- 0:07Speaker 1: All right, splash It Podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 2: It's our third show.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm fp Santangela, washed up has been Giant, current Giant.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Broadcaster Susan Sluster for The Chronicle is a frequent guest
- 0:18Speaker 1: on the show, but today it's all about our special guest.
- 0:21Speaker 1: He's going to join us for the first half of
- 0:22Speaker 1: the show. He is a gold Glove winner and the
- 0:27Speaker 1: Giants a slogan web webby. Thanks for coming on, Mat,
- 0:29Speaker 1: How you doing.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I'm doing good. Thanks for having me.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I mean, tell us about the gold Glove. That's pretty
- 0:34Speaker 1: cool and how that came into fruition and the award itself.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I think it's the coolest trophy in all the baseball
- 0:41Speaker 1: besides the big one that's right there in the clubhouse
- 0:43Speaker 1: when you walk on the right. But talk about winning
- 0:45Speaker 1: the gold.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Glove, Yeah, it was definitely something I you know, I
- 0:50Speaker 2: didn't I wanted to get better on defense.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I didn't necessarily want to.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It wasn't It wasn't like gold Glove or bust, right,
- 0:56Speaker 2: And I think that's Patty's goal. I think now that
- 0:59Speaker 2: he's you know, done it a couple of times, and
- 1:03Speaker 2: but I just wanted to kind of get better at defense.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I felt like, especially holding runners.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I didn't know that was that big of a part
- 1:12Speaker 3: of it, but it was.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And I just wanted to put the team, honestly, in
- 1:17Speaker 2: a better position. I think I was hurting myself and
- 1:19Speaker 2: and the team by, you know, letting guys run all
- 1:22Speaker 2: over me. And I just I wanted to get better
- 1:26Speaker 2: at it. And uh, you know, it's an honor to
- 1:29Speaker 2: win it. It's really cool that, you know. I didn't
- 1:32Speaker 2: know until I got on that interview a week or
- 1:35Speaker 2: two ago when they said we're the first one since
- 1:38Speaker 2: Wayne Wright and YACHTI. I feel like anytime you're in
- 1:40Speaker 2: a conversation with with those two guys, it's, uh, it's
- 1:43Speaker 2: really special. And uh yeah, I got to go to
- 1:46Speaker 2: the ceremony in New York. They put on an amazing
- 1:50Speaker 2: event at the Plaza. Got to meet a bunch of
- 1:54Speaker 2: cool guys and and people there, and yeah, the award
- 1:57Speaker 2: is is really cool. I don't get to see mine
- 2:00Speaker 2: until next year when they I finally get to go
- 2:03Speaker 2: out there with the other guys and accept it during.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Before one of the games.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But yeah, you know, I I got to when if
- 2:12Speaker 2: you saw the video meets seeing the glove for the
- 2:14Speaker 2: first time.
- 2:15Speaker 3: But it was.
- 2:15Speaker 2: It was really cool and uh happy I can share,
- 2:18Speaker 2: especially with Patty too. You know, he's one of the
- 2:22Speaker 2: best defenders in baseball, if not the best if you
- 2:25Speaker 2: look at metrics and other other stuff.
