- 0:20Hello listeners and welcome back to Sandman stories presents.
- 0:25Today, we are traveling back to the akan culture in present-day
- 0:28Ghana. In the first story, we learn
- 0:32about a grindstone that does the work all by itself.
- 0:34And why little spiders are always found underneath it, In
- 0:38the Second Story, we learn about why sea turtles, always beat
- 0:42their breasts. And in the third story, we learn
- 0:45about how all the creepy crawly and slithery animals came into
- 0:49the world. Okay, let's begin.
- 0:56Story number one, the grinding stone that ground, flour by
- 1:00itself. There had been another Great
- 1:03Famine through the land. The villagers look thin and pale
- 1:07for lack of food. Only one family appeared healthy
- 1:10and well, this was the household of a Nazis cousin.
- 1:15Nancy was unable to understand this until it.
- 1:17Sure. His cousin was getting food in
- 1:19some way. The greedy fellow determined to
- 1:22find out the secret. What had happened?
- 1:24Was this spiders cousin while hunting one morning had
- 1:27discovered a wonderful Stone thus told, no lie on the grass
- 1:31in the forest and ground flour of its own accord.
- 1:35Nearby ran a stream of Honey, cofey was delighted.
- 1:39He sat down and had a good meal, not being a greedy, man.
- 1:43He took away with him. Only enough for his family's
- 1:46needs. Each morning, he returned to the
- 1:49stone and got sufficient food for that day.
- 1:52In this manner, he and his family kept well, and plump.
- 1:55While the surrounding villagers were starved and miserable
- 1:57looking. And Nancy gave him no peace till
- 2:01he promised his show him the stone this.
- 2:04He was most unwilling to do knowing his cousin, the Wicked
- 2:07Ways. He felt sure that when a Nancy
- 2:10saw the stone it would not be content to only take what he
- 2:13needed. However, Anansi trouble him so
- 2:17much with questions that at last he promised he told Anansi that
- 2:21they would start the next morning as soon as the women
- 2:24were said about their work and Nancy was too impatient to wait.
- 2:29In the middle of the night, he bade his children to get up and
- 2:31make noise with pots and pans as if there were the women at work
- 2:35spider at once ran in wakened his cousin saying quick, it is
- 2:39time to start his cousin. However, saw he had been tricked
- 2:43went back to bed again saying he would not start to the women
- 2:46were sweeping. No sooner was he asleep again.
- 2:50Then spider made his children. Take brooms and began to sweep
- 2:52very noisily Heroes. Kofi once more saying it is
- 2:56time, we had started once more his cousin refused to set off
- 3:00saying, it was only another trick of spiders.
- 3:03He again returned to bed and to sleep this time, spider slipped
- 3:08into his cousin's room, and cut a hole in the bottom of his bag,
- 3:11which he then filled with ashes after that, he went off and left
- 3:15Kofi and peace. When morning came, the cousin,
- 3:19awoke seeing no sign of spider. You very gladly, set off alone
- 3:23to the forest, thinking he had gotten rid of the tiresome
- 3:26fellow. He was no sooner seated by the
- 3:29stone. However, then announced he
- 3:30appeared having followed him by a trail of Ashes.
- 3:34Aha, he cried here is plenty of food for all no more need to
- 3:39starve. Hush said his cousin.
- 3:42You must not shout here. This place is too wonderful.
- 3:46Sit down quietly, and eat. They had a good meal and Kofi
- 3:50prepared to return home with enough for his family.
- 3:54No, no credit. Uncie I am going to take the
- 3:57stone in vain. Did his friend tried to overcome
- 4:00his greed, Anansi insisted on putting the stone on his head
- 4:04and setting out for the village. Spider spider, put me down, said
- 4:11the stone, the pig, came and drank and went away.
- 4:14The antelope came and fed and went away.
- 4:17Spider spider, put me down spider, however, refused to
- 4:22listen, he carried the Stone from Village to Village selling
- 4:25flour until his bag was full of money, then he set out for home,
- 4:31having reached his heart and feeling very tired, he prepared
- 4:33to put the stone down, but the stern refused to be moved from
- 4:37his head. Ed.
- 4:38It's stuck fast there and no efforts could displace it, the
- 4:42weight of it very soon. Grew too much for Anansi and
- 4:45ground him down into small pieces, which were completely
- 4:48covered by the stone. That is why we often find, tiny
- 4:52spiders gathered together, under large Stones.
- 4:56The end, Okay, and Story number two.
