting. But he was,
- 16:35Speaker 2: he was thumping.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Yeah, it was. It was pretty good to watch. Yeah,
- 16:40Speaker 5: it was.
- 16:40Speaker 1: It was some gen Carlos Stanton crack of the bad
- 16:43Speaker 1: kind of stuff that we were getting. And and by
- 16:45Speaker 1: the way, and I mean he was pinning him on
- 16:47Speaker 1: the sidelines too. It was it wasn't just what he
- 16:49Speaker 1: was doing in terms of hang time and everything else.
- 16:52Speaker 1: It was a really impressive display.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Uh.
- 16:56Speaker 5: Pro this year, Jeffy. He really looks like he could
- 16:58Speaker 5: play the part in that.
- 17:00Speaker 2: No, this is I mean, you know again, I know
- 17:02Speaker 2: we're talking about a punter and people are like, what
- 17:04Speaker 2: what the hell are you guys talking about? No, I
- 17:07Speaker 2: mean that's what I'm saying. In the developmental world, this
- 17:10Speaker 2: is how it works. You know, when it's working and
- 17:14Speaker 2: your scouts are working. You get Nick Benito out of
- 17:18Speaker 2: a one point five snap in a you know, sack year.
- 17:21Speaker 2: In this rookie year, you get this young guy who
- 17:25Speaker 2: who look. I watched his tape in college and and
- 17:28Speaker 2: it was you know, he was hitting three hundred at best,
- 17:32Speaker 2: maybe with with quality shots, but when you saw the
- 17:35Speaker 2: quality ones. Yeah, the ability to project that forward is
- 17:40Speaker 2: what scouting is. And if he if he really is
- 17:44Speaker 2: this spot in his development after you know, just over
- 17:49Speaker 2: a year in the NFL, that's that's uh, that's pretty
- 17:52Speaker 2: good developmental curve.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Well, and guys tack on this part of the conversation,
- 17:57Speaker 1: and again, I know we're talking about a punter, but
- 18:00Speaker 1: this Broncos team in twenty twenty six, Jalen Wattle, no,
- 18:04Speaker 1: Jalen Waddle, this is not going to turn into a
- 18:06Speaker 1: thirty three point a game offense or anything else like that.
- 18:09Speaker 1: This team is gonna win defensively, and they're gonna win
- 18:12Speaker 1: by playing good field position football and winning on the margins.
- 18:16Speaker 1: It's I think it's gonna look very similar to how
- 18:18Speaker 1: it did last year, and a punter like that is