- 2:28Speaker 3: But being able to say I can do it with
- 2:30Speaker 3: him was was awesome.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Look, you and I, You and you and I talked
- 2:34Speaker 4: a lot about, especially early in the season, about the
- 2:37Speaker 4: work you were doing about holding runners. How did somebody
- 2:42Speaker 4: help you with that? Like, was there were there any
- 2:44Speaker 4: real keys for you for that, because you I'm sure
- 2:48Speaker 4: you know, but like by the mid middle of the season,
- 2:51Speaker 4: you were so far in front of the other pitchers
- 2:53Speaker 4: in terms of all the metrics on holding runners. It
- 2:56Speaker 4: was outrageous and it was it just took like kind
- 2:59Speaker 4: of the off season and in the start of the
- 3:00Speaker 4: season working on it. So that was really incredible.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so it Uh it started honestly the year before,
- 3:08Speaker 2: which is funny because I was like the third worst
- 3:10Speaker 2: defender at the pitcher position. But we were trying to
- 3:16Speaker 2: work on some different things and it just had a
- 3:21Speaker 2: bad spring. I was trying to be quick. I was
- 3:24Speaker 2: trying to and Bomo was like, you know, don't worry
- 3:27Speaker 2: about that. We want you to make your pitches. And
- 3:31Speaker 2: it didn't hurt necessarily that much, but I felt like
- 3:35Speaker 2: I just I think the Cardinal Game, I told you guys,
- 3:39Speaker 2: the Cardinal Game the year before was really tough. Thankfully,
- 3:44Speaker 2: I had a guy over there that I knew, mister
- 3:47Speaker 2: Brandon Uh, that was like, hey, you gotta clean some
- 3:50Speaker 2: of this stuff up, and.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I did you know. I worked on it. I tried
- 3:56Speaker 3: to get better.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I definitely had some I mean, the game nowadays it's
- 4:01Speaker 2: it goes off of tips and and crazy enough. I mean,
- 4:06Speaker 2: I didn't know it. I was always would always wonder
- 4:08Speaker 2: why guys would steal on me so easily. But there's tips,
- 4:13Speaker 2: there's tips that involve that. There's cameras everywhere now so
- 4:17Speaker 2: I was just kind of doing some some stuff that
- 4:20Speaker 2: would keep the same rhythm, the same taps, you know.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I I know, you watch Gosman throw. You got a
- 4:27Speaker 2: bunch of the leg taps, and I kind of probably
- 4:30Speaker 2: watched them and started doing it, and I realized I
- 4:33Speaker 2: was at that point tip in a little bit. Guys
- 4:36Speaker 2: would know when I was going home. So a lot
- 4:40Speaker 2: of people JP Boumel Rhyano, Matt William, Mark Halber. I
- 4:45Speaker 2: mean it was a whole group. Garvin Alston. I, I
- 4:48Speaker 2: really I would try my best. And in bullpens, you know,
- 4:52Speaker 2: when you first show up, you're throwing pens and a
- 4:55Speaker 2: lot of the times you're just trying.
- 4:56Speaker 3: To get a good feel for stuff.
- 4:58Speaker 2: And I would ask them and put the clock out
- 5:00Speaker 2: there and see if I can try to hold a
- 5:03Speaker 2: little bit better and you know, be a little quicker.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And I think once I think I got into a game,
- 5:10Speaker 2: and uh, I know in spring training everyone tries to
- 5:13Speaker 2: steal and h the first couple of games, I was
- 5:18Speaker 2: just trying to be a little quicker. I was trying
- 5:20Speaker 2: to be try some different things with the clock and
- 5:24Speaker 2: you know, change the tempo a little bit. And it
- 5:27Speaker 2: was working. And I don't think I had a stolen
- 5:29Speaker 2: base attempt in spring, which was I was like, maybe
- 5:32Speaker 2: I'm doing something right.
- 5:33Speaker 3: So I just try to keep it going well.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, you're being modest right now. I
- 5:37Speaker 1: mean you you have made the improvements in holding runners,
- 5:40Speaker 1: but you're also an athlete out there, and you know
- 5:42Speaker 1: in the clubhouse and pitchers aren't athletes.
- 5:44Speaker 2: We go back and forth all the time.
- 5:45Speaker 1: But if you're a high school quarterback and all the
- 5:47Speaker 1: plays you made, the one that stands out to me
- 5:48Speaker 1: this year. There were some cool ones, but getting over
- 5:51Speaker 1: on the double play against the Dodgers and the emotion
- 5:53Speaker 1: you showed after touching the base. I mean, you've had
- 5:55Speaker 1: the diving plays where you dive at first base, but like,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I think you're selling yourself a little bit short. It's
- 5:59Speaker 1: not just about holding runners like you're an athlete out
- 6:02Speaker 1: there when you pitched.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I try to be you know, it is the the
- 6:06Speaker 2: joke in the clubhouse that pitchers aren't athletes. And to
- 6:10Speaker 2: be honest, when you look at most pictures run and
- 6:12Speaker 2: then you look at some of these guys run, it's
- 6:14Speaker 2: it's it holds some truth. But yeah, I think, especially
- 6:19Speaker 2: because I get so many grund balls, I feel like
- 6:21Speaker 2: I have to be.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You know able.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I wanted to get better at catching balls too.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I know there's a lot of.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Times when you know, there's a lot of balls hit harder,
- 6:31Speaker 2: especially right back at me, so I gotta be good
- 6:35Speaker 2: at that. And then the getting over part. I wasn't
- 6:37Speaker 2: great at that. I mean, there's just so many parts
- 6:39Speaker 2: that I felt like I needed to be better at
- 6:42Speaker 2: to help the team out, you know, not getting you know,
- 6:45Speaker 2: a ball hits gets hit the first I gotta get
- 6:46Speaker 2: over If I'm late, not only is that hurting you know,
- 6:50Speaker 2: the team, but it's also hurting yourself, but by not
- 6:53Speaker 2: getting the double play to get out of the inning.
