- 0:10Speaker 1: and Cam in Las Vegas for opening night of college basketball.
- 0:15Speaker 1: The men's college basketball season opens in Las Vegas for
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Longhorns as they take on the Ohio State Buckeys.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Pregame begins at Day thirty, tip off at nine right
- 0:25Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone and on

- 0:32Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian spoke this morning as the Longhorns exit bye
- 0:37Speaker 1: week number two and enter into a week against the
- 0:42Speaker 1: Florida Gators. Now, this Florida team looked very good defensively
- 0:49Speaker 1: against Georgia this past weekend. We'll start here with Steve
- 0:53Speaker 1: Sarkisian's opening remarks to the media.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You know, buys are always nice to get to get healthy,
- 0:58Speaker 2: get refreshed, get richard charged, to kind of yourself analysis.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But it's also nice to get back to work.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You know, we are a you know, routine oriented operation,
- 1:07Speaker 2: so to get back to work. We know the month
- 1:10Speaker 2: of November for US is one that's going to be challenging.
- 1:14Speaker 2: But as we say around here, the games in November
- 1:17Speaker 2: are the ones you remember. So we got to put
- 1:19Speaker 2: in a lot of work and it starts this Saturday
- 1:21Speaker 2: against the University of Florida, a team that is very talented,
- 1:26Speaker 2: really well coached.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I know a lot of people are gonna look at the.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Record and so on and so forth, but you can
- 1:32Speaker 2: just look at their last three games. You know, they
- 1:34Speaker 2: lose an overtime to Tennessee, they win, and they're beating Georgia.
- 1:38Speaker 2: They got a chance to kick a field goal to
- 1:40Speaker 2: go up late in that ball game within kind of
- 1:42Speaker 2: muff a snap. So they've been playing good football. It's
- 1:45Speaker 2: gonna be a heck of a challenge. And so you know,
- 1:47Speaker 2: I think we got off to a good start today
- 1:50Speaker 2: from a preparation standpoint, but we're gonna need a good
- 1:52Speaker 2: week of work to get ourselves ready to go.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And coach Starkeygen talks about that month of November for Texas.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Here is the last four games and Long Horns SEC
- 2:01Speaker 1: regular season schedule, all played in November. Two home games,
- 2:06Speaker 1: two road games, and it does not get easy. It's
- 2:09Speaker 1: versus Florida, a team that held the Bulldogs to thirty
- 2:13Speaker 1: four points on Saturday, going to Arkansas in a rivalry
- 2:18Speaker 1: game against Kentucky now Kentucky is of the four teams
- 2:22Speaker 1: left on the schedule, feels like the easiest that Longhorns
- 2:26Speaker 1: fans can put a w in the win column, and
- 2:29Speaker 1: then going to Kyle Field to take on the Texas
- 2:32Speaker 1: A and M fight fighting atkes on Thanksgiving weekend, the
- 2:35Speaker 1: last game of the season and a game that potentially
- 2:38Speaker 1: could decide the SEC. No pressure though the month of
- 2:43Speaker 1: November for the long Horns. It does not get any
- 2:46Speaker 1: easier from this point on, so yes games to remember now.
- 2:50Speaker 1: The Florida quarterback situation got very dicey over the weekend,
- 2:54Speaker 1: as a DJ Langwey's prognosis after the game did not
- 3:00Speaker 1: looked very good. The prognosis this morning, however, looks much better.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Florta's quarterback suffered what appeared to be a serious non
- 3:09Speaker 1: contact injury against Georgia in Week ten. Gators head coach
- 3:14Speaker 1: Billy Napier said that he could play as soon as
- 3:17Speaker 1: this week, though against Texas Now Langway came out in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the second half on crutches in street clothes, it looked
- 3:24Speaker 1: like the season potentially could be over for Florida with
- 3:28Speaker 1: that injury. However, if he's able to play this weekend,
- 3:33Speaker 1: that would be huge for the Gators and their chance
- 3:35Speaker 1: to win. But the player who stepped in for Langway
- 3:39Speaker 1: was true walk on Adrian Warner, a freshman transfer from Yale. Yeah,
- 3:45Speaker 1: seven of twenty two sixty sixty yards an interception in
- 3:48Speaker 1: the loss, but he looked pretty solid in that recovery.