- 5:16Why the sea turtle when caught beats its breast with its four
- 5:20legs many centuries ago? The people of this Earth were
- 5:23much troubled by floods. The sea used at times to
- 5:27overflow. Its usual boundaries and sweep
- 5:30across the low Sandy stretches of land which bordered it time.
- 5:34And again, this happened, many lives being lost at each flood.
- 5:38Mankind, was very troubled to find an escape from this off
- 5:41repeated disaster. He could think of no way of
- 5:45avoiding it. Fortunately, for him, the wise
- 5:48Turtle came to his help. Take my advice said she and
- 5:53plant rows Palms. Along the Seacoast, they will
- 5:55bind the sand together and keep it from being washed so easily
- 5:59away. He did.
- 6:01So with great success, the roots of the Palms, kept the sand
- 6:05firmly in its place when the time came again for the city to
- 6:09overflow, it just washed to the line of the trees and came no
- 6:12further. Thus many lives were saved
- 6:15annually by the kind for thought of the turtle in return.
- 6:19One would think Can we protect and cherish this poor animal?
- 6:24But no each time, a turtle comes to the seashore, to lay her eggs
- 6:28among the sand. She has caught and killed for
- 6:30the sake of her flesh. It is the thought of this
- 6:33ingratitude of mankind to her, which makes her beat her breast
- 6:37with her forelegs when she has caught. she seems to be saying,
- 6:42ah, this is all the return I get for my kindness to you, the end,
- 7:04okay, and Story number three, how beasts and serpents first
- 7:09came into the world Old. The famine had lasted nearly
- 7:14three years, quick, oats in being very hungry, look daily.
- 7:18In the forest, in the hope of finding food.
- 7:21One day, he was fortunate enough to discover three Palm kernels
- 7:24lying in the ground. He picked up two stones with
- 7:28which to crack them. The first not however slipped
- 7:31when he hit it and fell into a hole behind him, the same thing
- 7:35happened to the second and to the third very much annoyed at
- 7:39his loss kweku determined to go down the hole.
- 7:42To see if he could find his lost nuts to his surprise.
- 7:45However, he discovered that this whole was really an entrance to
- 7:49a town of which he had never before.
- 7:51Even heard, When he reached it, he found absolute silence
- 7:56everywhere. He called out, is there.
- 7:59Nobody in this town and presently Heard a Voice.
- 8:04In answer, he went in its direction and found an old woman
- 8:07sitting in one of the houses. She demanded the reason of his
- 8:11appearance, which he readily gave the old.
- 8:14Woman was very kind and sympathetic and promised to help
- 8:17him. You must do.
- 8:19Exactly. As I tell you, she said, go into
- 8:23the garden and listened attentively.
- 8:26You will hear the yams speak. Pass by any am that says, Dig Me
- 8:30Out, dig me out, but take the one that says, do not dig me out
- 8:35then bring it to me. When he brought it, she directed
- 8:38him to remove the peel from the yam and throw the ladder away.
- 8:43He was then to boil the Rind. And while boiling, it would
- 8:46become a yam. It did actually do so and they
- 8:49sat down to eat some of it before.
- 8:52Beginning the meal, the old woman requested kweku not look
- 8:55at her while she ate. Being very polite and obedient
- 8:58he did exactly as he was told. In the evening, the old woman,
- 9:03sent him to the Garden to choose one of the drums, which stood
- 9:06there, she warned him. If you come to a drum, which
- 9:10says ding ding on being touched, take it, but be very careful not
- 9:14to take the one, which sounds gong gong.
- 9:18He obeyed her Direction in every detail.
- 9:20When he showed her the drum, she looked pleased and told him to
- 9:23his great Delight that he had only to beat it.
- 9:26If at any time he were hungry, that would bring him food in
- 9:29plenty. He thanked the old woman, very
- 9:32heartily and went home. As soon as he reached his own
- 9:36Hut, he gathered his household together and then beat the drum
- 9:41immediately food of every description appeared before
- 9:43them, and they all ate as much as they wished the following
- 9:48day, quick oats in gathered, all the people of the village
- 9:51together in the assembly place, and then beat the drum.
- 9:54Once more in this way, every family got sufficient food for
- 9:58their wants and all think kweku very much much for thus
- 10:02providing through them. Quick was father.
- 10:05However was not at all pleased to see his son thus able to feed
- 10:08the whole village. Nancy thought he to ought to
- 10:12have a drum then the people would be grateful to him instead
- 10:15of the quick links in accordingly.