- 6:54Speaker 3: So I just wanted to.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I just felt like.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I needed to in all those parts of the game.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I need to get better.
- 7:02Speaker 4: At Yeah, you're keeping a lot more double plays in
- 7:05Speaker 4: line too, with coldon the runners. Yeah, yeah, like and
- 7:08Speaker 4: every way, and you're getting over to first better to
- 7:10Speaker 4: complete the back end of some of those.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Double place Yeah, and I together perfect. Well, that's what
- 7:16Speaker 2: kind of JP said at the end of last year.
- 7:17Speaker 2: He's like, Hey, if we just get better at this,
- 7:19Speaker 2: you might have I don't know, eight eight to ten
- 7:22Speaker 2: less runs at the end of the season. And you
- 7:25Speaker 2: know that's a you know, that's a big part of
- 7:27Speaker 2: your like not only for the team, but like your
- 7:30Speaker 2: e RA and some other stuff, and like, why don't
- 7:32Speaker 2: we just try to clean up a little bit? And
- 7:34Speaker 2: I think at the end of the year, JP kind
- 7:37Speaker 2: of showed me a stat. And I don't know how
- 7:40Speaker 2: all the analysts do all this stuff, but they can
- 7:43Speaker 2: figure out, like if you didn't let them steal the base.
- 7:45Speaker 2: You've saved this many runs and I you know, saved
- 7:48Speaker 2: a decent amount of runs. So that's what the name
- 7:53Speaker 2: the name of the game is. Just trying to keep
- 7:55Speaker 2: the team in the game as long as possible. And
- 7:58Speaker 2: if I'm you know, being a dumbass out there and
- 8:03Speaker 2: giving up a stolen base, because I'm you know, I
- 8:06Speaker 2: feel bad about it. So, like I said, trying to
- 8:08Speaker 2: get better for for all those guys.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And you got Patty.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Behind the plate, so give him a chance to throw
- 8:13Speaker 2: the guy out.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you talk about that.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I mean you could have won a Silver Slugger Award too,
- 8:19Speaker 1: if that was still an award for pitchers, you might
- 8:22Speaker 1: have won that too. But we got to get to
- 8:23Speaker 1: the off season news. Tony Vitello, he's he's your new manager.
- 8:27Speaker 1: What are your impressions. When was the first time you met?
- 8:29Speaker 1: What can you share with us about your new skipper
- 8:32Speaker 1: and how you feel about that whole thing.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I knew about it a little bit. I knew
- 8:39Speaker 2: we were talking to him, and then I think I
- 8:40Speaker 2: knew a couple of days early, and then.
- 8:44Speaker 3: I reached out to him.
- 8:45Speaker 2: We texted a little back and forth, and I was
- 8:46Speaker 2: in Nashville actually this last week for a wedding and
- 8:51Speaker 2: I got to meet him in person, which was awesome.
- 8:55Speaker 2: He's gonna bring a lot of enthusiasm, you know. He's uh,
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, a Brillian and I think baseball guy, and
- 9:01Speaker 2: he just wants I think the big thing for for
- 9:05Speaker 2: him and I think something that is going to be
- 9:07Speaker 2: great for us. He just wants everyone on the same page,
- 9:09Speaker 2: like this is this is what we're.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Trying to do. The main goal is to win at all.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Costs, and uh, I think it's gonna be great. I
- 9:19Speaker 2: texted all the guys after where I was like, I
- 9:20Speaker 2: don't know if anyone's met him, but I did get
- 9:23Speaker 2: get to meet him, and I you know, I texted Chatie, Willie,
- 9:26Speaker 2: I text all us saying, this guy's this guy is
- 9:28Speaker 2: gonna be awesome and I can't I can't wait to
- 9:32Speaker 2: work with him.
