- 0:00The oldest of Native Hawaiian chants describe the Hawaiian
- 0:04Islands, the spirits that inhabit them, the forces of
- 0:09nature that shaped them, and all the living things upon them as
- 0:14inextricably connected. And perhaps the wisdom of the
- 0:19native peoples is true and not just folklore.
- 0:25When authorities are called to a residence for an incident, what
- 0:29they will see will shake them all to their core.
- 0:32A supposed entity with an insatiable hunger for blood and
- 0:37corpses makes its presence known.
- 0:41Are the infamous tales true? This is what we will discover as
- 0:46we dive into the untold story of the haunted Kasha House of
- 0:51Kaimuki located in Hawaii. Beyond the waters of its beaches
- 1:11and the lush green canopies of its forests, the tropical
- 1:16paradise of the islands of Hawaii are an idyllic home or
- 1:21getaway for many. However, within the mists,
- 1:26shadows permeate, and where the veil is thin between our world
- 1:31and the next, those shadows sometimes whisper.
- 1:37In Japanese folklore, the creature known as the Kasha
- 1:41ain't a terrifying picture. Its name translates to Fire
- 1:46Cart. It is a creature that is known
- 1:49to frequent populated areas and where its diet consists of
- 1:54consuming the flesh of fresh human corpses.
- 1:59According to the lore, these creatures are a type of baki
- 2:03Neko or a type of hellcat that lives among human beings under
- 2:08the guise of a common house cat or a stray.
- 2:13They are bipedal and larger than most people.
- 2:17When they make themselves known, they are accompanied by the
- 2:21flames of hell and strong thunderstorms are left in their
- 2:27wake. It is only during funerals that
- 2:30their true forms are revealed, and as a result, they are known
- 2:35to snatch the corpses of the freshly deceased and spirit them
- 2:40away to hell for punishment. A type of Grim Reaper, if you
- 2:45will. Akasha will animate a corpse as
- 2:49a puppet to do its bidding, and then we'll consume it as the
- 2:54ultimate punishment for one's misdeeds in life.
- 2:59Our story begins around 1940 on Oahu in Hawaii, in a large house
- 3:06that stands at 8th and Harding in Kaimuki, its foundation
- 3:12resting atop 2 beds of lava rock.
- 3:16The original story that began the infamy of the Kaimuki house
- 3:21tells of a young couple who moved into the home hoping for a
- 3:25good and beautiful life together.
- 3:29But almost as soon as they moved in, this shared dream would
- 3:34deteriorate. The neighbors began hearing loud
- 3:38bangs and crashes almost every night, and as the episodes grew
- 3:44in intensity and suspecting that perhaps domestic violence could
- 3:49be taking place, one of the neighbors called the police.
- 3:55When the police arrived and questioned the couple, instead
- 3:58of seeing one or the other upset or abused, they told them
- 4:03something else instead. They began to divulge to the
- 4:07officers that they were being attacked by something that they
- 4:11couldn't see. What happened to the young
- 4:14couple following this particular night is unclear, but what is
- 4:18known is that they moved out a short while after the incident
- 4:23sometime later, on August 13th, 1942.
- 4:28On this day, an article would appear in the Honolulu Star
- 4:32Bulletin newspaper, one that described a bizarre happening
- 4:37that had just taken place, and this incident was supposedly
- 4:42caused by the evil doings of kahuna.
- 4:47For further context, in ancient Hawaii, treatment of the sick
- 4:53was based on the belief that poor health was caused by
- 4:56malevolent spirits or disease producing demons.
- 5:01Illness was considered the result of sorcery or, in some
- 5:05cases, the ramifications of one's actions.
- 5:10Among the Hawaiians, there existed a group, the kahunas, or
- 5:16those who were keepers of the secret, whose wisdom had been
- 5:21gained by divine guidance. Kahunas were grouped into
- 5:26various categories, some good and others bad, and sorcery was
- 5:32practiced by the group. It was known as the Kahuna
- 5:36Anani. So essentially kahuna is a form
- 5:39of witchcraft with both white and black magic.
- 5:44On the 9th the article referred to, police officers were called
- 5:48to a house by a woman during a strong thunderstorm.
- 5:53During the call, the lady kept repeating she's trying to kill
- 5:58my children over and over again. Her words kept being interrupted
- 6:04by loud crashes of Thunder and what sounded like items being
- 6:09destroyed in the background. Upon arriving and entering the
- 6:14house, the officers couldn't believe what they were seeing.
- 6:19Those present began to witness something that was truly
- 6:23horrific. The woman who had initially
- 6:26called was screaming in the corner of the main room as her
- 6:31three children were levitating before her and everyone.
- 6:38Upon approaching them, the officers as well as the children
- 6:43would be slapped, pushed and hurled across the room by a
- 6:48sinister, invisible force. The children were a brother and
- 6:54two sisters, ages 1018 and 20. The main officer in charge was a
- 7:03police Sergeant. Prior to the call, the family
- 7:07began to smell a very strange odor like that of sulphur
- 7:11permeating their home and then the physical attacks began.
- 7:17As the force attacked that was involved, the mother of the
- 7:20family ran into her room and returned with several items.
- 7:25She frantically began fanning tea leaves and began throwing
- 7:30salt towards the entity. After several minutes, her
- 7:34efforts seemed to work as the children and the officer
- 7:40released from the clutches of whatever this thing was.
- 7:46The family and the officer would vacate the premise following
- 7:50this night of horror. The woman who had called the
- 7:53authorities believed that the happenings were a result of
- 7:57black magic that had been placed on her by her ex-husband whom
- 8:03she had recently left. This is no doubt probably the
- 8:07most famous stories surrounding the Kaimuki house given the
- 8:11press it received in the various media outlets.