- 10:18He has the young man with a wonderful drum had come from.
- 10:22His son was most unwilling to tell him but a Nazi gave him, no
- 10:26peace until he had heard the whole story.
- 10:29He then wasted no time, but set off at once, toward the entrance
- 10:32hole, he had taken the precaution to carry with him and
- 10:36old not which he pretended to crack then, throwing it into the
- 10:40hole he jumped in after it and hurried along to the silent
- 10:43Village. Arrived at the first house, he
- 10:47shouted. Is there?
- 10:48No one in this town. The old woman answered as before
- 10:53and Anansi entered, her house. He did not trouble to be polite
- 10:57to her but addressed her most rudely sang, hurry up old woman,
- 11:01get me something to eat the woman quietly, directed him to
- 11:05go into the garden and choose the yam which should say, Do not
- 11:09dig me out. Nancy left in her face and said,
- 11:14you surely take me for a fool if the M does not want me to dig it
- 11:18out. I will certainly not do.
- 11:19So, I will take the one which ones to be gathered this, he
- 11:23did, when he brought it to the old woman, she told him as she
- 11:27told his son to throw away the inside and boil the Rind.
- 11:31Again, he refused to obey who ever heard such a silly thing as
- 11:37throwing away. The yam.
- 11:39I will do nothing of the sort. I will.
- 11:41Throw away the peel and boil the inside.
- 11:44He did so and the yam turned into Stones, he was then obliged
- 11:48to do as she first suggested and boil.
- 11:51The Rind, the latter, while boiling turned into a yam,
- 11:56Anansi turned angrily toward the old woman and said, you are a
- 12:00witch. She took no notice of his
- 12:03remark, but went on, setting the table.
- 12:06When she placed his dinner on a small table lower than her own
- 12:09saying, You must not. Look at me while I eat he rudely
- 12:13replied. Indeed, I will look at you if I
- 12:15choose and I will have my dinner at your table, not at that.
- 12:19Small one again, she said nothing but she left her dinner
- 12:23on touched enunciate, his own, then to hers, and aided also,
- 12:29When he had finished, he said now go into the garden and
- 12:32choose a drum. Do not take the one which sounds
- 12:35Dong Dong, only take the one, which says ding ding.
- 12:40And Nancy. Retorted, do you think I will
- 12:42take your advice, you, which know I will choose the drum,
- 12:46which says Dong Dong. You are just trying to play a
- 12:48trick on me. He did his, he wish.
- 12:52Having secured the drum, he marched off without so much as a
- 12:55thank you to the old woman. No sooner had he reached home
- 12:59that he longed to show off his new power, to the villagers, he
- 13:03called all to the assembly Place, telling them to bring
- 13:06dishes and Trays as he was going to provide them with food.
- 13:09The people in great Delight hurried to the spot.
- 13:13Anansi probably taking his position.
- 13:16In the midst of them began to beat his drum.
- 13:20To his horror and dismay instead of the multitude of foodstuffs,
- 13:23which quick who had summoned a Nazi saw rushing toward him
- 13:27beasts and serpents of all kinds.
- 13:30Such creatures had never been seen on the earth before the
- 13:34people fled in every direction, all except a Nancy who was too
- 13:37terrified to move. He speedily received fitting
- 13:41punishment for his Disobedience. Fortunately kweku with his
- 13:45mother and sisters had been at the outer edge of the crowd so
- 13:49easily. Into shelter, the animals
- 13:51presently scattered in every direction and ever since they
- 13:55have roamed wild in the great forests.
- 13:59The end. All right, I like in the first
- 14:13story that the stone was trying to warn a Nazi and not trying to
- 14:16harm him. But as always, a Nazis, greed is
- 14:20a downfall. In the Second Story, I really
- 14:23felt bad for the sea turtles. They did so much good for us and
- 14:27how do we repay them by killing them stealing their eggs?
- 14:31I'd be pretty sad too. And in the last story, I love
- 14:35the classic. Do the opposite of what you
- 14:37normally do, and you will be rewarded.
- 14:40That element comes up in a lot of stories, and I think it makes
- 14:42them just that much more memorable, boil the skin of the
- 14:46potato and such. And again, Anansi just can't be
- 14:50satisfied. At must always be sassy.
- 14:52And for that, he brings all the creepy crawly and dangerous
- 14:55animals into the world. Reminds me of Pandora and her
- 14:58box. All right, and today's podcast
- 15:02shout-out is to yield crime Lindsay and Madison go through