- 9:33Speaker 4: When when you first when you first heard about it, Logan,
- 9:35Speaker 4: was there any like like, I don't know thought in
- 9:38Speaker 4: your mind like, well, you know, he hasn't had any
- 9:41Speaker 4: pro experience of any kind, playing, coaching, managing. Uh, maybe
- 9:45Speaker 4: there might be some veterans that might not totally be
- 9:47Speaker 4: on board with That was that a concern, and do
- 9:49Speaker 4: you do you feel like the personality and the experience
- 9:52Speaker 4: and the success he's had at the level he as
- 9:54Speaker 4: just like wipes any of that out.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I really don't. I don't know how much much all
- 10:00Speaker 2: that really matters, I think. I mean, there's people that
- 10:05Speaker 2: are in the game for twenty years and they get
- 10:09Speaker 2: a manager job and they don't do a good job.
- 10:11Speaker 3: So it's it's all I think at the end of
- 10:14Speaker 3: the day, like what.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Tony wants, which is like the unity, the team part everything,
- 10:20Speaker 2: everyone on the same page.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I think that's I mean, that's the main thing.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I think when you get you know, we're with each
- 10:29Speaker 2: other for a long time, and there's times when you're
- 10:33Speaker 2: sick of each other.
- 10:34Speaker 3: You know, it's like I things aren't going well.
- 10:37Speaker 2: There are a lot of lots of times this year
- 10:39Speaker 2: where you know there's long stretches, right, we lose fourteen
- 10:42Speaker 2: to fifteen at home, whatever the number was. I think
- 10:46Speaker 2: at the end of the day, you find a guy
- 10:47Speaker 2: like like Tony who is going to try to keep
- 10:51Speaker 2: the room together and try to keep the everyone motivated.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I I think the the big thing is like shortening
- 10:59Speaker 2: though you're gonna have moments where you might I don't
- 11:03Speaker 2: know what the number is, but I know the Dodgers
- 11:04Speaker 2: at multiple times this year had times when.
- 11:06Speaker 3: They things weren't going well. It happens. Like I said,
- 11:11Speaker 3: it's a long season.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But I think the teams that can keep those periods
- 11:16Speaker 2: shorter than others.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Are the teams that have success.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And I think that's kind of the big thing that
- 11:24Speaker 2: a guy with energy like that will will try to bring.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Does Buster and Zach keep you in the loop on
- 11:31Speaker 1: who the candidates are? Do they bounce it off maybe
- 11:33Speaker 1: the core veteran players to see what they think and
- 11:35Speaker 1: get your feelings on stuff.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I mean a little bit. Yeah, you know, I talked
- 11:40Speaker 2: to Buster at the end of the year. I talked
- 11:42Speaker 2: to Zach at the end of the year. I didn't
- 11:46Speaker 2: know any of that was gonna happen. They didn't tell
- 11:47Speaker 2: me that, you know, Bomo would wouldn't be back. But
- 11:52Speaker 2: you know, we talked about players. I think I think
- 11:56Speaker 2: Buster and them do a good job keeping it like
- 11:59Speaker 2: two positions like I can't tell you what a second
- 12:01Speaker 2: baseman or you know, any position like I can.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I can't tell you who's good and who's not.
- 12:07Speaker 2: You know, I I don't really know, but I feel
- 12:11Speaker 2: like they do a good job of asking about, Hey,
- 12:14Speaker 2: how do you feel about this picture? Not as much
- 12:18Speaker 2: as the old regime, I would say I definitely heard
- 12:20Speaker 2: a lot more from those guys about things.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I think Buster kind of likes to keep it to himself,
- 12:26Speaker 3: which which is great.
- 12:28Speaker 2: At the end of the day, it's not my job
- 12:30Speaker 2: to get the guys or.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I think. I just got to focus on myself.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Try to get better in the offseason, and you know,
- 12:38Speaker 2: try to win as many games as I can next year.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Obviously there's some staff changes and JP and Garvin JPI
- 12:47Speaker 4: leaving and Garvin's not coming back. How do you feel
- 12:50Speaker 4: about those? Those are obviously the guys you worked most
- 12:52Speaker 4: closely with, and you know that you'll be looking at
- 12:56Speaker 4: a new pitching coach, assisting pitching coach or bullpenco whatever
- 13:00Speaker 4: they call that position.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been with j JP since twenty twenty one,
- 13:08Speaker 2: so that's definitely gonna be kind of a change for me.