- 3:53Speaker 1: And then, of course you remember starting quarterback Graham Mertz,
- 3:56Speaker 1: who suffered in acl that ended his collegiate career earlier
- 3:59Speaker 1: this season as well. So the quarterback situation is dicey,
- 4:02Speaker 1: to say the least for for Florida. Steves arccusion was asked,
- 4:07Speaker 1: how do you prepare for the multiple quarterbacks? How do
- 4:09Speaker 1: you prepare to scheme against a quarterback that you might
- 4:13Speaker 1: not know until game time?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Well, I think you prepare for the scheme. You know,
- 4:17Speaker 2: coach Napier has been doing it quite a while. You
- 4:19Speaker 2: know it's time at Lafayette and what he's done at Florida.
- 4:23Speaker 2: So they've got a very intricate scheme, a lot of shifts,
- 4:25Speaker 2: a lot of motions, a lot of formation adjustments that
- 4:28Speaker 2: they that'sy tax you with, you know, so I think
- 4:32Speaker 2: that's the first part.
- 4:33Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Again, they're a little bit of limbo from a quarterback perspective.
- 4:37Speaker 2: But in the end of the day, I think, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: they're gonna run their offense and that's what we got
- 4:40Speaker 2: to prepare for.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And the offense for for Florida this season has done
- 4:45Speaker 1: an okay job of scoring touchdowns. Again in that in
- 4:49Speaker 1: that Georgia game, they looked mediocre in the second half
- 4:55Speaker 1: without their starting a quarterback. Through their last four twenty
- 4:58Speaker 1: four points against UCF and win seventeen and a loss
- 5:01Speaker 1: at Tennessee, a rivalry game. But they put points on
- 5:04Speaker 1: the board against Kentucky and forty eight to twenty win
- 5:07Speaker 1: at home. So this is a team, like I said,
- 5:10Speaker 1: when they get the ball moving, they could potentially score
- 5:14Speaker 1: some points on you. My point has continued to be
- 5:17Speaker 1: though for Longhorn fans who are expecting a high flying
- 5:20Speaker 1: style of offense in this game against Florida, I would
- 5:23Speaker 1: say not so fast. The Florida defense against Georgia played marvelously.
- 5:28Speaker 1: They did a great job against the Bulldogs in preventing
- 5:31Speaker 1: them from getting into their uptap of offense, and they
- 5:34Speaker 1: picked off Carson back twice. I would say that Florida's
- 5:38Speaker 1: defense will be one of the better ones that the
- 5:40Speaker 1: Longhorns have faced so far the season, and they might
- 5:43Speaker 1: be the best defense they face in the month of November. Now,
- 5:46Speaker 1: the Longhorns haven't helped themselves in some situations when it
- 5:50Speaker 1: comes to curbing penalties. You don't want drives to start
- 5:54Speaker 1: further back than they have to, and that you don't
- 5:56Speaker 1: want your drives stalling out due to penalties. So how
- 6:00Speaker 1: does Sarkesian and the coaching staff for Texas going to
- 6:04Speaker 1: curb some of those penalties two.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Weeks in a row, I think there was eighteen penalties
- 6:08Speaker 2: of those two our last two ball games, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 2: some of which you know, we really try to minimize
- 6:14Speaker 2: the pre snap stuff, the stuff, you know, the lining
- 6:16Speaker 2: up off sides, the jumping off sides, and then and
- 6:20Speaker 2: then trying to look at our fundamentals and techniques on
- 6:23Speaker 2: some of the things that happened in play. And I
- 6:25Speaker 2: think we've addressed those things pretty well about you know,
- 6:29Speaker 2: hand placement from the offensive line perspective in the secondary,
- 6:33Speaker 2: getting our head around when we're in phase on the
- 6:35Speaker 2: deep ball.
- 6:37Speaker 3: You know, we've been really good.
- 6:39Speaker 2: As aggressive as we've been of getting after the quarterback,
- 6:42Speaker 2: we've been good about not targeting people and doing those
- 6:44Speaker 2: types of things. So we just got to get back
- 6:46Speaker 2: to our fundamentals, are our beliefs and how we go
- 6:49Speaker 2: about our business, and I think will be okay.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It's interesting that he talks about the offensive line. The
- 6:53Speaker 1: line so far for Texas has done a good job
- 6:55Speaker 1: of opening up holes the Texas running back room before
- 7:00Speaker 1: where the season was one of those specialty positions that
- 7:04Speaker 1: many across the country thought of as the best in
- 7:07Speaker 1: the SEC. They thought the running back room for Texas
- 7:10Speaker 1: could be the thing that really gets the ball rolling. Instead,
- 7:13Speaker 1: due to injuries, it has been a kind of revolving
- 7:16Speaker 1: door of who is going to be the starting running
- 7:18Speaker 1: back and can Jayden Blue play and can he not play?