- 8:15But it certainly would not be the last. 30 years later,
- 8:20another incident would too garner the attention of the
- 8:23people. Another frantic late night call
- 8:27had dispatched a patrol car in Kaimuki.
- 8:30The girls who lived there had supposedly heard strange noises
- 8:35of someone moving around and talking inside of their house.
- 8:40At first, thinking someone had broken into their home, they
- 8:44phoned the authorities. But following the call, the
- 8:49noises began to escalate in intensity.
- 8:52Then one of the women felt the ice cold grasp of a hand on her
- 8:58arm. The girls, all three, ran out of
- 9:03the home and sat in their car until the officer arrived.
- 9:08Upon hearing their story, he would go inside and check the
- 9:12home for an intruder, but would find no one.
- 9:17Deciding to spend the rest of the night with one of the girl's
- 9:19mothers, they asked the policeman to follow them to the
- 9:23mother's home to ensure their safety.
- 9:28As the girls drove in front of the officer, they began to
- 9:31erratically swerve from side to side, ultimately pulling into a
- 9:36vacant parking lot upon approaching the vehicle with
- 9:41concern. The policeman later wrote this
- 9:44in his report. As I approached the vehicle I
- 9:49could see two of the girls screaming.
- 9:52The girl sat in the middle in the back was fighting a person
- 9:57that could not be seen. She was very clearly being
- 10:01strangled. I opened one of the back doors
- 10:05and reached into the vehicle and to my shock, a big, strong,
- 10:13calloused hand that could not have possibly been that of a
- 10:17teenage girl grabbed my arm and twisted it.
- 10:23Upon freeing myself, I called for backup.
- 10:28The answering officer was certainly prepared for a parking
- 10:31lot fight, but not one with a ghost.
- 10:35Within minutes, the other officer would arrive and with
- 10:39all the color drained out of his face, the original responding
- 10:44officer told him that there was a ghost in that car.
- 10:48By this point, all women involved had exited the car and
- 10:52were hysterical, crying and screaming.
- 10:57Continuing to quote the officer's report, I told the
- 11:00girl who had been choked to get in my patrol car and the other
- 11:04two women to ride with my fellow officer.
- 11:08But as soon as the young lady sat in my vehicle, which had
- 11:11stayed running during the incident, a motor died.
- 11:16It died and wouldn't start up again.
- 11:19Placing the girls back into their original car, the officer
- 11:22tried to start the vehicle again and it started as if nothing had
- 11:28ever been wrong. Wanting to get these frightened
- 11:31girls home safe, the original officer and the responding
- 11:35officer agreed to continue to follow them.
- 11:38But upon pulling out of the parking lot and almost as soon
- 11:42as they had driven about 5 yards, suddenly one of the
- 11:46girl's vehicle's doors flew open and the same girl who had
- 11:52previously been attacked was thrown out of the vehicle.
- 11:57Upon rushing to her position to check on her, she was again
- 12:01tearing at her throat and making noises as if she was being
- 12:05strangled. She had also incurred some Rd.
- 12:09rash. Together, the two policemen were
- 12:13not strong enough to pull her hands away.
- 12:17Terrified, and believing the matter to be a spiritual one,
- 12:21one of the officers ran into the nearby Oasis Cafe and came back
- 12:26with a handful of salt and a glass of water which was
- 12:30spritzed upon everyone there. And as the drops touched the
- 12:34young woman, she finally was able to catch her breath again.
- 12:40In later interviews, the officer would tell the press that his
- 12:44grandmother had told him that this was a method to make ghosts
- 12:48go away. And perhaps his grandmother was
- 12:52right. Given the time frame in which
- 12:55these stories occurred, most involved may no longer be with
- 12:59us, so corroborating details is nearly impossible.
- 13:04But these tales have certainly made the Kaimuki house infamous.
- 13:09Now, there are several possible explanations as to why and how
- 13:13the home became haunted by whatever paranormal entity or
- 13:18entities. Again, details are scarce, but
- 13:22I've done my best to research and put together the most
- 13:25cohesive theories possible. The first theory refers to a
- 13:30father who, after his wife told him that she was going to leave
- 13:35him, decided to do the unthinkable and in the lives of
- 13:40his two children and his wife that still resided in the home.
- 13:46The wife and son's bodies were buried in the backyard, but the
- 13:50corpse of the daughter was never found.
- 13:54The second theory is that of a strange love triangle.
- 13:59A man was dating a woman who was dating another woman in secret
- 14:04without the man knowing, and upon his discovery of his
- 14:08girlfriend's secret affair, he decided to take the lives of
- 14:12her, her girlfriend, and ultimately himself within the
- 14:18walls of the Kaimuki house. The original house, from what I
- 14:23could gather, has since been demolished and another home
- 14:27built atop where it once stood. And one of the many questions I
- 14:31have is this home haunted, just as the original home was?
- 14:38Was the haunting, if it existed at all, the result of vengeful
- 14:42spirits of those who had met their demise there?
- 14:46The result of a bloodthirsty entity known as the Kasha, who
- 14:52would do anything to feed upon the flesh of the freshly
- 14:57deceased? Or was it something else?
- 15:02Was it perhaps the result of Native Hawaiian black magic
- 15:05being practiced on the premises or nearby?
- 15:09Or someone cursing another using this magic?
- 15:13We may never truly have the answers to these probing
- 15:16questions, but one thing is for certain.
- 15:21There was once a place that harbored darkness, a black void
- 15:26that existed in the heart of paradise, the supposed home of
- 15:31the angry souls of the dead, and possibly a creature from a world
- 15:37that is not our own. So if you see something that's
- 15:41beautiful on the surface, just know that one must be cautious
- 15:47because something evil could be lurking just beyond the shadows.