- 13:13Speaker 2: You know, I've I've very close with JP. He's helped
- 13:15Speaker 2: me a lot in a lot of different ways. I
- 13:19Speaker 2: thought he did a great job last year. I thought
- 13:20Speaker 2: Garvin did a great job last year. I've known Garvin
- 13:23Speaker 2: for before he was with the Giants, so yeah, it's
- 13:27Speaker 2: gonna be it'll be different. I'm excited for both of
- 13:30Speaker 2: them wherever. I know JP's going to Atlanta. Uh, he
- 13:34Speaker 2: gets to be back with Shortzy, which I'm excited for
- 13:36Speaker 2: for him. And I know Antoine's over there too, so
- 13:39Speaker 2: it'll be that'll be a good staff. And uh, I
- 13:43Speaker 2: don't know where she's going yet, but I know whatever
- 13:45Speaker 2: team that does get him is getting a great guy
- 13:48Speaker 2: and a great pitching coach.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So but yeah, excited to.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm not, like I said, I'm not
- 13:54Speaker 2: in the loop that much for all this stuff, so
- 13:56Speaker 2: I don't know, but I'm sure. I'm sure Buster is
- 14:00Speaker 2: gonna pick a great guy. I know Tony will pick
- 14:03Speaker 2: a great guy. So excited to work with whoever. I think.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I think too.
- 14:07Speaker 3: It gets to the point where.
- 14:09Speaker 2: You know, as a as a veteran guy, I don't
- 14:12Speaker 2: need I'm not saying I don't need. I do need,
- 14:14Speaker 2: but not as much as I did when I was younger.
- 14:18Speaker 2: So really it's just getting on the same page with
- 14:20Speaker 2: whoever they bring in.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And that's what I was gonna ask you, Well, you
- 14:23Speaker 1: can textbuster that you want Max Schurzer to be a giant.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Nobody was gonna ask you that, like maybe a little
- 14:29Speaker 1: bit deeper into like it's your eighth year in the
- 14:32Speaker 1: big leagues, you're a salty veteran now, Like there's certain
- 14:35Speaker 1: hitting coaches that spoke my love language, some that didn't,
- 14:39Speaker 1: and when they don't, it's frustrating and you're just not
- 14:42Speaker 1: speaking the same language. So at this point in your career,
- 14:46Speaker 1: like you just said, kind of it's not that important,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but you talked about JP and the holding the runners,
- 14:50Speaker 1: and and it is.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I'm okay, I'm gonna rephrase that.
- 14:53Speaker 2: It is very important, Okay, I I.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, So how important is it to you at this
- 14:58Speaker 1: point in your career?
- 14:59Speaker 2: This long winded question? I guess. I guess what I
- 15:03Speaker 2: was kind of saying was more like the scouting part
- 15:06Speaker 2: of it, like before a game. I think also too,
- 15:11Speaker 2: with like catch play and bullpens, Like it's more I
- 15:18Speaker 2: would say with the older guys, it's more like, hey,
- 15:20Speaker 2: do you see anything, Like I'm throwing a bullpen.
- 15:22Speaker 3: I know what I'm seeing, I know what I'm feeling.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I'm to the point now where I feel like I
- 15:28Speaker 2: can change on my own, like, I know that that's
- 15:30Speaker 2: not right.
- 15:33Speaker 3: But it's nice to have.
- 15:34Speaker 2: And that's what was great about JP is I've had
- 15:36Speaker 2: him for so long where I could be like, hey,
- 15:38Speaker 2: what am I doing?
- 15:39Speaker 3: And he could be like, remember when we did this
- 15:41Speaker 3: in twenty twenty two and.
- 15:42Speaker 2: It got you right back? So I guess, I guess
- 15:46Speaker 2: it is very very important. And I was kind of
- 15:49Speaker 2: more thinking the scouting part of things and stuff like that. Oh,
- 15:53Speaker 2: it makes sense.
- 15:54Speaker 4: You mentioned, you know, busters sometimes in the previous administration
- 16:00Speaker 4: bouncing some stuff off of you about you know, potential
- 16:03Speaker 4: free agents and additions and stuff like that. We're kind
- 16:05Speaker 4: of up to that time again. I talked to Greg
- 16:07Speaker 4: Johnson last week and he mentioned he thinks that you
- 16:11Speaker 4: guys need at least one more Veterans Starter, depending on
- 16:13Speaker 4: what happens with Justin Verlander and whether it comes back
- 16:16Speaker 4: or not. Maybe too so obviously Schuser's names out there
- 16:20Speaker 4: for obvious reasons. Justin's out there. How do you kind
- 16:24Speaker 4: of see things? Do you do you feel like you
- 16:25Speaker 4: need another Veterans Starter or two? And do you have
- 16:29Speaker 4: any insights?