- 7:20Speaker 1: And what does the reps look like. This has been
- 7:23Speaker 1: a real deal breaker for the Longhorns is the fact
- 7:27Speaker 1: that the offensive line has been so good but still
- 7:30Speaker 1: suffers from some of those holding penalties that stall out drives.
- 7:33Speaker 1: But speaking of targeting, Vernon BroadOn he got a targeting
- 7:37Speaker 1: call against Vanderbilt and now he's gonna have to sit
- 7:39Speaker 1: out the first half of the Florida game this weekend,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and the question was asked, how do you practice like that?
- 7:46Speaker 1: Do you give Broaden normal reps or do you kind
- 7:50Speaker 1: of sit the reps? How do you work that? Sarkisian
- 7:52Speaker 1: had a very I thought insightful answer.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I think about that all the time. I know that,
- 7:56Speaker 2: and You're like, why would you think about it? Because
- 7:58Speaker 2: it stills on your mind. You're like, Okay, how do
- 8:00Speaker 2: you do it? But yeah, Vernon's practicing as normal, you know.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I think it's a great opportunity. Jermaine Lay has really
- 8:06Speaker 2: come on here in the last month of the season,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and so we've been impressed with him. Bill Norton has
- 8:10Speaker 2: stepped up, Alex Januaries continue to step up.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Tia Savella. We're gonna need more out of him.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Like I said, the last two weeks, I think Sadier's
- 8:19Speaker 2: had his best two weeks since he's been here. So
- 8:22Speaker 2: we're gonna need these guys. They're all gonna have to
- 8:24Speaker 2: step up that way. And so again, and Florida is
- 8:28Speaker 2: a really good running football team. That's what they believe in,
- 8:30Speaker 2: and so we got to be able to stop the
- 8:32Speaker 2: run in this game.
- 8:32Speaker 3: We're gonna need all those guys to step up.
- 8:34Speaker 1: It's gonna be big for the offense or correction for
- 8:37Speaker 1: the defense to step up in this game. Now, the
- 8:41Speaker 1: Longhorns have had a lot of players on the defensive
- 8:45Speaker 1: side of the ball do their job well, one of
- 8:48Speaker 1: those being Anthy Hill. But it's not only Hill who
- 8:52Speaker 1: has been stepping up. It's guys like uh Lea Leah
- 8:57Speaker 1: for who has really helped him this season. Sarkisian was
- 9:02Speaker 1: asked about his linebacker duo.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Well, I think there's a level of versatility right to
- 9:06Speaker 2: to what Leonga brings. You know, he can play multiple positions,
- 9:11Speaker 2: He is extremely bright, He communicates well with Anthony.
- 9:15Speaker 3: I think Anthony trusts him that way to go do that.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But on the flip side, I'll say this about David
- 9:21Speaker 2: in the production that David has now maybe with some
- 9:24Speaker 2: limited reps, but when he goes in, his production has
- 9:27Speaker 2: been really high. And so I think it's been a
- 9:29Speaker 2: win on both lends for us. And you know, I
- 9:32Speaker 2: think it's been a good move and it was a
- 9:34Speaker 2: nice adjustment by our defensive staff to do so. And
- 9:37Speaker 2: I think all three of those guys are benefiting from that.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Now, a big thing that this longhornant team benefits from
- 9:43Speaker 1: this week is coming off a buy. Now a lot
- 9:46Speaker 1: of coaches struggle with figuring out how do you mix
- 9:49Speaker 1: in a buy, how do you give your guys some
- 9:51Speaker 1: little bit of time off but at the same time
- 9:54Speaker 1: instilled game plans and keep moving towards the Lsman goal,
- 9:57Speaker 1: which of course is go one to know every week
- 10:00Speaker 1: and then hopefully win an SEC championship and then later
- 10:02Speaker 1: down the road a national championship. But the way that
- 10:05Speaker 1: Sarkesian in this group has regrouped after the bye week
- 10:09Speaker 1: one was looking good. Now bye week number two. The
- 10:13Speaker 1: question becomes, do you do anything different? Are you happy
- 10:16Speaker 1: with the preparation? What is the first or what's the
- 10:19Speaker 1: difference between the first bye week and then now the
- 10:22Speaker 1: second bye week?
- 10:23Speaker 3: For this Longhorned team, not a whole.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Lot changed from a format standpoint. I think naturally the
- 10:29Speaker 2: second bye you hold some guys a little bit more
- 10:33Speaker 2: who just are a little bit more nicked up. You know,
- 10:36Speaker 2: I've been impressed with a lot of our young players.