- 16:32Speaker 2: I no, I I think this was a a lot
- 16:38Speaker 2: of weird things happen this year. You know, Justin gets
- 16:40Speaker 2: hurt kind of in a tough part of the year,
- 16:43Speaker 2: and then you know Rupe getting hurt really hurt us
- 16:47Speaker 2: in San Diego, and then you know there's some other
- 16:51Speaker 2: things that happened.
- 16:53Speaker 3: You know, I still think.
- 16:54Speaker 2: The organization and all of us think the world of
- 16:57Speaker 2: Hayden bird Song, you know, I think, uh, like I said,
- 17:01Speaker 2: just some weird stuff happened.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Uh, I think there's still a bright future for for
- 17:06Speaker 3: Hayden and and we're excited about that.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And there's some other guys you can be really excited about.
- 17:11Speaker 2: You know, I think Wiz'd Hunt's a really good picture.
- 17:14Speaker 2: There's a ton of young guys down there. I think
- 17:15Speaker 2: Trevor McDonald at the end of the year was uh,
- 17:19Speaker 2: you know.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Really impressive.
- 17:21Speaker 2: You know, we got to see him last the year before,
- 17:23Speaker 2: like the last game, he was like a spot, Hey,
- 17:26Speaker 2: let's throw three innings and he did amazing.
- 17:29Speaker 3: And then this year he came in and I thought
- 17:31Speaker 3: he did a great job again.
- 17:32Speaker 2: So there's a lot of really good pieces that we have. Obviously,
- 17:38Speaker 2: you know, me and Robbie and you know, I would
- 17:42Speaker 2: love to have Justin back. I thought Justin back to
- 17:44Speaker 2: the kind of the scouting part of things helped me
- 17:47Speaker 2: so much, uh in my career, not only just mentality,
- 17:53Speaker 2: you know, the scouting part of it, seeing reading different
- 17:58Speaker 2: things that I might you know not I've seen before.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And I would love justin to come back. Like I said,
- 18:05Speaker 2: it's not my decision. I don't get to decide these things.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I saw the Max thing. I know Tony knows them
- 18:12Speaker 2: from a long time ago, so and I'm sure I'm
- 18:14Speaker 2: sure it would be very similar.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Learning as much as I can, and then.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I I think at the end, I
- 18:22Speaker 2: always try to find guys and get better in certain ways.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of comments about trying to get
- 18:28Speaker 2: starting pitching and and and other other spots. So like
- 18:34Speaker 2: I said, just show up and try to try to
- 18:36Speaker 2: do try to get better as for myself and then
- 18:39Speaker 2: kind of let the other pieces fall as they may.
- 18:42Speaker 1: You're getting better right now. You just came from your workout.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Maybe take us quickly through like what your off season workouts,
- 18:49Speaker 1: like how hard you work and how that's evolved over
- 18:51Speaker 1: the years, because I know for myself like that was
- 18:53Speaker 1: always an evolutionary process, Like different off seasons were different things.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And are you working on anything different, like different pitches
- 19:00Speaker 1: or anything. I saw the back and forth with Brent
- 19:03Speaker 1: Rooker about the split knuckle ball and splits like the
- 19:06Speaker 1: thing with Yamamoto now in the world.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Yeah, take us through like your off season.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Workout what you're going through right now.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Well, first off, I'm just trying to get Brent to
- 19:15Speaker 2: to think of something else, right, Like, if I tell
- 19:17Speaker 2: him I'm throwing a splitter knuckleball, he'll try he'll actually
- 19:19Speaker 2: believe me for a second. He's no chance he actually
- 19:22Speaker 2: believes me. But but yeah, I think, yeah, they're always
- 19:26Speaker 2: trying to find new ways to get a pitch better.
- 19:30Speaker 2: You know, last offseason it was trying to get my
- 19:32Speaker 2: change up back to the where it was the year before.
- 19:37Speaker 2: It was adding the cutter, trying to there's always tink
- 19:42Speaker 2: tinkering to try to get maybe an inch more on
- 19:45Speaker 2: my sweeper or you know, maybe add an extra tick
- 19:49Speaker 2: of velocity, which I try to do every year and
- 19:51Speaker 2: it never happens. But but yeah, there's always new things.
- 19:56Speaker 3: I think as you get older, you learn your body
- 19:58Speaker 3: a little bit better.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Definitely, I don't try to lift as much, like as
- 20:04Speaker 2: heavy as I used to. I'm not trying to deadlift
- 20:06Speaker 2: the world or squat the world or bench as much
- 20:09Speaker 2: as I can. I think that's, uh, that was a younger,
- 20:12Speaker 2: younger me thing. Now it's kind of hurts a little
- 20:15Speaker 2: bit more so it's just trying to I think it's
- 20:19Speaker 2: more maintaining now I have done it. I've been at
- 20:22Speaker 2: the same gym for six years now push Performance here
- 20:24Speaker 2: in Arizona, and I've loved the workouts.
- 20:27Speaker 3: I do it during the season as well, and.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Just trying to trying to get better in different areas,
- 20:34Speaker 2: Like you know, I'm trying to make my hips a
- 20:37Speaker 2: little more better for you know, whatever that is. You know,
- 20:40Speaker 2: there's always uh parts of the off season where you're
- 20:44Speaker 2: trying to get a little more athletic or you're trying
- 20:45Speaker 2: to do different things.
- 20:46Speaker 3: So I'm excited about it. Uh, definitely.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I thought at the end of the year, I saw
- 20:52Speaker 2: I there's some mechanical things that I was really excited
- 20:55Speaker 2: about that I felt, you know, talking to people, and
- 20:59Speaker 2: I'm trying to keep going with that, try to get
- 21:01Speaker 2: better at that.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Well, you're a strikeout guy now four strikeouts. You led
- 21:05Speaker 1: the National League in strikeouts? Is that your new thing?
- 21:07Speaker 1: Are you just blowing guys away next year.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Who knows, Maybe it's a fluke here. I won the
- 21:11Speaker 2: gold Glove. I was the worst defender and I won
- 21:13Speaker 2: the gold Glove. And I'm not a strikeout guy, and
- 21:15Speaker 2: I struck out all, you know, more guys than I
- 21:18Speaker 2: ever have. But no, that's that's kind of the evolvment thing. That's,
- 21:23Speaker 2: you know, trying to get better in certain ways. Definitely,
- 21:27Speaker 2: I think Justin was a big part of the strikeouts
- 21:30Speaker 2: going up, you know, finding new ways to to get
- 21:33Speaker 2: strikes early and counts, throwing different pitches.
- 21:36Speaker 3: You know.
- 21:37Speaker 2: I felt like before I'd get in trouble with it
- 21:39Speaker 2: too where I would just kind of heavily lean on
- 21:42Speaker 2: my change up and if it's the eighth or ninth
- 21:46Speaker 2: time the guy's seen it in a game, it's probably
- 21:48Speaker 2: not going to be as effective. And learning I can
- 21:51Speaker 2: throw other pitches and different counts, and I thought that
- 21:55Speaker 2: was really cool. And yes, try to get to try
- 22:00Speaker 2: to get a little better, I think definitely, you know,
- 22:04Speaker 2: I do think the extra velo is a thing. I'm
- 22:07Speaker 2: not chasing one hundred, but I think if I can
- 22:11Speaker 2: maintain it a little longer in games, I know, I
- 22:14Speaker 2: you know, I can get to ninety four, ninety five
- 22:16Speaker 2: early in a game, and then by the end of
- 22:18Speaker 2: the game it's ninety two. So if I can maintain
- 22:21Speaker 2: a little better, and that's part of the mechanical things
- 22:23Speaker 2: that I'm excited about.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Susan, you asked one more, and I'll ask one more
- 22:26Speaker 1: and we'll let them go.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Well, I've got the really important one. Since it's YAF season,
- 22:29Speaker 4: I'm wondering how you're doing in the fantasy football I have.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I so in the Giants one, I think I'm in
- 22:37Speaker 2: a playoff spot right now. I think I'm six and four,
- 22:41Speaker 2: so not bad. I'm honestly five hundred in like every league,
- 22:45Speaker 2: which I don't know if I'm excited about that that
- 22:47Speaker 2: I'm not bad in any league, but.
- 22:51Speaker 3: It's been a weird I feel like it's been a
- 22:52Speaker 3: weird football year. You know. I have one league where
- 22:55Speaker 3: I have like.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Six of the best players and they're just not working
- 22:59Speaker 2: out for me, and I'm not in the playoffs in
- 23:01Speaker 2: that league. But in another league, I don't have as
- 23:04Speaker 2: good as players and I'm in the playoffs. So it's
- 23:06Speaker 2: just it's all weird.