- 10:38Speaker 2: You know, Kobe Black continues to make strides. I think
- 10:41Speaker 2: Jared Gibson, you know, showed us a lot last week. Again,
- 10:46Speaker 2: you know that both young safeties. You know, Jordan Johnson,
- 10:48Speaker 2: Rebel and Xavier both are kind of on the come.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And so the good part is it's not always just
- 10:54Speaker 2: about on offense and deference. It's finding roles for them
- 10:56Speaker 2: on special teams as well.
- 10:58Speaker 3: And so you know, a lot of those guys have
- 11:01Speaker 3: shown me a lot. I'll say this.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I think Sadir Mitchell the last two weeks has had
- 11:05Speaker 2: his two best weeks of work here in quite some time.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So that stuff's encouraging to me that we've got a
- 11:10Speaker 2: group of players that are continuing to push one another
- 11:12Speaker 2: and push themselves to be the best they can be,
- 11:15Speaker 2: because that's how our team is going to become really good.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And like I said last week, we're not a finished product.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I think our best football still ahead of us. And
- 11:22Speaker 2: we're going to need all these guys. I don't know when,
- 11:25Speaker 2: but we're gonna need them all. So we've got to
- 11:27Speaker 2: keep coaching them to be the best they can be.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Which is important to think about that you don't want
- 11:31Speaker 1: your best game is played in the months of September
- 11:33Speaker 1: and October. You want your best games played in November,
- 11:37Speaker 1: December and then down the road into January. Now there
- 11:41Speaker 1: was updates on the injuries to Isaiah Bond and Andrew
- 11:44Speaker 1: mccubo and how those two players have been kind of
- 11:49Speaker 1: working their way back in after a bye week. Sarkisian
- 11:53Speaker 1: was asked about where mccubo and Bond are.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Both those guys practice today which was really coouraging and
- 12:00Speaker 2: they both, you know, look pretty good.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Again.
- 12:04Speaker 2: It's a Monday of a game week, and and so
- 12:07Speaker 2: how do they respond each day? I think is important
- 12:09Speaker 2: for Drew and and Isaiah, but today was a good start.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And I think for us as a team. You know,
- 12:18Speaker 2: our mojo offensively is one thing I want to get back.
- 12:21Speaker 2: You know, our our our, whether you want to call
- 12:23Speaker 2: it our our sense of urgency, our intent, the way
- 12:27Speaker 2: we go about our business. You know, we've got a
- 12:29Speaker 2: talented group of guys that are very competitive, They're tough,
- 12:31Speaker 2: they work really hard, they want to play well. Sometimes
- 12:36Speaker 2: you can overtry, if that makes sense. And and to me,
- 12:40Speaker 2: that gets back into your mojo, that gets back into
- 12:42Speaker 2: our swagger a little bit, and I want to I
- 12:44Speaker 2: want to try to recreate that with the guys because
- 12:48Speaker 2: I know what we're capable of and if we can
- 12:50Speaker 2: get that clicking to go along with what we're doing
- 12:52Speaker 2: defensively and special teams wise, that would be a huge bonus.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Long Words play this Saturday eleven am at home against
- 12:59Speaker 1: the Florida Gators. That game kicks off at eleven am.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Pregame show network starts at ten. Longhorn Game Day early morning.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Gonna make sure you get your coffee for that one
- 13:10Speaker 1: eight am for Longhorn Game Day with Cameron Parker, Mike Harball,
- 13:15Speaker 1: Harsh and of course the world's strongest man, Mark Henry.
- 13:17Speaker 1: You're not gonna miss out on that. They of course
- 13:19Speaker 1: always bring on the best guests and get you ready
- 13:22Speaker 1: for a Longhorn game Day. That is right. We're gonna
- 13:25Speaker 1: keep the Craig Ways Show rolling as our two continues,
- 13:29Speaker 1: Gonna go over some of the big wins and loses,
- 13:33Speaker 1: big wins and losses over the weekend for NFL teams.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Are the Detroit Lions for real? Are they now the
- 13:40Speaker 1: team to beat in the NFC? And are we expecting
- 13:43Speaker 1: them to match up against the Kandidacy Chiefs in February.
- 13:47Speaker 1: We'll have that next on the Craig Waite Show. Andrews
- 13:49Speaker 1: and Will filling in for Craig Way on Sports Radio
- 13:51Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred at the zone