- 23:08Speaker 4: I would say I'm rooting for you in the Giants one,
- 23:10Speaker 4: except for I think we would all love to see
- 23:12Speaker 4: you be the bat boy for a day. So I
- 23:15Speaker 4: don't know's that's one.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Well Chappie.
- 23:18Speaker 2: So Chappie won the league last year and his team
- 23:21Speaker 2: is not very good this year. So I'm hoping we
- 23:24Speaker 2: get to see Matt Chapman, uh bat boy sighting this year.
- 23:29Speaker 1: He'd actually have to take it. Yeah, last one, Logan,
- 23:35Speaker 1: we let you go. Thank you so much for coming on.
- 23:37Speaker 1: This is huge for our podcast. You're first guest ever.
- 23:40Speaker 1: It's been great. I know you just want to gold glove.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I know Asai Young means a lot to you too.
- 23:46Speaker 1: But what would a World Championship in the San Francisco
- 23:49Speaker 1: Giants uniform in the Logan web?
- 23:52Speaker 2: Oh, it'd be the best, you know, I I've I
- 23:57Speaker 2: came up in an error with uh. You know, there's
- 23:59Speaker 2: a lot of guys still there from the championship years.
- 24:02Speaker 2: It was bomb I mean, I'm gonna keep naming Bombbuster,
- 24:06Speaker 2: crab Bell all these guys, right. And I got to
- 24:10Speaker 2: see firsthand how much it meant to these guys and
- 24:13Speaker 2: how much the Giants mean.
- 24:14Speaker 3: To them, and it was really cool.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And then I had my first really full season was
- 24:19Speaker 2: twenty one and we won one hundred and seven games,
- 24:22Speaker 2: and I thought there was no chance that any team
- 24:25Speaker 2: was going to beat us. We I just felt that way,
- 24:28Speaker 2: and we came close, not really that close, but you know,
- 24:33Speaker 2: one run away from going to the CS and and I, uh,
- 24:38Speaker 2: you know, I just thought that was gonna how it was,
- 24:40Speaker 2: how it was going to be the rest of my
- 24:41Speaker 2: career here, Right's uh, it's the Giants were just going
- 24:44Speaker 2: to keep winning and unfortunately hasn't worked out. It's starting
- 24:49Speaker 2: to get, you know, more and more frustrating at the
- 24:51Speaker 2: end of seasons. But it's it's it's just something that
- 24:55Speaker 2: I want to do. I mean, I think everybody wants
- 24:58Speaker 2: if you're playing the big leagues, you want to win
- 24:59Speaker 2: a World Series, but it's especially it would be especially
- 25:02Speaker 2: great to win it in a Giants uniform. I'm I'm
- 25:06Speaker 2: hoping I'm here my whole career, but that's not always.
- 25:09Speaker 2: It doesn't always work out that way. So you know,
- 25:12Speaker 2: I got three more years left on my contract, and
- 25:15Speaker 2: I just hope, you know, hopefully it's this year, right
- 25:17Speaker 2: and hopefully we you know, uh, Buster goes out and
- 25:21Speaker 2: signs all the best players and we trade for all
- 25:23Speaker 2: the best players. But but no, I I think, uh,
- 25:27Speaker 2: I think we're on the right track. I think we've
- 25:29Speaker 2: got a good corps guy core group of guys. I
- 25:31Speaker 2: think bringing a guy like Tony is gonna be a
- 25:33Speaker 2: huge part of it. And uh, I'm super excited for
- 25:37Speaker 2: this year. But I feel like I'm going away from
- 25:40Speaker 2: your question. Yes, that is the that is something that
- 25:43Speaker 2: I I, you know, hopefully look forward.
- 25:46Speaker 3: To doing in a Giants uniform, you know.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we got all the guys, the boat she got,
- 25:55Speaker 2: you know, bringing saves back. You're just all the all
- 25:58Speaker 2: the it's it's exciting.
- 26:00Speaker 3: It's exciting.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Webby.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Thanks so much, man, I know you're working out. You
- 26:03Speaker 1: take time for us. It means a lot to us,
- 26:05Speaker 1: bro and I look forward to seeing you soon.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah, key, and we really appreciate that. Yeah, thank you
- 26:10Speaker 3: guys for having Mebby.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Bye guys, Bye,
